Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric muon neutrinos are produced by meson decays in cosmic-ray-induced air showers. The flux depends on meteorological quantities such as the air temperature, which affects the density of air. Competition between decay and re-interaction of those mesons in the first particle production generations gives rise to a higher neutrino flux when the air density in the stratosphere is lower, corresponding to a higher temperature. A measurement of a temperature dependence of the atmospheric $$\nu _{\mu }$$ ν μ flux provides a novel method for constraining hadronic interaction models of air showers. It is particularly sensitive to the production of kaons. Studying this temperature dependence for the first time requires a large sample of high-energy neutrinos as well as a detailed understanding of atmospheric properties. We report the significant ( $$> 10 \; \sigma $$ > 10 σ ) observation of a correlation between the rate of more than 260,000 neutrinos, detected by IceCube between 2012 and 2018, and atmospheric temperatures of the stratosphere, measured by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA’s AQUA satellite. For the observed 10 $$\%$$ % seasonal change of effective atmospheric temperature we measure a 3.5(3) $$\%$$ % change in the muon neutrino flux. This observed correlation deviates by about 2-3 standard deviations from the expected correlation of 4.3 $$\%$$ % as obtained from theoretical predictions under the assumption of various hadronic interaction models.

Abstract: Neutrino flares in the sky are searched for in data collected by IceCube between 2011 and 2021 May. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube’s previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data set is statistically independent of the track data sets, and while inferior in angular resolution, the low-background nature makes it competitive and complementary to previous searches. No statistically significant flare of neutrino emission was observed in an all-sky scan. Upper limits are calculated on neutrino flares of varying duration from 1 hr to 100 days. Furthermore, constraints on the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux are presented, showing that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p -value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p -value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 yr of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events + high-energy tracks) has an average probability of ≥0.5 of being of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events’ error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056, with a local significance of 3 σ , which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p -value is 0.156 and compatible with the background hypothesis. We constrain the total continuous flux emitted from all 122 test positions at 100 TeV to be below 1.2 × 10 ^−15 (TeV cm ^2 s) ^−1 at 90% confidence assuming an E ^−2 spectrum. This corresponds to 4.5% of IceCube’s astrophysical diffuse flux. Overall, we find no indication that alert events in general are linked to lower-energetic continuous or transient neutrino emission.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been continuously taking data to search for ${ \mathcal O }(0.5\mbox{--}10)$ s long neutrino bursts since 2007. Even if a Galactic core-collapse supernova is optically obscured or collapses to a black hole instead of exploding, it will be detectable via the ${ \mathcal O }(10)$ MeV neutrino burst emitted during the collapse. We discuss a search for such events covering the time between 2008 April 17 and 2019 December 31. Considering the average data taking and analysis uptime of 91.7% after all selection cuts, this is equivalent to 10.735 yr of continuous data taking. In order to test the most conservative neutrino production scenario, the selection cuts were optimized for a model based on an 8.8 solar mass progenitor collapsing to an O–Ne–Mg core. Conservative assumptions on the effects of neutrino oscillations in the exploding star were made. The final selection cut was set to ensure that the probability to detect such a supernova within the Milky Way exceeds 99%. No such neutrino burst was found in the data after performing a blind analysis. Hence, a 90% C.L. upper limit on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to distances of ≈25 kpc was determined to be 0.23 yr ^−1 . For the more distant Magellanic Clouds, only high neutrino luminosity supernovae will be detectable by IceCube, unless external information on the burst time is available. We determined a model-independent limit by parameterizing the dependence on the neutrino luminosity and the energy spectrum.

