BACKGROUND: The presence of depressive symptoms in patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is an important research topic; however, the prevalence of depressive symptoms and the factors that influence their development are unclear.OBJECTIVE: To analyse the association between CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale) scores and clinical parameters such as age, disease duration, pulmonary function, imaging findings, blood data, physical functions, sleep disturbances, respiratory symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQOL).METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study of 114 patients with NTM-PD at a single centre from March 2016 to January 2021 to evaluate the relationship between CES-D scores and clinical parameters.RESULTS: Participants had a median age of 64 years; 32.5% of them had depressive symptoms. Disease duration, albumin, C-reactive protein, pulmonary function, dyspnoea, exercise capacity, respiratory symptoms, cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbances were associated with depressive symptoms. Binomial logistic regression analyses indicated that the CES-D score was significantly associated with cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbances.CONCLUSION: A high percentage of NTM-PD patients in this study experienced depressive symptoms, and these patients had abnormalities of various clinical parameters. Cough-related HRQOL and sleep disturbance had a strong influence on the development of depressive symptoms.

Thermal anomalies in the temperature dependence of the heat capacity around the superconducting transition of a hole-doped superconductor, κ–(BEDT-TTF)4Hg2.89Br8, which is known as a dimer-Mott triangle lattice system are investigated by the ac modulation technique under external pressure. To detect the electronic phase transition under applied pressure conditions for a single crystal sample, we have improved resolution of the ac modulation technique. By tracking the appropriate frequency during the temperature scan measurement, we succeed in detecting the thermal anomaly with the applied pressure of 0.3 GPa where the electronic state is located in the crossover region of non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid. Application of the external magnetic fields of H = 2 and 6 T in the in-plane direction reveals that the superconductivity in this doped triangle lattice of molecular dimers is relatively stable against the magnetic field.

Lagrangian particle tracking experiments are conducted to investigate the pathways of deep water in the North Pacific Ocean. The flow field is taken from a state-of-the-art deep circulation simulation. An unprecedented number of particles are tracked to quantify the volume transport and residence time. Half of the North Pacific deep water returns to the Southern Ocean, and its principal pathway is along the western boundary current in the Southwest Pacific Basin in the deep layer. About 30 % is exported to the Indian Ocean after upwelling to the shallow layer in the western North Pacific Ocean. The rest is transported to the Arctic Ocean through the Bering Strait or evaporates within the Pacific Ocean. Upwelling of deep water is confined in the western North Pacific Ocean owing to the strong vertical mixing. The mean residence time of deep water in the North Pacific Ocean is estimated to be several hundred years, which is considerably shorter than the conventional understandings of the deep Pacific Ocean circulation.

Background Implantation of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) for secondary prevention is fully recommended for those with an estimated survival over 1-year with a good functional status. However, we often face the difficulty to estimate the functional status and hesitate to implant ICD for patients with post-resuscitation encephalopathy. Methods There were 2391 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients transferred to 2 hospitals. We included 405 cardiovascular arrest patients, who got return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) from January 2015 to December 2018. Among the patients, 343 patients could be considered to be implanted ICD for secondary prevention according to the initial waveform or the causes of OHCA. At 1-month later, 184 patients (54%) survived. To assess the association of functional status at 30-day and 1-year, we investigated patients' characteristics, pre-hospital information and clinical findings, and evaluated the neurological outcome according to the cerebral performance category (CPC) scale. Results At 1-month later, 145 patients (79%) survived with CPC≤2, and 39 patients (21%) survived with CPC>2. Bystander CPR (P=0.009), pre-hospital ROSC (P2 at 30-day:38.5%, vs CPC≤2 at 30-day:97.2%; P2 at 30-day, only 3 patients (7.7%) of CPC=3 achieved the improvement of neurological outcome at 1-year (CPC≤2), while no patient of CPC=4 did. And one patient (2.5%) with CPC=3 was implanted ICD during the follow-up period. Twenty-five patients (64%) died of non-cardiovascular death with frailty of post-resuscitation encephalopathy after they were transferred to other hospital with the acceptation and intention of the do-not-attempt-resuscitation. Conclusions Neurological prognosis at 30-day after OHCA might be an estimator of 1-year functional status to guide us to implant ICD for secondary prevention. Background The long-term prognosis of survival in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) with coronary artery disease (CAD) remains poor. Methods There were 2391 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients transferred to 2 hospitals. We included 405 cardiovascular arrest patients, who got return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) from January 2015 to December 2018. Among them, 204 patients had CAD that caused OHCA (39%: multi-vessel disease, 19%: chronic total occlusion (CTO), 13%: vasospastic angina (VSA)). To predict mortality, we investigated patients' characteristics, pre-hospital information and findings of CAG. Results At 1-year later, 104 patients (51%) survived. Younger age (P Conclusions Younger age and pre-hospital support after OHCA with CAD were the predictors of low mortality. During a print, friction-induced vibration can occur in a toner fixing device of a recent copier and a printer. The toner fixing device comprises a fixing sleeve, a heat source, a pressure roller including an elastic layer, and a pad. The inner surface of the fixing sleeve slides on the pad. In some operational conditions, the uncomfortable noise occurs by friction-induced vibration. The purpose of this study is to clarify the generation mechanism of friction-induced vibration. The present study investigates the friction torque between the fixing sleeve and the pad and the main vibration sources experimentally. As a result of experiments, it was made clear that the noise is likely to occur in a region where the friction torque has a negative slope with respect to velocity. Further, it is clarified that the vibration mode of the fixing sleeve is the main vibration source of friction-induced vibration from the measurement of the actual operating vibration mode of the fixing sleeve and the pressure roller.

