Abstract Thought-out utilization of entire lignocellulose is of great importance to achieving sustainable and cost-effective biorefineries. However, there is a trade-off between efficient carbohydrate utilization and lignin-to-chemical conversion yield. Here, we fractionate corn stover into a carbohydrate fraction with high enzymatic digestibility and reactive lignin with satisfactory catalytic depolymerization activity using a mild high-solid process with aqueous diethylamine (DEA). During the fractionation, in situ amination of lignin achieves extensive delignification, effective lignin stabilization, and dramatically reduced nonproductive adsorption of cellulase on the substrate. Furthermore, by designing a tandem fractionation-hydrogenolysis strategy, the dissolved lignin is depolymerized and aminated simultaneously to co-produce monophenolics and pyridine bases. The process represents the viable scheme of transforming real lignin into pyridine bases in high yield, resulting from the reactions between cleaved lignin side chains and amines. This work opens a promising approach to the efficient valorization of lignocellulose.

Lithium bromide molten salt hydrate (∼62 wt% aqueous solution of LiBr) can dissolve cellulose, but the cellulose dissolution mechanisms are not fully understood. This study revisited cellulose dissolution in the LiBr solution and aimed to provide new insights into the dissolution mechanisms. The collected evidence suggested that cellulose dissolution in the LiBr solution is primarily attributed to the disruption of intermolecular H-bonds of cellulose by the ion-dipole coordination between hydrated Li+ and cellulose hydroxy. The coordination between Li+ and cellulose was verified by 7Li NMR and simultaneous DSC-TGA analysis. The observations in this study also suggest that polarizable, large-size, and low-electronegativity Br– plays a synergetic and supplementary role in the dissolution of cellulose. In addition, the dissolution of cellulose in the LiBr solution is greatly dependent on dissolution conditions (LiBr concentration, temperature, pH, and cellulose loading) and cellulose properties (particle size and degree of polymerization).

Partial nitrification (PN) is an effective process for treating high-strength ammonium wastewater with a low COD/N (chemical oxygen demand/total nitrogen) ratio; this is because the cooperative interaction with denitrification or anammox can result in a reduction in aeration costs of approximately 25% and a reduction in the use of organic sources during biological nitrogen removal of 40%. However, the key functional microorganisms in the partial nitrification (PN) process are ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which are autotrophic microorganisms that are influenced by carbon sources. Therefore, the COD/N ratio affects the performance of the PN process when treating high-strength ammonium wastewater. In this study, five sequence batch reactors were constructed and operated for 42 days; they were fed with synthetic high-strength ammonium wastewater (500 mg/L) with various COD/N ratios (at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4). The results suggested that the PN process could be accomplished at COD/N ratios of 0 and 0.5, but its performance decreased significantly when the COD/N ratio increased to 1 due to the occurrence of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The AOB could not compete with the heterotrophic bacteria; as the COD/N ratios increased, the abundance of Nitrosomonas (a genus of autotrophic AOB) decreased, and it was not detected at COD/N ratios of 2 and 4. Instead, the heterotrophic nitrification and heterotrophic denitrification (HNAD) bacteria appeared, and their relative abundance increased when the COD/N ratios increased from 1 to 4.

The threat posed by water pollutants to aquatic ecosystems and human health cannot be overlooked, and the assessment of the toxicity of these contaminants is paramount to understanding their risks and formulating effective control measures. Luminescent bacteria-based assays, as a vital tool in evaluating contaminant toxicity, encounter a challenge in ensuring accuracy due to the phenomenon of “Hormesis” exhibited by pollutants towards biological entities, which may skew toxicity assessments. This study elucidated the specific effects of pollutants on luminescent bacteria at different concentrations, used modeling to characterize the effects and predict their toxicity trends, and explored the applicable concentration ranges for different pollutants. Research revealed that six typical pollutants, namely PAHs, endocrine disruptors, antibiotics, pesticides, heavy metals, and phytosensory substances, could promote the luminescence intensity of luminescent bacteria at low concentrations, and the promotional effect increased and then decreased. However, when the concentration of the substances reached a certain threshold, the effect changed from promotional to inhibitory, and the rate of inhibition was directly proportional to the concentration. The EC50 values of six types of substances to luminescent bacteria is as follows: endocrine disruptors > pesticides > antibiotics > heavy metals > polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons > chemosensory agents. The effect curves were further fitted using the model to analyze the maximum point of the promotion of luminescence intensity by different substances, the threshold concentration, and the tolerance of luminescent bacteria to different substances. The maximum promotion of bacterial luminescence intensity was 29% for Bisphenol A at 0.005 mg/L and the minimum threshold concentration of chromium was 0.004 mg/L, and the maximum bacterial tolerance to erythromycin is 6.74. In addition, most of the current environmental concentrations had a positive effect on luminescent bacteria and may still be in the range of concentrations that promote luminescence as the substances continue to accumulate. These findings will enhance the accuracy and comprehensiveness of toxicity assessments, thereby facilitating more informed and effective decision-making in the realms of environmental protection and pollution management.

