Search

State-of-the-art steel-timber composite structures (STC), using cold-formed steel (CFS) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), are considered in this review. Literature on this type of construction solution is reviewed to provide an overview of the characteristics and advantages of STC. Previous experimental and numerical studies with STC structures, mainly composite solutions with CFS beams and CLT panels, are discussed to assess the behavior of this structural typology. A comprehensive description of the connection systems performance in different STC structures is also provided. Furthermore, the design and analytical methods currently available are presented. Likewise, details on aspects related to dynamic properties and fire resistance are discussed.

We investigate the properties (e.g. star formation rate, dust attentuation, stellar mass and metallicity) of a sample of infrared luminous galaxies at z \sim 1 via near-IR spectroscopy with Subaru-FMOS. Our sample consists of Herschel SPIRE and Spitzer MIPS selected sources in the COSMOS field with photometric redshifts in the range 0.7 = 0.51\pm0.27 for = 10^12 Lsol sources at = 1.36. By comparing star formation rates estimated from the IR and from the dust uncorrected H{\alpha} line we find a strong relationship between dust attenuation and star formation rate. This relation is broadly consistent with that previously seen in star-forming galaxies at z ~ 0.1. Finally, we investigate the metallicity via the N2 ratio, finding that z ~ 1 IR-selected sources are indistinguishable from the local mass-metallicity relation. We also find a strong correlation between dust attentuation and metallicity, with the most metal-rich IR-sources experiencing the largest levels of dust attenuation.

We report the observation of a new dwarf nova, OT J055717+683226, during its first-ever recorded superoutburst in December 2006. Our observation shows that this object is an SU UMa-type dwarf nova having a very short superhump period of 76.67+/- 0.03 min (0.05324+/-0.00002 d). The next superoutburst was observed in March 2008. The recurrence time of superoutbursts (supercycle) is, hence, estimated to be ~480 d. The supercycle is much shorter than those of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae having supercycles of >~ 10 yr, which are a major population of dwarf novae in the shortest orbital period regime (, Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We systematically surveyed period variations of superhumps in SU UMa-type dwarf novae based on newly obtained data and past publications. In many systems, the evolution of superhump period are found to be composed of three distinct stages: early evolutionary stage with a longer superhump period, middle stage with systematically varying periods, final stage with a shorter, stable superhump period. During the middle stage, many systems with superhump periods less than 0.08 d show positive period derivatives. Contrary to the earlier claim, we found no clear evidence for variation of period derivatives between superoutburst of the same object. We present an interpretation that the lengthening of the superhump period is a result of outward propagation of the eccentricity wave and is limited by the radius near the tidal truncation. We interpret that late stage superhumps are rejuvenized excitation of 3:1 resonance when the superhumps in the outer disk is effectively quenched. Many of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae showed long-enduring superhumps during the post-superoutburst stage having periods longer than those during the main superoutburst. The period derivatives in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae are found to be strongly correlated with the fractional superhump excess, or consequently, mass ratio. WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with a long-lasting rebrightening or with multiple rebrightenings tend to have smaller period derivatives and are excellent candidate for the systems around or after the period minimum of evolution of cataclysmic variables (abridged)., Comment: 239 pages, 225 figures, PASJ accepted

症例は肛門疼痛と血性膿排出,肛囲腫脹を訴え来院した50歳の男性.最初,肛門周囲膿瘍(痔瘻)と診断したが,胸部X線撮影と胸部CTで活動性結核病変が存在したことから,肛門周囲の生検を行い,肛門結核と診断した.抗結核剤投与で良好に治癒した.結核は減少してきたが鑑別診断としては重要な病気であり,肛門周囲膿瘍,肛門潰瘍の非定型的経過と稀な肛門病変を見た時には,本症を念頭において正確な診断を下し,不必要な手術を避けるべきである.

