Abstract

Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Abstract

Unbound states in C17 were investigated via one-neutron removal from a C18 beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of C17, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the C16 fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/21− and 3/21−, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes – in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.

Abstract

The Borromean halo nucleus 6He has been studied by a kinematically complete measurement of Coulomb and nuclear breakup into α + 2n on Pb and C targets at 70 MeV/nucleon. Fully quantum-mechanical four-body breakup calculations reproduce the energy and angular differential cross sections below Erel∼1 MeV for both targets. The model used here reproduces the 6He ground-state properties as well as α-n and n-n scattering data and predicts an average opening angle 〈θnn〉 of 68∘ between the two halo neutrons. However, the model underestimates the breakup cross sections for higher Erel, indicating a possible contribution from the inelastic breakup. Alternatively, we examine the empirically modified calculations that reproduce the energy-differential cross sections for a wide range of scattering angles for both targets. The extracted B(E1) peaks at Erel∼1.4 MeV and amounts to 1.6(2) e2fm2 for Erel ≤ 20 MeV, resulting 〈θnn〉 = 56−10+9 degrees. In either interpretation, the current results show evidence of the dineutron spatial correlation in 6He.

Abstract

The low-lying unbound level structure of the halo nucleus 19C has been investigated using single-neutron knockout from 20C on a carbon target at 280 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass spectrum, derived from the momenta of the forward going beam velocity 18C fragment and neutrons, was found to be dominated by a very narrow near threshold (Erel=0.036(1) MeV) peak. Two less strongly populated resonance-like features were also observed at Erel=0.84(4) and 2.31(3) MeV, both of which exhibit characteristics consistent with neutron p-shell hole states. Comparisons of the energies, measured cross sections and parallel momentum distributions to the results of shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations lead to spin-parity assignments of 5/21+ and 1/21− for the levels at Ex=0.62(9) and 2.89(10) MeV with Sn=0.58(9) MeV. Spectroscopic factors were also deduced and found to be in reasonable accord with shell-model calculations. The valence neutron configuration of the 20C ground state is thus seen to include, in addition to the known 1s1/22 component, a significant 0d5/22 contribution. The level scheme of 19C, including significantly the 1/21− cross-shell state, is well accounted for by the YSOX shell-model interaction developed from the monopole-based universal interaction.

Abstract

The interaction cross sections (σI) of the very neutron-rich carbon isotopes 19C, 20C and 22C have been measured on a carbon target at 307, 280, and 235 MeV/nucleon, respectively. A σI of 1.280±0.023 b was obtained for 22C, significantly larger than for 19,20C, supporting the halo character of 22C. A 22C root-mean-squared matter radius of 3.44±0.08 fm was deduced using a four-body Glauber reaction model. This value is smaller than an earlier estimate (of 5.4±0.9 fm) derived from a σI measurement on a hydrogen target at 40 MeV/nucleon. These new, higher-precision σI data provide stronger constraints for assessing the consistency of theories describing weakly bound nuclei.

Abstract

One-neutron knockout from 24O leading to the first excited state in 23O has been measured for a proton target at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of the neutron unbound state of 23O was reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 22O fragment and emitted neutron. A sharp peak was found at Edecay=50±3 keV, corresponding to an excited state in 23O at 2.78±0.11 MeV, as observed in previous measurements. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this state was consistent with d-wave neutron knockout, providing support for a Jπ assignment of 5/2+. The associated spectroscopic factor was deduced to be C2S(0d5/2)=4.1±0.4 by comparing the measured cross section (σ−1nexp=61±6 mb) with a distorted wave impulse approximation calculation. Such a large occupancy for the neutron 0d5/2 orbital is in line with the N=16 shell closure in 24O.

Abstract

The heaviest bound isotope of boron ^{19}B has been investigated using exclusive measurements of its Coulomb dissociation, into ^{17}B and two neutrons, in collisions with Pb at 220 MeV/nucleon. Enhanced electric dipole (E1) strength is observed just above the two-neutron decay threshold with an integrated E1 strength of B(E1)=1.64±0.06(stat)±0.12(sys) e^{2} fm^{2} for relative energies below 6 MeV. This feature, known as a soft E1 excitation, provides the first firm evidence that ^{19}B has a prominent two-neutron halo. Three-body calculations that reproduce the energy spectrum indicate that the valence neutrons have a significant s-wave configuration and exhibit a dineutronlike correlation.

