The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon-born lead from liquid scintillator.

We present a status of the development of microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) for a detection of athermal phonons in a substrate. The energy deposited in the substrate is converted to athermal phonons. Athermal phonons arriving at the surface can break Cooper pairs in the MKIDs which are formed as a thin superconducting metal layer in the substrate surface. By counting the number of Cooper pairs broken and measuring the phonon arrival times, we can measure the amount of deposited energy and its position. MKIDs are suitable for the frequency-domain multiplexing readout, which enables us to readout hundreds of pixels simultaneously and, hence, to detect athermal phonons with a large detection efficiency. We fabricated MKIDs with a combination of aluminum and niobium on a silicon substrate, and then irradiated it with \(\alpha \) particles from an \(^{241}\)Am source. We detected phonons and made a rough estimation of the phonon propagation velocity of 1.1–1.3 km/s. We found that a thin insulator layer can block the phonon propagation from the substrate to the thin metal layer.

Primordial gravitational waves generated by inflation have produced an odd-parity pattern B-mode in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization. LiteBIRD (Light satellite for the studies of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection) aims at detecting this B-mode polarization precisely. It requires about 2000 detectors capable of detecting a frequency range from 50 GHz to 250 GHz with ultra low noise. Superconducting detectors are suitable for this requirement. We have fabricated and tested microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) and developed a new readout system. We have designed antenna-coupled MKIDs. Quasi-particles are created by incident radiation and are detected as a change of the surface impedance of a superconductor strip. This change of the surface impedance is translated into the change of the resonant frequency of a microwave signal transmitted through the resonator. We also have developed a new readout system for MKIDs. The newly developed readout system is not only able to read out the amplitude and the phase data with the homodyne detection for multi-channels, but also provides a unique feature of tracking the resonant frequency of the target resonator. This mechanism enables us to detect signals with a large dynamic range. We report on the recent R&D status of the developing MKIDs and on the read-out system for LiteBIRD.

We present the mission design of LiteBIRD, a next generation satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and inflation from cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) detection. The science goal of LiteBIRD is to measure the CMB polarization with the sensitivity of δr = 0:001, and this allows testing the major single-field slow-roll inflation models experimentally. The LiteBIRD instrumental design is purely driven to achieve this goal. At the earlier stage of the mission design, several key instrumental specifications, e.g. observing band, optical system, scan strategy, and orbit, need to be defined in order to process the rest of the detailed design. We have gone through the feasibility studies for these items in order to understand the tradeoffs between the requirements from the science goal and the compatibilities with a satellite bus system. We describe the overview of LiteBIRD and discuss the tradeoffs among the choices of scientific instrumental specifications and strategies. The first round of feasibility studies will be completed by the end of year 2014 to be ready for the mission definition review and the target launch date is in early 2020s.

Background Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) stimulates the mitogenesis of various cells and plays a key part in wound healing. Objectives To determine the spatial and temporal expression of bFGF protein during wound healing after burning of rat skin. Methods Immunohistochemical methods were used. Results The immunostaining for bFGF in the normal epidermis was faint and sporadic in the basal cell layer. However, significant staining for bFGF was found in four locations: regenerated epidermis, a band-like zone near the regenerated epidermis, renewed capillaries, and cells infiltrating into the granulation tissue at the inflammatory to proliferative stages after the burn. The intensity of immunostaining of regenerated epidermis, the band-like zone and renewed capillaries was maximal during the proliferative stage and decreased to normal levels or disappeared simultaneously with wound closure. Immunopositive macrophage-like cell numbers in the granulation tissue increased during the proliferative stage and promptly decreased after wound closure, but such cells were only poorly visible in the scar tissue until 42 days postburn. Conclusions bFGF may affect the proliferation, differentiation and migration of regenerated keratinocytes and the recruitment of inflammatory cells, as well as neovascularization in granulation tissue during wound healing. Macrophages may play a pivotal role in cutaneous wound repair by producing bFGF not only during the inflammatory or proliferative stages but also during the remodelling stage.

