Abstract

The Marine Ice Sheet–Ocean Model Intercomparison Project – phase 2 (MISOMIP2) is a natural progression of previous and ongoing model intercomparison exercises that have focused on the simulation of ice-sheet and ocean processes in Antarctica. The previous exercises motivate the move towards realistic configurations, as well as more diverse model parameters and resolutions. The main objective of MISOMIP2 is to investigate the performance of existing ocean and coupled ice-sheet–ocean models in a range of Antarctic environments through comparisons to observational data. We will assess the status of ice-sheet–ocean modelling as a community and identify common characteristics of models that are best able to capture observed features. As models are highly tuned based on present-day data, we will also compare their sensitivity to prescribed abrupt atmospheric perturbations leading to either very warm or slightly warmer ocean conditions compared to the present day. The approach of MISOMIP2 is to welcome contributions of models as they are, including global and regional configurations, but we request standardized variables and common grids for the outputs. We target the analysis at two specific regions, the Amundsen Sea and the Weddell Sea, since they describe two different ocean environments and have been relatively well observed compared to other areas of Antarctica. An observational “MIPkit” synthesizing existing ocean and ice-sheet observations for a common period is provided to evaluate ocean and ice-sheet models in these two regions.

Abstract

Background: Drastic changes such as school closures and stay-at-home measures due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, may have long-term negative effects on children's mental health; however, longitudinal studies after 2021 are limited. This study aimed to observe the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's mental health by exploring changes in their mental health over a period of 18 months. Study design: We conducted a longitudinal study at Chiba Prefecture in Japan, focusing on schoolchildren's mental health changes. Methods: Data were obtained from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) questionnaire conducted at single primary school three times from October 2021 to March 2023 which and included 183 participants. This study adopted a linear-mixed model to evaluate changes in children's SDQ scores, with sex and grade as the independent variables, and participants as a random effect. Results: Regarding changes in SDQ scores, there were no significant changes in the total difficulty scores or in each subscale; Emotional Symptoms, Conduct Problems, Hyperactivity/Inattention, Peer Problems, and Prosocial Behavior. There was no statistically significant interaction between changes in SDQ scores and sex. Conclusions: This report indicates that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of Japanese primary schoolchildren was negligible in the later phase of the pandemic. However, the impact may differ from country to country owing to factors such as social restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

A pulse shape difference between photons and neutrons was observed in the output signals of scintillation light from the un-doped CsI calorimeter of the KOTO experiment for the K L → π 0 ν ν decay. We developed a discrimination method to reject neutrons and to accept photons in the deposited energy range from 0.1 to 2 GeV. The method rejects 67% of neutron-induced single hadronic clusters and 86% of neutron-induced two-cluster events while keeping more than 90% of photon-induced single electromagnetic clusters and two-photon events.

Abstract

An electromagnetic calorimeter made of undoped CsI crystals is used in the J-PARC KOTO experiment to search for new physics beyond the standard model with the K L → π 0 ν ν decay. The calorimeter is designed to operate in vacuum of 0.1 Pa and in a high-rate environment where the counting rate due to K L decays is O ( 100 ) kHz. A special method to calibrate the calorimeter during the data taking without using a tracking system for charged particles is reported. The energy, position, and timing resolutions of the calorimeter were evaluated in several beam tests, and the resolutions satisfy the required performance. The energy resolution with the total energy E is 0 . 66 ⊕ 1 . 81 ∕ E [ GeV ] % in the inner region of the calorimeter.

Abstract

The performance of the CsI electromagnetic calorimeter to be used for the J-PARC E14 KOTO experiment for a rare decay K L → π 0 ν ν ¯ was studied by using a positron beam from an accelerator. The energy, timing, and position resolutions for energies up to 800 MeV were measured. We also developed a new method to reconstruct the incident angle of photons based on the shower shape recorded with the calorimeter, and evaluated the method to suppress possible backgrounds for K L → π 0 ν ν ¯ decay signals.