Phenolic compounds are important components that affect the taste and health-care function of walnuts. And phenolic compounds in walnut (Juglans sigillata Dode. cv. ‘Qianhe 7’) pellicles at three developmental stages were explored to identify their role. The results showed that the total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, ferric reducing antioxidant power, 2, 2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activities in pellicles increased gradually during fruits development, and reached the maximum value at maturation period. Syringic acid, gallic acid, catechin, and rutin contents were highly significantly positively correlated with reducing power or highly significantly negatively correlated with IC50 of free radical scavenging activities. Gallic acid and rutin contents were highly significantly positively correlated with phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity. Total phenolic content, syringic acid, catechins, and rutin contents were highly significantly negatively correlated with cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H) and 4-coumarate CoA ligase (4CL) activities. Ferulic acid content was highly significantly positively correlated with polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity. Overall, PAL, C4H, 4CL and PPO were key enzymes in the metabolism of polyphenols, and they affected the antioxidant capacity of the pellicles by regulating the content of polyphenol during walnut fruit development.

Abstract This work is used to design a novel robust optimization control law augmented with Robust Generalized Dynamic Inversion (RGDI) for continuous varying perturbations in the Twin Rotor MIMO System (TRMS). The perturbations like coupling effect, un-known states, gyroscopic disturbance torque, parametric uncertainties and parametric disturbances are considered as unwanted signal which should be optimized by an efficient controller. The variable structured systems like the TRMS (prototype) have great focus due to its high computational cost with a higher order non-linear behavior. The RGDI based controller designed to remove nonlinear dynamics as well as to avoid singularity issue with the augmentation of stability based mathematical operations (lyapunov stability analysis, controllability and observability matrices ) in the presence of considered perturbations during implementation. In this paper, we develop estimation of state deviation calculation between control angles and desired angles known as Euclidean error norm. The next step was to design RGDI based controller [Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ optimization] to minimize considered perturbations as well as the computational cost. The sharp (rapid) chattering phenomena in RGDI based SMC reduce the actuators performance that goes towards the failure of actuators. While the RGDI based $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ optimization overcome the computational cost and minimizes $${H_\infty }$$ H ∞ norm that’s guaranteeing the robust stability as well as robust performance. The robustness of the optimization control technique validated by taking its worst case via MATLAB-Simulation. A real-time implementation applied to evaluate the worth of novel dynamic approach.

Background: One of the crucial processes for small RNA synthesis and plant disease resistance is RNA interference (RNAi). Dicer-like (DCL), RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RDR), double-stranded RNA binding (DRB), and Argonaute are important proteins implicated in RNAi (AGO). Numerous significant woody plants belong to the Juglandaceae; walnut is one of the four groups of woody plants on earth and one of the four groups of dried fruits. Methods: In order to correlate walnuts and their homologues, this work integrated numerous web resources from structural analysis and transcriptome data collected from gene families in order to elucidate the evolution and functional differentiation of RNA-related proteins in the walnut (Juglans rega) genome. Results: 5 DCL genes, 13 RDR genes, 15 DRB genes, and 15 AGO genes are found in the walnut genome and encode conserved protein domains and motifs with similar subcellular distribution.There are three classes and seven subclasses of walnut AGO proteins. RDRS are primarily split into four categories, whereas DRBs can be divided into six. DCLs are separated into four groups. The walnut RDR1 copy number of 9 is the exception, with 7 of those copies being dispersed in clusters on chromosome 16. Proteins are susceptible to various levels of purification selection, but in walnut, purification selection drives gene creation. These findings also indicated some resemblance in other plants belonging to the walnut family. Under various tissues and stresses, many RNA-related genes in walnut produced abundant, selective expression. Conclusions: In this study, the genome of the Juglandaceae’s DCL, RDR, DRB, and AGO gene families were discovered and analysed for the first time. The evolution, structure, and expression characteristics of these families were also preliminary studied, offering a foundation for the development and breeding of the walnut RNAi pathway.