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

We measured missing mass spectrum of the ^{12}C(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η^{'} bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+p) pair associated with the η^{'}N→ηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. Summary Background & aims The associations between dietary magnesium intake and stroke and coronary heart disease (CHD) incidences are inconsistent and not established in Asian. We aimed to determine the association between dietary magnesium intake and the risk of stroke and CHD in a Japanese population. Subjects/Methods We studied 85,293 Japanese subjects by questionnaire at baseline (age 45–74 years, without cardiovascular disease or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohorts I and II, respectively). The participants were followed until the end of 2009 and 2010 in Cohorts I and II, respectively. Dietary magnesium intake was estimated from a self-administered 138-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results After 1,305,738 person-years of follow-up, 4110 strokes and 1283 cases of CHD were documented. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs, 95% confidence intervals, 95%CIs) of CHD for the fourth and fifth quintiles of dietary magnesium intake were 0.70 (0.50–0.99) and 0.66 (0.44–0.97) in men (P for trend = 0.036), respectively, and third quintile of dietary magnesium intake was 0.61 (0.39–0.96) in women (P for trend = 0.241), compared with the lowest quintile in men and women. We observed no decreased risks of incident stroke in men or women with higher dietary magnesium intakes. Conclusions Higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with a reduced risk of CHD in Japanese men.

A finding between dietary pattern and cancer may provide visions beyond the assessment of individual foods or nutrients. We examined the influence of dietary pattern with colorectal cancer (CRC) among a Japanese population.A total of 93,062 subjects (43,591 men, 49,471 women) who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study were followed from 1995-1998 to the end of 2012, during which 2482 cases of CRC (1514 men, 968 women) were newly identified. Dietary data was obtained from a validated food-frequency questionnaire between 1995 and 1998.Three dietary pattern was derived from principal components factor: prudent, westernized, and traditional pattern. After controlled for potential confounders, the prudent pattern showed a decreased association of CRC risk in men (HR for highest quintile vs lowest: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.72-1.00; P trend0.05), slightly more strongly with distal colon cancer (P trend0.05); but an increased risk of rectal cancer in women (P trend0.05). The westernized pattern showed a significant positive linear trend for colon (P trend0.05) and distal cancer (P trend0.05) in women. There was no apparent association of traditional Japanese dietary pattern on the overall or any specific sites risk of CRC.A prudent dietary pattern showed an inverse association with CRC risk in men, and a westernized pattern was related with a higher risk of colon and distal cancer in women.

The current experimental information about interactions between the \(\eta \) meson and nucleon (N) is not enough to understand the nature of the \(\eta \) meson in a nucleus. We installed a new spectrometer and started an experiment to determine the \(\eta N\) scattering parameters at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science, Tohoku University. We present the current status of the experiment.

