The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of brain electric field induced by symptom provocation in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in comparison to healthy controls in the resting state. For this purpose, EEG recordings in conditions of initial rest, clean control, symptom provocation by imaginal exposure, and final rest were used for computing spatiotemporal activity characteristics based on microstate segmentation. Within-group comparisons were significant for the symptom provocation condition: OCD showed high global field power (GFP) and transition rates into a medial frontal microstate, whereas healthy controls showed high frequency of occurrence and high percent of dwelling time for a medial occipitoparietal microstate. Between-group comparisons demonstrated significantly lower GFP and dwelling time for the medial occipitoparietal microstate in OCD in several conditions including initial rest and symptom provocation. In addition, OCD compared to healthy controls showed significant instability of the medial occipitoparietal microstate, with high preference for transitions into the medial frontal microstate. In conclusion, during rest and symptom provocation, OCD patients make preferential use of a medial frontal brain network, with concomitant reduction of use of a medial occipitoparietal network, as shown by dwelling times, explained variance, and dynamic transition rates. These findings support the idea of a possible biological marker for OCD, which might correspond to pathological hyperactivation of the frontal control network.

Objectives: eLORETA (exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography) is a technique created by Pascual-Marqui et al. [Int J Psychophysiol. 1994 Oct; 18(1): 49–65] for the 3-dimensional representation of current source density in the brain by electroencephalography (EEG) data. Kurtosis analysis allows for the identification of spiky activity in the brain. In this study, we focused on the evaluation of the reliability of eLORETA kurtosis analysis. For this purpose, the results of eLORETA kurtosis source localization of paroxysmal activity in EEG were compared with those of eLORETA current source density (CSD) analysis of EEG data in 3 epilepsy patients with partial seizures. Methods: EEG was measured using a digital EEG system with 19 channels. We set the bandpass filter at traditional frequency band settings (1–4, 4–8, 8–15, 15–30, and 30–60 Hz) and 5–10 and 20–70 Hz and performed eLORETA kurtosis to compare the source localization of paroxysmal activity with that of visual interpretation of EEG data and CSD analysis of eLORETA in focal epilepsy patients. Results: The eLORETA kurtosis analysis of EEG data preprocessed by bandpass filtering from 20 to 70 Hz and traditional frequency band settings did not show any discrete paroxysmal source activity compatible with the results of CSD analysis of eLORETA. In all 3 cases, eLORETA kurtosis analysis filtered at 5–10 Hz showed paroxysmal activities in the theta band, which were all consistent with the visual inspection results and the CSD analysis results. Discussion: Our findings suggested that eLORETA kurtosis analysis of EEG data might be useful for the identification of spiky paroxysmal activity sources in epilepsy patients. Since EEG is widely used in the clinical practice of epilepsy, eLORETA kurtosis analysis is a promising method that can be applied to epileptic activity mapping.

