Surface-wave inversion is a powerful tool for revealing the Earth’s internal structure. However, aside from shear-wave velocity (vS), other parameters can influence the inversion outcomes, yet these have not been systematically discussed. This study investigates the influence of various parameter assumptions on the results of surface-wave inversion, including the compressional and shear velocity ratio (vP/vS), shear-wave attenuation (QS), density (ρ), Moho interface, and sedimentary layer. We constructed synthetic models to generate dispersion data and compared the obtained results with different parameter assumptions with those of the true model. The results indicate that the vP/vS ratio, QS, and density (ρ) have minimal effects on absolute velocity values and perturbation patterns in the inversion. Conversely, assumptions about the Moho interface and sedimentary layer significantly influenced absolute velocity values and perturbation patterns. Introducing an erroneous Moho-interface depth in the initial model of the inversion significantly affected the vS model near that depth, while using a smooth initial model results in relatively minor deviations. The assumption on the sedimentary layer not only affects shallow structure results but also impacts the result at greater depths. Non-linear inversion methods outperform linear inversion methods, particularly for the assumptions of the Moho interface and sedimentary layer. Joint inversion with other data types, such as receiver functions or Rayleigh wave ellipticity, and using data from a broader period range or higher-mode surface waves, can mitigate these deviations. Furthermore, incorporating more accurate prior information can improve inversion results.

Lithospheric structure beneath the northeastern Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is of vital significance for studying the geodynamic processes of crustal thickening and expansion of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. We conducted a joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersions with P-wave velocity constraints using data from the ChinArray II temporary stations deployed across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Prior to joint inversion, we applied the H-κ-c method (Li JT et al., 2019) to the receiver function data in order to correct for the back-azimuthal variations in the arrival times of Ps phases and crustal multiples caused by crustal anisotropy and dipping interfaces. High-resolution images of vS, crustal thickness, and vP/vS structures in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau were simultaneously derived from the joint inversion. The seismic images reveal that crustal thickness decreases outward from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The stable interiors of the Ordos and Alxa blocks exhibited higher velocities and lower crustal vP/vS ratios. While, lower velocities and higher vP/vS ratios were observed beneath the Qilian Orogen and Songpan-Ganzi terrane (SPGZ), which are geologically active and mechanically weak, especially in the mid-lower crust. Delamination or thermal erosion of the lithosphere triggered by hot asthenospheric flow contributes to the observed uppermost mantle low-velocity zones (LVZs) in the SPGZ. The crustal thickness, vS, and vP/vS ratios suggest that whole lithospheric shortening is a plausible mechanism for crustal thickening in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, supporting the idea of coupled lithospheric-scale deformation in this region.

IntroductionHeavy metals are ubiquitous environmental pollutants, and fish could be contaminated by these metals, potentially posing a threat to human health through the food chain. Understanding the accumulation of these metals in fish tissues is crucial for assessing the safety of consuming fish products.MethodsIn this study, the distribution of nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in tissues of eight fish species (Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Megalobrama amblycephala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Carassius auratus, Cyprinus carpio, Culter alburnus, and Lateolabrax japonicas) collected from the Baishazhou market with different trophic levels and habitat preference was investigated using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The metal accumulation capacity of different fish tissues and species was assessed, and the metal pollution index (MPI) was calculated to evaluate the extent of metal accumulation ability in each species. Additionally, the health risk assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential threat to human health posed by consuming these fish species.ResultsThe levels of metals exhibited variation among different fish tissues and species, showing an order of Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. In terms of tissues, fish head demonstrated a greater capacity for metal accumulation compared to the muscles. Regarding fish species, the extent of accumulation ability varied depending on the specific metal, exhibiting the following order according to MPI: H. molitrix (0.568) > C. auratus (0.508) > M. amblycephala (0.469) > C. idellus (0.336) > C. alburnus (0.315) > C. carpio (0.274) > L. japonicus (0.263) > H. nobilis (0.206). Furthermore, in accordance with the results of health risk assessment, there was no potential health risk associated with the consumption of these fish species, as all target hazard quotient (THQ) values (ranger from not detected to 0.192) were below 1, and the maximum hazard index (HI) value was observed in C. carpio (0.519 for adults, 0.622 for children).ConclusionThe findings of this study demonstrate the distribution of heavy metals in fish tissues and indicate there were no potential health risk associated with consuming these fish bought from the Baishazhou market.