Abstract: Core-collapse supernovae are a promising potential high-energy neutrino source class. We test for correlation between seven years of IceCube neutrino data and a catalog containing more than 1000 core-collapse supernovae of types IIn and IIP and a sample of stripped-envelope supernovae. We search both for neutrino emission from individual supernovae as well as for combined emission from the whole supernova sample, through a stacking analysis. No significant spatial or temporal correlation of neutrinos with the cataloged supernovae was found. All scenarios were tested against the background expectation and together yield an overall p -value of 93%; therefore, they show consistency with the background only. The derived upper limits on the total energy emitted in neutrinos are 1.7 × 10 ^48 erg for stripped-envelope supernovae, 2.8 × 10 ^48 erg for type IIP, and 1.3 × 10 ^49 erg for type IIn SNe, the latter disfavoring models with optimistic assumptions for neutrino production in interacting supernovae. We conclude that stripped-envelope supernovae and supernovae of type IIn do not contribute more than 14.6% and 33.9%, respectively, to the diffuse neutrino flux in the energy range of about [ 10 ^3 –10 ^5 ] GeV, assuming that the neutrino energy spectrum follows a power-law with an index of −2.5. Under the same assumption, we can only constrain the contribution of type IIP SNe to no more than 59.9%. Thus, core-collapse supernovae of types IIn and stripped-envelope supernovae can both be ruled out as the dominant source of the diffuse neutrino flux under the given assumptions.

Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been considered a possible source of high-energy neutrinos. While no correlations have yet been detected between high-energy neutrinos and GRBs, the recent observation of GRB 221009A—the brightest GRB observed by Fermi-GBM to date and the first one to be observed above an energy of 10 TeV—provides a unique opportunity to test for hadronic emission. In this paper, we leverage the wide energy range of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A. We find no significant deviation from background expectation across event samples ranging from MeV to PeV energies, placing stringent upper limits on the neutrino emission from this source.

Abstract: We present a catalog of likely astrophysical neutrino track-like events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. IceCube began reporting likely astrophysical neutrinos in 2016, and this system was updated in 2019. The catalog presented here includes events that were reported in real time since 2019, as well as events identified in archival data samples starting from 2011. We report 275 neutrino events from two selection channels as the first entries in the catalog, the IceCube Event Catalog of Alert Tracks, which will see ongoing extensions with additional alerts. The Gold and Bronze alert channels respectively provide neutrino candidates with a 50% and 30% probability of being astrophysical, on average assuming an astrophysical neutrino power-law energy spectral index of 2.19. For each neutrino alert, we provide the reconstructed energy, direction, false-alarm rate, probability of being astrophysical in origin, and likelihood contours describing the spatial uncertainty in the alert's reconstructed location. We also investigate a directional correlation of these neutrino events with gamma-ray and X-ray catalogs, including 4FGL, 3HWC, TeVCat, and Swift-BAT.

Abstract: The LIGO/Virgo collaboration published the catalogs GWTC-1, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3 containing candidate gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during its runs O1, O2, and O3. These GW events can be possible sites of neutrino emission. In this paper, we present a search for neutrino counterparts of 90 GW candidates using IceCube DeepCore, the low-energy infill array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The search is conducted using an unbinned maximum likelihood method, within a time window of 1000 s, and uses the spatial and timing information from the GW events. The neutrinos used for the search have energies ranging from a few GeV to several tens of TeV. We do not find any significant emission of neutrinos, and place upper limits on the flux and the isotropic-equivalent energy emitted in low-energy neutrinos. We also conduct a binomial test to search for source populations potentially contributing to neutrino emission. We report a nondetection of a significant neutrino-source population with this test.