In a seminal paper by von Stein and Sarnthein (2000), it was hypothesized that "bottom-up" information processing of "content" elicits local, high frequency (beta-gamma) oscillations, whereas "top-down" processing is "contextual", characterized by large scale integration spanning distant cortical regions, and implemented by slower frequency (theta-alpha) oscillations. This corresponds to a mechanism of cortical information transactions, where synchronization of beta-gamma oscillations between distant cortical regions is mediated by widespread theta-alpha oscillations. It is the aim of this paper to express this hypothesis quantitatively, in terms of a model that will allow testing this type of information transaction mechanism. The basic methodology used here corresponds to statistical mediation analysis, originally developed by (Baron and Kenny 1986). We generalize the classical mediator model to the case of multivariate complex-valued data, consisting of the discrete Fourier transform coefficients of signals of electric neuronal activity, at different frequencies, and at different cortical locations. The "mediation effect" is quantified here in a novel way, as the product of "dual frequency RV-coupling coefficients", that were introduced in (Pascual-Marqui et al 2016, http://arxiv.org/abs/1603.05343). Highlights • sLORETA analyses performed on 14 healthy adults at rest and during an arithmetic task. • Theta and alpha directed connectivity revealed ACC and left IPL as hubs during task. • Information flow between left IFG and STG suggested a feedback loop., Objectives The aim of this paper is to investigate cortical electric neuronal activity as an indicator of brain function, in a mental arithmetic task that requires sustained attention, as compared to the resting state condition. The two questions of interest are the cortical localization of different oscillatory activities, and the directional effective flow of oscillatory activity between regions of interest, in the task condition compared to resting state. In particular, theta and alpha activity are of interest here, due to their important role in attention processing. Methods We adapted mental arithmetic as an attention ask in this study. Eyes closed 61-channel EEG was recorded in 14 participants during resting and in a mental arithmetic task (“serial sevens subtraction”). Functional localization and connectivity analyses were based on cortical signals of electric neuronal activity estimated with sLORETA (standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography). Functional localization was based on the comparison of the cortical distributions of the generators of oscillatory activity between task and resting conditions. Assessment of effective connectivity was based on the iCoh (isolated effective coherence) method, which provides an appropriate frequency decomposition of the directional flow of oscillatory activity between brain regions. Nine regions of interest comprising nodes from the dorsal and ventral attention networks were selected for the connectivity analysis. Results Cortical spectral density distribution comparing task minus rest showed significant activity increase in medial prefrontal areas and decreased activity in left parietal lobe for the theta band, and decreased activity in parietal-occipital regions for the alpha1 band. At a global level, connections among right hemispheric nodes were predominantly decreased during the task condition, while connections among left hemispheric nodes were predominantly increased. At more detailed level, decreased flow from right inferior frontal gyrus to anterior cingulate cortex for theta, and low and high alpha oscillations, and increased feedback (bidirectional flow) between left superior temporal gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus, were observed during the arithmetic task. Conclusions Task related medial prefrontal increase in theta oscillations possibly corresponds to frontal midline theta, while parietal decreased alpha1 activity indicates the active role of this region in the numerical task. Task related decrease of intracortical right hemispheric connectivity support the notion that these nodes need to disengage from one another in order to not interfere with the ongoing numerical processing. The bidirectional feedback between left frontal-temporal-parietal regions in the arithmetic task is very likely to be related to attention network working memory function. Significance The methods of analysis and the results presented here will hopefully contribute to clarify the roles of the different EEG oscillations during sustained attention, both in terms of their functional localization and in terms of how they integrate brain function by supporting information flow between different cortical regions. The methodology presented here might be clinically relevant in evaluating abnormal attention function.

Dual two-phase intermetallic alloy that has an alloy composition of Ni75Al9V13Nb3 and is composed of geometrically close packed (GCP) Ni3Al (L12) and Ni3V (D022) phases was studied, focusing on the effect of TiC addition on high-temperature tensile properties. The two-phase microstructures defined by primary Ni3Al precipitates and eutectoid region consisting of Ni3Al and Ni3V phases were kept and were dispersed by TiC particles. EPMA analysis showed that alloy compositions in matrix of the TiC added alloy were different from those in the base alloy. The positive temperature dependence of flow strength was observed for all TiC added alloys. In low temperature range the maximum strengthening took place at 1 at.% TiC content. On the other hand, tensile elongation increased with increasing TiC content up to 1 at.% TiC content and was independent of TiC content over 1 at.% in whole temperature ranges. Also, the TiC addition resulted in change of the fracture mode from brittle transgranular fracture to ductile transgranular fracture in low temperature range, and from brittle intergranular fracture to ductile transgranular fracture in high-temperature range. Possible mechanisms responsible for the strengthening and ductilization by TiC addition were interpreted, based on the behavior of C and Ti solutes, and Nb solute in the matrix, which were decomposed from TiC and affected by TiC addition, respectively.