Background Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been illustrated to contribute to the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). In the present study, we aimed to elucidate how lncRNA taurine upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) influences insulin resistance (IR) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model of GDM. Methods We initially developed a mouse model of HFD-induced GDM, from which islet tissues were collected for RNA and protein extraction. Interactions among lncRNA TUG1/microRNA (miR)-328-3p/sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 (SREBP-2) were assessed by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), HOMA pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA-β), insulin sensitivity index for oral glucose tolerance tests (ISOGTT) and insulinogenic index (IGI) levels in mouse serum were measured through conducting gain- and loss-of-function experiments. Results Abundant expression of miR-328 and deficient expression of lncRNA TUG1 and SREBP-2 were characterized in the islet tissues of mice with HFD-induced GDM. LncRNA TUG1 competitively bound to miR-328-3p, which specifically targeted SREBP-2. Either depletion of miR-328-3p or restoration of lncRNA TUG1 and SREBP-2 reduced the FBG, FINS, HOMA-β, and HOMA-IR levels while increasing ISOGTT and IGI levels, promoting the expression of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway-related genes, and inhibiting apoptosis of islet cells in GDM mice. Upregulation miR-328-3p reversed the alleviative effects of SREBP-2 and lncRNA TUG1 on IR. Conclusion Our study provides evidence that the lncRNA TUG1 may prevent IR following GDM through competitively binding to miR-328-3p and promoting the SREBP-2-mediated ERK signaling pathway inactivation.

The margin of the Tibetan Plateau of Southwest China is one of the most seismically active regions of China and is the location of the China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES). Many studies have developed seismic velocity models of Southwest China, but few have compared and evaluated these models which is important for further model improvement. Thus, we compared six published seismic shear-wave velocity models of Southwest China on absolute velocity and velocity perturbation patterns. The models are derived from different types of data (e.g., surface waves from ambient noise and earthquakes, body-wave travel times, receiver functions) and inversion methods. We interpolated the models into a uniform horizontal grid (0.5° × 0.5°) and vertically sampled them at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 60 km depths. We found significant differences between the six models. Then, we selected three of them that showed greater consistency for further comparison. Our further comparisons revealed systematic biases between models in absolute velocity that may be related to different data types. The perturbation pattern of the model is especially divergent in the shallow part, but more consistent in the deep part. We conducted synthetic and inversion tests to explore possible causes and our results imply that systematic differences between the data, differences in methods, and other factors may directly affect the model. Therefore, the Southwest China velocity model still has considerable room for improvement, and the impact of inconsistency between different data types on the model needs further research. Finally, we proposed a new reference shear-wave velocity model of Southwest China (SwCM-S1.0) based on the three selected models with high consistency. We believe that this model is a better representation of more robust features of the models that are based on different data sets.

Agricultural irrigation is an important vehicle for increasing crop yield, but large-scale irrigation has posed great challenges to global and regional water availability and climate change via altering land–atmosphere interactions. The knowledge of irrigation distribution is essential to understand regional water cycles and guide agricultural management decision-making, but such information is scarce in China. We developed a remote sensing-dominated framework to map irrigated croplands in China at 500 m resolution using a synergetic training sample generating method, machine learning classifier, and a cloud computing platform (Google Earth Engine, GEE). To overcome the challenges of lacking nationwide training samples, we first produced two provisional irrigation maps by fusing statistics and MODIS-derived annual peak greenness indices. The two provisional irrigation maps were then spatially filtered with an existing irrigation product (GRIPC) to construct the initial training sample pool. Next, to enhance the robustness and cover more irrigated candidates, we screened and introduced the irrigated croplands in three land use/cover maps (CCI-LC, GLC_FCS, and NLCD) to supplement the training data pool. Afterward, we utilized locally adaptive random forest classifiers and data cubes (MODIS-derived spectral indices, climatic and topographic variables) to generate irrigation maps in each province of China on GEE. The resulting map outperformed other current irrigation maps with an overall accuracy of 79.2% . The map also showed a reasonable consistency with statistical data at the province and prefecture levels, with the determination coefficient (R2) of 0.89 and 0.77, respectively. In total, we identified 87.04 million hectares of irrigated croplands in mainland China in 2015. Using the resulting map and water use statistics, we found a high correlation between irrigation area and agricultural water use in Northwest, Northeast, and South China, and a low correlation in North China Plain. This map is expected to serve national water resource management and assist decision-making in improving agricultural adaption to climate change.