内痔核の術後出血にて診断し得た,出血性疾患であるvon Willebrand病(vWD)を経験した.症例は53歳の女性で,肛門脱出と出血を主訴として近医で保存的加療を行っていたが,効果が不十分なため痔核結紮術が行われた.しかし術後の止血が困難なため,当院を紹介され受診した.当院での術前検査では,出血時間2分・血小板24.5万/μ1であった.当院での再手術,痔核結紮切除術術後11日目とユ7日目に後出血を再び認め,検査で第VIII因子低下,von Willebrand因子の低下を認めたため,von Willebrand病と診断した.治療は乾燥濃縮人血液凝固第VIII因子製剤(コンファクト®F)を使用し,良好な経過を辿ったので若干の文献的考察を含めて報告する.

Tailgut cystは仙骨前腔に発症し,ときに癌化を伴う比較的まれな疾患である.複雑痔瘻との鑑別を要したtailgut cystを経験したので報告する.症例は60歳の男性で,骨盤直腸窩痔瘻(IV型)と診断して,初回,経肛門的穿刺術を施行したが,1年9カ月後に再発症状で来院した.直腸指診,経直腸的超音波検査,CT検査にてtailgut cystと診断した.手術は後方経路(仙骨尾骨旁切開)で,尾骨合併切除により完全切除し得た.病理組織学的にtailgut cystと確認した.

In order to investigate the growth of super-massive black holes (SMBHs), we construct the black hole mass function (BHMF) and Eddington ratio distribution function (ERDF) of X-ray-selected broad-line AGNs at z~1.4 in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Survey field. In this redshift range, a significant part of the accretion growth of SMBHs is thought to be taking place. Black hole masses of X-ray-selected broad-line AGNs are estimated using the width of the broad MgII line and the 3000A monochromatic luminosity. We supplement the MgII FWHM values with the Ha FWHM obtained from our NIR spectroscopic survey. Using the black hole masses of broad-line AGNs at redshifts between 1.18 and 1.68, the binned broad-line AGN BHMF and ERDF are calculated using the Vmax method. To properly account for selection effects that impact the binned estimates, we derive the corrected broad-line AGN BHMF and ERDF by applying the Maximum Likelihood method, assuming that the ERDF is constant regardless of the black hole mass. We do not correct for the non-negligible uncertainties in virial BH mass estimates. If we compare the corrected broad-line AGN BHMF with that in the local Universe, the corrected BHMF at z~1.4 has a higher number density above 10^8 Msolar but a lower number density below that mass range. The evolution may be indicative of a down-sizing trend of accretion activity among the SMBH population. The evolution of broad-line AGN ERDF from z=1.4 to 0 indicates that the fraction of broad-line AGNs with accretion rate close to the Eddington-limit is higher at higher redshifts., 23 pages with 18 figures. Fiber Multi Object Spectrograph \FMOS" on Subaru Telescope is capable of con guring 400 bers on the 30-arcmin diameter eld of view at the prime focus for near-infrared (0.9{1.8 m) spectroscopy, and this instrumenthas been open as a common-use instrument since May 2010. In this article, an overview of the instrument isgiven rst, and then the typical operational sequence in science observation and a few notable features of theinstrument are explained. In x 5, the instrument performance in terms of ber positioning, auto guiding, andsensitivity to emission lines are highlighted. Recently (since March 2012) a Subaru Strategic Program (SSP)has started with FMOS to conduct a wide- eld galaxy survey for a cosmological experiment. Upgrading bercon guration by using a \metrology camera" has also been under discussion, which will enable to measure thepositions of the 400 bers quickly and shorten the ber con guration time signi cantly. We report on high-dispersion optical spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary A0535+262/V725 Tau during the giant outburst in November/December 2009 and after it. The observed emission line profiles, reflecting the structure of the geometrically thin circumstellar envelope of the Be star (Be disk), show drastic variabilities and indicate the existence of a warped component. The enhanced blue shoulder seen after periastron passage implies the gas stream from a dense part of the Be disk to the neutron star., accepted to PASJ