The cadmium tolerance capacity of Canna orchioides was evaluated using glasshouse experiment to lay a theoretical foundation to broad applications of this species in cadmium (Cd) polluted areas. The plant growth, Cd absorption, and antioxidative enzyme activities of canna plants treated with different Cd concentrations (0, 100, and 200 mg · kg−1 per dry soil) for 30 days were investigated. The results indicated that the growth of roots, leaves and stems was restricted following Cd addition. The bio-concentration factor was the highest in the roots, followed by the leaves, rhizomes, and stems. Compared with the control, the translocation factor decreased sharply after 100 mg · kg−1 or 200 mg · kg−1 Cd treatment, whereas the tolerance index decreased significantly under 200 mg · kg−1 Cd exposure. The Cd accumulation rate and total Cd accumulation significantly increased under 200 mg · kg−1 Cd treatment than the control. The malondialdehyde content remained unchanged at different Cd concentrations, while the relative electrical conductivity of the root increased significantly following 200 mg · kg−1 Cd treatment. Cd stress increased significantly the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in the leaves, whereas only SOD was raised in the roots. The catalase (CAT) and POD activity in the roots did not differ significantly at different Cd concentrations. Conversely, APX in the roots decreased significantly under Cd stress, which suggests that the protective mechanisms in the leaves differ from those in the roots. These results indicated that C. orchioides has a high tolerance for Cd. Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species caused by Cd stress could be effectively scavenged by the antioxidative system. The present study proved that C. orchioides constitutes a promising ornamental plant for use in the restoration of areas contaminated with Cd.

Gastrodia elata is a valuable traditional Chinese medicinal plant. However, G. elata crops are affected by major diseases, such as brown rot. Previous studies have shown that brown rot is caused by Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani. To further understand the disease, we studied the biological and genome characteristics of these pathogenic fungi. Here, we found that the optimum growth temperature and pH of F. oxysporum (strain QK8) and F. solani (strain SX13) were 28 °C and pH 7, and 30 °C and pH 9, respectively. An indoor virulence test showed that oxime tebuconazole, tebuconazole, and tetramycin had significant bacteriostatic effects on the two Fusarium species. The genomes of QK8 and SX13 were assembled, and it was found that there was a certain gap in the size of the two fungi. The size of strain QK8 was 51,204,719 bp and that of strain SX13 was 55,171,989 bp. Afterwards, through phylogenetic analysis, it was found that strain QK8 was closely related to F. oxysporum, while strain SX13 was closely related to F. solani. Compared with the published whole-genome data for these two Fusarium strains, the genome information obtained here is more complete; the assembly and splicing reach the chromosome level. The biological characteristics and genomic information we provide here lay the foundation for further research on G. elata brown rot.

With the hot rise and increasing popularity of e-commerce and online shopping, exponentially growing orders require to be picked up timely. In the order-based warehouse picking process, more intelligent optimization methods are urgently demanded to meet the maturity of robot technology. Due to the wide variety of SKUs (stock-keeping units) in warehouses, direct analysis based on orders can hardly get strong correlations among SKUs. Since orders and SKUs usually are presented in text form files, this paper proposes a clustering optimization algorithm based on text information granules which makes full use of context information and semantics. Storage assignment is determined by clustering SKUs first and then performing correlation analysis on the clustering results according to orders. The algorithm can give the semantic description of each cluster so that the clustering process is interpretable and transparent. Extensive experiments on a distribution center of a clothing production enterprise indicate 40.5 to 57.9% improvement in the average order picking distance compared with the ABC classification.

