Although antibiotics are the main therapy for bacterial infections, the reports showed that the overuse (or misuse) of antibiotics will results in several problems such as the development of antibiotic-resistant strains, persistence of drug residues, and numerous environmental concerns. Therefore, finding antibiotic alternatives is considered of vital importance. Investigation of the antimicrobial properties of several plant substances and extracts is of great value to replace antibiotics. With this objective, this study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of an ethanolic extract prepared from olive mill wastewater (OMWW), which is a by-product of olive oil production with considerable environmental burden, against 38 bacterial strains, including fish-associated pathogens, non-pathogenic isolates, collection strains, and one yeast strain, Candida albicans. Disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) tests were used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the OMWWE. According to the results, OMWWE provoked strong inhibitory effects against Shewanella baltica strain SY-S145. It also showed a moderate inhibitory effect on Plesiomonas shigelloides strain SY-PS16 and Vibrio anguillarum strain SY-L24. The MIC and MBC of OMWWE on Shewanella baltica SY-S145, Vibrio gigantis strain C24, and V. anguillarum strain SY-L24 were 500 µg/mL. The MIC and MBC on V. parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 were 1000 µg/mL, whereas the values for Aeromonas salmonicida ATCC 33658 were 500 µg/mL and 1000 µg/mL, respectively. To put it briefly, the OMWW extract showed high antimicrobial activity and can act as an environmentally friendly additive for the control and prevention of diseases caused by A. veronii, A. hydrophila, P. shigelloides, S. baltica, V. anguillarum, and V. parahaemolyticus. Its active agents also prevented infections of both fish-associated pathogens and food spoiling bacteria, which means it can not only help in the disease control mechanism but also in improving the safety of food by reduction of the microbial contamination. Background: The bed bath is an important part of nursing care. There are few studies evaluating the effects of traditional and dry bed baths on patients. Aim: This study was performed with the aim of investigating the effect of traditional and dry bed baths given to intensive care unit patients on the patients' hemodynamic parameters, the duration of the bathing procedure and the cost of consumable items. Methods: This was a randomized crossover clinical trial and a prospective study. The study was conducted in a General Surgery Intensive Care Unit with 22 intensive care patients aged 18 and over, who had a nursing diagnosis of bathing personal care deficiency. Each patient was given two types of bed baths at an interval of 24 h: a traditional bed bath and a dry bed bath performed with single‐use tissues. Immediately before each bath, in the 5th, 10th and 15th minute of bathing, immediately after bathing and 30 min after bathing, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and peripheral oxygen saturation measurement changes over time were compared within the group using the Friedman test. The Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to compare the variables of bathing duration and bathing consumable item costs between the bathing procedures. Results: It was found that at the completion of traditional and dry bed bathing, the participants' body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate parameters were statistically significantly lower than before bathing, whereas peripheral oxygen saturation values showed a significant increase (p < 0.05). It was found that the dry bed bath took a statistically significantly shorter time than the traditional bed bath and that the cost of consumable bathing materials was less (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that traditional and dry bed baths given to intensive care patients affected their hemodynamic parameters and that the dry bed bath was superior to the traditional bed bath in that it took less time and that it cost less. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Traditional and dry bed baths are personal care procedures that are frequently carried out by nurses with patients in intensive care units.Bed baths may affect the hemodynamic parameters of patients in intensive care units, but few studies have evaluated their effects.Determination of the hemodynamic parameters of patients during bed baths, the duration of bathing and the cost of consumable bathing materials may help nurses to achieve patients' body hygiene in a more reliable way and to decide on and adopt measures to minimize risks. What this paper adds? This paper contributes to the performance of personal hygiene. It is necessary to closely monitor the hemodynamic parameters of intensive care patients when they are being given bed baths.This study has direct effects in awakening nurses to the potential risk of bed baths causing a change in hemodynamic parameters in intensive care patients and in taking measures to reduce these risks to a minimum. Also, giving dry bed baths, which are superior in taking less time and having lower costs, provides advantages to nurses in terms of work load, physical difficulties and finance. The implications of this paper: This study emphasizes the positive impacts of dry bed baths carried out by nurses for patients in intensive care units.The dry bed bath can be accepted as enhancing patient safety by being easy to perform and by shortening the time when the patient is exposed to environmental risks. Background: Understanding nursing students' attitudes toward patient data protection is crucial, as it can affect their future practice and adherence to legal and ethical standards. The primary aim of this study was to assess nursing students' attitudes toward the recording and protection of patients' health data. Methods: In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, 