We investigated the changes in directional cross frequency interactions between theta and alpha oscillations, across six cortical regions, induced by a symptom provocation procedure, in patients with OCD, and in normal controls. Nine OCD outpatients and nine controls participated in this study. Eyes closed EEG was recorded before and under the instruction to imagine that the towel placed on their hands is contaminated (symptom provocation, SP). Cortical electric neuronal activity were calculated with sLORETA at medial-prefrontal, precuneus, inferior-parietal, and dorsolateral-prefrontal cortices. Instantaneous amplitudes for the theta and alpha bands were obtained and used for computing Granger causal directional cross-frequency, cross-cortical interactions. In controls, SP is characterized by a significant increase in mPFC theta due to right fronto-parietal alpha. In contrast, SP in the OCD group mainly displayed alpha-alpha RIPL alpha decrease due to RDLPFC. A direct comparison of OCD and normal controls showed significant frontal decreases of theta-alpha interactions before SP. The symptom provocation procedure induced functional changes of cross-frequency connections in both groups involving core right hemisphere network nodes. Functional cross-frequency interactions involving all frontal nodes were decreased in OCD compared to controls during SP. These results support the use of cross-frequency interactions a possible trait marker of OCD.

Aims Although increased digitalis-like immunoreactive substances have been found in cases of hypertension and heart failure, no information is available about digitalis-like immunoreactive substances in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We investigated digitalis-like immunoreactive substances in the plasma and biopsied specimens of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Methods and Results In 40 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (27 with the non-obstructive type and 13 with the obstructive type), the plasma concentration of digitalis-like immunoreactive substances was studied by fluorescence polarization immunoassay. Right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy specimens were analysed immunohistochemically, using a monoclonal antibody against digoxin. An increase in digitalis-like immunoreactive substances of more than 0·2ng.ml−1in plasma was found in six of 27 patients with non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (22·2%) and five of 13 with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (38·4%). Under light microscopy, positive staining against the antibody was observed heterogeneously on some cardiocytes. In non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, digitalis-like immunoreactive substances in the plasma correlated with the left atrial dimension and inversely with the cardiac index. In obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, plasma and myocardial digitalis-like immunoreactive substances were positively correlated; they also correlated with left ventricular end-diastolic pressures. Under electron microscopy, digitalis-like immunoreactive substances were detected at the sarcolemma in the free wall, T-tubules, intercalated discs and Z-bands of cardiocytes. Conclusions Increased digitalis-like immunoreactive substances in plasma and cardiocytes, which may have been caused by pressure and/or volume overload, were found in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Digitalis-like immunoreactive substances may act on the sarcolemma of cardiocytes and be transported into the cytoplasm.

We propose a large-signal model that can simulate the power-added efficiency of p-pocket self-aligned gate GaAs MESFET's. This model includes a new drain current model and a gate bias-dependent RF output resistance to express the drain conductance and its frequency dispersion at each gate bias. In addition, gate-source and gate-drain capacitances are modeled by functions of two variables of gate and drain biases so as to fit the measured values of ion implanted channels. The simulated power-added efficiency agreed with the measured value with a maximum error of 5%. The intermodulation distortion was also simulated and the maximum difference between the simulated and measured results was reduced to one-fifth of the results simulated by the conventional model. Practical applications were demonstrated by the load-pull simulation and the /spl pi//4 shift QPSK-modulated signal simulation.

highlights A comparative study of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and healthy control subjects (NC) was carried out in terms of the cortical localization of oscillatory EEG activity. As compared to NC, FTD had significantly reduced alpha generators in fronto-temporal cortices, while AD showed significantly stronger delta generators that included the frontal lobes. ROC curves demonstrate a moderate separation of FTD, AD, and NC groups. abstract Objective: To determine the electrophysiological characteristics of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and the distinction with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: We performed analyses of global field power (GFP) which is a measure of whole brain electric field strength, and EEG neuroimaging analyses with sLORETA (standardized low resolution electromag- netic tomography), in the mild stages of FTD (n = 19; mean age = 68.11 ± 7.77) and AD (n = 19; mean age = 69.42 ± 9.57) patients, and normal control (NC) subjects (n = 22; mean age = 66.13 ± 6.02). Results: In the GFP analysis, significant group effects were observed in the delta (1.5-6.0 Hz), alpha1 (8.5- 10.0 Hz), and beta1 (12.5-18.0 Hz) bands. In sLORETA analysis, differences in activity were observed in the alpha1 band (NC > FTD) in the orbital frontal and temporal lobe, in the delta band (AD > NC) in wide- spread areas including the frontal lobe, and in the beta1 band (FTD > AD) in the parietal lobe and senso- rimotor area. Conclusions: Differential patterns of brain regions and EEG frequency bands were observed between the FTD and AD groups in terms of pathological activity. Significance: FTD and AD patients in the early stages displayed different patterns in the cortical localiza- tion of oscillatory activity across different frequency bands.