Tamoxifen is commonly used to treat estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. Phytoconstituents are considered candidates for chemopreventive drugs in cancer treatment. However, it remains unknown what would happen if tamoxifen and phytoconstituents were administrated simultaneously. We aimed to observe the synergistic antitumor effects of tamoxifen and naringenin/quercetin on human hepatic carcinoma and to explore the potential underlying molecular mechanisms. The HepG2 cell line was used as an in vitro model. Cell proliferation, invasion, migration, cycle progression and apoptosis were investigated along with reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) repression. The signaling pathways involved were identified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis. As the results show, tamoxifen in combination with higher concentrations of naringenin or quercetin significantly inhibited cell growth compared to either agent alone. These antiproliferative effects were accompanied by the inhibition of cell migration and invasion but the stimulation of cell apoptosis and loss of ΔΨm, which depended on the ROS-regulated p53 signaling cascades. Conversely, lower concentrations of naringenin and quercetin inhibited the tamoxifen-induced cell antiproliferative effects by regulating cell migration, invasion, cycle and apoptosis. Taken together, our findings revealed that phytoconstituents exerted contradictory cytoprotective and cytotoxic effects induced by tamoxifen in human hepatic cancer.

As a typical ancient tetraploid, soybean (Glycine max) is an important oil crop species and plays a crucial role in supplying edible oil, plant protein and animal fodder worldwide. As global warming intensifies, the yield of soybean in the field is often strongly restricted by drought stress. SNF1-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) and type A protein phosphatase 2C (PP2C-A) family members are core components of the abscisic acid (ABA) signal transduction pathway in plants and have been suggested to play important roles in increasing plant tolerance to drought stress, but genetic information supporting this idea is still lacking in soybean. Here, we cloned the GmSnRK2s and GmPP2C-A family genes from the reference genome of Williams 82 soybean. The results showed that the expression patterns of GmSnRK2s and GmPP2C-As are spatiotemporally distinct. The expression of GmSnRK2s in response to ABA and drought signals is not strictly the same as that of Arabidopsis SnRK2 homologous genes. Moreover, our results indicated that the duplicate pairs of GmSnRK2s and GmPP2C-As have similar expression patterns, cis-elements and relationships. GmSnRK2.2 may have a distinct function in the drought-mediated ABA signaling pathway. Furthermore, the results of yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assays between GmSnRK2s and GmPP2C-As revealed that GmSnRK2.17, GmSnRK2.18, GmSnRK2.22, GmPP2C5, GmPP2C7, GmPP2C10 and GmPP2C17 may play central roles in the crosstalk among ABA signals in response to drought stress. Furthermore, GmPP2C-As and GmSnRKs were targeted by miRNA and validated by degradome sequencing, which may play multiple roles in the crosstalk between ABA and drought signals and other stress signals. Taken together, these results indicate that GmSnRK2s and GmPP2C-As may play a variety of roles in the drought-mediated ABA signaling pathway.

The postharvest deterioration of mango fruits is a critical issue limiting mango storage and preservation due to its climacteric nature. This study evaluated the storage behavior of two mango cultivars and their response to exogenous melatonin (MT, 1000 μmol L−1) treatment in attenuating fruit decay and enhancing fruits’ physiological and metabolic processes and gene relative expression subjected to cold storage. MT treatment in both mango cultivars significantly delayed weight loss, firmness, respiration rate, and decay incidence. However, MT did not influence the TSS, TA, and TSS:TA ratio regardless of the cultivar. Moreover, MT inhibited the decrease in total phenol and flavonoid content and AsA content while delaying the increase in the MDA content of mango during storage in both cultivars. In addition, MT dramatically inhibited the enzyme activity of PPO. In contrast, an increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and APX) and PAL and their genes’ relative expression was noticed in MT-treated fruits versus control in both cultivars. However, MT treatment was cultivar dependent in most parameters under study. These results demonstrated that MT treatment could be an essential postharvest treatment in minimizing decay, maintaining fruit quality, and extending mango fruits’ postharvest shelf life by enhancing the physiological and metabolic processes during cold storage.

