Abstract

The transversely polarized solid proton target was used in 2015 and 2018 for the polarized Drell- Yan experiment at the first in the world with a 10$^8$ /s intensity of 190 GeV pion beam at COM- PASS. Because of the radiation damage, the deterioration of the proton relaxation time of NH$_3$ was observed over more than 6 months data taking period. The radiation also affected the cryogenics control system in 2015. The radiation shield was improved and any incidents on the ra- diation was not observed in 2018. The transversely polarized deuteron target will be applied in 2021 with a muon beam of 160 GeV for Transversity and Sivers parton distribution functions measurements. A cooling test of the polarized target system will be performed in 2020.

Abstract

Large samples of \Lambda, \Sigma(1385) and \Xi(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of \Sigma(1385)^+, \Sigma(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^+, \Xi(1321)^-, and \bar{\Xi}(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into \Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})\pi were measured. The heavy hyperon to \Lambda and heavy antihyperon to \bar{\Lambda} yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. They were used to tune the parameters relevant for strange particle production of the LEPTO Monte Carlo generator., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures and 3 tables, 1 Appendix with 3 figures. Abstract

Due to the vanishing quadrupole interaction only a single narrow 2.8 kHz full-width half-maximum nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) line is observed in the (LiD)-Li-6 target material for deuterium and Li-6 with spin 1. The second and fourth moments are obtained from a Memory function fit to the measured NMR signal. The values are compared to the calculations from dipole interaction between nuclei. Abstract

We have experimentally studied the first and the second moments of D, Li-6 and Li-7 (I > 1/2) NMR lines in a granulated LiD-target material as a function of nuclear polarizations and the data has been compared with a theory elaborated by Abragam, Roinel and Bouffard for monocrystalline samples. The experiments were carried out in the large COMPASS twin-target at CERN. The static local magnetic field of the polarized nuclei was measured by frequency shift between the NMR-signals in the two oppositely polarized cells and lead to the first moment, whereas the investigation of the second moment was done through Gaussian approximation. The average field magnitude in granulated material was estimated 20% larger than the value given by the calculations for monocrystalline samples of cylindrical shape. The second moment shows a qualitative agreement with the theory but it is slightly larger at the negative than at the positive polarization. Abstract

The COMPASS (NA58) experiment at CERN operates with a large solid polarized target (PT) to study the spin structure of the nucleon. The COMPASS PT system started its operation with the target material 6 LiD in 2001. Deuteron polarizations of +54.2% and −47.1% were achieved in a 3 He / 4 He dilution refrigerator at a magnetic field of 2.5 T . The equal spin temperature (EST) concept was found to hold among the deuteron, the 6 Li and the 7 Li nuclei during the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) process. The agreement with the EST concept allows the permanent monitoring of only one nuclear species by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment has been taking data since 2002. Its polarized target was upgraded during the 2005 CERN SPS shutdown. With the high acceptance magnet we obtained +56.0% and −53.0% deuteron polarization in 6LiD. In 2007 ammonia is used as a proton target which has a relaxation time of ∼4000 h at 0.6 T.

Abstract

The 10-probe NMR system for measuring the polarization in the deuterated butanol target of the Spin Muon Collaboration is presented. It is calibrated by determining the integrated spectrum in thermal equilibrium at 1 K. Thermal stabilization and control of electromagnetic interference were effective in reducing drift and electronic noise, so that high quality thermal equilibrium signals were obtained. The calibration constant was determined with a reproducibility of 2%. Systematic effects of circuit drift and of the magnetic field shift have been studied. The resulting 4.4% uncertainty of the calibration dominates the 5% overall error on the target polarization value which was typically 0.45.

Abstract

We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Abstract

The time constants τ of the spin coupling between protons and 13C‐nuclei in the SMC butanol target was measured as a function of the applied microwave power. A clear decrease of τ in the presence of a microwave field was found. This has to be related to the cross‐relaxation between the different spin species. The application for cold dark matter detection is outlined.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment in the CERN M2 beam line is using 1508 cm3 granular solid 14NH3 as polarized proton target material to study the nuclear spin with deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons. The target consists of 2.5 T solenoid and 0.63 T dipole magnets, microwave cavity and large dilution cryostat. Continuous wave NMR is used to determine the polarization of the nuclei that are polarized with dynamic nuclear polarization method using 4 mm microwaves. Determination of the target proton polarization with thermal equilibrium NMR signals at temperatures 1.0 - 1.6 K is discussed.

The strong electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of polarized targets can be used to search for axions as dark matter candidates in the range of (1–100) GHz. Once the axions are absorbed they can provide the communications gate for spin thermal contact between different nuclei that were kept artificially at different temperatures.

In an applied microwave field, the free electron spin-spin interaction reservoir in polarized target material couples strongly to the Zeeman interaction reservoirs of different nuclei. Abstract

The COMPASS collaboration performed a polarized Drell-Yan program to measure TMD (Transverse Momentum Dependent) and PDFs (Parton Distribution Functions) in 2015. The program was performed for one more year in 2018 to improve the statistics. In the Drell-Yan program a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c with an intensity of $10^8$ /s will be scattered on a transversely polarized proton target with a length of 110 cm. We also plan to use a transversely polarized deuteron target for SIDIS (Semi-Inclusive-Deep-Inelastic-Scattering) program with muon beam in 2021 just after a long shut down of the CERN accelerators. We will present the improved COMPASS PT system for the 2018 run and present the future plan of the deuteron target in 2021.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration experiment recently discovered a new isovector resonancelike signal with axial-vector quantum numbers, the a&#95;{1}(1420), decaying to f&#95;{0}(980)π. With a mass too close to and a width smaller than the axial-vector ground state a&#95;{1}(1260), it was immediately interpreted as a new light exotic meson, similar to the X, Y, Z states in the hidden-charm sector. We show that a resonancelike signal fully matching the experimental data is produced by the decay of the a&#95;{1}(1260) resonance into K^{*}(→Kπ)K[over ¯] and subsequent rescattering through a triangle singularity into the coupled f&#95;{0}(980)π channel. The amplitude for this process is calculated using a new approach based on dispersion relations. The triangle-singularity model is fitted to the partial-wave data of the COMPASS experiment. Despite having fewer parameters, this fit shows a slightly better quality than the one using a resonance hypothesis and thus eliminates the need for an additional resonance in order to describe the data. We thereby demonstrate for the first time in the light-meson sector that a resonancelike structure in the experimental data can be described by rescattering through a triangle singularity, providing evidence for a genuine three-body effect.

Abstract

The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190  GeV/c π^{-} beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3  GeV/c^{2} and 8.5  GeV/c^{2}. Within the experimental uncertainties, the observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. We present two other asymmetries originating from the pion Boer-Mulders TMD PDFs convoluted with either the nucleon transversity or pretzelosity TMD PDFs. A recent COMPASS SIDIS measurement was obtained at a hard scale comparable to that of these DY results. This opens the way for possible tests of fundamental QCD universality predictions.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190  GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15))  MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8))  MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.

Abstract

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π(-)γ→π(-)γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π(-)Ni→π(-)γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q(2)<0.0015  (GeV/c)(2). From a sample of 63,000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be α(π)=(2.0±0.6(stat)±0.7(syst))×10(-4)  fm(3) under the assumption α(π)=-β(π), which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

Abstract

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the π- γ → π- π- π+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt[s]<5m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t'<0.001  GeV2/c2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π)=sqrt[s] were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of sqrt[s] with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190  GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1  GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66  GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0))  MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42))  MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract

First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors.
