Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematological malignancy. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant RNA modification. YTH domain-containing family protein 2 (YTHDF2) recognizes m6A-cotaining RNAs and accelerates degradation to regulate cancer progression. However, the role of YTHDF2 in MM remains unclear. We investigated the expression levels and prognostic role of YTHDF2 in MM, and studied the effect of YTHDF2 on MM proliferation and cell cycle. The results showed that YTHDF2 was highly expressed in MM and was an independent prognostic factor for MM survival. Silencing YTHDF2 suppressed cell proliferation and caused the G1/S phase cell cycle arrest. RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and m6A-RIP (MeRIP) revealed that YTHDF2 accelerated EGR1 mRNA degradation in an m6A-dependent manner. Moreover, overexpression of YTHDF2 promoted MM growth via the m6A-dependent degradation of EGR1 both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, EGR1 suppressed cell proliferation and retarded cell cycle by activating p21cip1/waf1 transcription and inhibiting CDK2-cyclinE1. EGR1 knockdown could reverse the inhibited proliferation and cell cycle arrest upon YTHDF2 knockdown. In conclusion, the high expression of YTHDF2 promoted MM cell proliferation via EGR1/p21cip1/waf1/CDK2-cyclin E1 axis-mediated cell cycle transition, highlighting the potential of YTHDF2 as an effective prognostic biomarker and a promising therapeutic target for MM.

Fluorescent patterns with multiple functions enable high-security anti-counterfeiting labels. Complex material synthesis and patterning processes limit the application of multifunctional fluorescent patterns, so the technology of in situ fluorescent patterning with tunable multimodal capabilities is becoming more necessary. In this work, an in situ fluorescent patterning technology was developed using laser direct writing on solid cellulose film at ambient conditions without masks. The fluorescent intensity and surface microstructure of the patterns could be adjusted by programmable varying of the laser parameters simultaneously. During laser direct writing, carbon dots are generated in situ in a cellulose ester polymer matrix, which significantly simplifies the fluorescent patterning process and reduces the manufacturing cost. Interestingly, the tunable fluorescent intensity empowers the fabrication of visual stereoscopic fluorescent patterns with excitation dependence, further improving its anti-counterfeiting performance. The obtained fluorescent patterns still show ultrahigh optical properties after being immersed in an acid/base solution (pH 5-12) over one month. In addition, the anti-UV performance of the obtained laser-patterned film with transmittance around 90% is comparable to that of commercial UV-resistant films. This work provided an advanced and feasible approach to fabricating programmable, performance-tunable, subtle fluorescent patterns in large-scale for industrial application.

Nanostructure-induced structural coloration and bio-invisibility are important for camouflaging as it displays color and can be tuned and imparted in a more environmentally friendly manner. However, even though many new camouflage fabrics and technologies are invented, there is a lack of numerical electromagnetic and optical approaches to analyze the phenomenon of light scattering of camouflaging materials from nanostructures. In this study, we built and presented a successful simulation of physical coloration caused by multilayer membrane interference. We created this model based on surfactant-like cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) that tightly stacked into photon-active microstructure and surface topology for light reflection, thus affecting the film gloss. Incident light coming at a defined wavelength or angle was studied. The effects of film height, high microstructure, and curvature on the optical properties of ITO/PET substrates were investigated. These showed the coloration is highly dependent on the nanostructure’s characteristics. This study provides a general prediction model to deal with optical multilayer systems where interference plays a vital role in optical camouflaging, etc.

As a biodegradable green dielectric material, cellulose has been used in wearable electronic devices, sensors, film capacitors, and other electronic devices. Cellulose-based dielectric has the advantages of renewable, non-toxic, flexible, and strong mechanical properties, so it of is great significance to study the dielectric properties of cellulose. In this paper, we summarized the factors influencing the dielectric properties of cellulose-based dielectric and the ways to change the dielectric properties, mainly explored the methods to improve the dielectric constant of nanocellulose-based dielectric materials. This review summarizes the current state-of-art progress of new dielectric materials, the application of cellulose in electronic devices, the development of green energy storage materials and etc.

