Abstract

Abstract JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

2. Development of a high-efficiency and wide-irradiation coil for transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy at home

Abstract

To perform transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy at home, a stimulation coil that is robust against misalignment must be employed. A dome-shaped coil is one such coil; however, it has the disadvantage that the induced electric field is smaller than that of the conventional figure-8 coil. In this study, we developed a double D-shaped coil with a horizontal return path to suppress the influence of the return current, while reducing the inductance of the coil. After optimizing geometric parameters of the double D-shaped coil through numerical simulations, we fabricated the coil and evaluated its performance on healthy subjects. It was confirmed that the developed coil was found to tolerate a wider range of positioning errors than the figure-8 coil when stimulating the motor cortex.

Abstract

Introduction Cloninger divides personality into temperament and character, proposing that temperament is innate and character is shaped by environment. With the development of noninvasive methods for measuring central nervous system activity, there have been many attempts to test personality theories using neuroscientific research methods. Thus, the use of neuroscience to examine existing theories of personality will enable a review of these theories and may lead to the formulation of new theories of personality. Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the biological factors underlying temperament and personality development in healthy adults by analyzing neural networks in the brain using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Methods The study was conducted after obtaining prior approval from the Ethics Committee of Kanazawa Medical University. Eighty-one healthy subjects who consented to the study after explaining the purpose and methods were imaged with a 3T MRI scanner in the resting state, and statistical image analysis was performed using the CONN toolbox. Personality and temperament were assessed using the temperament personality test based on Cloninger’s 7-dimensional model of personality. Results Five types of neural networks were extracted by independent component analysis, including Salience, Default mode, and Language. Regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between the functional connectivity of the networks and temperament/personality traits. Conclusions We were able to observe the functional connectivity of representative neural networks from the data of healthy subjects, suggesting that individual differences in the degree of functional connectivity of neural networks may be related to the individual characteristics of temperament and personality of the subjects. Abstract

International audience; The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^{2}$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5μ s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^{∘}$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

Abstract

Summary The porosity of the shallow soil layers is a crucial information in hydrogeology, soil science, agriculture, and construction engineering. To resolve the spatial distribution of porosity in soil, 3D elastic full waveform inversion (FWI) can be a promising tool. In this research, we have tested 3D FWI on a realistic subsoil model constructed from field-measured data. Different source types, dominant frequency of the seismic source, and the inversion frequency have been examined on the synthetic dataset. Our results suggest that (1) the use of SH and Love waves leads to a higher accuracy compared to P-SV or Rayleigh waves, and (2) the use of a broader frequency range in inversion and/or a source wavelet of higher dominant frequency leads to more accurate and better resolved Vs and bulk-density models. Finally, the porosity values for the different layers have been estimated from the inverted bulk density profile. Our results indicate that 3D FWI has the potential to estimate reasonably accurately the Vs and density profiles, which can in turn offer 3D porosity distribution.

Abstract

An early assessment of rebar corrosion occurring in reinforced concrete is discussed. Acoustic emission (AE) method and the detection of electrochemical noise (EN) techniques are applied as nondestructive testing. In the AE method, we focus on elastic waves caused by oxide-film exfoliated on the surface of rebar due to corrosion. Detecting EN parameters, the weak charge fluctuation due to the oxidation–reduction reaction is observed in the corrosion process. In experiments, variations of the measured results in both methods are correlated with the progressive exfoliation of the oxide film. Rebar corrosion is generated by electrical charge and is continuously monitored by both methods. It is confirmed that characteristic behaviors in both AE activities and EN parameters are elucidated in good association with exfoliation by continuous monitoring.

