Abstract: Abstract JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract: The Japanese Virtual Observatory (JVO) is a web portal to various kinds of astronomical resources distributed all over the world. We have started its official operation of the JVO portal since March 2008. The JVO provides seamless access to the Virtual Observatory (VO) compliant data services, and also access to the reduced data observed with Subaru telescope and on-line data reduction system for Suprime-Cam instrument of the Subaru telescope. The system implements standards of the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) to communicate with the VO components in the world.

Abstract: The Virtual Observatory (VO) for Astronomy is a framework that empowers astronomical research by providing standard methods to find, access, and utilize astronomical data archives distributed around the world. VO projects in the world have been strenuously developing VO software tools and/or portal systems. Interoperability among VO projects has been achieved with the VO standard protocols defined by the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA). As a result, VO technologies are now used in obtaining astronomical research results from a huge amount of data. We describe typical examples of astronomical research enabled by the astronomical VO, and describe how the VO technologies are used in the research.

Abstract: EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract: We have measured the clustering of galaxies around active galactic nuclei (AGN) for which single-epoch virial masses of the super-massive black hole (SMBH) are available to investigate the relation between the large scale environment of AGNs and the evolution of SMBHs. The AGN samples used in this work were derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) observations and the galaxy samples were from 240~deg$^{2}$ S15b data of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). The investigated redshift range is 0.6--3.0, and the masses of the SMBHs lie in the range $10^{7.5}$--$10^{10}$~M$_{\odot}$. The absolute magnitude of the galaxy samples reaches to $M_{\lambda 310}$ $\sim$ $-$18 at rest frame wavelength 310~nm for the low-redshift end of the samples. More than 70\% of the galaxies in the analysis are blue. We found a significant dependence of the cross-correlation length on redshift, which primarily reflects the brightness dependence of the galaxy clustering. At the lowest redshifts the cross-correlation length increases from 7~$h^{-1}$~Mpc around $M_{\lambda 310}$$ = $$-19$~mag to $>$10~$h^{-1}$~Mpc beyond $M_{\lambda 310}$$ = $$-20$~mag. No significant dependence of the cross-correlation length on BH mass was found for whole galaxy samples dominated by blue galaxies, while there was an indication of BH mass dependence in the cross-correlation with red galaxies. These results provides a picture of the environment of AGNs studied in this paper being enriched with blue starforming galaxies, and a fraction of the galaxies are being evolved to red galaxies along with the evolution of SMBHs in that system., Comment: 46 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ for the HSC special issue

Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract: Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract: Background and purpose The main objective of this study was to compare the hand and finger performance of stroke patients in standing and sitting positions. Methods The study subjects were 11 males and 3 females with history of stroke (age, 68.6 ± 6.3 years, mean ± SD). Inclusion criteria were right-handedness before stroke, right hemiparesis due to left hemisphere lesion induced by stroke, at least 4 months between stroke and study enrollment, and ability to stand for more than 10 minutes. Tests of dexterity (peg board test), attention, unilateral spatial neglect, and cognition were conducted in comfortable sitting and standing positions. Seven subjects started in standing position, and the other seven subjects were tested first in sitting position. Tests in the first position were performed on one day, and repeated one week later but performed in a different position. Results The mean performance time on the peg board test in standing position was significantly faster than in sitting position (p=0.022). However, the results of the Trail making test-part A, line cancellation test, line bisection and Mini Mental State conducted in standing position were similar to those of sitting position. There were no differences between the first and second trial tests. Conclusions Our results showed that standing position improved the functional performance of hand and arm on the un-affected side in stroke patients, but had no effects on consistent attention, unilateral spatial neglect, or cognition.

