Among the largest transcription factor families in plants, bZIPs are crucial for various developmental and physiological processes, particularly abiotic stress resistance. Setaria italica has become a model for understanding stress resistance mechanisms. In this study, we identified 90 bZIP transcription factors in the Setaria italica genome. SibZIPs were classified into 13 groups based on references to Arabidopsis bZIPs. Members in the same group shared similar motifs and gene structure pattern. In addition, gene duplication analysis indenfied 37 pairs of segmental duplicated genes and none tandem duplicated genes in S. italica suggesting segmental duplication contributed to the expansion of the S. italica bZIP gene family. Moreover, the number of SibZIPs genes (39) exhibiting higher expression in roots was significantly more than that in other organs. Twelve SibZIP genes were upregulated in response to dehydration stress. In conclusion, our study advances the current understanding of SibZIP genes and provide a number of candidates for functional analysis of drought tolerance in S. italica.

At the end of Early Cambrian time, the Sichuan basin (South China) was located in a wide carbonate platform, with hundreds of meters of carbonate deposited. The Longwangmiao Formation carbonate in Sichuan basin is partially to completely dolomitized, displaying a mottled texture in the northern area of the exposure. The mottled dolomitic limestone developed parallel to bedding, with shape irregular boundaries with limestone that has not been dolomitized. The mottled dolomite is composed of powder crystalline and finely crystalline dolomite, while the matrix limestone is composed of micritic calcite. the isotopic composition of mottled dolomite (δ13C = +0.29‰PDB, δ18O = −1.15‰PDB) is similar to that of micrite calcite (δ13C = −0.49‰PDB, δ18O = −1.45‰PDB). Both isotopic values and trace element data indicate that the dolomitized fluid is originated from sea water. Some beds contain gypsum pseudomorphs and mud cracks, indicating a shallow and evaporative environment with local high salinity during deposition. Dolomitization likely took place early, in part as a result of sea water salinity concentration. Trace fossils thalassinoides horizontalis, thalassinoides callianassa and planolites developed in the Longwangmiao Formation, and the sharp edges of mottled dolomite are similar to these trace fossils. The beds are intensely bioturbated. In the burrow network, the sediments and burrow fill were coarse and loose with little clay, and it is interpreted here as being easier to be dolomitized than the surrounding sediments. Partial dolomitization is thus interpreted to have occurred in the burrow system, and the degree of dolomitization was related to the degree of bioturbation, which is controlled by the trace-making creatures.

Background/Objectives: The formula Chong-Lou-Yao-Fang (CLYF) is an herbal medicinal formulation developed by the indigenous Naxi people for treating liver cancer. This study was to reveal the biological activity, potential targets, and molecular mechanisms of CLYF for cancer treatment. Methods: Network pharmacology, microarray data analysis, survival analysis, and molecular docking were employed to predict potential compounds, targets, and pathways for the treatment of liver cancer. In vitro experiments and Western blot validation were conducted to confirm these predictions. Results: 35 key compounds and 20 core targets were screened from CLYF, involving signaling pathways for PI3K–Akt, MAPK, hepatitis B and C, which were effective for liver cancer treatment. Microarray data analysis and survival analysis indicated that EGFR and TP53 serve as promising biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in liver cancer. Molecular docking revealed stable binding between EGFR, TP53, and AKT1 with active ingredients. Cell experiments confirmed that CLYF-A suppressed cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and caused cell cycle arrest in HepG2 cells, which were associated with a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. Compared to the control group, the relative protein expression levels of EGFR and AKT1 significantly decreased following treatment with CLYF-A, while TP53 levels increased significantly. Conclusions: Verification of the anticancer activity of CLYF and its potential mechanisms may have important implications for anticancer therapies. Our results may provide a scientific basis for the clinical use of CLYF for cancer treatment and have important implications for developing pharmaceutical preparations, which also need more pharmacological experiments, clinical experiments, and in vivo experiments.

During a survey of microfungi associated with grasslands and related vegetation types from Yunnan Province in China, various ascomycetous and coelomycetous fungi were isolated. This study reports the discovery of four strains of ascomycetous and coelomycetous fungi from dead stalks of Hypericum monogynum L. (Hypericaceae) and Rubus parvifolius L. (Rosaceae) in the Zhaotong region of Yunnan Province, China. The isolates were characterized using multi-locus phylogenetic analyses and were found to represent a new monophyletic lineage in Melanommataceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). This new clade was named as Dematiomelanomma yunnanense gen. et sp. nov. which consists of both sexual and asexual morphs. The sexual morph is characterized by globose to subglobose ascomata with a central ostiole, cylindrical asci with a pedicel and ocular chamber, and muriform, ellipsoidal to fusiform ascospores. The asexual morph has synanamorphs including both brown, muriform macroconidia and hyaline, round to oblong or ellipsoidal microconidia. These findings contribute to the understanding of fungal diversity in grasslands and related vegetation types in Yunnan Province, China.