Abstract

Background DS-8201a is a HER2 targeting antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) with high drug to antibody ratio (8:1), a novel linker and topoisomerase I inhibitor as the payload. In preclinical studies, DS-8201a showed efficacy against both trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) resistant HER2 positive breast cancer (BC) and against BC with low HER2 expression. The current phase 1 trial is comprised of dose escalation (Part 1) and dose expansion (Part 2) cohorts including patients (pts) with BC, gastric cancer and other HER2 expressing tumors. Only the results from BC cohorts are presented here. Methods Part 1 used a modified continual reassessment model to identify the recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D) of DS8201a in pts with BC or gastric cancer of any HER2 status. Two out of planned 4 expansion cohorts included BC: T-DM1-treated HER2 positive BC (Cohort 2a; IHC 3+ or IHC 2+/ISH +) and HER2 low BC (Cohort 2c, IHC 2+/ISH- or IHC 1+). Efficacy endpoints of objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR: CR + PR + SD), durability of response, progression free survival (PFS) and adverse events (AEs) were assessed. Results Overall, 146 subjects were included (24 Part 1; 122 Part 2). DS-8201a was administered up to 8.0 mg/kg in Part 1 without any DLTs, maximum tolerated dose was not reached. Based on available results, the dose levels of 5.4 and 6.4 mg/kg IV every 3 weeks were chosen for Part 2. In Part 2, a total of 56 BC pts were enrolled; 46 pts in Cohort 2a and 10 pts in Cohort 2c. The median age was 56 and number of prior regimens in the metastatic setting was 5 (range: 1-16). 37 BC pts had follow-up imaging scans and were evaluable for response at the time of data cutoff. Confirmed ORR was 41% (15/37) including 1 CR; DCR was 97% (36/37). The median duration of treatment was not reached. For Cohort 2a, where all pts had received prior T-DM1, treatment with DS-8201a achieved a higher ORR of 41% (11/27) and DCR of 100% (27/27) compared to the reported response these patients had to their prior T-DM1 treatment with ORR of 23% (5/22) and DCR of 73% (16/22). In the subset of 24 pts from cohort 2a who had received prior treatment with pertuzumab and T-DM1, the confirmed ORR was 44% (11/25). In Cohort 2c, confirmed ORR was 40% (4/10), DCR was 90% (9/10). Of the 46 BC pts in Part 2 who received at least one dose of DS-8201a, 4 pts discontinued treatment due to disease progression and 3 pts discontinued due to AE. The most common AEs of any grades were nausea, decreased appetite, vomiting, alopecia, and diarrhea. Only 2 pts experienced grade 4 AEs (thrombocytopenia and neutropenia) and 46 % (21/46) experienced grade 3 AEs (most commonly anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, lymphocytepenia, and vomiting). Conclusions DS-8201a was well tolerated and has significant activity in pts with T-DM1 and T-DM1/ pertuzumab pretreated HER2 positive BC and in pts with HER2 low BC, with durable disease control. Promising efficacy of this ADC in BC warrants further investigation. Abstract