Abstract: We observed the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1804-216 with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes from May to July in 2006. We detected very high energy gamma rays above 600 GeV at the 10 sigma level in an effective exposure of 76 hr. We obtained a differential flux of (5.0+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.6_{sys})\times 10^{-12}(E/1 TeV)^{-\alpha} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index \alpha of 2.69 +/- 0.30_{stat} +/- 0.34_{sys}, which is consistent with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. We also confirm the extended morphology of the source. By combining our result with multi-wavelength observations, we discuss the possible counterparts of HESS J1804-216 and the radiation mechanism based on leptonic and hadronic processes for a supernova remnant and a pulsar wind nebula., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in ApJ

Abstract: We present multi-waveband optical imaging data obtained from observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). The survey field, centered at R.A.=02:18:00, decl.=-05:00:00, has been the focus of a wide range of multi-wavelength observing programs spanning from X-ray to radio wavelengths. A large part of the optical imaging observations are carried out with Suprime-Cam on Subaru Telescope at Mauna Kea in the course of Subaru Telescope Observatory Projects. This paper describes our optical observations, data reduction and analysis procedures employed, and the characteristics of the data products. A total area of 1.22 sqdeg is covered in five contiguous sub-fields, each of which corresponds to a single Suprime-Cam field of view (34'x27'), in five broad-band filters B, V, Rc, i', z' to the depths of B=28.4, V=27.8, Rc=27.7, i'=27.7 and z'=26.6 (AB, 3-sigma, 2-arcsec aperture). The data are reduced and compiled into five multi-waveband photometric catalogs, separately for each Suprime-Cam pointing. The i'-band catalogs contain about 900,000 objects, making the SXDS catalogs one of the largest multi-waveband catalogs in corresponding depth and area coverage. The SXDS catalogs can be used for an extensive range of astronomical applications such as the number density of the Galactic halo stars to the large scale structures at the distant universe. The number counts of galaxies are derived and compared with those of existing deep extragalactic surveys. Abstract: We have observed the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 (G320.4-1.2), which contains the gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58, using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array from April to June in 2006. We detected gamma rays above 810 GeV at the 7 sigma level during a total effective exposure of 48.4 hours. We obtained a differential gamma-ray flux at 2.35 TeV of (7.9+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.7_{sys}) \times 10^{-13} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index of 2.21+/-0.39_{stat}+/-0.40_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. The morphology shows extended emission compared to our Point Spread Function. We consider the plausible origin of the high energy emission based on a multi-wavelength spectral analysis and energetics arguments.

13. Properties of Galaxies around AGNs with Most Massive Supermassive Black Hole Revealed by the Clustering Analysis

Abstract: We present results of the clustering analysis between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at redshift 0.1-1.0 for investigating properties of galaxies associated with the AGNs, revealing the nature of fueling mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We used 8059 SDSS AGNs/QSOs for which virial masses of individual SMBHs were measured, and divided them into four mass groups. Cross-correlation analysis was performed and bias for each mass group was derived. The averaged color and luminosity distributions of galaxies around the AGNs/QSOs were also derived for each mass group. The galaxy color was estimated for SED constructed from a merged SDSS and UKIDSS catalog. The distributions of color and luminosity were derived by the subtraction method, which does not require redshift information of galaxies. The main results of this work are: (1) a bias increases by a factor two from the lower mass group to the highest mass group; (2) the environment around AGNs with the most massive SMBH (Mbh > 10^9 Msun) is dominated by red sequence galaxies; (3) marginal indication of decline in luminosity function at dimmer side of M > -19.5 mag is found for galaxies around AGNs with Mbh = 10^8.2 - 10^9 Msun and nearest redshift group (z=0.1-0.3). These results indicate that AGNs with the most massive SMBHs reside in haloes where large fraction of galaxies have been transited to the red sequence. The accretion of hot halo gas as well as recycled gas from evolving stars can be the most plausible mechanism to fuel the SMBHs above ~10^9 Msun., 23 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

Abstract: We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEM-EUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA?s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope. Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very importantastrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highestenergies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of thelongitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples. Abstract: In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the JEM-EUSO instrument. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) of the International Space Station (ISS) will observe Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) from space. It will detect UV-light of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced by UHECRs traversing the Earth?s atmosphere. For each event, the detector will determine the energy, arrival direction and the type of the primary particle. The advantage of a space-borne detector resides in the largefield of view, using a target volume of about 10 12 tons of atmosphere, far greater than what is achievable from ground. Another advantage is a nearly uniform sampling of the whole celestial sphere. The corresponding increase in statistics will help to clarify the origin and sources of UHECRs and characterize the environment traversed during their production and propagation. JEM-EUSO is a 1.1 ton refractor telescope using an optics of 2.5 m diameter Fresnel lenses to focus the UV-light from EAS on a focal surface composed of about 5000 multi-anode photomultipliers, for a total of 3x10^5 channels. A multi-layer parallel architecture handles front-end acquisition, selecting and storing valid triggers. Each processing level filters the events with increasingly complex algorithms using FPGAs and DSPs to reject spurious events and reduce thedata rate to a value compatible with downlink constraints. 17. Differentiation of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis from seed-borne saprophytes using ELISA, Biolog and 16S rDNA sequencing

