1. Design and operation of a field telescope for cosmic ray geophysical tomography

Abstract: The cosmic ray muon tomography gives an access to the density structure of geological targets. In the present article we describe a muon telescope adapted to harsh environmental conditions. In particular the design optimizes the total weight and power consumption to ease the deployment and increase the autonomy of the detector. The muon telescopes consist of at least two scintillator detection matrices readout by photosensors via optical fibres. Two photosensor options have been studied. The baseline option foresees one multianode photomultiplier (MAPM) per matrix. A second option using one multipixel photon counter (MPPC) per bar is under development. The readout electronics and data acquisition system developed for both options are detailed. We present a first data set acquired in open-sky conditions compared with the muon flux detected across geological objects.

Abstract: Dimuon and trimuon events produced by the interaction of 250 GeV muons in an iron target have been studied and are shown to originate predominantly from charm production. The data are used to measure the contribution of charm to the nucleon structure function F 2 . The cross sections for real photoproduction ( Q 2 =0) of charm in the current fragmentation region are derived as a function of photon energy and are found to be ∼0.6% of the total, hadronic photoproduction cross section in this energy range. The measured cross sections are found to be well represented by the photon-gluon fusion model. The charmed quark fragmentation function is obtained by using this model to fit the measured decay muon energy distribution and is found to be well represented by exp(1.6±1.6) Z . The data are used to study the momentum distribution of the gluons in the nucleon. An upper limit of 1.4% (90% confidence level) is set on the branching ratio D→ μν and a model-dependent upper limit on the branching ratio F→ μν is derived.

Abstract: The inclusive yield of photons has been measured from deep inelastic interactions of 200 GeV muons on hydrogen. After subtracting the contributions from hadron electromagnetic decays and Bethe-Heitler muon bremsstrahlung, residual photons are observed at low pT and low z at a mean level of 0.15±0.06 per interaction. The quark Compton scattering process is unable to explain the data, thus indicating an anomalous photon production. © 1989.

Abstract: Measurements are presented of the distributions in scaled energy of the hadrons produced in high energy muon scattering. The observed dependence on x (non-factorisation) and Q 2 (scaling violation) is similar to that expected from next to leading order QCD calculations. These variations in the data can be equivalently represented by a dependence on the single variable W 2 .

Abstract: A QCD analysis in leading and next to leading order of the structure function F 2 measured in deep inelastic muon nucleon scattering is presented. Taking into account several phenomenological uncertainties, including the gluon description and the charm contribution, fits to the data give values of the QCD scale parameter Λ LO in the range 7-–250 MeV. A consistent description of muon scattering and lower Q 2 electron scattering requires the presence of higher twist 1/ Q 2 contributions to the scale breaking which are then determined as a function of x from the data.

Abstract: A search was made at the CERN SPS for long-lived fractionally charged particles produced in deep inelastic muon interactions on a Be target using the existing muon beam line as a spectrometer. No such particles were found, leading to upper limits for the production cross section of the order of 10 −36 cm 2 for 200 GeV incident muon momentum and quark masses below 9 GeV for the 2 3 charge and 15 GeV for 1 3 charge.

Abstract: The transverse momenta of charged hadrons produced in high energy muon-proton scattering have been studied. The average squared transverse momentum 〈 p 2 ⊥ 〉 shows a strong dependence on z = E h / v characteristic of intrinsic momentum effects and a significant rise as a function of s = W 2 . The W 2 , q 2 , x and z dependences of the data are compared with the predictions of a perturbative QCD model.

Abstract: Charm production has been studied through multimuon events produced in 250 GeV μ + -interactions. The measured dimuon cross section is in agreement with the photon gluon fusion model at low values of Bjorken x within statistical and systematic errors. At larger values of x Bi the data do not support the magnitude of intrinsic charm used to explain hadro-production of charm. Upper limits on the intrinsic charm content of the nucleon are derived from the data.

Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the vμ→ v τ channel, the v τ signature being the identification of the τ -lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first v τ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008-2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Abstract: The next generation neutrino observatory proposed by the LBNO collaboration will address fundamental questions in particle and astroparticle physics. The experiment consists of a far detector, in its first stage a 20 kt LAr double phase TPC and a magnetised iron calorimeter, situated at 2300 km from CERN and a near detector based on a high-pressure argon gas TPC. The long baseline provides a unique opportunity to study neutrino flavour oscillations over their 1st and 2nd oscillation maxima exploring the $L/E$ behaviour, and distinguishing effects arising from $\delta_{CP}$ and matter. In this paper we have reevaluated the physics potential of this setup for determining the mass hierarchy (MH) and discovering CP-violation (CPV), using a conventional neutrino beam from the CERN SPS with a power of 750 kW. We use conservative assumptions on the knowledge of oscillation parameter priors and systematic uncertainties. The impact of each systematic error and the precision of oscillation prior is shown. We demonstrate that the first stage of LBNO can determine unambiguously the MH to $>5\sigma$C.L. over the whole phase space. We show that the statistical treatment of the experiment is of very high importance, resulting in the conclusion that LBNO has $\sim$ 100% probability to determine the MH in at most 4-5 years of running. Since the knowledge of MH is indispensable to extract $\delta_{CP}$ from the data, the first LBNO phase can convincingly give evidence for CPV on the $3\sigma$C.L. using today's knowledge on oscillation parameters and realistic assumptions on the systematic uncertainties., Comment: 35 pages, 22 figures, added authors

Abstract: We present new results based on the entire CHOOZ data sample. We find (at 90% confidence level) no evidence for neutrino oscillations in the anti_nue disappearance mode, for the parameter region given by approximately Delta m**2 > 7 x 10**-4 eV^2 for maximum mixing, and sin**2(2 theta) = 0.10 for large Delta m**2. Abstract: An experiment searching for the neutrino decay {nu}{sub 3}{r_arrow}{nu}{sub {ital j}}+{ital e}{sup +}+{ital e}{sup {minus}} has been performed at the nuclear power reactor of Bugey. The experimental setup and the data analysis are presented. No evidence for this decay has been found and stringent limits on the coupling {vert_bar}{ital U}{sub {ital e}3}{vert_bar}{sup 2} of a massive neutrino in the range of 1 MeV to 10 MeV to an electron are derived. Consequences for the existence of a massive {nu}{sub {tau}} are briefly discussed in the context of astrophysical and cosmological arguments.

Abstract: We report on a high precision measurement at 15m from a 2800 MWth reactor in which 300 000 events of electron antineutrino interactions with proton have been detected using an integral method. The cross section of the neutron inverse beta-decay process has been measured with an accuracy of 1.4%. The ratio of measured cross section to the expected one in the standard V-A theory of weak interactions is: σ ⨍ /σ V−A = 98.7% ± 1.4% ± 2.7% = 0.987 ± 0.030 .

Abstract: International audience; The INGRID(Interactive Neutrino GRID) detector is designed to measure the neutrino beam direction with a precision better than 1 mrad for T2K experiment. INGRID consists of 16 modules and placed around the beam center at 280 m downstream of the proton beam target. The module is a sandwich of iron targets and scintillator tracking planes which consist of X–Y layers. We have constructed all scintillator tracking planes and measured light yield of all scintillators. Currently we install 1st module into the detector hall and cosmic events are observed. INGRID is ready for 1st neutrino event from April 2009.

Abstract: Limits on the neutron flux produced by electrochemically induced nuclear fusion reactions have been set using a very efficient and low background detector based on 6 Li doped liquid scintillator to detect the 2.45 MeV neutron. These limits are of the order of 50 neutrons/h for differet electrolysis experimental conditions and are at least 30 times lower than the claimed positive results of Fleischmann and Pons, and of Jones et al.

Abstract: From cosmological constraints, the requirement for stable neutrinos is to have masses less than 30 eV. In the case that neutrino masses exceed this bound, neutrinos must decay sufficiently fast in order to satisfy the presently observed energy density of the universe. The experiments presented in this contribution consist of the complementary search for heavy neutrino admixture in nuclear beta decay of 177 Lu and of the search for a radiative neutrino decay mode at the nuclear power station in Bugey, France. The data obtained from the 177 Lu beta decay restrict the mixing probability of a heavy neutrino to the electron | U eh | 2 t / m > 180 × | U eh | 2 sec/eV which is one order of magnitude more restrictive than previous laboratory limits.

