1. Handy Kitchen Liquid Food Viscometer Using a DC Motor as Actuator and Sensor

Abstract

Liquid food can likely cause accidental ingestion in patients with dysphagia. This study proposes a handheld stirrer-type rotational viscometer that can be used in the kitchen or at meals for dysphagia. A novel rotational viscometer is proposed considering that the rotation speed of the handheld stirrer is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the fluids to be stirred. We adopt the sensorless control strategy. We use a small brush-type DC motor, which functions as a rotary actuator and a rotational speed sensor to realize the proposed device. Because the proposed viscometer is used in the aforementioned fields, it must be compact, handy, simple in structure, and low-cost. We apply the proposed viscometer to fluids with viscosities ranging from 5000 to 54000 mPa $\cdot \text{s}$ for testing, using a cylindrical rotor with a length of 15 mm and diameter of 10 mm. The repeatability and linearity as a measurement instrument evaluated by the ASTM standards E3116-18 are less than 5% and 4% for the aforementioned fluids under the temperature of 11 °C, respectively. Because the thickness of liquid food is classified into only three categories (mildly, moderately, and extremely thick), the accuracy of this method is sufficient for the measurement.

2. Model of Urine Accumulation in the Bladder and Method for Predicting Unconstrained Urine Volume Based on Absorption Spectrum of Urine

Abstract

As part of their excretion care protocol, many of the senior citizens living in nursing homes are required to wear a diaper for urinary incontinence. However, the diaper must be changed by the caregiver after each incontinence episode, and some of the elderly affected may be unable to inform the caregiver about an episode because of cognitive problems or owing to a sense a shame. Being able to predict the volume of urine in the bladder without having to attach any sensors to the body would make it possible for the caregiver to take the residents to the toilet before they have an incontinence episode. Moreover, the residents would not have to wear a diaper. With this goal in mind, in this study, we developed a macroscopic model for urine accumulation in the bladder as well as a method for predicting the urine volume in the bladder based on the absorption spectrum of urine obtained immediately after urination. The proposed method does not involve attaching a sensor on the skin. We performed a series of experiments to evaluate the proposed method and calculated its error rate based on the actual amount of urine and that predicted using the method. The error rate was then compared with that for an ultrasonic sensor attached to the skin above the bladder. The mean of the error rate of the proposed method was 15.46% whereas that of the ultrasonic sensor was 23.42 %, with the two being significantly different at the 5% level.

10. Full O(α) electroweak radiative corrections to e+e−→e+e−γ at the ILC with GRACE-Loop

Abstract

By using the GRACE-Loop system, we calculate the full O(α) electroweak radiative corrections to the process e+e−→e+e−γ, which is important for future investigations at the International Linear Collider (ILC). With the GRACE-Loop system, the calculations are checked numerically by three consistency tests: ultraviolet finiteness, infrared finiteness, and gauge-parameter independence. The results show good numerical stability when quadruple precision is used. In the phenomenological results, we find that the electroweak corrections to the total cross section range from ∼−4% to ∼−21% when s varies from 250 GeV to 1 TeV. The corrections also significantly affect the differential cross sections, which are a function of energies and angles of the final state particles. Such corrections will play an important role in the high-precision program at the ILC.

11. Measuring lepton flavor violation at the LHC

Abstract

A new process with the lepton flavor violation (LFV) is presented in the setup for the LHC. The LFV is induced by the one-loop effect through Higgs bosons in the framework of the type-III two Higgs doublet model. At the decoupling limit of the parameter space of type-III two Higgs doublet model, where the masses of heavier Higgs bosons are at TeV scale while the mass of the lighter Higgs boson remains as the SM Higgs boson, the LFV process is strongly suppressed at the tree level. However, one-loop induced LFV process is instead realized to be a sizeable production cross section in vector-boson fusion production process at LHC. Since the LFV process may not be produced by the s-channel H/A or H± bosons decays only, rather mixture with the t-channel production mode allows us to access to the higher Higgs boson mass region than current s-channel based searches at the LHC. This gives complementary path to cover the parameter spaces in LFV couplings.

