1. POTENTIAL GEOLOGIC ISSUES OF VON KÁRMÁN CRATER REVEALED BY MULTISOURCE REMOTE SENSING DATA

Abstract: Von Kármán crater is the landing area for CE-4 mission, which provides a chance to further study the evolution of South-Pole Aitken basin. In this paper, the topography, composition, temperature and deep structures of Von Kármán crater are systematically studied with LRO LOLA data, Clementine UV-VIS data, CE-2 CELMS data, and GRAIL data. Several potential geologic issues are postulated as follows: (1) There exists a difference for the southern and northern parts of the crater floor in topography. The surface topography is influenced by Leibnitz and Finsen events. (2) There exists an FTA-rich material in depth layer of the crater floor, and the later bombardments exposed the original material in the crater floor. And the material in depth is homogeneous. (3) The composition apparently changes with depth, and there exist a warm anomaly in the northern part of the crater floor and a cold anomaly in the southern part. (4) A large amount of magma has been uplifted after Von Kármán M impact event, and the crust has been melted several times and condensed into dense basalt layer. Generally, this is a good place to measure the material from the original SPA basin and the material from the depth layer of the Moon for the CE-4 landing site.

2. On the Performance of Wavy Dry Friction and Piezoelectric Hybrid Flexible Dampers

Abstract: This paper proposes a flexible dry friction plate to mitigate the vibration of thin-walled structures for one resonance crossing. Based on a cantilever beam–friction damper finite element model, the geometry and material parameters of the friction plate are optimized numerically through steady-state response analyses by the widely used multiharmonic balance method (MHBM). In order to further improve the damping effect, piezoelectric material is distributed to the flexible damper, and two types of dry friction and piezoelectric hybrid dampers are explored, namely, semi-active and passive, respectively. For semi-active hybrid dampers, piezoelectric material is used as an actuator to adjust the normal load applied to the friction interface in real-time, so that the friction damping is improved. For passive ones, piezoelectric material is used as a transducer, which dissipates the strain energy stored in the wavy plate by the shunting circuit, additional shunted piezoelectric damping contributes to the total output damping accordingly. Better damping effect compared with the friction baseline is realized for the two types ideally. This damping module has a simple structure and avoids the problem of installation and maintenance of piezoelectric material which is generally bonded to the host structure. Technical challenges are the semi-active type requires excessive voltage applied to the piezoelectric actuator, while the passive one needs to connect a programable synthetic circuit.

4. Topological Optimization of Piezoelectric Transducers for Vibration Reduction of Bladed Disks

Abstract: In this work, we develop a numerical method to determine the best distribution of piezoelectric materials on a given bladed disk, so as to minimize the added mass of shunted piezoelectric dampers. There is no constrain on the shape of piezoelectric materials, and only the overall mass is limited. The method can be applied to a single mode or several modes from the same or different modal groups. The method is based on the fact that the modal damping is solely determined by the modal electromechanical coupling factor (MEMCF) which is related to the modal stress field and the geometric of the piezoelectric materials only. A linear weighting of stress components is proposed as the criterion to determine the priority of locations for piezoelectric materials. The piezoelectric materials are introduced to the FE model by modifying the type and materials parameters of elements if they are embedded to the bladed disks; or by creating an additional layers of elements if they are bonded to the bladed disks. Details for considering multiple modes, handling polarization direction and electrode connection are also presented. The proposed procedure is applied to an empirical bladed disk with NASA-ROTOR37 profile. Results show that 12% damping ratio can be achieved for multiple modes simultaneously, if we locate piezoelectric materials on the blade with 10% added mass. When locate the piezoelectric materials on the disk and the added mass is only 5%, up to 13% modal damping ratio for the disk dominant modes can be achieved.

Abstract: Synchronized Switch Damping (SSD) is a semi-active damping technology based on piezoelectric materials. It has advantages such as broadband and no need to tune. Despite the nonlinear governing equations, structures with SSD exhibit quasi-linear behaviour such as the resonant frequencies hardly vary with respect to energy level of excitation. Inspired by these phenomena, in this paper we propose a linearisation method for SSD, where the nonlinear force is equivalent to frequency-dependent viscous damping and linear stiffness coefficients. Closed-form expressions of these linearised parameters are given, making the method applicable both for lumped parameter models and finite element (FE) models. In the derivation a general force equation is used, so the linearised method is applicable for several typical variants of SSD, such as SSDS (S for 'on short-circuited'), SSDI (I for `on inductance'), SSDV (V for `on voltage') and SSDNC (NC for `on negative capacitance'). The method is first validated against nonlinear simulations with harmonic and random vibration respectively, then further compared with experimental data in a published paper. Good agreements are found. We show that the proposed method can dramatically accelerate the computational efficiency, which is especially suitable for predicting the dynamic performance of complex structures with SSD. Eventually, a dummy integrally bladed disk with SSD is analysed to illustrate a potential application direction. There are more than 120k DOFs in the FE model, making full nonlinear simulation very time-consuming. However the simulation is finished within seconds by the proposed method and the typical damping characteristics of SSD are well captured.