7. Ice‐Front Retreat Controls on Ocean Dynamics Under Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Abstract

Abstract Iceberg A‐68 separated from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in July 2017 and the impact of this event on the local ocean circulation has yet to be assessed. Here, we conduct numerical simulations of ocean dynamics near and below the ice shelf pre‐ and post‐calving. Results agree with in situ and remote observations of the area as they indicate that basal melt is primarily controlled by wintertime sea‐ice formation, which in turn produces High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW). After the calving event, we simulate a 50% increase in HSSW intrusion under the ice shelf, enhancing ocean heat delivery by 30%. This results in doubling of the melt rate under Gipps Ice Rise, suggesting a positive feedback for further retreat that could destabilize the Larsen C Ice Shelf. Assessing the impact of ice‐front retreat on the heat delivery under the ice is crucial to better understand ice‐shelf dynamics in a warming environment.

Abstract

The composition dependence of gravitational constant $G$ is measured at the millimeter scale to test the weak equivalence principle, which may be violated at short range through new Yukawa interactions such as the dilaton exchange force. A torsion balance on a turning table with two identical tungsten targets surrounded by two different attractor materials (copper and aluminum) is used to measure gravitational torque by means of digital measurements of a position sensor. Values of the ratios $\tilde{G}_{Al-W}/\tilde{G}_{Cu-W} -1$ and $\tilde{G}_{Cu-W}/G_{N} -1$ were $(0.9 \pm 1.1_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 4.8_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2}$ and $ (0.2 \pm 0.9_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 2.1_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2}$ , respectively; these were obtained at a center to center separation of 1.7 cm and surface to surface separation of 4.5 mm between target and attractor, which is consistent with the universality of $G$. A weak equivalence principle (WEP) violation parameter of $\eta_{Al-Cu}(r\sim 1\: \mathrm{cm})=(0.9 \pm 1.1_{\mathrm{sta}} \pm 4.9_{\mathrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-2} $ at the shortest range of around 1 cm was also obtained., Comment: submitted to Class. Abstract

The MTV (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation) experiment is running at TRIUMF-ISAC (Isotope Separator and ACcelerator), searching for a large T violation in polarized Li-8 beta decay via measurements of the triple vector correlation, R, in the beta decay rate function. The left/right backward scattering asymmetry of Mott scattering from a thin metal foil is measured using an electron tracking detector including a cylindrical drift chamber (CDC). To achieve 10-ppm precision in the Mott scattering asymmetry, we performed multiple studies on the expected systematic effects. The sources of the systematics have been identified and calibration systems have been developed to evaluate the fake effects. The first physics data was collected in 2016 and significantly improved on the result of our previous measurement, which achieved 100-ppm precision in 2010 using the first generation detector (planer drift chamber) at TRIUMF. The data measurement status, together with the results of the systematics studies, is described here. In addition to the T violation, we are preparing to test the Lorentz invariance in the weak sector via our Mott analyzer system. Unexplored Lorentz violating correlations can be tested using the MTV experimental setup. The testing principle and preparation status are also described here.

Abstract

The MTV experiment (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation Experiment) is running from 2009 at TRIUMF, which aims to search a large non-standard T-Violation in polarized nuclear beta decay. Existence of transverse polarization of electrons emitted from polarized 8Li nuclei, which are produced at TRIUMF-ISAC and stopped inside an aluminum stopper, is investigated. We utilize a Mott polarimeter consists of a planer drift chamber, measuring backward scattering left-right asymmetry from a thin lead analyzer foil. In this paper, preliminary results from the first physics run performed in 2010 are described.

Abstract

A new experiment named MTV-G, probing a large electron spin-precession due to a possible strong gravitational field, which predicted by large extra dimension model, is started at TRIUMF from 2011. In an electron-nuclear scattering experiment, a strong gravitational field is tested as a large spin precession effect caused by geodetic precession predicted by general relativity theory as a result of a warped space-time around nuclei. Experimental design using spin polarized electron source and Mott-spin analyzer, commissioning experiment and the preliminary results are described.