We carried out an international spectroscopic observation campaign of the dwarf nova GW Librae (GW Lib) during the 2007 superoutburst. Our observation period covered the rising phase of the superoutburst, maximum, slowly decaying phase (plateau), and long fading tail after the rapid decline from the plateau. The spectral features dramatically changed during the observations. In the rising phase, only absorption lines of H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, and H$\gamma$ were present. Around the maximum, the spectrum showed singly-peaked emission lines of H$\alpha$, He I 5876, He I 6678, He II 4686, and C III/N III as well as absorption lines of Balmer components and He I. These emission lines significantly weakened in the latter part of the plateau phase. In the fading tail, all the Balmer lines and He I 6678 were in emission, as observed in quiescence. We find that the center of the H$\alpha$ emission component was mostly stable over the whole orbital phase, being consistent with the low inclination of the system. Comparing with the observational results of WZ Sge during the 2001 superoutburst, the same type of stars as GW Lib seen with a high inclination angle, we interpret that the change of the H$\alpha$ profile before the fading tail phase is attributed to a photoionized region formed at the outer edge of the accretion disk, irradiated from the white dwarf and inner disk., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

The few existing IP hand-off methods that support multicast are not really practical. This paper proposes a seamless hand-off method for multicast receivers. The proposed method observes the wireless link connection intensity to setup the multicast stream in the new subnet in advance while terminating the old connection more rapidly. Computer simulations verify that our method minimizes packet loss caused by hand-off and the needless transmission of multicast packets by the old subnet to use bandwidth more effectively.

The development of a concatenated FEC (forward error correction) codec and its associating PSK (phase shift keying) modem aimed at low-bit-rate satellite communications use are discussed, and their performance in a field test at the 14-GHz/11-GHz band using an INTELSAT-V satellite is assessed. The FEC codec consists of a convolutional encoder with a Viterbi decoder for inner coding and a Reed-Solomon encoder with a Euclid decoder for outer coding. A coding gain of 7.5 dB was achieved at a bit error rate (BER) of 10/sup -6/ relative to the uncoded performance, and virtually error-free transmission was achieved at a carrier/noise (C/N) ratio of 0 dB. Some tests were conducted to transmit a voice signal and G3- and G4-facsimile signals, which revealed that the qualities of both received facsimile signals were highly dependent on the event error probabilities rather than the BERs. It is concluded that the developed FEC combined modem is useful for reliable data transmission in the low C/N ratio environment. >

The authors address a procedure for detecting the timing of the on-board IF-band switch which provides timing reference to multibeam SS-TDMA satellite communication systems. We propose a new procedure using a pattern matching technique to detect the timing of the trailing edge of the sync window against the timing of the transmitted reference burst. Moreover, we evaluate the performance of this procedure by numerical calculation and computer simulation. It is shown that the proposed procedure has a high accuracy in detecting the on-board IF-switch timing.

A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital for further examination of a gingival mass. Chest radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a bulky mass originating in the upper portion of the left lung, in contact with a chronic empyema lesion that first occurred after resection for pulmonary tuberculosis. Examination of a specimen obtained by percutaneous needle biopsy of the mass led to the diagnosis of large-cell carcinoma. Laboratory findings on admission showed marked leukocytosis (48,100/microliter) without evidence of severe a bacterial infection. The level of G-CSF in serum was abnormally high (246 pg/ml, normal value:30 pg/ml). Chemotherapy with vindesine, ifosfamide, and cisplatin resulted in shrinkage of the gingival mass, and a decrease in the G-CSF level to 66 pg/ml. Immunohistochemical staining with an anti-G-CSF monoclonal antibody to the primary lung tumor and the gingival mass obtained at autopsy was positive for cytoplasmic G-CSF.