The performance of scintillating fiber detectors with 2 m long light guides was investigated for COMPASS experiment, using a 450 MeV/ c electron beam.Prototypes consisting of 0.5 mm diameter fibers (Kuraray SCSF-38 single-cladding) with the position-sensitive photomultipliers H6568 (Hamamatsu) were constructed for the test. The time resolution of σ ∼430 ps was obtained with about 10 photoelectrons for the prototype of 10-layers structure.

A case of cutaneous angiosarcoma occurring in a 51-year-old male renal transplant patient is reported. Multiple violaceous nodules surrounded by poorly demarcated red to purple discoloration were found on his scalp. Immunosuppressants consisting of azathioprine and prednisolone had been administered during the 12-year period since the renal transplantation. We diagnosed the lesion clinically as a cutaneous angiosarcoma and performed a wide surgical excision. The histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis and showed tumour cells in the peripheral margin. Postoperatively, the patient started immunotherapy with systemic administration of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2), but he refused to continue it because of the acute rejection of the transplanted kidney induced by the rIL-2. Instead he received radiation therapy (total 7000 rad) of the scalp. Although no recurrence was noticed for 15 months after the completion of radiation, he died due to lung metastasis from angiosarcoma. We review the seven cases, including ours, of angiosarcoma after renal transplantation that are reported in detail in the literature.

Double Chooz is unique among modern reactor-based neutrino experiments studying ν¯e disappearance in that data can be collected with all reactors off. In this paper, we present data from 7.53 days of reactor-off running. Applying the same selection criteria as used in the Double Chooz reactor-on oscillation analysis, a measured background rate of 1.0±0.4 events/day is obtained. The background model for accidentals, cosmogenic β-n-emitting isotopes, fast neutrons from cosmic muons, and stopped-μ decays used in the oscillation analysis is demonstrated to be correct within the uncertainties. Kinematic distributions of the events, which are dominantly cosmic-ray-produced correlated-background events, are provided. The background rates are scaled to the shielding depths of two other reactor-based oscillation experiments, Daya Bay and RENO., United States. Dept. of Energy, National Science Foundation (U.S.)

The Double Chooz experiment has observed 8,249 candidate electron antineutrino events in 227.93 live days with 33.71 GW-ton-years (reactor power x detector mass x livetime) exposure using a 10.3 cubic meter fiducial volume detector located at 1050 m from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The expectation in case of theta13 = 0 is 8,937 events. The deficit is interpreted as evidence of electron antineutrino disappearance. From a rate plus spectral shape analysis we find sin^2 2{\theta}13 = 0.109 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.025(syst). The data exclude the no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.9% CL (3.1{\sigma}).

LiteBIRD [Lite (Light) satellite for the studies of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection] is a small satellite to map the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation over the full sky at large angular scales with unprecedented precision. Cosmological inflation, which is the leading hypothesis to resolve the problems in the Big Bang theory, predicts that primordial gravitational waves were created during the inflationary era. Measurements of polarization of the CMB radiation are known as the best probe to detect the primordial gravitational waves. The LiteBIRD working group is authorized by the Japanese Steering Committee for Space Science (SCSS) and is supported by JAXA. It has more than 50 members from Japan, USA and Canada. The scientific objective of LiteBIRD is to test all the representative inflation models that satisfy single-field slow-roll conditions and lie in the large-field regime. To this end, the requirement on the precision of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, at LiteBIRD is equal to or less than 0.001. Our baseline design adopts an array of multi-chroic superconducting polarimeters that are read out with high multiplexing factors in the frequency domain for a compact focal plane. The required sensitivity of 1.8μKarcmin is achieved with 2000 TES bolometers at 100mK. The cryogenic system is based on the Stirling/JT technology developed for SPICA, and the continuous ADR system shares the design with future X-ray satellites.

