Background The objective of this anatomical study was to perform the morphometry of dried lumbar vertebrae in human cadavers. Methods This study utilized 200 adult human cadaveric dried lumbar vertebrae. The digital Vernier calipers was used to perform the measurements. The height, antero-posterior length, transverse length of the body of the vertebrae, interpedicular distance at the lateral ends, lamina length, height and thickness, superior and inferior articular facet height and width, mid sagittal and transverse diameter of vertebral foramen, height, width and thickness of the pars inter-articularis were measured. Results The vertebral body’s anteroposterior length was more at the lower border than at the superior border (p < 0.01). The length of lamina was higher over the right in comparison to the left (p < 0.001). The height of lamina, width of inferior articular facet, diameter of lateral recess and thickness of pars inter-articularis were greater for the left sided specimens (p < 0.01). The statistical significance was not observed for the comparison of the remaining parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusion This anatomical study offered several dimensions of lumbar vertebrae, which are essential in the surgical practice. The implants at the lumbar vertebrae need to be manufactured based on the anatomical dimensions of that particular sample population.

With the rapid development of the national power grid, there is an increasing and strict demand for accurate intelligent management. However, the current detection algorithms have limited abilities under adverse conditions, especially in regions like Yunnan Province with complex terrain. To address this issue, we propose a method that utilizes infrared and visible images to make the images more informative, thereby improving the accuracy of the detection algorithm for electric power construction site safety. First, we design channel attention (CA) module and pixel attention (PA) module to focus on more important channels and resist thick haze pixels that focus on the thick haze pixels and more important channel information. Furthermore, we design a two-stage discriminator which imposes two restrictions on the fused results. Finally, we conduct a large number of comparison experiments with state-of-the-art methods, and the results show that our proposed fusion method achieves excellent performance in infrared and visible image fusion. This method has good prospects for application in the safety supervision of power construction sites and provides a line of defense for construction workers.

Photosynthesis is one of the fundamental processes influencing crop growth and productivity. In order to understand better the basis of variation in net photosynthetic rate (PN) and yield potential in rice, two backcross populations derived from Swarna × O. nivara were studied. Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were taken at flowering stage and data on yield traits at harvest. PN was significantly correlated with stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, mesophyll conductance, carboxylation efficiency, yield per plant (YLDP), and dry mass in both populations. Ten introgression lines (ILs) showed higher PN than their parents. IL 230S showed highest PN with increased YLDP than the remaining ILs. Single marker analysis showed RM514 and RM48 was positively associated with PN and YLDP in popA, whereas RM204 and RM122 in popB. The first 4 principal components contributed 92 and 93% to the total genetic variation in each population, respectively.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of NITI mechanical rotary instrumentation and Hedstrom file for gutta percha removal using dearing technique. Method: Forty extracted human single rooted premolar, each with a single canal were selected. The samples were decoronated to leave 17 mm root and Instrumented with K-flles upto MAF 30 using step back technique. Samples were obturated using cold lateral condensation of gutta-perdta and AH Plus sealer. The teeth were then randomly divided Into four groups of 10 specimens each. After 2 weeks all the canals were then retreated by either ProTaper re-treatment files, M--two re-treatment files, R-Endo re-treatment flies or Hedstrom flies. The amount of remaining filling materials after re-treatment procedures was assessed by stereomlcroscope. Also time required for reaching original working length and for removal of obturating material (in min) was measured. Statistical analysis was accomplished using one way Kruskal-Wallls ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U test. Result: M-two re-treatment flies showed least amount of gutta perdta/sealer followed by Pro Taper re-treatment files, R-Endo re-treatment flies and Hedstrom files. Conclusion: Under the experimental conditions, significant difference was observed between Pro Taper re-treatment flies&... Hedstrom flies and Mtwo re-treatment flies&... Hedstrom flies for gutta percha/sealer removal. Complete removal of materials did not occur with any of the instrument systems investigated.

