The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and test bed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the x-ray Free-Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including a transverse deflecting rf cavity. It delivered electron bunches of up to 200 pC charge and up to 250 MeV beam energy at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The measurements performed at the test facility not only demonstrated the beam parameters required to drive the first stage of an FEL facility, but also led to significant advances in instrumentation technologies, beam characterization methods and the generation, transport and compression of ultralow-emittance beams. We give a comprehensive overview of the commissioning experience of the principal subsystems and the beam physics measurements performed during the operation of the test facility, including the results of the test of an in-vacuum undulator prototype generating radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet and optical range.

High brightness electron sources for linac based free-electron lasers (FELs) are being developed at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ). Production of electron bunches with extremely small transverse emittance is the focus of the PITZ scientific program. The photoinjector optimization in 2008–2009 for a bunch charge of 1, 0.5, 0.25, and 0.1 nC resulted in measured emittance values which are beyond the requirements of the European XFEL [S. Rimjaem et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res., Sect. A 671, 62 (2012)NIMAER0168-900210.1016/j.nima.2011.12.101]. Several essential modifications were commissioned in 2010–2011 at PITZ, resulting in further improvement of the photoinjector performance. Significant improvement of the rf gun phase stability is a major contribution in the reduction of the measured transverse emittance. The old TESLA prototype booster was replaced by a new cut disk structure cavity. This allows acceleration of the electron beam to higher energies and supports much higher flexibility for stable booster operation as well as for longer rf pulses which is of vital importance especially for the emittance optimization of low charge bunches. The transverse phase space of the electron beam was optimized at PITZ for bunch charges in the range between 0.02 and 2 nC, where the quality of the beam measurements was preserved by utilizing long pulse train operation. The experimental optimization yielded worldwide unprecedented low normalized emittance beams in the whole charge range studied.

The photoinjector test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ), was built to develop and optimize photoelectron sources for superconducting linacs for high-brilliance, short-wavelength free-electron laser (FEL) applications like the free-electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH) and the European x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). In this paper, the detailed characterization of two laser-driven rf guns with different operating conditions is described. One experimental optimization of the beam parameters was performed at an accelerating gradient of about 43 MV/m at the photocathode and the other at about 60 MV/m. In both cases, electron beams with very high phase-space density have been demonstrated at a bunch charge of 1 nC and are compared with corresponding simulations. The rf gun optimized for the lower gradient has surpassed all the FLASH requirements on beam quality and rf parameters (gradient, rf pulse length, repetition rate) and serves as a spare gun for this facility. The rf gun studied with increased accelerating gradient at the cathode produced beams with even higher brightness, yielding the first demonstration of the beam quality required for driving the European XFEL: The geometric mean of the normalized projected rms emittance in the two transverse directions was measured to be 1.26±0.13 mm mrad for a 1-nC electron bunch. When a 10% charge cut is applied excluding electrons from those phase-space regions where the measured phase-space density is below a certain level and which are not expected to contribute to the lasing process, the normalized projected rms emittance is about 0.9 mm mrad.

The magnesium alloy ZK60 is a promising candidate as a material for biodegradable implants. One of the most important factors for biodegradable implants is the modification of their corrosion behavior to match the requirements for the healing bone or tissue. The corrosion behavior can be influenced by different factors, among them the grain size, which can be changed by severe plastic deformation processes such as High Pressure Torsion Extrusion (HPTE). This study focuses on the corrosion behavior of samples of pure magnesium and ZK60 before and after HPTE, and the influence of the microstructure on the corrosion activity. The samples are subjected to immersion tests in phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS). The corrosion activity is defined by the emerging hydrogen volume from the corrosion process which is collected and by subsequently observing the resulting sample surfaces. The findings of this study suggest that pure magnesium shows lower corrosion activities than ZK60 and that HPTE processing leads to higher corrosion activities in PBS.

