1. Simulations of the stationary Q = 10 and the exit phase from the flat-top of an ITER 15MA baseline scenario: predictive JINTRAC simulation with a consistent treatment of D and T in the whole plasma

Abstract

Designing a robust termination scenario for a burning ITER plasma is a challenge that requires extensive core plasma and divertor modelling. The presented work consists of coupled core/edge/SOL/divertor simulations, performed with the JINTRAC code, to study the Q = 10 flat-top phase and exit phase of the ITER 15 MA/5.3 T DT scenario. The modelling utilizes the recently implemented option to treat deuterium and tritium separately in the SOL/divertor, enabling a consistent treatment of deuterium and tritium in the whole plasma volume, which is a unique capability of JINTRAC. In addition, these are the first JINTRAC simulations of this scenario that use a first-principles transport model to self-consistently model the ECRH power deposition and to include tungsten while keeping track of tungsten sputtering and accumulation. The flat-top simulations demonstrate the possibility of sustaining a steady state fusion Q of 10 using pure deuterium gas puffs together with DT mixed pellets, which is an option to make a more effective use of tritium. Simulations of the exit phase are set up sequentially, with each phase providing initial conditions for the next, starting with a density decay at full current and auxiliary power, and demonstrate the possibility of reducing the density robustly within a few seconds. Following the density decay, a subsequent auxiliary power ramp-down in H-mode is performed with a late H–L transition at low auxiliary power, which may provide an option for the optimization of the plasma termination. The final ramp-down phase consists of a current ramp-down in L-mode to 3.75 MA.

3. How does training in anesthesia residency shape residents’ approaches to patient care handoffs? A single-center qualitative interview study

Abstract

Abstract Background Handoffs are a complex procedure whose success relies on mutual discussion rather than simple information transfer. Particularly among trainees, handoffs present major opportunities for medical error. Previous research has explored best practices and pitfalls in general handoff education but has not discussed barriers specific to anesthesiology residents. This study characterizes the experiences of residents in anesthesiology as they learn handoff technique in order to inform strategies for teaching this important component of perioperative care. Methods: In 2016, we conducted a semi-structured interview study of 30 anesthesia residents across all three postgraduate years at a major academic hospital. Interviews were coded by two coders using a grounded theory approach and an iterative process designed to enhance reliability and validity. Results Residents cited lack of consistency as a major impediment to proper handoff education. They found the impact of lectures and written materials to be limited. The level of guidance and direction they received from one-to-one attendings was described as highly variable. Residents’ comfort in executing handoffs was heavily dependent on location and situation. They felt that coordination among the parties involved in the handoff was difficult to achieve, causing confusion about the importance of handoffs as well as proper protocol. Finally, residents offered opinions on when handoff education should occur during the residency and had several recommendations for its improving, including standardization of key handoff topics. Conclusions In a single center study of anesthesiology resident handoff education, residents exhibited confusion related to a perceived disconnect between the stated importance of effective handoffs and a lack of consensus on proper handoff technique. Standardization of curriculum and framing expectations has the potential to enhance resident handoff training in academic anesthesia departments.

Abstract

CONTEXT Residency programmes invest considerable time and resources in candidate interviews as a result of their perceived ability to reveal important social traits. However, studies examining the ability of interviews to predict resident performance have shown mixed findings, and the role of the interview in candidate evaluation remains unclear. This mixed-methods study, conducted in an anaesthesiology residency programme at a large academic medical centre, examined how interviews contributed to candidate assessment and whether the addition of behavioural questions to interviews altered their role in the evaluation process. METHODS During the 2018-2019 residency selection season in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania, independent ratings for each interviewee were collected from faculty interviewers. Consensus ratings subsequently established by committee were also collected. Committee meetings were audiorecorded and transcribed for qualitative analysis. Behavioural questions were integrated into half of interview days. Ratings of candidates interviewed on behavioural question days were compared statistically with those of candidates interviewed on non-behavioural question days. RESULTS Qualitative analysis showed that interviewers heavily emphasised candidates' application files in evaluating the interviews. Interviewers focused on candidates' academic records and favoured candidates whose interview behaviours were consistent with their applications and whose applications demonstrated similarities to interviewers' traits. The addition of behavioural questions demonstrated little ability to alter these dynamics. Quantitatively, there were no significant differences in candidate rating outcomes between behavioural and non-behavioural interviewing days, whereas a higher medical school rating and higher score on the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 were associated with a more favourable consensus rating. CONCLUSIONS Residency candidates' application files predisposed interviewers' experience and evaluation of interviews, preventing the interviews from providing discrete assessments of interpersonal qualities, even when behavioural questions were included. In the continued effort to perform well-rounded assessments of residency candidates, further research and reflection on the role of interviewing in evaluation are necessary.