Loss of eye has a bad effect on the psychology of the patient. Eye prosthesis is fabricated to regain the patient’s confidence by meticulous replacement of the missing eye. Immediate fitting of an anophthalmic socket with an artificial eye may not always be possible, and a delayed prosthesis delivery may result in settling and sinking of the prosthesis into the socket, therefore requiring orbital cavity conformation. It becomes a challenging task for a maxillofacial prosthodontist to fabricate a prosthesis that replicates the healthy side of the face. This article presents a short review of three functional ocular impression techniques to achieve a better fit of the prosthesis to the defect area. These techniques aim to combine cosmetic excellence with comfort for greater benefit to the patients.

Introduction: COVID-19 infection caused by SARS-Corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused large number of infections and mortality globally. There are no proven medications to prevent and treat COVID-19, nevertheless several potential pharmacotherapeutic agents have been tried. Remdesivir was found to be effective in few studies. Aims: To assess the outcome in COVID-19 confirmed cases receiving Remdesivir as compared to conventional therapy. Methodology: This study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in South India after the approval of the Institutional ethical committee. It was a medical records-based retrospective, longitudinal study. Medical records of the inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection were reviewed from the period of June 15, 2020 to September 15, 2020. This study was conducted to assess the clinical and laboratory profile and outcome in the patients admitted with moderate and severe COVID-19 disease who received Remdesivir. Statistical Analysis: The analysis was done using SPSS Inc. released 2009, PASW statistics for Windows version 18.0, Chicago. Results: One hundred eleven (N = 111) patients were included in the study. 56 patients received the conventional treatment (Hydroxychloroquine HCQ) and 55 patients received Remdesivir. It was seen that among patients treated with HCQ, 24 (42.9%) required non-invasive ventilation and seven (12.7%) patients treated with Remdesivir required it (P = 0.001). It was noticed that the mean duration of hospitalization was 16.6 days in HCQ group and was 11.4 days in Remdesivir group (P = 0.021). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Remdesivir does have benefit in reducing the mortality and duration of hospital stay. There was reduced requirement of non-invasive and invasive ventilation among patients treated with Remdesivir.

Using radiofrequency energy for closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) has been reported by us previously. In this article we report the early and late outcome of the first group in whom patent ductus arteriosus has been occluded with radiofrequency. Six children with PDA were enrolled. The procedure was successful in five cases and transient hoarseness was observed in 2 cases as the only complication.

Objective During the COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate in the United States peaked at 14.8% in April 2020. We examined patterns in unemployment following this peak in counties with rapid increases in COVID-19 incidence. Method We used CDC aggregate county data to identify counties with rapid increases in COVID-19 incidence (rapid riser counties) during July 1–October 31, 2020. We used a linear regression model with fixed effect to calculate the change of unemployment rate difference in these counties, stratified by the county’s social vulnerability (an indicator compiled by CDC) in the two months before the rapid riser index month compared to the index month plus one month after the index month. Results Among the 585 (19% of U.S. counties) rapid riser counties identified, the unemployment rate gap between the most and least socially vulnerable counties widened by 0.40 percentage point (pConclusion The widened unemployment gap after COVID-19 incidence rapid rise between the most and least socially vulnerable counties suggests that it may take longer for socially and economically disadvantaged communities to recover. Loss of income and benefits due to unemployment could hinder behaviors that prevent spread of COVID-19 (e.g., seeking healthcare) and could impede response efforts including testing and vaccination. Addressing the social needs within these vulnerable communities could help support public health response measures.

