Vinyl esters are increasingly being used as the matrix polymer in fibre-reinforced composites for demanding large applications which experience long-term exposure to moist and wet conditions. This paper presents the results of a study of ageing due to moisture absorption in vinyl ester polymer and glass fibre–vinyl ester laminates. The moisture uptake kinetics of the two neat VE polymers, cured at different conditions, and their glass-reinforced composites has been characterised by gravimetric methods. These studies have been carried out using submersion in water at 23 °C and 50 °C and exposure to high relative humidity moisture conditions at room temperature. A dynamic mechanical analysis characterisation of the glass transition temperatures of both the aged matrix and the composite is also presented.

ABSTRACTWe present the 1:8000 scale geological map of the northeastern sector of Mykonos Island, where an igneous, metamorphic and siliciclastic sequence is cut by the North Cycladic Detachment System (NCDS), and brittly-ductily deformed during the emplacement of the Mykonos Granite. We describe the architecture of the (ductile) Livada and (brittle) Mykonos Detachments pertaining to the NCDS. Geological mapping was functional to (i) the description of along and across strike geometrical variations of the detachments and (ii) the analysis of the deformation and strain partitioning within the deformed rocks. We show that deformation localisation differs along dip and strike for the Mykonos Detachment, which accommodated deformation both through thick and localised fault zones. Also, the ductile fabric of the Livada Detachment is characterised by a strong strain localisation, which generally decreases from eastwards. Moreover, the geological map shows that the detachments orientation allowed the local elision of the original tectono-stratigraphy.

New, detailed geological/structural mapping and field-based structural analysis were carried out to investigate the deformation pattern of well-preserved high-pressure rocks of the Blueschist Unit exposed in SE Syros (Cyclades, Greece). Geological mapping revealed the occurrence of extensive alternations between different rock groups, as well as interfingering patterns in map-scale that are possibly the result of folding. The earlier ductile deformation phase recognized in the mapped area is associated with the development of a penetrative foliation, which was formed at eclogite/blueschist-facies conditions under peak metamorphism. The subsequent main deformation phase occurred under blueschist facies conditions synchronous with the early stages of exhumation of the high-pressure rocks. This phase is mainly associated with the formation of WNW-trending folds and a pervasive axial planar foliation linked with ESE-directed shearing. The main deformation ceased under blueschist-facies conditions, and exhumation of the rocks to greenschist-facies conditions took place under very weak and localized deformation. Greenschist retrogression observed in the southwestern part of the mapped area seems to be controlled by fluids, rather than by intense deformation and formation of major syn-greenschist shear zones.

Biowaste management is at the center of attention in recent years due to the increased focus on Circular Economy practices. Lesvos has numerous food processing facilities and olive mills, and therefore Olive Mill Wastewater (OMWW) is a wastewater stream that requires attention. In this study, a holistic experimental set-up that combines aerobic and anaerobic treatment strategies was developed taking into consideration the hydrothermal carbonization of AD digestate along with locally available OMWW. The study focuses on the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of anaerobic residues from biogas production, and food waste was co-utilized with spent coffee grounds (SCG). The reduced volatile solids of SCG have some effects on the final products. AD produced methane yields of 54.7% for the food waste and 52.4%. for the feedstock with added SCG. At the same time, the feedstock that contained SCG produced more hydrochar that reached up to 50% of the yield. Hydrothermal carbonization in a water medium produced liquids with basic pH values around 8 and conductivities of 4–5 mS/cm, while the samples that were treated in OMWW medium had pH values close to 5.5 and conductivities of around 12 mS/cm. The produced hydrochars have significant calorific values that exceeded 20 MJ/kg for almost all the samples. Overall, HTC with OMWW as a medium was able significantly reduce the COD of OMWW while resulting in hydrochars with increased heating values.