Author(s): Xu, X; Zhou, H; Zhou, G; Hsieh, YL | Abstract: Self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) to form structural colors offers promising opportunities for developing electronic, optoelectronic, and magnetic devices. In this regard, we reported co-assembly of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and graphene to produce colored thin films. We demonstrated that biomimetic iridescent "peacock feather"-like full-color thin films can be generated by simple evaporation of aqueous suspensions on a surface tension confined, optically symmetric indium tin oxide-coated polyethylene terephthalate substrate. Amphiphilic CNFs serve dual functions to attract hydrophobic graphene via van der Waals interactions and to disperse hydrophilically and anionically CNF-tethered graphene while regulating surface tension to induce capillary and Marangoni flows in the force fields and construct thickness variation during dewetting. These CNF-graphene thin films exhibit full-color patterns and function as tunable light and moisture actuators. This approach has high potential to be applied to assemble other metal or metal oxide NPs for fast, simple, and robust fabrication without involving any complex lithography and external fields.

Nanocellulose, typically cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), has excellent properties and is widely used. In particular, CNC has a small dimension, high chemical reactivity, and high sustainability, which makes it an excellent candidate as a starting material to be converted into nanocellulose derivatives. Chemical modification is essential for obtaining the desired products; the modifications create different functional attachment levels and generate novel microstructures. Recent advances on nanocellulose derivatives have not yet been reviewed and evaluated for the last five years. Nanocellulose derivative materials are being used in a wide variety of high-quality functional applications. To meet these requirements, it is essential for researchers to fully understand CNCs and derivative materials, precisely their characteristics, synthesis methods, and chemical modification approaches. This paper discusses CNC and its derivatives concerning the structural characteristics, performance, and synthesis methods, comparing the pros and cons of these chemical modification approaches reported in recent years. This review also discusses the critical physicochemical properties of CNC derivative products, including solubility, wetting performance, and associated impacts on properties. Lastly, this paper also comments on the bottlenecks of nanocellulose derivatives in various applications and briefly discusses their future research direction.

Forkhead box O1 (FoxO1) has a crucial role in the early B cell development. To understand the functional importance of FoxO1 gene in the early B cell expansion, we established a FoxO1 knockdown model using 70Z/3 pre-B cell line. The FoxO1 knockdown 70Z/3 cells (70Z/3-KD cells) showed the down-regulated expression of interleukin 7 receptor α chain (IL-7Rα). Moreover, the signaling via IL-7Rα was significantly attenuated in the 70Z/3-KD cells, and this alteration was fully rescued by re-expression of FoxO1 gene. Compared to the mock cells, loss of FoxO1 reduced the growth rates in the 70Z/3-KD cells, and was fully rescued by reintroduction of FoxO1 gene. The expansion of pre-B cells (CD45R+CD43- fraction) was also reduced by the knockdown of FoxO1 gene. Indeed, FoxO1 induces accumulation in the p27-mediated G0/G1 phase arrest in 70Z/3 cells. FoxO1 bound to the Il7ra locus specifically and regulate the IL-7Rα transcription. In conclusion, FoxO1 regulates the expansion of pre-B cells by regulating the expression of IL-7Rα and its signal transduction.

Cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is a nanoscale colloid with superior potential for coatings, liquid crystal displays, and optoelectronics. However, to date, the presence of hydrophilicity still limits its application. Multifunction via graft copolymerization modification of CNC appears to be breaking into a new direction. In this study, we used the residual hydroxyl groups on the CNC to react with 2-bromoisobu-tyryl bromide, and the initiator was therefore anchored on the CNC surface. Through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), CNC was successfully grafted to azobenzene monomer, i.e., 9-[4-[2-[4-(trifluorometh) phenyl] diazenyl] phenoxy] nonayl acrylate (FAZO). After a series of characterization methods, such as FTIR, NMR and XRD, it was found that the surface water contact angle of the CNC-PFAZO prepared by the modification was as high as 134.4°, and the high hydrophilicity of this material could be maintained for up to one month, even longer.

