We performed the stress analysis of a SPM motor core with the shrink fitting, and calculated the iron loss by FEM using the B-H curve and iron loss measured under a compressive stress. We examined the effect of shrink fitting on iron loss of an actual motor and the validity of the estimation of the iron loss by FEM analysis using the measured properties affected by the stress. It is shown that the magnetic properties under the compressive stress should be considered for the precise estimation of the iron loss in a motor with the shrink fitting.

The flow behavior of a powder during high-speed tableting with a rotary press has been investigated using a mixed powder of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and spray-dried lactose as a model. Characteristics of the powder such as angle of repose, compressibility, dynamic flowability, expansion displacement and the morphology of particles were measured and are discussed in relation to the die-fill properties in a rotary press. This study revealed that the die-fill properties correlated with the static flowability properties such as the angle of repose and compressibility in the case of gravity feeding in a rotary press, but the dynamic flowability measured by a powder rheometer was the most important factor in the case of force feeding using a die feeder. The flowability of mixed powders containing 20-40% long, narrow MCC particles was statically low but dynamically high, and these powders had excellent die-fill properties. It is suggested that the use of long, narrow MCC particles is suitable for high-speed tableting, because they become entangled with other particles and hold air uniformly in a powder bed when agitated in a die feeder.

Excited states of free base chlorin (FBC), free base Bacteriochlorin (FBBC), pheophytin a (Pheo a), and chlorophyll a (Chlo a), which are derivatives of free base porphine (FBP), were calculated by the SAC (symmetry adapted cluster)/SAC−CI (configuration interaction) method. The results reproduced well the experimentally determined excitation energies. The reduction of the outer double bonds in the porphine ring in the order of FBP, FBC, and FBBC causes a breakdown of the symmetry and a narrowing of the HOMO−LUMO gap, which result in a red shift of the Qx band and an increase of its intensity. In the change from Pheo a to Chlo a, the Mg coordination reduces the quasidegeneracy in the Qx state and then increases the spectral intensity. The disappearance of the Qy humps from the absorption spectrum of Pheo a, compared with that of Chlo a, is due to the red shift of the Qy state.

Teratogenicity of sodium N[2-[4-(2,2-dimethylpropionyloxy) phenylsulfonylamino]benzoyl] aminoacetate tetrahydrate (ONO-5046.Na), a novel inhibitor of human neutrophil elastase, was studied. ONO-5046.Na was injected intravenously at doses of 0, 7.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg/day to pregnant Kbl: NZW rabbits from day 6 to day 18 of pregnancy. All female rabbits were sacrificed on day 29 of pregnancy and their fetuses were examined. There were no clinical signs or death attributable to ONO-5046.Na. One dam in the control group and 3 dams in the 30 mg/kg/day group aborted. Body weight gain in the 15 and 20 mg/kg/day groups and food intake in the 30 mg/kg/day group were decreased during the administration period. These changes had recovered by the end of the study. Kidney weight was increased in the 30 mg/kg/day group. There were no effects of ONO-5046.Na in necropsy findings at cesarean section in dams at any dose levels. Developmental toxicity of ONO-5046.Na was not found at any dose levels. From these results, it is considered that the NOAEL of ONO-5046.Na is 7.5 mg/kg/day for pregnant animals and 30 mg/kg/day for fetuses.

We examined the levels of expression of the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) gene quantified by Northern blot analysis in comparison with those of the MDR1 gene determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 104 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) specimens [59 adenocarcinoma (Ad), 40 squamous cell carcinoma (Sq), four large cell carcinoma (La) and one adeno-squamous carcinoma (AdSq)]. Thirty-three (31.7%) of the 104 NSCLC expressed the MRP gene at various levels. The NSCLC showing high (++) levels of MRP gene expression (19 out of 33, 57.6%) were predominantly squamous cell carcinomas (Ad, 5; Sq, 13; La, 1) (P < 0.05). Six of the eight NSCLCs expressing high levels of MRP mRNA and no MDR1 (MRP ++, MDR1-) were squamous cell carcinomas. Sixty-one of the 104 NSCLC patients received chemotherapy with MRP-related anti-cancer drugs [vindesine (VDS) and etoposide (VP-16)]. Twenty-three patients (37.7%) with tumour expressing high or moderate levels of MRP showed significantly worse prognoses than those with non- or low-MRP-expressing tumours (P < 0.05). These results suggest that the level of MRP gene expression is related to the histopathology and prognosis of NSCLC. Images Figure 1

A novel and simple technique for gain flatness control is reported for gain shifted, long wavelength band (L-band) erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Utilization of the backward traveling amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the C-band is analyzed with respect to controlling the gain tilt observed in the L-band when the total input power of the EDFA is changed. It is shown that a gain flatness of 0.6 dB/30 nm can be achieved over a dynamic range greater than 10 dB by using the backward traveling ASE power in the C-band as a monitor to adjust the copropagating pump power of the EDFA. The proposed technique eliminates the need to extract the output signals from the monitored ASE signal, demonstrating the suitability and simplicity of the proposed technique for wavelength division multiplexed applications.