Background Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using second generation cryoballoon (CB) ablation has become an established treatment for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients. On the other hand, PVI with radiofrequency (RF) has been an established treatment for non-PAF patients, in addition to PAF patients. Purpose The data on second generation CB ablation for non-PAF patients is limited. We assessed the application of PVI with CB for non-PAF patients and compared the outcomes of success rate, radiational time, and procedural time. Methods A total of 2632 AF patients (age 64±10; 1873 males) underwent initial PVI from September 2014 to June 2018. Second-generation CB was employed to 1587 patients (CB-PAF: 80%, CB-non-PAF: 20%) and RF using irrigation-tip catheter was employed to other 1045 patients (RF-PAF: 40%, RF-non-PAF: 60%). In CB group, PV touch-up ablation with RF was needed for 113 patients (7%) (CB-PAF: 6%, CB-non-PAF: 13%; p Results AF free survival rate was almost equivalent in both non-PAF group (2-years Kaplan-Meir event rate, CB-non-PAF 66.3%, RF-non-PAF 69.8%; log-rank p=0.297). There was significantly difference in procedural time (CB-non-PAF 132±56min, RF-non-PAF: 189±52min, p Conclusions For non-PAF patients with PV triggers, PVI with CB might be non-inferior to PVI with RF. Our study showed the efficacy of CB in terms of the shortening of procedural time, and the reduction of radiational exposure. PVI with CB for non-PAF patients was inferior to that for PAF patients.

Background Some studies reported that performing coronary angiography (CAG) for patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is effective for the prognosis and neurological outcome. However, the impact of complexity of coronary artery disease (CAD) on CAG findings has not been evaluated sufficiently. Purpose We sought to investigate the complexity of CAD to predict the prognosis and neurological outcome in patients with OHCA. Methods A total of 1382 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients were transferred to our critical care center, of which 252 cardiovascular arrest patients achieving the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) were extracted from the institutional consecutive database between January 2015 and December 2018. Among those patients, we performed CAG for 160 patients. To predict mortality in hospital and neurological outcome at 30 days, we investigated basic patients' characteristics, pre-hospital information, coronary anatomical angiographical findings. Results Ventricular fibrillation (VF) (P=0.001), younger age (P=0.007), pre-hospital ROSC (P Conclusions OHCA patients with any coronary stenosis had high mortality and bad neurological outcome in comparison with those who had normal coronary arteries. OHCA patients with CAD had complex lesions such as multi-vessel disease or chronic total occlusion lesions. The coronary complexity in patients with OHCA was a predictor of in-hospital 30-days mortality. However, pre-hospital care such as bystander CPR and pre-hospital ROSC were the most important to achieve good neurological outcome at 30 days in the present study.

Background The prognosis of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains poor. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most frequent cause of OHCA. The prompt evaluation and revascularization for coronary artery in OHCA patients with ST-segment elevation are recommended because they often have CAD. However, OHCA patients without ST-segment elevation also have any coronary stenosis in the non-negligible proportion. The predictor of mortality and neurological outcome in OHCA patients with no ST-segment elevation has not been sufficiently elucidated. Purpose We sought to investigate the predictor of mortality and neurological outcome at 30 days in OHCA patients without ST-segment elevation. Methods A total of 1382 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients were transferred to our critical care center, of which 252 cardiovascular arrest patients achieving the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) were extracted from the institutional consecutive database between January 2015 and December 2018. CAD past history and complex CAD was associated with mortality. Pre-hospital information such as pre-hospital ROSC was important to achieve good neurological outcome.

Background Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using radiofrequency (RF) or cryoballoon (CB) has been an established treatment for atrial fibrillation. PVI using RF is the most common method with a rather complex technique of a point-by-point tissue heating and navigation of electro-anatomical-guided mapping system, and PVI with CB is also the common method with a relatively simple technique of freezing balloon occlusion. These 2 types of ablation are comparable in terms of the efficacy of the PVI procedure. Purpose The data on the clinical outcome of each AF type with PV triggers has been limited. We compared the outcome of success rate between RF and CB group with respect to each AF type, and further assessed the efficacy of pulmonary vein isolation for AF patients with the origin of only PV. Methods A total of 3402 AF patients (age 64±11; 2463 males) underwent initial PVI from May 2009 to July 2018 (PAF: 67%, non-PAF: 37%). Radiofrequency using irrigation-tip catheter was employed to 1796 patients since May 2009 (RF-PAF: 55%, RF-non-PAF: 45%). Second-generation cryoballoon was employed to other 1606 patients since September 2014 (CB-PAF: 81%, CB-non-PAF: 19%). Background Fluoroquinolones are a popular alternative to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections. Objectives To compare the effects of fluoroquinolones and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole on mortality of S. maltophilia infections. Data sources PubMed and EMBASE. Study eligibility criteria Clinical studies reporting mortality outcomes of S. maltophilia infections. Participants Patients with clinical infections caused by S. maltophilia. Interventions Fluoroquinolone monotherapy in comparison with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole monotherapy. Methods Systematic review with meta-analysis technique. Results Seven retrospective cohort and seven case–control studies were included. Three cohort studies were designed to compare the two drugs, whereas others had other purposes. A total of 663 patients were identified, 332 of which were treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (50.1%) and 331 with fluoroquinolones (49.9%). Three cohort studies were designed to compare the effect of the two drugs, whereas the others had other purposes. Levofloxacin was most frequently used among fluoroquinolones (187/331, 56.5%), followed by ciprofloxacin (114/331, 34.4%). The overall mortality rate was 29.6%. Using pooled ORs for the mortality of each study, fluoroquinolone treatment (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.39–0.99) was associated with survival benefit over trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment, with low heterogeneity (I2 = 18%). Specific fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.17–1.12) and levofloxacin (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.48–1.26) did not show a significant difference in comparison with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In the sub-group analyses of adult and bacteraemic patients, significant differences in mortality were not observed between fluoroquinolones and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Conclusions Based on a meta-analysis of non-randomized studies, fluoroquinolones demonstrated comparable effects on mortality of S. maltophilia infection to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, supporting the use of fluoroquinolones in clinical S. maltophilia infections. Although the pooled analysis of overall studies favoured fluoroquinolones over trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, the studies included were observational, and sub-group analyses of certain fluoroquinolone agents did not show statistical differences with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Randomized clinical studies are needed to address these issues.

