1. Individually addressed entangling gates in a two-dimensional ion crystal

Abstract

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) ion crystals may represent a promising path to scale up qubit numbers for ion trap quantum information processing. However, to realize universal quantum computing in this system, individually addressed high-fidelity two-qubit entangling gates still remain challenging due to the inevitable micromotion of ions in a 2D crystal as well as the technical difficulty in 2D addressing. Here we demonstrate two-qubit entangling gates between any ion pairs in a 2D crystal of four ions. We use symmetrically placed crossed acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) to drive Raman transitions and achieve an addressing crosstalk error below 0.1%. We design and demonstrate a gate sequence by alternatingly addressing two target ions, making it compatible with any single-ion addressing techniques without crosstalk from multiple addressing beams. We further examine the gate performance versus the micromotion amplitude of the ions and show that its effect can be compensated by a recalibration of the laser intensity without degrading the gate fidelity. Our work paves the way for ion trap quantum computing with hundreds to thousands of qubits on a 2D ion crystal.

3. Astragalus and Ginseng Polysaccharides Improve Developmental, Intestinal Morphological, and Immune Functional Characters of Weaned Piglets

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is a major issue in animal industries and antibiotic-free alternatives are needed to treat infectious diseases and improve performance of pigs. Plant extracts have been suggested as a potential solution. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of Astragalus polysaccharides (Aps) and ginseng polysaccharide (Gps) on growth performance, intestinal morphology, immune function, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and microfloral community in weaned piglets. A total of 180 weaned piglets were randomly divided into three treatment groups during a 28-days feeding experiment, including a basal diet (Con), basal diet supplemented with 800 mg/kg Aps (Aps), and basal diet supplemented with 800 mg/kg Gps (Gps). Results showed that both Aps and Gps increased body weight, average daily gain and feed conversion rate, and reduced the rate of diarrhea. Gps also decreased aspartate aminotransferase compared to the Con piglets after 14 days. No significant effects on alanine aminotransferase were observed. Both Aps and Gps piglets exhibited higher serum immunoglobulin M levels after 14 and 28 days, and also decreased jejunal crypt depth, increased jejunal villus length and villus height/crypt depth ratio, and increased expression of toll-like receptor 4, myeloid differentiation primary response 88, nuclear factor-kappa B proteins in the jejunum. Aps and Gps piglets also had higher concentrations of acetic acid, isobutyric acid, and butyrate in their colon. Data of high-throughput sequencing revealed that Aps and Gps affected bacterial quantity and diversity in the colon. Species richness and evenness were higher in both Aps and Gps piglets than the control piglets. Aps and Gps piglets also had a higher relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae and Anaerostipes, and the Aps piglets had a higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus gasseri and L. amylovorus. Therefore, dietary supplementation with Aps and Gps could be beneficial for optimizing the performance of industry pigs and reducing dependence on antibiotics. Furthermore, Plant polysaccharides play a great role in promoting the sustainable development of animal husbandry.

6. Tuning and switching of band gap of the periodically undulated beam by the snap through buckling

Abstract

We propose highly tuning and switching band gaps of phononic crystals through the snap through buckling by investigating wave propagation in a designed tractable undulated beam with single material and periodically arched shape. A series of numerical analyses are conducted to offer a thorough understanding of the evolution of the band gaps as a function of the vertical applied load. We find out that the interesting snap through buckling induced by the vertical load can alter the width of the band gap of the undulated beam dramatically, even switch them on and off. Our researches show an effective strategy to tune the band gaps of phononic crystals through the snap through buckling behavior.

Abstract

The bulk Ca2CrO4 samples were synthesized under high pressure and high temperature conditions using CaO and CrO2 as starting materials. The structure of the prepared Ca2CrO4 solid is characterized by X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement as tetragonal structure with the space group I41/acd. The CrO6 octahedrons elongate along c axis and rotate in ab plane. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurement results indicate spin glass behavior at low temperature. Temperature dependence of resistivity measurement results show Ca2CrO4 is an insulator at both ambient condition and high pressure.