The review highlights the significance of traditional knowledge in using edible fruits to address health issues, specifically focusing on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Edible fruits are rich in beneficial components like dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, bioactive peptides, and antioxidants which contribute to overall health and show potential in managing gastrointestinal disorders. The objective of the review is to provide strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of edible fruits in preventing and treating IBD. The study conducted an extensive review of research published from 2001 to 2022, gathering data from reputable sources and evaluating the utilization of edible fruits in IBD treatment. This review identified 36 species of edible fruits across 10 families historically used in traditional medicine. Various bioactive molecules like tannins, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids, alkaloids, and ascorbic acid have been isolated from these fruits. Recent studies have shown that compounds from edible fruits can counteract intestinal inflammation in animal models by influencing key signaling pathways and exhibiting immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The review suggests that extracts from edible fruits could offer potential alternative or supplementary treatments for individuals with IBD. However, the review also acknowledges limitations in some prior studies, including inadequate dosages, insufficient standards, and an incomplete understanding of mechanisms. Further research is needed to fully elucidate the mechanisms underlying the effects of these extracts and compounds.

Background Lung cancer has the highest cancer-related mortality worldwide. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common histological subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Chromatin licensing and DNA replication factor 1 (CDT1), a key regulator of cell cycle control and replication in eukaryotic cells, has been implicated in various cancer-related processes. Given its significant role in cancer, the focus on CDT1 in this study is justified as it holds promise as a potential biomarker or therapeutic target for cancer treatment. However, its prognostic value in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unclear. Methods Bioinformatics analysis was conducted using data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases were utilized to predict biological processes and signaling pathways, respectively. The LinkedOmics database was employed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with CDT1. Nomograms and Kaplan-Meier plots were generated to assess the survival rates of patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). To determine the RNA and protein expression levels of CDT1 in LUAD and adjacent normal tissues, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry techniques were employed, respectively. Results CDT1 was upregulated in the vast majority of cancer tissues, based on pan-cancer analysis in TCGA and GEO datasets, as to lung cancer, the level of CDT1 expression was much higher in LUAD tissue than in healthy lung tissue. Our clinical data supported these findings. In our study, we used a specific cutoff value to dichotomize the patient samples into high and low CDT1 expression groups. The Kaplan–Meier survival curve revealed poor survival rates in CDT1 high expression group than the low expression group. To determine if CDT1 expression was an independent risk factor in LUAD patients, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed. The result showed that CDT1 was a potential novel prognosis factor for LUAD patients, whose prognosis was poorer when CDT1 expression was higher. Based on functional enrichment analysis, highly expressed DEGs of CDT1-high patients were predicted to be involved in the cell cycle. According to our analysis of immune infiltration, CDT1 exhibited a strong correlation with specific immune cell subsets and was found to be a significant predictor of poor survival in patients with LUAD. Conclusions Our research found that CDT1 was upregulated in LUAD and that high CDT1 expression predicted poor prognosis. We comprehensively and systematically analyzed the expression level in the datasets as well as in our own clinical samples, we also evaluated the prognostic and diagnostic value of CDT1, and finally, the potential mechanisms of CDT1 in the progression of LUAD. These results suggested that CDT1 may be a prognostic marker and therapeutic target for LUAD.

Abstract Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant tumor that often metastasizes in orthopedic diseases. Although multi-drug chemotherapy and surgical treatment have significantly improved the survival and prognosis of patients with osteosarcoma, the survival rate is still very low due to frequent metastases in patients with osteosarcoma. In-depth exploration of the relationship between various influencing factors of osteosarcoma is very important for screening promising therapeutic targets. This study used multivariate COX regression analysis to select the hypoxia genes SLC2A1 and FBP1 in patients with osteosarcoma, and used the expression of these two genes to divide the patients with osteosarcoma into high-risk and low-risk groups. Then, we first constructed a prognostic model based on the patient's risk value and compared the survival difference between the high expression group and the low expression group. Second, in the high expression group and the low expression group, compare the differences in tumor invasion and inflammatory gene expression between the two groups of immune cells. Finally, the ferroptosis-related genes with differences between the high expression group and the low expression group were screened, and the correlation between these genes was analyzed. In the high-risk group, immune cells with higher tumor invasiveness, macrophages M0 and immune cells with lower invasiveness included: mast cell resting, regulatory T cells (Tregs) and monocytes. Finally, among genes related to ferroptosis, we found AKR1C2, AKR1C1 and ALOX15 that may be related to hypoxia. These ferroptosis-related genes were discovered for the first time in osteosarcoma. Among them, the hypoxia gene FBP1 is positively correlated with the ferroptosis genes AKR1C1 and ALOX15, and the hypoxia gene SLC2A1 is negatively correlated with the ferroptosis genes AKR1C2, AKR1C1 and ALOX15. This study constructed a prognostic model based on hypoxia-related genes SLC2A1 and FBP1 in patients with osteosarcoma, and explored their correlation with immune cells, inflammatory markers and ferroptosis-related genes. This indicates that SLC2A1 and FBP1 are promising targets for osteosarcoma research.