6. Improving Formative Feedback in the Operating Room Setting: Developing and Implementing an Initiative to Improve Feedback Quality and Culture

Abstract

Problem Formative feedback, which is given in an ongoing fashion during the learning process, is fundamental to clinical education. However, dissatisfaction with formative feedback among residents is common. Difficulties with formative feedback are intensified in the operating room (OR) setting due to fast pace, space limitations, and frequent rotation of residents and attendings. Approach In the anesthesiology and critical care department at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, the authors launched a Feedback Moment initiative from January 2018-May 2018 in which 24 first-year residents and attendings were given a short series of prompts designed to facilitate regular, high-quality formative feedback. The authors conducted semistructured interviews with residents before and after the initiative to evaluate its impact. Outcomes In baseline interviews, 18 participating residents stressed the importance of formative feedback but described feeling unsure of their performance due to lack of ongoing constructive input from attendings. They felt hesitant to approach attendings for feedback due to a desire not to interrupt OR workflow or appear incompetent. In follow-up interviews, residents described the initiative as helping to normalize constructive formative feedback but difficult to execute regularly due to OR workflow issues and frequent rotation of attendings with varying approaches. Next steps Challenges faced by participants in this initiative highlight several considerations for effective OR-based formative feedback. Alternative timings for initiating feedback must be considered in light of the hectic nature of the OR workflow. Residents should be equipped with the skills necessary to adapt to varying practice patterns and frequent rotation between attendings, while attendings should be trained to provide a clear rationale for constructive feedback that allows residents to quickly adapt to practice variation. Finally, establishing clear goals among resident-attending pairs is critical to ensuring that formative feedback given in necessarily brief sessions is focused and productive.

Abstract

According to the postulates in biology and medicine, an irreversible violation of any of the elements of a functional system inevitably leads to senescence and destruction of its entire integrity. At the same time, the phenotypic manifestation of the final stages of degradation is similar and due to the peculiarities of the structural and functional organization of living species. Based on this, the established list of symptoms describing age-related changes in the human body is currently applied in medical practice, which allows determining both the physiological status of patients and the development of necessary therapeutic measures. At the same time, the use of any universal approach to diagnose the occurrence and genesis of the processes of senescence is ineffective, which is associated with a wide range of factors and mechanisms causing this type of pathogenetic disorders. For this reason, for many decades, one of the main tasks of gerontology has been a comprehensive analysis of the process of senescence. The result of such large-scale studies was the emergence of a significant number of theories explaining the causes and mechanisms of aging. This review considers a number of theories of aging that have received extensive experimental confirmation and recognition in world practice: free-radical, telomeric, apoptotic, and genetic.

Abstract

An integrated modelling methodology for the calculation of realistic plasma neutron sources for the JET tokamak has been developed. The computational chain comprises TRANSP plasma transport and DRESS neutron spectrum calculations, and their coupling to the MCNP neutron transport code, bridging plasma physics and neutronics. In the paper we apply the developed methodology to the analysis of neutron emission properties of deuterium and helium plasmas at JET, and validate individual modelling steps against neutron diagnostic measurements. Two types of JET discharges are modelled-baseline-like and three-ion radio-frequency scenarios-due to their diversity in plasma heating, characteristics of the induced fast ion population, and the imprint of these on neutron emission properties. The neutron emission modelling results are quantitatively compared to the total neutron yield from fission chambers, neutron emissivity profiles from the neutron camera, neutron spectra from the time-of-flight spectrometer, and neutron activation measurements. The agreement between measured and calculated quantities is found to be satisfactory for all four diagnostic systems within the estimated experimental and computational uncertainties. Additionally, the effect of neutrons not originating from the dominating D(D, n)He-3 reactions is studied through modelling of triton burnup DT neutrons, and, in mixed D-He-3 plasmas, neutrons produced in the Be-9(D, n gamma)B-10 reaction on impurities. It is found that these reactions can contribute up to several percent to the total neutron yield and dominate the neutron activation of samples. The effect of MeV-range fast ions on the neutron activation of In-115 and Al-27 samples is measured and computationally validated.