The results were obtained from a single 10m3 fiducial volume detector located 1050 m from the two reactor cores. The reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 flux measurement after correction for differences in core composition. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a nonzero value of the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter sin⁡22θ13. Analyzing both the rate of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum, we find sin⁡22θ13=0.086±0.041(stat)±0.030(syst), or, at 90% C.L., 0.017

We present the results of a search for extraterrestrial electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_{e}$'s) in the energy range $8.3 MeV < E_{\bar{\nu}_{e}} < 31.8 MeV$ using the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 4.53 kton-year, we identify 25 candidate events. All of the candidate events can be attributed to background, most importantly neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, setting an upper limit on the probability of $^{8}$B solar $\nu_{e}$'s converting into $\bar{\nu}_{e}$'s at $5.3 \times 10^{-5}$ (90% C.L.), if we assume an undistorted $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ shape. This limit corresponds to a solar $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ flux of $93 cm^{-2} s^{-1}$ or an event rate of $1.6 events (kton-year)^{-1}$ above the energy threshold $(E_{\bar{\nu}_{e}} > 8.3 MeV)$. The present data also allows us to set more stringent limits on the diffuse supernova neutrino flux and on the annihilation rates for light dark matter particles., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

The partial nucleotide sequences of 607 cDNAs randomly isolated from a cDNA library of cultured human epidermal keratinocytes were determined by single pass sequencing. Homology search of the sequences to the non-redundant nucleotide databases revealed that 27% of the cDNAs matched registered human-or non-human genes encoding not only keratinocyte specific genes, but also a variety of functional proteins, the expression of which had not been identified in keratinocytes. Non-matching cDNAs covering 49% of the cDNAs were not homologous even to ESTs from other organs, suggesting that these cDNAs include novel genes expressed in the cells. The large scale sequencing of keratinocyte cDNAs provides a useful molecular source for research into biology and diseases of the skin.

We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate from 8B solar neutrinos based on a 123 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The background-subtracted electron recoil rate, above a 5.5 MeV analysis threshold is 1.49+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.17(syst) events per kton-day. Interpreted as due to a pure electron flavor flux with a 8B neutrino spectrum, this corresponds to a spectrum integrated flux of 2.77+/-0.26(stat)+/-0.32(syst) x 10^6 cm^-2s^-1. The analysis threshold is driven by 208Tl present in the liquid scintillator, and the main source of systematic uncertainty is due to background from cosmogenic 11Be. The measured rate is consistent with existing measurements and with Standard Solar Model predictions which include matter enhanced neutrino oscillation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We present new constraints on the neutrino oscillation parameters $/textyen Delta m^{2}_{21}$, $/textyen theta_{12}$, and $/textyen theta_{13}$ from a three-flavor analysis of solar and KamLAND data. The KamLAND data set includes data acquired following a radiopurity upgrade and amounts to a total exposure of $3.49 \textyen times 10^{32}$ target-proton-year. Under the assumption of {\textyen it CPT} invariance, a two-flavor analysis (/textyen mbox{$\textyen theta_{13} = 0$}) of the KamLAND and solar data yields the best-fit values $\textyen tan^{2} \textyen theta_{12} = 0.444^{+0.036}_{-0.030}$ and $\textyen Delta m^{2}_{21} = 7.50^{+0.19}_{-0.20} \textyen times 10^{-5} ~ {\textyen rm eV}^{2}$; a three-flavor analysis with $\textyen theta_{13}$ as a free parameter yields the best-fit values $\textyen tan^{2} \textyen theta_{12} = 0.452^{+0.035}_{-0.033}$, $\textyen Delta m^{2}_{21} = 7.50^{+0.19}_{-0.20} \textyen times 10^{-5} ~ {\textyen rm eV}^{2}$, and $\textyen sin^{2} \textyen theta_{13} = 0.020^{+0.016}_{-0.016}$. This $\textyen theta_{13}$ interval is consistent with other recent work combining the CHOOZ, atmospheric and long-baseline accelerator experiments. We also present a new global $\textyen theta_{13}$ analysis, incorporating the CHOOZ, atmospheric and accelerator data, which indicates $\textyen sin^{2} \textyen theta_{13} = 0.009^{+0.013}_{-0.007}$. The Earth has cooled since its formation, yet the decay of radiogenic isotopes, and in particular uranium, thorium and potassium, in the planet’s interior provides a continuing heat source. The current total heat flux from the Earth to space is 44:2±1.0 TW, but the relative contributions from residual primordial heat and radiogenic decay remain uncertain. However, radiogenic decay can be estimated from the flux of geoneutrinos, electrically neutral particles that are emitted during radioactive decay and can pass through the Earth virtually unaffected. Here we combine precise measurements of the geoneutrino flux from the Kamioka Liquid-Scintillator Antineutrino Detector, Japan, with existing measurements from the Borexino detector, Italy.We find that decay of uranium-238 and thorium-232 together contribute 20.0^(+8.8)_(-8.6)TW to Earth’s heat flux. The neutrinos emitted from the decay of potassium-40 are below the limits of detection in our experiments, but are known to contribute 4TW. Taken together, our observations indicate that heat from radioactive decay contributes about half of Earth’s total heat flux. We therefore conclude that Earth’s primordial heat supply has not yet been exhausted.