Abstract

The response of soil microbial communities to soil quality changes is a sensitive indicator of soil ecosystem health. The current work investigated soil microbial communities under different fertilization treatments in a 31-year experiment using the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profile method. The experiment consisted of five fertilization treatments: without fertilizer input (CK), chemical fertilizer alone (MF), rice (Oryza sativaL.) straw residue and chemical fertilizer (RF), low manure rate and chemical fertilizer (LOM), and high manure rate and chemical fertilizer (HOM). Soil samples were collected from the plough layer and results indicated that the content of PLFAs were increased in all fertilization treatments compared with the control. The iC15:0 fatty acids increased significantly in MF treatment but decreased in RF, LOM and HOM, while aC15:0 fatty acids increased in these three treatments. Principal component (PC) analysis was conducted to determine factors defining soil microbial community structure using the 21 PLFAs detected in all treatments: the first and second PCs explained 89.8% of the total variance. All unsaturated and cyclopropyl PLFAs except C12:0 and C15:0 were highly weighted on the first PC. The first and second PC also explained 87.1% of the total variance among all fertilization treatments. There was no difference in the first and second PC between RF and HOM treatments. The results indicated that long-term combined application of straw residue or organic manure with chemical fertilizer practices improved soil microbial community structure more than the mineral fertilizer treatment in double-cropped paddy fields in Southern China.

Abstract

To explore the role of long non-coding ribonucleic acid-anti-differentiation non-coding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA-ANCR) in tibial fracture healing in rabbits by regulating the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) expression.A total of 60 healthy adult rabbits were evenly divided into Control group (n=20), Fracture group (n=20), and Lnc group (n=20). Then, RUNX2 transfection, Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay and relevant instruments were carried out and used to determine the differences in dry weight, bone mineral density, bone mechanical strength, and RUNX2 expression in tibiae among three groups of rabbits.Comparison of the bone mineral density in rabbit tibiae among the three groups showed that the bone mineral density was significantly lower in Fracture group than that in Control group (p0.05), and it was slightly higher in Lnc group than in Fracture group (p0.05). The dry weight of the full-length tibiae in Fracture group was significantly decreased compared with that in Control group (p0.05), and Lnc group had an increased dry weight of tibiae in comparison with Fracture group (p0.05). The maximum load, flexural strength, elastic stress, elastic strain, elastic modulus, maximum stress, and maximum strain in Fracture group were lower than those in both Control group and Lnc group (p0.05). Compared with those in Fracture group, the amount of new collagen was overtly increased in Lnc group, and that of mature collagen was decreased (p0.05). The relative expression level of RUNX2 in tibial bone tissues was evidently lower in Fracture group than that in Control group (p0.05), and it was markedly higher in Lnc group than that in Fracture group (p0.05).Down-regulating lncRNA-ANCR activates and triggers the expression of RUNX2 that facilitates the growth and metabolism of bone tissues to play an important role in the repair of bone tissues and promote the healing of the tibial fracture.

Abstract

The effect of short-term drought stress on the water content, antioxidant system and photosynthetic characteristics was investigated using cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings. The results indicated that polyethylene glycol induced water stress reduced water content in shoots of cucumber seedling after treatment of 36 hours, and caused obvious reductions in net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration and transpiration of leaves. In addition, water stress significantly reduced the photosynthetic pigment content and inhibited photochemical activity, including actual photochemical efficiency, maximal quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry and coefficient for photochemical quenching. Meanwhile non-photochemical quenching increased. As responses to drought stress, significant increases in electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide levels were detected in leaves. The superoxide dismutases, catalase, glutathione reductase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities, protein, ascorbate and glutathione content, all decreased and peroxidases activity increased, while ascorbate peroxidase and monodehydroascorbate reductase activities exhibited different trend under different degree of water stress. Therefore, it can be concluded that water stress strongly disrupted the normal metabolism of leaves and restrained water absorption.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether lncSNHG15 promoted the proliferation and migration of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells by binding to miR-211-3p, thereby participating in the development of NSCLC.Expressions of lncSNHG15 and miR-211-3p in NSCLC tissues and para-cancerous tissues were detected by quantitative Real-Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). LncSNHG15 and miR-211-3p expression in NSCLC cell lines were determined as well. Furthermore, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and transwell assays were performed to evaluate the effects of lncSNHG15 and miR-211-3p on cell proliferation and migration, respectively. The binding relationship between miR-211-3p and ZNF217, as well as between miR-211-3p and lncSNHG15, were further verified by the Luciferase reporter gene assay. In addition, rescue experiments were performed to verify whether lncSNHG15 promoted the proliferation and migration of NSCLC cells by degrading miR-211-3p.The expression of lncSNHG15 in NSCLC tissues was significantly higher than that of para-cancerous tissues. In particular, the expression of lncSNHG15 in NSCLC patients with stage III-IV was higher than those with stage I-II. Furthermore, lncSNHG15 over-expression remarkably promoted the proliferation and migration of NSCLC cells (A549 and H358). The Luciferase reporter gene assay further indicated that lncSNHG15 could bind to miR-211-3p. Simultaneously, miR-211-3p expression in NSCLC tissues was significantly lower than that of para-cancerous tissues. The over-expression of miR-211-3p could inhibit the proliferation and migration of A549 and H358 cells. Meanwhile, the Luciferase reporter gene assay indicated that ZNF217 was the target of miR-211-3p. In addition, the over-expression of ZNF217 reversed the inhibitory effect of miR-211-3p on the proliferative and migratory potentials of A549 and H358 cells.High expression of lncSNHG15 promoted the proliferation and migration of NSCLC cells by upregulating ZNF217 by adsorbing miR-211-3p.