8. Paracrine factors of mesenchymal stem cells recruit macrophages and endothelial lineage cells and enhance wound healing.

Abstract: Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have been shown to enhance wound healing; however, the mechanisms involved are barely understood. In this study, we examined paracrine factors released by BM-MSCs and their effects on the cells participating in wound healing compared to those released by dermal fibroblasts. Analyses of BM-MSCs with Real-Time PCR and of BM-MSC-conditioned medium by antibody-based protein array and ELISA indicated that BM-MSCs secreted distinctively different cytokines and chemokines, such as greater amounts of VEGF-alpha, IGF-1, EGF, keratinocyte growth factor, angiopoietin-1, stromal derived factor-1, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha and beta and erythropoietin, compared to dermal fibroblasts. These molecules are known to be important in normal wound healing. BM-MSC-conditioned medium significantly enhanced migration of macrophages, keratinocytes and endothelial cells and proliferation of keratinocytes and endothelial cells compared to fibroblast-conditioned medium. Moreover, in a mouse model of excisional wound healing, where concentrated BM-MSC-conditioned medium was applied, accelerated wound healing occurred compared to administration of pre-conditioned or fibroblast-conditioned medium. Analysis of cell suspensions derived from the wound by FACS showed that wounds treated with BM-MSC-conditioned medium had increased proportions of CD4/80-positive macrophages and Flk-1-, CD34- or c-kit-positive endothelial (progenitor) cells compared to wounds treated with pre-conditioned medium or fibroblast-conditioned medium. Consistent with the above findings, immunohistochemical analysis of wound sections showed that wounds treated with BM-MSC-conditioned medium had increased abundance of macrophages. Our results suggest that factors released by BM-MSCs recruit macrophages and endothelial lineage cells into the wound thus enhancing wound healing.

9. An extended layerwise/solid-element method of stiffened composite plates with delaminations and transverse crack

Abstract: The stiffened composite plates with the transverse crack and delamination were studied in this paper, and an extended layerwise/solid-element (XLW/SE) method was developed. In the proposed method, the governing equations of composite plates and stiffeners were established based on the extended layerwise method and 3D solid elements, respectively. The final governing equation of stiffened composite plates is assembled by using the compatibility conditions and internal force equilibrium conditions at the joint interface between the plates and stiffeners. For the stiffened composite plates with damages, the XLW/SE method can obtain the local stress and displacement fields accurately and simulate the in-plane transverse cracks and delaminations simultaneously, considering complicated stiffeners without any assumptions. In the numerical examples, the results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the 3D elastic models developed in the general finite element code, and the good agreements were achieved for the stiffened composite plates with/without delaminations and/or transverse crack.

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to determine whether SIRT3 could retard intervertebral disc degeneration and study the mechanism.We chose the 3-month mice to establish intervertebral disc degeneration model and study the effect of SIRT3 on the intervertebral disc by Western blotting, quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR), immunohistochemistry. Mouse nucleus pulposus cells were cultured to study the exact mechanism.The expression of SIRT3 was decreased in degenerated human nucleus pulposus. Intervertebral discs of mice treated with theacrine expressed more collagen II and less collagen X. In addition, nucleus pulposus cells stimulated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β) expressed less SIRT3 than that in the control group and nucleus pulposus cells with SIRT3 overexpress vectors expressed more collagen II FOXO3a and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), indicating that SIRT3 could improve the intervertebral disc degeneration by anti-oxidative stress.SIRT3 is a protective factor for intervertebral discs and can reduce oxidative stress in the intervertebral disc.