As the third most edible fungus in the world, Auricularia auricular needs a lot of sawdust for cultivation; thus, it is a win–win method to develop waste wood sawdust suitable for black agaric cultivation. This study evaluated the growth, agronomic characters and nutritional quality of A. auricula cultured on different ratios of miscellaneous sawdust and walnut waste wood sawdust, and comprehensively analyzed the feasibility of cultivating black agaric with walnut sawdust using principal component method (PCA). The results showed that the macro mineral elements and phenolic substances in walnut sawdust were significantly higher than those of miscellaneous sawdust by 18.32–89.00%. The overall activity of extracellular enzymes reached the highest when the ratio of the substrate was 0:4 (miscellaneous sawdust: walnut sawdust). The mycelia of 1:3 substrates grew well and fast. In addition, the growth cycle for A. auricula was significantly lower for 0:4 (116 d) than for 4:0 (126 d). Then, the single bag yield and biological efficiency (BE) were highest at 1:3. Moreover, the nutrients and mineral elements of A. auricula cultivated in walnut sawdust were significantly higher than that of miscellaneous sawdust, expect for total sugar and protein, and the highest overall value was found at 1:3. Finally, the results of comprehensive evaluation by PCA showed that the D value was the highest when the substrate was 1:3 and the lowest when the substrate was 4:0. Therefore, the substrate ratio of 1:3 was the most suitable for the growth of A. auricula. In this study, the high yield and quality of A. auricula were cultivated by waste walnut sawdust, which provided a new way to utilize walnut sawdust.

The quantitative retrieval of the chlorophyll-a concentration is an important remote sensing method that is used to monitor the nutritional status of water bodies. The high spatial resolution of the Sentinel-2 MSI and its subdivision in the red-edge band highlight the characteristics of water chlorophyll-a, which is an important detection tool for assessing water quality parameters in plateau lakes. In this study, the Nine Plateau Lakes in the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau of China were selected as the study area. Using Sentinel-2 MSI transit images and in situ measured chlorophyll-a concentration as the data source, the chlorophyll-a concentrations of plateau lakes (CCAPLs) were investigated, and the surface temperatures of plateau lakes (STPLs) were retrieved to verify the hypothesis that the lake surface temperature could increase the chlorophyll-a concentration. By comparing feature importance using a random forest (RF), the Sentinel-2 MSI surface reflectance and in situ data were linearly fitted using four retrieval spectral indices with high feature importance, and the accuracy of the estimated concentration of chlorophyll-a was evaluated by monitoring station data in the same period. Then, Landsat-8 TIRS Band 10 data were used to retrieve the STPL with a single-channel temperature retrieval algorithm and to verify the correlation between the STPL and the CCAPL. The results showed that the retrievals of the CCAPL and the STPL were consistent with the actual situation. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the fifteenth normalized difference chlorophyll-a index (NDCI15) was 0.0249. When the CCAPL was greater than 0.05 mg/L and the STPL was within 28–34 °C, there was a positive linear correlation between the CCAPL and the STPL. These results will provide support for the remote sensing monitoring of eutrophication in plateau lakes and will contribute to the scientific and effective management of plateau lakes.

This paper focuses on the stability analysis of generalized neural networks with time-varying delays. First, a novel augmented Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) is constructed by introducing a couple of integral vectors. Second, by utilizing the novel augmented LKF and a generalized free-weighting-matrix integral inequality, two further stability criteria are presented in this paper. Third, a less conservative stability condition by refining the allowable delay set is introduced. Finally, the four well-known numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness and improvements of the proposed methods.