The spatial patterns of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) changes in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) and their potential causes during the last four decades remain unclear. To clarify this issue, this study firstly depicts the spatial patterns of the NDVI changes using global inventory modelling and mapping studies (GIMMS) NDVI data and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI data. Secondly, the Mann–Kendall test, regression residual analysis and cluster analysis are used to diagnose the potential causes of the NDVI changes. The results show that the regional mean NDVI exhibited an uptrend from 1982 to 2019, which consists of two prominent uptrend periods, i.e., 1982–2003 and 2003–2019. There has been a shift of greening hotspots. The first prominent greening trend from 1982 to 2003 mainly occurred in the eastern agricultural area, while the second prominent greening uptrend from 2003 to 2019 mainly occurred at the junction of Chongqing, Guizhou and Yunnan. The greening trend and shift of greening hotspots were slightly caused by climate change, but mainly caused by human activities. The first greening trend was closely related to the agricultural progress, and the second greening trend was associated with the rapid economic development and implementation of ecology restoration policies.

In this paper, we selected the northeast region as a study area from the perspective of soil nutrient demand, calculated the livestock carrying capacity of farmland under three scenarios where nitrogen nutrient accounts for 35% (low level), 45% (medium level), and 55% (high level) of fertilization, and carried out a risk analysis. The results show that the scale of husbandry breeding is expanding and the scale of the planting industry has remained basically unchanged. Under the three scenarios, there were 23 regions where the livestock manure exceeded the maximum value that could be absorbed by farmland in 2008 and 28 regions in 2019. These regions in the potential area are mostly located in Heilongjiang province and the regions in the restricted area are mostly located in Liaoning Province. On the whole, the northeast region is generally faced with the problem of livestock overloading, and the insufficient utilization and treatment capacity of livestock manure poses a huge threat to regional ecological security. Based on this, adjusting the structure of regional planting and breeding, promoting the development of the livestock manure processing industry, enhancing the production capacity of organic fertilizer, and constructing an integrated pattern of regional planting and breeding are effective ways to realize the sustainable utilization of farmland in northeast China.

Massive blooms of cyanobacteria frequently occur with microcystin (MC) production. Cyanobacteria are exposed to copper stresses such as copper algaecides which are often used to remove cyanobacterial blooms. However, copper increased the MC production of cyanobacteria, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The present study investigated the relationship between copper exposure (0.5 and 3 µM) and MC synthesis in Microcystis aeruginosa PCC 7806. The study concluded that the content of intracellular MCs increased by nearly two times both in 0.5 and 3 µM copper. High-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) provided evidence that copper mainly attacked Fe–S clusters, with evidence of changes in iron, sulfur, iron uptake regulators (fur), glutaredoxins and dehydratase genes. The transcription of numbers of genes implicated in iron uptake, MC synthesis and furA was also evaluated with quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). In these three Cu treatment groups, the amount of MCs increased as copper elevated. As the expression of mcyD gene was directly regulated by FurA and copper ions affected the expression of the FurA-related genes, we believed that MC synthesis genes were controlled by copper. This study has made a further understanding of the mechanism of the increase in MC synthesis of M. aeruginosa PCC 7806 treated with copper-based algaecides. We aimed to understand the mechanism of copper ion influencing the synthesis of MCs.

Teleost skin serves as the first line of defense against invading pathogens, and contain a skin-associated lymphoid tissue (SALT) that elicit gut-like immune responses against antigen stimulation. Moreover, exposed to the water environment and the pathogens therein, teleost skin is also known to be colonized by diverse microbial communities. However, little is known about the interactions between microbiota and the teleost skin mucosal immune system, especially dynamic changes about the interactions under pathogen infection. We hypothesized that dramatic changes of microbial communities and strong mucosal immune response would be present in the skin of aquatic vertebrate under parasite infection. To confirm this hypothesis, we construct an infected model with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which was experimentally challenged by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich). H & E staining of trout skin indicates the successful invasion of Ich and shows the morphological changes caused by Ich infection. Critically, increased mRNA expression levels of immune-related genes were detected in trout skin from experimental groups using qRT-PCR, which were further studied by RNA-Seq analysis. Here, through transcriptomics, we detected that complement factors, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and antimicrobial genes were strikingly induced in the skin of infected fish. Moreover, high alpha diversity values of microbiota in trout skin from the experimental groups were discovered. Interestingly, we found that Ich infection led to a decreased abundance of skin commensals and increased colonization of opportunistic bacteria through 16S rRNA pyrosequencing, which were mainly characterized by lose of Proteobacteria and increased intensity of Flavobacteriaceae. To our knowledge, our results suggest for the first time that parasitic infection could inhibit symbionts and offer opportunities for other pathogens' secondary infection in teleost skin.