Background: The effects of various surgical options and ulcerations on the survival of patients with stage IV skin malignant melanoma are unknown. Therefore, we evaluated the potential of these factors as prognostic markers in patients with stage IV malignant melanoma. Methods: We included 5760 patients from 2004–2015 who are screened from the SEER datasets in the study. The patients were divided into four groups: the R 0 group, the primary tumor resection group, the metastasectomy group, and the no-resection group. The median follow-up survival time and overall survival were compared between the four groups as primary outcomes. Result: The R0 , primary tumor resection, metastasectomy, and no-resection groups had median survival times of 11, 13, 20, and 4 months, respectively ( p Conclusion: We highlight the importance of surgery in metastatic melanoma; each surgical group in this study is independently correlated with increased survival. In addition, the patient’s ulceration status is able to predict surgical treatment; however, in the ulcerated melanoma cases, caution should be exercised when considering a metastasectomy.

Halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are promising materials for diverse applications including displays, light‐emitting diodes, and solar cells due to their intriguing properties such as tunable bandgap, high photoluminescence quantum yield, high absorbance, and narrow emission peaks. Despite the prosperous achievements over the past several years, PQDs face severe challenges in terms of stability under different circumstances. Currently, researchers have overcome part of the stability problem, making PQDs sustainable in water, oxygen, and polar solvents for long‐term use. However, halide PQDs are easily degraded under continuous irradiation, which significantly limits their potential for conventional applications. In this study, an oleic acid/oleylamine (traditional surface ligands)‐free method to fabricate perovskite quantum dot papers (PQDP) is developed by adding cellulose nanocrystals as long‐chain binding ligands that stabilize the PQD structure. As a result, the relative photoluminescence intensity of PQDP remains over ≈90% under continuous ultraviolet (UV, 16 W) irradiation for 2 months, showing negligible photodegradation. This proposed method paves the way for the fabrication of ultrastable PQDs and the future development of related applications., Solid‐state perovskite quantum dot papers are fabricated using a unique vacuum filtration growth method without a purification process. The bonding between cellulose nanocrystals and perovskite quantum dots makes the hybrid structure stable, and record high UV stability and thermal stability are achieved for perovskite quantum dot papers.

Graphene is a promising material for diverse applications, such as in composites, optoelectronics, photovoltaic cells, and energy storage devices. However, high-yielding liquid exfoliation of good-quality graphene in high concentrations remains a challenge. In this study, amphiphilic 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were demonstrated in robust aqueous exfoliation of graphite into high quality graphene in high yields and stable dispersions with graphene concentration up to 1 mg mL-1. Over 50% of graphene flakes exfoliated were 3 layers or less, of which ca. 5% were monolayer, and another 47% were multilayers, leaving only 3% as un-exfoliated graphitic platelets. Outstanding yields up to 84.2% were achieved at an optimized 0.2 g g-1 graphite : CNF feed ratio. The dispersed graphitic flakes are stabilized by Coulomb repulsion from the surface bound charged CNFs. Aqueous graphene suspensions stabilized by CNFs were easily vacuum filtered into nanopapers that exhibited rapid moisture triggered motion and spontaneous recovery in the absence of moisture, resembling actions of biological motor cells in "shame plant" leaves. Such unique moisture responsive behavior is attributed to the highly accessible, charged CNF surfaces and the recovery is due to the inherently hydrophobic graphene. This facile aqueous exfoliating approach using amphiphilic CNFs as multi-functional exfoliating, dispersing and structural-forming agents for moisture-responsive graphene nanopaper opens up a large-area of potential applications toward biologically inspired sensors and actuators.