BackgroundThe aim of the current investigation was to explore the association of food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) with the maternal diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding in Greek infants.MethodsA multicenter retrospective case-control study was conducted in 6 regions in Greece, with 96 mothers of infants with and 141 mothers of infants without a history of FPIAP. Maternal dietary habits during pregnancy and breastfeeding were evaluated with the following validated questionnaires: (a) The Mediterranean Diet Score and (b) The Mediterranean Oriented Culture-Specific Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire.ResultsFPIAP was associated with cow's milk (83.6%), egg (7.3%), wheat (6.4%), and beef (6.4%) in the maternal diet. Adherence to Mediterranean Diet was similar among the mothers. Mothers of FPIAP infants consumed more vegetables. Elastic net prediction models showed that, in this Mediterranean population, increased consumption during pregnancy and lactation of common allergens, whole grain products, homemade food, fish and shellfish, and fruits was associated with a decreased risk of FPIAP. Conversely, a high intake of vegetables, sugar and total fat, and non-stick/grilled cooking, were associated with increased risk of FPIAP, as was a high intake of salt and white flour during lactation only.ConclusionsComponents of a maternal Mediterranean Diet may protect against FPIAP when traditional cooking methods are adopted and fish, fruit, and whole wheat products are consumed frequently during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The use of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites in load-carrying constructions has significantly increased over the last few decades. Such GFRP composite structures may undergo significant changes in performance as a consequence of long-term environmental exposure. Vinyl ester (VE) resins are a class of thermosetting polymers increasingly being used in such structural composites. This increasing use of VE-based GFRPs in such applications has led to an increasing need to better understand the consequences of long-term environmental exposure on their performance. The reliable validation of the environmental durability of new VE-based GFRPs can be a time- and resource-consuming process involving costly testing programs. Accelerated hydrothermal ageing is often used in these investigations. This paper reviews the relevant literature on the hydrothermal ageing of vinyl ester-based GFRP with special attention to the fundamental background of moisture-induced ageing of GFRP, the important role of voids, and the fibre-matrix interface, on composite mechanical performance.

It is recognized that gait analysis is a powerful tool used to capture human locomotion and quantify the related parameters. PODOSmart® insoles have been designed to provide accurate measurements for gait analysis. PODOSmart® insoles are lightweight, slim and cost-effective. A recent publication presented the characteristics and data concerning the validity of PODOSmart® insoles in gait analysis. In literature, there is still no evidence about the repeatability of PODOSmart® gait analysis system. Such evidence is essential in order to use this device in both research and clinical settings. The aim of the present study was to assess the repeatability of PODOSmart® system. In this context, it was hypothesized that the parameters of gait analysis captured by PODOSmart® would be repeatable. In a sample consisting of 22 healthy male adults, participants performed two walking trials on a six-meter walkway. The ICC values for 28 gait variables provided by PODOSmart® indicated good to excellent test-retest reliability, ranging from 0.802 to 0.997. The present findings confirm that PODOSmart® gait analysis insoles present excellent repeatability in gait analysis parameters. These results offer additional evidence regarding the reliability of this gait analysis tool.

The new smart insole PODOSmart®, is introduced as a new tool for gait analysis against high cost laboratory based equipment. PODOSmart® system measures walking profile and gait variables in real life conditions. PODOSmart® insoles consists of wireless sensors, can be fitted into any shoe and offer the ability to measure spatial, temporal, and kinematic gait parameters. The intelligent insoles feature several sensors that detect and capture foot movements and a microprocessor that calculates gait related biomechanical data. Gait analysis results are presented in PODOSmart® platform. This study aims to present the characteristics of this tool and to validate it comparing with a stereophotogrammetry-based system. Validation was performed by gait analysis for eleven healthy individuals on a six-meters walkway using both PODOSmart® and Vicon system. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated for gait parameters. ICC for the validation ranged from 0.313 to 0.990 in gait parameters. The highest ICC was observed in cadence, circumduction, walking speed, stride length and stride duration. PODOSmart® is a valid tool for gait analysis compared to the gold standard Vicon. As PODOSmart®, is a portable gait analysis tool with an affordable cost it can be a useful novel tool for gait analysis in healthy and pathological population.

