1. Real-time correction of betatron tune ripples on a slowly extracted beam

Abstract

In the main ring (MR) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), the power supplies of magnets induce large ripples in the betatron tunes. The tune ripples degrade the quality of the beam spill on the slowly extracted beam. To improve the spill quality, the J-PARC MR employed a feedback system using a beam spill monitor; however, the existing system could not correct the beam spills suitably, since the tune ripples were too large. We developed a new correction system using the information of magnet currents as an input of the correction. The new system consists of current monitors and a corrector quadrupole, and it allows us to correct the ripples in real time. Using this system, we successfully corrected the tune ripples for the first time in the J-PARC MR. The correction system improved the spill quality from 3% (without any correction) to 30% (with the new correction), whereas the quality using the present feedback system is 17.4%.

The chemical shifts of the carbon K-edge during the ring-opening dynamics of 1,3-cyclohexadiene observed by femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption confirm that the stereochemistry of the ring-opening reaction follows the Woodward-Hoffmann rule.

Abstract

Photo-stimulated ring-opening reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) to 1,3,5-hexatriene (HT) is a pericyclic reaction and its dynamics has been investigated by various spectroscopic techniques and by theoretical approaches. Upon excitation to the 1B state, the molecular structure is distorted, and the electronic state is changed into the 2A state, of which potential energy surface has a conical intersection with that of the 1A ground state of CHD. At the conical intersection, the electronic state bifurcates toward CHD and the ring-opened HT. HT is formed on the order of a few hundred femtoseconds. [1]

Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of acetylated wood powder (AW) as a new feed additive on performance, liver and muscle metabolism of amino acids and fatty acids and nucleotide-related substances of meat in broiler chickens. It was hypothesised that acetic acid desorbed from AW during intestinal digestion affects tissue metabolism. Two-week-old broiler chicks were divided into four groups and fed on diets supplemented with wood powder (30 g/kg) less than 106 µm in diameter, except for controls. The AW was added to diets at 0, 10 and 30 g/kg to replace the non-acetylated wood powder (NAW) for 26 d. Plasma, liver tissue and breast muscle were taken from half of birds at 40 d of age under the fed condition. After the remaining chickens were fasted for 14 h, breast muscle was taken and refrigerated for 24 h. Consumption of wood powder with or without acetyl groups had no effect on growth performance including tissue weights of abdominal fat and breast muscle and plasma metabolites. Feeding AW decreased total free amino acid concentrations in the liver compared to the group only fed on the NAW. This response was dependent mainly on reduced non-essential and glucogenic amino acid concentrations. However, in breast muscle, alterations of free amino acid concentrations were observed only for histidine and tryptophan. In addition, the fatty acid composition of liver and breast muscle was not affected by feeding AW. In breast meat obtained from fasted chickens, the higher level of AW increased the concentration of inosine 5'-monophosphate, a taste-active compound, and in contrast, decreased the subsequent catabolites (inosine and hypoxanthine). However, the concentration of glutamic acid, a taste-active compound, was lowered at this level of AW ingestion. Therefore, this study suggested that feeding AW as a new feed additive regulates ante-mortem amino acid utilisation in the liver and contributes to retard post-mortem degradation of inosine 5'-monophosphate as a taste-active compound in chicken meat.

Abstract

It is important to control the magnet current for a high-intensity proton beam because the magnetic field error displaces the beam parameters (i.e., center of orbit, transverse tune, etc.) from the ideal values and such displacements cause severe beam loss. This issue is much more severe for synchrotrons because the magnetic field must be changed for acceleration. For more precise control of the power supplies, we developed low-noise 24-bit A/D boards for high-precision current measurement. In addition, we developed an algorithm and DSP boards to correct the current deviation. We successfully controlled the magnet current at a level of ppm for all frequencies using sextupole magnets in the J-PARC MR. In this paper, the details of the control system and results of the tests using the magnets in the synchrotron are described.