12. Expectations for probing the Higgs–fermion and the Higgs–vector boson couplings at the ILC

Abstract

Deviations from the standard Higgs sector generated by some new physics at an energy scale Λ could be described by an effective SU(3)c×SU(2)L×U(1) invariant non-renormalizable Lagrangian terms of dimension six. A systematic study of various Higgs boson production × decay channels (γγ, ZZ, WW, bb¯, ττ¯) at the International Linear Collider (ILC) in the SM extension by effective operators is carried out. Statistical methods are used to establish a degree of consistency for the standard Higgs sector with the forthcoming data, using the expected ILC accuracies of the Higgs boson production channels. Global fits in the two-parametric anomalous coupling space indicating possible deviations from the standard Higgs-fermion and Higgs-gauge boson couplings are performed.

It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

With global aging, people who require care, such as people with dementia (PwD), are increasing within many developed countries. And PwDs may wander and unconsciously set foot outdoors, it may lead serious accidents, such as, traffic accidents. Here, round-the-clock monitoring by caregivers is necessary, which can be a burden for the caregivers. Therefore, an automatic wandering detection system is required when an elderly person wanders outdoors, in which case the detection system transmits a 'moving' followed by an 'absence' state. In this paper, we focus on the transition from the 'resting' to the 'absence' state, via the 'moving' state as one of the wandering transitions. To capture the transition of the three states, our method based on the hidden Markov model (HMM) is built. Using our method, the restraint where the 'resting' state and 'absence' state cannot be transmitted to each other is applied. To validate our method, we conducted the experiment with 10 subjects. Abstract

Elderly population in the world is increasing, and consequently, their nursing burden is also increasing. In such situations, monitoring and evaluating their daily action facilitates efficient nursing care. Especially, we focus on an unconscious activity during sleep, i.e. turnover. Monitoring turnover during sleep is essential to evaluate various conditions related to sleep. Bedsores are considered as one of the monitoring conditions. Changing patient's posture every two hours is required for caregivers to prevent bedsore. Herein, we attempt to develop an unconstrained nocturnal monitoring system using a sensing device based on piezoelectric ceramics that can detect the vibrations owing to human body movement on the bed. In the proposed method, in order to construct a multi-points sensing, we placed two sensing devices under the right and left legs at the head-side of an ordinary bed. Using this equipment, when a subject lies on the bed, feature is calculated from the output voltages of the sensing devices. In order to evaluate our proposed method, we conducted an experiment with six healthy male subjects. Abstract

Based on the requirements from a conceptual design of a polarized positron beam for future linear colliders, we constructed a special collision system with a short focal length of 150 mm of the laser beams so as to produce γ rays through inverse Compton scattering. In order to achieve efficient laser-electron collisions, we created a special optics to produce very small e^{-}-beam sizes of σ_{e_{x0}}=7.6 μm and σ_{e_{y0}}=5.4 μm in the horizontal and vertical directions at the collision point. Using laser light with a wavelength of 532 nm and an e^{-} beam of 1.28 GeV, provided from the ATF-damping ring at KEK, we generated 2×10^{5} γ rays with a time duration of 26 ps in rms, leading to a peak brightness of 1.7×10^{18}/(mrad^{2} mm^{2} 0.1%bandwidth s) near to the maximum energy of 56 MeV.

Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

20. Sleep-Stage Decision Algorithm by Using Heartbeat and Body-Movement Signals

Abstract

This paper describes a noninvasive algorithm to estimate the sleep stages used in the Rechtschaffen and Kales method (R-K method). The heartbeat and body-movement signals measured by the noninvasive pneumatic method are used to estimate the sleep stages instead of using the Eletroencephalogram and Electromyography in the R-K method. From the noninvasive measurements, we defined two indices that indicate the condition of REM sleep and the sleep depth. Functions to obtain the incidence ratio and the standard deviation of the extracted elements for each sleep stage were also determined, for each age group of the subjects. Using these indices and functions, an algorithm to classify the subjects' sleep stages was proposed. The mean agreement ratios between the sleep stages' data obtained from the proposed method and those from the de facto standard R-K method, for the stages categorized into six, five, and three, were 51.6%, 56.2%, and 77.5%, and their corresponding mean values of kappa statistics were 0.29, 0.39, and 0.48, respectively. The proposed method shows closer agreement with the result of R-K method than the similar noninvasive method presented earlier.