Abstract: This paper proposes a wave-like hybrid damper containing both dry friction and piezoelectric damping mechanisms for thin-walled structures. The idea is to distribute piezoelectric material on the wave-like friction plate, so that the elastic deformation of the plate can be further utilized to generate additional shunted piezoelectric damping. The proposed damper has the following advantages: simple structure, easy installation and maintenance, convenient to adjust the normal preload, and feasible to mount piezoelectric materials. Combined with damped nonlinear normal modes (dNNMs), the nonlinear modal electromechanical coupling factor (nonlinear MEMCF) is proposed, and its relationship with piezoelectric damping is established for electromechanically coupled systems with contact nonlinearities. Based on the extended periodic motion concept (E-PMC) of dNNMs for non-conservative systems, the preliminary design guidelines of wave-like hybrid dampers are given through nonlinear modal analyses. The modal damping ratio and the nonlinear MEMCF are used to evaluate the damping generated by friction and piezoelectric mechanisms, respectively. The damping effect is also verified by steady-state response analyses through the Multi-Harmonic Balance Method (MHBM). By using a cantilever beam finite element (FE) model, the spatial distribution of piezoelectric material is optimized for a single wave-like hybrid damper. Four optimized hybrid dampers are then implemented to an industrial thin-walled structure. Taking the normal preload as an example, the influence of parameter distribution patterns at different interfaces on the damping effect is also discussed. Compared with the underlying friction damper, the wave-like hybrid damper not only provides greater damping, but is also less sensitive to the variation of excitation amplitude and the normal preload. Whether friction or piezoelectric damping is inactive, the proposed damper can still generate considerable damping.

12. Design of dry friction dampers for thin-walled structures by an accelerated dynamic Lagrange method

Abstract: The low inherent damping for thin-walled structures often leads to prominent vibrational problem. This paper proposes a friction patch to enhance the damping for thin-walled structures. The damping patch is simple in structure and easy to adjust the normal preload. Based on a beam finite element model, parameters including geometry, stiffness and position of the proposed damper are optimized numerically. The steady-state response of the system is calculated by the DLFT in the frequency domain efficiently with high accuracy. The damping performance of the friction patch is quantified by the resonant amplitude for the target mode. The design guidelines summarized from numerical simulation are experimentally verified through a cantilever beam. Four optimized friction patches are implemented to a complex industrial thin-walled structure. Results show that the well-designed friction patches provide over 40% vibration reduction with less than 0.83% additional mass of the host structure for different modes.

13. Feasibility Research on Coupled Friction/Piezoelectric Dampers

Abstract: A new passive damper coupling the energy dissipative mechanisms of dry friction and piezoelectric shunting circuit is proposed. The idea is to embed the shunted piezoelectric materials to the dry friction dampers at appropriate positions, so that the elastic deformation of the dry friction dampers can be utilized to generate additional damping. Moreover, this provides a more practical way to install the piezoelectric dampers into realistic mechanical systems such as aero-engines. A five Degree-of-freedom (DOFs) lumped system model is introduced to demonstrate the feasibility of such an idea. The damping performance is revealed using the forced response results obtained by the Multi Harmonic Balance Method (MHBM). We show that the coupled damper significantly outperforms the standalone piezoelectric or dry friction dampers. The coupled damper is better than, at least equivalent to, the case where both piezoelectric and dry friction dampers are applied but in uncoupled manner. Eventually, the mechanism of the proposed damper is further explained from the perspective of vibrational mode and energy conversion.

14. Sensitivity Analysis and Design of an Open-Loop Active Normal Force for Dry Friction Dampers

Abstract: In this paper we design an open-loop active normal force for dry friction dampers, aiming to enhance the damping effect. The active normal force is composed of a constant term plus a time-varying term with zero mean value. The constant term is the best constant normal force that minimizes the forced response in the resonant frequency band. The time-varying force can be expressed by the Fourier Series and here we assume that it is composed of four harmonics with respect to the excitation frequency. Overall eight unknown parameters are therefore to be determined, namely the combination coefficients of the fours harmonics and phase differences between them. First, the global sensitivity of these parameters with respect to the forced response are analysed, in order to select the most significant parameters and to eliminate the unimportant ones. To do that the Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test (FAST) is performed based on the Lumped Parameter Model, where the forced response of is calculated by the Multi-Harmonic Balance Method (MHBM) combined with Alternating Frequency/Time domain (AFT). The arc-length continuation technique is used to improve the convergence. We found that the interaction between the amplitude and phase of the second harmonic significantly impacts the forced response around resonance frequencies. Then only these two parameters are considered to minimize the forced response in the frequency band, rather than considering all eight parameters. Results show that a further 25% reduction of the response peak can be achieved by the designed time-varying normal force in comparison with the best constant normal force. The proposed design process is applicable for any dry friction dampers if it is possible to impose an open-loop active normal force.