Asymmetric tilt-angle-implanted lightly doped drain (LDD)-WN/sub x/-GaAs MESFETs with an optimized transconductance performance are discussed. A tilt-angle implantation is used to reduce the parasitic source resistance below the gate sidewall without increasing short- and narrow-channel effects. This leads to a transconductance increase of nearly 25% for submicrometer FETs while the gate-source capacitance increase is almost negligible. The influence of the implantation angle on the threshold voltage transconductance, and Schottky-barrier characteristics is reported. >

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by cognitive and memory dysfunctions, and is accompanied by default mode network (DMN) abnormalities. We investigated the neurophysiological basis of these dysfunctions by examining functional connectivity using standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA). Resting, eyes closed EEGs were recorded from 19 patients with mild AD and 22 healthy control subjects. Electrophysiological connectivity maps between parahippocampal gyri and all other cortical regions were computed, as well as pairwise connectivity among DMN regions. Between-group comparisons in 7 frequency bands were carried out. Beta2 connectivity was marginally decreased between right parahippocampus and right superior frontal gyrus, right precentral gyrus, and right occipital lobe in AD patients. They also showed significantly decreased alpha2 and beta2 connectivity between posterior cingulate gyrus and right inferior parietal lobe within DMN. Previous fMRI studies have shown AD decreased connectivity between parahippocampus, where significant neurological degeneration appears, and other brain regions. The disconnection between the hubs of DMN in sLORETA connectivity suggest AD patients have an abnormal DMN, in agreement with previous fMRI resting state networks studies. sLORETA connectivity provides complimentary information on the neurophysiological dysfunction between parahippocampus and other cortical areas, and on the DMN aberrance in patients with AD.

Cardiac microangiopathy may be involved in the development of heart failure in diabetes mellitus.To evaluate the effect of angiotensin II receptor blockade on cardiac function and fine structures in diabetes.Male Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats (n = 30), a model of spontaneously developing diabetes mellitus, and their diabetes resistant counterparts (n = 20) were used. At 30 weeks of age, when the OLETF rats show hyperglycaemic obesity with hyperinsulinaemia, the animals were divided into two groups and given candesartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker, 0.2 mg/kg/day, or vehicle for six weeks. Capillary density was evaluated in the left ventricular myocardium by electron microscopy, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity by zymography, and cytokines by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.Compared with the control rats, the OLETF rats at 36 weeks showed decreased peak negative dP/dt (mean (SD): 2350 (250) v 3492 (286) mm Hg/s) and increased cardiomyocyte diameter (24.3 (0.6) v 18.9 (0.6) microm) (both p0.05). Thickening of the capillary basement membranes and decreased capillary density were observed. Angiotensin receptor blockade improved almost all the haemodynamic variables, and the histological findings became similar to those of the controls. Angiotensin receptor blockade also activated MMP-2 and prevented an increase of inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-6, in the diabetic heart.Angiotensin II receptor blockade preserved left ventricular diastolic function. It was also potent at improving cardiomyocyte diameter and the thickening of the capillary basement membrane, increasing MMP-2 activity, and decreasing inflammatory cytokines. With all these changes, candesartan could contribute to cardioprotection in diabetes mellitus.