The permanent strain is one of the most important dynamic properties of the granite residual soil. To systematically study the dynamic deformation characteristics of granite residual soil (GRS) under the drying-wetting (D-W) cycles, a series of dynamic triaxial tests is carried out to obtain the stress-strain relationship of GRS with various fine particle contents subjected to D-W cycles. The experimental results show that the growth of permanent strain consists of two stages, namely, compaction stage and compression stage. The main effect of D-W cycles is reflected in the compression stage. On the other hand, the influence of fine particle contents on the permanent strain occurs mainly at the compaction stage, which can be classified as the lubrication, densification, and asphyxiation, respectively. Subsequently, a new criterion to characterize the permanent strain of GRS is deduced from the experimental results, which accounts for both strains and rates of strains. This criterion illustrates that with the increase of D-W cycles number, the permanent strain evaluation pattern of GRS is gradually changing from plastic stabilization to plastic creep. Finally, a quadratic function model referring to the log-log scale is proposed to fit well the relationship between the permanent strain and loading cycle number of GRS under D-W cycles. It is found that the parameters of the proposed model can physically represent the strain rate, the compression strain, and the compaction strain.

Objectives. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) immunoglobulin G (IgG) seropositivity is prevalent, but its correlation with homocysteine (Hcy), a biomarker of vascular risk events, is unclear. This study is aimed at exploring the correlation of H. pylori IgG seropositivity and plasma Hcy levels in adults. Methods. Data was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999-2000. Hcy was measured by the Abbott homocysteine assay, and H. pylori IgG was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The weighted multiple logistic regression analyses with adjustments for potential confounders were conducted. Subgroup analyses stratified by gender, age, and race were performed. Results. A total of 4029 subjects aged 20-85 years were included. Population prevalence of H. pylori IgG seropositivity was 44.7% in the overall population with higher prevalence found in those with older age, Mexican Americans, lower education, and lower household income. Levels of plasma Hcy were not elevated in those with H. pylori IgG seropositivity versus seronegativity (β -0.120 (-0.438, 0.199) P=0.462). This difference was not significant after stratifying by gender and age. However, in the subgroup analyses stratified by race, a negative correlation between H. pylori seropositivity and plasma Hcy levels was observed in Mexican Americans (β -0.802 (-1.253, -0.352) P

Although the Ordovician petroleum exploration in the Sichuan Basin has been developed slowly for a long time, deepening the research of reservoir characteristics and genesis is still a robust way to accelerate it. This paper characterizes the Ordovician reservoirs in the central part of Sichuan Basin and analyzes their genesis based on cores, thin sections, well logs and drilling data. The results show the reservoirs concentrated in the Lower Ordovician Tongzi Formation, which consist mainly of sandy oolitic dolostones, bioclastic dolostones, fine crystalline dolostones, sandy dolomitized conglomerates, sandy dolostones and dolomite sandstone. The porosity types include interparticle pore, intraparticle pore, moldic pore, fracture and vug. Throats are mostly necked and flaky. The Tongzi Formation reservoirs mainly experienced three types of diageneses, including compaction, cementation and dissolution. The reservoir development was controlled by multiple factors of deposition, diagenesis and tectonics; the shoal facies is the basis, the penecontemporaneous dissolution and dolomitization are the main driving force, and the burial dissolution is the aid. The study can provide reference for deepening the Ordovician petroleum exploration and development in the Sichuan Basin.

Infrared sensors capture thermal radiation emitted by objects. They can operate in all weather conditions and are thus employed in fields such as military surveillance, autonomous driving, and medical diagnostics. However, infrared imagery poses challenges such as low contrast and indistinct textures due to the long wavelength of infrared radiation and susceptibility to interference. In addition, complex enhancement algorithms make real-time processing challenging. To address these problems and improve visual quality, in this paper, we propose a multi-scale FPGA-based method for real-time enhancement of infrared images by using rolling guidance filter (RGF) and contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE). Specifically, the original image is first decomposed into various scales of detail layers and a base layer using RGF. Secondly, we fuse detail layers of diverse scales, then enhance the detail information by using gain coefficients and employ CLAHE to improve the contrast of the base layer. Thirdly, we fuse the detail layers and base layer to obtain the image with global details of the input image. Finally, the proposed algorithm is implemented on an FPGA using advanced high-level synthesis tools. Comprehensive testing of our proposed method on the AXU15EG board demonstrates its effectiveness in significantly improving image contrast and enhancing detail information. At the same time, real-time enhancement at a speed of 147 FPS is achieved for infrared images with a resolution of 640 × 480.