To limit global warming to well below 2°C in accord with the Paris Agreement, countries throughout the world have submitted their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) outlining their greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation actions in the next few decades. However, it remains unclear what the resulting climate change is in response to the proposed INDCs and subsequent emission reductions. In this study, the global and regional warming under the updated INDC scenarios was estimated from a range of comprehensive Earth system models (CMIP5) and a simpler carbon-climate model (MAGICC), based on the relationship of climate response to cumulative emissions. The global GHG emissions under the updated INDC pledges are estimated to reach 14.2∼15.0 GtC/year in 2030, resulting in a global mean temperature increase of 1.29∼1.55°C (median of 1.41°C) above the preindustrial level. By extending the INDC scenarios to 2100, global GHG emissions are estimated to be around 6.4∼9.0 GtC/year in 2100, resulting in a global mean temperature increase by 2.67∼3.74°C (median of 3.17°C). The Arctic warming is projected to be most profound, exceeding the global average by a factor of three by the end of this century. Thus, climate warming under INDC scenarios is projected to greatly exceed the long-term Paris Agreement goal of stabilizing the global mean temperature at to a low level of 1.5‐2.0°C above the pre-industrial. Our study suggests that the INDC emission commitments need to be adjusted and strengthened to bridge this warming gap.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of de novo glutamine (Gln) synthesis in the proliferation of C6 glioma cells and its detection with 13 N-ammonia. Methods: Chronic Gln-deprived C6 glioma (0.06C6) cells were established. The proliferation rates of C6 and 0.06C6 cells were measured under the conditions of Gln deprivation along with or without the addition of ammonia or glutamine synthetase (GS) inhibitor. 13 N-ammonia uptake was assessed in C6 cells by gamma counting and in rats with C6 and 0.06C6 xenografts by micro–positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. The expression of GS in C6 cells and xenografts was assessed by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Results: The Gln-deprived C6 cells showed decreased proliferation ability but had a significant increase in GS expression. Furthermore, we found that low concentration of ammonia was sufficient to maintain the proliferation of Gln-deprived C6 cells, and 13 N-ammonia uptake in C6 cells showed Gln-dependent decrease, whereas inhibition of GS markedly reduced the proliferation of C6 cells as well as the uptake of 13 N-ammoina. Additionally, microPET/computed tomography exhibited that subcutaneous 0.06C6 xenografts had higher 13 N-ammonia uptake and GS expression in contrast to C6 xenografts. Conclusion: De novo Gln synthesis through ammonia–glutamate reaction plays an important role in the proliferation of C6 cells. 13 N-ammonia can be a potential metabolic PET tracer for Gln-dependent tumors.

The effect of vegetation on temperature is an emerging topic in the climate science community. Existing studies have mostly examined the effects of vegetation on daytime temperature (Tmax), whereas this study investigates the effects on nighttime temperature (Tmin). Ground measurements from 53 sites across northeastern China (NEC) from 1982 to 2006 show that early summer (June) Tmax and Tmin increased at mean rates of approximately 0.61 °C/10 year and 0.67 °C/10 year, respectively. Over the same period, the satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) decreased by approximately 0.10 (accounting for 18% of the climatological NDVI for 1982–1991). It is highlighted that a larger increase in Tmax (Tmin) co-occurred spatially with a larger (smaller) decrease in NDVI. Deriving from such spatial co-occurrences, we found that the spatial variability of changes in Tmax (i.e., ΔTmax) is negatively correlated with the spatial variability of changes in NDVI (i.e., ΔNDVI), while the spatial variability of changes in Tmin (i.e., ΔTmin) is positively correlated (r2 = 0.10; p < 0.05) with that of ΔNDVI. Similarly, we detected significant positive correlations between the spatial variability of ΔNDVI and the change in surface latent heat flux (r2 = 0.16; p < 0.01) and in surface air specific humidity (r2 = 0.28; p < 0.001). These findings on the spatial co-occurrences suggest that the vegetation growth intensifies the atmospheric water vapor through evapotranspiration, which enhances the atmospheric downward longwave radiation and strengthens the greenhouse warming effects at night. Thereby, the positive correlation between ΔNDVI and ΔTmin is better understood. These results indicate that vegetation growth may not only exert effects on daytime temperature but also exert warming effects on nighttime temperature by increasing atmospheric water vapor and thus intensifying the local greenhouse effect. This study presents new observation evidence of the effects of vegetation on local temperature.