Abstract

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment is a second generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment which aims at a sensitive search for the nu_e appearance. The main design features of the T2K near detectors located at 280 m from the target are presented. Scintillator counters developed for the T2K near detectors are described. Readout of the counters is provided via WLS fibers embedded into S-shape grooves in a scintillator and viewed from both ends by multi-pixel avalanche photodiodes operating in a limited Geiger mode. A desription, operational principles and the results of tests of photosensors with a sensitive area of 1.1 mm^2 are presented. A time resolution of 1.5 ns, a spatial resolution of 9.9-12.4 cm, and a MIP detection efficiency of more than 99% were obtained for scintillator detectors in a beam test., Comment: 23 pages, 20 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We present measurements of nu_mu disappearance in K2K, the KEK to Kamioka long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. One hundred and twelve beam-originated neutrino events are observed in the fiducial volume of Super-Kamiokande with an expectation of 158.1^{+9.2}_{-8.6} events without oscillation. A distortion of the energy spectrum is also seen in 58 single-ring muon-like events with reconstructed energies. The probability that the observations are explained by the expectation for no neutrino oscillation is 0.0015% (4.3sigma). In a two flavor oscillation scenario, the allowed Delta m^2 region at sin^2(2theta) is between 1.9 and 3.5 x 10^{-3} eV^2 at the 90% C.L. with a best-fit value of 2.8 x 10^{-3} eV^2., Comment: 40 pages, 48 figures

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. Abstract

Polyurethane (PU) films were prepared by solution-casting after co-polymerization of liquefied woods (LWs) and polymeric methylene diphenylene diisocyanate (PMDI). The resulting PU films had various [NCO]/[OH] ratios ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 and contained 5.0–16.8% dissolved woody components at the [NCO]/[OH] ratio of 1.0. The crosslink densities of the films with [NCO]/[OH] ratios of 0.6–1.4 increased remarkably with increasing [NCO]/[OH] ratio. Similarly, there were large increases in glass transition temperatures ( T g ). These characteristics could be attributed to effective incorporation of PMDI into the LW. The crosslink densities and T g of the PU films prepared at the [NCO]/[OH] ratio of 1.0 increased because the amounts of dissolved woody components in the films increased. It is concluded that the dissolved woody components acted as crosslinking points in PU network formations. The thermal degradation of the PU films at an [NCO]/[OH] ratio of more than 0.8 or with more than 10.6% dissolved wood started above 262°C under an N 2 atmosphere. The thermostability was lost at low crosslink density or with large amount of co-polymerized glycerol structures in the PU networks.

Abstract

The SciBooNE experiment is designed to measure neutrino cross sections on carbon around 1 GeV region. This article introduces the SciBooNE experiment and reports on the current status of a cross section measurement of the neutral current neutral pion production. We used 0.99 × 10 20 protons on target (POT) for this measurement. After event selections, about 450 signal events are estimated in the Monte Carlo(MC) simulation.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors propose a novel block feeding method for use in linear induction motors. The proposed method involves shifting of the excited section at every coil. Using the proposed method, the excited-section length can be shortened greatly compared with that in the ordinary method shifting at every block section. Thus, the power consumption becomes lower, improving efficiency. In addition, by short-circuiting the coils at both ends of the excited section during shifting, continuous power supply becomes possible, and thus electric transient phenomena are reduced. They confirm the validity of the method by finite element analysis and experiments.

Abstract

Li pellets of large size were injected into electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heated plasmas and neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasmas of Heliotron E. The discharge behaviour, pellet ablation and wall conditioning were studied. The electron pressure is doubled after injection into the NBI plasma and remains unchanged in the case of ECR heating. This may be due to the energy exchange between the electrons and thermal ions with the fast ions from the neutral beam. The observed discrepancy between the experimental and modelled ablation rates may be caused by both the plasma cooling due to pellet ablatant and the ablation stimulated by the fast ions in the NBI-heated regime and by the fast electrons in the ECR-heated regime. In preliminary experiments on wall conditioning by Li pellet injection, no improvement of plasma performance after Li pellet injection was observed in the divertor or limiter configuration, with the limiter radii .