AbstractAmalgamation of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks in the context of Gondwana assembly in the early Paleozoic has been addressed for decades, but the far-field effects on the Yangtze Block during the amalgamation remain unclear. In this study, we outline the sequence stratigraphic framework of the Ordovician succession in the central-upper Yangtze Block and analyze provenance records in sandstone compositions, distributions, and detritus zircon U-Pb dating. The Ordovician succession in the central-upper Yangtze Block is subdivided into six third-order sequences, which were deposited mainly in a carbonate platform with restricted sediments in Tremadocian to early Floian stages, mixed terrigenous-carbonate deposits in mid- to late Floian stages, and open circulation sediments in Dapingian to middle Katian stages. These sequences show the central-upper Yangtze Block experienced syn-tectonic deformation with northeast-trending long-wavelength uplift and depression alternatively and the depocenter shifting from the east during Tremadocian to mid-Floian stages to the southwest in late Floian to early Hirnantian stages. Provenance data indicate that detritus in the Ordovician succession was mainly from the northern India and Kangdian paleohighland to the southwest of South China Block. Incorporating the depositional and deformation variations, we propose a retroarc foreland basin that was developed on the South China Block in response to final suturing between the South China Block and East Gondwana at Sanya suture zone. The South China Block was thus involved in the global tectonics of the Gondwana supercontinental cycle during the Ordovician.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, because of its widespread transmission and infection rates. The unique severe disease was found in Wuhan, China, since December 2019, and swiftly spread throughout the world. Natural chemicals derived from herbal medicines and medicinal mushrooms provide a significant resource for the development of novel antiviral drugs. Many natural drugs have been proven to have antiviral properties against a variety of virus strains, such as the coronavirus and the herpes simplex virus (HSV).. In this research, successful dietary treatments for different COVID illnesses were compared to potential of mushroom products in its therapy. In Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, and Scopus, search keywords like COVID, COVID-19, SARS, MERS, mushrooms, and their compounds were utilized. In this review of the literature we foucsed popular mushrooms such as Agaricus subrufescens Peck, Agaricus blazei Murill, Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc., Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis.) P. Karst., Grifola frondosa (Dicks.) Gray, Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers., Inonotus obliquus (Arch. Ex Pers.) Pilát., Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler, Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm., Poria cocos F.A. Wolf, and Trametes versicolor (L.) Lloyd.,. Changed forms of β-Glucan seem to have a good impact on viral replication suppression and might be used in future studies. However, the results seems terpenoids, lectins, glycoproteins, lentinan, galactomannan, and polysaccharides from mushrooms are promising prophylactic or therapeutic agents against COVID-19.

Based on outcrop characteristics, combined with regional tectonic background, drilling and geophysical data, the sedimentary characteristics of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the northern Sichuan Basin was studied by means of macroscopic and microscopic observation, geochemical element test, total organic carbon content and vitrinite reflectance measurement. There is a set of deep-water sediments rich in organic matter in the Guangyuan-Wangcang area of northern Sichuan during the late depositional period of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation. The strata are distributed from northwest to southeast, with thickness of 10–30 m, mainly composed of siliceous rocks and siliceous mudstones, intercalated with gravity flow deposits. Siliceous rocks and siliceous mudstones are characterized by thin single layer, flat bedding and rich siliceous radiolarians, calthrop and brachiopod with small body and thin shell, belonging to the typical sedimentary characteristics of deep-water trough facies. The contents of Cu, Co, Mo, Ni and the ratio of Ni to Co in the geochemical tests all indicate that the siliceous rocks are products of deep-water reducing environment. The TOC value ranges from 3.21% to 8.19%, with an average of 5.53%, indicating that the siliceous rocks have good hydrocarbon generation ability. The south side of the trough is in platform margin facies with high energy, and the sediments are mainly thick massive micritic-calcsparite biogenic (clastic) limestone, which is conducive to the formation and evolution of the reservoir. During the late sedimentary period of the Maokou Formation, the northward subduction and extension of the oceanic crust at the northwestern margin of the Yangtze Plate provided the internal dynamic conditions for the formation of the “Guangyuan-Wangcang” trough. According to the location, sedimentary characteristics and formation dynamics of the trough, it is similar to the “Kaijiang-Liangping” trough during Late Permian proposed by previous researchers. It is believed that the “Kaijiang-Liangping” trough already had its embryonic form during the Late Middle Permian.