A novel two-mode bistable laser diode (TMBLD) with an asymmetric cavity configuration is proposed and analyzed. It consists of a gain region, a saturable absorber region, and a set of mode-selective mirrors (or filters). These elements are arranged such that the saturable absorber acts as an intracavity loss for one mode and a bleachable absorber external to the cavity of the other mode. Both modes share the same gain medium and compete for the same gain. Bleaching of the absorber leads to a switching of the modes and possible bistability. This two-mode bistability results from the complementary processes of mode competition in the gain section and the mode-dependent effective cross section of the saturable absorber. A rate equation analysis of the device indicates that a switching time less than 200 ps and a modulation rate over 3 Gb/s should be obtainable. >

Multilayered thin-film capacitors (MLTFC) with SrTiO3 (STO) dielectric and Pt electrode thin layers were fabricated on polycrystalline alumina substrates, in which amorphous STO dielectric thin layers with thicknesses of 100-300 nm were formed using a cost-effective aerosol chemical vapor deposition (ASCVD) method. The MLTFC with up to ten-layer dielectric layers and total thickness of 0.2-0.25 mm, reached capacitance densities of 100-900 nF/cm2. Further increase in capacitance density of the MLTFC was tried by reduction in thickness and crystallization of STO dielectric thin layers. Three forms of MLTFC (chips, sheets and substrates) are being developed for embedded passive applications.

This paper presents a design methodology that was applied to the design of a 2.4GHz dual-core SPARC64trade microprocessor with 90nm CMOS technology. It focuses on the newly adopted techniques, such as efficient data management in dual-core design, fast delay calculation of the noise-immune clock distribution circuit, enhanced signal integrity analysis of a large-scale custom macro design, and enhanced diagnosis capability using a logic BIST circuit.

The intercalation reaction of n-alkylamines from methyl- to hexadecylamine into α-tin(IV) bis(hydrogenphosphate) has been investigated. The reaction was conducted by mixing the phosphate and solutions of the amines dissolved in water or benzene. The amine/ phosphate molar ratios in the reaction mixtures were 0.43, 0.85, 1.71 and 3.41. The nitrogen/phosphorus atomic ratio in the intercalation compound was not changed by the amine/phosphate molar ratio. The interlayer distances of the intercalates obtained in the reaction mixtures with molar ratios of 3.41 and 1.71 increased with an increase in the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain of the amine. The slope of the straight line obtained in plot of interlayer distance versus number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain of the amine indicates that the amine molecules form a double layer in the interlayer space of the phosphate and are inclined at an approximate angle of 67.7° to the phosphate layer. The interlayer distances of the intercalates of butyl- to nonylamines obtained at the molar ratio of 0.85 are smaller than those of the corresponding compounds from the molar ratios of 3.41 and 1.71, while those of decyl- to hexadecylamine intercalates lie on the previously discussed line. This behaviour is interpreted by assuming kink formation in the short alkyl chains between the phosphate layers.

Demonstrated successfully a 20 km fiber-optic transmission of a 156 Mb/s-DBPSK 60 GHz optical mm-wave signal with a new modulation technique employed; the dual-mode phase shift keying modulation (DMPM) method that we have proposed for the use in advanced mm-wave fiber-radio systems based on the passive base stations (PBSs). The experiment was performed to investigate the DMPM performance from a realistic viewpoint, and the following attractive features were confirmed for its PBS application; high modulation index, high dispersion tolerance and compactness.