Abstract

The physics of the formation and termination of high ion temperature mode (high mode) is studied by controlling density profiles and radial electric field. High ion temperature mode is observed for neutral beam heated plasmas in heliotron/torsatron plasmas (Heliotron-E). This high mode plasma is characterized by a peaked ion temperature profile and is associated with a peaked electron density profile produced by neutral beam fuelling with low wall recycling. This high mode is terminated by flattening of the electron density caused either by gas puffing or by second-harmonic ECH (core density `pump out').

Abstract

To report quantitative changes in the anterior chamber configuration after small-incision cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens by means of ultrasound biomicroscopy.We examined the anterior chamber configuration of 20 eyes of 20 patients before and 3 months after small-incision cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and aspiration plus foldable intraocular lens implantation through a 3.0- to 4.0-mm self-sealing wound) by means of ultrasound biomicroscopy. The following variables were measured: the anterior chamber depth at the center of the cornea, the angle-opening distance 250 microns from the scleral spur (AOD250), the angle-opening distance 500 microns from the scleral spur (AOD500), and the trabecular-iris angle.The anterior chamber depth at the center of the cornea, AOD250, AOD500, and trabecular-iris angle increased significantly after surgery. The preoperative anterior chamber depth at the center of the cornea and trabecular-iris angle were negatively correlated with the differences between the postoperative and preoperative values (P.01). The preoperative values of all variables examined were negatively correlated with the ratios of the postoperative value to the preoperative value (P.002).The present results showed that small-incision cataract surgery significantly deepened the anterior chamber and widened its angle. The more shallow the preoperative anterior chamber was, the greater the postoperative change of the chamber was; and the more narrow the preoperative angle was, the greater the postoperative change of the angle was.

Abstract

The inward shift and the toroidal precession of the deeply trapped ion orbit in Heliotron E plasmas are measured using the charge exchange analysis, and found to be consistent with the classical drift orbit theory. Depletion structures on energy spectra are observed during limiter insertion or pellet injection. Furthermore, the rapid change of the depletion structures by additional beam injection or limiter bias is also investigated. These depletion structures can be explained by an effect of the resonant loss due to the negative radial electric field, E r . Theoretical analysis of the E r profile shows that a positive E r in the vicinity of the loss boundary disturbs the resonant condition of deeply trapped particles locally, and can reduce the resonant loss cone.

Abstract

In the Heliotron E device, combining a neutral beam injection (NBI) with an electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) system, new physical issues are applied to the investigation of fast ion behavior. Especially, the slowing-down (deceleration and parallel diffusion) and the loss processes are studied experimentally through measurements of the temporal change of charge-exchange neutral particle energy spectra. As results, first, in the longer slowing-down time (τ s ∼200 ms) plasma realized by ECRH, discrepancies from the theoretical values are detected in the deceleration and the parallel diffusion processes, whose factors are 4∼6 for the former, 6∼13 for the latter. Second, the fast ion loss cone is reduced by the ECRH on the NBI plasma, of which cause is discussed associated with the modification of the radial electric field, E r .

Abstract

The charge exchange energy spectrum of beam ions is analyzed in order to study the fast ion confinement. The spectrum is observed to have a depletion, and the effects of the magnetic field, B0 and radial electric field, Er, induced losses on the depletion structures are discussed. Relaxation oscillations of the spectrum are found and a time varying Er is considered to interpret them. A reduction of the depletion structure is observed with electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), and is discussed with the edge Er change and improved ion heating.

Abstract

This paper describes magnetic equilibrium diagnostics that are installed both inside and outside the vacuum vessel in the toroidal helical device Heliotron E. These magnetic diagnostics consist of Rogowski coils for plasma currents, a diamagnetic loop with compensation coils, a set of full flux loops, a set of partial saddle loops, modulated Rogowski coils with several harmonics, a 2D array of Bp coils and Rogowski coils for bus lines of helical, auxiliary vertical and toroidal coils. Up to now we have routinely obtained the diamagnetic stored energy, toroidal plasma currents, the dipole moment of the Pfirsch-Schluter current, the toroidal voltage, the finite β free-boundary plasma shift and poloidal fluxes. We will describe the signals of measured magnetic fluxes and give some interpretations of the finite β equilibrium.