Introduction: Integrated teaching helps the students to understand the concepts well and conceptualise the subject well. Clinical cases introduced in the first year are interesting and stimulative for the student but may overwhelm and confuse the student. Aim: To know the perception and acceptance of integrated teaching among the first year Bachelor of Medicine and Medicine of Surgery (MBBS) students which include multiple case scenarios. Materials and Methods: This educational research is a crosssectional observational study involving first year medical students in Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore. Study was conducted for a period of one year (August 2018 to June 2019). Horizontal integration of a system in the first year MBBS subjects were done. This was followed by an interactive session conducted by a Clinician basically comprising of multiple case scenarios on the particular system. The sessions focussed on integration of basic medical science subjects and their application in the case scenarios. Six organ-systems were similarly covered. The integrated sessions involved in class discussions of the clinical cases and were designed, implemented and moderated by two faculties (clinicians and basic science faculty). Collected data were entered into MS Excel, and analysis was done using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software. The students’ feedback regarding the perception of integrated teaching was collected on the Five point likerts scale using a validated questionnaire and analysed. Results: The number of students included in the study was 140. About 135 (96.43%) of the students felt that integrated teaching using multiple case scenarios motivates them to learn in a better way. About 133 (95%) of students felt that integrated teaching helps them to understand concepts well, stimulates the critical thinking. About 136 (97.14%) of students felt that integrated teaching helped them to understand the topic in a holistic way. Conclusion: The students felt that the integrated teaching using multiple case scenarios enhanced their perception and comprehension of the diseases and helped them to understand the relevance of application of pre-clinical knowledge in clinical practise.

Objective To describe the work environment and COVID-19 mitigation measures for homeless shelter workers and assess occupational risk factors for COVID-19. Methods Between June 9-August 10, 2020, we conducted a self-administered survey among homeless shelter workers in Washington, Massachusetts, Utah, Maryland, and Georgia. We calculated frequencies for work environment, personal protective equipment use, and SARS-CoV-2 testing history. We used generalized linear models to produce unadjusted prevalence ratios (PR) to assess risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results Of the 106 respondents, 43.4% reported frequent close contact with clients; 75% were worried about work-related SARS-CoV-2 infections; 15% reported testing positive. Close contact with clients was associated with testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 (PR 3.97, 95%CI 1.06, 14.93). Conclusions Homeless shelter workers may be at risk of being exposed to individuals with COVID-19 during the course of their work. Frequent close contact with clients was associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Protecting these critical essential workers by implementing mitigation measures and prioritizing for COVID-19 vaccination is imperative during the pandemic.

Background China is vulnerable to zoonotic disease transmission due to a large agricultural work force, sizable domestic livestock population, and a highly biodiverse ecology. To better address this threat, representatives from the human, animal, and environmental health sectors in China held a One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization (OHZDP) workshop in May 2019 to develop a list of priority zoonotic diseases for multisectoral, One Health collaboration. Methods Representatives used the OHZDP Process, developed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), to prioritize zoonotic diseases for China. Representatives defined the criteria used for prioritization and determined questions and weights for each individual criterion. A review of English and Chinese literature was conducted prior to the workshop to collect disease specific information on prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) from China and the Western Pacific Region for zoonotic diseases considered for prioritization. Results Thirty zoonotic diseases were evaluated for prioritization. Criteria selected included: 1) disease hazard/severity (case fatality rate) in humans, 2) epidemic scale and intensity (in humans and animals) in China, 3) economic impact, 4) prevention and control, and 5) social impact. Disease specific information was obtained from 792 articles (637 in English and 155 in Chinese) and subject matter experts for the prioritization process. Following discussion of the OHZDP Tool output among disease experts, five priority zoonotic diseases were identified for China: avian influenza, echinococcosis, rabies, plague, and brucellosis. Conclusion Representatives agreed on a list of five priority zoonotic diseases that can serve as a foundation to strengthen One Health collaboration for disease prevention and control in China; this list was developed prior to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Next steps focused on establishing a multisectoral, One Health coordination mechanism, improving multisectoral linkages in laboratory testing and surveillance platforms, creating multisectoral preparedness and response plans, and increasing workforce capacity.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the presence of glucose hypometabolism (GHM) and brain iron accumulation (BIA), two potential pathological mechanisms in neurodegenerative disease, in different regions of the brain in people with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or Parkinson’s disease (PD). Studies that conducted fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to map GHM or quantitative susceptibility mapping—magnetic resonance imaging (QSM–MRI) to map BIA in the brains of patients with AD or PD were reviewed. Regions of the brain where GHM or BIA were reported in each disease were compared. In AD, both GHM and BIA were reported in the hippocampus, temporal, and parietal lobes. GHM alone was reported in the cingulate gyrus, precuneus and occipital lobe. BIA alone was reported in the caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus. In PD, both GHM and BIA were reported in thalamus, globus pallidus, putamen, hippocampus, and temporal and frontal lobes. GHM alone was reported in cingulate gyrus, caudate nucleus, cerebellum, and parietal and occipital lobes. BIA alone was reported in the substantia nigra and red nucleus. GHM and BIA are observed independent of one another in various brain regions in both AD and PD. This suggests that GHM is not always necessary or sufficient to cause BIA and vice versa. Hypothesis-driven FDG-PET and QSM–MRI imaging studies, where both are conducted on individuals with AD or PD, are needed to confirm or disprove the observations presented here about the potential relationship or lack thereof between GHM and BIA in AD and PD.