A low-noise and broadband optical receiver is developed for 10-Gb/s communication systems. This receiver has a high transimpedance of 54 dB Omega and a broadband width of 15 GHz. It operates with an extremely low averaged equivalent input noise current of 7.0 pA/ square root Hz in the 0.5-8-GHz range. From the results of transmission experiments using a 10-Gb/s NRZ (nonreturn-to-zero) signal, a maximum optical sensitivity of -18.0 dBm at a bit error rate of 10/sup -9/ is obtained. Recently, the application of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) to access networks with an analogue subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) transmission technique has been investigated. For CATV systems, the EDFAs need to maintain their low noise and distortion characteristics without using high quality but expensive optical components. We examine noise and distortion characteristics of EDFAs with low cost ordinary optical components (e.g. a single-stage isolator with a modest amount of polarisation mode dispersion (PMD), a fused wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) with some polarisation dependent loss (PDL)), which are readily available, and show, for the first time, that EDFAs with optical components of less stringent requirements can be applied to the above mentioned systems without incurring noticeable performance degradation. This study suggests that the mass production of inexpensive EDFAs for AM-CATV access networks is quite feasible.

A novel optical duobinary coding (ODC) using an OTDM method is proposed. The OTDM duobinary spares the expensive high speed electronics and generates little signal intersymbol interference, while keeping intact all the benefits of conventional optical duobinary.

The feasibility of OTDM/WDM transmission systems was investigated by a single channel 80 Gbit/s-1000 km and three channels WDM-600 km transmission, using mode-locked LDs with an 80 Gbit/s OTDM module and multiple DM transmission lines.

DWDM transmission characteristics of non-linear RZ pulses with duty-cycle of more than 50% and initial phase alternation are investigated both numerically and experimentally. The effect of initial phase alternation with OTDM technique is experimentally evaluated with the 40 Gbit/s based DM nonlinear RZ in both single-channel and DWDM transmission.

1. The effects of anti-platelet drugs on human whole blood aggregation were evaluated using a novel whole blood aggregometer by a screen filtration pressure (SFP) method. 2. The SFP whole blood aggregometer was found to successfully detect whole blood aggregation induced by ADP, collagen and TRAP by measuring the SFP of blood samples. The platelet aggregation threshold index (PATI), the concentration of agonist required with an inducing pressure rate of 50%, varied time-dependently after collection of blood. High values for ADP and collagen were noted immediately after blood collection, suggesting low aggregation activity of platelets, and gradually increase thereafter. 3. Cilostazol (phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor), dipyridamole, aspirin and tirofiban all inhibited whole blood aggregation in vitro. Inhibitory effects of cilostazol and dipyridamole, but not tirofiban, were markedly enhanced 6 or 7 fold by long pre-incubation (60 min), compared with short pre-incubation (2 min). Such enhancement was only observed with ADP- and not collagen-induced whole blood aggregation. A similar phenomenon was also observed for aggregation with platelet rich plasma (PRP). Cilostazol inhibition of ADP-induced platelet aggregation was more potent with PRP than whole blood (PATI(200)=3.80+/-0.95 microM for whole blood; 2.04+/-0.61 microM for PRP). Inhibitory effects of dipyridamole were attenuated in PRP without erythrocytes. 4. These results demonstrate that the SFP aggregometer can sensitively detect anti-platelet aggregatory effects of various kinds of drugs. So that it is a useful tool for evaluation of anti-platelet drugs.

We determined the clinicopathological features of primary lung carcinomas with rhabdoid cells by defining the immunophenotype of rhabdoid cells and analysing survival.Rhabdoid cells are distinctive in having an eccentric nucleus and a large intracytoplasmic inclusion on routinely stained sections. Based on the number of rhabdoid cells, 45 cases of large cell carcinoma were divided into the following three types: lung tumour with a rhabdoid phenotype (LTRP) (n=4), lung carcinoma with a small number of rhabdoid cells (LCSR) (n=10), large cell carcinoma containing no rhabdoid cells (LCNR) (n=31). LTRP is composed of at least 10% rhabdoid cells. In LCSR the percentage of rhabdoid cells is less than 10%. LTRP and LCSR are associated with locally advanced disease. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for epithelial markers in all LTRP and eight LCSR, for neuroendocrine markers in one LTRP and three LCSR. The outcome is worse for patients with LTRP than LCSR or LCNR. LCSR shows a trend close to LCNR. Stage-matched survival analysis, however, revealed no statistically significant difference among the histological subtypes.Rhabdoid cells are heterogeneous except for epithelial markers and vimentin positivity. Less than 5% of rhabdoid cells has a negligible effect on prognosis.

Recent development of the studies on phase transition observing nonequilibrium relaxation (NER) processes is given. Scaling theory of NER process, some useful NER function and local exponent analysis are given. The result of NER analysis of three-dimensional Ising model is reviewed as an example.