In southern China, granite residual soil (GRS) is widely used as road base material. Thus, it is important to study the effects of hot and rainy climates and cyclic loads generated by trains on the dynamic properties of GRS. In this work, by means of dynamic triaxial tests, the effects of the number of drying and wetting (D–W) cycles, fines content and number of load cycles on the hysteresis curve, dynamic shear modulus Gd and damping ratio λ of GRS are systematically investigated. The experimental results illustrate the changes in the morphology of the hysteresis curve and dynamic parameters with the numbers of load and D–W cycles, as well as the fines content. Namely, the area S, center offset d, and residual strain εsp of the hysteresis curve decrease with the increase of load cycle number, increase with the growth of fines content, and first decrease with the increase of D–W cycle number, then slowly increase to stabilized values. However, the major axis gradient k exhibits exactly the opposite relationships. Meanwhile, the dynamic shear modulus Gd increases with the growing load cycles and decreases with the addition of fines content, and the damping ratio λ shows the opposite behavior. It is also shown that Gd and λ vary linearly with respect to logN, where N is the number of D–W cycles. The dynamic properties of GRS are mostly affected by the number of load cycles, which is followed by the fines content and then the number of D–W cycles. The influence of the latter two factors on the dynamic properties of GRS may be primarily due to contact form changes between soil particles.

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent metabolic and endocrine illness affecting people all over the world and is of serious health and financial concern. Antidiabetic medicine delivered through pharmacotherapy, including synthetic antidiabetic drugs, are known to have several negative effects. Fortunately, several natural polysaccharides have antidiabetic properties, and the use of these polysaccharides as adjuncts to conventional therapy is becoming more common, particularly in underdeveloped nations. Oxidative stress has a critical role in the development of diabetes mellitus (DM). The review of current literature presented here focusses, therefore, on the antioxidant properties of mushroom polysaccharides used in the management of diabetic complications, and discusses whether these antioxidant properties contribute to the deactivation of the oxidative stress-related signalling pathways, and to the amelioration of β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of the relevant information concerning the antioxidant and antidiabetic effects of mushrooms from electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus or Google Scholar, for the period 1994 to 2021. In total, 104 different polysaccharides from mushrooms have been found to have antidiabetic effects. Most of the literature on mushroom polysaccharides has demonstrated the beneficial effects of these polysaccharides on reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) levels. This review discuss the effects of these polysaccharides on hyperglycemia and other alternative antioxidant therapies for diabetic complications through their applications and limits, in order to gain a better understanding of how they can be used to treat DM. Preclinical and phytochemical investigations have found that most of the active polysaccharides extracted from mushrooms have antioxidant activity, reducing oxidative stress and preventing the development of DM. Further research is necessary to confirm whether mushroom polysaccharides can effectively alleviate hyperglycemia, and the mechanisms by which they do this, and to investigate whether these polysaccharides might be utilized as a complementary therapy for the prevention and management of DM in the future.

With the modern technological developments in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the survival rate of cancer patients has increased. On the other hand, the incidence of multiple primary tumors is increasing annually. Lynch syndrome (LS), an autosomal dominant disorder with germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes, increases the risk of cancer in patients carrying those mutations. In this report, we present an extremely rare case of an 81-year-old male patient with eight primary malignancies and LS. The patient is still alive having survived for more than 41 years since the initial discovery of the first tumor. The eighth and most recently diagnosed primary cancer was a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor. Although there have been numerous reports of malignancies in LS, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors have not been reported previously with LS. Here, we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with LS.

Abstract Background Most regions of Myanmar fall within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and are threatened with biodiversity loss. Development of a comprehensive framework for sustainable development is crucial. Figs are ecological keystone species within these regions and are also important for traditional spiritual food and health uses, which often have accompanying conservation practices. The traditional use and management of figs may offer clues to help guide the development of national policies for sustainable development. In this study, we showcase the rich ethnobotanical knowledge as well as the variety of collection and conservation practices of figs among five ethnic groups in Southern Shan State. Methods We performed both key informant and semi-structured interviews with 114 informants from five ethnic groups. Their uses for figs were categorized according to local practices and recipes. Informants were asked about trends in conservation status over the past 10 years and any conservation-related customs and practices. Data were analyzed quantitatively with common quantitative ethnobotany indices, the use report (UR) and use value (UV). Results Informants reported the uses of eight fig species (Ficus auricularta, F. concinna, F. geniculata, F. hispida, F. racemosa, F. religiosa, F. semicordata, and F. virens). F. geniculata and F. virens were most useful (UR = 228) and were used by all five ethnic groups, corresponding to a high use value (UV = 2). Treatments for 16 diseases were reported from seven species. Household consumption, economic and sacred uses were accompanied by sustainable practices of harvest and protection. Traditional taboos, in situ and ex situ conservation were common especially for highly demanded species (F. geniculata and F. virens) and the sacred fig F. religiosa. Conclusion Findings suggest that figs are useful for food (all informants) and medicine (13.16% of the informants) in the study area. Traditional taboos, in situ and ex situ conservation practices help to maintain sustainable utilization of locally important figs. This is an early contribution to the traditional knowledge of edible figs. Although similar uses have been reported in neighboring countries for seven of the fig species, the ethnobotanical use of F. concinna is novel.