Abstract

This paper describes a method to estimate the measure of human energy expenditure referred to as metabolic equivalents (METs). The measure is defined by an index of the amount of energy a person expends through normal daily activities. The average MET values are defined by the type of activity; for example, brisk walking corresponds to 4 METs. The index lists 107 activities and the corresponding MET values. However, to determine the energy consumed in a day, each type of activity and its duration must be noted, which is inconvenient and time consuming. Here, we consider a quantitative method to estimate the METs from the acceleration of waist motion in our activities. We consider a simple physical model of a moving human body, define the power output for an activity, and then relate the maximum oxygen intake rate per minute, which is proportional to the energy expenditure per minute with the power output. Based on these factors, we developed an automatic MET estimator using a 3-D accelerometer. The system was examined during various selected activities, and the validity of the MET estimation method was tested in activities, excluding very intense activities. The exercise intensity for walking at various speeds was estimated with an average error of -0.6 METs.

Abstract

SummaryObjectives: The integration of noninvasive vital sign sensors and wireless sensor networks into intelligent alarm systems has the potential to improve patient safety. We developed a wireless network-based system (“Smart Stretcher”), which was designed to constantly monitor patient vital signs and detect apnea during transfers within a hospital. The system alerts medical staff in case of an emergency through a wireless network.Methods: A small-scale technical feasibility study was conducted to assess the performance of the system in a simulated hospital environment. Smart Stretcher consists of three components: a small air-mat type pressure sensor measuring respiratory rate and detecting apnea, a patient identification system using RFID technology, and an indoor positioning system using a ZigBee wireless network. In the feasibility experiment, two nurses transferred four subjects who stopped breathing for 10 seconds, after which we calculated the accuracy of apnea detections, repeating this at varying speeds and subject positions. We alsoperformed asubjective evaluation of perceptions and expectations of Smart Stretcher by nurses.Results: The system could detect apnea in all subjects at a rate of over 90%, patient IDs and locations were correctly detected in real time, and the system could alert medical staff. In addition, the results of nurse’s evaluations were mostly positive.Conclusions: The technical feasibility experiment and evaluation of Smart Stretcher suggest that the system could play a key role in monitoring patients during hospital transfers.

23. Doppler sonography for intraneural vascularization of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow – Before and after surgery

Abstract

Introduction/Background The finding of intraneural blood flow (IBF) signal by doppler sonography was interpreted in several ways at entrapment neuropathy. There is no report of IBF after surgery of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). We investigated IBF in UNE before and after surgery. Material and method Case series study. Subject: nine arms (only men) diagnosed and confirmed as UNE by surgery. All arms were performed grey scale sonography (GS) using an ultrasound machine (AprioXV; Toshiba) with 12 MHz linear-array transducer and electrodiagnostic study (EDX) before and after surgery. We performed Doppler sonography (DS): 5 arms before surgery, 6 arms after surgery and 2 arms both. In EDX, diagnosis of UNE as follows: absolute motor CV from above elbow to below elbow of less than 50 m/s and (1) or (2) (1) differential slowing (10 m/s across elbow). (2) conduction block across elbow. In GS, diagnosis of UNE as follows: cut-off value was the largest cross-sectional area from 2 cm distal to 2 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle > 11 mm 2 . Results General findings before surgery: EDX diagnosed 8 arms as UNE but one. Seven arms were diagnosed as UNE by GS. General findings after surgery: All 9 arms were improved in clinical signs. EDX did not change. Eight were diagnosed as UNE by GS. DS findings before surgery: IBF signal was not detected in 3 arms and detected in 2 arms but absent pulse. DS findings of after surgery: six arms were detected IBF signal and pulsatility. Discussion These findings may suggest that releasing entrapment site might decrease endoneurial fluid pressure and increase IBF. Conclusion About recovery from UNE after surgery, it may be useful to evaluate intraneural vascularity at the affected site with DS.