Polarization switching and hysteresis are observed in a semiconductor laser with a two‐armed polarization‐sensitive external cavity. An intracavity polarization‐dependent saturable absorber is placed asymmetrically in one of the two arms of the external cavity so that one polarization mode is saturated more strongly than the other. The observed phenomena can be explained by the complementary processes of competition in the gain region and the polarization‐dependent saturable loss in the external cavity. This mechanism is potentially useful as the basis of a two‐mode switchable and bistable diode laser for applications as high‐speed optical memories and logic gates.

Because the confinement of carriers in a quantum well constraints the crystal momentum of the carriers near the band edge to directions close to the well normal, the selection rules for conduction to heavy‐hole transitions yield a large anisotropy in the absorption cross section. We predict a new type of room‐temperature polarization bistability based upon this effect in a semiconductor laser with an intracavity multiple quantum well saturable absorber. Rate equation analyses of the static device characteristics as a function of various parameters are presented, and show that two‐mode bistable behavior with large hysteresis is possible over a broad range of conditions. Other modes of operation, including all‐optical switching and tristable operation, have been verified by numerical calculation.

Trans-sternal bilateral thoracotomy has been performed in 4 patients with bilateral metastatic lung tumors. The primary lesion was rectum in one case and the colon in three cases. Two patients were male and 2 were female. Their ages ranged from 63 to 78 years old. An inframammary incision was made with the patient in the supine position, and the chest was entered via the 4th or 5th intercostal space. This procedure provided excellent exposure of the entire mediastinum. Postoperative pain was comparatively severe in the early postoperative period, but was controlled by administering an epidural block. This procedure allows good exposure of the entire thoracic space through a single operative field. We conclude that trans-sternal bilateral thoracotomy is an excellent approach in the patient with bilateral metastatic lung tumors.

Optical pulses with repetition rates up to several hundred MHz have been generated through a polarization self‐modulation effect in an external cavity semiconductor laser modified by the insertion of a quarter‐wave retardation plate. These pulses are generated without the need for any high‐speed electronics. At higher bias, period doubling and chaotic phenomena are also observed.

Multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) is one of the major factors for non-P-glycoprotein (PGp)-mediated multidrug resistance. We reported previously that overexpression of the MRP gene was related to the prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is unclear how MRP expression is regulated in NSCLC. In this study, we examined MRP and mutant p53 expression in 107 NSCLCs by immunohistochemical procedures. Forty-seven (43.9%) of these 107 NSCLCs were positive for MRP in the cytoplasm. Mutant p53-positive NSCLC showed a significant correlation with MRP overexpression (P=.011). Coexpression of MRP and p53 in the same cells of NSCLC was confirmed by double-staining procedures. Twenty-six patients with MRP-positive tumors who underwent postoperative chemotherapy with MRP-related anticancer drugs (vindesine and etoposide) had significantly poorer prognoses than did those with MRP-negative tumors (P=.017). This correlation between MRP expression and prognosis was also seen in Stage III patients (P=.022) and in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (P=.062). NSCLC patients with coexpression of MRP and p53 showed poorer prognoses than did those without MRP and p53 (P=.014). These results suggested that MRP overexpression affected by mutant p53 had a significant effect on prognosis through atypical non-PGp-mediated multidrug resistance in NSCLC.

A 65-year-old man was facing to tracheal stenosis due to proximally developed lung cancer with hypercalcemia mediated by production of PTHrP from the cancer cells. We treated the stenosis use of Dumon stent and hypercalcemia with drugs such as biphosphonate and so on. The treatment was effectively keep the patient under better performance status for about 3.5 months.

Stromal vascularity is thought to be a major factor involved in the progression of carcinoma. However, the crucial mechanisms of vascularization in the stroma are not well understood. Vascularity could be regulated by various cytokines produced by neoplastic or stromal cells in carcinoma. Thrombospondin (TSP) has an inhibitory role against vascularization in vitro, although the biological significance of TSP has not been characterized in vivo. We examined expression of TSP1 and TSP2 genes in 78 non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) and 33 extraneoplastic lung tissue samples by reverse transcription-PCR. TSP1 expression was detected in 66.7% (52 of 78) of NSCLCs and in 69.7% (23 of 33) of extraneoplastic lung tissue specimens. TSP2 expression was seen in 48.7% (38 of 78) of NSCLCs, whereas 72.7% (24 of 33) of extraneoplastic lung tissue samples showed TSP2 gene expression. TSP2 expression was significantly decreased in NSCLC as compared with extraneoplastic lung tissue (chi2 test, P=0.019). Vascularity in the NSCLC was inversely correlated with TSP2 gene expression (Mann-Whitney U test, P=0.009). Patients with adenocarcinoma positive for TSP2 gene expression (22 of 49) showed significantly better prognosis than those without TSP2 (27 of 49; Cox-Mantel test, P=0.034). TSP1 expression showed no apparent correlation with these factors. These results suggested that TSP2 had an inhibitory role against vascularization and progression of NSCLC.