Summary We propose a new workflow for borehole image interpretation incorporating machine learning methods and recent cloud technologies. In order to predict facies from borehole image, clean labels, i.e. the borehole image with annotated facies intervals, must be collected. We propose a solution to accelerate the labelling process by introducing an automatic segmentation and unsupervised learning algorithm based on image texture features. We then present a web based application and pipeline from the user interface to the cloud database that allows the user to easily construct and update the digital facies library and we show first results of our automated image recognition.

Aims Coping strategies may be significantly associated with health outcomes. This is the first study to investigate the association between baseline coping strategies and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality in a general population cohort. Methods and results The Japan Public Health Center-based prospective Study asked questions on coping in its third follow-up survey (2000–04). Analyses on CVD incidence and mortality included 57 017 subjects aged 50–79 without a history of CVD and who provided complete answers on approach- and avoidance-oriented coping behaviours and strategies. Cox regression models, adjusted for confounders, were used to determine hazard ratios (HRs) according to coping style. Mean follow-up time was 7.9 years for incidence and 8.0 years for mortality. The premorbid use of an approach-oriented coping strategy was inversely associated with incidence of stroke (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73–1.00) and CVD mortality (HR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.55–0.99). Stroke subtype analyses revealed an inverse association between the approach-oriented coping strategy and incidence of ischaemic stroke (HR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64–0.98) and a positive association between the combined coping strategy and incidence of intra-parenchymal haemorrhage (HR = 2.03; 95% CI, 1.01–4.10). Utilizing an avoidance coping strategy was associated with increased mortality from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) only in hypertensive individuals (HR = 3.46; 95% CI, 1.07–11.18). The coping behaviours fantasizing and positive reappraisal were associated with increased risk of CVD incidence (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 1.03–1.50) and reduced risk of IHD mortality (HR = 0.63; 95% CI, 0.40–0.99), respectively. Conclusion An approach-oriented coping strategy, i.e. proactively dealing with sources of stress, may be associated with significantly reduced stroke incidence and CVD mortality in a Japanese population-based cohort.

Background and aims Higher intake of fish or n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, it is unclear whether increased blood levels of n-3 PUFAs are associated with reduced risk of CHD in the Japanese population. Methods The relationship between circulating levels of n-3 PUFAs (eicosapentaenoic acid + docosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid) and risk of CHD was examined in a nested case-control study among participants in the Japan Public Health Center (JPHC)-based Study Cohort. Plasma n-3 PUFA phospholipid levels were measured at baseline by gas chromatography in 209 cases with CHD and 418 controls matched for sex, age, date of blood draw, time elapsed since last meal before blood collection, and study location. The CHD cases (n = 209) comprised 168 cases of myocardial infarction and 41 of sudden cardiac death, otherwise classified as 157 non-fatal and 52 fatal coronary events, respectively. Mean duration of follow-up was 13.5 years. Results Multivariate conditional logistic analysis showed no significant association between n-3 PUFAs and risk of total CHD. The odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus lowest quartiles of plasma n-3 PUFAs was 0.79 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.41–1.51, p for trend = 0.51). Subtype analysis of CHD revealed that the multivariate ORs for the highest versus lowest quartiles for n-3 PUFAs were 0.91 (95% CI: 0.43–1.89, p for trend = 0.90) for myocardial infarction, 0.08 (95% CI: 0.01–0.88, p for trend = 0.04) for sudden cardiac death, 0.89 (95% CI: 0.42–1.89, p for trend = 0.97) for nonfatal coronary events, and 0.12 (95% CI: 0.02–0.75, p for trend = 0.03) for fatal coronary events. Conclusions Plasma n-3 PUFA levels were not associated with risk of total CHD but were inversely associated with risks of sudden cardiac death and fatal coronary events among middle-aged Japanese individuals.