Abstract

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus 28 F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from 29 Ne / 29 F beams at energies around 230 MeV / nucleon . The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the 27 F ( * ) + n and 26 F ( * ) + 2 n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the 28 F ground state, with S n ( 28 F ) = − 199 ( 6 ) keV , while analysis of the 2 n decay channel allowed a considerably improved S n ( 27 F ) = 1620 ( 60 ) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of 28 F . Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed 27 F + n momentum distribution following neutron removal from 29 F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1 p 3 / 2 neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N = 20 includes 28 F , and most probably 29 F , and suggests that 28 O is not doubly magic.

Comparisons of the energies, measured cross sections and parallel momentum distributions to the results of shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations lead to spin-parity assignments of 5 / 2 1 + and 1 / 2 1 − for the levels at E x = 0.62 ( 9 ) and 2.89 ( 10 ) MeV with S n = 0.58 ( 9 ) MeV. Spectroscopic factors were also deduced and found to be in reasonable accord with shell-model calculations. The valence neutron configuration of the 20C ground state is thus seen to include, in addition to the known 1 s 1 / 2 2 component, a significant 0 d 5 / 2 2 contribution. The level scheme of 19C, including significantly the 1 / 2 1 − cross-shell state, is well accounted for by the YSOX shell-model interaction developed from the monopole-based universal interaction.

Abstract

The most neutron-rich boron isotopes ^{20}B and ^{21}B have been observed for the first time following proton removal from ^{22}N and ^{22}C at energies around 230 MeV/nucleon. Both nuclei were found to exist as resonances which were detected through their decay into ^{19}B and one or two neutrons. Two-proton removal from ^{22}N populated a prominent resonancelike structure in ^{20}B at around 2.5 MeV above the one-neutron decay threshold, which is interpreted as arising from the closely spaced 1^{-},2^{-} ground-state doublet predicted by the shell model. In the case of proton removal from ^{22}C, the ^{19}B plus one- and two-neutron channels were consistent with the population of a resonance in ^{21}B 2.47±0.19 MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold, which is found to exhibit direct two-neutron decay. The ground-state mass excesses determined for ^{20,21}B are found to be in agreement with mass surface extrapolations derived within the latest atomic-mass evaluations.

Abstract

International audience; Theoretical description of cross-shell states, whose parity is opposite to that of the ground state, in light neutron-rich nuclei represents a difficult task, since they involve transitions encompassing two major shells on a proton-neutron asymmetric system. More specifically obtaining reliable effective interactions in the nuclear shell model for such transitions is a challenge. Scarcity of experimental constraints may be additionally responsible to this. An experimental attempt to furnish new spectroscopic information on cross-shell states in neutron-rich carbon isotopes, ^17C and ^19C, is described, and the applicability of modern shell-model interactions in describing relevant spectroscopy is discussed. Brief description of the experiment utilizing RIKEN-RIBF, SAMURAI spectrometer is provided.

International audience; High-lying isolated neutron resonances have been observed in$^{17,19}\mathrm{C}$. Analyses of the decay properties utilizing shell-model calculations suggest that they could be interpreted as possible variants of proton core excited states. The spins of these states are likely to be originating from anti-parallel coupling of spins of the $d_{5/2}$ neutron and the proton $2^+$ state in the assumed respective core nuclei,$^{16,18}\mathrm{C}$.

Abstract

Alanine dosimeters are useful tools for measuring both kilo-gray level doses and radiation therapy level doses. The National Metrology Institute of Japan is planning to develop a dose measurement service for carbon-beam therapy. The purpose of this study was to verify that the alanine dosimeter could be used for carbon-beam dosimetry. We irradiated the alanine dosimeter with 60Co-gamma rays and a carbon beam using a range of 10–30 Gy. For the gamma-ray irradiation, the alanine dosimeter was placed in a 5 g cm−2 water phantom. For the carbon-beam irradiation, the spread out Bragg peak of the 290 meV/u carbon ion was used, and the dosimeter was located at the centre of the peak region. The alanine spectra obtained under the carbon-beam irradiation were almost the same as the spectra under the gamma-ray irradiation. The alanine dosimeter irradiated with the carbon beam show a smaller signal than that obtained under the gamma-ray irradiation for the same dose. The alanine signal increased as the dose increased over the entire dosage range for both the gamma-ray and carbon-beam irradiation. This result suggests that the alanine dosimeter has potential for carbon-beam dosimetry.