Abstract

The optimum conditions for access to and sustainment of H-mode plasmas and their expected plasma parameters in the pre-fusion power operation 1 (PFPO-1) phase of the ITER research plan, where the additional plasma heating will be provided by 20 MW of electron cyclotron heating, are assessed in order to identify key open R&D issues. The assessment is performed on the basis of empirical and physics-based scalings derived from present experiments and integrated modelling of these plasmas including a range of first-principle transport models for the core plasma. The predictions of the integrated modelling of ITER H-mode plasmas are compared with ITER-relevant experiments carried out at JET (low-collisionality high-current H modes) and ASDEX Upgrade (significant electron heating) for both global H-mode properties and scale lengths of density and temperature profiles finding reasonable agreement. Specific integration issues of the PFPO-1 H-mode plasma scenarios are discussed taking into account the impact of the specificities of the ITER tokamak design (level of ripple, etc).

Abstract

This paper summarizes the physical principles behind the novel three-ion scenarios using radio frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). We discuss how to transform mode conversion electron heating into a new flexible ICRF technique for ion cyclotron heating and fast-ion generation in multi-ion species plasmas. The theoretical section provides practical recipes for selecting the plasma composition to realize three-ion ICRF scenarios, including two equivalent possibilities for the choice of resonant absorbers that have been identified. The theoretical findings have been convincingly confirmed by the proof-of-principle experiments in mixed H?D plasmas on the Alcator C-Mod and JET tokamaks, using thermal 3He and fast D ions from neutral beam injection as resonant absorbers. Since 2018, significant progress has been made on the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks in H?4He and H?D plasmas, guided by the ITER needs. Furthermore, the scenario was also successfully applied in JET D?3He plasmas as a technique to generate fusion-born alpha particles and study effects of fast ions on plasma confinement under ITER-relevant plasma heating conditions. Tuned for the central deposition of ICRF power in a small region in the plasma core of large devices such as JET, three-ion ICRF scenarios are efficient in generating large populations of passing fast ions and modifying the q-profile. Recent experimental and modeling developments have expanded the use of three-ion scenarios from dedicated ICRF studies to a flexible tool with a broad range of different applications in fusion research. Ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) plays an important role in high performance JET-ILW plasma discharges, both for keeping the heavy impurities away from the plasma centre as for increasing the core ion temperature to boost fusion performance. While the former is needed in all high-performance discharges for steady state operation, the latter will be particularly important in the next-coming JET Deuterium-Tritium campaign (DTE2). Currently, the workhorse for impurity control in high power D plasmas is fundamental H minority ICRH (with simultaneous ω=2ωc harmonic D heating), which leads to localized core electron heating that induces turbulence (flatter density profiles) as well as peaked electron temperatures. For fusion power enhancement, dominant bulk ion heating and RF acceleration of the NBI ions to appropriate energies would be preferable and theoretical predictions suggest that ion heating is also effective for core impurity screening. In this paper, we discuss the basic modeling results of different ICRF scenarios available for the DTE2 campaign in JET-ILW, highlighting their main properties in terms of the RF absorption of the various species, their slowing-down properties and their impact on high-Z impurity transport. Correctly modeling the wave absorption, slowing-down and collisional energy redistribution of the simultaneously RF-heated species in a DT plasma mix with important neutral-beam injection (NBI) is numerically challenging and is outside the scope of this paper. The simplified calculations presented here are rather intended to give the reader an overview of the ICRH options for JET-DTE2 with references to the state-of-the-art ICRH modeling given throughout the paper.

Abstract

The evolution of the JET high performance hybrid scenario, including central accumulation of the tungsten (W) impurity, is reproduced with predictive multi-channel integrated modelling over multiple confinement times using first-principle based core transport models. Eight transport channels (Ti, Te, j, nD, nBe, nNi, nW, ) are modelled predictively, with self-consistent sources, radiation and magnetic equilibrium, yielding a system with multiple non-linearities: This system can reproduce the observed radiative temperature collapse after several confinement times. W is transported inward by neoclassical convection driven by the main ion density gradients and enhanced by poloidal asymmetries due to centrifugal acceleration. The slow evolution of the bulk density profile sets the timescale for W accumulation. Modelling this phenomenon requires a turbulent transport model capable of accurately predicting particle and momentum transport (QuaLiKiz) and a neoclassical transport model including the effects of poloidal asymmetries (NEO) coupled to an integrated plasma simulator (JINTRAC). The modelling capability is applied to optimise the available actuators to prevent W accumulation, and to extrapolate in power and pulse length. Central NBI heating is preferred for high performance, but gives central deposition of particles and torque which increase the risk of W accumulation by increasing density peaking and poloidal asymmetry. The primary mechanism for ICRH to control W in JET is via its impact through turbulence in reducing main ion density peaking (which drives inward neoclassical convection), increased temperature screening and turbulent W diffusion. The anisotropy from ICRH also reduces poloidal asymmetry, but this effect is negligible in high rotation JET discharges. High power ICRH near the axis can sensitively mitigate against W accumulation, and dominant ion heating (e.g. He-3 minority) is predicted to provide more resilience to W accumulation than dominant electron heating (e.g. H minority) in the JET hybrid scenario. Extrapolation to DT plasmas finds 17.5 MW of fusion power and improved confinement compared to DD, due to reduced ion-electron energy exchange, and increased Ti/Te stabilisation of ITG instabilities. The turbulence reduction in DT increases density peaking and accelerates the arrival of W on axis; this may be mitigated by reducing the penetration of the beam particle source with an increased pedestal density.