Combined kinematic, structural and palaeostress (calcite twinning, fault-slip data) analyses are used to study the exhumation mechanism of the high-pressure rocks exposed on the island of Crete (southern Aegean, Greece). Our study shows that the evolution of windows in central Crete was controlled by two main contractional phases of deformation. The first phase ([D.sub.1]) was related to the ductile-stage of exhumation. NNW-SSE compression during [D.sub.1] caused layer- and transport-parallel shortening in the upper thrust sheets, resulting in nappe stacking via low-angle thrusting. Synchronously, intracontinental subduction led to high-pressure metamorphism which, however, did not affect the most external parts of the southern Hellenides. Subsequent upward ductile extrusion of high-pressure rocks was characterized by both down-section increase of strain and up-section increase of the pure shear component. The second phase ([D.sub.2]) was associated with the brittle-stage of exhumation. [D.sub.2] was governed by NNE-SSW compression and involved conspicuous thrust-related folding, considerable tectonic imbrication and formation of a Middle Miocene basin. The major [D.sub.2]-related Psiloritis Thrust cross-cuts the entire nappe pile, and its trajectory partially follows and reworks the [D.sub.1]-related contact between upper and lower (high-pressure) tectonic units. Eduction and doming of the Talea Window was accompanied by gravity sliding of the upper thrust sheets and by out-of-the-syncline thrusting. Late-orogenic collapse also contributed to the exhumation process. Therefore, it seems that the high-pressure rocks of central Crete were exhumed under continuous compression and that the role of extension was previously overestimated. U-Pb zircon dating of three granitic orihogneisses, sampled from Kithira island, SW Greece, provide the first reliable evidence for Carboniferous plutonism within the pre-Alpine basement of the External Hellenides. Concordant zircons from two samples yielded ages at 324 [+ or -] 2 Ma and 323 [+ or -] 3 Ma, whereas the third sample yielded a lower intercept age at 320 [+ or -] 1.2 Ma. The concordant ages are interpreted to date the emplacement of the igneous protolith. Ages of inherited zircons of two orthogneisses range from 2.5 to 2.4 Ga, indicating Late Archaean-Early Proterozoic crustal components. In combination with published ages for other Aegean metagranitoids, the new U-Pb ages provide additional evidence of a temporally restricted period of plutonism in the pre-Alpine Aegean region from 325 to 300 Ma. Comparing the post-Neoproterozoic evolution of the investigated basement with that of the Cycladic and Pelagonian basements and of the continental massifs of NE Greece and Turkey, we argue that all these crustal blocks were part of the Gondwana-derived Cimmerian terrane. Based on the spatial and temporal distribution of Late Carboniferous Aegean plutonism, we suggest that this period of magmatic events results from the southward subduction of Palaeotethys beneath the marginal fragments of northern Gondwana.

Combined shear-sense criteria, finite-strain data and vorticity analyses were used to study the deformation path in a curved crustal-scale shear zone (Phyllite-Quartzite Series) of the southwestern Hellenides. The results are combined with data on the structural evolution of a cover nappe (Pindos thrust belt) to provide new insights into the orogenic evolution of this region. Ductile deformation within the Phyllite-Quartzite Series was associated with a top-to-the-west-southwest shearing and was partitioned into two structural domains: a root zone and a frontal domain. The root zone is characterized by vertical coaxial stretching, high strain and upward movement of the material, while the frontal domain comprises simple-shear deformation at the base and pure shear at the top. This pattern suggests superposition of pure shear on simple-shear deformation, and implies tectonic extrusion of the material from the root zone. The initiation of brittle deformation in the Pindos thrust belt was associated with westward translation above the sub-horizontal Pindos Thrust. Later, as the mountain range elevated, normal faulting at high altitudes and migration of thrusting to the west occurred, while east-directed folding and thrusting in the belt started to the east. According to the proposed model, crustal thickening was taking place throughout the Oligocene and early Miocene, including the subduction of the Apulian beneath the Pelagonian microcontinent and the intracontinental subduction of the Phyllite-Quartzite Series. During the lower Miocene, vertical buoyancy forces led to the successive steepening of the shear zone and the simultaneous duplexing of its basement, facilitating tectonic extrusion of the material from its root zone. Finally, an indentation process caused vertical expulsion of the orogenic wedge and gravity collapse in the brittle crust.