The Sinian Dengying Formation in the Sichuan basin is an important potential reservoir for oil and gas exploration in the periphery of the Sichuan basin. Its reservoirs were well developed. And many kinds of fillings which lead to the decrease of pores can be seen in reservoir pores and caves. In this paper, the pore fillings of the Dengying Formation reservoir in Sichuan basin are the object of study. The types and characteristics of the fillings are studied in detail by means of rock slices analysis, cathode luminescence, trace elements and inclusion temperature measurement. The study shows that the fillings include dolomite fillings and siliceous quartz fillings and bitumen fillings. Among them, dolomite fillings can be divided into botryoidal dolomite fillings, foliated dolomite fillings, finely-medium crystalline dolomite fillings and coarse crystalline dolomite fillings. 50%–80% of the pores are filled by the dolomite fillings with botryoidal structure, and the pores can be partially full filled; 0%–20% of pores are filled by foliated dolomite fillings; 20–80% of the pores are filled by finely-medium dolomite fillings; 20–80% of the pores are filled by coarse crystalline dolomite fillings. 1%–5% of secondary pores are often filled by siliceous quartzs, and the pores can be partially full filled. Bitumen fillings often occur after the above-mentioned fillings, and the residual pores are often semi-filled by bitumens, which makes the original pores and throat smaller and reduces the effective porosity and permeability of the reservoir. So, it is a destructive diagenesis. The pore fillings make the secondary porosity in the reservoir significantly lower, which is not conducive to the formation and preservation of the Dengying Formation reservoir. Objectives. Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD), a Chinese herbal compound, has been widely used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in China. However, evidence from systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) of GQD in UC remains highly controversial. To collate, evaluate, and synthesize the current evidence, we carried out this study. Methods. SRs/MAs of GQD for UC were obtained from eight databases. Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) was utilized to appraise the methodological quality, Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) for reporting quality, and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) for evidence quality. Results. Four eligible SRs/MAs were obtained. According to AMSTAR 2, all SRs/MAs were graded as critically low quality. According to PRISMA checklist, all SRs/MAs failed to report the information of protocol and registration. With GRADE, no outcome measure with high-quality evidence was found, and the evidence quality for outcome measures was in the moderate to critically low levels. Conclusions. GQD with conventional medicine (CM) seems to be more effective in UC than CM alone. This finding provides a new alternative strategy for the treatment of UC. However, owing to the limitations of the evidence provided by the included SRs/MAs, this conclusion must be treated with caution.

Taking advantage of the functional complementarity between infrared and visible light sensors imaging, pixel-level real-time image fusion based on infrared and visible light images of different resolutions is a promising strategy for visual enhancement, which has demonstrated tremendous potential for autonomous driving, military reconnaissance, video surveillance, etc. Great progress has been made in this field in recent years, but the fusion speed and quality of visual enhancement are still not satisfactory. Herein, we propose a multi-scale FPGA-based image fusion technology with substantially enhanced visual enhancement capability and fusion speed. Specifically, the source images are first decomposed into three distinct layers using guided filter and saliency detection, which are the detail layer, saliency layer and background layer. Fusion weight map of the saliency layer is subsequently constructed using attention mechanism. Afterwards weight fusion strategy is used for saliency layer fusion and detail layer fusion, while weight average fusion strategy is used for the background layer fusion, followed by the incorporation of image enhancement technology to improve the fused image contrast. Finally, high-level synthesis tool is used to design the hardware circuit. The method in the present study is thoroughly tested on XCZU15EG board, which could not only effectively improve the image enhancement capability in glare and smoke environments, but also achieve fast real-time image fusion with 55FPS for infrared and visible images with a resolution of 640 × 470.