Abstract: Neutrinos, Imagerie; Second generation high-performance PET scanners, called ClearPET$^{TM}$, have been developed by working groups of the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC). High sensitivity and high spatial resolution for the ClearPET camera is achieved by using a phoswich arrangement combining two different types of lutetium-based scintillator materials: LSO from CTI and LuYAP:Ce from the CCC (ISTC project). In a first ClearPET prototype, phoswich arrangements of 8$\times$8 crystals of 2$\times$2$\times$10 mm$^3$ are coupled to multi-channel photomultiplier tubes (Hamamatsu R7600). A unit of four PMTs arranged in-line represents one of 20 sectors of the ring design. The opening diameter of the ring is 120 mm, the axial detector length is 110 mm. The PMT pulses are digitized by free-running ADCs and digital data processing determines the gamma energy, the phoswich layer and even the exact pulse starting time, which is subsequently used for coincidence detection. The gantry allows rotation of the detector modules around the field of view. Preliminary data shows a correct identification of the crystal layer about (98$\pm$1)%. Typically the energy resolution is (23.3$\pm$0.5)% for the luyap layer and (15.4$\pm$0.4)% for the lso layer. Early studies showed the timing resolution of 2 ns FWHM and 4.8 ns FWTM. the intrinsic spatial resolution ranges from 1.37 mm to 1.61 mm full-width of half-maximum (FWHM) with a mean of 1.48 mm FWHM. further improvements in image and energy resolution are expected when the system geometry is fully modeled.

Abstract: In the frame of the Crystal Clear Collaboration, a small animal PET prototype is presented. To measure the depth of interaction we have chosen a LSO/LuAP phoswich mode. Recent results on LuAP in terms of light yield and scintillation decay are presented. Multi-Anode PMT from Hamamatsu were used for the light detection. A dedicated acquisition electronics fully based on Ethernet was developed for the readout configuration and the data acquisition. In this note, we present the progress status and the perspectives of this work.

Abstract: A 2nd generation high performance small animal PET scanner, called ClearPET/spl trade/, has been designed and a first prototype is built by working groups of the Crystal Clear Collaboration (CCC). In order to achieve high sensitivity and maintain good uniform spatial resolution over the field of view in high resolution PET systems, it is necessary to extract the depth of interaction (DOI) information and correct for spatial degradation. The design of the first ClearPET/spl trade/ Demonstrator based on the use of the multi-anode photomultiplier tube (Hamamatsu R7600-M64) and a LSO/LuYAP phoswich matrix. The two crystal layers of 8*8 crystals (2*2*10 mm/sup 3/) are stacked on each other and mounted without light guide as one to one on the PMT. A unit of four PMTs arranged in-line represents one of 20 sectors of the ring design. The opening diameter of the crystal ring is 137 mm, the axial detector length is 110 mm. The PMT pulses are digitized by free-running ADCs and digital data processing determines the gamma energy, the phoswich layer and even the pulse arrival time. Single gamma interactions are recorded and coincidences are found by software. The gantry allows rotation of the detector modules around the field of view. The measurements have been done using the first LSO/LuYAP detector cassettes.

Abstract: Cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron via neutral-current (NCD) and charged-current (CCD) interactions with reactor antineutrinos are measured to be 6.08 +/- 0.77 x 10^(-45) cm-sq and 9.83 +/- 2.04 x 10^(-45) cm-sq per neutrino, respectively, in excellent agreement with current calculations. Since the experimental NCD value depends upon the CCD value, if we use the theoretical value for the CCD reaction, we obtain the improved value of 5.98 +/- 0.54 x 10^(-45) for the NCD cross section. The neutral-current reaction allows a unique measurement of the isovector-axial vector coupling constant in the hadronic weak interaction (beta). In the standard model, this constant is predicted to be exactly 1, independent of the Weinberg angle. We measure a value of beta^2 = 1.01 +/- 0.16. Using the above improved value for the NCD cross section, beta^2 becomes 0.99 +/- 0.10., Comment: 22pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The Bugey 3 experiment, designed to measure oscillations of reactor neutrinos, has used 3 identical detection modules, each of 600 liters, filled with a new 6 Li-loaded liquid scintillator. These modules were located in two shielding bunkers, respectively 15 and 40 m away from the reactor core. We describe here the mechanical characteristics of these modules, their shielding, the associated electronics, the trigger, the acquisition systems, the calibration and monitoring of these detectors, and the Monte Carlo simulations of their response to particles. We conclude on the overall performance of this new detection technique which has allowed the recording of 120000 neutrino interactions with good neutron efficiency (49%), low background (2.5 evts/hr) and good energy resolution (4% at 4.4 MeV).

