Abstract To improve the wettability of surfactants on bituminous coal and to explore its wettability and wettability mechanism on bituminous coal, taking the Sandaogou bituminous coal as an example, a single factor experiment was carried out first. Through contact angle and surface tension experiments, three surfactants with good wettability were selected from among the nine surfactants and mixed in equal proportions two by two to determine the optimal compounding method and compounding concentration. The experimental results show that the compounding of nonionic and anionic, nonionic and zwitterionic, anionic and zwitterionic surfactants can have synergistic effects and significantly improve the wettability of bituminous coal. Among them, the 0.5 wt% SDS + 0.5 wt% CAB-50 (R2) compound surfactant had the best wettability on bituminous coal, and the contact angle and surface tension were only 15.24° and 23.62 mN/m, respectively. The surface electrostatic potential values of each material molecule were calculated by Materials Studio software based on the quantum chemistry method, and correlation analysis was carried out with wettability. The results show that the surface electrostatic potentials of CDEA, SDS and CAB-50 were greater than those of water and bituminous coal, and the region of maximum negative electrostatic potential corresponded to oxygen atoms, which are easier to adsorb on bituminous coal and water molecules. Then, through molecular dynamics simulation, the interaction energy and the distribution of contributions along the Z-axis of the water/compound surfactant/bituminous coal system at equilibrium were investigated, and finally, a spray dust reduction test was carried out in the Sandaogou Coal Mine. The results showed that the 0.5 wt% SDS + 0.5 wt% CAB-50 compound solution can be used as a water molecule adsorption carrier, prompting more water molecules to be embedded into coal molecules, increasing the relative concentration of water molecules on the surface of bituminous coal, restricting the diffusion of water molecules, and greatly improving the wettability. After the addition of 0.5 wt% SDS + 0.5 wt% CAB-50 as a spray agent, the concentration of total dust at the driver's position decreased from 65.14 to 9.11 mg/m3, the concentration of exhaled dust decreased from 30.07 to 3.35 mg/m3, and the efficiency of total and exhaled dust reduction compared with that of pure water was 86.01% and 89.35%, respectively.

The diversified clean and high-value utilization of coal plays an important role in promoting the low-carbon sustainable development of China's coal industry, and the materialization of coal is one of the important ways to enhance the level of its clean and efficient utilization. In this study, lignite-based hard carbons (LHC) were prepared by high-temperature carbonization (1000−1600 ℃) method using Huating lignite as precursor, taking full advantage of lignite's aromatic ring structure, well-developed primary pores and abundant surface active groups. The formation mechanism and evolution behavior of graphite-like microcrystals and defect structures including amorphous carbon, nanopores, and surface functional groups in LHC was explored, while the influence of carbonization temperature on the microstructure of LHC was further revealed. The electrochemical performance of different LHC as anode for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) was also tested by galvanostatic charge/discharge, galvanostatic intermittent titration and cyclic voltammetry, the influence mechanism of microstructure on the electrochemical sodium storage performance of anode materials was explored, and the electrochemical sodium storage mechanism of LHC was eventually elucidated. The results show that graphite-like microcrystalline structure and defective structures such as amorphous carbon, nanopores, and oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups of LHC can be effectively regulated by adjusting the carbonization temperature. When the carbonization temperature was 1400 ℃, the LHC-1400 was rich in graphite-like microcrystals with reasonable layer spacing (0.371 nm), and also had appropriate amorphous carbon and nanopores with a specific surface area of 4.92 m2/g, and oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups including C—O, C=O, O—C=O, pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, graphitic-N. The LHC-1400 as anode for SIBs can deliver a high reversible capacity of 275 mAh/g, and has a reversible capacity of 111 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g with a capacity retention rate 96% after 200 cycles, which exhibits good rate performance and cycle stability. The excellent sodium storage performance of LHC is closely related to the functions and roles of their different microstructures. The graphite-like microcrystals with reasonable layer spacing in LHC can provide a transport channel for the rapid intercalation and de-intercalation of Na+ to provide capacity with intercalated sodium storage; the defect structures such as amorphous carbon, open nanopores, and oxygen/nitrogen-containing in LHC can provide sufficient active sites for Na+ storage to contribute capacity by adsorption, and a small amount of closed pores in LHC can provide sufficient space for the storage of Na+ and supply sodium storage capacity by pore filling. The “adsorption-insertion-filling” sodium storage methods in LHC are synergistic with each other to realize its efficient electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract Background Hesperidin is a citrus flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. However, its protective effects on bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs) exposed to oxidative stress have not been elucidated. Results In this study, we investigated the effects of hesperidin on H2O2-induced oxidative stress in bMECs and the underlying molecular mechanism. We found that hesperidin attenuated H2O2-induced cell damage by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, increasing catalase (CAT) activity, and improving cell proliferation and mitochondrial membrane potential. Moreover, hesperidin activated the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway by inducing the nuclear translocation of Nrf2 and the expression of its downstream genes NQO1 and HO-1, which are antioxidant enzymes involved in ROS scavenging and cellular redox balance. The protective effects of hesperidin were blocked by the Nrf2 inhibitor ML385, indicating that they were Nrf2 dependent. Conclusions Our results suggest that hesperidin could protect bMECs from oxidative stress injury by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway, suggesting that hesperidin as a natural antioxidant has positive potential as a feed additive or plant drug to promote the health benefits of bovine mammary. In the domain of gas pipeline operations, significant safety hazards prevail. This study delves into the triggering mechanisms behind gas pipeline leakage incidents, pinpoints key risk factors contributing to these occurrences, and proposes effective control measures. By classifying risk coupling forms associated with various accidents, the N-K model formula is utilized to assess the coupling degree of primary risk factors. The resultant coupling relationship is integrated into the University of California at Irvine NETwork (UCINET), forming a complex network model for quantitative analysis. Secondary risk factors' coupling degrees are measured, and the network's characteristic parameters are scrutinized. Noteworthy risk factors within the network include improper maintenance (A3), unclear or missing signage (C4), equipment aging and wear (B10), unauthorized occupation of ground space (C5), failure to implement rules and regulations (D3), and failure of electrical protection (B5). By controlling the above risk factors, disrupting the coupling process of risk factors, and blocking the transmission pathways of risk factors, the objective is to prevent leakage incidents and ensure the safe operation of gas pipelines.