Abstract

To identify stable and specific biomarkers/biomarker combinations for fatigue assessment and establish a discriminant model.Saliva was collected and electroencephalogram analysis was performed for 47 emergency physicians while awake and after continuoutas duty for 18-24 h. Physicians were divided into the fatigue and non-fatigue groups. Protein spectra of completely quantified saliva specimens were identified before and after long working hours using mass spectrometry. Data were analyzed through Proteome Discoverer software combined with SEQUEST to search protein databases. Proteins were characterized by collision-induced dissociation spectra. A global internal standard (GIS) was added to each group of samples and labeled by tandem mass tags m/z 131.1. All data were compared with GIS, and data between groups were further compared. Qualitative and quantitative data on proteins were exported for fatigue-related proteomic analysis, and a fatigue assessment model was established.We identified 767 salivary proteins in the fatigue group. The correct rates of the discriminant function of the non-fatigue and fatigue groups were 97.1% and 91.7%, respectively (the total correct rate was 95.7%).We identified 30 fatigue-related protein markers from saliva. We also established a fatigue assessment model for emergency physicians using salivary biomarkers.

Abstract

To explore the protective role of Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) after high-level glucose induction, and to investigate its underlying mechanism.Primary RGCs were isolated from 24-hour-old Sprague Dawley (SD) rats and cultured in 50 mmol/L glucose. The expression of VDR in RGCs induced by 50 mmol/L glucose at different time points was determined by Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot, respectively. Subsequently, VDR siRNA was transfected into RGCs. Transfection efficiency was determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. The protein expressions levels of VDR, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and p-STAT3 in RGCs after VDR knockdown were determined by Western blot. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) and cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay were conducted to access the viability of RGCs after high-level glucose induction. Ki-67 staining was performed to detect the proliferation of RGCs. Meanwhile, the apoptosis of RGCs was evaluated by using Annexin-V FITC/PI and TUNEL (terminal dexynucleotidyl transferase(TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling) assay, respectively. In addition, caspase-3 activity in RGCs was detected by relative commercial kit.After 4 days of high-level glucose induction, the viability of RGCs was remarkably decreased. VDR was highly expressed in RGCs during high-level glucose culture. The mRNA and protein expression levels of VDR were both significantly downregulated after the transfection of VDR siRNA in RGCs. Meanwhile, VDR knockdown in RGCs significantly increased the viability and proliferative ability of RGCs, whereas significantly decreased apoptotic rate and caspase-3 activity. In addition, the protein level of p-STAT3 in RGCs was remarkably downregulated after VDR knockdown.Inhibition of VDR exerts a protective role in high-level glucose induced RGCs damage by activating the STAT3 pathway.

Abstract

Trace water in the electrolyte can cause serious capacity fading, especially for the high voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNM) cathode. Here, we coat microporous LiAlSiO4 on LNM particles using a citric acid-based sol–gel method. LiAlSiO4 has been reported to be a good one-dimensional Li-ion conductor, ensuring that Li+ ions could cross this coating layer easily. Simultaneously, this LiAlSiO4 coating layer contains many micropores with a radius of less than 2 nm, which could anchor H2O molecules. The adsorption of H2O suppresses the formation of HF, which further suppresses Mn dissolution of the LNM material, especially at high temperature. Finally, the LiAlSiO4-modified LNM displays an obviously improved cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention of 94.36% after 150 cycles at 1C and 55 °C.