Abstract

Ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea are thinning rapidly as ocean currents bring warm water into the cavities beneath the floating ice. Although the reported melt rates for the Getz Ice Shelf are comparatively low for the region, its size makes it one of the largest freshwater sources around Antarctica, with potential consequences for, bottom water formation downstream, for example. Here, we use a 2-year-long novel mooring record (2016–2018) and 16-year-long regional model simulations to describe, for the first time, the hydrography and circulation in the vicinity of the ice front between Siple and Carney Island. We find that, throughout the mooring record, temperatures in the trough remain below 0.15 ∘C, more than 1 ∘C lower than in the neighboring Siple and Dotson Trough, and we observe a mean current (0.03 m s−1) directed toward the ice shelf front. The variability in the heat transport toward the ice shelf appears to be governed by nonlocal ocean surface stress over the Amundsen Sea Polynya region, and northward to the continental shelf break, where strengthened westward ocean surface stress leads to increased southward flow at the mooring site. The model simulations suggest that the heat content in the trough during the observed period was lower than normal, possibly owing to anomalously low summertime sea ice concentration and weak winds.

Abstract

The MTV (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation Experiment) experiment at TRIUMF-ISAC (Isotope Separator and ACcelerator), which aims to achieve the highest precision test of time reversal symmetry in polarized nuclear beta decay by measuring a triple correlation (R-correlation), is motivated by the search for a new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this experiment, the existence of non-zero transverse electron polarization is examined utilizing the analyzing power of Mott scattering from a thin metal foil. Backward scattering electron tracks are measured using a multi-wire drift chamber for the first time. The MTV experiment was commissioned at ISAC in 2009 using an 80%polarized 8Li beam at 107 pps, resulting in 0.1%statistical precision on the R-parameter in the first physics run performed in 2010. Next generation cylindrical drift chamber (CDC) is now being installed for the future run.

The MTV experiment (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation Experiment) is running at TRIUMF, to search for a large T-violating transverse electron-polarization in polarized 8Li β-decay. We aim at reaching precision of 10−4 for the R-correlation, which is defined as a T-violating triple vector correlation in the β-decay rate function. A Mott polarimeter system using a CDC (Cylindrical Drift Chamber) is used to measure the left-right scattering asymmetry in the Mott scattering from a thin metal foil. In the present study, we aim to discuss systematic effects in Mott polarimetry using the CDC.

Abstract

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

Abstract

We describe the K L 0 flux measurements performed at the J-PARC neutral-kaon beam line. This beam line was constructed for an experiment aiming to observe the CP-violating rare decay K L 0 → π 0 ν ν ¯ . The primary proton energy was 30 GeV and the K L 0 production angle was 16°. Prior to the physics run, the K L 0 flux and spectrum were measured by counting K L 0 → π + π − π 0 decays with a simple setup, which was composed of an electromagnetic calorimeter and a hodoscope system. Results from these measurements are presented and compared with various hadron-interaction simulations.

Abstract

A new FPGA based data acquisition (DAQ) and trigger combined system is developed for the MTV experiment (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation Experiment). The MTV experiment measures backward Mott scattering events by detecting the incident and scattered tracks using a drift chamber. For the backward scattering probability is as small as less than 0.1%, efficient triggering system is required to select the desired events. An intelligent Level-2 trigger system reading hitting pattern together with its digital readout system are built in a custom FPGA system. In this paper, design overview and results from performance tests are described.