Abstract

One-neutron knockout from 24O leading to the first excited state in 23O has been measured for a proton target at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of the neutron unbound state of 23O was reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 22O fragment and emitted neutron. A sharp peak was found at E decay = 50 ± 3 keV , corresponding to an excited state in 23O at 2.78 ± 0.11 MeV , as observed in previous measurements. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this state was consistent with d-wave neutron knockout, providing support for a J π assignment of 5 / 2 + . The associated spectroscopic factor was deduced to be C 2 S ( 0 d 5 / 2 ) = 4.1 ± 0.4 by comparing the measured cross section ( σ − 1 n exp = 61 ± 6 mb ) with a distorted wave impulse approximation calculation. Such a large occupancy for the neutron 0 d 5 / 2 orbital is in line with the N = 16 shell closure in 24O.

Abstract

Introduction The use of transoesophageal ultrasound (TOE) is often cited as a limitation in TAVI under local anaesthesia and sedation. The reason is that moderate or deeper sedation is required when using TOE because of its invasiveness, and if deep sedation is used, its respiratory depression becomes stronger and airway and respiratory management become unstable. High flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy (HFNC) is a device that has recently been attracting attention as one that is expected to have oxygenation and ventilation assistance effects by using a high flow of humidified gas. We inserted TOE and managed by using HFNC in TAVI under local anaesthesia and sedation. After entering the room and securing various monitors and arterial pressure lines, HFNC was started with FiO2 40%, flow 40L. For induction of anaesthesia, fentanyl 0.5-1 mcg / kg and Propofol 20-30 mg were administered. After the disappearance of the eyelash reflex was confirmed, TOE was inserted after local anaesthesia to the pharynx with 8% Lidocaine spray. The state of anaesthesia was maintained at Propofol 2 mg / kg / hr and Remifentanil 0.01-0.03 mcg / kg / min. Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted from April 2017 to March 2018, and arterial blood gas analysis data at induction of anaesthesia (PaO2, PaCO2, BE), intubation event incidence rate and its breakdown were examined. Defects in the description were excluded. Results There were 88 cases in the period. Six cases were intubation cases, but 2 cases were intubated condition from before operation, 3 cases were extracorporeal circulation introduction due to hemodynamic instability, 1 case was due to coronary artery occlusion and There was no intubation and general anaesthesia due to anaesthesia related and patient movement control difficulty. Arterial blood gas analysis data were PaO 2 138.3 mmHg 95%CI[125.9, 150.7], PaCO 2 37.5 mmHg, 95%CI[35.7, 39.3], BE 0.09mEq/l, 95%CI[-0.60, 0.79]. Discussion Hypoxemia or hypercapnia did not occur even under moderate to deep sedation where TOE insertion did not cause movement. HFNC can suppress the occurrence of hypoxemia and hypercapnia even in moderate to deep sedation where TOE insertion is possible.

Abstract

The neutron-rich oxygen isotope O-23 has been investigated via proton inelastic scattering on a liquid hydrogen target at 63.5 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics was employed to reconstruct the energy spectrum. A sharp resonance state was observed at 42(5) keV above the neutron threshold. A comparison of the differential cross section leading to this state with a microscopic DWBA calculation allowed a J (pi) assignment of 5/2(+) for this state.

Abstract

The 16C nucleus has been investigated by the neutron knockout reaction of 17C on a liquid hydrogen target. Applying the invariant mass method in inverse kinematics and γ-ray spectroscopy, the energy spectrum was reconstructed by triple-coincidence measurement, in which neutrons, charged fragments, and γ rays from the decay of the reaction residue (16C*) were detected. A peak at 0.47 MeV was observed in the invariant mass spectrum in coincidence with a peak at 0.74 MeV in the γ-ray spectrum, which indicates the presence of an unbound state with an excitation energy of 5.46 MeV. Comparison of the experimental cross section with the value derived by a theoretical calculation provided evidence that the spin-parity of this state is 2−.

Abstract

International audience; The one-neutron removal cross section from 29Ne, 33,35,37Mg, and 39,41Si on a Pb target have been measured at around 240 MeV/nucleon at the RIBF (RI-Beam Factory) at RIKEN. This main goal of the experiment was to extract the inclusive Coulomb breakup cross sections in order to probe possible halo structures through their enhanced low-energy E1 strengths - so-called soft E1 excitations. The results showed significant enhancement of the one-neutron removal Coulomb breakup cross section for 37Mg. This in turn provides evidence for the existence of halo structure in 37Mg.