9058 Background: Datopotamab deruxtecan (Dato-DXd; DS-1062) is an ADC composed of a humanized anti-TROP2 IgG1 monoclonal antibody conjugated to a topoisomerase I inhibitor via a tetrapeptide-based cleavable linker. Methods: TROPION-PanTumor01 (NCT03401385) is a multicenter dose-escalation/expansion study evaluating Dato-DXd administered Q3W in patients (pts) with advanced NSCLC (since expanded to other tumor types, excluded from this analysis). Efficacy and safety were evaluated in 175 pts for dose analysis. Pharmacometric analyses (population pharmacokinetics [popPK] and exposure-response modeling) were conducted across doses to inform dose selection for further development. Results: At data cutoff (Sept 4, 2020), median follow-up was 7.4 mo (range, 0.10-21.7 mo). Select all-grade TEAEs were 1.5- to 2-fold higher in the 8 mg/kg vs 4 and 6 mg/kg cohorts: vomiting (34% vs 12% and 18%), anemia (28% vs 4% and 16%), diarrhea (20% vs 6% and 11%), and mucositis (29% vs 6% and 13%). Rates of grade ≥3 drug-related TEAEs and serious drug-related TEAEs were ≥2-fold higher with the 8 mg/kg dose (n = 80; 34% and 20%) relative to the 4 mg/kg (n = 50; 10% and 8%) and 6 mg/kg (n = 45; 16% and 9%) doses. Rates of drug-related interstitial lung disease (ILD), as determined by an independent adjudication committee, were higher in the 8 mg/kg cohort (15% vs 2% and 2% in the 4 and 6 mg/kg cohorts); 3 pts in the 8 mg/kg cohort experienced grade 5 ILD. Dose interruptions and reductions due to TEAEs increased with dose (4 mg/kg: 4% and 2%; 6 mg/kg: 20% and 9%; 8 mg/kg: 20% and 31%). More pts in the 8 mg/kg cohort discontinued Tx early due to AEs (15%) compared with those in the 4 mg/kg (4%) and 6 mg/kg (7%) cohorts. ORRs determined by blinded independent central review were similar: 8 mg/kg, 25% (20/80); 6 mg/kg, 21% (8/39); and 4 mg/kg, 23% (9/40). Preliminary median PFS (95% CI) was 5.4 mo (4.1-7.1 mo) in the 8 mg/kg cohort, 8.2 mo (1.5-11.8 mo) in the 6 mg/kg cohort, and 4.3 mo (2.0 mo-NE) in the 4 mg/kg cohort. PFS was limited by early censoring due to immature duration of follow-up, with the majority of pts having ≤3 mo of follow-up in the 4 (66%) and 6 mg/kg (67%) cohorts vs 8 mg/kg (46%) cohort. In pharmacometric analyses, tumor-size change from baseline and probability of complete response/partial response positively correlated with exposure (AUC) of Dato-DXd. Incidences of dose reduction and grade ≥2 stomatitis/mucositis were also positively correlated with exposure; projected probabilities in a virtual population bootstrapped from pts with NSCLC in the popPK data confirmed these trends. Updated results will be presented. Conclusions: A Dato-DXd dose of 6 mg/kg was selected for the randomized, phase 3, TROPION-Lung01 trial (NCT04656652) based on better tolerance and improved efficacy, including a trend toward increased PFS. Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

Background In an ongoing phase 1 study (J101) of [fam-] trastuzumab deruxtecan (DS-8201a), a novel HER2-targeted antibody drug conjugate, 5.4 and 6.4 mg/kg doses were recommended for expansion. The phase 2 DESTINY-Breast01 trial began with a dose-finding stage. To determine the recommended dose for continued development in HER2+ BC, a comprehensive analysis of observed data and exposure-response (ER) from both trials was performed. Methods A population-PK (PPK) model was developed including all subjects with available PK data. Individual PK parameters were estimated from the PPK model and used in the ER analyses, using logistic regression or Cox proportional hazard modeling for efficacy and safety. Results As of Apr 2018, 111 HER2+ BC subjects were treated at 5.4 or 6.4 mg/kg in J101 and 65 subjects were enrolled across 3 doses (5.4, 6.4, and 7.4 mg/kg) in DESTINY-Breast01. Confirmed objective response rates (ORRs) at 5.4 and 6.4 mg/kg in J101 were 52.6% (20/38) and 55.7% (34/61), respectively. In J101, grade ≥3 AEs occurred in 35.6% (16/45) at 5.4 mg/kg and 50% (33/66) at 6.4 mg/kg. The relationship between intact Cmin and ORR was statistically significant (P = 0.035). There was a trend for improved progression-free survival with higher intact exposures (P = 0.238). There were statistically significant relationships between exposures and the following safety endpoints based on logistic regression: neutropenia (any grade, P = 0.003; grade ≥3, P = 0.037), anemia (any grade, P = 0.002; grade ≥3, P Conclusions Considering the predicted benefit/risk profile, 5.4 mg/kg is the recommended dose for continued development in HER2+ BC.