Abstract

The KOTO ($K^0$ at Tokai) experiment aims to observe the CP-violating rare decay $K_L \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$ by using a long-lived neutral-kaon beam produced by the 30 GeV proton beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. The $K_L$ flux is an essential parameter for the measurement of the branching fraction. Three $K_L$ neutral decay modes, $K_L \rightarrow 3\pi^0$, $K_L \rightarrow 2\pi^0$, and $K_L \rightarrow 2\gamma$ were used to measure the $K_L$ flux in the beam line in the 2013 KOTO engineering run. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the detector acceptance for these decays. Agreement was found between the simulation model and the experimental data, and the remaining systematic uncertainty was estimated at the 1.4\% level. The $K_L$ flux was measured as $(4.183 \pm 0.017_{\mathrm{stat.}} \pm 0.059_{\mathrm{sys.}}) \times 10^7$ $K_L$ per $2\times 10^{14}$ protons on a 66-mm-long Au target., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The hydrogenated amorphous carbon films (α-C:H) were deposited on p-type Si (100) substrates at different thicknesses by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique (rf-PECVD). Raman spectra display asymmetric diamond-like carbon (DLC) peaks, representative of the α-C:H films. The decrease of intensity ID/IG ratios revealed the sp3 content arise at different thicknesses of the α-C:H films. In terms of mechanical properties, the high hardness and elastic modulus values showed the elastic and plastic deformation behaviors related to sp3 content in amorphous carbon films. Electrochemical properties showed that the α-C:H films exhibited excellent corrosion resistance in air-saturated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for pH 2 at room temperature. Thickness increasing affected the small sp2 clusters in matrix, restricting the velocity transfer and exchange of electrons. Abstract

The Mott polarimetry for T-violation (MTV) experiment tests time-reversal symmetry in polarized nuclear [Formula: see text]-decay by measuring an electron’s transverse polarization as a form of angular asymmetry in Mott scattering using a thin metal foil. A Mott scattering analyzer system developed using a tracking detector to measure scattering angles offers better event selectivity than conventional counter experiments. In this paper, we describe a pilot experiment conducted at KEK-TRIAC using a prototype system with a polarized 8Li beam. The experiment confirmed the sound performance of our Mott analyzer system to measure T-violating triple correlation (R correlation), and therefore recommends its use in higher-precision experiments at the TRIUMF-ISAC.

23. A Volume‐Conserved Approach to Estimating Sea‐Ice Production in Antarctic Polynyas

Abstract

Abstract Accurate estimation of sea‐ice production (SIP) is crucial to understanding the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). Existing SIP estimates depend on the heat‐budget method, using atmospheric reanalysis together with satellite‐derived sea‐ice thickness data, and make an unrealistic assumption of no ocean heat flux occurring below the ice. Here, we propose a new method to estimate SIP based on the sea‐ice volume‐conservation (VC) theory. This new method can consider cases with sea‐ice melting (negative SIP). For a latent‐heat polynya—the Ross Sea Polynya—this method captures the synoptic SIP variations affected by warm‐water intrusions, including small‐scale melting and freezing patterns. Using the new VC approach for a sensible‐heat polynya, the Maud Rise Polynya, the sub‐sea‐ice oceanic heat flux was indirectly estimated, and the sea‐ice melting rate induced by warm water uplifted by Ekman pumping was estimated to be 0.15 and 1.44 cm d−1 for 2016 and 2017, respectively.

T The MTV (Mott polarimetry for T-Violation) experiment at TRIUMF aims to search a large T-violation in nuclear beta decay outside of the Standard Model. The T-violating transverse polarization of the emitted electrons is measured as left-right scattering asymmetry in backward scattering event by a thin metal foil. The present experiment requires high statistical and systematic precision. In order to achieve a high statistical precision, a high speed-triggering and DAQ system is required. To satisfy the requirements, the FPGA-based Trigger/DAQ system has been developed by the general purpose VME board. The details of the system and performance test results will be reported in this paper.

Abstract

The MTV-G (MTV-Gravity) experiment is aiming to detect a strong gravitational field at around nuclear scale, utilizing an electron polarimeter of the MTV (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation) experiment [1], which is searching a large T-Violating electron transverse polarization emitted in polarized Li-8 beta decay. The MTV experiment is running at TRIUMF-ISAC since 2009, yielding the highest precision test of T-Violation. The extreme sensitivity of the MTV polarimeter gives us an opportunity to perform a new type of gravity experiment. A modification of gravitational inverse square law at a microscopic scale is predicted by a large extra-dimension model in order to explain the hierarchy problem. The strong gravitational field can be detected as a large spin precession of electrons scattered from nuclei, caused by the “Geodetic precession” as a result of a warped space-time around the nuclear mass. In this experiment, longitudinal polarization of electrons emitted from a 90 Sr source is transferred into a transverse polarization via electromagnetic Thomas precession and possibly via the Geodetic precession.