This study investigated the characteristics and genesis of reservoirs in the 2nd and 4th members of Sinian Dengying Formation in northern Sichuan and its surrounding areas, on the basis of outcrop, drilling cores and thin section observation and geochemical analysis. The reservoirs of 2nd member are distributed in the middle part of the stratum. The reservoir quality is controlled by supergene karst and the distribution of mound-shoal complex. The bedded elongated isolated algal framework solution-cave and the residual “grape-lace” cave, which are partially filled with multi-stage dolosparite, constituted the main reservoir space of the 2nd member. There is no asphalt distribution in the pores. The pore connectivity is poor, and the porosity and permeability of the reservoir is relatively low. The reservoirs of 4th member were distributed in the upper and top part of the stratum. The reservoir quality is controlled by burial dissolution and the distribution of mound-shoal complex. The bedded algal framework solution-pores or caves, intercrystalline pores and intercrystalline dissolved pores constituted the main reservoir space of the 4th member. It's partially filled with asphalt and quartz, without any dolosparite fillings in the pores and caves. The pore connectivity is good. Most of the 4th member reservoirs had medium-low porosity and low permeability, and, locally, medium-high porosity and medium permeability. Affected by the development of mound-shoal complex and heterogeneous dissolution, the platform margin along Ningqiang, Guangyuan, Jiange and Langzhong is the most favorable region for reservoir development. Deep buried Dengying Formation in the guangyuan and langzhong areas should be the most important hydrocarbon target for the future exploration. Background: The abuse of methamphetamine (MA) worldwide has gained international attention as the most rapidly growing illicit drug problem. The classification and treatment response prediction of MA addicts are thereby paramount, in order for effective treatments to be more targeted to individuals. However, there has been limited progress.Methods: In the present study, 43 MA-dependent participants and 38 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled, and their resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. MA-dependent participants who showed 50% reduction in craving were defined as responders to treatment. The present study used the machine learning method, which is a support vector machine (SVM), to detect the most relevant features for discriminating and predicting the treatment response for MA-dependent participants based on the features extracted from the functional graph metrics.Results: A classifier was able to differentiate MA-dependent subjects from normal controls, with a cross-validated prediction accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 73.2% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 71.23–74.17%), 66.05% (95% CI = 63.06–69.04%), and 80.35% (95% CI = 77.77–82.93%), respectively, at the individual level. The most accurate combination of classifier features included the nodal efficiency in the right middle temporal gyrus and the community index in the left precentral gyrus and cuneus. Between these two, the community index in the left precentral gyrus had the highest importance. In addition, the classification performance of the other classifier used to predict the treatment response of MA-dependent subjects had an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 71.2% (95% CI = 69.28–73.12%), 86.75% (95% CI = 84.48–88.92%), and 55.65% (95% CI = 52.61–58.79%), respectively, at the individual level. Furthermore, the most accurate combination of classifier features included the nodal clustering coefficient in the right orbital part of the superior frontal gyrus, the nodal local efficiency in the right orbital part of the superior frontal gyrus, and the right triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus and right temporal pole of middle temporal gyrus. Among these, the nodal local efficiency in the right temporal pole of the middle temporal gyrus had the highest feature importance.Conclusion: The present study identified the most relevant features of MA addiction and treatment based on SVMs and the features extracted from the graph metrics and provided possible biomarkers to differentiate and predict the treatment response for MA-dependent patients. The brain regions involved in the best combinations should be given close attention during the treatment of MA.

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] produces a compound raceme inflorescence that branches into secondary inflorescences, which produce flowers. This architecture results in the less-domesticated traits of asynchronous pod maturity and multiple harvest times. This study identified the genetic factors responsible for the compound raceme of mungbean, providing a unique biological opportunity to improve simultaneous flowering. Using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from VC1973A, an elite cultivar with a compound raceme type, and IT208075, a natural mutant with a simple raceme type, a single locus that determined the inflorescence type was identified based on 1:1 segregation ratio in the F8 generation, and designated Comraceme. Linkage map analysis showed Comraceme was located on chromosome 4 within a marker interval spanning 520 kb and containing 64 genes. RILs carrying heterozygous fragments around Comraceme produced compound racemes, indicating this form was dominant to the simple raceme type. Quantitative trait loci related to plant architecture and inflorescence have been identified in genomic regions of soybean syntenic to Comraceme. In IT208075, 15 genes were present as distinct variants not observed in other landrace varieties or wild mungbean. These genes included Vradi04g00002481, a development-related gene encoding a B3 transcriptional factor. The upstream region of Vradi04g00002481 differed between lines producing the simple and compound types of raceme. Expression of Vradi04g00002481 was significantly lower at the early vegetative stage and higher at the early reproductive stage, in IT208075 than in VC1973A. Vradi04g00002481 was therefore likely to determine inflorescence type in mungbean. Although further study is required to determine the functional mechanism, this finding provides valuable genetic information for understanding the architecture of the compound raceme in mungbean.

Objectives. To explore the effective and safe medicines for treating diabetes. Methods. Hydroalcoholic extracts of 130 medicinal plants belonging to 66 families were evaluated using porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) inhibition and glucose uptake methods together with a literature review. Results. The extracts of 22 species showed the PPL inhibition activity; 18 extracts of 15 species stimulated glucose uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Among them, Mansonia gagei J.R. Drumm., Mesua ferrea L., and Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. exhibited both activities. The extracts of Caladium lindenii (André) Madison rhizomes and Azadirachta indica A. Juss. leaves presented the utmost lipase inhibitory activity with IC50 of 6.86 ± 0.25 and 11.46 ± 0.06 μg/mL, respectively. The extracts of Coptis teeta Wall. rhizomes and Croton tiglium L. seeds stimulated the maximum glucose uptake. Ten species are reported to have antidiabetic activity for the first time. Flavonoids and triterpenoids are the dominant antidiabetic compounds in selected medicinal plants from Myanmar. Conclusions. P. zeylanica, L. cubeba, H. crenulate, M. gagei, C. teeta, and M. ferrea are worthy to advance further study according to their strong antidiabetic activities and limited research on effects in in vivo animal studies, unclear chemical constitutes, and safety.