Radioactive isotopes produced through cosmic muon spallation are a background for rare-event detection in $\nu$ detectors, double-$\beta$-decay experiments, and dark-matter searches. Understanding the nature of cosmogenic backgrounds is particularly important for future experiments aiming to determine the pep and CNO solar neutrino fluxes, for which the background is dominated by the spallation production of $^{11}$C. Data from the Kamioka liquid-scintillator antineutrino detector (KamLAND) provides valuable information for better understanding these backgrounds, especially in liquid scintillators, and for checking estimates from current simulations based upon MUSIC, FLUKA, and GEANT4. Using the time correlation between detected muons and neutron captures, the neutron production yield in the KamLAND liquid scintillator is measured to be $(2.8 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-4} \mu^{-1} g^{-1} cm^{2}$. For other isotopes, the production yield is determined from the observed time correlation related to known isotope lifetimes. We find some yields are inconsistent with extrapolations based on an accelerator muon beam experiment., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

We have successfully built and operated a source deployment system for the KamLAND detector. This system was used to position radioactive sources throughout the delicate 1-kton liquid scintillator volume, while meeting stringent material cleanliness, material compatibility, and safety requirements. The calibration data obtained with this device were used to fully characterize detector position and energy reconstruction biases. As a result, the uncertainty in the size of the detector fiducial volume was reduced by a factor of two. Prior to calibration with this system, the fiducial volume was the largest source of systematic uncertainty in measuring the number of anti-neutrinos detected by KamLAND. The KamLAND experiment has determined a precise value for the neutrino oscillation parameter $\Delta m^{2}_{21}$ and stringent constraints on $\theta_{12}$. The exposure to nuclear reactor anti-neutrinos is increased almost fourfold over previous results to 2.44$\times10^{32}$ proton-yr due to longer livetime and an enlarged fiducial volume. An undistorted reactor $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ energy spectrum is now rejected at >5$\sigma$. Extending the analysis down to the inverse beta decay energy threshold, and incorporating geo-neutrinos, gives a best-fit at $\Delta m^{2}_{21}$= $7.58^{+0.14}_{-0.13}(stat)^{+0.15}_{-0.15}(syst)\times10^{-5}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\tan^2 \theta_{12}$=$0.56^{+0.10}_{0.07}(stat)^{+0.10}_{-0.06}(syst)$. Local $\Delta \chi^2$-minima at higher and lower $\Delta m^{2}_{21}$ are disfavored at >4$\sigma$. Combining with solar neutrino data, we obtain $\Delta m^{2}_{21}$= $7.59^{+0.21}_{-0.21}\times10^{-5}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\tan^2 \theta_{12}$=$0.47^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$., Comment: Version as published in PRL. A 69-year-old male was admitted to the hospital for further examination of an abnormal shadow in the right lower lung fields. He was previously under medical treatment for right thoracic empyema. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a solitary mass, 4.5 cm in diameter and broncofiberscopy evidenced a tumor in the right lower bronchus. The biopsy was performed and the tumor was diagnosed as a pleomorphic adenoma. Intraoperativefinding showed the tumor was 6 cm in gross, extended to the left atrium, and a daughter tumor was palpable in the middle lobe. The middle and lower lobe were resected. The tumor was located in S9, S10, 6 x 4 x 3.5 cm in size, 2 daughter tumor was found in the middle lobe, the pulmonary vein was thickened by tumor invasion. Pathohistologically, main tumor and daughter tumor showed malignant feature, were compatible with adenoid cystic cancer. Four years after operation, he is still now alive with home oxygen therapy.