Background: This research probed the relevant mechanism of miR-379-3p by regulating suppressor of cytokine signaling1 (SOCS1) in the processes of inflammation, oxidative stress, and angiogenesis in fat grafting. An increasing body of research indicates the involvement of miRNA/mRNA pathways in the process of fat transplantation, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Results: miR-379-3p knockdown improved the survival rate of adipocytes, promoted adipose tissue angiogenesis, and reduced inflammation and oxidative stress levels. miR-379-3p targeted SOCS1. SOCS1 upregulation improved adipose tissue survival and angiogenesis and reduced inflammation. miR-379-3p affected adipose tissue survival, angiogenesis, and inflammation by targeting SOCS1 expression. This study investigates the effect of altitude on the fatty acid composition of pasture grass, yak milk, and yak ghee on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, aiming to understand how environmental factors influence the nutritional quality of these products. Samples were collected from four different altitudes and analyzed for fatty acid profiles using gas chromatography. The analysis reveals that higher altitudes are associated with an increased prevalence of beneficial unsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2n6c). These findings highlight the significant influence of altitude on yak lipid metabolism, ultimately enhancing the nutritional value of dairy products. This adaptation not only supports the health and resilience of yaks, but also provides vital nutritional benefits to residents in high-altitude regions. The research underscores the importance of further investigations to optimize dairy production practices, ensuring improved food security and health outcomes for residents of the plateau.

Abstract The functions and molecular mechanisms of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in reproduction have been widely studied at present. However, lncRNA regulating hormone synthesis in ovarian follicular granulosa cells has not been sufficiently studied. Our previous research demonstrated that lncRNA Gm2044 could promote estradiol synthesis in follicular granulosa cells. In this study, we identified 21 binding proteins of lncRNA Gm2044 in ovarian follicles using comprehensive identification of RNA-binding proteins by mass spectrometry (ChIRP-MS). RNA immunoprecipitation (RNA IP) and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) confirmed that lncRNA Gm2044 can interact with eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (EEF2) protein. Furthermore, we constructed lncRNA Gm2044 knockout mice using the CRISPR/Cas9 method. Although the follicular development and fertility of female lncRNA Gm2044 knockout mice were not affected, the serum estradiol concentration in female lncRNA Gm2044 knockout mice significantly decreased. Western blotting and ELISA revealed that lncRNA Gm2044 may promote the binding of EEF2 to Nr5a1 mRNA and then enhance the Nr5a1 mRNA translation, and the upregulated NR5A1 protein can strengthen estradiol synthesis. To determine the potential signaling pathway of lncRNA Gm2044 regulating estradiol synthesis, transcriptome sequencing was performed for ovaries of adult lncRNA Gm2044 knockout mice, which identified 565 significant up-regulated genes and 303 significant down-regulated genes, which were then analyzed with Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and validated by molecular experiments. Understanding how lncRNA Gm2044/EEF2 protein regulates estradiol synthesis will help treat estrogen-related reproductive diseases.

Abstract Photothermal materials have gained considerable attention in the field of anti‐/de‐icing due to its environmental friendliness and energy saving. However, it is always significantly challenging to obtain solar thermal materials with hierarchical structure and simultaneously demonstrate both the ultra‐long icing delay ability and the superior photothermal de‐icing ability. Here, a photothermal icephobic MOF‐based micro and nanostructure surface (MOF‐MNS) is presented, which consists of micron groove structure and fluorinated MOF nanowhiskers. The optimal MOF‐M250NS can achieve solar absorption of over 98% and produce a high temperature increment of 65.5 °C under 1‐sun illumination. Such superior photothermal‐conversion mechanism of MOF‐M250NS is elucidated in depth. In addition, the MOF‐M250NS generates an ultra‐long icing delay time of ≈3960 s at −18 °C without solar illumination, achieving the longest delay time, which isn't reported before. Due to its excellent solar‐to‐heat conversation ability, accumulated ice and frost on MOF‐M250NS can be rapidly melted within 720 s under 1‐sun illumination and it also holds a high de‐icing rate of 5.8 kg m−2 h−1. MOF‐M250NS possesses the versatility of mechanical robustness, chemical stability, and low temperature self‐cleaning, which can synergistically reinforce the usage of icephobic surfaces in harsh conditions.

Abstract This study was conducted to determine the response of the reproductive hormones and the mTOR/AKT/PI3K pathway in the ovaries of postpartum dairy cows with dietary rumen-protected glucose (RPG). Twelve Holstein cows were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 6/group): the control group (CT) and the RPG group. Blood samples were collected on d 1, 7, and 14 after calving for the gonadal hormone assay. The expression of the gonadal hormones receptors and PI3K/mTOR/AKT pathways were detected using RT-PCR and Western blot. The RPG addition increased the plasma LH, E2, and P4 concentrations on d 14 after calving and upregulated the mRNA and protein expressions of the ERα, ERβ, 17β-HSD, FSHR, LHR, and CYP17A1 but downregulated StAR expression. Immunohistochemical analysis identified higher expressions of the FSHR and LHR in the ovaries of RPG-fed cows compared to CT cows. Furthermore, the protein expressions of p-AKT/AKT and p-mTOR/mTOR were significantly increased in the ovaries of RPG-fed cows compared to the CT group, but the addition of RPG did not alter the protein expression of p-PI3K/PI3K. In conclusion, the current results indicated that dietary RPG supplementation regulated gonadotropin secretion and stimulated expression of hormone receptors and the mTOR/AKT pathway in the ovaries of early postpartum dairy cows. RPG may be beneficial for the recovery of ovarian activity in post-calving dairy cows.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in the medical field, yet the use of botulinum toxin type A has remained uninterrupted. Plastic surgeons must carefully consider the timing of administering botulinum toxin type A to patients who have recovered from COVID-19.MethodsA questionnaire survey was conducted among patients who had contracted and recovered from SARS-CoV-2 within a month. The survey aimed to investigate various indicators in patients who had received botulinum toxin A injections at the same site before and after their infection, including pain scores and allergic reactions and the occurrence of complications.ResultsThe pain scores of patients who contracted SARS-CoV-2 infection between 14-21 days post-infection exhibited significant variation from previous injections. However, patients who contracted the infection between 22-28 days post-infection did not exhibit significant variation from previous injections. Furthermore, the incidence of allergic reactions and complications following botulinum toxin injection within one month after contracting the infection did not significantly differ from that observed prior to infection.ConclusionAdministering botulinum toxin type A three weeks after COVID-19 recovery is a justifiable and comparatively secure approach.