Abstract: The Galactic plane, harboring a diffuse neutrino flux, is a particularly interesting target in which to study potential cosmic-ray acceleration sites. Recent gamma-ray observations by HAWC and LHAASO have presented evidence for multiple Galactic sources that exhibit a spatially extended morphology and have energy spectra continuing beyond 100 TeV. A fraction of such emission could be produced by interactions of accelerated hadronic cosmic rays, resulting in an excess of high-energy neutrinos clustered near these regions. Using 10 years of IceCube data comprising track-like events that originate from charged-current muon neutrino interactions, we perform a dedicated search for extended neutrino sources in the Galaxy. We find no evidence for time-integrated neutrino emission from the potential extended sources studied in the Galactic plane. The most significant location, at 2.6 σ post-trials, is a 1.°7 sized region coincident with the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source 3HWC J1951+266. We provide strong constraints on hadronic emission from several regions in the galaxy.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory sends realtime neutrino alerts with a high probability of being astrophysical in origin. We present a new method to correlate these events and possible candidate sources using 2089 blazars from the Fermi-LAT 4LAC-DR2 catalog and with 3413 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the Radio Fundamental Catalog. Abstract: The understanding of novae, the thermonuclear eruptions on the surfaces of white dwarf stars in binaries, has recently undergone a major paradigm shift. Though the bolometric luminosity of novae was long thought to arise directly from photons supplied by the thermonuclear runaway, recent gigaelectronvolt (GeV) gamma-ray observations have supported the notion that a significant portion of the luminosity could come from radiative shocks. More recently, observations of novae have lent evidence that these shocks are acceleration sites for hadrons for at least some types of novae. In this scenario, a flux of neutrinos may accompany the observed gamma rays. As the gamma rays from most novae have only been observed up to a few GeV, novae have previously not been considered as targets for neutrino telescopes, which are most sensitive at and above teraelectronvolt (TeV) energies. Here, we present the first search for neutrinos from novae with energies between a few GeV and 10 TeV using IceCube-DeepCore, a densely instrumented region of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory with a reduced energy threshold. We search both for a correlation between gamma-ray and neutrino emission as well as between optical and neutrino emission from novae. We find no evidence for neutrino emission from the novae considered in this analysis and set upper limits for all gamma-ray detected novae.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a search for neutrinos that are spatially and temporally coincident with 22 unique, nonrepeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) and one repeating FRB (FRB 121102). FRBs are a rapidly growing class of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysical objects that are considered a potential source of high-energy neutrinos. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory’s previous FRB analyses have solely used track events. This search utilizes seven years of IceCube cascade events which are statistically independent of track events. This event selection allows probing of a longer range of extended timescales due to the low background rate. No statistically significant clustering of neutrinos was observed. Upper limits are set on the time-integrated neutrino flux emitted by FRBs for a range of extended time windows.

19. Structure–behaviour correlations between two genetically closely related snail species

Abstract: Species, through their structure and composition, have evolved to respond to environmental constraints. Predator–prey interactions are among environmental pressures that can lead to speciation, but it remains unclear how this pressure can be related to the material structure and performance. Recently, two land snails, Karaftohelix editha and Karaftohelix gainesi, were found to exhibit divergent phenotypes and responses to predation despite sharing the same habitat and most of their genome. Indeed, under attack from a beetle, K. editha snails retract into their shell whereas K. gainesi snails swing their shell. In this paper, we looked at the microstructure, composition, morphology and mechanics of the shells of those two species and discuss potential relationships between material structure and the snail defence behaviour. The results of this study provide additional arguments for the role of predator–prey interactions on speciation, as well as an unusual approach for the design of biomimetic structures adapted to a particular function.

Abstract: The northern East China Sea (ECS) serves as a spawning and nursery ground for many species of fish and squid. To clarify the basis of the food web in the northern ECS, we examined the nitrate (NO3) dynamics along four latitudinal transects based on stable nitrogen and oxygen isotopes of NO3 (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) and temperature–salinity dynamics in both winter (February 2009) and summer (July 2009 and July 2011). The δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3, which were distinctly different among the potential NO3 sources, were useful for clarifying NO3 sources and its actual usage by phytoplankton. In winter, Kuroshio Subsurface Water (KSSW) and the Yellow Sea Mixed Water (YSMW) predominantly contributed to NO3 distributed in the shelf water. In the surface water of the Okinawa Trough, NO3 from the KSSW, along with a temperature increase caused by an intrusion of Kuroshio Surface Water (KSW), seemed to stimulate phytoplankton growth. In summer, Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW), Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM), and KSSW affected the distribution and abundance of NO3 in the northern ECS, depending on precipitation in the Changjiang drainage basin and the development of the YSCWM in the shelf bottom water. Although isotopic fractionation during NO3 uptake by phytoplankton seemed to drastically increase δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3 in summer, relatively light nitrate with δ15NNO3 lower than expected from this fractionation effect might be explained by contribution of atmospheric nitrogen and/or nitrification to NO3 dynamics in the surface and subsurface layers. If the latter were a dominant process, this would imply a tightly coupled nitrogen cycle in the shelf water of the northern ECS.