Abstract

We investigated the effects of exogenous sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a nitric oxide (NO) donor, on growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cv. Jinyou No.1) seedlings and antioxidant enzyme activities in cucumber leaves under waterlogging stress. The growth of cucumber seedlings was significantly inhibited when plants were exposed to waterlogging, whereas shoot spraying with SNP significantly alleviated the inhibition of growth from this type of stress: height, fresh and dry weights of the flooded plants increased obviously. Waterlogging also caused the activation of the antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX)), the reduction of the chlorophyll content, and the accumulation of MDA and protein in leaves. It was found that SNP treatment further potentiated the antioxidant enzyme activities and maintained the chlorophyll and protein content during the entire water-logging period; however, it reduced the MDA content. Thus, NO protects plants from oxidative damage and promotes growth by activation of antioxidant enzymes in leaves in an extent sufficient for the alleviation of membrane injury. However, exogenous NO had no significant effects on cucumber seedlings growth and antioxidant enzyme activities under nonstress conditions.

Abstract

Within Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) laser systems, many independent laser beams are required to be positioned on target with a very high degree of accuracy until shots are complete. Optical elements that are capable of moving a laser beam on the target must meet the pointing error budget. Optical elements are typically supported by systems which consist of mounts, mount frames, support structures, and foundation. The stability design for support systems in ICF laser have been developed based on the designing and evaluating experience of ShenGuangIII (SGIII). This paper will provide the methodology of position error budget. The stability allocation is developed for evaluating the performance of support systems when they are subjected to multiple sources of excitations that can cause the motion of optical elements during alignment procedures and before shots. The vibrational stability design considerations of support systems are discussed on the fundamental frequency, ambient random vibration, and modal damping. The support structures of optical elements are the relatively large and massive hybrid structure of reinforced concrete and steel frame or vessels. While the reinforced concrete portions provide optical elements stability, the steel portions afford design flexibility. Finite element analyses of ambient random vibration are typically performed to evaluate the vibrational stability performances of support systems. Finally, this paper describes the ambient random vibration and beam pointing error measurements of SGIII. The measurements show the support systems of SGIII meet design requirement. These information can be used on similar systems.

Abstract

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drug coated balloon (DCB) with paclitaxel in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD).The clinical data of 18 patients, who were diagnosed as PAD and treated with DCB from October 2013 to June 2014 in Department of Vascular Surgery, People's Liberation Army General Hospital, were retrospectively analyzed.Thirteen male and 5 female patients were in the series, the mean age of the patients was (65±7) years, and the Rutherford's categories were level 3 to 5. Patients were followed up at 3- and 6-month postoperative. The main efficacy end point were late lumen loss(LLL), rate of restenosis and clinically driven target lesion revascularization (TLR). Meanwhile, the clinical events were recorded.Mean lesion length, the percentage of total occlusions and the percentage of in-stent restenosis were (138±91) mm, 9/18 and 2/18, respectively. Rate of technical success was 18/18. At 6-month postoperative, LLL, rate of restenosis and TLR were (0.1±0.9) mm, 2/14 and 0, respectively. There was no deaths or no amputations.DCB with paclitaxel is safe in patients with PAD, and associated with reductions in LLL, restenosis and clinically driven TLR 6-month postoperative.

Abstract

To report experiences and results of complex aortic aneurysms involving the visceral arteries treating by total endovascular repair.Seventy cases of thoracoabdominal aortic lesions treating by total endovascular repair in Department of Vascular Surgery, People's Liberation Army General Hospital from January 2011 to December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 47 cases underwent chimney technique, 6 underwent sandwich technique, 15 underwent fenestration technique and 2 underwent branched stent grafts technique.The average follow-up time was 21 months, range from 3 to 47 months. Completion angiography showed that typeⅠ endoleak of chimney, sandwich, fenestration and branched stent grafts group were 9/47, 5/6, 2/15 and 0, respectively. While at 30-day typeⅠ endoleak reduced to 7/47, 2/6, 0 and 0. During follow-up, there were 3 target vessel stents occlusion in chimney group, the patency rate of target vessel stent was 95.1% (58/61). In sandwich, fenestration and branched stent grafts group, all the target vessel stents kept patent.In this study, chimney, sandwich, fenestration and branched stent grafts techniques show good short-term and midterm results, the long-term effects still need further studies.