15. Change of exploitation parameters of a vessel after the switch to the usage of LNG as the main fuel

Abstract

The study presents the analysis of the changes in the fuel autonomy and the effective range performed by the vessels which underwent modernization in order to use LNG as the main fuel. In this article various variants of modernization were considered. It is suggested that the project core geometry of the self-propelled tankers and tugboats should not be altered. The change in the parameters of the fuel autonomy after placing the cryogenic fuel tanks of different constructions was estimated. The various operating modes of cargo tanks of different constructions were observed. Besides that, there are two possible operating modes, particularly the drainage mode and the drain-free mode. It is proved that the tug boats’ fuel autonomy is reduced 2 times. The usage of the boil-off-gas in the self-propelled LNG carrier’s engine compensates for the decrease in the fuel autonomy. Thus, it depends on the distance between the final consumer of LNG and the loading satellite terminal of the cryogenic product whether to opt for using self-propelled or tug and barge transport.

Abstract

openaire: EC/H2020/633053/EU//EUROfusion Dedicated experiments were conducted in mixed H-D plasmas in JET to demonstrate the efficiency of the 3-ion ICRF scenario for plasma heating, relying on injected fast NBI ions as the resonant ion component. Strong core localization of the RF power deposition in the close vicinity of the ion-ion hybrid layer was achieved, resulting in an efficient plasma heating, generation of energetic D ions, strong enhancement of the neutron rate and observation of Alfvénic modes. A consistent physical picture that emerged from a range of fast-ion measurements at JET, including neutron and gamma-ray measurements, a high-energy neutral particle analyzer and MHD mode localization analysis, is presented. The possibility to moderate the fast-ion energies with the ratio P ICRF/P NBI and the choice of the NBI injectors is demonstrated. An outlook of possible applications of the 3-ion scenarios, including a recent example of its use in mixed D-3He plasmas in JET and promising scenarios for D-T plasmas, are presented.

18. The cost of liquid nitrogen for WBC sessions

Abstract

The first unit for the whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) used liquid nitrogen (LN). Liquid nitrogen has a low boiling point (-196 °C) and a high heat sink capacity (HSC). The HSC of LN is 260 kJ/kg at a temperature level of -130°C. Approximately 600 kJ of heat should be removed from the body surface of a patient during a WBC session. The average heat flux from the body surface makes up 3.4 kW. The use of liquid nitrogen makes it possible to remove heat without complicated equipment. Refusal to use LN is caused by the temperature in the WBC zone (-110 °C). This fact reduces the efficiency of WBC procedures. Cryoagent consumption is 5 times less than the demand in some units with LN coolings.

Abstract

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Abstract

This paper presents the analysis of ecological and economical availability for using syngas from gasification of biomass waste or other solid fuels into diesel with ICE-based combined cycle (CC). The new approach is proposed to improve the ecological efficiency of the CC system and decrease the cost of electricity which can be produced with electric generator. For optimization of design of the combined system the new diagrams were obtained to determine characteristics of mixed fuel (diesel + syngas) for the engine at varied syngas fuel parameters after the gasifier with steam agent (plasma or other type). Based on these diagrams it is possible to obtain total reducing CO2 emission in atmosphere of ~1.5 times in the CC system with biomass gasifier.

Abstract

Active control of edge localized modes (ELMs) by using static external magnetic perturbation fields with low toroidal mode number, n, has been demonstrated for both, ITER baseline (q 95 ~ 3) and high beta advanced tokamak scenarios at the JET tokamak. During the application of the low n field the ELM frequency increased by a factor up to ~4-5. Reduction in carbon erosion and ELM peak heat fluxes on the divertor target by roughly the same factor as the increase of the ELM frequency has been observed. The frequency of the mitigated ELMs using a low n field is found to increase proportional to the total input heating power. Compensation of the density pump-out effect observed when the external low n field is applied has been achieved by gas fueling in low triangularity plasmas.

