A precise modulation of heterogeneous catalysts in structural and surface properties promises the development of more sustainable advanced oxidation water purification technologies. However, while catalysts with superior decontamination activity and selectivity are already achievable, maintaining a long-term service life of such materials remains challenging. Here, we propose a crystallinity engineering strategy to break the activity–stability tradeoff of metal oxides in Fenton-like catalysis. The amorphous/crystalline cobalt-manganese spinel oxide (A/C-CoMnO x ) provided highly active, hydroxyl group-rich surface, with moderate peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-binding affinity and charge transfer energy and strong pollutant adsorption, to trigger concerted radical and nonradical reactions for efficient pollutant mineralization, thereby alleviating the catalyst passivation by oxidation intermediate accumulation. Meanwhile, the surface-confined reactions, benefited from the enhanced adsorption of pollutants at A/C interface, rendered the A/C-CoMnO x /PMS system ultrahigh PMS utilization efficiency (82.2%) and unprecedented decontamination activity (rate constant of 1.48 min −1 ) surpassing almost all the state-of-the-art heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. The superior cyclic stability and environmental robustness of the system for real water treatment was also demonstrated. Our work unveils a critical role of material crystallinity in modulating the Fenton-like catalytic activity and pathways of metal oxides, which fundamentally improves our understanding of the structure–activity–selectivity relationships of heterogeneous catalysts and may inspire material design for more sustainable water purification application and beyond.

Supported single-atom catalysts (SACs), with the extremely homogenized active sites could achieve high hydrogenation selectivity toward one of the functional groups coexisting in the reactant molecule. However, as to the target group, the control of selective recognition and activation by SACs still remains a challenge. The interaction of inhibitory receptors with self–MHC class I (MHC-I) molecules is responsible for NK cell education. The intensity of DNAM-1 expression correlates with NK cell education. However, whether DNAM-1 expression directly influences the functional competence of NK cells via the KIR/MHC-I interaction remains unclear. Based on allogeneic haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, we investigated the intensity of DNAM-1 expression on reconstituted NK cells via the interaction of KIR with both donor HLA and recipient HLA at days 30, 90, and 180 after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The reconstituted NK cells educated by donor and recipient HLA molecules showed the highest DNAM-1 expression, whereas DNAM-1 expression on educated NK cells with only recipient HLA molecules was higher than that on educated NK cells with only donor HLA molecules, indicating that NK cells with donor or recipient HLA molecules regulate DNAM-1 expression and thereby affect NK cell education. Additionally, the effects of recipient cells on NK cell education were greater than those of donor cells. However, only when the DNAM-1, NKP30, and NKG2D receptors were blocked simultaneously was the function of educated and uneducated NK cells similar. Therefore, activating receptors may collaborate with DNAM-1 to induce educated NK cell hyperresponsiveness. Our data, based on in vitro and in vivo studies, demonstrate that the functional competence of NK cells via the KIR/MHC-I interaction correlates with DNAM-1 expression in human NK cells.

To explore the color value changes after processing and further explore the correlations between color values and internal components, we established a rapid evaluation method for the quality of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle. In this study, the color values of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle were digitized by a spectrophotometer, and the standard ranges of color values of the two herbal medicines were established. Further, a discriminant analysis model was established to quickly and accurately distinguish the two herbal medicines. The content of 9 flavonoids and 1 triterpene in Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle were determined by HPLC, and Pearson correlation analysis was adopted to analyze the correlations between the color values and the content of 10 components. The standard ranges of L~*, a~*, and b~* values were 65.539 6-68.305 8, 7.296 3-8.467 3, and 29.998 8-32.212 8 for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and 43.654 3-47.166 4, 14.050 0-15.133 8, and 16.424 6-20.984 8 for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, respectively. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma had higher L~* and b~* values and lower a~* value than Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, which indicated that processing with honey decreased the white and yellow values and increased the red value. The original and cross validation of the established discriminant analysis model met the requirements, and the external validation of the model showed the prediction accuracy of 100%. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the a~* value was positively correlated with the content of liquiritin apioside and isoliquiritin apioside(Plt;0.05), while the L~* and b~* values were negatively correlated with the content of the above two components(Plt;0.05). After processing with honey, L~* and b~* decreased while a~* increased, and the content of liquiritin apioside and isoliquiritin apioside increased, which was consistent with the content determination results. This study reveals the regularity of the color values of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma after processing with honey roasting, as well as the correlations between color values and component content, which provides a basis for the rapid quality evaluation of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle.