Selenium (Se) is an essential nutrient with multiple health benefits to humans and animals. Cattle generally require dietary Se supplementation to meet their daily requirements. The two main forms of dietary Se in cattle are organic Se and inorganic Se. Data comparing the health and productivity effects of organic Se and inorganic Se on cattle are still insufficient, and it is necessary to conduct more research to evaluate the bioavailability, nutritional value, deposition, and body functions of Se sources in different breeds and physiological stages of cattle raised in areas with different Se levels. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of organic and inorganic sources of Se on plasma biochemical indices, Se bioavailability, deposition in body tissues and organs, growth performance, antioxidant capacity and meat quality of beef cattle raised in Se-deficient areas. Fifteen Chinese Xiangzhong Black beef cattle with an average weight of 254.5 ± 8.85 kg were assigned to three dietary groups. The three groups were fed the same basal ration and supplemented with either an inorganic [sodium selenite (SS)] or organic [selenomethionine (SM) or Se-enriched yeast (SY)] source of Se (0.1 mg/kg dry matter) for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, three cattle from each group were randomly selected and slaughtered, and samples were collected from tissues and organs for analysis. The results revealed that growth performance, slaughter performance, Se content of tissues and organs, meat quality characteristics including chemical composition, pH45min, pH24h, drip loss, and cooking losses did not differ (p > 0.05) due to supplementation of the different organic and inorganic sources of Se. This paper considers a simplified three dimensional Ericksen-Leslie System for nematic liquid crystal flows in the unbounded domain $ \Omega: = \mathbb R^+\times \mathbb R^2 $ or the smooth bounded domain $ \Omega $. The hydrodynamic system consists of the Navier-Stokes type equations for the fluid velocity coupled with a convective Ginzburg-Landau type equation for the averaged molecular orientation. We first establish the global existence of Sobolev regular solution with finite energies in Sobolev space $ H^{s}(\Omega)\times H^{s}(\Omega) $, where the index $ s $ of the Sobolev space can be any large fixed integer, but $ s\neq+\infty $. Then we give an asymptotic expansions of a family of Sobolev regularity solutions for such system in $ \Omega $.

Ewes undergo complex metabolic changes during pregnancy. Understanding the specific process of these changes is a necessary prerequisite in ewes for regulating and intervening in order to maintain pregnancies. However, there have been relatively few studies on the specific changes that occur in nutritional metabolism in pregnant ewes during early gestation, especially for some landrace ewes in highly cold areas. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) elucidate the changes in metabolites and microbial communities in pregnant ewes during early gestation using metabolomics and 16S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) amplicon sequencing approaches, and to (2) discover novel early pregnancy-induced biomarkers in the blood and faeces. Rams were placed together with ewes on D0 and removed on D45. During early gestation, blood and faecal samples were collected from ewes in a highly cold area for analysing the metabolites and microbial communities; these were retrospectively classified as the early gestation pregnant (EP) ewe group or the nonpregnant (NP) ewe group based on the lambing status recorded during the expected delivery period. The differences in the plasma biochemical parameters, plasma metabolites, and faecal microbial communities of pregnant and nonpregnant ewes were characterised. The GC, IL-6, O-acetyl-l-serine, L-glutamine, and 6-acetamido-2-oxohexanoic acid were screened out as potential biomarkers for evaluating the occurrence of early pregnancy. These novel early pregnancy-induced metabolites discovered in ewes might allow for the development of technologies to detect early pregnancies in sheep in highly cold areas.

The study show the influence of coal mining on pillar under a repeated mining, in a close coal seam group, the fracture and instability process and influence mechanism of fracture development on the oxidation of coal pillars. In this paper, FLAC3D numerical simulation software is used to simulate the dynamic evolution characteristics of stress, displacement of the upper coal pillar. The results show that 1) The theoretical length of the fracture along the strike of the upper coal pillar is obtained by establishing the mechanical model of the upper coal pillar, which is consistent with the numerical simulation results. 3) In this paper, according to the dynamic evolution characteristics of displacement and stress on the coal pillar, the coal pillar is divided into the “step subsidence area”, “fracture compaction area” and “reverse stress area”, and the high risk area of the coal spontaneous combustion is determined.

Improving the quality of 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) epitaxial layers to reduce the leakage current of 4H-SiC based high-power devices is a long-standing issue in the development of 4H-SiC homoepitaxy. In this work, we compare the effect of different type of dislocations, and discriminate the effect of dislocation lines and dislocation-related pits on the leakage current of 4H-SiC by combining molten-KOH etching and the tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) measurements. It is found that both the dislocation lines of threading dislocations (TDs) and the TD-related pits increase the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC. The dislocation lines of TDs exert more significant effect on the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC, which gives rise to the nonuniform distribution of reverse leakage current throughout the TD-related pits. Due to the different Burgers vectors of TDs, the effect of TDs on the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC increases in the order to threading edge dislocation (TED), threading screw dislocation (TSD) and threading mixed dislocation (TMD). Basal plane dislocations (BPDs) are also found to slightly increase the reverse leakage current, with the leakage current mainly concentrated at the core of the BPD. Compared to the effect of TDs, the effect of BPDs on the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC is negligible. Our work indicates that reducing the density of TDs, especially TMDs and TSDs, is key to improve the quality of 4H-SiC epitaxial layers and reduce the reverse leakage current of 4H-SiC based high -power devices.