We present near-infrared spectroscopic observations of star-forming galaxies at z~1.4 with FMOS on the Subaru Telescope. We observed K-band selected galaxies in the SXDS/UDS fields with K10^{9.5} Msun, and expected F(Halpha)>10^{-16} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}. 71 objects in the sample have significant detections of Halpha. For these objects, excluding possible AGNs identified from the BPT diagram, gas-phase metallicities are obtained from [NII]/Halpha line ratio. The sample is split into three stellar mass bins, and the spectra are stacked in each stellar mass bin. The mass-metallicity relation obtained at z~1.4 is located between those at z~0.8 and z~2.2. We constrain an intrinsic scatter to be ~0.1 dex or larger in the mass-metallicity relation at z~1.4; the scatter may be larger at higher redshifts. We found trends that the deviation from the mass-metallicity relation depends on the SFR and the half light radius: Galaxies with higher SFR and larger half light radii show lower metallicities at a given stellar mass. One possible scenario for the trends is the infall of pristine gas accreted from IGM or through merger events. Our data points show larger scatter than the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) at z~0.1 and the average metallicities slightly deviate from the FMR. The compilation of the mass-metallicity relations at z~3 to z~0.1 shows that they evolve smoothly from z~3 to z~0 without changing the shape so much except for the massive part at z~0., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Six patients with asymptomatic primary pulmonary Cryptococcosis are reported. In all of the patients, the disease was detected by annual chest X-ray during mass screening for lung cancer or during follow-up for pulmonary tuberculosis or gastric cancer. The chest X-ray findings consisted of a solitary pulmonary nodule in 4 patients and multiple pulmonary nodules in 2. Only one patient who could not be histologically diagnosed by bronchofiberscopy underwent surgical resection. However, the other 5 patients were histologically diagnosed by transbronchial biopsy with bronchofiberscopy. They were treated with oral antifungal agents, namely flucytosine (5-FC) and/or fluconazole, with marked improvement of chest X-ray findings. These results indicate that transbronchial biopsy with bronchofiberscopy and oral administration of antifungal agents instead of initial surgical resection are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of primary pulmonary cryptococcosis.

Cyclosporin-induced gingival enlargement was presented. Enlargement was noted at several sites in the mouth of five patients taking Cyclosporin following liver transplantation. Papillary gingival enlargement was observed to affect the entire maxilla and mandible. Enlargement was particularly marked in the interdental papillary region on the labial side of the anterior teeth of the maxilla. Discoloration of the teeth was observed. Radiographic findings were unremarkable. Oral management of these patients is the prevention of dental caries and infection originating in the area of gingival enlargement. It is important to begin proper brushing as early as possible for suppressing progression of gingival enlargement. For prevention of dental caries, prophylaxis is more important in the case of liver transplantation than with normal patients. It should be stressed to the patients or their parents that periodic examination, topical application of fluoride and pit and fissure sealants are of special importance.

A case of pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum in a 4-year-4-month boy, whose dental treatment was performed under general anesthesia, was reported. For the general anesthesia, the medication Digoxin was stopped 24 hours before the treatment. For the prevention of bacterial endocarditis, medication consisting on antibiotics of the penicillin series was administered 24 hours before the treatment. The anesthesia was administered with the modified N.L.A. method with Ketamine and Diazepam. The dental treatment went smoothly, and was finished within 1-hour-15 mins from the start. Anesthesia was administered for 1-hour-45 mins. The prognosis was good, and the patient was discharged the next day. It should be noted that as for performing dental treatment under anesthesia or not using anesthesia, there are some different opinions. We think that it must be discussed from the point of view of the effect of the dental treatment on the patient versus the danger of the anesthesia. In this case, we found that, under general anesthesia, stress of the patient was reduced, and the dental treatment was able to be performed smoothly and safely.

In order to evaluate the efficacy of X-ray signs for the differential diagnosis of small lung cancer from tuberculoma, a cooperative study was carried out. X-ray films of 64 cases (lung cancer 35, tuberculoma 29) were read by 11 experienced chest physicians independently. The positivity of various X-ray signs were assessed respectively and obtained data were analysed with ROC analysis method. "Ill defined contour", "unevenness of density", "paleness" were proved to be relatively useful as a diagnostic tool, but "notch", "pleural indentation" were not useful in differentiating lung cancer from tuberculoma. It was also noted that great interindividual variations existed on the judgements of X-ray signs among chest specialists, and the conquest of which may be a crucial key for the universal validity of these signs.