th , 2013) The MTV (Mott polarimetry for T-Violation) experiment is running from 2009 at TRIUMF, which aims to search a large non-standard T-Violation in polarized nuclear beta decay. Existence of a large transverse polarization of electrons emitted from polarized Li-8 nuclei, which are produced at TRIUMF-ISAC and stopped inside an aluminum stopper, is investigated. We utilize a Mott polarimeter consists of a CDC (Cylindrical Drift Chamber), measuring backward scattering left-right asymmetry from a thin lead analyzer foil. In this paper, results from the final performance test run using CDC performed in 2012 are described.

Abstract

The MTV-G project was started in 2011 to explore a strong gravitational field at a nuclear scale in an electron double scattering experiment, utilizing an experimental technique of the MTV experiment, which searches a electron’s T-Violating transverse polarization in nuclear beta decay at TRIUMF-ISAC. In addition to this new experiment, we have also performed a re-analysis of spectroscopic data of exotic atoms, in a gravitational point of view. From these two studies, we set new constraints on possible new Yukawa interaction at sub-mm scale, as a test of gravitational inverse square law.

Abstract

Motivated by a search for a new physics beyond the standard model, the MTV experiment (Mott Polarimetry for T-Violation Experiment) is intended to achieve the highest precision test of time-reversal symmetry in polarized nuclear beta decay by measuring a triple correlation (the R -correlation). The first physics run of the MTV experiment was performed in 2010 at TRIUMF-ISAC. This paper gives preliminary results and describes the next generation setup, which involves a cylindrical drift chamber.

Abstract

Contrary to the great possibilities of photonic crystal (PC), a practical laser diode with a PC cavity has not yet been developed. This is mainly due to the lack of electrically driven devices; Since a two-dimensional PC slab cladded by air is often employed to realize strong light confinement, it is difficult to inject carriers into a cavity in such an air-bridge structure. An electrically driven laser using a tiny semiconductor pillar for current injection has been reported; however, a large cross-section of the pillar (or low electrical resistance) trades-off a large Q-factor sufficient for lasing. In this letter, we propose a novel design of PC laser diode in which light confinement and carrier injection are highly compatible.

Abstract

To clarify the mechanism by which lactate affects insulin secretion, we investigated the effect of lactate on insulin secretion, cytosolic free Ca2+ ([Ca2+](i), the ATP sensitive K+ channel (K(ATP)) and the Ca2+-activated K+ channel (K(Ca)) in HIT-T15 cells, and the results were compared with those of glucose and glibenclamide. All three agents caused insulin secretion and increased [Ca2+](i), but the effects on the K+ channels were different. In cell-attached patch configurations, 10 mmol/l glucose blocked both the K(ATP) and KCa channels, while 100 nmol/l glibenclamide had no effect on KCa channels, but blocked K(ATP) channels. Lactate at a concentration of 10 mmol/l activated both the K(ATP) and KCa channels, not only in cell-attached, but also in inside-out patch configurations, indicating that the increase in [Ca2+](i) and secretion of insulin by lactate cannot be explained by the blocking of the K+ channels. Lactate, at concentrations of 10 mmol/l and 50 mmol/l decreased 45Ca2+ efflux, while glibenclamide increased the efflux. These results suggest that the lactate-induced Ca2+ increase is not due to the closing of K+ channels, but at least in part, to the suppression of Ca2+ efflux from HIT cells.