Manipulation of perinatal diets, such as supplementing feed with rumen-protected glucose (RPG), has been positively regarded as a strategy to improve milking performance. This study was conducted to assess the effects of RPG on the fermentation profiles, resident microbiota and mucosal immunity in the cecum. Ten Holstein dairy cows were randomly assigned to either a 25 g/kg RPG diet (DM basis) or a 11 g/kg coating fat diet (control, CON). Compared with the CON group, the acetate-to-propionate ratio was lower in the RPG group. Gene expression analysis indicated that RPG supplementation tended to upregulate the expression of Na+/H+ hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) (P = 0.076). RPG supplementation downregulated the expression of genes involved in self-rehabilitation such as matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1), MMP3, MMP9 and MMP13. Additionally, the mRNA expression of genes involved in immunity including Toll-like receptors (TLR4, TLR6 and TLR7) and proinflammatory cytokines (immune interferon gamma [IFNG] and interleukins interleukin 17A [IL17F], IL17A, IL22), was downregulated by RPG supplementation. Nonetheless, no differences existed in the bacterial copy number and beta diversity between the 2 groups. Overall, supplementation with RPG would probably cause a shift towards propionate production in the cecal digesta, and promote the immune homeostasis of the cecal mucosa in transition dairy cows. Our results extended the basic understanding of RPG supplementation and utilization in transition dairy cows in terms of host microbe interplay in the cecum.

Most of the offshore projects will be impacted by storm surge, especially in the sea area where typhoons are frequent, and storm surge disasters are inevitable. The establishment of a theoretical distribution model of the number of typhoon occurrences and random waves is of great theoretical and practical significance for the study of the number of storm surge impacts and damage to marine engineering as well as the safety evaluation of offshore engineering. Based on stochastic process theory, this paper discusses the effects of the number of typhoon occurrences and typhoon intensity on wave displacement and water level by constructing a compound Poisson process model of typhoon frequency and typhoon intensity. The limitations of using typhoon intensity and wave height as random variables in the marine environment are improved. The average cumulative damage, reliability, and average service life of marine works were analyzed by marine works reliability analysis and a compound Poisson process of the number of storm surge impacts on marine works and the damage caused to marine works by each impact. The results show that the statistical theoretical model and reliability analysis of the storm surge hazard factors based on the stochastic process covers the original extreme value statistical distribution model, and can determine the parameters in the model according to different thresholds in line with the objective facts, and then deduce the design return level, while the deduced return level still has a certain degree of reliability in the case of short or missing data. Therefore, the stochastic process-based model of the imputed level of design parameters for the marine environment provides a new option for marine engineering design and risk management.

In this paper, a novel microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on a single longitudinal mode Brillouin laser achieved by parity time (PT) symmetry mode selection is proposed, and its unparalleled ultra-narrow bandwidth as low as to sub-kHz together with simple and agile tuning performance is experimentally verified. The Brillouin fiber laser ring resonator is cascaded with a PT symmetric system to achieve this MPF. Wherein, the Brillouin laser resonator is excited by a 5 km single mode fiber to generate Brillouin gain, and the PT symmetric system is configured with Polarization Beam Splitter (PBS) and polarization controller (PC) to achieve PT symmetry. Thanks to the significant enhancement of the gain difference between the main mode and the edge mode when the polarization state PT symmetry system breaks, a single mode oscillating Brillouin laser is generated. Through the selective amplification of sideband modulated signals by ultra-narrow linewidth Brillouin single mode laser gain, the MPF with ultra-narrow single passband performance is obtained. By simply tuning the central wavelength of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) pumped laser to adjust the Brillouin oscillation frequency, the gain position of the Brillouin laser can be shifted, thereby achieving flexible tunability. The experimental results indicate that the MPF proposed in this paper achieves a single pass band narrow to 72 Hz and the side mode rejection ratio of more than 18 dB, with a center frequency tuning range of 0–20 GHz in the testing range of vector network analysis, which means that the MPF possesses ultra high spectral resolution and enormous potential application value in the domain of ultra fine microwave spectrum filtering such as radar imaging and electronic countermeasures.

Abstract Background To investigate the efficacy and safety of aerosol inhalation of recombinant human interferon α1b (IFNα1b) injection for noninfluenza viral pneumonia. Methods One hundred sixty-four patients with noninfluenza viral pneumonia were divided into IFNα1b and control groups. The IFNα1b group received routine treatment + aerosol inhalation of recombinant human IFNα1b injection (50 μg × 2 injections, bid). The control group received routine treatment + IFN analog (two injections, bid). Overall response rate (ORR) of five kinds clinical symptoms. Further outcomes were daily average score and the response rate of each of the symptoms above. Results A total of 163 patients were included in the full analysis set (FAS) and 151 patients were included in the per-protocol set (PPS). After 7 days of treatment, ORR of clinical symptoms was higher in IFNα1b group than that in control group for both the FAS and PPS. Moreover, after 7 days of treatment, the daily score of three efficacy indexes including expectoration, respiratory rate, and pulmonary rales were improved. The ORRs for expectoration and pulmonary rales were higher in the IFNα1b group than in the control group (P 0.05). The incidence of adverse events was 6.5% (n = 5) in IFNα1b group and 3.5% (n = 3) in control group (P > 0.05). Conclusion Aerosol inhalation of recombinant human IFNα1b is safe and it can improve the clinical symptoms of noninfluenza viral pneumonia.