Natural killer (NK) cells exert anti-viral effects after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The balance between inhibition and activation of NK cells determined by the inherited repertoire of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) genes may influence Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation after transplantation. To evaluate the relative contributions of KIR genotypes to EBV reactivation, we prospectively enrolled 300 patients with malignant haematological disease who were suitable for haploidentical HSCT. Univariate analysis showed that donors with KIR2DS1, KIR2DS3 or KIR3DS1 genes were associated with an increased risk of EBV reactivation [hazard ratio (HR) 1·86, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·19-2·9, P = 0·0067; HR 1·78, 95% CI 1·07-2·97, P = 0·027; HR 1·86, 95% CI 1·19-2·91, P = 0·0065 respectively]. Multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of KIR2DS1, KIR2DS3 or KIR3DS1 genes was associated with increased EBV reactivation after HSCT. This effect was more evident in the absence of the cognate ligands for the corresponding activating receptors. Our present data firstly showed that donors with activating KIR genes, specifically activating KIR2DS1, KIR2DS3 and KIR3DS1, had an increased risk of EBV reactivation. Precaution for patients whose donors carry activating genes will help prevent EBV reactivation and improve patient prognosis after HSCT.

A method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometry(UHPLC-QTRAP-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 33 active constituents, including flavonoids, organic acids, nucleosides, and amino acids in Taxilli Herba to analyze and evaluate the dynamic accumulation of their multiple active constituents. The separation was performed at 30 ℃ on an XBridge~® C_(18) column(4.6 mm×100 mm, 3.5 μm) with gradient elution using 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution-methanol as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.5 mL·min~(-1), and the injection volume was 2 μL. The constituents were ionized in the electrospray ionization source(ESI) and quantitated by the multiple reaction monitoring(MRM) mode. The entropy weight TOPSIS method was used to objectively assign weights to the target constituents and rank them according to their relative closeness coefficient(C_i) to construct a multi-index comprehensive evaluation model of Taxilli Herba. The results showed that the concentrations and peak areas of 33 target constituents had good linearity in their respective linear ranges, and the correlation coefficients(r) were not less than 0.999 0. The RSD of precision, reproducibility, and stability were not higher than 4.7%. The average recoveries were 98.03%-101.3% with RSD less than 4.0%. There were differences in the content of 33 active constituents in Taxilli Herba at different harvest periods. The overall quality of Taxilli Herba harvested from mid-February to early March was better, which was consistent with the traditional harvest period. This study provides basic information for revealing the rule of dynamic accumulation of multiple active constituents in Taxilli Herba and determining the suitable harvesting period. Meanwhile, it also provides a new methodological reference for the comprehensive evaluation of the intrinsic quality of Taxilli Herba.

The FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 satellites were launched in 2019, which can provide considerably larger amounts of radio occultation (RO) observations than the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellites. The radio signals emitted from the global navigation satellites system (GNSS) are received by these low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide the so-called bending angle accounting for bending of the rays after penetrating through the atmosphere. Deeper RO observations can be retrieved from FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 for use in RO data assimilation to improve forecasts of tropical cyclones. This study used the global model FV3GFS with the finest grid resolution of about 25 km to simulate five selected typhoons over the western North Pacific, including Hagibis in 2019, Maysak and Haishen in 2020, and Kompasu and Rai in 2021. For each case, two experiments were conducted with and without assimilating FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 RO bending angle. The RO data were assimilated by the GSI 4DEnVar data assimilation system for a total period of 4 days (with 6 h assimilation window) before the typhoon genesis time, followed by a forecast length of 120 h. The RO data assimilation improved the typhoon track forecasts on average of 42 runs. However, no significantly positive impacts, in general, were found on the typhoon intensity forecasts, except for Maysak. Analyses for Maysak attributed the improved intensity forecast mainly to the improved analyses for wind, temperature, and moisture in the mid-upper troposphere after data assimilation. Consequently, the RO data largely enhanced the evolving intensity of the typhoon at a more consistent movement as explained by the wavenumber-one vorticity budget analysis. On the other hand, a noted improvement on the wind analysis, but still with degraded temperature analysis above the boundary layer, also improved track forecast at some specific times for Hagibis. The predictability of typhoon track and intensity as marginally improved by use of the large RO data remains very challenging to be well explored.