Abstract

The interaction cross sections ( σI ) of the very neutron-rich carbon isotopes 19 C, 20 C and 22 C have been measured on a carbon target at 307, 280, and 235 MeV/nucleon, respectively. A σI of 1.280±0.023 b was obtained for 22 C, significantly larger than for 19,20 C, supporting the halo character of 22 C. A 22 C root-mean-squared matter radius of 3.44±0.08 fm was deduced using a four-body Glauber reaction model. This value is smaller than an earlier estimate (of 5.4±0.9 fm ) derived from a σI measurement on a hydrogen target at 40 MeV/nucleon. These new, higher-precision σI data provide stronger constraints for assessing the consistency of theories describing weakly bound nuclei.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Very neutron-rich isotopes, including Ne30−32, in the vicinity of N=20 are known to exhibit ground states dominated by fp-shell intruder configurations: the “island of inversion.” Systematics for the Ne-isotopic chain suggest that such configurations may be in strong competition with normal shell-model configurations in the ground state of Ne29.Purpose: A determination of the structure of Ne29 is thus important to delineate the extent of the island of inversion and better understand structural evolution in neutron-rich Ne isotopes. This is accomplished here through a combined investigation of nuclear and Coulomb-induced one-neutron removal reactions.Method: Cross sections for one-neutron removal on carbon and lead targets and the parallel momentum distribution of the Ne28 residues from the carbon target are measured at around 240 MeV/nucleon. The measurements are compared with reaction calculations combined with spectroscopic information from SDPF-M shell-model wave functions.Results: The deduced width of the inclusive parallel momentum distribution, 98(12) MeV/c (FWHM), suggests that the ground state of Ne29 has a spin parity of 3/2−. Detailed comparisons of the measured inclusive and partial cross sections of the two targets and the parallel momentum distribution of the carbon target with reaction calculations, combined with spectroscopic information from large-scale shell-model calculations, are all consistent with a 3/2− spin-parity assignment.Conclusions: The results indicate that Ne29 lies within the island of inversion and that the ground state of Ne29 is dominated by a Ne28(0+1)⊗2p3/2 neutron configuration. Combined with recently measured interaction cross sections, it is concluded that Ne29 may exhibit a moderately developed halo-like distribution.

Abstract

This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.; International audience; The spectroscopic structure of 19C, a prominent one-neutron halo nucleus, has been studied with a 20C secondary beam at 290 MeV/nucleon and a carbon target. Neutron-unbound states populated by the one-neutron knockout reaction were investigated by means of the invariant mass method. The preliminary relative energy spectrum and parallel momentum distribution of the knockout residue, 19C*, were reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 18C fragment, neutron, and beam. Three resonances were observed in the spectrum, which correspond to the states at Ex = 0.62(9), 1.42(10), and 2.89(10) MeV. The parallel momentum distributions for the 0.62-MeV and 2.89-MeV states suggest spin-parity assignments of 5/2+ and 1/2−, respectively. The 1.42-MeV state is in line with the reported 5/22+ state.

Scintillation properties and radioactive contamination of calcium molybdate scintillating crystals depleted in 48Ca and enriched in 100Mo (40Ca100MoO4 ) have been studied to prepare a 100Mo-based neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. The prospects of a neutrinoless double beta decay experiment using 40Ca100MoO4 crystals are discussed.

Abstract

We report for the first time the discrimination of the core fragment knockout and valence nucleon knockout reaction mechanisms at medium energy range, by the use of the recoil proton tagging technique. Intense 8He beams at 82.3 MeV/u were supplied by the RIPS beam line at RIKEN, and impinged on both hydrogen and carbon targets. Recoil protons were detected in coincidence with the forward moving core fragments and neutrons. The core fragment knockout mechanism is identified through the polar angle correlation and checked by various kinematics relations. This mechanism may be used to extract the cluster structure information of unstable nuclei. On the other hand, with the selection of the tagged valence nucleon knockout mechanism, a narrower peak of 7He ground state is obtained. The extracted neutron spectroscopic factor S n = 0.512 ( 18 ) is relatively smaller than the no-tagged one, and is in good agreement with the prediction of ab initio Greenʼs function Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0gs+→21+) for the proton-rich nucleus 28S was determined experimentally using intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. The resultant B(E2) value 181(31) e2fm4 is smaller than those of neighboring N = 12 isotones and Z = 16 isotopes. The double ratio |Mn/Mp|/(N/Z) of the 0gs+→21+ transition in 28S was obtained to be 1.9(2) by evaluating the Mn value from the known B(E2) value of the mirror nucleus 28Mg, showing the hindrance of proton collectivity relative to that of neutrons. These results indicate the emergence of the magic number Z = 16 in 28S.