Abstract

Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Abstract

Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been linked to differences in the volume of certain areas of the brain and to variants in the piccolo presynaptic cytomatrix protein (PCLO), but the relationship between PCLO and brain morphology has not been studied. A single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in PCLO, rs2522833, is thought to affect protein stability and the activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. We investigated the relationship between cortical volume and this SNP in first-episode, drug-naive patients with MDD or healthy control subjects. Seventy-eight participants, including 30 patients with MDD and 48 healthy control subjects, were recruited via interview. PCLO rs2522833 genotyping and plasma cortisol assays were performed, and gray matter volume was estimated using structural magnetic resonance images. Among the individuals carrying the C-allele of PCLO rs2522833, the volume of the left temporal pole was significantly smaller in those with MDD than in healthy controls (family-wise error-corrected, P=0.003). No differences were detected in other brain regions. In addition, the C-carriers showed a larger volume reduction in the left temporal pole than those in the individuals with A/A genotype (P=0.0099). Plasma cortisol levels were significantly higher in MDD-affected C-carriers than in the healthy control C-carriers (12.76±6.10 vs 9.31±3.60 nm, P=0.045). We conclude that PCLO SNP rs2522833 is associated with a gray matter volume reduction in the left temporal pole in drug-naive, first-episode patients with MDD carrying the C-allele.

Abstract

Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an electronic personal dosimeter 'D-shuttle' for two weeks, and kept a journal of his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of estimated annual doses due to the terrestrial background radiation level of other regions/countries. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

Concrete structures could suffer from the corrosion of reinforcing steel bars (rebars) because of the penetration of chloride ions. For crack detection and damage evaluation in concrete, acoustic emission (AE) techniques have been extensively applied to concrete and concrete structures. In the corrosion process of reinforced concrete, it is demonstrated that continuous AE monitoring is available to identify the onset of corrosion and the nucleation of concrete cracking because of the expansion of corrosion products. At the latter stage, the expansion of corrosion products generates corrosion-induced cracks in concrete. The generating mechanisms of these cracks are studied in accelerated corrosion tests of reinforced concrete beams. Kinematics of microcracks are identified by SiGMA (Simplified Green’s functions for Moment tensor Analysis) analysis of AE. It is demonstrated that AE activity at the onset of corrosion and at the nucleation of corrosion-induced cracks is in remarkable agreement with the phenomenological model of the corrosion process in steel. Then, mechanisms of corrosion-induced cracks are visually and quantitatively investigated by the SiGMA analysis.

Abstract

For the purpose of a nationwide surveillance of the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial respiratory pathogens in patients in Japan, the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy conducted their second year survey, during the period from January to August, 2007. A total of 1178 strains were collected from clinical specimens obtained from adult patients with well-diagnosed respiratory tract infections. Susceptibility testing was evaluable for 1108 strains (226 Staphylococcus aureus, 257 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 6 Streptococcus pyogenes, 206 Haemophilus influenzae, 120 Moraxella catarrhalis, 122 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 171 Pseudomonas aeruginosa). A total of 44 antibacterial agents, including 26 beta-lactams (four penicillins, three penicillins in combination with beta-lactamase inhibitors, four oral cephems, eight parenteral cephems, one monobactam, five carbapenems, and one penem), three aminoglycosides, four macrolides (including ketolide), one lincosamide, one tetracycline, two glycopeptides, six fluoroquinolones, and one oxazolidinone were used for the study. Analysis was conducted at the central reference laboratory according to the method recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The incidence of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was high, at 59.7%, and the incidences of penicillin-intermediateresistant and -resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PISP and PRSP) were 30.4% and 5.1%, respectively. Among Haemophilus influenzae strains, 19.9% of them were found to be beta-lactamase-non-producing ampicillin (ABPC)-intermediately-resistant (BLNAI), 29.1% to be beta-lactamasenon-producing ABPC-resistant (BLNAR), and 6.7% to be beta-lactamase-producing ABPC-resistant (BLPAR) strains. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae was not isolated. Two isolates (1.2%) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were found to be metallo-beta-lactamase-producing strains, including one (0.6%) suspected multidrug-resistant strain showing resistance to imipenem, amikacin, and ciprofloxacin. These data will be a useful reference for future periodic surveillance studies and for investigations to control resistant infections as well. Continued surveillance is required to prevent the further spread of these antimicrobial resistances.