Abstract

In the Heliotron E device, fast ion slowing-down processes (deceleration, parallel diffusion, and pitch angle scattering) and the particle loss process are investigated by the measurement temporal behaviour of charge-exchange energy spectra during neutral beam injection (NBI). Using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), two effects are studied with respect to: (1) extrapolation of slowing-down behaviour to a longer slowing-down time and (2) modification of the ion loss associated with the radial electric field. It is found that (1) there are discrepancies :in the theoretical value in the deceleration and the parallel diffusion processes in NBI + ECRH and ECRH plasmas, and that (2) the particle loss is reduced by the use of ECRH on the NBI plasma.

Abstract

A magnetic determination of the dipole moment of the Pfirsch-Schluter current in a finite beta stellarator/heliotron plasma is described. The rotating cosine saddle diagnostic coils and the poloidal flux loops are used to identify the dipole current in a finite beta toroidal plasma. A typical dipole moment of the toroidal current in the standard Heliotron E configuration is 0.6 kA m, when the volume averaged beta is 0.50% at a magnetic field of 0.94 T. The measured equilibrium dipole current is practically proportional to the diamagnetic volume average beta available up to 0.95%. The observed dipole moment of the Pfirsch-Schluter current is compared with a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculation for a finite beta stellarator plasma

Abstract

Observations of resonance lines in the 150 to 400A spectral range provide useful information regarding the behaviour of impurities in a laboratory plasma. Heliotron E emission spectra were recorded using a time-resolved VUV spectroscopy system, and line emission in this range was found to be dominated by impurity radiation from oxygen, carbon, iron and nickel. The magnetic axis of the plasma can be moved relative to the vessel wall, and so a study is presented of the effects of a shift in magnetic axis on the evolution of VUV impurity radiation from different ionic states. Differences in behaviour of different states are analysed by the comparison of observed spectra with plasma coronal equilibrium models.

Abstract

Changes of impurity behavior and plasma performances by a boronization were investigated in Heliotron E. A 2.45 GHz ECH boronization with helium and decaborane at B=0.046 T was developed. The concentration of H/B atomic ratio in the deposited boron layer was much smaller than that of conventional dc glow discharges and the typical value was 0.1. The light impurity, oxygen and carbon, decreased drastically, but the reduction of the metallic impurity, iron and chromium, was not observed. A small H/B atomic ratio and low levels in the light impurity provided high ion temperature and low density plasma by neutral beam injectin heating.

Abstract

The characteristics near the last closed flux surface have been studied with a multi-faced Langmuir probe for the edge heated ECH plasmas in Heliotron E. Related to the usually observed degradation of the particle confinement in ECH plasmas (plasma “pump-out” phenomena), we have made the following observations. (a) The characteristics of the plasma flow and electrostatic fluctuations differ with and without the plasma pump-out phenomena, (b) these changes are closely coupled to the loss of the energetic electrons produced by ECH and/or to the resultant electric field, (c) the fluctuation-induced particle flux is well correlated with the degradation of the particle transport.

Abstract

The present work is intended to renew the interest in a basic understanding of the stationary transport of Heliotron E with direct ion heating in the framework of neoclassical theory. It should be noticed here that the experimental evaluation of {Chi}{sup exp}{sub i} in such a low collisional regime in heliotron/torsatron configuration was for the first time achieved in this study. However, the transport can be enhanced by turbulence, resulting in the degraded conditions like the L-mode of tokamak operation. In this connection this paper also discusses the possible contribution from the drift wave turbulence that is expected to affect the anomaly of the observed heat fluxes. The ion heat transport in the outer region of the plasma was interpreted as being enhanced by the electrostatic drift wave modes on the basis of the proposed diffusivity model. The result obtained through these analyses has stimulated our further efforts for producing a more collisionless regime where the electric field will control the transport. 11 refs., 6 figs.

