SLEEP quality , *BODY mass index , *SMOKING , *MENTAL depression , *MIGRAINE , *MORNINGNESS-Eveningness Questionnaire , *SUMATRIPTAN - Abstract
The study investigated associations between chronotypes (Morning [M], Neither [N], Evening [E]), sociodemographic characteristics, body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, years with migraines, sleep quality (PSQI), anxiety (HADS-A), depression (HADS-D), migraine disability (MIDAS), headache frequency, and pain intensity (VAS) in 80 individuals with migraine. Significant age differences emerged (p < 0.001), with M-types being the oldest. BMI also varied, with M-types presenting the highest median BMI (p = 0.005). While migraine duration and headache frequency showed no significant variance, sleep quality did, with E-types reporting the poorest sleep (p = 0.030). Anxiety and depression were significantly worse in E-types (HADS-A: p = 0.002; HADS-D: p = 0.010). Differences in MIDAS levels were notable (p = 0.038); however, differences in MIDAS scores were not significant (p = 0.115). Pain intensity varied, with E-types experiencing the most severe pain (p = 0.009). Post-hoc analysis showed higher MIDAS scores in E-types compared to N-types (χ2 = 6.56, p = 0.038, ε2 = 0.0831). The findings highlight the need for thorough patient evaluations and tailored care, considering the complex interplay of factors affecting migraine severity, particularly among different chronotypes. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between the severity of the disease and depressive complaints, anxiety symptoms, body perceptions, sleep quality and sexual functions in adults with acne vulgaris. In addition, it is aimed to examine the changes in these parameters after routine drug treatments. Methods: 46 volunteers were included in our study. Sociodemographic data form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Body Cathexis Scale (BCS), Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Acne Quality of Life Scale (AQLS) were applied to the participants before routine drug treatments started with AV diagnosis. In addition, the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) was used when volunteers were first diagnosed to determine the severity of acne. In the second stage of our study, volunteers who used three months of routine drug treatment were re-evaluated with the scales applied in the first stage. 20 volunteers completed the second stage of the research. Results: The mean age of the volunteers participating in the study was 23.80±4.5 years. Of the volunteers, 33 (71.7%) were female and 13 (28.3%) were male. The average scores of the volunteers in our study with GAGS were 18.21±6.75. The relationship of the applied scales with the GAGS score was examined by Pearson correlation analysis. Accordingly, there was a positive correlation between the GAGS score and the Acne Quality of Life Scale scores (r=0.655, p<0.001). On the other hand, there was no correlation between GAGS score and HADS-A, HADS-D, PSQI, ASEX and BCS scores (p values were p=0.806, p=0.789, p=0.482, p=0.657, p=0.105, respectively). In the second stage of our study, the change in the scores of GAGS, HADS-D, HADS-A, P SQI, A SEX, BCS and A QLS after 3 months of routine drug treatment of volunteers was examined. According to the results, the change in the scores of the participants in GAGS, HADS-D, BCS and AQLS was statistically significant (p values were p<0.001, p=0.017, p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: According to the data obtained from our study, as the acne severity of individuals increases, their quality of life is more affected. On the other hand, there is no relationship between the severity of acne and depression, anxiety, negative body perceptions, poor sleep quality and symptoms of sexual dysfunction. There was an improvement in depression symptoms, body image and quality of life of individuals diagnosed with acne vulgaris after treatment. In order to evaluate the results obtained from our study, there is a need for multicenter and large-participant studies to be conducted in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between chronotypes and impulsivity, attention-deficit disorder and smartphone, social media, and internet addiction in a sample of university students. Method: The study was conducted at our university from May to July 2021. A total of 255 subjects were recruited in the study among the students from the medical faculty and the faculty of health sciences (departments of nutrition and dietetics, nursing, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation) of our university who received face-to-face education in 2020-2021. Sociodemographic data form, the Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 Short Form, Young's Internet Addiction Scale, Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult Form, and Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version were administered by the study investigators through face-to-face interviews. Results: Among the students, the intermediate type was most common (n = 157) and the evening type was least common (n = 44). The chronotypes differed in terms of the time spent daily on smartphone and internet (P = .001 and P < .001). The evening types showed significantly higher mean scores on the Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 Short Form, Young's Internet Addiction Scale, Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult Form, and Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version when compared with other chronotypes. Female and male students showed comparable scores on all scales. Chronotypes were not different between genders. Conclusions: The results of our study showed a greater frequency of smartphone, internet, and social media addiction among the evening types than in the other chronotypes. Greater impulsivity and attention problems as observed in the evening types may be predisposing these individuals to develop addiction to smartphone, internet, and social media. Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between vitamin D levels and the severity of the disease, depression symptoms, sleep quality and sexual dysfunction symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. Methods: In this study sexually active female patients aged 18 years and over who were diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome according to the American Rheumatology Association 2010 diagnostic criteria and healthy controls in our university Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic were included. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vit D)(normal 30-50 ng/mL) levels were measured in all participants. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) to assess quality of life and functional status in patients with fibromyalgia, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for depression level, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality and impairment, and the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) was used to determine sexual dysfunction. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the fibromyalgia (n=53) and control (n=40) groups in terms of age, marital status, education level, job status, smoking and body mass index (respectively; p=0.875, p= 0.198, p=0.283, p=0.452, p=0.653, p=0.803). The mean serum 25(OH) vit D of the patient group was 17.20±8.0 ng/ml. The mean serum 25(OH) vit D of the control group was 21.99±6.69 ng/ml, which was statistically significantly higher than the patients with fibromyalgia (p=0.003). There was a negative correlation between 25 (OH) vit D values and the mean scores of FIQ, VAS, BDI, PSQI and ASEX in the patient group. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that low vitamin D levels in patients with fibromyalgia may be associated with disease severity, pain, depression symptoms, poor sleep quality and sexual dysfunction symptoms. Larger prospective studies are needed to examine the effects of vitamin D on the severity of symptoms, sleep disturbance, sexuality, and quality of life in fibromyalgia patients. Purpose: The aim of the current study was to determine perceptions of hospital workers toward patients diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD) in relation to their personal and moral attributes and social networks and to investigate the factors affecting their perceptions. Materials and Methods: The study sample included 159 healthcare workers employed at various facilities in our district. A study-specific adaptation of the “Perceptions toward Criminals Scale’’ that focused on substance users was administered to evaluate perceptions of healthcare workers toward individuals with substance use disorder. Results: The mean age of the participants was 35.76±8.17 years and 64.2% were male. 51.6% of the participants were employed at an addiction center. Healthcare workers at the addiction center were twice more likely than other hospital workers to have positive perceptions toward personal and moral attributes of patients with SUD. Similarly, healthcare workers who had participated in an educational event on addiction were 1.4 times more likely to have positive perceptions toward patients with SUD than those who had not. However, all participants showed negative perceptions toward social networks of patients with SUD. Conclusion: Negative perceptions of healthcare workers toward social networks of patients (family, friends and social environment) with substance use disorder can harm the holistic nature of addiction treatment. Therefore, efforts should be made to improve knowledge and awareness among healthcare workers on social networks of substance users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: A limited number of studies are available on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. Studies have mostly focused on general population and healthcare providers at risk. There are no studies in the literature investigating the mental status of COVID-19 patients during the post-treatment period. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the mental status of the adults recovering from COVID-19. Method: Fifty adults with a clinically confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 and a post-discharge period of at least one month were included in the study. Results: Among the study sample, other specified anxiety disorder (diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder were met except for the duration) was diagnosed in 5 (10%) individuals, panic disorder in 3 (6%), other specified somatic symptom and related disorder (brief somatic symptom disorder) in 2 (4%) individuals, and major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other specified insomnia disorder (brief insomnia disorder) in one individual each (%2). There were 6 (12%) participants with subthreshold anxiety and 2 (4%) participants with subthreshold depression. No mental disorder was identified in the remaining 28 (56%) participants. Discussion: Despite important limitations, the current study revealed that anxiety symptoms are quite common in individuals recovering from COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SIDE effects of antipsychotic drugs , *DRUG side effects , *SEIZURES (Medicine) , *EPILEPSY , *ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY - Abstract
Atypical antipsychotics are used more frequently than typical antipsychotics because of their rare extrapyramidal side effects. It is commonly known that both typical and atypical antipsychotics cause electroensephalography (EEG) abnormalities. Quetiapine cause significantly less EEG abnormalities compared to other atypical and typical antipsychotics. However, seizures associated with quetiapine have been reported. Quetiapine, a derivative of dibenzotiazepine, has high affinity to 5-HT2 receptors and low affinity to D1 and D2 receptors. Comparing to other antipsychotics, it has lower antimuscarinic and alpha-1 antagonistic effects. In this case report, we present a 33 years old male patient without a known history of epilepsy. After three days he started to take quetiapine 600 mg/day, the patient applied to our hospital with the complaints of awakening in the middle of night and meaningless behaviour. There was moderate epileptiform activity in his EEG. No other toxic, metabolic or organic abnormalities were identified to explain the seizures. We thought that his seizures were due to quetiapine. After discontinuation of quetiapine, no additional seizures occured. Our aim of presenting this case report is to make attention to the limited number of researches studying EEG abnormalities caused by atypical antipsychotics. In patients with epilepsy, antipsychotics should be used with the lowest possible dosage. The seizure-lowering effects of antipsychotics must always take into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SIDE effects of antipsychotic drugs , *DRUG side effects , *MYOPIA , *EYE diseases , *PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY - Abstract