34. Selective conversion of big endothelins to tracheal smooth muscle-constricting 31-amino acid-length endothelins by chymase from human mast cells

Abstract

Chymase from human mast cells selectively cleaved big endothelins (ETs) at the Tyr31-Gly32 bond and produced novel trachea-constricting 31-amino acid-length endothelins, ETs(1-31), without any further degradation products. Chymases from other species, such as the enzymes from rat connective tissue and mucosal mast cells, and the other chymotrypsin-like proteases examined degraded big ETs. ETs(1-31) exhibited various contractile potencies as to the rat trachea in comparison with 21-amino acid-length endothelins, ETs(1-21), and big ETs: ET-1(1-21) > ET-1(1-31) > big ET-1; ET-2(1-31) > ET-2(1-21) > or = big ET-2; ET-3(1-21) > or = ET-3(1-31) > or = big ET-3. Among the ETs(1-31), ET-2(1-31) was the most potent constrictor, its potency being similar to that of ET-1(1-21) and stronger than that of ET-2(1-21). The contractile activity of ETs(1-31) may not be the consequence of conversion to the corresponding ETs(1-21) by phosphoramidon-sensitive ET-converting enzymes or other chymotrypsin-type proteases and metalloendopeptidases, because the contractile activity was not inhibited significantly on treatment with inhibitors of these proteases before the addition of ET-1(1-31). Inhibitors of chymotrypsin-type serine proteases, on the contrary, significantly enhanced the contractile activity exhibited by ET-1(1-31) and big ET-1, but not that by ET-1(1-21). These results suggest that protease(s) on the surface of the rat trachea tends to degrade ETs(1-31) and big ETs, and thereby reduces their contractile activity. Taken together, the results suggest that trachea-constricting ETs(1-31) generated by human chymase may play a role in the hyper-responsive airway in allergic inflammation.

36. Development of adjoint-based ocean state estimation for the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas and ice shelf cavities using MITgcm–ECCO (66j)

Abstract

The Antarctic coastal ocean impacts sea level rise, deep-ocean circulation, marine ecosystems, and the global carbon cycle. To better describe and understand these processes and their variability, it is necessary to combine the sparse available observations with the best-possible numerical descriptions of ocean circulation. In particular, high ice shelf melting rates in the Amundsen Sea have attracted many observational campaigns, and we now have some limited oceanographic data that capture seasonal and interannual variability during the past decade. One method to combine observations with numerical models that can maximize the information extracted from the sparse observations is the adjoint method, a.k.a. 4D-Var (4-dimensional variational assimilation), as developed and implemented for global ocean state estimation by the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) project. Here, for the first time, we apply the adjoint-model estimation method to a regional configuration of the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas, Antarctica, including explicit representation of sub-ice-shelf cavities. We utilize observations available during 2010–2014, including ship-based and seal-tagged CTD measurements, moorings, and satellite sea-ice concentration estimates. After 20 iterations of the adjoint-method minimization algorithm, the cost function, here defined as a sum of the weighted model–data difference, is reduced by 65 % relative to the baseline simulation by adjusting initial conditions, atmospheric forcing, and vertical diffusivity. The sea-ice and ocean components of the cost function are reduced by 59 % and 70 %, respectively. Major improvements include better representations of (1) Winter Water (WW) characteristics and (2) intrusions of modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW) towards the Pine Island Glacier. Sensitivity experiments show that ∼40 % and ∼10 % of improvements in sea ice and ocean state, respectively, can be attributed to the adjustment of air temperature and wind. This study is a preliminary demonstration of adjoint-method optimization with explicit representation of ice shelf cavity circulation. Despite the 65 % cost reduction, substantial model–data discrepancies remain, in particular with annual and interannual variability observed by moorings in front of the Pine Island Ice Shelf. We list a series of possible causes for these residuals, including limitations of the model, the optimization methodology, and observational sampling. In particular, we hypothesize that residuals could be further reduced if the model could more accurately represent sea-ice concentration and coastal polynyas.