Abstract Background Maternal undernutrition programs fetal energy homeostasis and increases the risk of metabolic disorders later in life. This study aimed to identify the signs of hepatic metabolic programming in utero and during the juvenile phase after intrauterine undernutrition during midgestation. Methods Fifty-three pregnant goats were assigned to the control (100% of the maintenance requirement) or restricted (60% of the maintenance requirement from day 45 to day 100 of midgestation and realimentation thereafter) group to compare hepatic energy metabolism in the fetuses (day 100 of gestation) and kids (postnatal day 90). Results Undernutrition increased the glucagon concentration and hepatic hexokinase activity, decreased the body weight, liver weight and hepatic expression of G6PC, G6PD, and PGC1α mRNAs, and tended to decrease the hepatic glycogen content and ACOX1 mRNA level in the dams. Maternal undernutrition decreased the growth hormone (GH) and triglyceride concentrations, tended to decrease the body weight and hepatic hexokinase activity, increased the hepatic PCK1, PCK2 and PRKAA2 mRNAs levels and glucose-6-phosphatase activity, and tended to increase the hepatic PRKAB1 and CPT1α mRNAs levels in the male fetuses. In the restricted female fetuses, the hepatic hexokinase activity and G6PC mRNA level tended to be increased, but PKB1 mRNA expression was decreased and the ACACA, CPT1α, NR1H3 and STK11 mRNA levels tended to be decreased. Maternal undernutrition changed the hepatic metabolic profile and affected the metabolic pathway involved in amino acid, glycerophospholipid, bile acid, purine, and saccharide metabolism in the fetuses, but not the kids. Additionally, maternal undernutrition increased the concentrations of GH and cortisol, elevated the hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, and tended to decrease the hepatic glycogen content in the male kids. No alterations in these variables were observed in the female kids. Conclusions Maternal undernutrition affects the metabolic status in a sex- and stage-specific manner by changing the metabolic profile, expression of genes involved in glucose homeostasis and enzyme activities in the liver of the fetuses. The changes in the hormone levels in the male fetuses and kids, but not the female offspring, represent a potential sign of metabolic programming.

Metal transporters, including divalent metal-ion transporter-1 (DMT1), Zrt-/Irt-like protein 8 and 14 (ZIP8 and ZIP14), and ferroportin-1 (FPN1), reportedly participate in cellular cadmium (Cd) uptake, but those in farm animals remain unclarified. This study aimed to examine the growth, plasma biochemical indices, Cd accumulation, and expression of metal transporter genes in the liver, kidney, and muscle of goats exposed to rice paddies contaminated with different levels of Cd. Twenty-four goats were randomly assigned across three dietary treatments: 0.23, 0.63, and 1.07 mg of Cd/kg of dry matter (DM) for 60 days. The results showed that dietary Cd exposure increased (p < 0.05) both Cd accumulation and the mRNA expressions of metal transporter genes (DMT1, ZIP, and FPN1) in the liver and kidney but not in the muscle, suggesting dietary Cd exhibited different deposition rates between goat liver, kidney, and muscle. These outcomes suggest that high levels of dietary Cd stimulated the expression of metal transporter genes and thereby enhanced the uptake and accumulation of Cd in the goat liver and kidney. As such, higher Cd concentrations in the liver and kidney observed with Cd diets could be partly explained by upregulation of metal transport genes expression.

In order to study the dynamic change law of the porosity of the compacted broken coal under different axial stress loading, based on the environment of the broken and compacted coal in the gob, aiming at the influence of the porosity on the spontaneous combustion of the coal, combined with the fractal theory, the fractal model of the porosity of the broken coal is established. A self-designed “testing device for permeability evolution and spontaneous combustion characteristics of crushed coal under pressure” is used to carry out axial loading test on selected coal samples in the gob. By comparing and analyzing the calculated results of void dynamic evolution model and experimental data, it is found that the relative error of void dynamic evolution model is between 2.8% and 6.2%, which meets the engineering needs. According to the stress-strain curve, initial accumulation state parameters, fractal dimension of initial crushing, and particle size distribution, the change of porosity under different compacted conditions can be predicted by the model, which has certain significance for identifying the change of compacted broken coal porosity and analyzing the process of coal spontaneous combustion and oxidation.

The dual stress of reduced feed intake and increased milk yield in dairy cows early postpartum results in a negative energy balance. Rumen-protected glucose (RPG) has been reported to replenish energy, increase milk yield, and improve gut health. However, early postpartum cows often develop an insulin resistance, implying that RPG may not be well utilized and increased milk production may increase the liver’s fat oxidization burden. This study aimed to investigate the effects of RPG on the hepatic oxidative/antioxidative status and protein profile. Starting 7 d before expected calving, six pairs of cows were supplemented with rumen-protected glucose (RPG, n = 6) or with an equal amount of rumen-protecting coating fat (CON, n = 6). Liver samples were obtained from 10 cows 14 d after calving (d 14). Concentration of malondialdehyde and activity of glutathione peroxidase were increased and the activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase tended to increase in the livers of the RPG cows compared to the CON cows. The revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (RQUICKI) was decreased by RPG, but triacylglycerol concentration in liver was increased by RPG supplementation. The overall profiles of hepatic proteins were similar between CON and RPG. A partial least square regression was conducted to identify the proteins associated with liver lipidosis, oxidative stress, and antioxidative capacity. The top twenty proteins, according to their variable importance value, were selected for metabolic pathway enrichment analysis. Eighteen enriched KEGG pathways were identified, including metabolism, the citrate cycle, propanoate metabolism, the peroxisome, and type II diabetes mellitus. Our study showed that RPG supplementation reduced insulin sensitivity but increased the liver triglyceride concentration and the oxidative stress in early postpartum cows. Liver proteins related to lipidosis, oxidative stress, and antioxidative capacity, were positively associated with the glutamine metabolism, citric acid cycle, peroxisome, and type II diabetes pathways, which may indicate an increased risk of liver metabolic disorders caused by RPG supplementation in early postpartum cows.