Acute acquired myopia is a rare condition in psychiatry and ophthalmology practice. Several drugs have been reported, produce blurring, decrease accommodation and cause diplopia. To our knowledge there is no report of ariprazole that caused ophalthalmologic side effects. In this report we will discuss a case of aripirazole induced myopia. 21-year-old woman, with known case of bipolar affective disorder with 2 previous manic episodes in 2004 and 2006. She was under the treatment with reguler mood stabilizer sodium valproat 1000 mg/day. She presented with manic symptoms for 10 days. Aripiprazole 15 mg/day was added. The patient who had no refraction error before, reported blurring of distance vision in the seventh day of treatment. She consulted an ophthalmologist, who confirmed binocular myopia of - 7 diopters in the right eye and - 8 diopters in the left eye. Ten days after discontinuation of aripiprazole, . Her visual acuity was 20/20 without correction. Because of the disappearance of transient myopia following discontinuation of the drug we diagnosed the case as drug-induced myopia due to aripirazole. In cases with drug induced acute myopia the discussions of the mechanisms include accomodation spasm, ciliary body effusion, ciliary spasm and peripheral uveal effusion. Drug induced myopia is one of the most common causes of transient myopia. Aripiprazol is a second generation antipsychotic with a novel pharmacological profile which exhibits a partial agonistic effect on dopamin D2, D3 and serotonin 5HT1a receptors and antagonistic effect on serotonin 5HT2a receptors. This side effect due to aripiprazole, improved to normal without any intervention. The case report indicates that clinicians need to take account of the possibility that myopic shifts may be associated with new drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulbuthiamine is a hydrophobic molecule that can easily pass the blood brain barrier and supply the formation of thiamine and thiamine esters in the brain . Sulbuthiamine has no psychostimulant or antidepressant features. But it can improve the psychobehavioral inhibition during major depression episodes and thereby facilitate the rehabilitation of patients in their social, professional and family life functioning. Sulbuthiamine has no specific therapeutic indication or clinical use, but it seems to be used a great deal by individuals. 58-year-old widowed female admitted to the emergency psychiatry with the complaints of euphoria, elation and decreased need for sleep 5 days after the initiation of sulbuthiamine that was advised by her relative for her fatigue and somatic complaints. During psychiatric assessment she had, grandiosity, psychomotor activation, irritability, instability, racing thoughts, flight of ideas, auditory hallucinations consistent with mood, and she was hospitalized for further evaluation and treatment. She had no psychiatric admission before, but had family history of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Sulbutiamine was stopped and lorazepam 5mg/day was started to the patient whose YMRS (Young Mania Rating Scale) score was 28. On the fourth day of admission the score decreased to 8. Because the mania symptoms started after sulbutiamine use and rapidly decreased when sulbuthiamine stopped, we diagnosed the case as sulbuthiamine induced mania. It is well known that psychotropic agents , especially antidepressants may cause manic symptoms. In literature, there is a case report in which the patient had bipolar disorder with sulbuthiamine abuse. It is discussed whether the patient had a manic episode induced by sulbuthiamine or his addiction to sulbuthiamine interfered with treatment of bipolar disorder. Considering this case, it is argued that clinicians need to be aware of the potential misuse of sulbuthiamine and its potential harmful influence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: The current study primarily aimed to investigate whether the prevalence of restless legs syndrome differs in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder or anxiety disorder without antidepressant use compared to control group. Secondly, the study sought to examine whether there was a difference in restless legs syndrome prevalence among patients on antidepressant treatment compared to control subjects., Methods: Five hundred patients who were diagnosed with anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5)-5 criteria without a history of antidepressant treatment were included in the study (group 1). Group 2 consisted of 500 patients diagnosed with anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder and on antidepressant treatment who were identified as being in complete or partial remission via psychiatric interview based on DSM-5 criteria. Five hundred age- and sex-matched subjects without any mental illness were included in control group (Group 3)., Results: Among all participants, restless legs syndrome was diagnosed in 101 (6.73%) individuals. There were no significant differences in age, gender, smoking status, marital status, and education level between those with or without a diagnosis of restless legs syndrome ( P = .209, P = .519, P = .227, P = .508, P = .676, respectively). Restless legs syndrome was diagnosed in 65/500 (13.0%) group 1 patients, 16/500 (3.2%) group 2 patients, and 20/500 (4.0%) control subjects, with a significant difference among the groups ( P < .001). The prevalence of RLS diagnosis did not significantly differ among patients receiving different antidepressant drugs ( P = .965)., Conclusion: Antidepressant use was not found to be a risk factor for restless legs syndrome. Our study presents important data on the close association of anxiety disorder, especially major depressive disorder with restless legs syndrome., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare., (2022 authors.)