There is a growing trend toward the use of interaction network methods and algorithms, including community-based detection methods, in various fields of science. The approach is already used in many applications, for example, in social sciences and health informatics to analyze behavioral patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic, protein-protein networks in biological sciences, agricultural science, economy, and so forth. This paper attempts to build interaction networks based on high-entropy alloy (HEA) descriptors in order to discover HEA communities with similar functionality. In addition, these communities could be leveraged to discover new alloys not yet included in the data set without any experimental laboratory effort. This research has been carried out using two community detection algorithms, the Louvain algorithm and the enhanced particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The data set, which is used in this paper, includes 90 HEAs and 6 descriptors. The results reveal 13 alloy communities, and the accuracy of the results is validated by the modularity. The experimental results show that the method with the PSO-based community detection algorithm can achieve alloy communities with an average accuracy improvement of 0.26 compared to the Louvain algorithm. Furthermore, some characteristics of HEAs, for example, their phase composition, could be predicted by the extracted communities. The prospective applications of metallic glasses are limited by their lack of ductility, attributed to shear banding inducing catastrophic failure. A concise depiction of the local atomic arrangement (local atomic packing and chemical short-range order), induced by shear banding, is quintessential to understand the deformation mechanism, however still not clear. An explicit view of the complex interplay of local atomic structure and chemical environment is presented by mapping the atomic arrangements in shear bands (SBs) and in their vicinity in a deformed Vitreloy 105 metallic glass, using the scanning electron diffraction pair distribution function and atom probe tomography. The results experimentally prove that plastic deformation causes a reduction of geometrically favored polyhedral motifs. Localized motifs variations and antisymmetric (bond and chemical) segregation extend for several hundred nanometers from the SB, forming the shear band affected zones. Moreover, the variations within the SB are found both perpendicular and parallel to the SB plane, also observable in the oxidation activity. The knowledge of the structural-chemical changes provides a deeper understanding of the plastic deformation of metallic glasses especially for their functional applications and future improvements., (© 2021 The Authors. The microstructure and microhardness evolution of a Ti-15(wt.%)Mo/TiB metal-matrix composite (MMC) during high-pressure torsion (HPT) at 400 °C was studied. The composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering of a Ti, Mo and TiB₂ powders mixture at 1200 °C. In the initial condition, the structure of the composite consisted mainly of body-centered cubic (bcc) Ti solid solution and TiB whiskers. An increase in dislocation density, a considerable decrease in a grain size in the bcc Ti matrix, and breaking/rearrangement of the TiB whiskers were observed during HPT. The (sub)grain size in the bcc Ti matrix attained after 1 revolution was ~75 nm and then gradually decreased to ~55 nm after 5 revolutions. The TiB particle sizes after 5 revolutions was found to be 130⁻210 nm. The microhardness increased with strain from 575 HV in the initial state to 730 HV after 5 revolutions. Various hardening mechanisms' contributions in the Ti-15Mo/TiB were evaluated.

By analyzing the problem of high pressure torsion (HPT) in the rigid plastic formulation, we show that the power hardening law of plastically deformed materials leads to self-similarity of HPT, admitting a simple mathematical description of the process. The analysis shows that the main parameters of HPT are proportional to β q , with β being the angle of the anvil rotation. The meaning of the parameter q is: q = 0 for velocity and strain rate, q = 1 for shear strain and von Mises strain, q = n for stress, pressure and torque ( n is the exponent of a power hardening law). We conclude that if the hardening law is a power law in a rotation interval β, self-similar regimes can emerge in HPT if the friction with the lateral wall of the die is not too high. In these intervals a simple mathematical description can be applied based on self-similarity. Outside these ranges, the plasticity problem still has to be solved for each value of β. The results obtained have important practical implications for the proper design and analysis of HPT experiments.

Equal channel angular pressing results in ultrafine-grained (approximately 200-500 nm) Ti with superior mechanical properties without harmful alloying elements, which benefits medical implants. To further improve the bioactivity of Ti surfaces, Ca/P-containing porous titania coatings were prepared on ultrafine-grained and coarse-grained Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). The phase identification, composition, morphology and microstructure of the coatings and the thermal stability of ultrafine-grained Ti during MAO were investigated subsequently. The amounts of Ca, P and the Ca/P ratio of the coatings formed on ultrafine-grained Ti were greater than those on coarse-grained Ti. Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite and alpha-Ca(3)(PO(4))(2) phases appeared in the MAO coating formed on ultrafine-grained Ti for 20 min (E20). Incubated in a simulated body fluid, bone-like apatite was completely formed on the surface of E20 after 2 days, thus evidencing preferable bioactivity. Compared with initial ultrafine-grained Ti, the microhardness of the E20 substrate was reduced by 8% to 2.9 GPa, which is considerably more than that of coarse-grained Ti (approximately 1.5 GPa)., (Copyright 2010 Acta Materialia Inc.