Abstract

Low-temperature properties of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CePd 2 In were investigated by muon-spin relaxation in zero external magnetic field (ZF- μ SR ). The time spectra below 1.2 K reveal the muon-spin oscillation characteristic of a magnetically ordered state with very small ordered Ce moments. Based on our μ SR data we discuss possible magnetic structures and compare them with the previous suggestions.

Abstract

The Japanese Society of Chemotherapy (JSC) conducted the first nationwide surveillance of bacterial respiratory pathogens during the period from January to August 2006. With the cooperation of 32 medical institutions throughout Japan, a total of 924 strains belonging to seven clinically relevant bacterial species were collected from adult patients with well-diagnosed respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the 887 evaluable strains (205 Staphylococcus aureus, 200 Streptococcus pneumoniae, 9 Streptococcus pyogenes, 165 Haemophilus influenzae, 91 Moraxella catarrhalis, 74 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 143 Pseudomonas aeruginosa) to 42 antibacterial agents was conducted at the Central Laboratory of the Research Center for Anti-infective Drugs of the Kitasato Institute, according to recommendations issued by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). The antibacterial agents employed were 25 beta-lactams, three aminoglycosides, four macrolides (including one azalide and one ketolide), one lincosamide, one tetracycline, two glycopeptides, five fluoroquinolones, and one oxazolidinone. The incidence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was 63.4%, and the incidences of penicillin-intermediately resistant S. pneumoniae (PISP) and penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) were 35.0% and 4.0%, respectively. Among H. influenzae, 21.2% of the strains were found to be beta-lactamase-nonproducing ampicillin (ABPC)-intermediately resistant (BLNAI), 29.1% to be beta-lactamase-nonproducing ABPC-resistant (BLNAR), and 4.8% to be beta-lactamaseproducing ABPC-resistant (BLPAR) strains. The incidence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing K. pneumoniae was 2.7% (2 of 74 strains). Three (2.1%) of the 143 P. aeruginosa strains were found to be metallo-beta-lactamaseproducing, including 1 (0.7%) multidrug-resistant strain. Through the nationwide surveillance, we obtained fundamental antimicrobial susceptibility data of clinically relevant bacterial pathogens in adult RTI to various antibacterial agents. These data will be a useful reference for future periodic surveillance studies, as well as for investigations to control antimicrobial-resistant pathogens.

Abstract

Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract

We have investigated boron cluster implantation for ultra-shallow junction formation in transistors with gate lengths of ∼60 nm. The use of large boron containing clusters is more advantageous than B+ or BF 2 + implantation from the viewpoint of throughput and energy contamination. Ion implantation of B 18 H X + cluster ions, produced by ionizing B18H22 (octadecaborane) vapor, was employed to fabricate the p-type SDE (source/drain extensions) of pMOSFETs. B 18 H X + implants with the energy and dose adjusted to produce equivalent projected range and B concentration as compared to conventional B+ implants were carried out using a traditional implanter retrofitted with a SemEquip ClusterIon® Source. The results on blank wafers and transistor performance on test pattern wafers were compared to standard monomer B+ implants. Analysis of the blank wafers indicated that B 18 H X + showed the same or better characteristics than B+ in junction depth and sheet resistance. Post-processing electrical measurements of the pMOSFETs implanted with B 18 H X + showed that they performed with nearly identical characteristics as ones implanted with B+.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the difference between air displacement plethysmograph (ADP) and bioelectrical impedance (BI) for assessing body composition changes during weight loss in Japanese women. Design: Cross-sectional and longitudinal investigation study. Subjects: In a first cross-sectional study, we used data of 7380 Japanese women aged 14–83 years [body mass index (BMI): 22.6 ± 3.7 kg/m2] at baseline. Among the participants, we used data of 54 women (BMI: 25.9 ± 3.9 kg/m2) for a 5-month follow-up study. Measurements: Body fat percentage was evaluated by ADP and BI, and body fat (kg) and lean body mass (kg) were calculated. Anthropometric parameters, such as height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist hip ratio, were also measured. In a second longitudinal study, they were also investigated before and after the study. Results: In a first cross-sectional study, body fat percentage was 31.2 ± 7.0% in ADP and 25.7 ± 6.8% in BI.