Abstract: Human influenza viruses are major concern as the leading cause of global pandemics. In infecting cells, they preferentially bind to sialyloligosaccharides containing terminal N-acetyl sialic acid linked to galactose by an α-2,6-linkage (NeuAcα2,6Gal). The amount of NeuAcα2,6Gal in Vero cells, which are predominantly used for production of influenza vaccines over the past 30 years, may not be as high as that in epithelial cells of human respiratory tract, what leads to the suboptimal virus growth in Vero cells. In this study, we stably transfected Vero cells with cDNA of human α-2,6-sialyltransferase (SIAT1), an enzyme catalyzing α-2,6-sialylation of galactose on glycoproteins. Overexpression of SIAT1 in the transfected Vero cells (Vero-SIAT1 cells) was confirmed by Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence microscopy. Vero-SIAT1 cells expressed 7 times higher amounts of NeuAcα2,6Gal, but 3 times lower amounts of NeuAcα2,3Gal as compared to parental Vero cells. Furthermore, the influenza viruses A (H1N1 and H3N2) and B grew in Vero-SIAT1 cells to the higher titers than in Vero cells. Taken together, these results imply that Vero-SIAT1 cells are useful not only for the propagation of human influenza viruses, but also for the preparation of influenza vaccines.

Abstract: Experimental evidence has been presented to suggest that the human augmenter of liver regeneration (hALR) serves as a hepatotrophic growth factor during liver regeneration and as a generalized growth factor during pancreas transplant/regeneration. A prokaryotic expression plasmid, pRSET/6his-c-myc-hALR was constructed, by cloning synthesized hALR cDNA into pRSET/6his-c-myc that was improved on the basis of pRSET B by the group. As a result, the protein was highly expressed in E. coli BL21. The recombinant hALR was over 60% of the total protein in E. coli. Its validity was confirmed by means of Western Blotting. The protein was purified by Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and this FAD-dependent sulfhydryl oxidase activity was measured.

Abstract: Using the upgraded Beijing Spectrometer, we have measured the total cross section for e(+)e(-) annihilation into hadronic final states at center-of-mass energies of 2.6, 3.2, 3.4, 3.55, 4.6, and 5.0 GeV. Values of R, sigma(e(+)e(-)-->hadrons)/sigma(e(+)e(-)-->m(+)m(-)), are determined.

Abstract: An end-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser fiber-coupled diode was designed. A maximum output power of 4.74 W TEM00 mode CW laser was obtained for a pump power of 10.5 W. The optical efficiency and slope efficiency were measured as 45.1 and 57.8% at 1064 nm, respectively. Abstract: A sample of 3.79 million psi(2S) decays observed in the BES detector is used to study the decays of charmonium to axialvector plus pseudoscalar mesons. The branching fraction for psi(2S) to b1pi agrees with expectations. Abstract: A partial wave analysis of BES J / ψ → γ ( ηπ + π − ) data has been performed in the mass region 1.1 to 2.0 GeV. A peak is observed due to η (1440) in the ηπ + π − invariant mass distribution; J P =0 − is preferred over 1 + . Its mass is M =1385±7 MeV and it decays into both ησ and a 0 (980) π , with BR[ a 0 (980) π , a 0 → ηπ / ησ ]=0.70±0.12( stat )±0.20( syst ). Destructive interference between the two decay modes is observed. In addition, in the higher ηπ + π − mass region, there is a definite 2 −+ signal, with M =1840±15 MeV and Γ =170±40 MeV and an additional 0 −+ signal at 1760±35 MeV. We also find a possible contribution from a 1 ++ signal decaying dominantly through a 0 (980) π ; its mass and width are fitted to be M =1505±20 MeV and Γ =130 −20 +50 MeV.

We determine upper limits on branching fractions for ψ(2S) decays into ωf2, ρa2, K*0K*02 + c.c., and φf'2(1525) that are, in each case, significantly smaller than the corresponding branching fractions for the J/ψ meson, scaled according to the expectations of perturbative QCD. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

We determine the total width of the χc0 to be γtotχc0 = 14.3 ± 2.0 ± 3.0 MeV. We present the first measurement of the branching fraction B(χc0 → pp¯) = (15.9 ± 4.3 ± 5.3) × 10−5, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. Branching fractions of χc0, 2 → π+ π− and K+ K− are also reported. © 1998 American Physical Society.