SiC crystal is an excellent substrate material for high power electronic devices and high-frequency electronic devices. Being cost-effective and defect-free are the two biggest challenges at present. For the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth of a SiC single crystal, SiC powder is used as the source material, which determines the cost and the quality of the crystal. In this paper, we propose a new design in which graphite blocks are substituted for the non-sublimated SiC powder. Temperature distribution in the SiC powder, the evolution of the SiC powder, and the vapor transport are investigated by using finite element calculations. With the addition of graphite blocks, the utilization and sublimation rate of SiC powder is higher. In addition, the reverse vapor transport above the SiC powder is eliminated. This design provides a new idea to reduce the cost of SiC crystals in industrialization.

Tetracycline (TC) contamination in water has progressively exacerbated the environmental crisis. It is urgent to develop a feasible method to solve this pollution in water. However, polluted water often contains oil. This paper reported a glass fiber (FG)-assisted polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hybrid membrane with dual functions: high TC degradation efficiency in emulsion and oil-water separation. It can meet the catalytic degradation of tetracycline in complex water. This membrane was decorated by coating the glass fiber with PVDF solution containing hydrophilic graphene oxide hybridized NH2-MIL-101(Fe) particles. Moreover, due to its strong mechanical strength enhanced by the glass fiber, it can be reused as TC degradation catalysts for dozens of times without cracking. Thanks to the hydrophobicity of PVDF and the surface pore size of MOFs, the prepared membrane showed a good oil-water separation performance. Besides, the hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) improved the membrane’s anti-fouling performance, allowing it to be reused as the separation membrane. Therefore, the outstanding stability and recoverability of the membrane make it as a fantastic candidate material for large-scale removal of TC as well as oil-water separation application.

Several researchers have testified that feeding with diets high in rice grain induces subacute ruminal acidosis and increases the risk of gastrointestinal inflammation. However, whether diets high in rice grain affect spleen growth and related molecular events remains unknown. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding a high-concentrate (HC) diet based on rice on the growth and microRNA expression profiles in goat spleen. Sixteen Liuyang black goats were used as an artiodactyl model and fed an HC diet for five weeks. Visceral organ weight, LPS (lipopolysaccharide) concentration in the liver and spleen, and microRNA expression were analyzed. The results showed that feeding an HC diet increased the heart and spleen indexes and decreased the liver LPS concentration (p < 0.05). In total, 596 microRNAs were identified, and twenty-one of them were differentially expressed in the spleens of goats fed with the HC diet. Specifically, several microRNAs (miR-107, miR-512, miR-51b, miR-191, miR-296, miR-326, miR-6123 and miR-433) were upregulated. Meanwhile, miR-30b, miR-30d, miR-1468, miR-502a, miR-145, miR-139, miR-2284f, miR-101 and miR-92a were downregulated. Additionally, their target gene CPPED1, CDK6, CCNT1 and CASP7 expressions were inhibited (p < 0.05). These results indicated that the HC diet promoted the growth of the heart and spleen. The HC diet also regulated the expression of miR-326, miR-512-3p, miR-30b, miR-30d, miR-502a and their target genes (CPPED1, CDK6 and CCNT1) related to the enhancement of splenocyte proliferation. The HC diet also modulated the expression of miR-15b-5p, miR-1468 and miR-92a, related to the suppression of splenocyte apoptosis.

Four levels of Momordica charantia polysaccharide (MCP) supplements (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.6 mg/ml) were designed to investigate the effects of MCP on ruminal fermentation and cellulolytic bacteria in vitro. The pH, ammonia-N (NH3-N) and volatile fatty acids (VFA) were measured at 6, 24, 48 h, whilst the cellulolytic bacteria population was determined at 6 and 24 h. The 0.6 mg/ml MCP inclusion decreased the theoretical maximum of gas production and the half-life. The NH3-N concentration was decreased by MCP at all doses at 24 h. The MCP inclusion increased the concentration of total VFA at 24 and 48 h and the acetate to propionate ratio, the molar proportion of isovalerate at 6 h, while decreased that of isobutyrate at 24 h and that of isovalerate, valerate at 24 and 48 h, respectively. The relative abundances of Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens were decreased at 6 h, while that of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens was increased at all times of incubation and that of Fibrobacter succinogenes reached the greatest value at 0.6 mg/ml MCP supplementation at 24 h. This study demonstrated that the MCP had the ability to enhance the total VFA production, modulate the rumen fermentation pathway and influence the number of cellulolytic bacteria population.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Momordica charantia saponin (MCS) on ruminal fermentation of maize stover and abundance of selected microbial populations in vitro. Five levels of MCS supplements (0, 0.01, 0.06, 0.30, 0.60 mg/mL) were tested. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of a dietary rumen-protected glucose (RPG) addition on uterine involution through the analysis of an insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and associated pathways in the post-natal endometrium. Twelve Holstein cows were assigned equally to two groups: a control group (CT) and an RPG group (200 g of RPG per cow per day). The plasma content of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) was determined by using the ELISA method. Expressions of IGF members, the matrix metalloproteinase, protein kinase B (AKT)/mechanistic target of rapamycin complex1 (mTOR) signaling pathway, and cell proliferation factors (proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki67) were detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence, respectively. The results showed that the positive cells of PCNA and Ki67 were increased in the endometrium of RPG versus CT cows. The RPG addition significantly increased the plasma IGF1 level 14 d after delivery. The mRNA expressions of the IGF family members (IGF1, IGF2, type 1 IGF receptor (IGF1R) and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP1, IGFBP2, IGFBP4 and IGFBP5)) were upregulated, and mRNA expressions of matrix metalloproteinase MMP3 and MMP9 were downregulated in cows from the RPG group compared with the CT group. Meanwhile, the protein expressions of IGF1, IGF2, IGF1R, IGFBP1 and IGFBP4 were upregulated in cows from the RPG group compared with the CT group. Immunohistochemical analysis identified a positive response for IGF1R and IGF2R in the endometrium of RPG versus CT cows. Furthermore, the RPG supplementation increased the protein expressions of phosphorylated (p)-AKT to total AKT and p-mTOR to total mTOR ratio in the endometrium. The current results indicated that the RPG supplementation promoted the proliferation of endometrial cells by stimulating the IGFs and mTOR/AKT pathway in the early post-natal endometrium of dairy cows.