Abstract

Recent results of Heliotron E experiment are reviewed. Detailed studies of the plasma transport have been achieved in Heliotron E, in which the plasma wall interaction has been changed using the ECH boronization technique. The boronization realized low-density, high-T{sub i} plasmas whose ion collisionality deeply estended to the 1/{nu}{sub i}** regime. The local electron and ion thermal diffusivities in the NBI plasma are analyzed and discussed by comparison with theory-based transport models. The particle transport in ECH plasmas is investigated with edge fluctuation measurements. Both electrostatic and magnetic fluctuations are well correlated with the global particle confinement. Characteristic structures of the electric field or potential distribution are observed during the particle confinement degradation phase. It is considered that dc convective flow across the last closed flux surface is caused by the potential structure. Edge plasma flows have been discussed in connection with these studies and with asymmetric divertor heat/particle load. 10 refs., 9 figs.

Abstract

An edge electron cyclotron heating (ECH) experiment has been performed on the Heliotron-E helical device using 35 GHz and 53 GHz gyrotrons. Transition phenomena have been observed during the 53 GHz edge ECH. The Hα emission and the outflux to the wall dropped, and then the core electron density increased by 20%–60%. The electron stored energy seems to be improved up to 20% after the transition. This phenomenon is found to depend strongly on the edge heating power, the target plasma density and the limiter position. A possible mechanism is discussed in terms of high energy electrons produced by the edge ECH.

Abstract

The SciBooNE and MiniBooNE collaborations report the results of a νμ disappearance search in the Δ'm2 region of 0.5-40 eV2. The neutrino rate as measured by the SciBooNE tracking detectors is used to constrain the rate at the MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector in the first joint analysis of data from both collaborations. Two separate analyses of the combined data samples set 90% confidence level (CL) limits on νμ disappearance in the 0.5-40 eV2 Δm2 region, with an improvement over previous experimental constraints between 10 and 30 eV2

Abstract

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 × 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14(syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ → ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ(23)) = 0.98 and |Δm(2)(32)| = 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2. The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points (sin2 (2θ(23)), |Δm(2)(32)|) = (1.0, 3.1 × 10(−3) eV2), (0.84, 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2) and (1.0, 2.2 × 10(−3) eV2)., Physical Review D, 85 (3), ISSN:1550-7998, ISSN:0556-2821, ISSN:1550-2368

Abstract

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports K+ production cross section and rate measurements using high energy daughter muon neutrino scattering data off the SciBar polystyrene (C8H8) target in the SciBooNE detector. The K+ mesons are produced by 8 GeV protons striking a beryllium target in Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam line (BNB). Using observed neutrino and antineutrino events in SciBooNE, we measure d2σ/dpdΩ = (5.34 ±0.76) mb/(GeV/c x sr) for p + Be =K+ + X at mean K+ energy of 3.9 GeV and angle (with respect to the proton beam direction) of 3.7 degrees, corresponding to the selected K+ sample. Compared to Monte Carlo predictions using previous higher energy K+ production measurements, this measurement, which uses the NUANCE neutrino interaction generator, is consistent with a normalization factor of 0.85 ± 0.12. This agreement is evidence that the extrapolation of the higher energy K+ measurements to an 8 GeV beam energy using Feynman scaling is valid. This measurement reduces the error on the K+ production cross section from 40% to 14%.

Abstract

In this paper we report on the measurement of the rate of inclusive $\pi^0$ production induced by charged-current neutrino interactions in a C$_8$H$_8$ target at a mean energy of 1.3 GeV in the K2K near detector. Out of a sample of 11,606 charged current neutrino interactions, we select 479 $\pi^0$ events with two reconstructed photons. We find that the cross section for the inclusive $\pi^0$ production relative to the charged-current quasi-elastic cross section is $$\frac{\sigma_{CC\pi^0}}{\sigma_{CCQE}}=0.426\pm0.032(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.)$$ The energy dependent cross section ratio is also measured. Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