Abstract

An overview is given of the experimental method, the analysis technique and the results for trace tritium experiments conducted on the JET tokamak in 2003. Observations associated with events such as sawtooth collapses, neo-classical tearing modes and edge localized modes are described. Tritium transport is seen to approach neo-classical levels in the plasma core at high density and low q(95), and in the transport barrier region of internal transport barrier (ITB) discharges. Tritium transport remains well above neo-classical levels in all other cases. The correlation of the measured tritium diffusion coefficient and convection velocity for normalized minor radii r/a = [0.65, 0.80] with the controllable parameters q95 and plasma density are found to be consistent for all operational regimes (ELMy H-mode discharges with or without ion cyclotron frequency resonance heating, hybrid scenario and ITB discharges). Scaling with local physics parameters is best described by gyro-Bohm scaling with an additional inverse beta dependence.

Abstract

The potential role of magnetic shear, rational safety factor surfaces and shearing rate on the confinement is investigated on the basis of a database analysis of JET internal transport barriers (ITBs). The ITB is quantified using the JET ITB criterion (Tresset G et al 2002 Nucl. Fusion 42 520). The relation between the shearing rate and the magnetic shear, already established for positive magnetic shear barrier (Tala T J J et al 2001 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 43 507), is investigated at low and negative magnetic shear, where the threshold in shearing rate is found to be lower than for positive magnetic shear barriers. Defining the ITB from the departure from profile stiffness is found to be consistent with the database results, and the critical gradient length is found to be minimum at low magnetic shear. Finally, ITBs are found to be localized in the vicinity of integer safety factor surfaces in positive magnetic shear plasmas, whereas no correlation is found with integer values when the barrier is localized in negative magnetic shear regions.

A large variety of JET discharges with internal transport barriers (ITBs) has been analysed in order to determine the main features which characterize turbulence stabilization at the barrier. It is found that the location of barriers is well correlated with regions where the E×B flow shearing rate exceeds the linear growth rate of the ion temperature gradient mode instability (γηi). A key point is the dependence of γηi on the magnetic shear: in the discharges of this database the reduction of γηi associated to very low or null magnetic shear favours the formation of an ITB. After the ITB formation a positive feedback occurs in which the E×B flow shear mechanism has the leading role and the position of the barrier may be no longer linked to the low shear region.

Abstract

By applying lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) for strong electron heating and off-axis current drive starting very early in the discharge, an electron internal transport barrier (eITB) can be generated. The barrier is formed just inside the location of minimum q, and slowly moves inward with this location. During the current flat-top the barrier can be sustained during many seconds, either with continued LHCD, or by ion cyclotron resonance heating. In this paper both scenarios are analysed and compared.

Abstract

We present the results of recent experiments related to real-time control of internal transport barriers (ITBs) in JET. Using a simple criterion to characterize the ITB existence, location and strength, we have successfully controlled for the first time the radial electron temperature profile within the ITB. The dimensionless variable used in the real-time algorithm - ratio of the ion gyro-radius to the local gradient scale length of the electron temperature - is a measure of the normalized electron temperature gradient and characterizes satisfactorily the main ITB features with a relatively low computational cost. We show several examples of control of this variable in various experimental conditions of toroidal field and plasma current, using different heating systems as control actuators. We also present a double-loop feedback scheme where both the global neutron rate from D-D reactions and the ITB strength are controlled simultaneously. In this case the ITB is sustained in a fully non-inductive current drive regime during several seconds. With the proposed control method, disruptions are avoided by holding the plasma performance at a prescribed target and this opens the route towards stationary operation of tokamak plasmas with ITBs. Initial results suggest that the additional control of the current profile is an important issue for achieving steady-state operation, in particular in the triggering and the sustainment of the ITB.

Abstract

In optimized shear plasmas in the Joint European Torus [P. H. Rebut and B. E. Keen, Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)], safety factor (q) profiles with negative magnetic shear are produced by applying lower hybrid (LH) waves during the plasma current ramp-up phase. These plasmas produce a barrier to the electron energy transport. The radius at which the barrier is located increases with the LH wave power. When heated with high power from ion cyclotron resonance heating and neutral beam injection, they can additionally produce transient internal transport barriers (ITBs) seen on the ion temperature, electron density, and toroidal rotation velocity profiles. Due to recent improvements in coupling, q profile control with LH current drive in ITB plasmas with strong combined heating can be explored. These new experiments have led to ITBs sustained for several seconds by the LH wave. Simulations show that the current driven by the LH waves peaks at the ITB location, indicating that it can act in the region of low magnetic shear.