Abstract

The unbound excited states of the most neutron-rich oxygen isotope, (24)O (Z = 8, N = 16), have been investigated using the (24)O(p,p')(24)O*-->(23)O+n reaction at RIKEN, where a 63 MeV/neuclon secondary beam of (24)O was produced in a Be production target by the projectile-like fragmentation of a 95 MeV/u (40)Ar primary beam. The first 2(+) excited state was observed in the invariant mass spectrum. This experiment; will give us a deeper understanding of the new magic number at N = 16 in the neutron-rich oxygen isotopes.

Abstract

The neutron-rich carbon isotopes (19,17)C and a boron isotope (14)B are investigated respectively via proton inelastic and charge-exchange reactions on a liquid hydrogen target at around 70 MeV/nucleon at RIKEN. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics involving coincidence detection of a charged fragment and a neutron both emitted at forward angles is employed to map the energy spectrum above the neutron decay threshold. Several resonance structures are revealed in the invariant mass spectra, and the nature for some of them is discussed from comparisons of differential cross section data with predictions of microscopic DWBA calculations based on spsdp f shell model wave functions and a recent parametrization of semi-microscopic nucleon-nucleus optical model potential (JLMB). By extrapolating the (p, n) cross sections leading to the 1(+) state at 1.27 MeV in (14)B to zero momentum transfer the Gamow-Teller transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a beta-delayed neutron emission study.

Abstract

A Gamow–Teller (GT) transition from the drip-line nucleus 14Be to 14B was studied via the ( p , n ) reaction in inverse kinematics using a secondary 14Be beam at 69 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method is employed to reconstruct the energy spectrum. A peak is observed at an excitation energy of 1.27(2) MeV in 14B, together with bumps at 2.08 and 4.06(5) MeV. The observed forward peaking of the state at 1.27 MeV and a good description for the differential cross section, obtained with a DWBA calculation provide support for the 1 + assignment to this state. By extrapolating the cross section to zero momentum transfer the GT-transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a β-delayed neutron emission study.

Abstract

The Coulomb dissociation of the proton-rich nuclei 31 Cl was studied experimentally using 31 Cl beams at 58 MeV/nucleon with a lead target. The relative energy between the reaction products, 30 S and proton, was obtained. The first excited state in 31 Cl was observed which is relevant to the resonant capture of stellar 30 S (p,γ)31 Cl reaction.

Abstract

An experimental study for the unbound nucleus 13Be has been performed by means of the invariant mass method via the one-neutron removal reaction H 1 ( Be 14 , Be 12 + n ) . A resonance has been observed at 0.51(1) MeV in the relative energy ( E rel ) spectrum of the Be 12 + n system. The transverse momentum distribution of the Be 12 + n system as well as the resonance width of 0.45(3) MeV gives evidence for the p-wave nature of the resonance. A d-wave resonance has also been observed at 2.39(5) MeV in the E rel spectrum. The observation of the low-lying p-wave resonance indicates the disappearance of the N = 8 magicity in the vicinity of the neutron drip line region.

Recoiled proton tagged knockout reaction experiments were carried-out for He-8 at 82.5 MeV/u in RIKEN and for He-6 at 65 MeV/u in Lanzhou. The very preliminary results for the distinguish of the reaction mechanism are presented and compared to the kinematics calculation.

Abstract

The data on the vector Ay and tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz analyzing powers for the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] reactions at Ed = 200 and 270 MeV are presented. The data demonstrate large values of analyzing powers and their strong variation versus the scattering angle. The observed negative sign of the tensor analyzing powers for these reactions at small angles clearly demonstrate the sensitivity to the D/S ratio of the 3H and 3He wave functions, respectively. The calculations performed within one-nucleon exchange model with the use of the standard three-nucleon bound state wave functions fail to reproduce the data on the tensor analyzing powers.