The boron (B) deficiency tolerance capacity of two grape materials, ‘Xishui-4’ (Vitis flexuosa) and ‘Crystal’ (V. vinifera × V. labrusca), were evaluated using a potted experiment in order to identify the B-use efficiency of grape and screen B-efficient grape resources. The sterile lines of two genotypes of grape were used as test materials, and a large number of test-tube seedlings were obtained through rapid propagation. The test-tube seedlings were acclimatization and transplanted, and the tested seedlings were treated with B stress after survival. In this experiment, the materials were cultured in nutrient solution, which contained 0.00 (B0), 0.25 (B1), and 0.50 (control) mg·L−1 B concentrations, and the two genotypes of grape seedlings were cultured in vitro. The results were counted after 60 days of culture. The results showed that the B deficiency significantly reduced the growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area, total root length, and dry biomass of the two genotypes, and the inhibition of ‘Crystal’ growth parameters was greater than that of ‘Xishui-4’. Moreover, the B deficiency also affected photosynthesis of the two genotypes, such as decreased leaf photosynthetic pigments, net photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular carbon dioxide concentration, and stomatal density. Interestingly, the decrease ranges of ‘Crystal’ were greater than those of ‘Xishui-4’, indicating that ‘Crystal’ photosynthesis was more susceptible to B deficiency. Under the control condition, the concentration and accumulation of B in ‘Crystal’ were significantly higher than those in ‘Xishui-4’. However, under the condition of B deficiency, the B concentration, accumulation amount, accumulation rate, utilization index, and tolerance index of ‘Xishui-4’ were higher than those of ‘Crystal’, and the B transport capacity of ‘Xishui-4’ was more stable, indicating that ‘Xishui-4’ had a better tolerance against B-deficient stress than ‘Crystal’ did. Therefore, ‘Xishui-4’ is a plant with strong adaptability to B deficiency stress, which can be used as B efficient grape resources and a genetic improvement of B efficient grape.

Biochars were produced from long-root Eichhornia crassipes at four temperatures: 200, 300, 400 and 500°C, referred to as LEC200, LEC300, LEC400 and LEC500, respectively. The sorption ability of lead, zinc, copper and cadmium from aqueous solutions by four kinds of biochars was investigated. All the biochars had lower values of CEC and higher values of pH. LEC500 was the best one to bind toxic metals which can be reflected in the results of SEM, BET and elemental analyser. It was also found that alkyl, carboxyl, phosphate and cyano groups in the biochars can play a role in binding metals. In addition, the sorption processes of four metals by the biochars in different metal concentration were all excellently represented by the pseudo-second-order model with all correlation coefficients R2 > 0.95. And the sorption processes of four metals in different temperatures could be described satisfactorily by the Langmuir isotherms. According to calculated results by the Langmuir equation, the maximum removal capacities of Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) at 298 K were 39.09 mg g−1, 45.40 mg g−1, 48.20 mg g−1 and 44.04 mg g−1, respectively. The positive value of the ΔH0 confirmed the adsorption process was endothermic and the negative value of ΔG0 confirmed the adsorption process was spontaneous. The sorption capacities were compared with several other lignocellulosic materials which implied the potential of long-root Eichhornia crassipes waste as an economic and excellent biosorbent for eliminating metal ions from contaminated waters.

Particle-associated bacteria (PAB) and free-living bacteria (FLB) from aquatic environments during phytoplankton blooms differ in their physical distance from algae. Both the interactions within PAB and FLB community fractions and their relationship with the surrounding environmental properties are largely unknown. Here, by using high-throughput sequencing and network-based analyses, we compared the community and network characteristics of PAB and FLB from a plateau lake during a Microcystis aeruginosa bloom. Results showed that PAB and FLB differed significantly in diversity, structure and microbial connecting network. PAB communities were characterized by highly similar bacterial community structure in different sites, tighter network connections, important topological roles for the bloom-causing M. aeruginosa and Alphaproteobacteria, especially for the potentially nitrogen-fixing (Pleomorphomonas) and algicidal bacteria (Brevundimonas sp.). FLB communities were sensitive to the detected environmental factors and were characterized by significantly higher bacterial diversity, less connectivity, larger network size and marginal role of M. aeruginosa. In both networks, covariation among bacterial taxa was extensive (>88% positive connections), and bacteria potentially affiliated with biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen (i.e., denitrification, nitrogen-fixation and nitrite-oxidization) were important in occupying module hubs, such as Meganema, Pleomorphomonas, and Nitrospira. These findings highlight the importance of considering microbial network interactions for the understanding of blooms.