THE RECENT ISOLATION AND AMPLIFICATION of multipotent stem cells in the laboratory (1,2) has enlivened the fields of mammalian development and transplantation. Yet the very plasticity that makes these cells so interesting biologically makes them difficult to track as they integrate into host tissues. Here we describe the isolation of stem cells from the brain and retina of mice expressing the enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) transgene, and the transplantation of these cells to the brain and retina of nontransgenic recipients. The most successful method for labeling stem cells has been transfection with a heritable reporter gene such as beta-galactosidase (b-GAL) (3) or GFP (4). These techniques are performed following isolation and prior to grafting. They are slow, labor-intensive, and require transfection of each cell type isolated, as well as repeated clonal selection for high level expression. Loss of transgene expression following differentiation or transplantation is an additional problem with these techniques. Furthermore, each transfection alters the genome unpredictably, risking unintentional changes in stem cell phenotype. While direct isolation of stem cells from b-Gal1 mice has been described, this label has the disadvantage of requiring an exogenous substrate for visualization. By harvesting from donors transgenic for GFP, it should be possible to obtain stem cell lines exhibiting uniformly high levels of constitutive reporter gene expression. Transgenic animals expressing GFP throughout their body have been generated in a number of species, including mice (5–7). We harvested tissue from newborn GFP transgenic mice and isolated stem cells from the brain (BSCs) and neuroretina (RSCs) using established methods (20 ng/mL EGF and bFGF). In both cases, GFP1 neurospheres appeared within the first 3 days and have now been maintained in culture for more than 1 year. To assess the capacity for self-renewal, spheres were broken up and plated as single cells. Individual cells formed new spheres over a period of 2–5 days, with number and size proportional to time in culture. Spheres labeled positively for nestin, an intermediate filament expressed by neuronal and glial precursors, and for Ki-67, which recognizes actively mitotic cells (Fig. 1a–1c). Spheres cultured in the presence of 10% fetal bovine serum generated cells that maintained their green fluorescence and co-labeled with neural markers. BSCs differentiated into cells labeled with markers of each neural lineage; that is, neurons (MAP-2), astrocytes (GFAP) and oligodendrocytes (GalC) (Fig. 1d–1f). RSCs did not differentiate into oligodendrocytes, a cell type not normally generated in the retina, but did differentiate into cells expressing the photoreceptor-specific marker rhodopsin. Green mouse neurospheres were injected into sites within the brain and eye of mature mice. Transplanted BSCs survived, maintained GFP expression (as evidenced by co-labeling after pulsing with BrdU in vitro), migrated widely and showed morphological evidence of integration with the host central nervous system (Fig. 1g). Abstract

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports inclusive neutral current neutral pion production by a muon neutrino beam on a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtain (7.7 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.5(sys)) X 10(-2) as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein-Sehgal model implemented in our neutrino interaction simulation program with nuclear effects. The spectrum shape of the pi(0) momentum and angle agree with the model. We also measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pion production to total charged current cross section to be (0.7 +/- 0.4) X 10(-2)., We acknowledge the Physics Department at Chonnam National University, Dongshin University, and Seoul National University for the loan of parts used in SciBar and the help in the assembly of SciBar. Abstract

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of neutral current coherent pi(0) production on carbon by a muon neutrino beam with average energy 0.8 GeV. The separation of coherent from inclusive pi(0) production has been improved by detecting recoil protons from resonant pi(0) production. We measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pi(0) production to total charged current cross sections to be 1.16 +/- 0.24) x 10(-2). Abstract

A comparative study on edge plasma properties between the original “natural” divertor configuration and the material limiter configuration was performed for Heliotron E currentless plasma. By insertion of a carbon rail limiter, the particle and heat fluxes to the divertor footprint were reduced to 20–50% of that in the divertor configuration. Such a reduction of influx resulted in the decrease of metal impurities sputtered from the wall surface. There were no clear differences in the edge density and heat flux profiles for NBI plasma between the limiter and divertor scrape-off. In the limiter configuration, a highly heat loaded area was observed locally on only one side of the limiter head. A perturbation field affected this local heat load.

Abstract

The reduction of metallic impurity was found in a carbon limiter configuration in Heliotron E. In order to investigate the impurity penetration into the plasma, the distance between the outermost magnetic surface and the vacuum vessel wall was varied by inserting a carbon rail limiter. The analysis of vacuum ultraviolet impurity spectra and charge exchange neutral fluxes shows that the decrease of the impurity production rates by charge exchange neutral particles is the most probable reason to explain the experimental results. Moreover the electron temperature and density profiles in the limiter shadow provide an ability to screen metallic impurity influxes from the wall.