The stacked DCFL (direct coupled FET logic) structure makes it possible to have supply voltage compatibility to Si LSIs with IC circuit current reduction. The idea is to stack DCFL circuits by utilizing the Schottky FET characteristic, which makes the total DCFL circuit current hold constantly independent of any logic conditions. This circuit structure was applied to the divide by 64/65 or 128/129 prescalar IC, which operates at 2.5 GHz on a supply voltage of 3 V with circuit current of 9.8 mA. Virtual ground stability was investigated to apply the stacked DCFL to application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The stability of the virtual ground was confirmed by modeling the stacked DCFL circuit and simulating the circuit using SPICE. >

An input circuit configuration for very high speed digital ICs which provides good line termination without using a 50-ohm resistor is described. This is realized by featuring a source-input circuit of a common-gate FET. A resistor and capacitor network, attached to an ordinary common-gate FET circuit, can make a remarkable improvement in input resistance constancy and higher frequency gain. The technique of the source-input circuit was applied to SCFL flip-flops. T-FF and D-FF ICs were fabricated with 0.5 mu m WNx-gate BP-LDD GaAs MESFET technology, and tested. They demonstrated excellent high-frequency operations above 10 GHz. >

The left atrial (LA) appendage is the most common site of thrombus formation in patients with atrial fibrillation, and integrated backscatter allows the quantiative assessment of LA spontaneous echo contrast (SEC). Integrated backscatter was used to examine the significance of measuring appendage SEC, specifically in relation to echocardiographic variables implying thromboembolism, in patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.Fifty-two patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and no prior anticoagulant therapy (35 men, 17 women, mean age 66 +/- 7 years) underwent transesophageal echocardiography with integrated backscatter analysis. The LA and LA appendage integrated backscatter intensity were measured with the regions of interest placed in the LA cavity and the appendage, respectively. The integrated backscatter intensity values for these two chambers (corrected "LA" and "LA appendage" integrated backscatter intensity, respectively) were corrected using values from the left ventricular cavity.The LA appendage integrated backscatter intensity values were available in 44 patients (85%). Overall, the corrected LA appendage integrated backscatter intensity was significantly increased compared with the corrected LA integrated backscatter intensity (2.8 +/- 2.2 vs 2.0 +/- 1.8 dB, p0.001). The corrected LA appendage integrated backscatter intensity was inversely correlated with the LA appendage velocity (r = -0.37, p0.05), but not with the LA dimension, appendage size, or left ventricular function. The corrected appendage integrated backscatter intensity (4.5 +/- 2.3 vs 2.4 +/- 1.9 dB, p0.01) and LA integrated backscatter intensity (3.2 +/- 2.1 vs 1.7 +/- 1.7 dB, p0.05) were higher in patients who had LA appendage thrombus (n = 8) than those who did not. With the corrected appendage integrated backscatter intensity set ator = 2.5 dB, the sensitivity for the presence of appendage thrombus was 88% and the specificity was 64%.Patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation had a denser SEC in the LA appendage compared with SEC in the main LA cavity. The severity of the appendage SEC was influenced by the LA appendage function rather than its size. Quantification of SEC in the appendage, rather than main LA cavity, was more valuable for assessing embolic potential.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with secondary electron emissions is useful for the study of cardiomyocyte architecture, however, the information is limited from the cell surface. Whereas backscattered electron (BSE) emission can give a high-resolution image of the specimen's intracellular structure after heavy metal staining. In this study, we applied BSE imaging analysis to the study of the arrangement of cardiomyocytes in the myocardium. The tissue specimens from a normal fresh monkey heart, normal human heart obtained at autopsy, and surgically resected tissue from a patient with old myocardial infarction in the left ventricular aneurysmectomy were used. The tissue specimens were fixed in neutral formalin, treated with NaOH and then stained with Gomori's silver methenamine reagent followed by tannic acid and osmium tetroxide. After dehydration and drying, the specimens were coated with carbon and examined by SEM with a BSE detector. In the tissue preparations, the A bands of sarcomeres were selectively stained with silver so that the arrangements of subsarcolemmal myofibrils and the intercalated discs were clearly seen in the BSE images. In the left ventricular aneurysmal walls of old myocardial infarction, atrophied cardiomyocytes with disarray of subsarcolemmal myofibrils were observed. The results strongly suggest that BSE images are further applicable to the study of the architecture of cardiac myocytes and their branches, and the arrangement of intracellular myofibrils in various diseased myocardium.

Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) are the major energy substrate for heart and their oxidation is important for achieving maximal cardiac work. However, the mechanism of uptake of LCFA by myocardium has not been clarified. We previously reported that bovine myocardial LCFA transporter has a sequence homology to human CD36. Clinically, total defect of myocardial uptake of radiolabeled long-chain fatty acid analog [123I-BMIPP: Iodine-123 15-(p-iodophenyl)-(R,S)-methylpentadecanoic acid] has been reported in some restricted cases, but the etiology has not been clarified. In the present study, we analyzed CD36 expression and CD36 gene in subjects who showed total lack of myocardial 123I-BMIPP accumulation, and, vice versa, evaluated myocardial 123I-BMIPP uptake in subjects with CD36 deficiency. Four unrelated subjects were evaluated, Two were found to have negative myocardial LCFA accumulation by 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy, after which the expression of CD36 on their platelets and monocytes was analyzed. Remaining two subjects were identified as CD36 deficiency by screening, then 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy was performed. Expression of CD36 on platelets and monocytes was measured by flow cytometric analysis. The molecular defects responsible for CD36 deficiency was detected by allele-specific restriction enzyme analysis. CD36 expression was totally deficient in all 4 subjects on both platelets and monocytes. Two subjects were homozygous for a 478C--T mutation. One was heterozygous for the dinucleotide deletion of exon V and single nucleotide insertion of exon X, and remaining one was considered to be heterozygous for the dinucleotide deletion of exon V and an unknown gene abnormality. All cases demonstrated a completely negative accumulation of myocardial LCFA despite of normal myocardial perfusion, which was evaluated by thallium scintigraphy. In addition, all cases demonstrated apparently normal hepatic LCFA accumulation Thus, these findings suggested that CD36 acts as a major myocardial specific LCFA transporter in humans.

DBA/2 inbred mice spontaneously develop myocarditis and a unique form of subepicardial inflammation of the right ventricle characterized by a prominent eosinophilic infiltrate with calcinosis. We studied this myocarditis using light microscopy and both transmission and analytical X-ray electron microscopy, paying particular attention to eosinophil-associated cardiocyte injury. At 5 weeks of age, many eosinophils and mononuclear cells (MNCs) were seen in the subepicardium of the right ventricle. Electron microscopy showed that cardiocytes underwent degenerative changes, including myofibrillar lysis, accumulation of Z-band material and mitochondrial inclusions, and rupture of plasma membranes. The infiltrating eosinophils appeared to be activated, and cells with cytoplasmic vacuoles, suggestive of degranulation, were noted. The myocardial injury was most severe in the 7th week and healed with myocardial fibrosis and calcinosis by the 8th week. Analytical X-ray electron microscopy showed that the calcinosis was initiated in mitochondrial inclusions of injured cardiocytes. The peripheral eosinophil count did not increase during the course of the disease, but there was a positive correlation between the ratio of eosinophils to infiltrated white blood cells (Eo/WBCs) in the right ventricle and the severity of myocardial damage. Eosinophils may play a significant part in subepicardial cardiocyte injury seen in DBA/2 mice.

Myocarditis is a rare complication of influenza infection but is occasionally fatal. Recent application of percutaneous cardiopulmonary support and/or intraaortic balloon pumping to the serious case of viral myocarditis brought an good prognosis. We should recognize that the patient with viral infection such as influenza may have myocarditis and should make an early diagnosis for adequate treatment in time. To avoid misdiagnosis we must know characteristic symptoms and signs of cardiac involvement during influenza infection.

The Osaka City University Hospital was reopened in May 1993. In the Central Clinical Laboratory our Total Laboratory Automation System, a comprehensive online analyzing system, covers the entire process from collecting blood to completing tests. Our study showed that an average of 2,800 outpatients were examined per day in 1994, compared with 1,900 per day in 1992, an increase of 47.4%. The number of tests performed by the central laboratory in 1994 was 5,610,000 as compared to 3,720,000 in 1992, an increase of 50.8%. After the installation of the transport line and computerization the following can be noted: 1) We were able to extend reception hours by two hours. 2) We are now able to assign lab medical technologists to physiology analysis, emergency analysis, and initial outpatient testing. We conclude that these effects have been very large.