Zooplankton are relatively small in size in the subtropical regions. This characteristic has been attributed to intense predation pressure, high nutrient loading and cyanobacterial biomass. To provide further information on the effect of predation and cyanobacteria on zooplankton size structure, we analyzed data from 96 shallow aquaculture lakes along the Yangtze River. Contrary to former studies, both principal components analysis and multiple regression analysis showed that the mean zooplankton size was positively related to fish yield. The studied lakes were grouped into three types, namely, natural fishing lakes with low nutrient loading (Type1), planktivorous fish-dominated lakes (Type 2), and eutrophic lakes with high cyanobacterial biomass (Type 3). A marked difference in zooplankton size structure was found among these groups. The greatest mean zooplankton size was observed in Type 2 lakes, but zooplankton density was the lowest. Zooplankton abundance was highest in Type 3 lakes and increased with increasing cyanobacterial biomass. Zooplankton mean size was negatively correlated with cyanobacterial biomass. No obvious trends were found in Type 1 lakes. These results were reflected by the normalized biomass size spectrum, which showed a unimodal shape with a peak at medium sizes in Type 2 lakes and a peak at small sizes in Type 3 lakes. These results indicated a relative increase in medium-sized and small-sized species in Types 2 and 3 lakes, respectively. Our results suggested that fish predation might have a negative effect on zooplankton abundance but a positive effect on zooplankton size structure. High cyanobacterial biomass most likely caused a decline in the zooplankton size and encouraged the proliferation of small zooplankton. We suggest that both planktivorous fish and cyanobacteria have substantial effects on the shaping of zooplankton community, particularly in the lakes in the eastern plain along the Yangtze River where aquaculture is widespread and nutrient loading is high.

The worldwide occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms evokes profound concerns. The presence of microcystins (MCs) in waters and aquatic food increases the risk to human health. Some recent studies have suggested that the gonad is the second most important target organ of MCs, however, the potential toxicity mechanisms are still unclear. For a better understanding of reproductive toxicity of MCs on animals, we conducted the present experimental investigation. Male rats were intraperitoneally injected with MC-LR for 50 d with the doses of 1 and 10 µg/kg body weight per day. After prolonged exposure to MC-LR, the testes index significantly decreased in 10 µg/kg group. Light microscope observation indicated that the space between the seminiferous tubules was increased. Ultrastructural observation showed some histopathological characteristics, including cytoplasmic shrinkage, cell membrane blebbing, swollen mitochondria and deformed nucleus. Using Q-PCR methods, the transcriptional levels of some cytoskeletal and mitochondrial genes were determined. MC-LR exposure affected the homeostasis of the expression of cytoskeletal genes, causing possible dysfunction of cytoskeleton assembly. In MC-LR treatments, all the 8 mitochondrial genes related with oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) significantly increased. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level significantly increased in 10 µg/kg group. The mitochondria swelling and DNA damage were also determined in 10 µg/kg group. Hormone levels of testis significantly changed. The present study verified that both cytoskeleton disruption possibly due to cytoskeletal reorganization or depolymerization and mitochondria dysfunction interact with each other through inducing of reactive oxygen species and oxidative phosphorylation, and jointly result in testis impairment after exposure to MC-LR.

Using the coupled WRF-Noah model, we conducted two experiments to investigate impacts of the interannual variability of leaf area index (LAI) on the surface air temperature (SAT) in eastern China. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observed dynamic LAI data from 2002 to 2009 were used in one modeling experiment, and the climatological seasonal cycle of the MODIS LAI was used in the other experiment. The results show that the use of dynamic LAI improves model performance. Compared with the use of climatological LAI, the use of dynamic LAI may reduce the warm (cool) bias in the years with large positive (negative) LAI anomalies. The reduction of the warm bias results from the modeled cooling effect of LAI increase through reducing canopy resistance, promoting transpiration, and decreasing sensible heat flux. Conversely, the reduction of cool bias is a result of the warming effect of negative anomaly of LAI. The use of dynamic LAI can improve model performance in summer and to a lesser extent, spring and autumn. Moreover, the dynamic LAI exerts a detectable influence on SAT in the WRF model when the LAI anomaly is at least 20% of the climatological LAI.