In order to increase the accuracy of diagnosis in lung cancer, analysis concerning cytological and histological correlation was attempted. The present study consists of 106 patients, who were seen during the past approximately five years and underwent radical surgery to remove tumors completely; mere biopsy specimens were excluded. These patients were 63 years old on the average, 78 males and 28 females, 29 cases of the hilar type (H) and 77 of the peripheral type (P), and 27 and 76 cases of the clinical stage I in H and P, respectively. Histologically, there were 53 adenocarcinomas (Ad), 38 squamous cell carcinomas (Sq), 4 adenosquamous cell carcinomas (Ad + Sq), 5 large cell carcinomas (LCC), and 6 small cell carcinomas (SCC); among them, 3 Ad and 21 Sq in H, and 50 Ad and 17 Sq in P. The overall positive percentages were 65.5 (H) and 26.0 (P) by combination of spontaneous, airsol-induced and Saccomanno's methods, against 96.6 (H) and 72.8 (P) with inclusion of brushing method. 94.8% of Sq in H and 66.7% of Ad and 70.6% of Sq in P were positive by the brushing. A comparative study of these four methods, performed at least once on the same patient, also confirmed the superiority of brushing. Cyto- and histological agreement was 21/21 (100%) for Sq in H, whereas 30/34 (88.2%) for Ad and 13/15 (86.7%) for Sq in P. In conclusion, cyto- and histological findings in H and P corresponded well, and as far as cytology of peripheral type is concerned, a combined method, especially with brushing, is strongly recommended.

Changes of basophil leucocyte counts of the peripheral blood in bronchial asthma were investigated mainly by our improved method of KOVACS (4). The results are as follows. I) The basophils in bronchial asthma generally show a higher count than in healthy controls. 2) During the interval of repeated asthmatic attacks the basophil count is higher than in the asymptomatic period. 3) Particularly in an episode of asthmatic attack, the basophils increase immediately before the attack and decrease to the normal level or lower after the attack has begun. 4) During asthmatic attacks it may be possible to expect another attack, if the basophil count again tends to increase from the previous low count. 5) This counting method of basophils is easy enough for the routine examination like calculation of peripheralleucocytes. 6) Observation of the changes of peripheral basophils appears to be a useful laboratory aid for the diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation of bronchial asthma, making possible an early detection of the next attack. A discussion is given of the behavior of the basophils in bronchial asthma.

The accuracy of cytologic diagnosis and typing was examined in 154 patients, 113 males and 41 females, who underwent radical surgery during the past six years. There were 42 central and 112 peripheral lesions: 6 adenocarcinomas and 28 squamous-cell carcinomas were centrally located and 69 adenocarcinomas and 27 squamous-cell carcinomas were peripherally located. Repetition of sputum sampling at least three times was preferred, especially in central lesions, which were detected in 57% to 64% of the cases by either three-day-pooled or aerosol-induced specimens. Peripheral lesions required brushing to enhance the accuracy. The overall typing accuracy was 64.3%, ranging from 83.6% in squamous-cell carcinoma to 25.0% in large-cell carcinoma. Cytologic positivity correlated well with the finding of tumors more than 3 cm in diameter. Adenocarcinoma and squamous-cell carcinoma showed no significant difference in frequency of regional lymph nodal metastases. The value of judging the accuracy of cytologic diagnosis and typing on the histologic evaluation of the entire resected lesion, rather than on biopsy specimens, is emphasized.

Natural killer activity of lymphocyte against M-HeLa or MKN-28 cells was measured in the gastric cancer tissue, regional lymph nodes, spleen and peripheral blood, and also the influences of injection of Nocardia CWS into the tumor was studied. Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte showed higher rates of T and T gamma cells than the lymphocyte of normal gastric tissue, nearly the same value as the lymphocyte in peripheral blood. NK activity of the lymphocyte in the peripheral blood of the gastric cancer patient showed a significant decrease compared to that of the normal subject. NK activity of the tumor infiltrating lymphocyte was markedly lower than that of the lymphocyte in peripheral blood, and was at the same level as that of the normal stomach and the lymph node. Endoscopic injection of N-CWS into the gastric cancer tissue intensified the cytotoxicity of lymphocytes in the cancer tissue and regional lymph nodes to MKN-28 cells derived from gastric cancer 5 to 17 days later, however, the activity against M-HeLa did not augment. Human fibroblast interferon (interferon beta) increased NK activity of lymphocytes in peripheral blood and spleen, but showed no influence on the activity of lymphocytes in the gastric cancer tissue and the regional lymph nodes.
