Abstract

Failure rate is an important reliability index of mechanical components. Failure rate is usually used to characterize the degradation rule of material performance under the cyclic load, which is critical to fatigue life prediction as well as reliability assessment of Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–6Mo (Ti-6246) alloy. In order to reveal the probability characteristics of failure rate of Ti-6246 alloy under uncertain cyclic load, the equation of P-S-N curve is studied in this paper. Firstly. The probability density function for fatigue life under uncertain cyclic loading is derived from the probability density function for external stresses. A probabilistic model for the failure rate is then presented based on the basic assumptions. It is assumed that the failure rate and fatigue life of the material depend on the same damage state. Finally, the validity of the proposed model is verified by the Ti-6246 alloy fatigue test. The results show that the fatigue life of Ti-6246 alloy is more affected by material parameters (internal factors) than stress (external factors) under uncertain constant amplitude cyclic loading.

6. A residual life prediction model based on the generalized σ -N curved surface

Abstract

In order to investigate change rule of the residual life of structure under random repeated load, firstly, starting from the statistic meaning of random repeated load, the joint probability density function of maximum stress and minimum stress is derived based on the characteristics of order statistic (maximum order statistic and minimum order statistic); then, based on the equation of generalized σ -N curved surface, considering the influence of load cycles number on fatigue life, a relationship among minimum stress, maximum stress and residual life, that is the σmin(n)- σmax(n)-Nr(n) curved surface model, is established; finally, the validity of the proposed model is demonstrated by a practical case. The result shows that the proposed model can reflect the influence of maximum stress and minimum stress on residual life of structure under random repeated load, which can provide a theoretical basis for life prediction and reliability assessment of structure.

9. Intelligent fault diagnosis method for rolling bearing using WMNRS and LSSVM

Abstract

A weighted multi-neighborhood rough set (WMNRS) algorithm is designed to resolve the issue in which the neighborhood radius must be adjusted iteratively and cannot be automatically determined in the neighborhood rough set. This algorithm combined with the least squares support vector machines (LSSVM) is used for analyzing rolling bearing condition monitoring data; consequently, an intelligent fault diagnosis method is proposed. Specifically, the time-domain and frequency-domain features are extracted from the collected vibration signals to construct an original feature set. The WMNRS algorithm is then applied to screen the primary sensitive components from the constructed feature set. Finally, an optimized LSSVM is utilized to recognize the fault types. The developed method is validated on a public dataset and a measured rolling bearing dataset. The results demonstrate that the method achieves excellent diagnostic performance. Furthermore, the proposed method has some supremacy regarding running time.

Abstract

Fatigue life models are widely used to predict the fatigue behavior at arbitrary cycle counts of composite structures subjected to cyclic or highly dynamic loads. However, their predictive capacity and determination of model parameters are strongly dependent on loading conditions and large experimental efforts. This research aims to develop a new model which uses a single model parameter to predict the variation trend and distribution pattern of fatigue experimental data points subjected to different stress ratios, loading frequencies and fiber orientations. Validation of the model with several sets of experimental data shows that the proposed model is capable of adequately considering the effects of stress ratio, loading frequency and fiber orientation on the fatigue behavior of composite materials and correctly predicting the variation trend of the experimental data points using only one set of model parameters regardless of stress ratios, loading frequencies and fiber orientations.