To understand the effects of the land use/cover changes due to agricultural development on summer climate in Eastern China, four 12-year simulations using the WRF-SSiB model were performed. We found that agricultural development resulted in warming and rainy effects. In the middle to lower reaches of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, the warming effects were approximately 0.6°C and resulted from increased surface net radiation and sensible heat fluxes. In Northeast China, the warming effects were very small due to increases in latent heat fluxes which resulted from the extensive conversion from grassland to cropland. The rainy effect resulted from increases in convective rainfall, which was associated with a warming surface in certain areas of the Yellow River and Yangtze River and a large increase in the surface moisture flux in Northeast China. Conversely, in the middle to lower reaches of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, the grid-scale rainfall decreased because the climatological northward wind, which is moist and warm, was partially offset by a southward wind anomaly. These findings suggest that the agricultural development left footprints not only on the present climate but also on the historical climate changes before the industrial revolution.

Meteorological stations in Northwest China are surrounded by large proportions of cultivated land. The relations between the change of surface wind speed and the cultivated land fractions (CF) within a 4 km radius at 135 meteorological stations over arid Northwest China are investigated. Stations with larger CF experienced larger declines in surface wind speed from 1960 to 2007. Compared with the wind speed variation in the Tibetan Plateau where agricultural development is negligible, stations with low CF show similar variation, whereas the wind speed at stations with large CF illustrates a sharp decrease in the 1970s–1980s, during which irrigated agriculture developed rapidly. The observed wind speed at the station surrounded by irrigated fields in the Jingtai Irrigation District, shows a rapid wind speed decrease during the same period when the irrigated area expanded. By contrast, rapid wind decrease is not observed at a nearby station with minimal influence of agricultural development.

This study analysed the changes in cropland greenness during 1982–2006 in the North China Plain (NCP) and investigated the warming/cooling effects of the greenness changes. The results show that while spring cropland greenness increased, early summer cropland greenness substantially decreased from 1982 to 2006. In contrast to the cooling and wetting effects of the greenness increase in spring, the greenness reduction in early summer had warming and drying effects. The cooling/warming effects of cropland greenness changes accounted for ∼47% of the spatial variance of daily maximum temperature ( T _max ) change in spring and ∼44% in early summer. The wetting/drying effects of cropland greenness changes accounted for ∼48% of the spatial variance of daily minimum specific humidity (SPH _min ) change in spring and ∼19% in early summer. The cooling–wetting/warming–drying effects mainly resulted from the distinct partitioning of surface net radiation between surface latent heat flux and sensible heat flux over cropland with different greenness. Canopy transpiration plays a dominant role. The increased (decreased) cropland greenness corresponds to high (low) transpiration rate, less (more) sensible heat flux and high (low) humidity, and consequently cooling–wetting (warming–drying) effects. In comparison, there was little change in surface net radiation, although surface albedo and emissivity had changed with greenness change.

Afforestation has been considered a critical nature-based solution to mitigate global warming. China has announced an ambitious afforestation plan covering an area of 73.78×104 km² from 2020 to 2050. However, it is unclear where it will be suitable for afforestation under future climate change. Here, we carried out a finer resolution (25 by 25 km) of climate change dynamic downscaling for China using the WRF model nested with bias-corrected MPI–ESM1–2–HR model; then, using the Holdridge life zone model forced by the WRF model output, we mapped the climatological suitability for forest in China. The results showed that the potential forestation domain (PFD) at present (1995–2014) approximated 500.75×104 km², and it would increase to 518.25×104 km², by about 3.49 %, to the period of 2041–2060 under the SSP2–4.5 scenario. Considering the expansion of the future PFD caused by climate change, the afforestation area for each province was allocated into grid cells following the climatological suitability for the forest. The newly afforestation grid cells would occur around and to the east of the Hu Line. Due to afforestation, the land cover would be modified. The conversion of grasslands to deciduous broadleaf forests in northern China covered most area, accounting for 41 % of the newly afforestation area. The grid cell-resolved afforestation dataset was consistent with the provincial afforestation plan and the future climatological forest suitability. It would be valuable for investigating the impacts of future afforestation on various aspects, including the carbon budget, ecosystem services, water resources, and surface climate.