Abstract

Purpose To generate a transgenic (Tg) rabbit model of retinal degeneration and to characterize the pattern of degeneration by using histology and electrophysiology. Methods Rhodopsin Pro347Leu Tg rabbits were generated by BAC transgenesis. Tg rabbits were identified by Southern blot analysis, and the expression levels were measured by quantitative RT-PCR. Retinal histology was examined by light and electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Retinal function was assessed by full-field electroretinograms (ERGs). Results Six lines of Tg rabbits were generated, and two lines with higher levels of expression showed rod-dominant progressive retinal degeneration. Retinal histology indicated a marked regional variation in the loss of photoreceptors with the central retina more severely affected than the peripheral retina. The characteristics of the ERGs of transgenic rabbits indicated that the rod components of the ERGs were reduced to only 5% by 48 weeks, whereas the cone components remained at 35% in the wild-type at the same time point. The retinal ultrastructure of Tg rabbits showed a large number of small vesicles that accumulated in the extracellular space of the photoreceptors. Conclusions To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first rabbit model of progressive retinal degeneration. Because rabbits have large eyes and are easy to handle and breed, they will provide a useful animal model for the study of the pathophysiology of and new treatments for retinal degeneration.

The SciBooNE Collaboration has performed a search for charged current coherent pion production from muon neutrinos scattering on carbon, \nu_\mu ^{12}C \to \mu^- ^{12}C \pi^+, with two distinct data samples. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed. Abstract

The authors present a case report of a 79-year-old man with insufficient cardiac contractile function who underwent endovascular stent-grafting for an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Thirty months later, the aneurysm ruptured into the inferior vena cava and subsequently formed an aortocaval fistula caused by migration of the stent-graft. Urgent secondary endovascular stent-grafting successfully excluded the blood flow into the vena cava. Endovascular stent-grafting is deemed suitable for treating this serious disorder, especially in severely debilitated or compromised patients who might not withstand a standard surgical intervention. Furthermore, in patients with previous stent-grafting, since the primary stent-graft makes repair by open surgery more difficult, a secondary endovascular intervention is recommended if feasible.

Abstract

Silicone rubber used for polymeric insulators has good hydrophobicity and recovery characteristic of it. CIGRE WG D1.14 aims to establish new test procedure, dynamic drop test. That can evaluate the property of hydrophobicity loss of silicone rubber easily and with small systems. So, we clarified the relation between processes of hydrophobicity deterioration or loss and leakage current waveform in dynamic drop test. The hydrophobic conditions were classified into three categories. In the condition of keeping hydrophobicity, pulse discharges were repeatedly observed at the time when droplets ran down. As hydrophobicity deteriorated, small water droplets remained on the surface and many pulse discharges were observed when the droplets ran down. The tendency of the current ingredient of 60 Hz became more dominant and discharge light started to be observed continuously regardless of the timing of the droplets just before when hydrophobicity lost. Then it was considered that a thin moisture layer was formed on the surface, although only droplets were observed with the naked eye. Finally, the leakage current flowed continuously.

The photopic negative response (PhNR) is a slow, negative-going wave of the photopic electroretinogram (ERG) that appears after the b-wave. Recent studies have shown that the PhNR originates from the spiking activities of inner retinal neurons including the ganglion cells and their axons. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is any asymmetry in the amplitude of the PhNR elicited from the upper and lower macular areas, and between the nasal and temporal macular areas in rhesus monkeys. To accomplish this, we recorded focal macular PhNRs that were elicited by red hemi-circular stimuli presented on a blue background. We show that the PhNR from the upper macular area was significantly larger than that of the lower macular area, and the PhNR of the nasal macula was significantly larger than that of the temporal macula. These asymmetries were present in the focal PhNR elicited by both brief and long duration stimuli, and the asymmetries were completely eliminated by an intravitreal injection of tetrodotoxin (TTX). These results suggest that the upper–lower and nasal-temporal asymmetries of PhNR in the primate retina are mainly caused by TTX-sensitive spiking activities of inner retinal neurons.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To record the photopic negative response (PhNR) of the focal electroretinograms (ERGs) from the macula of monkeys and to study the properties of the focal macular PhNRs. METHODS: Focal macular ERGs were recorded from five rhesus monkeys using a modified infrared fundus camera, in which a red stimulus spot on a blue illuminated background were incorporated. The effects of different stimulus intensities and durations presented on a steady blue background of 100 scot cd/m(2) on the focal macular PhNRs were investigated. Abstract