Abstract: With 7.8 million produced J / ψ events collected by the BES detector at the BEPC, decays J/ψ→Λ Λ ,Λ Λ γ and Λ Λ π 0 are analysed. The branching ratios are measured to be Br (J/ψ→Λ Λ )=(1.08±0.06±0.24)×10 −3 , Br (J/ψ→Λ Λ γ) −4 (90% C.L. ) , Br (J/ψ→Λ Λ π 0 )=(2.3±0.7±0.8)×10 −4 , respectively. The angular distribution for J/ψ→Λ Λ is of the form d N d cos θ =N 0 (1+α cos 2 θ) , from which we determine α =0.52±0.33±0.13.

Abstract: A search is performed for the production of the ψ(2S) in e^+e^- annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV using the BES detector operated at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). The kinematic features of the reconstructed ψ(2S) signal are consistent with its being produced only in association with an energetic photon resulting from initial state radiation (ISR). Limits are placed on ψ(2S) production from the decay of unknown charmonia or metastable hybrids that might be produced in e^+e^- annihilations at 4.03 GeV. Under the assumption that the observed cross section for ψ(2S) production is due entirely to ISR, the partial width Γ_(ee) of the ψ(2S) is measured to be 2.07±0.32keV.

Abstract: Agriculture non-point source pollution has attracted many scientists to study but no control techniques are completely effective. This is primarily because there are three defects in development and application of these techniques: lack of systematical combination of various control techniques along a water-flowing ecological process; different objectives in management of agriculture watershed for farmers and ecologists; nutrient elements in waste water and solid waste no fully cycled and used in agricultural production. Based on analysis of these problems, new control techniques on watershed scales were experimented to establish a complete technical system controlling the non-point source pollution. These techniques included three grades of wastewater treatment with lower costs and high suitability to villages along wastewater flows, solid waste treatment with cycling modes, decreasing-amount fertilization techniques used in croplands, and contour living hedgerow plantation and management. Results showed that integral combinations of these techniques on watershed scales significantly reduced non-point source pollution.

Abstract: We have measured the total and differential cross sections of the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) at center-of-mass energies around 91 GeV, with an integrated luminosity of 14.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with QED predictions. We set lower limits, at 95% confidence level, on the QED cutoff parameters of Λ+ > 139 GeV, Λ− > 108 GeV and on the mass of an excited electron of m e∗ > 127 GeV . We searched for Z0 rare decays with photonic signitures in the final state. Upper limits, at 95% confidence level, for branching ratio of Z0 decaying into π0γ/γγ, νγ and γγγ are 1.2 × 10−4, 1.8 × 10−4, 3.3 × 10−5 respectively.

Abstract: We present a cellular type oscillatory neural network for temporal pattern segmentation. The model comprises an array of locally connected neural oscillators with connections limited to a 4-connected neighborhood. By means of a novel learning rule and an initialization scheme, global synchronization can be accomplished without incurring any erroneous synchrony among uncorrelated objects. Most importantly, we do not need any global connections to and from other neural oscillators. It is shown in the paper that global synchronization and desynchronization can be achieved by means of locally connected synapses.

Abstract: Inclusive J production in Z0 decays is observed via the leptonic decay mode J → l+l− (l = e,μ). We measure the branching ratio Br(Z0 → J + X) = (4.1 ± 0.7 (stat.) ± 0.3 (sys.)) × 10−3. We have calculated the fraction of the J mesons from b-hadron decay and find a branching ratio of Br(b → J + X)= (1.3±0.2(stat.)±0.2(sys.)) × 10−2. We determine the average fractional energy of bottom hadrons 〈XE > = 0.70±0.03 (stat.)+0.02−0.01 (sys.) using the momentum spectrum of the J mesons. From a study of the angle between the J and the most energetic jet, we set an upper limit on the branching ratio Br ( Z 0 → q q g ∗ ; g ∗ → J + X ) −4 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Radiative decays of the radially excited charmonium resonance, \psi(2S), into \pi\pi, K Kbar and \eta\eta final states have been measured in a sample of 3.96 * 10^6 \psi(2S) events collected by the BES collaboration. The branching ratios B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_{2}(1270)) = (2.27 +- 0.26 +- 0.39) * 10^{-4} and B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma f_0(1710)) * B(f_0(1710) -> K^+ K^-) = (5.59 +- 1.12 +- 0.93) * 10^{-5} are obtained. When compared to the corresponding radiative J/\psi decays, the observed \psi(2S) radiative decay rates into \gamma f_2(1270) and \gamma f_0(1710) are consistent with the 15% rule., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: In a sample of 7.8 million J/{psi} decays collected in the Beijing Spectrometer, the process J/{psi}{yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} is observed for five different {eta}{sub c} decay channels: K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, K{sup {+-}}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}} (with K{sub S}{sup 0}{yields}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), {phi}{phi} (with {phi}{yields}K{sup +}K{sup -}) and K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}. From these signals, we determine the mass of {eta}{sub c} to be 2976.6{+-}2.9{+-}1.3 MeV. Combining this result with a previously reported result from a similar study using {psi}(2S){yields}{gamma}{eta}{sub c} detected in the same spectrometer gives m{sub {eta}{sub c}}=2976.3{+-}2.3{+-}1.2 MeV. For the combined samples, we obtain {gamma}{sub {eta}{sub c}}=11.0{+-}8.1{+-}4.1 MeV. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: A sample of 3.95M $\psi(2S)$ decays registered in the BES detector are used to study final states containing pairs of octet and decuplet baryons. We report branching fractions for $\psi(2S)\to p\bar{p}$, $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Sigma^0\bar{\Sigma}{}^0$, $\Xi^-\bar{\Xi}{}^+$, $\Delta^{++}\bar{\Delta}{}^{--}$, $\Sigma^+(1385)\bar{\Sigma}{}^-(1385)$, $\Xi^0(1530)\bar{\Xi}{}^0(1530)$, and $\Omega^-\bar{\Omega}{}^+$. These results are compared to expectations based on the SU(3)-flavor symmetry, factorization, and perturbative QCD., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables

The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A recoil charge method is applied to charm threshold data to determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from (Formula presented) reconstructed (Formula presented) (Formula presented) mesons. The branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are determined from 10 events with a reconstructed D and a recoiling (Formula presented) In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit of (Formula presented) is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of the (Formula presented) © 2000 The American Physical Society.

The angular distributions are compared with the general decay amplitude analysis of Cahn. We find that the dipion system requires some D wave amplitude, as well as S wave. On the other hand, the (Formula presented) relative angular momentum is consistent with being pure S wave. The decay distributions have been fit to heavy quarkonium models, including the Novikov-Shifman model. This model, which is written in terms of the parameter (Formula presented) predicts that D wave pions should be present. We determine (Formula presented) based on the joint (Formula presented) distribution. The fraction of D wave amplitude as a function of (Formula presented) is found to decrease with increasing (Formula presented) in agreement with the model. We have also fit the Mannel-Yan model, which is another model that allows D wave pions. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The cross section for charmed meson production at $\sqrt{s} = 4.03 $ and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 $pb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 $pb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. Abstract: Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states \chi_cJ (J=0,1,2) are studied using a sample of \psi(2S) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Branching fractions for the decays \chi_c1 going to K_s^0 K^+ \pi^- + c.c., \chi_c0 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c2 going to K_s^0 K_s^0, \chi_c0 going to \phi \phi, \chi_c2 going to \phi \phi and \chi_cJ going to K^+ K^- K^+ K^- are measured for the first time, and those for \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-, $ \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- K^+ K^-, \chi_cJ going to \pi^+ \pi^- p \bar{p} and \chi_cJ going to 3(\pi^+ \pi^-) are measured with improved precision. In addition, we determine the masses of the \chi_c0 and \eta_c to be M_{\chi_{c0}}=3414.1 \pm 0.6(stat) \pm 0.8 (sys) MeV and M_{\eta_c}=2975.8 \pm 3.9(stat) \pm 1.2 (sys) MeV., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, use revtex, submitted to Phys. Abstract: A comparison of the rates for {psi}(2S){r_arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}J/{psi}, J/{psi}{r_arrow}l{sup +}l{sup {minus}} and J/{psi}{r_arrow} anything is used to determine the J/{psi} leptonic branching fractions. The results are B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}})=(5.90{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.10){percent} and B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}})=(5.84{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.10){percent}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Assuming lepton universality, the leptonic branching fraction of the J/{psi} is B(J/{psi}{r_arrow}l{sup +}l{sup {minus}})=(5.87{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.09){percent} per species. Abstract: We report the first measurements of the branching fractions: $B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma \eta') = (1.54 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.23) x 10^{-4}$ and $B(\psi(2S) -> \gamma \eta) = (0.53 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.08) x 10^{-4}$. The $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta'$ result is consistent with expectations of a model that considers the possibility of $\eta' - \eta$ mixing. The ratio of the $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta'$ and $\psi(2S)$ to $\gamma \eta$ rates is used to determine the pseudoscalar octet-singlet mixing angle.