This paper tackles the challenge of preparation stable, highly concentrated aqueous graphene dispersions. Despite tremendous recent interest, there has been limited success in developing a method that ensures the total dispersion of non-oxidized, defect-free graphene nanosheets in water. This study successfully demonstrates that few-layer graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can form highly concentrated aqueous colloidal solutions after they have been pretreated in a low-concentration inorganic sodium-hypochlorite and sodium-bromide salted aqueous solvent. This method retains the graphitic structure as evidenced by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Vacuum-filtrated freestanding films demonstrate an electrical conductivity as high as 3000 S m −1 . This dispersion technique is believed to be applicable not only for GNPs, but also for dispersing other types of graphitic materials, including fullerenes, single/double/multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene nanoribbons and etc.

Chemical sensors detect a variety of chemicals across numerous fields, such as automobile, aerospace, safety, indoor air quality, environmental control, food, industrial production and medicine. We successfully assemble an alcohol-sensing device comprising a thin-film sensor made of graphene nanosheets (GNs) and bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNs). We show that the GN/BCN sensor has a high selectivity to ethanol by distinguishing liquid–phase or vapor–phase ethanol (C2H6O) from water (H2O) intelligently with accurate transformation into electrical signals in devices. The BCN component of the film amplifies the ethanol sensitivity of the film, whereby the GN/BCN sensor has 12400% sensitivity for vapor-phase ethanol compared to the pure GN sensor, which has only 21% sensitivity. Finally, GN/BCN sensors demonstrate fast response/recovery times and a wide range of alcohol detection (10–100%). The superior sensing ability of GN/BCN compared to GNs alone is due to the improved wettability of BCNs and the ionization of liquids. We prove a facile, green, low-cost route for the assembly of ethanol-sensing devices with potential for vast application.

Human joints have the ability to recover their mechanical functions after moderate dislocation. This remarkable capability inspired us to develop a "bone-skin-like" mechanosensor that can detect multiple mechanical deformations after recovery from electrical disconnection. To create this sensor, we embedded a low-strength, wet-spun single-walled carbon nanotube wire in polydimethylsiloxane. When various mechanical stimuli are applied, the wire gets fragmented and its resistance increases dramatically (from 360 Ω to practically infinity) in a reversible, recoverable manner even after the electrical failure/disconnection. The sensor is sensitive enough (a gauge factor of 105 at 15% uniaxial strain, a pressure sensitivity of 105 MPa-1 at 0.9 MPa pressure and a torsion sensitivity of 860 at a twisting angle of 60°) to be used for accurate sensing of a variety of deformation modes, suggesting a wide range of applications in wearable and deformable mechanical sensors.

There is an increasing demand for strain sensors with high sensitivity and high stretchability for new applications such as robotics or wearable electronics. However, for the available technologies, the sensitivity of the sensors varies widely. These sensors are also highly nonlinear, making reliable measurement challenging. Here we introduce a new family of sensors composed of a laser-engraved carbon nanotube paper embedded in an elastomer. A roll-to-roll pressing of these sensors activates a pre-defined fragmentation process, which results in a well-controlled, fragmented microstructure. Such sensors are reproducible and durable and can attain ultrahigh sensitivity and high stretchability (with a gauge factor of over 4.2 × 104 at 150% strain). Moreover, they can attain high linearity from 0% to 15% and from 22% to 150% strain. They are good candidates for stretchable electronic applications that require high sensitivity and linearity at large strains.