Abstract: Specificity of a monoclonal antibody (MAb), Cmm1, to geographically diverse strains of the seed-borne tomato pathogen, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm), was assessed and the MAb was tested for its usefulness as a tool to separate the pathogen from saprophytes in naturally infested tomato seed. Of the 236 international Cmm strains tested, 99% reacted with MAb Cmm1. MAb Cmm1 was also strongly reactive with an additional 32 strains isolated from seed that were later identified as Cmm by the Biolog MicroLog™ microbial identification system (Biolog, Inc., Hayward, CA) and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. It correctly differentiated these strains from 12 MAb Cmm1-negative seed strains that possessed similar colony morphology but were later identified as other Gram-positive genera and species. The specificity of MAb Cmm1 to the pathogen and the near universality of the MAb Cmm1-reactive antigen among diverse Cmm strains make this antibody a useful detection and identification tool. The finding that a large proportion of the Cmm strains associated with naturally infested tomato seed were putatively hypovirulent or non-virulent indicates that such populations cannot be ignored and points to a need for studies to determine their significance in host-pathogen interactions.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Patients with unresectable malignant gastroesophageal strictures often are troubled with reflux esophagitis after stent placement. METHODS: A self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) without an antireflux mechanism was placed in seven patients with unresectable malignant gastroesophageal strictures (group A), and SEMS with an antireflux mechanism was placed in five patients (group B). After we obtained monitoring systems, two patients in group A and all the patients in group B underwent measurement of bilirubin and pH in the esophagus using a 24-h bilirubin and pH monitor. RESULTS: The mean percentage of total time less than 0.14 for use of the bilirubin absorbance unit was 12.4% in group B and 64.0% in group A. The mean percentage of total time for a pH less than 4 was 2.9% in group B and 37.8% in group A. CONCLUSION: The placement of SEMS with the antireflux mechanism can be effective not only for palliation of gastroesophageal stricture, but also for prevention of reflux.

Abstract: CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observations at low elevation angles.

Abstract: JEM-EUSO is a space science mission to explore the extreme energies and physics of the Universe. Its instrument will watch the darkside of the earth and will detect UV photons emitted from the extensive air shower caused by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR above 1018 eV), or an extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) particle (e.g. above about 1020 eV). Such a high-rigidity particle as the latter arrives almost in a straight line from its origin through the magnetic fields of our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to allow us to trace the source location by its arrival direction. This can open the door to new astronomy with charged particles. In its 5 years of operation including the tilted mode, Extreme Universe Space Observatory an Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) will detect at least 1000 events with E > 7 × 1019 eV with the Greisen–Zatsepin–Ku’zmin (GZK) suppression spectrum. It can determine the energy spectrum and source locations of GZK to super-GZK regions with a statistical accuracy of several percent. JEM-EUSO is planned to be deployed by H2 transfer vehicle (HTV) and will be attached to the Japanese Experiment Module/Exposure Facility (JEM/EF) of International Space Station. JAXA has selected JEM-EUSO as one of the mission candidates of the second phase utilization of JEM/EF for launch in the early-to-mid 2010 s.

Abstract: Background: Although formalin has been widely used as an algesic substance in rodent studies, the unique biphasic effect seen in rats is not present in humans. Humans, like cats, have a monophasic behavioral response to formalin injection. Electrophysiologically, spinal dorsal horn neurons in cats also have what could be considered a monophasic response after the initial burst of activity following formalin injection. Although several studies of the effects of ketamine on formalin responses have been carried out in rodents, we are unaware of similar studies in cats. We hypothesize that such species differences may explain observed differences in preemptive analgesic effects. Therefore, we examined the effects of ketamine on activity of spinal wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons evoked by formalin injection in cats. Methods: We investigated in cats the effect of ketamine on the activity of WDR neurons in the spinal dorsal horn that was evoked by formalin. In addition, we studied the effects of pre- and post-administration of ketamine on the maintained phase of the formalin response. Each dose was a subanesthetic, anesthetic or high anesthetic dose (3.0 mg · kg−1, 10 mg · kg−1, and 30 mg · kg−1). Results: Intravenously administered ketamine produced a dose-dependent depression of evoked activity that was significantly greater when the drug was administered before formalin. Conclusions: In spite of the species differences in responses to formalin, there still appears to be a clear preemptive effect of ketamine in the cat. Species differences may not explain apparent differences between human and animal preemptive analgesia.

