2. Fabrication of high-aspect-ratio sub-diffraction-limit microstructures by two-photon-absorption photopolymerization

Micro-cell structures with side-walls as thin as 0.70 μm and aspect ratios as high as 6.7 are fabricated by single-layer writing through two-photon-absorption (TPA) photopolymerization. The use of a moderate-numerical-aperture (N.A.) objective lens to obtain a much more elongated voxel and an in situ ultraviolet (UV) pre-exposure step to improve the sensitivity of TPA photopolymerization are the main factors responsible for the high aspect ratio and sub-diffraction-limit resolution that are achieved.

3. Multi-siting and mode locking in a Yb3+:CS-FAP laser

A Yb 3+ :CS-FAP (Yb 3+ :Ca 4 Sr(PO 4 ) 3 F) laser has been actively mode locked to generate pulses as short as 35 ps, which were far from transform limited. Intra cavity pulse compression failed to realise the femtosecond pulse generation potential of this relatively broad bandwidth (∼ 10 nm) and efficient laser material. Site-selective excitation techniques were employed to demonstrate an excitation wavelength-dependent laser emission. This spectral inhomogeneity arises from the disorder on the metal host site which is due to random Ca and Sr occupation. Such a characteristic most likely prohibited ultrashort pulse generation with this sample.

Compact, all-solid-state, femtosecond Cr 4+ :YAG and Cr 4+ :forsterite lasers have been demonstrated. In optimised cavities, self-starting of the mode-locking in Cr 4+ :YAG was observed generating pulse durations of 43 fs, while with Cr 4+ :forsterite, pulses as short as 68 fs were obtained.

We have observed true self-starting Kerr-lens mode locking in two distinct solid-state laser systems operating at room temperature by optimizing the cavity geometry to maximize the amplitude modulation with respect to the intracavity power variation. Pulses of 15 ps have been obtained from a Pr(3+):YLF laser system operating at 607 nm, and 53-fs pulses have been obtained from Cr(4+):YAG at 1.54 microm.

A compact Cr4+:YAG tunable solid state laser pump source operating broadly around 1.48 µm has been used to pump an Er3+ fibre laser and amplifier. The laser exhibited a 55% slope efficiency and output powers in excess of 21 dBm. At 1.55 µm, the amplifier had a measured gain of 25 dB for a launched pump power of 23.6 dBm. Increased power scaling should be readily achieved.

This paper reviews ultrafast Kerr Lens Mode-locked solid- state lasers with particular emphasis on all-solid-state diode-pumped laser technology which has the potential to provide low-cost compact devices for ultrafast instrumentation, particularly for biomedical applications.We have demonstrated the use of ultrafast solid-state lasers for 3D imaging through turbid media using time-gated photorefractive holography, and for fluorescence lifetime imaging.

The development of Kerr Lens mode-locked (KLM) solid-state lasers [1, 2] has demonstrated the potential for convenient user friendly ultrafast laser systems which may be commercialised and applied in a wide range of scientific and technological areas. Self-starting KLM has recently been shown to be straightforward in Ti: sapphire lasers [3] and may be extended to any other solid-state laser medium to yield a relatively simple picosecond or femtosecond laser with no active components to increase the complexity of the system and no resonant saturable absorbers to compromise the tunability.

14. Passive mode-locking and dispersion measurement of a cw sub-100 femtosecond Cr4+:YAG laser

- Abstract
The rapid development of ultrafast tunable solid-state lasers has extended to the near infrared with the demonstration of mode-locked Cr4+:Forsterite' and Cr4+: YAG lasers.2 Previously we reported the first ultrafast Cr4+:YAG laser, which was actively mode-locked with an acoustooptic modulator to yield 26 ps pulses." Subsequent refinements have reduced the pulse duration to 10 ps and we have also generated ~ 20 ps pulses using synchronous mode-locking. We now report on passive mode-locking of this laser medium. We have observed that, although mode-locking was achieved across almost the full laser tuning range (coating-limited to 1.37–1.58 μm), femtosecond operation was only possible above 1.49 μm. Following a measurement of the intracavity group velocity dispersion (GVD), we attribute this to the deletirious effects of water absorption lines.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars with improved nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) under low and medium N conditions will help to minimise production costs and nitrate-N contamination. The study was conducted to determine the NUE diversities of winter wheat genotypes, and to evaluate the possible physiological mechanisms contributing to these differences. A set of 12 winter wheat genotypes, including S4185 as control genotype, were grown at high N (applied with 180 kg N/ha as urea) and low N (with no N fertiliser, N-deficient) plots in 2005–06 and 2007–08 growing seasons (i.e. four environments). ANOVA showed significant differences among genotypes for all traits measured. We have measured the partial widths of the Z 0 into lepton pairs, and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e + e − → μ + μ − using the L3 detector at LEP. We obtain an average Γ ll of 83.0±2.1±1.1 MeV.From this result and the asymmetry measurement, we extract the values of the vector and axial vector couplings of the Z 0 to leptons: g rmv =−0.066 −0.027 +0.046 and g rmA = −0.495 −0.007 +0.007 .

From a fit to the impact parameter distribution of lepton tracks from semileptonic b decay, the lifetime of B-hadrons produced in e + e − collisions at the Z 0 is measured to be 1.32±0.08 (stat.)±0.09(syst.) ps. Combined with an earlier measurement of the branching ratio Br(B→l ν X), the CKM matrix element | V cb | is determined to be 0.046±0.002 (exp.) −0.003 +0.004 (theory).

We have searched for lepton flavour violation in Z0 boson decays into lepton pairs, Z0→μτ, Z0→eτ, and Z0→eμ. The data sample is based on an integrated luminosity of 10.4 pb-1 corresponding to 370 000 Z0’s produced. We obtain upper limits on the branching ratios of 4.8 X 10-5 for the μτ 3.4 X 10-5 for the eτ and 2.4 X 10-5 for the eμ decay modes at the 95% confidence level., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

We have measured the properties of Z0 → b b decays using a sample of 944 inclusive muon events, corresponding to 18 000 hadron events obtained with the L3 detector at LEP. We measured the partial decay width of the Z0 into b b , Γ b b =353±48 MeV , and we determined the vector coupling of the Z0 to the b quark; grmv2(b)=0.095±0.047. We measured the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e− → b b events at √s≈Mv, and obtained A b b =13.3±9.9% .

We have made a precise measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Z0→hadrons with the L3 detector at LEP, covering the s range from 88.28 to 95.04 GeV. From a fit to the Z0 mass, total width, and the hadronic cross section to be MZ0=91.160 ± 0.024 (experiment) ±0.030(LEP) GeV, ΓZ0=2.539±0.054 GeV, and σh(MZ0)=29.5±0.7 nb. We also used the fit to the Z0 peak cross section and the width todetermine Γinvisible=0.548±0.029 GeV, which corresponds to 3.29±0.17 species of light neutrinos. The possibility of four or more neutrino flavors is thus ruled out at the 4σ confidence level.

We report the results of first physics runs of the L3 detector at LEP. Based on 2538 hadron events, we determined the mass m z 0 and the width Γ z 0 of the intermediate vector boson Z 0 to be m z 0 =91.132±0.057 GeV (not including the 46 MeV LEP machine energy uncertainty) and Γ z 0 =2.588±0.137 GeV. We also determined Γ invisible =0.567±0.080 GeV, corresponding to 3.42±0.48 number of neutrino flavors. We also measured the muon pair cross section and determined the branching ratio Γ μμ = Γ h =0.056±0.006. The partial width of Z 0 →e + e − is Γ ee =88±9±7 MeV.
