The introduction of RGO-wrapped ferrites/ferromagnetic composites avoids agglomeration and ensures full utilization of ferromagnetic loss.

Based on the engineering quota method and the actual situation of aerospace enterprise, the quota method of spacecraft is studied. The framework and principles of spacecraft quota is established, and the quota method of is explored for the follow-up spacecraft quotation.

Perovskite-structured SrTi0.7Co0.3O3−δ (STCo) films of varying thicknesses were grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Thin films grow with a cube-on-cube epitaxy, but for films exceeding a critical thickness of about 120 nm, a double-epitaxial microstructure was observed, in which (110)-oriented crystals nucleated within the (001)-oriented STCo matrix, both orientations being epitaxial with the substrate. The crystal structure, strain state, and magnetic properties are described as a function of film thickness. Both the magnetic moment and the coercivity show maxima at the critical thickness. The formation of a double-epitaxial microstructure provides a mechanism for strain relief in epitaxially mismatched films.

Perovskite-structured SrTi

Photonic integrated circuits require magneto-optical (MO) materials for making nonreciprocal devices such as isolators and circulators. The most successful MO materials are rare-earth-substituted iron garnets, but these can be challenging to grow on silicon without a seed layer, which introduces spacing loss between the waveguide and the MO cladding. A pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) method is used for making MO Ce:YIG (Ce1Y2Fe5O12)/YIG (Y3Fe5O12) bilayer or trilayer films on different substrates, including silicon, quartz, and Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), in which a multilayer film is deposited in one run and then annealed. A YIG seed layer grown above the MO Ce:YIG facilitates recrystallization during ex situ rapid thermal annealing, which results in a reduced thermal budget and simplified deposition process. A monolithically integrated optical isolator was demonstrated by direct deposition of a bilayer Ce:YIG/YIG capping layer onto a silicon-on-insulator resonator. The device exhibited an insertion loss of 7.4 ± 1.8...

Both polycrystalline and single-crystal films of iron-substituted strontium titanate, Sr(Ti0.65Fe0.35)O3-delta, prepared by pulsed laser deposition, show room-temperature magnetism and Faraday rotation, with the polycrystalline films exhibiting higher saturation magnetization and Faraday rotation. The magnetic properties vary with the oxygen pressure at which the films are grown, showing a maximum at pressures of approximately 4 mu Torr at which the unit-cell volume is largest. The results are discussed in terms of the oxygen stoichiometry and corresponding Fe valence states, the structure and strain state, and the presence of small-volume fractions of metallic Fe in single-crystal films grown at the optimum deposition pressure. There is great interest in self-assembled oxide vertical nanocomposite films consisting of epitaxial spinel pillars in a single crystal perovskite matrix, due to their tunable electronic, magnetic, and multiferroic properties. Varying the composition or geometry of the pillars in the out-of-plane direction has not been previously reported but can provide new routes to tailoring their properties in three dimensions. In this work, ferrimagnetic epitaxial CoFe2O4, MgFe2O4, or NiFe2O4 spinel nanopillars with an out-of-plane modulation in their composition and shape are grown in a BiFeO3 matrix on a (001) SrTiO3 substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Changing the pillar composition during growth produces a homogeneous pillar composition due to cation interdiffusion, but this can be suppressed using a sufficiently thick blocking layer of BiFeO3 to produce bi-pillar films containing for example a layer of magnetically hard CoFe2O4 pillars and a layer of magnetically soft MgFe2O4 pillars, which form in different locations. A thinner blocking layer enables contact between the top of the CoFe2O4 and the bottom of the MgFe2O4 which leads to correlated growth of the MgFe2O4 pillars directly above the CoFe2O4 pillars and provides a path for interdiffusion. The magnetic hysteresis of the nanocomposites is related to the pillar structure.