Abstract: Gamma rays with energies greater than 7 TeV from the Crab pulsar/nebula have been observed at large zenith angles, using the Imaging Atmospheric Technique from Woomera, South Australia. CANGAROO data taken in 1992, 1993 and 1995 indicate that the energy spectrum extends up to at least 50 TeV, without a change of the index of the power law spectrum. The observed differential spectrum is \noindent $(2.01\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-13}(E/{7 TeV})^{-2.53 \pm 0.18} TeV^{-1}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ between 7 TeV and 50 TeV. There is no apparent cut-off. The spectrum for photon energies above $\sim$10 TeV allows the maximum particle acceleration energy to be inferred, and implies that this unpulsed emission does not originate near the light cylinder of the pulsar, but in the nebula where the magnetic field is not strong enough to allow pair creation from the TeV photons. The hard gamma-ray energy spectrum above 10 TeV also provides information about the varying role of seed photons for the inverse Compton process at these high energies, as well as a possible contribution of $\pi ^{\circ}$-gamma rays from proton collisions.

Abstract: We describe here a simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the quantiation of GPIb of freshly-prepared washed platelets. This assay used rabbit antihuman platelet antibody as a platelet-capturing antibody and an anti-GPIb monoclonal antibody (OP-F1) conjugated with horseraddish peroxidase as a second antibody. The lowest concentration of GPIb antigen measurable by this ELISA was 0.01% of normal platelets when determined using a platelet concentration of 105/μl. The average value (mean±2SD) of platelet GPIb antigen from 30 normal individuals was 93.1±20.3%. Two unrelative patients with Bernard-Soulier syndrome showed less than 0.1% and 4.5%, respectively of normal platelet GPIb. Abstract: We report the detection, with the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, of a very high energy gamma-ray signal from the unidentified gamma-ray source HESS J1614-518, which was discovered in the H.E.S.S. Galactic plane survey. Diffuse gamma-ray emission was detected above 760 GeV at the 8.9 sigma level during an effective exposure of 54 hr from 2008 May to August. The spectrum can be represented by a power-law: 8.2+-2.2_{stat}+-2.5_{sys}x10^{-12}x (E/1TeV)^{-Gamma} cm^{-2} s^{-1} TeV^{-1} with a photon index Gamma of 2.4+-0.3_{stat}+-0.2_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observations. By combining our result with multi-wavelength data, we discuss the possible counterparts for HESS J1614-518 and consider radiation mechanisms based on hadronic and leptonic processes for a supernova remnant, stellar winds from massive stars, and a pulsar wind nebula. Abstract: Phthalate esters, commonly used as plasticizers, show anti-androgenic activity and cause male reproductive malformation in experimental animals. However, the effects of prenatal exposure to phthalate esters in humans have not been extensively studied. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between prenatal exposure to phthalate esters and the anogenital distance (AGD) as a reproductive endpoint in human male newborns. Spot urine samples were collected from 111 Japanese pregnant women after obtaining their informed consent. Seven urinary phthalate ester metabolites were determined by high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Urinary isoflavones concentrations were measured as possible covariates because their oestrogenicities and high exposure levels among Japanese have the potential to affect male genital development. Birth outcomes and AGD, the distance from the centre of the anus to external genitalia, were measured for their male newborns. In a multiple regression model, the log-transformed mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate concentration (specific gravity-corrected) was negatively significant, and maternal smoking status was positively significant, in explaining anogenital index (AGI) when potential covariates were controlled for. Urinary isoflavones did not significantly contribute to AGI in any models. Our results suggest that prenatal exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate affects reproductive development in human males.