Abstract

Given the small bit allocation for motion information in very low bit-rate coding, motion compensation using the block matching (BMA) algorithm fails to maintain an acceptable level of prediction errors. The reason is that the motion model, or spatial transformation, assumed in block matching cannot approximate the motion in the real world precisely with a small number of parameters (i.e. motion vectors). To develop an effective motion compensation method for very low bit-rate video coding, The authors address the issues of 1) adopting more sophisticated spatial transformations than block matching, and 2) developing a motion estimation algorithm that is suitable for these spatial transformations. The spatial transformations discussed are affine transformation, bilinear transformation and perspective transformation. Two new motion estimation algorithms, a matching-based algorithm and its fast version, are presented. The performance of the motion compensation methods, which combine the spatial transformations and the proposed motion estimation algorithms, is evaluated theoretically and experimentally using the following criteria: prediction error, amount of motion information, and computational cost. The simulation results show that in the proposed method, the amount of motion information required to achieve a fixed level of prediction error is reduced to one fourth that of block matching. The authors combine the designed motion compensation method with the discrete cosine transform to simulate coding of CIF format images at the transmission rate of 16 kb/s. >

Abstract

The effects of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase on ATP-sensitive K + channels in cultured smooth muscle cells of the porcine coronary artery were investigated using the patch-clamp technique. Extracellular application of isoproterenol (1mM), a beta agonist, or forskolin (2×10 −5 M), an activator of adenylate cyclase, activated these channels in cell-attached patch configurations, which were not blocked by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (10 −6 M), an activator of protein kinase C. Cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activated these channels in inside-out patch configurations. These results suggest that cyclic AMP-dependent phosphorylatlon modulates ATPsensitive K + channels, in addition to its well known effects on Ca 2+ -activated K + channels. The activation of ATP-sensltive K + channels by cyclic AMP-dependent phosphorylation contributes to hyperpolarizatlon of the membrane and to the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells.

We studied neutrophil functions (phagocytosis, intracellular killing and chemotaxis with or without recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) and T cell functions (lymphocyte proliferation and production of GM-CSF in response to phytohemagglutin (PHA)) to clarify host defense mechanisms in the elderly. There was no significant difference in phagocytic activity of neutrophils between the elderly and control young adults. rhGM-CSF enhanced phagocytosis by neutrophils, and a similar degree of enhancement was obtained in both groups. Killing activity of neutrophils evaluated by the new Nitroblue tetrazolium reduction test in the elderly was significantly lower than that in young adults (p < 0.001), however, pretreatment of neutrophils with rhGM-CSF resulted in an increase of killing activity in the elderly, raising their response to a level comparable to that of young adults pretreated with rhGM-CSF. There was no significant difference between the elderly and young adults in chemotaxis of neutrophils. rhGM-CSF alone did not prime chemotaxis, but primed chemotaxis in response to chemoattractant (N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanin) in both individuals. Lymphocyte proliferation and production of GM-CSF in response to PHA in the elderly were significantly lower than those in the young adults (p < 0.001, p < 0.05, respectively). These results indicated that impaired T cell functions may contribute, at least in part, to susceptibility to bacterial infection in the elderly.

Abstract

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is closely related to myocardial sympathetic nerve function. This study evaluated the presence of impaired myocardial sympathetic nerve function by Iodine-123-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy in ten patients with MVP. For comparison, 15 healthy subjects without heart disease were investigated (control group). Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and anterior planar myocardial scintigraphy were performed 15 min (initial images) and 3 hours (delayed images) after injection of MIBG (111 MBq). The location and degrees of reduced tracer uptake were evaluated. Myocardial MIBG uptake was quantified by uptake ratio of the heart (H) to upper mediastinum (M) on the anterior planar images (H/M). Percentage washout of MIBG in nine sectors of all oblique slices along the short-axis was calculated. The washout rates were higher at the inferoposterior and septal segments in patients with anterior leaflet prolapse, and at inferoposterior and lateral segments in patients with posterior leaflet prolapse. The bull's eye map showed increased washout rate in the apical and posteroseptal basal segments. There was no significant difference in the H/M ratio between MVP patients and the control group. These results indicate that MIBG can be used to evaluate localized myocardial sympathetic nerve function in MVP.