Abstract: A search for the decay of isoscalar penetrating particles into ane + e-pair has been performed at the nuclear power reactor Bugey 5, situated close to Lyon (France). The detector set-up, consisting of an arrangement of large-area multiwire proportional chambers, and the data analysis are described. No excess of decay events over background has been observed. For standard axions, therefrom, stringent upper limits for the branching ratio 〈Γ a /Γ γ , averaged over the entire reactor gamma spectrum of magnetic multipolarity, have been obtained. Analysis in terms of the decay χ→e ++e − of a more general axionlike boson χ yields new constraints for the decay constantf χ which enhance existing laboratory limits considerably.

Abstract: Neutrino physics contributed in an fundamental way to the progress of science, opening important windows of knowledge in elementary particle physics, as well in astrophysics and cosmology. Substantial experimental efforts are presently dedicated to improve our knowledge on neutrino properties as, in fact, we don't know yet some of the basic ones. Although very significant steps forward have been done, neutrino masses and mixings still remain largely unknown and constitute an important field for future research. Are neutrinos Majorana or Dirac particles? Have they a magnetic moment? Historically, studies on weak processes and, therefore, on neutrino physics, provided first the Fermi theory of weak interactions and then the V-A theory. Finally, the observation of weak neutral currents provided the first experimental evidence for unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions by the so called'Standard Model'of elementary particles. In addition to the results obtained from the measurement of the solar neutrino flux, the study of atmospheric neutrinos strongly supports the hypothesis of neutrino oscillation among different flavours. At the same time, the detection of neutrinos emitted by our Sun gave an important confirmation that the Sun produces energy via a chain of nuclear reactions; in particular in our Sun a specific cycle - the hydrogen cycle - is responsible for practically all the produced energy.

Abstract: The differential cross section of K−p and K+p elastic scattering has been measured at 4.2, 7 and 10 GeV/c in the very forward region of scattering angles. The measurements have been made at the CERN PS by means of multiwire proportional chambers and counters. The region of momentum transfers t is 0.001 ⩽ |t| ⩽ 0.10 GeV2 at the highest momentum and 0.001 ⩽ |t| ⩽ 0.03 GeV2 at the lowest. Over these regions the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes reach their maximum interference. We have used a parametrisation of the above amplitudes to determine the value of the real part of the nuclear forward scattering amplitude. A dispersion relation fit has then been performed using these and earlier measurements; the asymptotic behaviour of the K±p real parts has been examined in the light of this fit.

Abstract: The ratio R = σ L σ T of the longitudinal to the tranverse photon absorption cross section has been determined from deep inelastic muon-proton scattering at incident energies of 120, 200 and 280 GeV. The results are given as a function of the variables x , Q 2 and ν of the interaction. In the kinematic range 60 ⩽ ν ⩽ 160 GeV at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 22.5 GeV 2 an average value of R = 0.00 ± 0.10 has been obtained.

Abstract: A measurement of the nucleon structure function F2 on iron is presented. The data cover a kinematic range of 3.25 {slanted equal to or less-than} Q2 {slanted equal to or less-than} 200 GeV2and 0.05 {slanted equal to or less-than} x {slanted equal to or less-than} 0.65. The data clearly show scaling violation. Fits in leading-order QCD have been made and values for the scale breaking parameter λ are given. © 1981.

Abstract: Two trimuon events of the type μ+N→μ+μ+μ+X and one μ+N→μ+μ−μ−X have been observed in 250 GeV μ+ -iron interactions. The expected rate from the decay of hadrons (charm, π, K) is about one event. Other processes that may contribute are both beauty production and charm production with D0−D0 mixing. The data give upper limits of 12×10−36 cm2 for the cross section of beauty pair production by muons, and 20% for D0 ↔ D0 transitions due to mixing, both at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Exclusive ϱ0 production has been measured in 120, 200 and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions at high Q2 (1 GeV2 < Q2 < 25 GeV2) and W (6 GeV < W < 19 GeV). The photoproduction cross section decreases as 1/Q4. A shallow t distribution, typical of a hard scattering process is observed and the ϱ0 is found to be dominantly in the helicity zero spin state. The ϱ0s are mainly produced by transverse photons and s-channel helicity conservation seems to be invalid. The data cannot be described by the vector meson dominance model. These data show that at high Q2 even exclusive ϱ0 muoproduction is a hard scattering process and that the soft hadron-like properties of the photon have disappeared.