460 students were selected using the convenience sampling method. The intention was to contact the whole research population; however, data were collected from those who agreed to participate in the study and who completed the data collection form, which accounted for 70% of the population. For data collection, a five-question student description form and the personal health data recording and protection attitude form for nursing students, consisting of 31 questions checked for language validity, were used. The independent samples t-test and one-way variance analysis were used in independent groups. Results: The students' mean score on the personal health data recording and protection attitude form for nursing students total was 3.96 ± 0.56. The attitudes to the recording and protection of patients' health data of female students, in their second-year of study, who had knowledge concerning personal data and health data, who desired to work in fields of practice related to their studies, and whose levels of communication with patients in their fields of practice were significantly better than those of other students (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.000, p = 0.000, p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Nursing students demonstrated positive attitudes to the recording and protection of patients' data, and certain independent variables affect this. The results of the study may provide nursing educators with an opportunity to carry out interventions relating to factors that affect the attitudes of nursing students to the recording and protection of patients' health data. This study aimed to assess the presence of Staphylococcus species in stuffed mussel samples sold in Çanakkale province and to determine the antibiotic resistance of the isolates. A total of 246 stuffed mussel samples were examined, and two different Staphylococcus (S. warneri and S. pasteuri) were isolated from 12.19% of the samples. Among the Staphylococcus isolates, S. warneri was detected at a rate of 73.33% and S. pasteuri at 26.67%. Bacterial isolates (N=30) were examined for their resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (30 μg), ampicillin (10 μg), erythromycin (15 μg), clindamycin (10 μg), vancomycin (30 μg), oxacillin (5 μg), tetracycline (30 μg), doxycycline hydrochloride (30 μg), chloramphenicol (30 μg), streptomycin (10 μg), gentamicin (10 μg), kanamycin (30 μg), nalidixic acid (30 μg), ciprofloxacin (5 μg), meropenem (10 μg), imipenem (10 μg), sulfamethox/trimethoprim (25 μg), cefotaxime (30 μg), cephalothin (30 μg), ceftriaxone (30 μg), and levofloxacin (5 μg) antibiotics. Resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and erythromycin was found in all S. warneri isolates. In addition, all S. pasteuri isolates were found to be resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. In S. warneri isolates, at least three resistance genes (BlaTEM, tetB-6, tetK-8) and up to eight resistance genes (BlaTEM, tetB-6, tetK-8, strA-strB, aphAI-IAB, ermC) were identified. All S. pasteuri isolates exhibited blaTEM, strA-strB, and aphAI-IAB resistance genes. In conclusion, it was determined that antibiotic-resistant S. warneri and/or S. pasteuri contaminates stuffed mussel samples. This study will serve as a valuable resource for enhancing monitoring strategies in stuffed mussel production. Further studies should be conducted to determine whether the products are suitable for food safety. Aims: The aim of this study was to research the effect of different bed head angles on the hemodynamic parameters of intensive care patients lying in the supine position. Methods: This study was a non‐randomized and non‐controlled, quasi‐experimental repeated measures study. The study was conducted with 50 intensive care patients aged 18 and over in a general surgery intensive care unit in Turkey. With each patient in the supine position, the bed head was raised to an angle of 0°, 20°, 30°, and 45° without a pillow, and the hemodynamic parameters of central venous pressure, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation were recorded after 0 and 10 min. Results: It was found that the mean central venous pressure value measured at min 0 and 10 was higher when the intensive care patients' bed head angle was raised to 45° than when the bed head was at an angle of 0° or 20° (p <.05). It was found that the patients' other hemodynamic parameters were not affected by different bed head angles. Conclusions: It was concluded as a result of this research that in intensive care patients in the supine position, only central venous pressure was affected by bed head angle, and that central venous pressure measurement can be reliably made at a bed head angle of 30°. Purpose: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease has a progressive nature that limits daily living activities. It is important that the patient's spiritual needs are not overlooked and are appropriately integrated into the daily clinical routine. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the spiritual well-being among people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Material and Methods: In the cross-sectional analysis, participants were recruited from two pulmonary clinics between April 2018 and December 2018. The study's power was 83% with 144 participants. Comparative and relational analyses of spiritual well-being were calculated based on demographic-clinical characteristics, sleep quality, quality of life, and anxiety. Data collection tools were the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, St. George Respiratory Questionnaire, and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Further analysis was performed with multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Those who did not take the recommended dosag of medication and did not use devices at home were associated with higher spiritual well-being. Sleep quality, quality of life, and trait anxiety had an explanatory