The occurrence, removal and bioaccumulation of steroid estrogens such as the natural estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3), as well as the synthetic 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) were investigated in Dianchi Lake catchment, China. The results show that traditional secondary treatment processes in eight sewage treatment plants (STPs) of Kunming were not efficient enough to completely remove steroid estrogens, but ultraviolet (UV) photodegradation in advanced treatment displayed more effectively for the removal of the residual compounds. The amount of total steroid estrogens (∑SEs) discharged to Dianchi Lake catchment by the eight STPs was 35.8 g/day, in which STP-3 was the dominant source, accounting for 50.8%. Because of the pollution input from treated and untreated sewages, estrogens were widely detected in surface water and sediment samples collected from 21 inflow rivers of Dianchi Lake, 10 National Surface Water Quality Monitoring Sites of the lake itself and its unique outflow river, with the mean concentration of ∑SEs in the range of 5.3–798.2 ng/L (water) and 3.7–202.4 ng/g (dry weight, sediment), 1.5–39.2 ng/L (water) and 2.7–20.9 ng/g (sediment), and 4.2 ng/L (water) and 6.6 ng/g (sediment), respectively. Due to the continuous input of estrogens to Dianchi Lake from STPs and inflow rivers, present estrogen levels in various tissues of wild fish species sampled from the lake (2013) were higher than the values detected in the previous years (2009 and 2010). The bioaccumulation of steroid estrogens in wild fish species from different sampling sites was in the order of STP-5 > Dianchi Lake (2013) > Dianchi Lake (2010) ≈ Dianchi Lake (2009) ≫ field control > laboratory control, which is mainly affected by exposure concentrations. By employing risk quotient (RQ), it is found that eco-toxicological risk of steroid estrogens in Dianchi Lake catchment was in a sequence of 22 rivers > effluents of eight STPs > Dianchi Lake (2013) > Dianchi Lake (2010), and high RQs were found in EE2, which should be controlled preferentially in this catchment. Bamboo is a potential lignocellulosic biomass for the production of bioethanol because of its high cellulose and hemicelluloses content. In this research, ethanol organosolv pretreatment with dilute sulfuric acid as the catalyst was studied in order to enhance enzymatic saccharification of moso bamboo. The addition of 2% (w/w bamboo) dilute sulfuric acid in 75% ethanol had a particularly strong effect on fractionation of bamboo. It yielded a solids fraction containing 83.4% cellulose in the treated substrate. The cellulose conversion to glucose yield reached 77.1 to 83.4% after enzymatic hydrolysis of the solids fraction for 48 h at an enzyme loading of 15 FPU cellulase/g cellulose and 30 IU β-glucosidase/g cellulose. The enzymatic hydrolysis rate was significantly accelerated as the ethanol organosolv pretreatment time increased, reaching the highest enzymatic glucose yield of 83.4% after 48 h at 50 °C. The concentrations of fermentation inhibitors such as HMF (5-hydroxy-2-methyl furfural) and furfural were 0.96 g/L and 4.38 g/L in the spent liquor after the ethanol organosolv pretreatment, which were slightly lower than the concentrations quantified during H2SO4-water treatment. Spent liquor was diluted with water, and more than 87.2% of lignin in raw bamboo was recovered as ethanol organosolv lignin through the filtration process.

In this study, the molten salt hydrate of lithium bromide (LiBr) was utilized as a non-derivatizing cellulose dissolution solvent to prepare regenerated cellulose films for kraft pulp. The effects of LiBr concentrations (60, 62, and 65 wt %) and dissolving time (from 5 to 40 min with the interval of 5 min) on the structures and the properties of the films were investigated. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and cross-polarization magic-angle spinning carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS 13C NMR) characterizations verified the breakage of inter- and intra-cellulose hydrogen bonds during the regeneration, resulting in the disruption of the crystalline structure of cellulose. X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicated that the regeneration converted the polymorphism of cellulose from I to II as well as decreased its crystallinity. Ultraviolet-visible spectra (UV-Vis) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed the excellent optical transparency of the films to visible light due to the complete dissolution of cellulose fibers as well as the sufficient breaking of the inter- and intra-cellulose hydrogen bonds. In terms of tensile testing, tuning LiBr concentrations and dissolving time could increase the elongation at break and tensile strength of the films. The maximum elongation at break of 26% and tensile strength of 67 MPa were achieved when the films prepared in 65 wt % LiBr for 10 and 15 min, respectively. These results indicated the great potential of the cellulose films for packaging use.
