The FY3 (Feng-Yun-3) GNOS (GNSS Occultation Sounder) mission is a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) radio occultation mission of China for remote sensing of Earth's neutral atmosphere and the ionosphere. GNOS will use both the global positioning system (GPS) and the Beidou navigation satellite systems on the China Feng-Yun-3 (FY3) series satellites. The first FY3-C was launched at 03:07 UTC on 23 September 2013. GNOS was developed by the Center for Space Science and Applied Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CSSAR). It will provide vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature, pressure, and humidity, as well as ionospheric electron density profiles on a global basis. These data will be used for numerical weather prediction, climate research, and ionospheric research and space weather. This paper describes the FY3 GNOS mission and the GNOS instrument characteristics. It presents simulation results of the number and distribution of GNOS occultation events with the regional Beidou constellation and the full GPS constellation, under the limitation of the GNOS instrument occultation channel number. This paper presents the instrument performance as derived from analysis of measurement data in laboratory and mountain-based occultation validation experiments at Mt. Wuling in Hebei Province. The mountain-based GNSS occultation validation tests show that GNOS can acquire or track low-elevation radio signal for rising or setting occultation events. The refractivity profiles of GNOS obtained during the mountain-based experiment were compared with those from radiosondes. The results show that the refractivity profiles obtained by GNOS are consistent with those from the radiosonde. The rms of the differences between the GNOS and radiosonde refractivities is less than 3%.

We tested whether injection of contrast medium via right or left arm would affect venous artifacts on head and neck multislice spiral computed tomography (CT) angiography.326 patients were enrolled. Each patient was injected with 10 ml of contrast medium at 5 ml/sec. Time of peak contrast value plus an additional 1 sec was defined as delay time. Another 40 ml of contrast medium were injected with the same injection speed. The scanning area ranged from the aortic arch to the top of the head. Left and right forearms were used for intravenous injections of contrast medium in, respectively, 151 and 175 patients. Comparative analyses of image quality included determining contrast medium residues remaining in the superior vena cava, brachiocephalic vein, or subclavian vein, and comparisons of quality of three-dimensional CT angiography.In 75% of head and neck angiographies, the delay time of the common carotid artery ranged from 16 to 22 sec. In 60% of the images, the quality was graded as excellent, with the left arm injection resulting in delay time of23 sec and the right arm delay time of18 sec. The CT imaging quality after contrast injections via left or right arms was statistically significant (p0.05). The image quality after right arm injection was better than after left arm injection.Intravenous injection of contrast medium via right arm reduces artifacts from contrast medium residues and improves the image quality of head and neck CT angiography.

As a new member of space-based radio occultation sounder, the GNOS (Global Navigation Satellite System Occultation Sounder) mounted on FY-3C has been carrying out the atmospheric sounding since 23 September 2013. GNOS takes a daily measurement up to 800 times with GPS (Global Position System) and Chinese BDS (BeiDou navigation satellite) signals. The refractivity profiles from GNOS are compared with the co-located ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) analyses in this paper. Bias and standard deviation have being calculated as the function of altitude. The mean bias is about 0.2 % from the near surface to 35 km. The average standard deviation is within 2 % while it is down to about 1 % in the range 5–30 km where best soundings are usually made. To evaluate the performance of GNOS, COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) and GRAS/METOP-A (GNSS Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding) data are also compared to ECMWF analyses as the reference. The results show that GNOS/FY-3C meets the requirements of the design well. It possesses a sounding capability similar to COSMIC and GRAS in the vertical range of 0–30 km, though it needs improvement in higher altitude. Generally, it provides a new data source for global NWP (numerical weather prediction) community.

Self-incompatibility (SI) is one of several mechanisms that have evolved to prevent inbreeding in plants. SI in Brassica is controlled by the polymorphic S locus complex. Two S locus-encoded proteins are coordinately expressed in the stigma epidermis: the cell wall-localized S locus glycoprotein (SLG) and the plasma membrane-anchored S receptor kinase (SRK). These proteins are thought to recognize a pollen factor that leads to the rejection of self-pollen. Evidence has accumulated that indicates that both proteins are necessary for the ability of the stigma to inhibit self-pollen. However, it has not been possible to prove this necessity definitively or to demonstrate that these genes are sufficient for this phenotype, because previous attempts to transfer this phenotype via transformation have not been successful. In this study, two overlapping S locus genomic clones, which cover ≈55 kilobases of DNA and contain the SLG , SRK , and an anther-expressed gene in the region common to the two, were introduced into a self-compatible Brassica napus line. The resulting transgenic plants were shown to carry the female part of the SI phenotype, rejecting pollen in a haplotype-specific manner. However, the pollen SI phenotype was not found in any of the transgenic plants. These data show that the SLG and SRK are sufficient for the female side but not the male side of the SI phenotype in Brassica and that there must be an independent pollen S factor encoded outside the cloned region.

Scented geranium (Pelargonium sp. `Fren-sham') was transformed with a gene encoding an antimicrobial protein (Ace-AMP1) from onion through an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system. The binary vector pFAJ3033 contained the coding region of the Ace-AMP1 preproprotein-encoding cDNA. Transformants were verified by polymerase chain reaction and Southern blot analysis. Transgenic plants expressing high levels of Ace-AMP1 were identified by immunoblots and those plants were shown to have increased resistance to Botrytis cinerea leaf infection.

Three novel dihydroisocoumarins, (2E)-3-[(3S)-5-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-6-methoxy-1-oxo-1H-2-benzopyran-3-yl]-2-propenoic acid (1), (3S)-5-hydroxymellein (3) and (3S)-7-hydroxymellein (4) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of a culture broth of a strain of the fungus Cephalosporium sp. AL031, together with one known compound (35)-mellein (2). Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic analysis and comparison of their spectral data with reported values.