Abstract: A 3.8 m telescope for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy was installed near Woomera, South Australia in 1991 and started operation in 1992. The construction and operation of the 3.8 m telescope is described, showing the characteristics of the experimental apparatus, such as the electronics circuits and the phototube camera. The field of view of the camera is of 3° diameter, consisting of 220 pixels with each pixel viewing a 0.12° × 0.12° area of the sky. Analysis of acquired data shows the expected features of Cherenkov light from air showers, and it is concluded that the telescope is operating as an imaging Cherenkov telescope. We estimate that the energy threshold for gamma-rays is about 1 TeV.

Abstract: We have fabricated a millimeter wave observation system using an array of bolometric detectors. The performance of the system depends largely on obtaining identical performance from each bolometer. We achieved a variance in the responsivity of less than 4% except for one of the seven elements. The bolometers had an electrical NEP of 1.3×10−16 W/√Hz under radiation background loading of 30pW. We used an AC bridge readout circuit to significantly improve the stability of the array and showed that observations can be done without a mechanical beam switch. The bolometer array is now in use on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope for 150GHz observations.

Abstract: The CANGAROO project incorporates two Čerenkov imaging telescopes at Woomera to obtain stereo images of very high-energy gamma-ray (and cosmic-ray) showers. The first stereo observations, with one imaging system, were made in March 1992, and preliminary stereo imaging observations began in July 1992. This paper describes the stereo imaging technique, the sources under investigation, and the indications from the first data sets.

Abstract: We present optical and near infrared observations of GRB 080325 classified as a "Dark GRB". Near-infrared observations with Subaru/MOIRCS provided a clear detection of afterglow in Ks band, although no optical counterpart was reported. The flux ratio of rest-wavelength optical to X-ray bands of the afterglow indicates that the dust extinction along the line of sight to the afterglow is Av = 2.7 - 10 mag. This large extinction is probably the major reason for optical faintness of GRB 080325. The J - Ks color of the host galaxy, (J - Ks = 1.3 in AB magnitude), is significantly redder than those for typical GRB hosts previously identified. In addition to J and Ks bands, optical images in B, Rc, i', and z' bands with Subaru/Suprime-Cam were obtained at about one year after the burst, and a photometric redshift of the host is estimated to be z_{photo} = 1.9. The host luminosity is comparable to L^{*} at z \sim 2 in contrast to the sub-L^{*} property of typical GRB hosts at lower redshifts. The best-fit stellar population synthesis model for the host shows that a large dust extinction (Av = 0.8 mag) attributes to the red nature of the host and that the host galaxy is massive (M_{*} = 7.0 \times 10^{10} Msun) which is one of the most massive GRB hosts previously identified. By assuming that the mass-metallicity relation for star-forming galaxies at z \sim 2 is applicable for the GRB host, this large stellar mass suggests the high metallicity environment around GRB 080325, consistent with inferred large extinction., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: After cataracts in 10 eyes of 8 pigmented or albino rabbits had been removed by phacoemulsification, a specially designed 10.0 × 8.5-millimeter accommodative intraocular lens with spring action ("spring IOL") was implanted through a 4.5- to 5.0-millimeter "dumbbell" linear anterior capsular opening. The average follow up was 11 ± 8 months. All the spring IOLs were almost completely fixed in the capsular bag, and the anterior and posterior capsules remained transparent. However, due to limitations specific to the rabbit, no accommodative power could be detected; also, we observed lens epithelial cells and subsequent fibrous production proceeding from the equatorial area into the area between the optics.