Abstract: Panitumumab, a therapeutic agent for unresectable advanced/recurrent colorectal cancer, is a human IgG2 monoclonal antibody that binds to and inhibits the activity of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). The onset of hypomagnesemia is a known side effect of anti-EGFR inhibitors, including panitumumab, and it is thought that inhibition of reabsorption of Mg in renal tubules is one of the causes. In addition, recent reports have shown that long-term administration of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduces serum magnesium levels. Therefore, in this study, 102 patients who received oral PPIs treated with panitumumab were classified into a PPI combination group and a PPI non-combination group, and the effect of PPIs on the development of grade 2 or higher hypomagnesemia was investigated. The incidence of hypomagnesemia in the PPI combination group (46.9%, 15/32) was higher than that in the PPI non-combination group (25.7%, 18/70). A comparison of the backgrounds of the two groups of patients showed a significant difference in serum albumin levels. PPI administration was significantly associated with panitumumab-induced hypomagnesemia development when adjusted for known risk factors, serum albumin level, renal function, and oral magnesium oxide tablets in Cox proportional hazards regression analysis (hazard ratio 2.09; 95% confidence interval 1.03-4.22

Abstract: The Martian atmosphere, which mainly consists of carbon dioxide (CO2), is characterized by extremely low temperatures that cause CO2 gas to freeze and dry ice to form. To date, temperatures below the CO2 saturation temperature, which can be attributed to the effects of atmospheric waves, have been observed in the polar winter and in the mesosphere. Using data from Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) radio occultation measurements, we investigated the role of large-scale atmospheric waves including stationary and transient waves at northern high latitudes in winter on CO2 supersaturation. A distinct longitudinal dependence of CO2 supersaturation was observed at altitudes higher than the pressure level of 200–400 Pa, where a stationary wave with a wave number of 2, whose temperature amplitude had minima at 30–100 Pa, lowered the background temperature to a level close to the CO2 saturation temperature. However, the stationary wave alone was not sufficient to cause CO2 supersaturation. Additional temperature disturbances caused by transient waves, namely, superposition of both waves, had a significant role in CO2 supersaturation. The longitudinal dependence of the occurrence of CO2 supersaturation revealed by our study might affect the longitudinal distribution of CO2 snowfall and the formation of the seasonal polar ice cap.

Abstract: The hybrid magnetic bearing using permanent magnets and the high-Tc bulk superconductor (HTSC) has been developed. Repulsive force of the permanent magnet is introduced to increase the load weight of the magnetic bearing. Effect of the hybrid system has been shown. In this paper, influence of the hybrid system on the dynamic characteristics of the rotor is studied. The rotational characteristics in the mechanical resonance state are studied, and the equivalent magnetic spring coefficient is estimated from the experimental results of the load weight. The resonance frequency is measured by the rotation experiments. The rotor achieves stable levitation even in the resonance state. In the hybrid system, effect of the pinning force becomes smaller than that of the lateral force generated by the repulsive force between the two permanent magnets at the smaller air gap. Thus influence of the lateral vibration and the gradient angle in the resonance state becomes larger at a smaller air gap. The equivalent magnetic spring coefficient becomes also small, and the resonance frequency becomes small in the hybrid bearing system.

Abstract: We present archival and Jansky Very Large Array multi-frequency multi-array radio continuum imaging of a unique sample of 100 radio sources that have been selected to be candidate "X-shaped" radio galaxies (XRGs). The archival data were calibrated in AIPS and imaged using DIFMAP, while the new Very Large Array data were calibrated and imaged in CASA. No attempt was made to re-image the archival data in CASA. Altogether we present images of 95 of the 100 sources. These observations give us the opportunity to study radio sources with synchrotron plasma that is significantly offset from the main radio axis and therefore to open a window into investigations of physical mechanisms responsible for depositing the plasma in off-axis regions. Here, we present the technical details of the observations and all of the total intensity images, while in subsequent papers we use them to examine critically various models for the formation of XRGs. Spectral index and linear polarization information is also presented and analyzed in further papers in this series.