The atmospheric neutrino background for proton decay via p→e + π 0 in ring imaging water Cherenkov detectors is studied with an artificial accelerator neutrino beam for the first time. In total, 3.14 × 10 5 neutrino events corresponding to about 10 megaton-years of atmospheric neutrino interactions were collected by a 1000 ton water Cherenkov detector (KT). The KT charged-current single π 0 production data are well reproduced by simulation programs of neutrino and secondary hadronic interactions used in the Super-Kamiokande (SK) proton decay search. The obtained p→ e + π 0 background rate by the KT data for SK from the atmospheric neutrinos whose energies are below 3 GeV is 1.63 +0.42 -0.33 (stat) +0.45 -0.51 (syst)(megaton-year) -1 . This result is also relevant to possible future, megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors.

Single charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions with carbon is studied using data collected in the K2K long-baseline neutrino experiment. The mean energy of the incident muon neutrinos is 1.3 GeV. The data used in this analysis are mainly from a fully active scintillator detector, SciBar. Abstract

It is important to investigate the inside of the hull of a submerged wreck for identifying the accident circumstances and causes. Oil-tanker wrecks usually cause serious damage to natural environment. Periodical inspection is also necessary to protect ocean environment. Although these operations are normally carried out by Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), they require specifically designed support vessels with heavy equipment. Thus, their mobility is inevitably restricted for immediate operation. Therefore, it is expected that the demand for the development of compact and intelligent Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to undertake these complicated missions will increase greatly over the next few years. Since AUV navigation into a semi-closed space is a dangerous operation, the AUV should be aware of its surroundings in real time and make careful path planning based on sensory data. Although acoustic sensors are utilized to survey underwater objects, they are seriously affected by multipath effects in a narrow closed space, and may have poor accuracy and resolution, which are not sufficient for AUV navigation. In this paper, we propose an autonomous navigation and investigation system by stereo vision for surveying closed spaces. The system was implemented in a newly constructed AUV, "Tam-Egg 2", a small size autonomous underwater vehicle, and the vehicle successfully identified the rectangular windows of a model hull placed in an experiment tank, and passed through them without touching the hull.

Abstract

This document presents the physics case for bringing SciBar, the fully active, finely segmented tracking detector at KEK, to the FNAL Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) line. This unique opportunity arose with the termination of K2K beam operations in 2005. At that time, the SciBar detector became available for use in other neutrino beam lines, including the BNB, which has been providing neutrinos to the MiniBooNE experiment since late 2002. The physics that can be done with SciBar/BNB can be put into three categories, each involving several measurements. First are neutrino cross section measurements which are interesting in their own right, including analyses of multi-particle final states, with unprecedented statistics. Second are measurements of processes that represent the signal and primary background channels for the upcoming T2K experiment. Third are measurements which improve existing or planned MiniBooNE analyses and the understanding of the BNB, both in neutrino and antineutrino mode. For each of these proposed measurements, the SciBar/BNB combination presents a unique opportunity or will significantly improve upon current or near-future experiments for several reasons. First, the fine granularity of SciBar allows detailed reconstruction of final states not possible with the MiniBooNE detector. Additionally, the BNB neutrino energy spectrum is amore » close match to the expected T2K energy spectrum in a region where cross sections are expected to vary dramatically with energy. As a result, the SciBar/BNB combination will provide cross-section measurements in an energy range complementary to MINERvA and complete the knowledge of neutrino cross sections over the entire energy range of interest to the upcoming off-axis experiments.« less