A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for further evaluation of a abnormal shadow in left middle lung field. The patient had undergone right mastectomy for infiltrating ductal carcinoma 19 years ago. She had no symptom, but had a time of mass X-ray screening this year. Chest CT finding showed a nodule 2 cm in diameter with slight irregular margin in S6 of left lung. We couldn't determine preoperatively that this tumor was a metastatic lesion or a primary lung cancer. And first, tumor was taken out for intraoperative frozen section diagnosis. Pathologist didn't diagnose whether this tumor was a metastatic or primary. So, we performed left lower lobectomy and mediastinal lymphadenectomy. On postoperative histopathologic finding lung cancer resembled well previous breast cancer. In immunohistochemical study cancer cells from lung and breast of the patient were respectively positive for anti Estrogen Receptor (ER) and anti Gross Cystic Disease Fluid Protein-15 (GCDFP-15). In conclusion lung cancer was diagnosed as a metastatic lesion from breast cancer 19 years ago. The patient has been well 2 years postoperatively without recurrence. In this case immunohistochemical examination was very useful for differentiation metastatic lesion and primary one.

A 67-year-old man was intubated for one week and suffered from wheeze and dyspnoea three months after the extubation. Bronchoscopy revealed tracheal stenosis by a web, which subsequent biopsy showed to be granulation tissue. The stenosis was removed by laser therapy but the stenosis soon returned. As cardiac function was poor, beclomethasone diproprionate (BDP) inhalation therapy (1200 micrograms daily) was started and proved successful. Discontinuation of inhalation therapy resulted in restenosis. Steroid inhalation therapy may be able to control post-intubation tracheal stenosis caused by granulation tissue.

A 78-year-old female was pointed out an abnormal shadow in left lung field. For 4 years this shadow was followed up as benign tumor. Chest CT scan revealed growing tumor and new tumor in right lung. Tumor resection was performed. Until operation time carcinoid syndrome was not found. This case was diagnosed histopathologically typical carcinoid of peripheral lung.

A 23-year-old man was admitted with a persistent high-grade fever of 20 days duration. Chest roentgenogram showed diffuse miliary shadows in both lung fields, highly suggestive of miliary tuberculosis. Sputum, gastric juice, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid did not, however, reveal acid-fast bacilli on smears. A bone marrow aspirate and a transbronchial lung biopsy were also negative for caseating granulomas and tubercule bacilli. After admission, the high-grade fever remitted in several days without continuous antibiotic, antituberculosis or antipyretic therapy. Levels of inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR, alpha 2-globulin dropped simultaneously. Despite the atypical clinical course, miliary tuberculosis was suspected. We therefore carried out an open lung biopsy. The presence of caseating granulomas and acid-fast bacilli confirmed the diagnosis of miliary tuberculosis. The remission of miliary tuberculosis without treatment is very rare and the details of this case are presented herein with a discussion of the pertinent literature.