Abstract: Strength anisotropy is found by tensile and compressive tests for a drawn pearlite steel wire, where the compressive tests are performed for prepared specimens along directions of 0, 45 and 90 degrees with respect to the drawing direction. The influence of annealing on such anisotropic strength is also examined. To make clear the origin of the strength anisotropy, texture and residual strain are measured using neutron diffraction. It is revealed that residual stresses in the ferrite and cementite phases are the cause of strength anisotropy.

Abstract: Neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements were carried out on both powder and single crystal samples of La 0.875 Ca 0.125 MnO 3 . At room temperature (RT), this sample is paramagnetic and single phase, with crystallographic symmetry Pnma (the longest axis is b-axis). Neutron powder diffraction shows that the average magnetic moment of Mn ions is 3.0 (1) μ B / Mn at 10 K, which is significantly less than an averaged moment estimated from the ratio of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ which amounts to 3.875 μ B for 12.5% Mn 4+ , an indication of spin canting. The crystal structure is characterized by the ordering of two eg orbitals, being evidenced by the anomalous change of Mn-O bond lengths which starts from 100 K with decreasing temperature. Neutron diffraction measurement was carried out at 8 K and RT. Diffuse scattering at around 1/2 0 1/2 point was observed at 8 K but disappeared in the paramagnetic region.

In this paper the designed digital RF control system and its performance are described.

Abstract: The space group of (ND 4 ) 3 D(SO 4 ) 2 and (NH 4 ) 3 H(SO 4 ) 2 was reported in the literature to be A2/a at the room temperature phase. However, several new Bragg reflections which violated the extinction rule of the a-glide symmetry of the space group A2/a were found by neutron scattering experiments. Therefore, the space group of (ND 4 ) 3 D(SO 4 ) 2 and (NH 4 ) 3 H(SO 4 ) 2 at the room temperature was newly determined as A2. Structure analysis of (ND 4 ) 3 D(SO 4 ) 2 was performed by powder neutron diffraction experiments at 293 K based on the space group A2. The deviation from the space group A2/a is mainly due to the distortion of the ND 4 ions.

Abstract: Successive phase transitions of a hexagonal type BaTiO 3 were investigated by neutron powder diffraction experiments. The present experiments with the short wavelength neutron (1.1623 A) by using Si533 monochromator were compared with the previous work, which was performed with a Si311 monochromator (2.3 A). Remarkable improvements are seen in R F . From the obtained structural data, we could successfully construct the displacement pattern in the low temperature phases, and the order parameters of the phase transitions were clearly understood.

Abstract: The existence of an oscillatory diffuse scattering from the ordered γ-phase of superionic conductor Ag3SI has been confirmed by neutron scattering measurement at 128 K. A newly proposed generalized background function, which includes the correlation between the thermal displacements of atoms, has been applied in the Rietveld analysis. The results give a better fit to the observed background intensities. This result may suggest that the main contribution to the oscillatory diffuse scattering of ordered γ-Ag3SI mainly originates from strong correlation among the displacements of silver and iodine atoms.

Abstract: We investigated the effect of cyclosporin A (CsA) on rat liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy with reference to cytokine production. Rats were divided into two groups: those without CsA pretreatment (group 1) and those with CsA pretreatment (group 2). Animals were given olive oil vehicle or CsA (10 mg/kg) dissolved in olive oil daily by gavage from 4 to 1 days before hepatectomy. The ratio of regenerating liver weight to initial body weight in group 2 was significantly higher than that in group 1 at 72 h. Although a peak 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine labeling index was found at 24 h after hepatectomy in both groups, the peak value in the CsA-treated animals was significantly higher than in controls. In both groups, hepatocyte growth factor concentrations in both plasma and liver tissue showed maximal values at 12 h. Liver tissue values in group 2, however, were significantly higher from 1 to 12 h compared to group 1. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) concentrations showed minimal serial changes in group 1, while those in liver tissue of group 2 rats were significantly lower than in group 1. Plasma TGF-β1 concentrations did not differ. These results suggest that upregulation of hepatic regeneration with CsA pretreatment might be attributed in part to changes in production of these mitogenic and mitoinhibitory cytokines.