Wound management and drug release are important applications for electrospun nanofibers. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol)/soy protein isolate (PVA/SPI) nanofiber mats were produced by electrospinning and used as drug carriers. The mats were loaded with ketoprofen by dissolving the drug in the solutions for nanofiber electrospinning. To improve drug release control of the nanofiber mats, a natural tubular nanoparticle, sepiolite, was used as a secondary release control tool. Three types of nanofiber mats were fabricated by electrospinning the solutions prepared by 1) direct mixing of PVA, SPI, and ketoprofen, 2) direct mixing of PVA, SPI, sepiolite, and ketoprofen, and 3) mixing PVA, SPI, and ketoprofen-preloaded sepiolite. The drug release behavior of the mats was studied using UV-vis spectroscopy and the mechanical properties of the mats were investigated by tensile testing. The results showed that sepiolite had a high impact on the release of ketoprofen, with the drug-loaded sepiolite leading to the slowest release. The incorporation of SPI and sepiolite into the PVA nanofibers also increased the mechanical strength of the mats, making them easier to handle and potentially longer-lasting. This study demonstrated the potential of using natural biomaterials and nanomaterials as the components of controlled-release drug delivery vehicles.

Highly stretchable strain sensors are key elements of new applications in wearable electronics and soft robotics. Most of the available technologies only measure positive strain (stretching), and cannot measure negative strains (compression). We propose here a stretchable technology that enables the measurement of both negative and positive strains with high sensitivity. A carbon nanotube paper is pre-cracked to introduce a well-controlled network of open cracks as the sensing element; then, the pre-cracked paper is sandwiched by a thermoplastic elastomer. The resulting sensor is also pre-stretched and subjected to thermal annealing, which removes any residual stress so that the pre-stretched configuration remains stable. This process results in a stretchable structure with a network of open cracks that is sensitive to both negative and positive strains. We demonstrate that such sensors can measure negative strains up to −13% with high sensitivity and robust stretchability.

Paper is an excellent candidate to replace plastics as a substrate for flexible electronics due to its low cost, renewability and flexibility. Cellulose nanopaper (CNP), a new type of paper made of nanosized cellulose fibers, is a promising substrate material for transparent and flexible electrodes due to its potentially high transparency and high mechanical strength. Although CNP substrates can achieve high transparency, they are still characterized by high diffuse transmittance and small direct transmittance, resulting in high optical haze of the substrates. In this study, we proposed a simple methodology for large-scale production of high-transparency, low-haze CNP comprising both long cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and short cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). By varying the CNC/CNF ratio in the hybrid CNP, we could tailor its total transmittance, direct transmittance and diffuse transmittance. By increasing the CNC content, the optical haze of the hybrid CNP could be decreased and its transparency could be increased. The direct transmittance and optical haze of the CNP were 75.1% and 10.0%, respectively, greatly improved from the values of previously reported CNP (31.1% and 62.0%, respectively). Transparent, flexible electrodes were fabricated by coating the hybrid CNP with silver nanowires (AgNWs). The electrodes showed a low sheet resistance (minimum 1.2 Ω sq(-1)) and a high total transmittance (maximum of 82.5%). The electrodes were used to make a light emitting diode (LED) assembly to demonstrate their potential use in flexible displays.

Conductive fibers with enhanced physical properties and functionalities are needed for a diversity of electronic devices. Here, we report very high performance in the thermal and mechanical response of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) microfibers when subjected to an electrical current. These fibers were made by combining the hot-drawing assisted wetspinning process with ethylene glycol doping/de-doping that can work at a current density as high as 1.8 × 104 A cm−2, which is comparable to that of carbon nanotube fibers. Their electrothermal response was investigated using optical sensors and verified to be as fast as 63 °C s−1 and is comparable with that of metallic heating elements (20–50 °C s−1). We investigated the electromechanical actuation resulted from the reversible sorption/desorption of moisture controlled by electro-induced heating. The results revealed an improvement of several orders of magnitudes compared to other linear conductive polymer-based actuators in air. Specifically, the fibers we designed here have a rapid stress generation rate (>40 MPa s−1) and a wide operating frequency range (up to 40 Hz). These fibers have several characteristics including fast response, low-driven voltage, good repeatability, long cycle life and high energy efficiency, favoring their use as heating elements on wearable textiles and as artificial muscles for robotics.