Abstract

In this paper, we study not only the new constructive inter-track interference (CITI) code based on the equalized level but also Viterbi detection algorithm taking into account the ITI from adjacent tracks for the perpendicular magnetic recording channel without a differentiator of two-track model. Although the investigation of this paper was not practical but theoretical, the result shows that the permissible percentage of ITI for conventional Viterbi detection to attain better performance compared with the case of single track is 26%, while the percentage for the proposed one is improved up to 50%. Further investigation has to be required under a more realistic system and moreover may be expanded into patterned media perpendicular magnetic recording.

Abstract

Nonlinear transition shift (NLTS) influences the performance of PRML channels in perpendicular magnetic recording. For NLTS, it is thought that write pre-compensation is useful to write the transition at the intended position. In this paper, we study the influence of NLTS on the BER performance of GPRML channels and show the appropriate amount of pre-compensation for GPRML channels both with and without a post-processor (PP) to achieve better BER performance. The results show that the widening the shortest bit length by NLTS brings the BER improvement to GPRML channel and the write pre-compensation is useful for a GPRML channel with PP.

27. Shock tube studies of thermal radiation of diesel-spray combustion under a range of spray conditions

Abstract

A tailored interface shock tube and an over-tailored interface shock tube were used to measure the thermal energy radiated during diesel-spray combustion of light oil, α-methylnaphthalene and cetane by changing the injection pressure. The ignition delay of methanol and the thermal radiation were also measured. Experiments were performed in a steel shock tube with a 7 m low-pressure section filled with air and a 6 m high-pressure section. Pre-compressed fuel was injected through a throttle nozzle into air behind a reflected shock wave. Monochromatic emissive power and the power emitted across all infrared wavelengths were measured with IR-detectors set along the central axis of the tube. Time-dependent radii where soot particles radiated were also determined, and the results were as follows. For diesel spray combustion with high injection pressures (from 10 to 80 MPa), the thermal radiation energy of light oil per injection increased with injection pressure from 10 to 30 MPa. The energy was about 2% of the heat of combustion of light oil at P inj = about 30 MPa. At injection pressure above 30 MPa the thermal radiation decreased with increasing injection pressure. This profile agreed well with the combustion duration, the flame length, the maximum amount of soot in the flame, the time-integrated soot volume and the time-integrated flame volume. The ignition delay of light oil was observed to decrease monotonically with increasing fuel injection pressure. For diesel spray combustion of methanol, the thermal radiation including that due to the gas phase was 1% of the combustion heat at maximum, and usually lower than 1%. The thermal radiation due to soot was lower than 0.05% of the combustion heat. The ignition delays were larger (about 50%) than those of light oil. However, these differences were within experimental error.

Abstract

Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract

The optimal treatment for pelvic organ prolapse has been the subject of much discussion. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of a combination of uterosacral colpopexy and anterior vaginal mesh implantation.A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted. Twenty-eight patients with stage III-IV cystocele and uterine prolapse underwent reconstructive surgery. A combination of vaginal hysterectomy, McCall culdeplasty, and trocar-guided anterior vaginal mesh implantation was performed, and the patients' postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Patient satisfaction was investigated using the modified Short Form 12 version 2 (SF-12v2) questionnaire, and interviews regarding sexual behavior were conducted at 1 postoperative year.A bladder injury occurred during the dissection in one case (3.6%). Recurrent vaginal vault prolapse beyond the hymen was observed in one patient (cure rate: 96.4%), and further mesh augmentation was required in this case. Another patient developed mild cystocele (Ba = 0), but was simply observed because she did not complain of any symptoms caused by vaginal descent. We did not experience any other mesh-related complications, such as protrusion, chronic pain, or chronic inflammation, during the follow-up period. The patients' modified SF-12 scores at 12 months were significantly better than their preoperative scores in all eight domains.The satisfactory correction of pelvic organ prolapse was achieved using a combination of vaginal hysterectomy and uterosacral ligament colpopexy augmented by anterior vaginal mesh implantation. © 2016 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Abstract