We report six cases of primary pulmonary lymphoma in which a gene-rearranged band was shown by Southern blot analysis of transbronchial or surgical biopsy specimens. The cases were 3 mens and 4 women with an average age of 59.6, who had abnormal pulmonary shadows on chest X-ray. Two cases had Sjögren's syndrome and one case had monoclonal gammopathy (IgM-lambda type). Histopathologic and immunologic examination revealed diffuse infiltration of small lymphocytes (B-cell type) in all cases, and histological features of lymphoepithelial lesion or lympho-cytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) in three cases. CT revealed an ill-defined margin, air-space consolidation, and air-bronchogram in all cases. A CT-angiogram sign was apparent in 2 cases. In all cases, Southern blot analysis of the tissue obtained from transbronchial or surgical biopsy revealed a gene re-arranged band, supporting the diagnosis of primary pulmonary lymphoma. We infer that an ill-defined margin, air-bronchogram and air space consolidation on CT were associated with the histopathological features of primary pulmonary lymphoma.

Duo A (Duo) normally alkylates adenine N3 at the 3' end of A + T-rich sequence in DNA. The addition of another minor groove binder, dist A (Dist), dramatically modulate the site of DNA alkylation by Duo with great acceleration of the reaction rate. In order to examine the mode of alkylation, the kinetics of the reaction under various conditions were examined. Based on the simulation of experimental data, a new reaction pathway was proposed.

Autonomous or continuous granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. (G-CSF)-production in malignant neoplasms is considered to induce leukocytosis without apparent infection. We examined G-CSF gene expression in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and discussed its clinicopathological significance. Northern blot analysis revealed G-CSF gene expression in 14 of 84 surgical specimens (16.7%, 10/30 squamous cell carcinoma, 3/50 adenocarcinoma, 1/4 large cell carcinoma). Eight patients (57.1%, 8/14) with NSCLC showing G-CSF gene-expression had peripheral blood leukocytosis (8,000/microliter). The prognosis was significantly worse in 10 stage I or II NSCLC showing G-CSF gene expression (p0.01, Cox-Mantel test). These findings suggest that G-CSF gene expression is common event in the early stage of primary NSCLC, while it cannot completely explain the leukocytosis induced by lung cancer.

A 40-year old woman had experienced repeated spontaneous pneumothorax on the right side at the beginning of each menstrual period for one year. The level of serum CA125 was high at 60 ng/ml. Right thoracotomy revealed the presence of multiple darkly-pigmented spots and several pinhole like perforations near the central tendon of the diaphragm. The partial resection of the diaphragm was done, endometrial tissues were detected histologically. Tha patient has been asymptomatic after operation and the level of serum CA125 is normal.

We report a 69-yr-old female with a liver mass which, when surgically resected, was believed to be the spontaneous complete necrosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. The preoperative level of alpha-fetoprotein was high at 1050 ng/ml, and the mass was grossly an encapsulated nodular lesion with septa. Histologically, no viable tumor cells were demonstrated. The alpha-fetoprotein level decreased to a normal range. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient is alive and well 1 yr after surgery.

The expression levels of nm23-H1 have been reported to correlate with the metastatic potential of some tumours. We have treated a child with a rare case of astrocytoma with diffuse osteoblastic metastases. We therefore decided to examine the expression of the nm23 gene product in 24 gliomas in order to clarify the association of its expression with the clinical features of the disease. A polyclonal antibody against a GST/nm23-H1 fusion protein was raised in rabbits. Twenty-four specimens, including 5 recurrent gliomas and one extraneural metastasis, were obtained from 19 patients treated surgically between 1990 and 1993 in our hospital. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on paraffin sections using an avidin-biotinyl peroxidase complex method. Of the 24 astrocytic neoplasms, 3 (12.5%) specimens from one patient with diffuse bony metastases stained intensely with nm23-H1. Two specimens obtained from glioblastoma multiforme patients stained weakly. The other 19 specimens were negative for nm23-H1 expression. Little or no nm23 expression was observed in adjacent nontumourous cerebral tissues. The results suggest that high levels of nm23 expression might correlate with extraneural metastatic potential in astrocytic neoplasms.