The present study sought to identify the molecular signatures that define a subgroup of primary melanomas with high risks of metastasis and mortality. First, we identified the markers that best differentiated metastatic melanomas from primary melanomas by examining the expression of seven previously reported biomarkers (BRAF, Dicer, Fbw7, KAI1, MMP2, p27 and Tip60) in a training cohort consisting of 145 primary melanomas and 105 metastatic melanomas. KAI1 and p27, both tumor suppressors, emerged as best candidates. Loss of both tumor suppressors occurred in the majority (74.29%) of metastatic melanomas. Further, a subset (metastatic like, or “ML”, 33.10%) of primary melanomas also lost these two tumor suppressors. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that ML subgroup of primary melanoma patients had much worse 5 year survival compared with other primary melanoma patients ( P = 0.002). The result was confirmed in an independent validation cohort with 92 primary melanomas ( P = 0.030) and in the combined cohort with 237 melanoma patients ( P = 3.00E-4). Additionally, compared to KAI1 and p27 as an individual prognostic marker, the combined signature is more closely associated with melanoma patient survival ( P = 0.025, 0.264 and 0.009, respectively). In conclusion, loss of both KAI1 and p27 defines a subgroup of primary melanoma patients with poor prognosis. This molecular signature may help in metastatic melanoma diagnosis and may provide information useful in identifying high-risk primary melanoma patients for more intensive clinical surveillance in the future.

Currently, most carbon aerogels are made of carbon nanotubes or graphene through a catalyst-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. Biomass based organic aerogels and carbon aerogels, featuring low cost, high scalability, and small environmental footprint, represent an important new research direction in (carbon) aerogel development. Cellulose and lignin are the two most abundant natural polymers in the world, and the aerogels based on them are very promising. Classic silicon aerogels and available organic resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) or lignin–resorcinol–formaldehyde (LRF) aerogels are brittle and fragile; toughening of the aerogels is highly desired to expand their applications. This study reports the first attempt to toughen the intrinsically brittle LRF aerogel and carbon aerogel using bacterial cellulose. The facile process is catalyst-free and cost-effective. The toughened carbon aerogels, consisting of blackberry-like, core-shell structured, and highly graphitized carbon nanofibers, are able to undergo at least 20% reversible compressive deformation. Due to their unique nanostructure and large mesopore population, the carbon materials exhibit an areal capacitance higher than most of the reported values in the literature. This property makes them suitable candidates for flexible solid-state energy storage devices. Besides energy storage, the conductive interconnected nanoporous structure can also find applications in oil/water separation, catalyst supports, sensors, etc.

However, multiple studies have shown that melanomas within specific AJCC Stages can exhibit varying progression and clinical outcomes. Thus, additional information, such as that provided by biomarkers is needed to assist in identifying the patients at risk of disease progression. Having previously found six independent prognostic biomarkers in melanoma, including BRAF, MMP2, p27, Dicer, Fbw7 and Tip60, our group has gone on to investigate if these markers are useful in risk stratification of melanoma patients in individual AJCC stages. First, we performed Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox proportional multivariate analyses comparing prognostication power of these markers in 254 melanoma patients for whom the expression levels were known, identifying the best performing markers as candidates for stage-specific melanoma markers. We then verified the results by incorporating an additional independent cohort (87 patients) and in a combined cohort (341 patients). Our data indicate that BRAF and MMP2 are optimal prognostic biomarkers for AJCC Stages I and II, respectively ( P = 0.010, 0.000, Log-rank test); whereas p27 emerged as a good marker for AJCC Stages III/IV (0.018, 0.046, respectively, log-rank test). Thus, our study has identified stage-specific biomarkers in melanoma, a finding which may assist clinicians in designing improved personalized therapeutic modalities.