This paper describes a novel sensor device, a pressure pulse wave meter, which uses a bidirectional condenser microphone. The microphone work as a microphone as well as a sensor with high gain over a wide frequency range; they are also highly reliable and economic. Currently aging is becoming a serious social issue in Japan causing increased medical expenses in the country. Hence, it is important for elderly citizens to check health condition at home, and to care the health conditions through daily monitoring. Abstract

Many of the ever-growing elderly population require exercise, such as running, for health management. One important element of a runner’s training is the choice of shoes for exercise; shoes are important because they provide the interface between the feet and road. When we purchase shoes, we may instinctively choose a pair after trying on many different pairs of shoes. Selecting the shoes instinctively may work, but it does not guarantee a suitable fit for running activities. Therefore, if we could select suitable shoes for each runner from the viewpoint of brain activities, it would be helpful for validating shoe selection. In this paper, we describe how brain activities show different characteristics during particular task, corresponding to different properties of shoes. Using five subjects, we performed a verification experiment, applying weight, softness, and flexibility as shoe properties. In order to affect the shoe property’s differences to the brain, subjects run for 10 min. Before and after running, subjects conducted a paced auditory serial addition task (PASAT) as the particular task; and the subjects’ brain activities during the PASAT are evaluated based on oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin relative concentration changes, measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). When the brain works actively, oxihemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin concentration drastically changes; therefore, we calculate the maximum values of concentration changes. In order to normalize relative concentration changes after running, the maximum value are divided by before running maximum value as evaluation parameters. The classification of the groups of shoes is expressed on a self-organizing map (SOM). As a result, deoxyhemoglobin can make clusters for two of the three types of shoes.

Abstract

We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEM-EUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA?s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope. Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very importantastrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highestenergies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of thelongitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples. Abstract

In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the JEM-EUSO instrument. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) of the International Space Station (ISS) will observe Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) from space. It will detect UV-light of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced by UHECRs traversing the Earth?s atmosphere. For each event, the detector will determine the energy, arrival direction and the type of the primary particle. The advantage of a space-borne detector resides in the largefield of view, using a target volume of about 10 12 tons of atmosphere, far greater than what is achievable from ground. Another advantage is a nearly uniform sampling of the whole celestial sphere. The corresponding increase in statistics will help to clarify the origin and sources of UHECRs and characterize the environment traversed during their production and propagation. JEM-EUSO is a 1.1 ton refractor telescope using an optics of 2.5 m diameter Fresnel lenses to focus the UV-light from EAS on a focal surface composed of about 5000 multi-anode photomultipliers, for a total of 3x10^5 channels. A multi-layer parallel architecture handles front-end acquisition, selecting and storing valid triggers. Each processing level filters the events with increasingly complex algorithms using FPGAs and DSPs to reject spurious events and reduce thedata rate to a value compatible with downlink constraints. Abstract

Recently, several metallic materials with ultrafine-grained structures and characterized by high strength and toughness have been developed. When these ultrafine-grained materials are practically used, welding and joining processes are required. However, conventional fusion welding processes result in deterioration of the good mechanical properties of these ultrafine-grained materials due to the drastic grain growth of the ultrafine grains. On the other hand, friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process having lower heat-input than fusion welding processes, enabling formation of a fine grain structure in the stir zone. Thus, this process would effectively alleviate deterioration of mechanical properties of the ultrafine-grained materials. The authors applied FSW to ultrafine-grained Al alloys and then examined the microstructural features associated with hardness in the friction stir welds. The present paper reviews microstructural evolution of ultrafine-grained Al alloys, produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and accumulative roll-bonding (ARB), during FSW.