Abstract

SUMMARYCultivar selection is a dominant factor in crop production to obtain high yield. While previous studies have evaluated a range of impacts and adaptation of climate change (CC) on crop yield, few studies have focused on evaluating the effectiveness of changing cultivars with different vernalization requirements as an adaptation. In the present study, mean and inter-annual variability of yield were quantified for three winter wheat cultivar types at three ecological sites (Shangzhuang in Beijing, Quzhou in Hebei and Huangfanqu in Henan) in the North China Plain, by linking a crop model and the outputs of Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) for both the baseline (1961–90) and future SRES scenarios A2 and B2 (2070–2100). The results showed that a warming trend prolonged the length of the vegetative growth period of local cultivars through reduced vernalization, generally leading to a negative impact on yield. However, the introduction of cultivars with relatively lower vernalization demands from warmer southern to cooler northern regions could be an effective adaptation strategy to offset the negative impact of climatic change. Adjustment in cultivars increased yield at Shangzhuang and maintained it at Quzhou and Huangfanqu. Elevated CO2 would significantly increase yield in the future with or without considering the sensitivities of the selected cultivars. The inter-annual variability of yield generally increased in the A2 scenario, but decreased in the B2 scenario. Overall, winter wheat with semi-winter types or weak-winter types would grow preferentially, while cultivars with winter types would probably be reduced in future.

Abstract

Objective This study aimed to identify the oral microbial diversity of healthy Chinese Han children. Methods Dental plaques were sampled from the oral cavity of ten healthy Chinese Han children. The oral microbiome was examined using the 16S rRNA–based Human Oral Microbe Identification Microarray. The microbial diversity and similarity were analyzed using the Chao–Jaccard similarity index. Results A total of 112 species, which belonged to nine bacterial phyla and 41 genera, were detected. Each individual harbored an average of 54.1 microbial species (ranging from 37 to 69) and 26.2 genera (ranging from 21 to 31), with interindividual variations both at the species and genus level. Thirteen genera were conserved among all individuals. The Chao–Jaccard similarity index averages, at the genus and species level, were 0.642 (ranging from 0.485 to 0.871) and 0.506 (ranging from 0.338 to 0.676), respectively, suggesting that the healthy oral community was more conserved at the genus level than at the species level. Conclusion Although there was interindividual variation in the oral microflora, some bacterial genera were conserved among individuals, supporting the existence of a core microbiome in the oral cavity of healthy Chinese Han children.

Abstract

Long-span suspension bridges carrying both highway and railway have been built in wind-prone regions. The estimation of fatigue damage of such bridges under the long-term combined action of railway, highway, and wind loading represents a challenging task in consideration of randomness in multiple types of loading. This study presents a framework for fatigue reliability analysis of multiloading long-span suspension bridges equipped with structural health monitoring systems (SHMS), and the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in Hong Kong is taken as a case study. A limit-state function in the daily sum of m-power stress ranges is first defined for fatigue reliability analysis. Probabilistic models of railway, highway, and wind loading are established on the basis of the measurement data acquired from the SHMS. Abstract

Symmetrical push-pull low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed on Ti-2Al-2.5Zr samples with different grain sizes (5 and 40 μm) at room temperature (RT) and low temperature (77 K). The results show that the coarse-grained samples of 40 μm exhibit a higher ductility and LCF life than the fine-grained ones at RT. Meanwhile, the fine-grained samples of 5 μm displayed improved ductility and LCF life at 77 K compared with those at RT. Microstructural observations using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that a transition occurred in the plastic deformation mode, from twinning with slip to slip alone, as the grain size decreased from 40 to 5 μm at RT. Conversely, in the fine-grained samples fatigued at 77 K, twinning was activated and became one of the dominant plastic deformation modes. The improvement in the LCF life of the coarse-grained samples at RT and the fine-grained ones at 77 K could be attributed to the activation of deformation twinning. In addition, the cyclic stress response curves showed that cyclic stress saturation was exhibited in the fine-grained samples at all strain ranges. An initial cyclic hardening followed by cyclic softening was displayed ahead of the cyclic stress saturation in coarse-grained samples at high strain amplitudes. When the testing temperature decreased to 77 K, cyclic stress hardening prior to cyclic stress saturation also appeared in the fine-grained samples. The relation among the grain size, testing temperature, plastic deformation modes, and LCF life in Ti-2Al-2.5Zr was subsequently discussed.