Abstract

For the first time, data from eight different tokamaks have been combined in an international database for internal transport barriers (ITBs). An analysis of the data for the formation of an ITB with dominant ion heating shows a clear dependence of the threshold power on the minor radius and line-averaged electron density for the formation of ion ITBs. The dependence of ITB formation on the toroidal magnetic field is weak. For the formation of ITBs with dominant electron heating, the database is smaller, but for the threshold power a strong increase with plasma size and a weak toroidal field dependence could also be identified. Based on these results, an expression for the power required to form an ITB is given using global variables only. These results give a basis for the analysis of the database using local values (like magnetic shear) and a detailed comparison with theory-based models.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to construct a microwave tomographic system capable of conducting experiments with whole scale biological objects and to demonstrate the feasibility of microwave tomography for imaging such objects using a canine model. Experiments were conducted using a three-dimensional (3-D) microwave tomographic system with working chamber dimensions of 120 cm in diameter and 135 cm in height. The operating frequency was 0.9 GHz. The object under study was located in the central area of the tomographic chamber filled with a salt solution. Experimentally measured attenuation of the electromagnetic field through the thorax was about -120 dB. To obtain images, we used various two-dimensional and 3-D reconstruction schemes. Images of the canine were obtained. In spite of imperfections, the images represent a significant milestone in the development of microwave tomography for whole body imaging and demonstrate its feasibility.

Abstract

Transport analysis of high performance JET plasmas with optimized magnetic shear (OMS) has revealed many interesting features which cannot be explained by the existing JET empirical transport model (Erba, M., et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 39 (1997) 261). TRANSP analysis shows that transport coefficients in OMS plasmas are often reduced in the plasma core (Cottrell, G.A., et al., in Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics (Proc. 24th Eur. Conf. Berchtesgaden, 1997), Vol. 21A, Part I, European Physical Society, Geneva (1997) 81) to the level of ion neoclassical transport. TRANSP analysis and predictive modelling with JETTO show that this region of improved confinement appears near the plasma centre and then expands outwards in a way which does not follow either the evolution of the region with the negative magnetic shear or the propagation of the region with a large shear in plasma rotation. The best agreement with experiment has been achieved by using a transport model which combines the effect of a long wavelength decoupling due to small magnetic shear with its suppression by strong rotational shear. Predictive modelling of some of the characteristic JET OMS plasmas gives quite good agreement between such a model and the experimental data.

Abstract

Formation of core regions in Tore Supra and JET tokamaks with reduced transport coefficients is reported. Characteristics of the enhanced confinement regions and the physics process involved in their formation and maintenance should be considered separately when the electron or ion components are predominantly heated. In Tore Supra and JET, central electron temperature transitions are observed by injecting lower hybrid waves at modest power levels during the current ramp-up phase of the discharges. Transport analyses stress the importance of the low magnetic shear in the core to explain the anomalous electron transport reduction. With high-power dominant ion heating schemes in JET (neutral beam injection and ion cyclotron resonance heating), internal transport barriers have been obtained in plasmas fuelled with a mixture of deuterium-tritium (D-T) ions leading to a successful production of fusion power (8.2 MW) in this regime. Similar additional power levels to those applied in pure deuterium (D-D) plasmas are required to establish internal transport barriers in D-T plasmas. In D-D and D-T plasmas, ion thermal diffusivities are reduced close to their neoclassical levels in the plasma core and electron thermal diffusivities decrease by one order of magnitude at midplasma radius. The combined role of magnetic shear and velocity shear can explain the formation and evolution of plasma core regions with low energy transport coefficients.

Abstract

Plasmas with the highest deuterium fusion neutron rates yet achieved in JET have been produced by combining a hollow or flat central current profile with a high-confinement (H-mode) edge. In these discharges, lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) preheating, applied early in the current ramp-up phase, `freezes in' a hollow or flat current density profile. When the combined neutral beam injection (NBI) and ICRH heating power is increased, a region of reduced transport and highly peaked profiles forms during the L-mode phase and persists into the later H-mode phase when the fusion reactivity reaches a maximum. Transport analysis shows the formation of a central region of good confinement (the internal transport barrier or ITB) which expands with radial velocity . The clearest signatures of this region are large gradients in the ion temperature and toroidal rotation profiles. Ion thermal diffusivities in the central region are of the order of the neoclassical value. The position and rate of expansion of the ITB radius correlates well with the calculated rational q = 2 surface. The confinement improvement can also be seen in electron density, and, to a lesser extent, in electron temperature. The ITB can persist in combination with the edge transport barrier characteristics of the H-mode.