Abstract: The high flux of low energy [MATH]e produced by the core of a PWR reactor of Bugey power plant has been used to search for evidence of neutrino oscillations through the inverse beta decay reaction [MATH]e + p → e+ + n. Measurements have been performed at two distances (13.5 and 18.5m). About 50 000 [MATH]e events have been collected at the first position and 25 000 [MATH]e events at the second one. Data analysis is almost completed.

Abstract: The fragmentation functions of u-quarks into positive and negative pions are determined from an analysis of identified pions produced in deep inelastic muon-deuterium scattering. The method adopted is not sensitive to the knowledge of the primary quark distribution functions. The fragmentation of u quarks to positive pions is found to fall less steeply in z than that to negative pions as expected in the quark parton model. © 1985.

Abstract: Using a lead glass detector installed in the EMC forward spectrometer radiative photons have been measured in 200 GeV muon-hydrogen collisions. The results are compared with the standard QED one photon emission theory of Mo and Tsai and also with the more recent predictions of a multiphoton emission theory of Chahine. We conclude that there is no evidence for any deviation from the standard theory, in terms of the yield and angular distribution of photons with fractional energy,z>0.7.

Abstract: The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The difference of these distributions is observed to factorise inx andz and thez-dependence is found to be independent of the target type and have a form (1−z)2.1±0.2. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. These results are in good agreement with the expectations of the Quark Parton Model.

Abstract: The energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos has been measured at two distances, 13.6 and 18.3 meters, from the core of a PWR power reactor at Bugey (FRANCE). About 63000 antineutrinos events have been recorded using the inverse β‐decay reaction νe+p→n+e+. A significant difference in the counting rate between the two positions has been observed. The compatibility of the results with solutions in a two‐neutrino oscillation analysis is discussed.

Abstract: The x and Q 2 dependence of the single photon exchange cross section d 2 σ /d Q 2 d x and the proton structure functions F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and R ( x , Q 2 ) have been measured in deep inelastic muon proton scattering in the region 0.02 x Q 2 2 . By comparing data at different incident muon energies R was found to have little kinematic dependence and an average value of −0.010 ± 0.037 (stat.) ± 0.102 (stat.). The observed deviations from scaling gave the value of Λ MS , the QCD mass scale parameter, to be 105 −45 +55 (stat.) −45 +85 (syst.) MeV. The fraction of the momentum of the nucleon carried by gluons was found to be ∼56% at Q 2 ∼22.5 GeV 2 . It is shown that to obtain a description of the data for F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) together with that measured in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering at lower Q 2 it is necessary to include additional higher twist contributions. The value of Λ MS remains unchanged with the inclusion of these contributions which were found to have an x -dependence of the form x 3 /(1 − x ).

Abstract: The European Muon Collaboration has built a large magnetic spectrometer system for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments at the CERN SPS muon beam. The general characteristics of the apparatus — composed of a target of either liquid hydrogen or deuterium, or iron plus scintillator, followed by a large magnet with wire chambers before and after it for precise angle and momentum measurement, a muon identifier, large trigger hodoscopes, and hadron identifiers — are explained and each part is described in some detail. The main features of the data-acquisition and apparatus-monitoring systems and of the off-line event reconstruction are given.

Abstract: We describe here the construction and performance of 2 m long, 5 cm diameter, circular drift tubes made of 1 mm thick bakelite paper coated inside with conductive paint. The longitudinal coordinate is read out with an external delay line system. The measured spatial resolution obtained from the drift time is close to 180 μm (one standard deviation). A system of 1100 tubes has been built for a muon experiment.

Abstract: In 280 GeV μ+ iron interactions the inelastic production of muon pairs has been observed in excess of QED processes. For energies greater than 20 GeV deposited in the target calorimeter the interactions are found to be mainly hadronic. Cross sections are presented for this process in the mass range 1−2.5 GeV/c2 and in the kinematic regions covered by the apparatus acceptance. The data are in good agreement with a photon-gluon fusion model for charmed particle production.

Abstract: The energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos has been measured at two distances, 13.6 and 18.3. meters, from the core of a PWR power reactor at Bugey (France). About 63 000 antineutrino events have been recorded using the inverse β-decay reaction ν e+p→n+e+. We observe a difference in the counting rates between the two positions. The compatibility of the results with solutions in a two-neutrino oscillations analysis is discussed.