To elucidate the heart involvement associated with influenza virus infection, the authors studied the hearts of influenza A/PR/8/34 virus-inoculated ICR mice by light and electron microscopy, cardiac catheterization, virus assay, and indirect immunofluorescence. Light microscopy showed small necrotic foci with inflammatory cell infiltration spreading in the myocardium on days 3 to 7 and evidence of healing by day 9 after inoculation. Electron microscopy demonstrated that necrotic cell debris was phagocytosed by macrophages, and that degenerating cardiocytes, macrophages, and lymphocytes were often in close contact, suggesting immunologic interactions, and that platelet thrombi were present in some capillaries on days 3 to 5. Both systolic and diastolic functions of the left ventricle (LV) were impaired on days 3 to 9 and recovered almost to normal by day 14. The virus could be isolated from the heart on days 3 to 7. Immunofluorescent preparations showed virus antigens in the vascular walls and cardiocytes until day 7. These results suggest that the acute cardiac injury was related to cytotoxic immunologic interactions, virus-induced cytolysis and, at least in part, to ischemia due to intracapillary thrombosis. Compared with coxsackie B3 myocarditis in mice, the influenza myocarditis was mild in degree and short in duration, but the influenza infection is a most common and repetitive disease in humans. The clinical implications of this animal model with myocarditis are discussed.

In patients with acute myocarditis, arrhythmias constitute one of the crucial risk factors for morbidity and mortality. To clarify the incidences and the chronological features of arrhythmias and their correlation with the histopathology of the heart, we conducted continuous electrocardiography in an animal model of viral myocarditis, and light microscopy of the heart with special reference to the conduction system. Forty weanling C3H/He mice were divided into an inoculated group (IG) and a control group (CG), of 20 mice each. IG was injected intraperitoneally with coxsackie B3 virus and CG was injected with virus-free culture medium. Thin electrodes were implanted in their chest walls and connected with an electric impulse transmitting device so that they could move freely. ECGs were recorded continuously without anesthesia up to the 14th postinoculation day. The atrial and ventricular myocardium and the conduction system were studied by light microscopy. In CG, no arrhythmia was noted. In IG, various kinds of arrhythmias were documented. The incidences of the arrhythmia in the 20 mice were: sinus arrest 80%, second or third degree atrioventricular (AV) block 30%, premature atrial complexes 30%, premature ventricular complexes 20%, and ventricular tachycardia 10%. Arrhythmias were usually transient and recurrent, and the majority of them developed between the 6th and 13th day, when the histologic changes of the heart were greatest. There seemed to be a correlation between the kind of arrhythmias and the myocarditic lesions. Mice with sinus arrest or AV block developed histopathologic changes in the sinus node or AV conducting tissue, respectively. In the early stage of myocarditis, no inflammatory changes were apparent in the sinus node in the mice with sinus arrest.

Reliability of Ti–Pt–Au and Ti–Mo–Au systems has been investigated for GaAs integrated circuit first‐level metallizations on semi‐insulating GaAs substrates and second‐level metallizations on interlayer SiO2 films using Auger depth profile analysis, residual resistance examination and temperature storage step‐stress testing. Auger analysis and residual resistance examination showed significant reaction between first‐level Ti–Pt–Au and GaAs substrates during metallization processes, while Ti–Mo–Au system with the electron‐beam evaporated Mo film showed higher thermal stability because the Mo film acted as a good diffusion barrier between GaAs and Au. The second‐level Ti–Pt–Au on SiO2 was found to be free from the reaction with GaAs substrates, and its degradation was ascribed to interdiffusion of composite metals. Steric and substituent effects on the photochemical reaction of 2,4,6-trialkylphenyl ketones has been investigated. A striking steric effect was observed in the photoreaction of 2,4,6-trialkylbenzophenones. The more hindered the carbonyl group, the more readily photoenolization occurs resulting in intramolecular cyclization leading to benzocyclobutenol derivatives. With 2,4,6-trialkylacetophenones. such a steric effect was not observed in the cyclization and photoenolization reactions. These reactions have been interpreted in terms of the excited state nature responsible for these reactions.