Abstract: Because accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies may accelerate particles to high energies, clusters are candidate sites for the origin of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-rays. A prediction was presented for gamma-ray emission from a cluster of galaxies at a detectable level with the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-ray emission was produced via inverse Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by electron-positron pairs generated by collisions of UHE cosmic rays in the cluster. We observed two clusters of galaxies, Abell 3667 and Abell 4038, searching for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system in 2006. The analysis showed no significant excess around these clusters, yielding upper limits on the gamma-ray emission. From a comparison of the upper limit for the north-west radio relic region of Abell 3667 with a model prediction, we derive a lower limit for the magnetic field of the region of ~0.1 micro G. This shows the potential of gamma-ray observations in studies of the cluster environment. We also discuss the flux upper limit from cluster center regions using a model of gamma-ray emission from neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of cosmic-ray protons with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). Abstract: Kepler's supernova, discovered in October 1604, produced a remnant that has been well studied observationally in the radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray bands, and theoretically. Some models have predicted a TeV gamma-ray flux that is detectable with current Imaging Cherenkov Atmospheric Telescopes. We report on observations carried out in 2005 April with the CANGAROO-III telescope. Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the outcomes of endometrial cancer patients treated with systematic surgery omitting paraarotic lymphadenectomy.We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive series of 84 endometrioid-type endometrial cancer patients at FIGO Stage I, II or III without grossly metastatic paraaortic lymphadenodes, who underwent surgery at our institute.Sixty-five patients (77%) underwent primary surgery with pelvic lymphadenectomy while the remaining 19 patients underwent surgery without lymphadenectomy due to severe medical complications or age greater than 70 years. The patients with high risk for recurrence were treated mainly by adjuvant irradiation therapy of the whole pelvis. The median follow-up period was 44 months. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 92%, 92% and 65% for FIGO Stage I, II and III, respectively. Recurrence was detected in eight of the 82 optimally operated patients (9.8%). Out of the eight recurrent patients, five patients had a recurrent tumor at extra-pelvic sites (chest or abdomen), two patients had a recurrent tumor only in a paraaortic lymph node, and one patient had a recurrent tumor only in the vagina. Thus, the recurrence rate was relatively low, with 2.4% relapse at the paraarotic lymph nodes, and 5-year OS rate appeared to be favorable. However, all the six recurrent patients who underwent adjuvant radiation therapy had distant recurrence.These findings indicate that omission of paraarotic lymphadenectomy may be acceptable for endometrial cancer patients without gross metastasis at this site. However, the high rate of distant recurrence after whole pelvic irradiation strongly indicates an urgent need to develop potent systemic adjuvant therapy, potentially by chemotherapy or chemoradiation therapy.

Abstract: Mouse models show that progressive shortening of telomeres with ageing causes chromosomal instability, which can lead to the initiation of cancer. However, it is unclear what roles telomere shortening plays in human carcinogenesis. The present study has investigated the involvement of telomere dynamics in uterine carcinogenesis. Using telomere-FISH (telo-FISH) assays, telomere lengths in premalignant and malignant cervical and endometrial lesions were measured and compared with chromosomal arm loss or gain. Telo-FISH signals were visualized with Cy3-labelled telomere-specific probes and presented as telomere intensity (TI). Early-stage cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs), especially CIN2, had significantly shorter telomeres than corresponding normal squamous epithelia (p = 0.019), together with increased rates of chromosomal arm loss/gain (p0.001). Cervical cancers had relatively short telomeres, but they also showed greater heterogeneity than other sampled tissues, including those with long telomeres. In contrast, there was no significant difference between the telomere length of normal endometrium and of endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer. There was no significant difference in the rate of chromosomal arm loss/gain between normal endometrium and endometrial hyperplasia. These findings suggest that progressive shortening of telomeres occurs in CIN, in association with chromosomal instability, which may play critical roles in cervical carcinogenesis. In contrast, endometrial hyperplasias have relatively stable telomeres without widespread chromosome alteration, implying that endometrial carcinogenesis involves mechanisms distinct from those of cervical carcinogenesis, possibly including microsatellite instability.

Abstract: We made stereoscopic observations of the Vela Pulsar region with two of the 10 m diameter CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in January and February, 2004, in a search for sub-TeV gamma-rays from the pulsar and surrounding regions. We describe the observations, provide a detailed account of the calibration methods, and introduce the improved and bias-free analysis techniques employed for CANGAROO-III data. No evidence of gamma-ray emission is found from either the pulsar position or the previously reported position offset by 0.13 degree, and the resulting upper limits are a factor of five less than the previously reported flux from observations with the CANGAROO-I 3.8 m telescope. Following the recent report by the H.E.S.S. group of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is $\sim$0.5 degree south of the pulsar position, we examined this region and found supporting evidence for emission extended over $\sim$0.6 degree., 13 pages, 26 figures, emulateapj.cls, to appear in ApJ