A dramatic improvement in electrical conductivity is necessary to make conductive polymer fibers viable candidates in applications such as flexible electrodes, conductive textiles, and fast-response sensors and actuators. In this study, high-performance poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) conjugated polymer microfibers were fabricated via wet-spinning followed by hot-drawing. Due to the combined effects of the vertical hot-drawing process and doping/de-doping the microfibers with ethylene glycol (EG), we achieved a record electrical conductivity of 2804 S cm−1. This is, to the best of our knowledge, a six-fold improvement over the best previously reported value for PEDOT/PSS fibers (467 S cm−1) and a two-fold improvement over the best values for conductive polymer films treated by EG de-doping (1418 S cm−1). Moreover, we found that these highly conductive fibers experience a semiconductor–metal transition at 313 K. They also have superior mechanical properties with a Young's modulus up to 8.3 GPa, a tensile strength reaching 409.8 MPa and a large elongation before failure (21%). The most conductive fiber also demonstrates an extraordinary electrical performance during stretching/unstretching: the conductivity increased by 25% before the fiber rupture point with a maximum strain up to 21%. Simple fabrication of the semi-metallic, strong and stretchable wet-spun PEDOT/PSS microfibers described here could make them available for conductive smart electronics.

Aggregation is a major problem for hydrophobic carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in water because it reduces the effective particle concentration, prevents particles from entering the medium, and leads to unstable electronic device performances when a colloidal solution is used. Molecular ligands such as surfactants can help the particles to disperse, but they tend to degrade the electrical properties of CNTs. Therefore, self-dispersed particles without the need for surfactant are highly desirable. We report here, for the first time to our knowledge, that CNT particles with negatively charged hydrophobic/water interfaces can easily self-disperse themselves in water via pretreating the nanotubes with a salt solution with a low concentration of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and sodium bromide (NaBr). The obtained aqueous CNT suspensions exhibit stable and superior colloidal performances. A series of pH titration experiments confirmed the presence and role of the electrical double layers on the surface of the salted carbon nanotubes and of functional groups and provided an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon.

We reported a new photo-controlled synthesis route to fabricate a fluorine-containing thin film for protecting the oxidation of indium tin oxide (ITO) and other derivatives such as the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glasses. A relatively inexpensive, color/metal-free organic phenothiazine-based photocatalyst for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully adopted by an ultraviolet light source to modified substrates. The fluorine thin film had a contact angle (CA) with water of 105.1°, an advancing angle of 112.2°, and a receding angle of 84.6°; leading to a hydrophobic nature with self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties. Our fluorinated conductive glass shows an optical transmittance up to 80–90% in the visible wavelength range. This work demonstrates the great value in the anti-fouling of electronics that secures itself from chemical contaminations in outdoor environments and use at high temperature and chemical erosions.

Lignin-based carbon fibers (CFs) decorated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized and their structure, thermal stability and wettability were systematically studied. The carbon fiber precursors were produced by electrospinning lignin/polyacrylonitrile solutions. CFs were obtained by pyrolyzing the precursors and CNTs were subsequently grown on the CFs to eventually achieve a CF–CNT hybrid structure. The processes of pyrolysis and CNT growth were conducted in a tube furnace using different conditions and the properties of the resultant products were studied and compared. The CF–CNT hybrid structure produced at 850 °C using a palladium catalyst showed the highest thermal stability, i.e., 98.3% residual weight at 950 °C. A mechanism for such superior thermal stability was postulated based on the results from X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy analyses. The dense CNT decoration was found to increase the hydrophobicity of the CFs.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofiber mats were produced by electrospinning. Biobased cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as reinforcement nanofillers were also added to the polymer to produce composite nanofiber mats. The effects of the two cellulose nanofillers on the rheological properties of the PEO solutions and the microstructure, crystallization, and mechanical properties of the mats were systematically compared. The microstructural disparity between the CNCs and CNFs led to significant differences in the solution viscosity, nanofiber morphology and microstructure of the composite nanofiber mats. A unique shish-kebab-like crystalline structure was discovered in both pure and filled PEO nanofibers. Both CNCs and CNFs showed strong reinforcing effects on the nanofiber mats.