Abstract

Heating during the early part of the current rise phase gives a low or negative magnetic shear (= (dq/dr)) in the centre of JET plasmas. Under these conditions the confinement improves with high additional heating power heating during the current ramp-up phase of the discharge. The reduction in the transport manifests itself as a peaking of the profiles with a large gradient region near = 0.55. The best discharges have no transport barrier at the edge of the plasma (L-mode). This allows central power deposition by the neutral beams in JET. A control of the plasma pressure, using feedback of the additional heating power in real-time, minimizes the impact of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities. As a result, these discharges achieve the highest D-D neutron rates in JET; , with , and .

Experiments using high-power heating during the current ramp-up phase of the discharge have obtained the highest D-D neutron rates in JET; neutrons , with , keV and keV. The best discharges ( MA and tesla) have peaked pressure profiles with a transport barrier located at = 0.55. The pressure peaking is limited by MHD modes and requires active input power control to achieve the best performance. Deuterium neutral beam injection into a tritium-rich target plasma has established internal transport barriers at power levels close to the lowest threshold for pure deuterium plasmas.

Abstract

All major JET systems have been fully commissioned for D-T and the DTE1 series of experiments has started with the D-T fuel mixture and operating conditions foreseen for ITER. In the area of ITER physics, significant results have been produced in both D-D and D-T. In D-D, the LH threshold power database has been extended, the bounds on edge-electron temperature and density in ELMy H-modes have been defined and the advantages of Types I and III ELMy discharges have been compared. In D-T plasmas, the isotope effect on H-mode threshold power and transport has been determined so that a more accurate assessment can be made of the ignition margin and heating requirements for ITER. Trace tritium experiments have provided first particle transport measurements and an assessment of the ITER reference ion-cyclotron resonance-frequency heating scenarios has been started, In the area of fusion performance, record D-D neutron yields have been obtained by controlling the plasma and current profiles in hot ion ELM-free H-modes and optimized shear modes. In D-T, internal transport barriers have been readily established in optimized shear discharges and Alfven eigenmodes have been observed.

Abstract

The fraction of the coupled lower hybrid (LH) power absorbed in divertor plasmas in JET has been determined experimentally with a method utilizing the time derivative of the total stored energy (plasma and magnetic). This method can account for the power absorbed inside a normalized flux coordinate . The experimental LH absorption coefficient reaches 100% at low plasma densities, , and decreases to 25% at . The LH wave accessibility to the plasma core has been found to play an important role in determining the power absorption and the radial deposition profile. The decreasing absorption is correlated with a gradual shift of the LH power deposition profile, as determined by the hard x-ray profiles, towards the plasma periphery. Similar behaviour is found in ray-tracing + Fokker - Planck code calculations. The frequency spectrum of the LH pump wave, as determined by a probe outside the tokamak vessel, broadens strongly as the wave accessibility is reduced and the absorption drops.

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the phenomena that link particle recycling from the vessel walls in the L-mode during discharge start-up and the core confinement in the H-mode during the subsequent main heating phase. We consider available data of JET experiments that aimed at approaching fully non-inductive ITER-relevant steady-state conditions and show that the high electron temperature produced at the edge by a low recycling during start-up tends to favour the build-up of high normalized β(βN) regimes in the H-mode, the confinement being improved in a large plasma volume. To provide an insight into this complex phenomenon we have modelled the relation between particle recycling in the scrape-off layer and the evolution of plasma transport, plasma current density and shear as well as the stability properties for such experimental conditions. The results confirm the existence of a link between the confinement in the H-mode phase and the values at the edge of electron temperature, bootstrap current density and local magnetic shear during start-up. Such a link could favour these regimes to be self-sustained in time. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