Seafood/fish intake has been regarded as a protective factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), while smoking is a strong risk factor. To examine whether associations between smoking and risk of CHD are modified by seafood/fish intake, we studied 72,012 Japanese men and women aged 45-74 years who completed 2 food frequency questionnaires, 5 years apart, during the period 1995-2009. We report on dynamics of superconducting vortices driven by a radial current in a Corbino disk, where the vortices rotate around the center of the sample by feeling a frustrated Lorentz force inversely proportional to the radius. Based on a mode-locking resonance, we have revealed the formation of rotating vortex rings composed of triangular-lattice arrays. Both at high (4.1 K) and low (2.1 K) temperatures, we have observed the change in the lattice orientation with respect to the flow direction under decreasing field.

In order to understand the effects of the wall permeability on turbulence near a porous wall, flow field measurements are carried out for turbulent flows in a channel with a porous bottom wall by a two-component particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. The porous media used are three kinds of foamed ceramics which have almost the same porosity (∼0.8) but different permeability. It is confirmed that the flow becomes more turbulent over the porous wall and tends to be turbulent even at the bulk Reynolds number of Re b = 1300 in the most permeable wall case tested. Corresponding to laminar to turbulent transition, the magnitude of the slip velocity on the porous wall is found to increase drastically in a narrow range of the Reynolds number. To discuss the effects of the wall roughness and the wall permeability, detailed discussions are made of zero-plane displacement and equivalent wall roughness for porous media. The results clearly indicate that the turbulence is induced by not only the wall roughness but the wall permeability. The measurements have also revealed that as Re b or the wall permeability increases, the wall normal fluctuating velocity near the porous wall is enhanced due to the effects of the wall permeability. This leads to the increase of the turbulent shear stress resulting in higher friction factors of turbulence over porous walls.

Thermodynamic discussion on the physical properties around the Mott boundary of the dimer-Mott system of [Formula: see text]-type (BEDT-TTF)2X system, where BEDT-TTF is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and X denotes monovalent counter anions is performed by heat capacity measurements of the [Formula: see text]-(d[n,n] BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br of which donor molecules are partially deuterated. We compare temperature dependences of heat capacity of d[2,2], d[3,3] and d[4,4] compounds (defined as shown in Fig. 1) obtained in rapidly cooled and slowly cooled conditions. While the heat capacity of d[2,2] compound shows cooling rate dependence with the slight change of the absolute values Cp between 25 K and 50 K, the temperature dependences of the other compounds do not give drastic change by changing the cooling rate. The compounds of d[2,2] and d[3,3] located very close to the Mott boundary show peculiar hump structure in the C[Formula: see text]T[Formula: see text] that is related to the existence of a kind of lattice instability region around the first-order phase boundary. The temperature and chemical pressure dependences of the anomalous region are discussed in terms of the phase diagram in which the Mott boundary has peculiar rounding at low-temperature region.

Construction of a calorimetry system, by which the light irradiation to the surface area of molecular crystals at extremely low temperatures can be possible is reported. The development was performed based on the relaxation calorimetry technique to evaluate electronic structure using small amount of samples of molecular compounds where the electron correlation effects and electron–lattice coupling effects induce drastic change of the ground state. Detection of electronic structure changes occur as the light-induced phenomena becomes possible by this type of calorimetry apparatus. We report on the detailed structure of the small-sized calorimetry cells constructed for this purpose as well as the design of the calorimeter. The experimental results using organic superconductor and magnetic materials are given, which substantiate that the absolute value measurements under light irradiation are promising using the developed systems. Further possibility is also discussed.

The forest and wood industry in Japan require the development of automation technology to produce high-quality lumber from medium-quality sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) logs. This study investigates the influence of pith location on the warp of lumber. While drying reduced the bow of lumber drastically its crook remained almost unchanged. Therefore, an effective sawing method to reduce crook was sought after. Crook measured immediately after sawing increased as the distance between the center of the lumber and the pith location along the width of lumber increased. A sawing method which takes pith location into account was concluded to be effective in reducing crook. Based on these results, a new sophisticated sawing procedure to produce high-quality lumber is proposed.