Abstract: The Japanese Virtual Observatory (JVO) aims to provide astronomers to access federated astronomical databases (especially SUBARU, Nobeyama and ALMA) and data analysis environment by using the grid technology. We defined a unified query language to access federated astronomical databases, the JVOQL, and constructed a prototype of the JVO. We adopted Globus Tool Kit 2 (GTK2) in this prototype to see its effectiveness in VO type application, especially for remote operations and file transfers, and UDDI for looking up services. We found that the system worked as we had expected, however, it took very long to initiate each grid process. Thus we replaced the GTK2 with a tool distributed by NSF middleware initiative, and shortened the polling intervals of the job-manager from 30 seconds to 3 seconds. As a result, the serious problem has been partially resolved - the elapsed time for a query became about a half compared with the previous one.

Abstract: The Subaru Deep Field (SDF) project is a program of Subaru Observatory to carry out a deep galaxy survey over a blank field as large as 34'x27'. The program consists of very deep multi-band optical imaging, near infrared imaging for smaller portions of the field and follow-up optical spectroscopy. Major scientific goals of the project are to construct large samples of Lyman-break galaxies at z~4-5 and Lyman alpha emitters at z~5.7 and 6.6, and to make detailed studies these very high-redshift galaxy populations. In this paper, we describe the optical imaging observations and data reduction, presenting mosaicked images and object catalogs in seven bandpasses.The optical imaging was made through five broad-band filters, B, V, R, i', z', and two narrow-band filters, NB816 (lambda_c=8150A) and NB921 (lambda_c=9196A) with almost 10 hours long integrations for each band. The limiting magnitudes measured at 3-sigma on a 2" aperture are B=28.45, V=27.74, R=27.80, i'=27.43, z'=26.62, NB816=26.63, and NB921=26.54 in the AB system. The object catalog constructed for each of the seven bands contains more than 10^5 objects. The galaxy number counts corrected for detection incompleteness and star count contribution are found to be consistent with previous results in the literature. Abstract: In this paper the Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy program at the University of Adelaide is described. VHE gamma rays with energies above ~5 × 1011eV are observed using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Results from the first three years observations at Woomera and the current upgrading of the telecope are described. The CANGAROO project, a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and a number of Japanese institutions, is also introduced.

Abstract: Acid treatment of normal washed platelets prepared by albumin density gradient centrifugation followed by formalin fixation effectively eliminates HLA class I antigens from the platelet surface, without altering the immunoreactivity of platelet membrane glycoproteins Ib and IIb/IIIa complex. Using these platelets, flow cytometric analysis was performed on a total of 20 sera from different patients with chronic ITP, and revealed an inverse linear correlation between the platelet count and the mean fluorescence intensity which represents a relative amount of platelet-bound IgG. These results suggest that acid-treated, formalin-fixed platelets can be used as specimens to detect anti-platelet antibodies to differentiate from those to HLA-class I antigens.

Abstract: The southern supernova remnant (SNR)W28 was observed in 1994 and 1995 by the CANGAROO 3.8m telescope in a search formulti-TeV gamma ray emission, using the Cerenkov imaging technique. We obtained upper limits for a variety of point-like and extended features within a +-1 degree-region and briefly discuss these results, together with that of EGRET within the framework of a shock acceleration model of the W28 SNR., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the GeV-TeV Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Workshop, "Towards a Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Detector VI" (Snowbird, Utah, August 13-16, 1999)

Abstract: In the middle of July, 1996, a massive outbreak of hemorrhagic colitis (HC) occurred among elementary schoolchildren in Sakai city. This is the most widespread outbreak of O157 infection ever experienced to our knowledge. Lunch foods supplied in the elementary schools in Sakai were contaminated by Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157. One hundred and twenty-one cases developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) from 12,680 symptomatic patients, including putative secondary infections, and three girls died during this outbreak. Sakai City Hospital is one of the core medical facilities in this community; hence, 425 children with HC were treated at the hospital. Antibiotics were used extensively on all patients. Among them, 12 children developed HUS. All 425 children, including the patients with HUS, recovered without significant sequelae. In the present paper, the clinical experiences during this massive outbreak of E. coli O157 infection in Sakai City Hospital are described.