Transglutaminase1 (TGase1) gene is expressed at the late stage of terminal differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes. 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) markedly induced the luciferase activity in cultured rat keratinocytes. FRSK cells, transfected with a luciferase reporter plasmid containing the 0.82-kb 5'-flanking region of the human TGase1 gene, but hardly in non-keratinocytic cells. The TPA-induced luciferase activity was suppressed by retinoic acid, 9-cis retinoic acid, and 1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine (H-7). Co-transfection with expression plasmids for c-jun and/or c-fos showed that Jun itself induced the luciferase activity, whereas Fos inhibited both the basal and TPA-induced luciferase activity. These results suggested that the signaling systems including protein kinase C, retinoic acid/retinoid-X receptors, and Jun/Fos regulate the transcription of the TGase1 gene.

It is not certain whether the life expectancy of patients with membranous nephropathy is shorter than that of an age-matched healthy population. Forty-one patients (21 males, 20 females) aged between 16 and 70 years (average age: 33.3 years) were followed for 20 years. The patients were divided into two groups: group I (n = 18), consisting of patients in whom nephrotic syndrome persisted for more than two years or until death, and group II (n = 23), consisting of patients except for group I. The non-survival criteria are death or renal death. Twelve patients (29.3%) died during the study period. Eight patients belonged to group I and 4 to group II. The causes of death in group I patients were end-stage renal failure in 3 cases, ischemic heart disease in 1 case, subarachnoid hemorrhage in 1 case, malignancy in 2 cases, suicide in 1 case, and those in the group II patients were pneumonia, malignancy, cerebral softening, and diabetes mellitus, respectively. Eight patients who died in group I had a significantly longer difference between their actual life span (ALS) and life expectancy (LE) and a significantly smaller ratio of ALS to LE than the patients who died in group II (ALS-LE: -29.9 +/- 4.5 years in group I vs. -9.0 +/- 6.8 years in group II, p0.05, ALS x 100/LE: 22.5 +/- 8.0% in group I vs. 80.9 +/- 25.2% in group II, p0.05). In group I, the ratio of observed to expected death was 4.76 (95% confidence interval, 2.05 to 9.37) and significantly higher than that of the control population. In group II, however, the ratio was 1.09 (95% confidence interval, 0.30 to 2.80), and the difference from the control population was not statistically significant. These results suggest that longstanding nephrotic syndrome is associated with a shortened life expectancy in patients with membranous nephropathy.

We have been distilling the KamLAND liquid scintillator (LS) for the low energy solar neutrino observation. The distillation removes radioactive impurities from LS efficiently. We developed two types of high sensitivity radon detectors to monitor 222Rn contamination which causes a primary background source 210Pb. Their required sensitivity is several mBq/m3. The features and the measurement results of these detectors are presented. We also report the study of liquid scintillator properties after the distillation: attenuation length, light output and PPO density.

The pH-control method usually used in the latest distillation plants has been found unsuitable because of its corrosiveness. In the cases of the pH-control tests, the corrosion rate of a heat-transfer tube was three times or more than that of the untreated operation. An intermittent acid treatment developed recently in our laboratory was also tested, and resulted in the same amount of corrosion as the pH-control method. These results were electrochemically studied tracing the change in the polarization curves of the tube. As a result of these experiments, it was concluded that an extremely low oxygen concentration under 3 ppb must be required to keep down the corrosion rate when using the acid treatments.

The effect of acute denervation of the kidney on renal sodium and water excretion, and hemodynamics including intrarenal blood flow, was studied in anesthetized dogs. The intrarenal blood flow was measured by the radioactive microsphere method. In all experiments denervation natriuresis and diuresis was observed without significant change in glomerular filtration rate, renal blood flow and distribution of intrarenal blood flow. There was, however, an associated increase in potassium excretion. We suggest that denervation natriuresis and diuresis may be caused by the elimination of a direct nervous control of sodium and water reabsorption.