Abstract

To evaluate the ability of high-energy ultraviolet A (UVA) light-emitting diode (LED) to inactivate bacteria in water and investigate the inactivating mechanism of UVA irradiation.We developed a new disinfection device equipped with high-energy UVA-LED. Inactivation of bacteria was determined by colony-forming assay. Vibrio parahaemolyticus, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli DH5alpha were reduced by greater than 5-log(10) stages within 75 min at 315 J cm(-2) of UVA. Salmonella enteritidis was reduced greater than 4-log(10) stages within 160 min at 672 J cm(-2) of UVA. The formation of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in UVA-LED irradiated bacteria was 2.6-fold higher than that of UVC-irradiated bacteria at the same inactivation level. Addition of mannitol, a scavenger of hydroxyl radicals (OH(*)), or catalase, an enzyme scavenging hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) to bacterial suspensions significantly suppressed disinfection effect of UVA-LED.This disinfection system has enough ability to inactivate bacteria and OH(*) and H(2)O(2) participates in the disinfection mechanism of UVA irradiation.We newly developed UVA irradiation system and found that UVA alone was able to disinfect the water efficiently. This will become a useful disinfection system.

Abstract

This paper proposes a receive antenna selection method for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) switches and polarization antennas at receiver side, taking into consideration low computational complexity. The proposed method selects a suitable set of polarization antennas which gives lower correlation between received signals, larger received signal power and higher signal- to-interference-plus-noise power ratio (SINR), therefore, achieves a lower bit error rate (BER). We use measured channel data to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and show that the it works effectively for the realistic channel.

Abstract

This paper describes a real-time performance evaluation of a receive antenna selection method for a spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in a real environment. In this real-time performance evaluation, we employed a receive antenna selection method to select a suitable set of polarization antennas at the receiver side of the MIMO-OFDM system with low computational complexity. The receiver of the MIMO-OFDM system caught the preambles of the signal bursts to calculate the channel impulse responses and used them in calculating a cost function to decide a suitable set of polarization antennas. The results showed that the MIMO- OFDM system with the receive antenna selection method selected suitable sets of polarization antennas and achieved good performance.

Abstract

A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses antenna selection schemes at receiver enables us to reduce radio frequency (RF) chains and provide a gain enhancement. That means low-cost and better performance can be obtained compared to a conventional MIMO system. In this paper, we present measured capacity and bit error rate (BER) performance evaluation of an indoor office MIMO system using a receive antenna selection at 5 GHz band. It is found that an ideal selection improves approximately 4 dB in a 2 times 2 MIMO system from a result of a cumulative distribution function versus the gain enhancement. Furthermore, the ideal selection for maximizing the measured capacity and minimizing the BER performance is not always the same due to a noise enhancement which depends on a condition number or a correlation of MIMO channel matrix. Note that an antenna selecting criterion between a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and MIMO systems is different. In the former case, the criterion is based on an SNR or a signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) even if the forward error correction (FEC) techniques are used, while the criterion for the latter is not always the SNR nor the SINR

Abstract

Performance of a multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) system is largely degraded when it is equipped in mobile terminals or placed near a human body because radio waves are absorbed or shielded by the human body. This paper evaluates an antenna selection-based MIMO system under environments near human body. Each MIMO antenna branch at the receiver of the proposed MIMO system is equipped with several antennas, which have different characteristics such as polarizations and directional patterns, and the receiver selects one of them by radio frequency (RF) switches. A 2times2 MIMO propagation measurement at an indoor environment with the proposed antenna is conducted, and channel capacities and bit error rates (BERs) are evaluated by computer simulations with the measured channel data. From the results, the channel capacity is improved by more than 1.5 bit/sec/Hz when the proposed antenna is used near a human body. In addition, from the BER simulations that assume OFDM transmission IEEE802.11n, it is found that the received power is improved by more than 5 dB at cumulative distribution function (CDF) value of 0.5.

Abstract

This paper proposes a hybrid RF-analog/digital approach for terminal-side array antenna systems, where lower power consumption is required. Assuming an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless local area network standard, the bit error rate (BER) performance of two types of array antenna is discussed, such as an adaptive array antenna and a phased array antenna and the trade off is shown between the attainable BER performance and the number of control parameters. Furthermore, analog device-specific effects are also discussed such as phase shift error and phase resolution required.