Abstract: For a serological diagnostic test for Borna disease (BD), we developed a capture ELISA with specificity and sensitivity based on detection of antibodies against BD virus (BDV) p40 protein. Using our capture ELISA system, the antibody response of rats inoculated intracerebrally with BDV at 4 weeks after birth showed a sharp increase from 1 to 4 weeks postinoculation (p.i.) and a steady level after 5 weeks p.i. To investigate prevalence of BDV infection among wild rats, we examined sera of Rattus norvegicus in Kami-iso town, Oshima district, Hokkaido, suggesting that rats in this area had not been infected by BDV.

Abstract: Structures of the low temperature phases of a hexagonal type BaTiO3 were studied by neutron powder diffraction. In addition, high resolution powder diffraction experiments by using SPring-8 synchrotron radiation was carried out in order to determine the symmetry of phase II and III. The unit cell and the space group of phase II was confirmed to be the orthorhombic and C2221. The symmetry in phase III was newly determined as monoclinic with the deformation of the γ-angle by synchrotron radiation. The most possible symmetry in phase III is C1121, or equivalently P1121 as a crystallographic conventional unit cell. The shift patterns of atoms in phase II and phase III were determined.

Abstract: First lasings of free electron laser (FEL) at ultraviolet range were achieved by using an electron linac with a thermionic gun. The gun is driven by a 22.3125 MHz, 0.5 ns wide, 150 V grid pulser. A short-bunching and strong-focusing system of the injector and a stable 24 μ s RF system allow lasing at 278 nm in spite of a small signal gain of 6%. The maximum focusing field is 0.11–0.12 T near the inlet of the buncher. The axial field distribution gives severe effect on lasing.

Abstract: Compositional separation (CS) has been observed to occur in Co-Cr based alloy thin films producing fine, Co-enriched, strongly ferromagnetic regions within the crystal grains. This CS exhibits a strong correlation with film magnetic properties and may hold the potential for engineering a "particulate type" magnetic microstructure suitable for high density magnetic recording. In this study, we first investigated the effect on CS of varying several growth parameters, with the aim of better understanding how to control the compositional and magnetic microstructures. In particular, reduction in film thickness was found to be very effective for enhancing CS and producing finer in-grain ferromagnetic regions with less coalescence. We therefore proceeded to perform point magnetic recording in Co-Cr films of various thicknesses and found that, although thinner films do support smaller bits, further studies on control of CS and promotion of magnetic isolation of Co-enriched, ferromagnetic regions will he necessary in order to utilize the full potential of CS.

Abstract: Applying a bridged-T type all-pass network to a resonator described as a parallel circuit, the output voltage of the resonator shows a band-pass feature over a certain frequency range, while the input impedance is always constant against frequency. This feature is considered to realize the ferrite-loaded tuning-free rf accelerating cavity. It has several merits such as a simple cavity structure without bias windings, an easy operation without feedback control of the bias current, applying new ferrite with favorable rf characteristics and so on. The accelerating system is applicable to a proton-synchrotron for radio therapy or a cooler-synchrotron for nuclear physics studies in a multi-GeV region. This paper presents a theory of the system, the characteristics of the new ferrite, which is currently developed, and design studies of the network based on preliminary measurements of an equivalent lumped circuit.

Abstract: We have constructed a dedicated diffractometer for neutron crystallography in biology (BIX) at JRR-3M in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. The diffraction intensity from a protein crystal is weaker than that from most of the inorganic materials. In order to overcome the intensity problem, an elastically bent silicon monochromator and a large area detector system have been specially designed. A preliminary result of a diffraction experiment using BIX is reported.