Microwave tomographic imaging is one of the new technologies which has the potential for important applications in medicine. Microwave tomographically reconstructed images may potentially provide information about the physiological state of tissue as well as the anatomical structure of an organ. A two-dimensional (2-D) prototype of a quasi real-time microwave tomographic system was constructed. It was utilized to reconstruct images of physiologically active biological tissues such as an explanted canine perfused heart. The tomographic system consisted of 64 special antennae, divided into 32 emitters and 32 receivers which were electronically scanned. The cylindrical microwave chamber had an internal diameter of 360 mm and was filled with various solutions, including deionized water. The system operated on a frequency of 2.45 GHz. The polarization of the incident electromagnetic field was linear in the vertical direction. Total acquisition time was less than 500 ms. Both accurate and approximation methods of image reconstruction were used. Images of 2-D phantoms, canine hearts, and beating canine hearts have been achieved. In the worst-case situation when the 2-D diffraction model was used for an attempt to "slice" three-dimensional (3-D) object reconstruction, the authors still achieved spatial resolution of 1 to 2 cm and contrast resolution of 5%.

Abstract

The JET neutral beam injection system has proved to be both effective and reliable as a plasma heating device. The ion heating and plasma fuelling characteristics of the system are ideally suited to the production of high fusion performance plasmas while the flexibility in the choice of beam species (H, D, T, 3 He or 4 He) and the ability to inject into almost any JET plasma configuration allows a wide variety of related physics experiments to be carried out. The capability to inject (for the first time) tritium beams was essential to the successful execution of the first tritium experiments in which 1.7 MW of power from DT fusion reactions was generated.

Abstract

An account is given of the high performance plasmas established by development of the H-mode regime in JET in the experimental campaigns up to 1992. High performance in this case is measured in terms of the confinement enhancement achieved over the L-mode scaling as measured using the plasma diamagnetism. Three JET H-mode regimes have achieved enhancement factors (H G DIA ) over Goldston L-mode scaling of 2.5 < H G DIA < 4.0. These are the Pellet Enhanced Performance (PEP) H-MODE, the high bootstrap fraction (high β POL ) H-mode and the Hot Ion (HI) H-mode. The phenomenology of these three regimes is reviewed and contrasts and common threads are elucidated

Abstract

Different diagnostic information has been employed in JET to identify the level of interaction between lower hybrid waves and fast ions accelerated up to few MeV by ion cyclotron waves. It is found that up to 25% of the lower hybrid power can be absorbed by fast ions under specific plasma conditions. Fourier analysis of neutron emission rates and fast ion energy signals during lower hybrid modulation experiments show that the level of interaction depends on the relative position of the cyclotron resonance and the lower hybrid absorption layers.

Abstract

The aim of the Tore Supra tokamak is to address physics and technology issues of long pulse discharges. For this purpose, Tore Supra is equipped with two actively cooled Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) antennas (f = 3.7GHz), designed to operate in 1000s long pulses. One of these is the recently installed passive active multijunction (PAM) antenna, whose design is chosen for an LHCD system for ITER. The first experiments with the PAM antenna in Tore Supra have shown extremely encouraging results in terms of reflection coefficient behaviour and power handling. The maximum power and energy reached on the PAM, after ~500 pulses on plasma, was 2.7MW during 78s (exceeding 200MJ injected energy). In addition, 2.7MW has been coupled at a plasma‐antenna distance of 10cm. The coupling behaviour on the PAM, characterised by the fraction of reflected power (RC), shows good agreement with the predictions from the ALOHA coupling code. Abstract

LH power modulation was recently used at JET to quantify experimentally the LH current drive efficiency and power deposition. A new approach was applied for the analysis of the amplitude and phase of electron temperature Te perturbations δTe(kωo) at different harmonics k of the modulation frequency ωo. A solution of the Fokker‐Planck equation combined with heat transport modelling was used to study the dependence of the ratio of the perturbation of different harmonics k and n, δTe(kωo)/δTe(nωo), and the phase shift of the harmonics δφ(kωo) on the plasma parameters and electron distribution function plateau width, which is directly connected to the current drive efficiency. The results of the modelling were compared with the experimental data to estimate the current drive efficiency. In addition, LH power deposition profiles were deduced from the radial dependence of δφ(ωo). Abstract

During high power commissioning of the JET LH launcher, the radiation and impurity release has been analyzed from various diagnostics: VUV and visible spectroscopy, bolometry. These two last diagnostics have lines‐of‐sight viewing the launcher and can provide information about the electron and/or impurity source localisation. Using a database of 800 plasmas, it is concluded that the iron contamination (FeXV and FeXXIII) is very low for 94% of the pulses and increases linearly with LH power. During arcs, a strong and fast increase of the radiation along the line‐of‐sight viewing the launcher is observed. This diagnostic could provide a tool for arc detection complementary to the RF measurements aiming at reducing the metal contamination in the plasma.