value of 24% for spiritual well-being. The best predictive variable was found to be trait anxiety. Conclusion: Identifying factors associated with spiritual well-being can help define health requirements for comprehensive health management in clinical practice. In-depth analyses of spiritual well-being, which should be be conducted with more variables, may reveal underlying mechanisms of health outcomes in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Urinary Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma haematobium. The clinical picture is manifested by the accumulation of parasite eggs and the formation of granuloma and fibrous tissue around them. A 20-year-old male patient of Malian nationality applied to the infectious diseases' outpatient clinic of our hospital with a complaint of bleeding in the urine, which he had observed intermittently for the last year. Parasitic infiltration was detected in the lamina propria in the biopsy material and was reported as compatible with schistosomiasis. During differential diagnosis, individuals exhibiting hematuria during or after travel to endemic regions should be investigated for urinary schistosomiasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nurses take on important roles in disasters. In this regard, the disaster response self-efficacy of nursing students must be evaluated. The study aimed to determine the self-efficacy of nursing students in disaster response. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, the study sample consisted of 207 nursing students who were in their third or fourth year attending the nursing department of a state university in the Marmara region of Türkiye between October and December 2023. Data were collected using a student description form and the disaster response self-efficacy scale. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 22.05 ± 2.23 years, 73.4% were female, 50.2% were in their third year of study, 90.3% felt a need for education on disaster nursing, and 76.8% stated that they did not have sufficient knowledge and skills relating to disasters. The students’ mean total score on the disaster response self-efficacy scale was 3.23 ± 0.68. In addition, the disaster response self-efficacy levels of students who stated they had sufficient knowledge and skills concerning disaster response were significantly higher than those of other students (p < 0.05). Objective: This study aimed to determine the epidemiology of Acinetobacter species in the last 5 years, the clinical diseases caused by the pathogen, the possible risk factors for infection, and the resistance pattern of the microorganism in our quaternary-care hospital. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 67 pediatric cases infected with Acinetobacter species in our hospital between January 2017 and December 2021 were analyzed. Demographic characteristics and clinical and laboratory findings were analyzed. Results: In pediatric patients infected with Acinetobacter spp., the median age was 36 (7-114) months, and 64.2% (n = 43) were female. Acinetobacter baumannii was grown in the cultures of 31 (46.3%) cases. When the type of infection was examined, 31 (46.3%) cases were urinary tract infections, and 29 (43.3%) cases were bloodstream infections. Extensively drug-resistant, pandrug-resistant, and multidrug-resistant A. baumannii were found in 10 (14.9%), 3 (4.5%), and 2 (3%) cases, respectively. Health-care-associated infections were found to have a significant rate of Acinetobacter resistance (P = .002). Significant antimicrobial resistance was detected in Acinetobacter-infected cases with intensive care hospitalization within the last month and carbapenem use in the previous 3 months (P < .001, both). Conclusion: It is necessary to act in accordance with the infection prevention and control program to reduce the incidence of health-care-associated infections with Acinetobacter species and to prevent infection with highly resistant strains. Due to health-care-associated infections and factors contributing to the increase in Acinetobacter resistance, we believe this study will help clinicians to be more cautious in the use of carbapenems. Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a common genetic heart disease and up to 40%-60% of patients have mutations in cardiac sarcomere protein genes. This genetic diagnosis study aimed to detect pathogenic or likely pathogenic sarcomeric and nonsarcomeric gene mutations and to confirm a final molecular diagnosis in patients diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Methods: A total of 392 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were included in this nationwide multicenter study conducted at 23 centers across Türkiye. All samples were analyzed with a 17-gene hypertrophic cardiomyopathy panel using next-generation sequencing technology. The gene panel includes ACTC1, DES, FLNC, GLA, LAMP2, MYBPC3, MYH7, MYL2, MYL3, PLN, PRKAG2, PTPN11, TNNC1, TNNI3, TNNT2, TPM1, and TTR genes. Results: The next-generation sequencing panel identified positive genetic variants (variants of unknown significance, likely pathogenic or pathogenic) in 12 genes for 121 of 392 samples, including sarcomeric gene mutations in 30.4% (119/392) of samples tested, galactosidase alpha variants in 0.5% (2/392) of samples and TTR variant in 0.025% (1/392). The likely pathogenic or pathogenic variants identified in 69 (57.0%) of 121 positive samples yielded a confirmed molecular diagnosis. The diagnostic yield was 17.1% (15.8% for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy variants) for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy phenocopies and 0.5% for Fabry disease. Conclusions: Our study showed that the distribution of genetic mutations, the prevalence of Fabry disease, and TTR amyloidosis in the Turkish population diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were similar to the other populations, but the percentage of sarcomeric gene mutations was slightly lower.