Background:. Autologous fat is considered as an ideal material for soft-tissue augmentation in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The primary drawback of autologous fat grafting is the high absorption rate, thus fat retention is considered as an essential indicator. There are several researches about the factors that can influence fat retention, including centrifugation and cannula size. However, rheological models of cannula during liposuction are limited. This research focuses on the effects of cannulas with diameters of 2 mm and 2.5 mm on fat retention, which is based on a rheological simulation of inlet pressure and maximum velocity. Experiments on mice were also conducted to confirm the result from the simulation. Methods:. A simulation was conducted with the physical parameters of the adipose tissue. Human lipoaspirate samples were obtained from patients by liposuction through cannulas of different diameters and were transferred into subcutaneous tissue of nude mice, a part of which were used in viscosity and density measurement. Graft retention was measured and fat quality was assessed through histologic analysis after 6 months. Results:. Viscosity and density of the fat tissue had significant effects on fat retention. The 2.5 mm diameter cannula had significantly lower inlet pressure and maximum velocity and thus led to higher graft retention, but oil cystic nodules appeared meanwhile. Conclusions:. Cannulas with larger diameters have lower inlet pressure and maximum velocity during the liposuction process, which further influences the viability of adipocytes and adipose stem cells and thus has larger fat graft retention. This research built a mathematical model with less bias than in vivo experiments and provides a general way for analyzing the outcome of a liposuction precisely, which adds to the data for cannula optimization.

Enteric methane emission is not only a source of energy loss in ruminants, but also a potent contributor to greenhouse gas production. To identify the nature and timing of interventions to reduce methane emissions requires knowledge of temporal kinetics of methane emissions during animal husbandry. Accordingly, a mathematical model was developed to investigate the pattern of enteric methane emissions after feeding in dairy cows. The model facilitated estimation of total enteric methane emissions (V, g) produced by the residual substrate (V1, g) and newly ingested feed (V2, g). The model was fitted to the 10 h methane emission patterns after morning feeding of 16 non-lactating dairy cows with various body weights (BW), and the obtained parameters were used to predict the kinetics of 24 h methane emission for each animal. The rate of methane emission (g/h) reached a maximum within 1 to 2 h after feeding, followed by a gradual post-prandial decline to a basal value before the next feeding. The model satisfactorily fitted curves for each cow according to the criterion of goodness-of-fit, and provided biological descriptions for fluctuations in methane emissions based on basal V1 and feeding V2 in response to the changes in BW and dry matter intake (DMI) of different dairy cows. The basal V1 and feeding V2 are probably maintained by slow- and readily-degradable substrates, respectively. The former contributed at least 0.6 of methane production. In summary, the model provides a means to separate basal V1 and feeding V2 within V, and can be used to predict 24 h emission from a single feeding period.

In this paper, montmorillonite inhibitors modified with polyhydroxy functional groups by gluconic acid (GA) were successfully prepared. The particle size distribution, composition, surface functional groups, and pyrolysis characteristics of the pure montmorillonite powders (Mt) and the gluconic acid modified powders (G-Mt) were analyzed by using a laser particle analyzer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetry−differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), respectively. The suppression effect of Mt and G-Mt on the 9.5% methane−air premixed gas was tested in a 20 L spherical explosion device and a 5 L pipeline experimental system. The results show that G-Mt displays a much better suppression property than that of Mt. The optimal explosion suppression effect concentration of Mt or G-Mt powders is about 0.25 g·L−1. In this concentration, for G-Mt, the maximum explosion pressure declined by 26.7%, the maximum rate of pressure rise declined by 74.63%, and the time for the flame front to reach the top of the pipe was delayed by 242.5%. On the basis of the experimental data, the better suppression effect of G-Mt than Mt might be attributed to the presence of more hydroxyl groups on the surface.

This study evaluated the effects of alkyl polyglycoside (APG), which is a non-ionic surfactant, on lactation performance, nutrient digestibility and blood metabolites in dairy cows. Twenty dairy cows were randomly divided into four groups and fed a basal diet that included pelleted concentrate, distillers grains, and fresh limpograss. The four treatments included 0, 5.5, 11 and 22 mL APG per kg of pelleted concentrate on a dry matter basis; treatments were defined as APG0, APG5.5, APG11, and APG22, respectively. Dry matter intake was not affected by APG supplementation. There was an increase in milk yield (from 13.96 to 16.71 kg/day) and increases in milk fat (quadratic, p = 0.04), protein (quadratic, p = 0.10), and lactose concentrations (linear, p = 0.07) with increasing APG supplementation. In addition, APG supplementation increased (p ≤ 0.03) the milk fat, protein, solid non-fat, and total solid yields, while the lactose yield increased (linear, p = 0.01) as the APG level increased. Dietary APG supplementation had no effect on nutrient digestibility and blood metabolites. It was concluded that the addition of APG at doses up to 22 mL/kg of pelleted concentrate had positive effects on the milk composition in dairy cows.