Self-assembled epitaxial BiFeO3-MgO and BiFeO3-MgAl2O4 nanocomposite thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. A two-phase columnar structure was observed for BiFeO3-MgO codeposition within a small window of growth parameters, in which the pillars consisted of a magnetic spinel phase (Mg,Fe)3O4 within a BiFeO3 matrix, similar to the growth of BiFeO3-MgFe2O4 nanocomposites reported elsewhere. Further, growth of a nanocomposite with BiFeO3-(CoFe2O4/MgO/MgFe2O4), in which the minority phase was grown from three different targets, gave spinel pillars with a uniform (Mg,Fe,Co)3O4 composition due to interdiffusion during growth, with a bifurcated shape from the merger of neighboring pillars. BiFeO3-MgAl2O4 did not form a well-defined vertical nanocomposite in spite of having lower lattice mismatch, but instead formed a two-phase film with in which the spinel phase contained Fe. These results illustrate the redistribution of Fe between the oxide phases during oxide codeposition to form a ferrimagnetic phase from antiferromagnetic or nonmagnetic targets.

Self-assembled BiFeO3–CoFe2O4 nanocomposites were templated into ordered structures in which the ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 pillars form square arrays of periods 60–100 nm in a ferroelectric BiFeO3 matrix. The ferroelectricity, magnetism, conductivity, and magnetoelectric coupling of the ordered nanocomposites were characterized by scanning probe microscopy. The insulating BiFeO3 matrix exhibited ferroelectric domains, whereas the resistive CoFe2O4 pillars exhibited single-domain magnetic contrast with high anisotropy due to the magnetoelasticity of the spinel phase. Magnetoelectric coupling was observed in which an applied voltage led to reversal of the magnetic pillars.

The anaerobic ribonucleoside triphosphate reductase of Escherichia coli is an iron-sulfur protein carrying an oxygen-sensitive organic radical, which is essential for catalysis. The radical was tentatively proposed to be on glycine 681, based on a comparison with the glycyl radical-containing enzyme pyruvate formate-lyase. By EPR spectroscopy of selectively 2H- and 13C-labeled anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase, the radical was now unambiguously assigned to carbon-2 of a glycine residue. The large 1H hyperfine splitting (1.4 millitesla) was assigned to the α-proton. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to change glycine 681 into an alanine residue. In separate experiments, the two adjacent residues, cysteine 680 and tyrosine 682, were changed into serine and phenylalanine, respectively. All mutated proteins were retained on dATP-Sepharose, indicating that the mutant proteins had intact allosteric sites. They also contained amounts of iron comparable with the wild type reductase and showed the same iron-sulfur-related spectrum, suggesting that the mutant proteins were properly folded. Of the three mutant proteins only the G681A protein completely lacked the detectable glycyl radical as well as enzyme activity. Our results identify glycine 681 as the stable free radical site in E. coli anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase.

The structure and magnetic properties of epitaxial (Ce(x)Sr(1-x))(Ti(0.6)Fe(0.4))O(3-δ) (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) and (La(x)Sr(1-x))(Ti(0.6)Fe(0.4))O(3-δ) (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) perovskite-structure thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition on (LaAlO(3))(0.3)(Sr(2)AlTaO(6))(0.7) (LSAT) substrates are reported. Both La and Ce ions showed a dominant 3+ valence state and acted as donors on the Sr(2+) site (A site) in the perovskite lattice. The optical band gap widened, and the Fermi level moved toward the vacuum level with increased Ce or La content; meanwhile the Ti and particularly the Fe ions were driven to a lower valence state, resulting in a higher Fe(2+) concentration. The materials were magnetic at room temperature with up to 0.8 μ(B)/Fe and a magnetoelastic out-of-plane anisotropy. Ce and La lowered the coercivity while raising both the Faraday rotation at 1550 nm and the optical absorption at near-infrared wavelengths.

The anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase from Escherichia coli contains a glycyl radical as part of its polypeptide structure. The radical is generated by an enzyme system present in E. coli. The reductase is coded for by the nrdD gene located at 96 min. Immediately downstream, we now find an open reading frame with the potential to code for a 17.5-kDa protein with sequence homology to a protein required for the generation of the glycyl radical of pyruvate formate lyase. The protein corresponding to this open reading frame is required for the generation of the glycyl radical of the anaerobic reductase and binds tightly to the reductase. The "activase" contains iron, required for activity. The general requirements for generation of a glycyl radical are identical for the reductase and pyruvate formate lyase. For the reductase, the requirement of an iron-containing activase suggests the possibility that the iron-sulfur cluster of the enzyme is not involved in radical generation but may participate directly in the reduction of the ribonucleotide.

Two proteins, called alpha and beta 3, copurify with the anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase from Escherichia coli (Eliasson et al. (1990) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 87, 3314-3318). Both are now identified as products of the clpB gene that is presumed to code for a subunit of an ATP dependent protease. The tight associations suggest the possibility that the ClpB proteins are involved in the regulation of the anaerobic reductase.

Cerium substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) films were grown on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) seed layers on silicon nitride films using pulsed laser deposition. Optimal process conditions for forming garnet films on silicon nitride are presented. Bulk or near-bulk magnetic and magneto-optical properties were observed for 160 nm thick Ce:YIG films grown at 640 °C on rapid thermal annealed 40 nm thick YIG grown at 640 °C and 2 Hz pulse rate. The effect of growth temperature and deposition rate on structural, magnetic and magneto-optical properties has been investigated.

The reduction of ribonucleotides is catalyzed by different enzymes in aerobic and anaerobic Escherichia coli, each with a different primary and quaternary structure. Here, we describe the allosteric regulation of the substrate specificity of the anaerobic ribonucleoside triphosphate reductase. The enzyme reduced ribonucleotides at a low basal rate. Reduction was stimulated up to 10-fold by an appropriate modulator (dGTP for ATP reduction, ATP for CTP and UTP reduction, and dTTP for GTP reduction). dGTP and dTTP inhibited the reduction of the "incorrect" substrate; dATP inhibited reduction of all four. From kinetic, effector binding, and competition experiments we conclude that the enzyme has two classes of sites, one that binds ATP and dATP and regulates pyrimidine ribonucleotide reduction ("pyrimidine site"), the other that binds dATP, dGTP, and dTTP and regulates purine ribonucleotide reduction ("purine site"). This model differs slightly from the model for the aerobic reductase, but the physiological consequences remain the same and explain how a single enzyme can provide a balanced supply of the four dNTPs. The similarity of a highly sophisticated control mechanism for the aerobic and anaerobic enzymes suggests that both arose by divergent evolution from a common ancestor, in spite of their different structures.

During anaerobic growth of Escherichia coli an oxygen-sensitive ribonucleoside-triphosphate reductase, different from the aerobic ribonucleoside diphosphate-reductase (EC 1.17.4.1), produces the deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates required for DNA replication. The gene for the anaerobic enzyme has now been cloned and was found to contain a 2136-nucleotide coding region, corresponding to 712 amino acid residues, and an Fnr binding site 228 base pairs upstream of the initiator ATG. The deduced amino acid sequence shows 72% identity to a gene of coliphage T4, sunY, hitherto of unknown function, suggesting that the virus codes for its own anaerobic reductase. The location of an organic free radical formed during activation of the bacterial anaerobic reductase is proposed to be on Gly-681, since the pentapeptide RVCGY at positions 678-682 shows a striking similarity to the C-terminal sequence. RVSGY, of pyruvate formate-lyase. During activation of the anaerobically induced pyruvate formate-lyase, the glycine residue of the pentapeptide becomes an organic radical [Wagner, A. F. V., Frey, M., Neugebauer, F. A., Schäfer, W. & Knappe, J. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 89, 996-1000]. The gene for the anaerobic reductase is located at a position around 96 min on the E. coli genomic map.