Developing highly stable and efficient catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction is of great importance for the long-term operation in proton exchange membrane fuel cells but still challenging. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of two-dimensional coplanar Pt-carbon nanomeshes (NMs) that are composed of highly distorted Pt networks (neck width of 2.05 ± 0.72 nm) and carbon. X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy demonstrated metallic state of Pt in the coplanar Pt/C NMs. Fuel cell tests verified the excellent activity of the coplanar Pt/C NM catalyst with the peak power density of 1.21 W cm -2 and current density of 0.360 A cm -2 at 0.80 V in H 2 /O 2 cell. Moreover, the coplanar Pt/C NM electrocatalysts showed superior stability against aggregation with nanomesh structures preserved intact in a long-term operation over 30,000 cycles for electrode measurement, and the working voltage loss was negligible after 120 h in H 2 /O 2 single cell operation. Density functional theory analysis indicates the increased vacancy formation energy of Pt atoms for coplanar Pt/C NMs, restraining the tendency of Pt dissolution and aggregation.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world due to the high incidence of the diseases coupled with the limited therapeutic options. In recent years, advances in regenerative medicine have emerged as a promising treatment. Differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into cardiac cells and emerging technologies allowing arrangement of cells into complex 3D tissue-like structures open new frontiers for transplantation and engraftment of these tissue patches onto the damaged heart. Despite the cells integrating and presenting initial neovascularization, the functional and electric properties of these patches are still not comparable with those of the host cardiac tissue. Future research optimizing maturation and integration of the iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes is paramount for cardiac cell therapy to attain clinical use. Herein, we will review the state of the art and the different approaches to constructing these 3D transplantable structures.

Summary Here, we develop a freestanding ladder-like ZnO surface with abundant unsaturated step defects, which could efficiently anchor Au1 sites with one-dimensional assembling for the ultrasensitive NO2 detection. The dimension of the obtained ZnO hexagonal ladder could be precisely controlled through reasonably regularizing the nucleation and growth rate. Following a layer-by-layer growth mode, the obtained ZnO would adopt the step-rich evolution. These ladder-like structures could provide abundant unsaturated step defects along with their curved edge profiles to serve as susceptible centers to site-selectively immobilize isolated Au1 species (Au1-ZnO). The obtained Au1-ZnO catalysts exhibit an outstanding NO2-sensing response (12.6 to 300 ppb) at a low operating temperature (150°C). The proposed step-induced strategy will broaden the rational design of special site-trapped supported metal catalysis for gas sensors.

Herein, we report a negative pressure pyrolysis to access dense single metal sites (Co, Fe, Ni etc.) with high accessibility dispersed on three-dimensional (3D) graphene frameworks (GFs), during which the differential pressure between inside and outside of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promotes the cleavage of the derived carbon layers and gradual expansion of mesopores. In situ transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller tests reveal that the formed 3D GFs possess an enhanced mesoporosity and external surface area, which greatly favor the mass transport and utilization of metal sites. This contributes to an excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (half-wave potential of 0.901 V vs. RHE). Theoretical calculations verify that selective carbon cleavage near Co centers can efficiently lower the overall ORR theoretical overpotential in comparison with intact atomic configuration.

Two-dimensional noble metal nanomaterials(2D NMNs) are widely used as electrocatalyst. In recent years, the researchers have focused on the synthesis of 2D NMNs at the atomic scale, and realize the improvement of electrocatalytic performance through further structural modification to reduce the usage of noble metals. Herein, we systematically introduce the synthesis methods of 2D NMNs categorized by element type. Subsequently, the catalytic applications toward a variety of electrocatalytic reactions are described in detail including the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER), oxygen reduction reaction(ORR), oxygen evolution reaction(OER) and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Finally, the potential opportunities and remaining challenges in this emerging research area are proposed.

Biomaterials dominate the field of cardiovascular therapeutics, a multitude of which have been used to repair and replace injured heart tissue. This field has evolved beyond the simple selection of compatible materials and now focuses on the rational design of controlled structures that integrate with the cardiovascular system. However, the compatibility of these materials with the blood presents a major limitation to their clinical application. In this context, surface modification strategies can enhance blood compatibility and several recent advances in this area have emerged. This review summarizes the recent applications of biomaterials in cardiovascular therapies, the improvements in their biocompatibility and the surface modification technologies that have the potential to improve clinical outcomes.