This study examined the effects of a high-dose Saccharomyces cerevisiae inoculant alone or jointly with Lactobacillus plantarum on nutrient preservation, fermentation quality, and aerobic stability of sweet corn stalk silage. Fresh stalks (231 g dry matter (DM)/kg) were chopped and subjected to the following treatments: (1) deionized water (Uninoculated; U); (2) S. cerevisiae at 1 × 108 cfu/g of fresh forage (S); and (3) S. cerevisiae at 1 × 108 cfu/g plus L. plantarum at 1 × 105 cfu/g (SL). Treated stalks were ensiled in 5-litre laboratory silos for 30, 60, and 90 day. The S and SL silages had a greater (p < 0.001) pH and greater crude protein, ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, and ethanol contents at all three ensiling periods than the U silage. Acetate, propionate and volatile fatty acids in the S and SL silages after 30 and 90 day of ensiling were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the U silage, but they were lower (p < 0.05) in the S and SL silages than in the U silage after 60 day. The lactate and V-score of the S and SL silages were lower (p < 0.001) than those of the U silage at all three ensiling periods. Compared with the U group, the aerobic stability of the S silage after 90 day of ensiling decreased (p < 0.05), and the aerobic stability of the SL silage was unaffected (p > 0.05). Overall, the quality of sweet corn stalk silage was not improved by inoculation with 108 cfu/g of S. cerevisiae alone or in combination with 1 × 105 cfu/g of L. plantarum.

Nutritional status during mid-gestation is often ignored under extensive husbandry. This study aimed to examine the effect of maternal undernutrition during mid-gestation on kid meat production under an extensive system. Twenty-seven goats (45 ± 3 d of gestation) were randomly assigned to an unrestricted group (100% of nutrient requirements), or a restricted group (60% of nutrient requirements from 45 to 100 d of gestation, and then re-alimented to 100%). Among the offspring, 16 eligible kids (eight per treatment) were selected, based on birth type and survival, and were harvested to evaluate the meat yield, quality, and composition at 90 d after birth. Maternal undernutrition reduced the body weight and size, average daily gain and hot carcass weight of the kids (p < 0.05). The lightness of the meat at 45 min postmortem was increased (p = 0.029) in the restricted kids. Apart from an increase in tyrosine concentration (p = 0.046), the proximate composition and the amino acid and fatty acid profiles were unaffected in the restricted kids (p > 0.05). Overall, maternal undernutrition during mid-gestation decreased the yield of kid meat, but did not significantly modify the quality and composition. These results highlight the importance of nutrient status during mid-gestation in the meat production of small ruminants under an extensive regime.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of tevioside on feed intake, feeding behavior, nutrient digestion, rumen fermentation, and serum biochemical parameters in goats. Nine male Xiangdong black goats (21.8 ± 1.5 kg of body weight) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square. All goats were fed a basal diet including concentrate and forage (chopped rice traw). The three treatments were 0, 400, or 800 mg stevioside per kg chopped rice traw on a dry matter (DM) basis. Dry matter intake of forage and total diet linearly increased (p = 0.03 and p = 0.04) with increasing stevioside in the diet. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of stevioside inclusion in the diets on eating time, rumination time, or total mastication time for the goats. Total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in the rumen responded quadratically (p < 0.01), decreasing from 0 to 400 mg/kg stevioside inclusion and increasing thereafter. The inclusion of steviosid in the diets promoted a quadratic increase in the apparent total tract digestibilities of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (p = 0.02) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) (p = 0.01). Based on the results of this experiment, it could be concluded that supplementing goat diets with stevioside at 400 mg/kg to 800 mg/kg forage (about 270 to 541 mg/kg diet) resulted in increased dry intake of forage and total diet, suggesting that stevioside has positive potential as a feed additive to improve feed intake.

A series of batch cultures were conducted to investigate the effects of oleic acid (OA) on in vitro ruminal dry matter degradability (IVDMD), gas production, methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) production, and proportion of fatty acids. Rumen fluid was collected from fistulated goats, diluted with incubation buffer, and then incubated with 500 mg Leymus chinensis meal supplemented with different amounts of OA (0, 20, 40, and 60 mg for the CON, OA20, OA40 and OA60 groups, respectively). Incubation was carried out anaerobically at 39°C for 48 h, and the samples were taken at 12, 24 and 48 h and subjected to laboratory analysis. Supplementation of OA decreased IVDMD, the cumulative gas production, theoretical maximum of gas production and CH4 production, but increased H2 production. However, no effect was observed on any parameters of rumen fermentation (pH, ammonia, production of acetate, propionate and butyrate and total volatile fatty acid production). The concentrations of some beneficial fatty acids, such as cis monounsaturated fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were higher (P < 0.05) from OA groups than those from the control group at 12 h incubation. In summary, these results suggest that the OA supplementation in diet can reduce methane production and increase the amount of some beneficial fatty acids in vitro.

Second hand cigarette smoke is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Although a tie between smoking and cardiovascular disease is well established, the underlying mechanisms still remains elusive due to the lack of adequate animal models. This study was designed to use a mouse model of exposure to cigarette smoke, a surrogate of environmental tobacco smoke, to evaluate the impact of cardiac overexpression of heavy metal scavenger metallothionein on myocardial geometry, contractile and intracellular Ca(2+) properties and apoptosis following side-stream smoke exposure.Adult male wild-type FVB and metallothionein transgenic mice were placed in a chamber exposed to cigarette smoke for 1 hour daily for 40 days. Echocardiographic, cardiomyocyte contractile and intracellular Ca(2+) properties, fibrosis, apoptosis and mitochondrial damage were examined.Our data revealed that smoke exposure enlarged ventricular end systolic and diastolic diameters, reduced myocardial and cardiomyocyte contractile function, disrupted intracellular Ca(2+) homeostasis, facilitated fibrosis, apoptosis and mitochondrial damage (cytochrome C release and aconitase activity), the effects of which were attenuated or mitigated by metallothionein. In addition, side-stream smoke expose enhanced phosphorylation of Akt and GSK3β without affecting pan protein expression in the heart, the effect of which was abolished or ameliorated by metallothionein. Cigarette smoke extract interrupted cardiomyocyte contractile function and intracellular Ca(2+) properties, the effect of which was mitigated by wortmannin and NAC.These data suggest that side-stream smoke exposure led to myocardial dysfunction, intracellular Ca(2+) mishandling, apoptosis, fibrosis and mitochondrial damage, indicating the therapeutic potential of antioxidant against in second smoking-induced cardiac defects possibly via mitochondrial damage and apoptosis.