Abstract

We built a device that uses millimeter waves to monitor the water/ice state of samples. It consists of a 35-GHz Gunn oscillator producing an output power of about 10 mW, two horn antennas, and a power meter. We confirmed that the difference in the absorption of water and ice was significant, and we could discriminate and monitor the frozen states of water and cell medium containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). We also measured the absorption of frozen cell media containing different DMSO concentrations. These experiments demonstrate the possibility of applying millimeter waves to optimize and monitor crystal structure for various combinations of cell medium and DMSO.

Abstract

This paper presents new modulation codes to reduce the effect of adjacent track interference (ATI) also known as inter-track interference (ITI). New modulation codes, that is constructive inter-track interference (CITI) codes and partial response (PR) targets, are investigated using computer simulation in perpendicular magnetic channel. CITI codes have been found to increase the resilience of the perpendicular magnetic channel in the presence of ITI and jitter with no increased decoding complexity.

Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) was applied to an accumulative roll-bonded (ARBed) Al alloy 1100. FSW resulted in reproduction of fine grains in the stir zone and small growth of the ultrafine grains of the ARBed material just outside the stir zone. Consequently, FSW effectively prevented the softening in the ARBed alloy.

Abstract

We fabricated a new magnetic thin film sensor using a large Barkhausen effect. The sensor consists of a Ni-Fe thin film stripe, 0.7 mm by 4.6 mm, on a glass substrate and an aluminum thin film search coil of 400 turns on the other side of the substrate. The Ni-Fe thin film is a bi-layer composed of a soft magnetic layer and a semi-hard magnetic layer. The aluminum thin film search coil size is 6 mm by 10 mm; the line width and space are 5 μm. As a result, the sensor generated an induced pulse of about 1.4 mV by the large Barkhausen jump under asymmetrical ac magnetic fields in the frequency range from 1 to 100 Hz.

Abstract

JEM-EUSO is a space science mission to explore the extreme energies and physics of the Universe. Its instrument will watch the darkside of the earth and will detect UV photons emitted from the extensive air shower caused by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR above 1018 eV), or an extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) particle (e.g. above about 1020 eV). Such a high-rigidity particle as the latter arrives almost in a straight line from its origin through the magnetic fields of our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to allow us to trace the source location by its arrival direction. This can open the door to new astronomy with charged particles. In its 5 years of operation including the tilted mode, Extreme Universe Space Observatory an Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) will detect at least 1000 events with E > 7 × 1019 eV with the Greisen–Zatsepin–Ku’zmin (GZK) suppression spectrum. It can determine the energy spectrum and source locations of GZK to super-GZK regions with a statistical accuracy of several percent. JEM-EUSO is planned to be deployed by H2 transfer vehicle (HTV) and will be attached to the Japanese Experiment Module/Exposure Facility (JEM/EF) of International Space Station. JAXA has selected JEM-EUSO as one of the mission candidates of the second phase utilization of JEM/EF for launch in the early-to-mid 2010 s.

Abstract

To investigate time-interval variables of ductus venosus (DV) flow velocity waveforms (FVWs) in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), comparing the results with reference ranges from normal singleton fetuses. The impact of laser surgery and the effect of prognostic factors were also evaluated.In 107 TTTS cases, DV-FVWs of both recipients and donors were recorded 1 day before and 2 days after laser therapy. Time intervals for systolic (S) and early diastolic (D) peaks were analyzed retrospectively with regard to acceleration time (acc-S and acc-D for S and D, respectively) and deceleration time (dec-S and dec-D for S and D, respectively). For each variable, Z-scores were calculated with respect to previously reported normal reference ranges.Z-scores for all variables showed statistically significant differences from those observed previously in normal fetuses, with the exception of dec-S of donors. The most striking differences were observed in longer dec-S of recipients (P 0.001) and longer dec-D of donors (P 0.001). Laser therapy showed significant impact on dec-S and acc-D in recipients and on all variables in donors. Regarding the short-term prognosis, acc-S and dec-S showed significant differences for the prediction of intrauterine fetal demise in donors (P = 0.009 and P = 0.011, respectively).This study demonstrates that time-interval variables of DV-FVWs may differentiate the characteristic hemodynamic changes caused by unbalanced blood volume between recipients and donors.