Abstract Background Health care workers are at high risk for tuberculosis (TB). China, a high burden TB country, has no policy on medical surveillance for TB among healthcare workers. In this paper, we evaluate whether China’s national TB diagnostic guidelines could be used as a framework to screen healthcare workers for pulmonary TB disease in a clinical setting in China. Methods Between April–August 2010, healthcare workers from 28 facilities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China were eligible for TB screening, comprised of symptom check, chest X-ray and tuberculin skin testing. Healthcare workers were categorized as having presumptive, confirmed, or clinically-diagnosed pulmonary TB, using Chinese national guidelines. Results All healthcare workers (N=4347) were eligible for TB screening, of which 4285 (99%) participated in at least one TB screening test. Of the healthcare workers screened, 2% had cough for ≥ 14 days, 3% had a chest X-ray consistent with TB, and 10% had a tuberculin skin test induration ≥ 20 mm. Of these, 124 healthcare workers were identified with presumptive TB (i.e., cough for ≥ 14 days in the past 4 weeks or x-ray consistent with TB). Twelve healthcare workers met the case definition for clinically-diagnosed pulmonary TB, but none were diagnosed with TB during the study period. Conclusion A substantial proportion of healthcare workers in Inner Mongolia had signs, symptoms, or test results suggestive of TB disease that could have been identified using national TB diagnostic guidelines as a screening framework. However, achieving medical surveillance in China will require a framework that increases the ease, accuracy, and acceptance of TB screening in the medical community. Routine screening with improved diagnostics should be considered to detect tuberculosis disease among healthcare workers and reduce transmission in health care settings in China.

Dysgerminomas are aggressive germ cell tumors that typically have a favorable prognosis, especially in patients diagnosed with early stage disease. We recount the history of a 23-year-old woman who was treated for a stage IA ovarian dysgerminoma in November 2017. Postoperatively, the patient was noncompliant insofar as obtaining routine lab evaluations; ten months later, she was diagnosed with a cranial metastasis that extended into the meninges. The patient subsequently underwent a craniotomy and adjuvant etoposide, bleomycin and cisplatin chemotherapy to which she initially responded; however, during cycle 4, she developed pancytopenia whereupon the chemotherapy was summarily discontinued. Thereafter, the patient was surveilled and currently, she remains in clinical remission. Early stage ovarian dysgerminoma, albeit rarely, has the capacity to metastasize to the cranium or brain, further underscoring the significance of employing active follow-up with these patients. The Chinese horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus is an endangered marine benthic species of great biomedical value and scientific significance. In this study, T. tridentatus hemocyte transcriptome was sequenced to rapidly develop molecular resources using the Illumina paired-end sequencing platform. Deep sequencing generated a total of 38402764 reads that consisted of 7.7 Gbp raw data, which were assembled into 38759 unigenes with an average length of 668.6 bp. A total of 608 microsatellite loci and 71959 high-confidence single nucleotide polymorphisms were discovered. All the assembled unigenes were annotated by running BLASTx similarity searches on Nr, Swiss-Prot, COG, and KEGG databases; of which 17446 (45.0%) unigenes showed significant matches (E-value