Single-crystal experiments of electrical resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility reveal the existence of three magnetic phase transitions at T1=5.9 K (second order), T2=4.3 K (first order) and T3=2.2 K (first order). Abstract: Recent progress in studies on low carrier concentration systems of magnetically ordered and non-magnetic heavy Fermion metals are discussed. Successive steps in the high field magnetisation, the magnetic structure, and the influence of high pressure are reported and the relation with the observed Fermi surface for CeP is discussed. The origin of the low carrier concentration in USb is also discussed based on the first observation of dHvA oscillations. It is also unambiguously demonstrated that the unconventional heavy Fermion state of Yb4As3 is intrinsic and not due to impurities.

Abstract: First laser oscillation has been obtained at a wavelength of 42.8 μm on June 25, 1993, using a 15-MeV S-band linac, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo. The optical resonator with a 40 period vertical undulator ( K = 0.95) is 3.78 m long and uses Au coated Cu mirrors. The optical axis of the mirrors is adjusted by CPU controlled actuators in order to coincide with the electron beam, which has been adjusted to pass through the center of the magnetic field as close as possible in advance. The power is about 10 4 times higher than that of the spontaneous emission. The FWHM of the FEL spectrum is less than 0.51 μm, which corresponds to Δλ / λ = 1.2%. The tuning range of the cavity is about ΔZ = 20 μ m.

Abstract: X-ray and neutron diffraction studies were performed on nonstoichiometric α - U 2 N 3 + x having a composition range 1.68 N / U α - U 2 N 3 + x in this composition range was a distorted Mn 2 O 3 -type structure. Structure parameters of U and N atoms were determined. Results showed that the positions of U atoms varied continuously with increasing nitrogen content. No evidence of the modification from bcc to fcc could be obtained. Interatomic distances of U-U and U-N were calculated. The position parameter of N atoms showed that the position of N atoms slightly deviated from the tetrahedral site.

Abstract: Two approaches for improving the beam qualities of rf-linacs and storage rings are discussed to generate an intense UV-FEL. On the basis of these discussions, a design study of IR- and UV-FEL facilities using a 170-MeV, S-band linac and a 700-MeV racetrack type storage ring has been done for industrial use. The linac beam will be sent to four undulators using four S-type BT systems installed at 35-, 80-, 130-, and 180-MeV sections at a 30-μs rf pulse operation. The ratio of the cavity length to the undulator length is designed to be less than 2.5. The beam, once used for lasing at the 35-MeV section or at the 80-MeV section, can be bent back to the following accelerating waveguide and is reaccelerated and reused for lasing. Finally, the linac beam, twice used for lasing, is used again for injection into a 700-MeV ring, like NIJI-IV, with an optical klystron, and for positron generations. FELs with three different wavelengths, covering the spectral range from 0.2 to 20 μm, can be used simultaneously, using these undulators and an optical klystron.

Abstract: The diluted magnetic semiconductor, Zn 0.568 Mn 0.432 Te, is studied by means of neutron diffraction and cold neutron scattering below 100 K. Distribution of magnetic diffuse scattering intensity indicates the coexistence of two kinds of antiferromagnetic short-range orders, i.e. type-III and type-I in a face centered cubic Mn sublattice. The type-I short-range order component decreases below spinglass transition temperature, T g =17 K, by applying a magnetic field of 5 Tesla. We newly found a marked increase of quasi-elastic scattering intensity at T g and an unknown broad inelastic peak lying around 1.0 meV at 14 K.

Abstract: The present study is mainly concerned with the relation between electron concentration and anomalous dip appearing on the [110]TA1 phonon branch of the β1-phase (B2-structure) in Ni–Al alloys. By substituting Co for Ni, the dip-position shifts toward the Brillouin zone center. In addition, we prove that the dip appears also in the equilibrium β1-phase existing above Tb-temperature, below which Ni3Al precipitates. The obtained results indicate clearly that the dip is not any precursor of the martensitic transition but a reflection of the electronic property in the β1-phase.