Abstract

International audience; The abundance of 18F in Nova explosions is considered to be an important piece of information for the understanding of this astrophysical phenomenon. It is then necessary to study the nuclear processess that both produce and destroy this isotope in Novae. Among these latter reactions, the 18F(p,α)15O is one of the most important 18F destruction channels. Here we report on an experiment performed using the CRIB apparatus of the Center for Nuclear Study of the University of Tokyo. This was the first experiment that used the Trojan Horse method applied to a Radioactive Ion Beam induced reaction.

Abstract

Infiltration of various types of leucocytes has been shown to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Macrophage inflammatory protein-3 alpha (MIP-3 alpha) is a recently identified chemokine which is a selective chemoattractant for leucocytes such as memory T cells, naïve B cells and immature dendritic cells. In this study, we investigated the expression of MIP-3 alpha and its specific receptor CCR6 in the inflamed joints of patients with RA. Increased amounts of MIP-3 alpha were found by ELISA in synovial fluids (SF) of patients with RA. MIP-3 alpha was apparently detected in all synovial tissue specimens of RA patients (n = 6), but it could not be detected in that of osteoarthritis (OA) patients (n = 4). Expression of MIP-3 alpha was detected especially in the sublining layer, and infiltrating mononuclear cells in RA synovial tissue. Gene expression of MIP-3 alpha was also found in six out of 11 RA-synovial fluid cells by RT-PCR. Cultured synovial fibroblasts derived from either RA or OA patients were capable of producing MIP-3 alpha in response to IL-1 beta and TNFalpha in vitro. Furthermore, expression of CCR6 was found in infiltrating mononuclear cells in the cellular clusters and around the vessels of RA synovial tissue. These findings indicate that increased production of MIP-3 alpha may contribute to the selective recruitment of CCR6-expressing cells in RA.

Abstract

The research to develop the polarized electron source required by future linear colliders has been conducted by our collaboration. Recent advances in settling three difficult problems to realize the high polarization and high quantum efficiency, the long cathode lifetime and the multi-bunch beam generation are briefly described in this article.

Abstract

Polarized electron beam with sub-nanosecond multi-bunch structure has been "rst produced from an In-GaAs}AlGaAs strained-layer superlattice photocathode with heavy surface doping. The extracted charge of0.6]1010e~/bunch is determined by the space charge limit of the 50keV gun. The multi-bunch e!ect due to the surfacechargelimitphenomenon,whichispeculiartoanegativeelectrona$nitysurfaceofsemiconductorphotocathode,isnotobserved in the second bunch separated by 2.8ns. We conclude that a superlattice photocathode with a heavily dopedsurface is the best photocathode for the future linear colliders. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. 1. In order toachieve a high luminosity of &5]1033cm~2s~1,about 80 micro-bunches with a separation time of2.8nsmustbeproducedat150HzrepetitionrateatJapan Linear Collider (JLC). Each bunch mustcontainmorethan2]1010e~(each)()1ns width)at the source [3].The generation of such a high-intensity multi-bunch beam is not easy due to a surface chargelimit (SCL) phenomenon [4,5]. This phenomenonis peculiar to a negative electron a$nity (NEA)surface, which is a key technique for the semicon-ductorphotocathodestoextracttheopticallyexcit-edelectronsintheconductionbandtothevacuum.When a photocathode is illuminated with a high-intensity laser light, the electrons which cannotescape to the vacuum are trapped at the surfaceband bending region. The accumulated surfacecharge prevents electrons in the later portion ofthe pulse from escaping to the vacuum.In order to overcome the SCL problem, weinvestigated the multi-bunch generation using the70keVpolarizedelectronsourcesystemat NagoyaUniversity.