The type III secretion system (T3SS) consists of a syringe-like export machine injecting effectors from the bacterial cytosol directly into host cells to establish infection. This mechanism is widely distributed in gram-negative bacteria and can be targeted as an innovative strategy for the developing of anti-virulence drugs. In this study, we present an effective T3SS inhibitor, myricanol, inspired by the use of folk medicinal plants traditionally used against infections. Myricanol is a cyclic diarylheptanoid isolated from the medicinal plant Myrica nagi, which is found in South and East Asia. Bioassay-guided fractionation revealed that myricanol inhibited not only the secretion of type III effector proteins of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium UK-1 χ8956 (S. Typhimurium) but also the invasion of S. Typhimurium into mammalian cells, but showed no toxicity to bacterial growth or the host cells. RNA-Seq data analysis showed that the transcription of the pathogenesis-related SPI-1 gene was significantly inhibited by myricanol. Further study demonstrated that myricanol binds physically to HilD and interferes with its DNA-binding activity to the promoters of the hilA and invF genes. In conclusion, we propose that myricanol is responsible for the anti-infectious properties of M. nagi and is a novel T3SS inhibitor of S. Typhimurium through a previously unappreciated mechanism of action.

Based on morphological studies performed on live plants in the field and specimens deposited in herbaria, a new species, Glochidion shanense Gang Yao & Shixiao Luo (Phyllantheae, Phyllanthaceae), is here described and illustrated. The species is morphologically most similar to G. ellipticum Wight, but can be distinguished from the latter by having hairy branchlets, longer pedicels, uniseriate and narrowly triangular sepals of female flowers, 4–5-locular ovaries, stout and cylindric persistent style on fruits.

A hybrid Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor—Membrane Bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) was developed for the treatment of wastewater from a Spanish textile company. Compared with conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment, the feasibility of this hybrid system to reduce economic and environmental impact on an industrial scale was conducted. The results showed that, technically, the removal efficiency of COD, TSS and color reached 93%, 99% and 85%, respectively. The newly dyed fabrics performed with the treated wastewater were qualified under the standards of the textile industry. Economically, the values of Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) calculated for the hybrid MBBR-MBR system are profitable because of the reduction in Operational Expenditure (OPEX) when compared with CAS treatment, due to the lower effluent discharge tax thanks to the higher quality of the effluent and the decolorizing agent saved. The result of Net Present Value (NPV) and the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18% suggested that MBBR-MBR is financially applicable for implantation into the industrial scale. The MBBR-MBR treatment also showed lower environmental impacts than the CAS process in the life cycle assessment (LCA) study, especially in the category of climate change, thanks to the avoidance of using extra decolorizing agent, a synthetic product based on a triamine.

Tricholoma matsutake forms a symbiotic association with coniferous trees, developing mycelial aggregations, called ‘shiro’, which are characterized by distinct chemical and physical properties from nearby forest bulk soil. The fungal diversity living in shiro soil play key roles in nutrient cycles for this economically important mushroom, but have not been profiled across large spatial and environmental gradients. Samples of shiro and non-shiro (nearby bulk soil) were taken from five field sites where sporocarps naturally formed. Phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) and Illumina MiSeq sequencing were combined to identify fungal biomass and community structure. Matsutake dominated in the shiro, which had a significantly reduced saprotrophic fungi biomass compared to non-shiro soil. Fungal diversity was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of T. matsutake in the shiro soil. The fungal community in the shiro was characterized by similar fungal species composition in most samples regardless of forest types. Matsutake coexisted with a specific fungal community due to competition or nutrient interactions. Oidiodendron was positively correlated with the abundance of T. matsutake, commonly cohabitant in the shiro. In contrast, Helotiales and Mortierella were negatively correlated with T. matsutake, both of which commonly inhabit the non-shiro soil but do not occur in shiro soils. We conclude that T. matsutake generate a dominance effect to shape the fungal community and diversity in shiro soil across distinctive forest types.

Graphene fiber-based supercapacitors are known as the potential energy resources for wearable/flexible electronics. However, increasing their specific capacitance and energy density remains a significant challenge. This paper indicates a double layer capacitance of the graphene nanosheets accompanied by pseudocapacitive behavior of the polyaniline to prepare composite fibers with high capacitive response. The polyaniline/graphene composite fibers (PANI/GFs) were synthesized by the self-assembled strategy and chemical reduction by HI. The wrinkle architecture of graphene nanosheets and uniform dispersion of the polyaniline are beneficial to increase the internal electroactive sites and provide a stable structure for the composite fibers. The constructed fiber-shaped supercapacitors with solid-state electrolyte deliver an excellent areal specific capacitance of 370.2 mF cm−2 and an outstanding areal energy density of 12.9 μW h cm−2. The current work reveals the attractive potential of the as-synthesized composite fibers for constructing fiber-shaped supercapacitors with distinguished electrochemical performance, which can be applied in future flexible electronics.

With the extended petroleum exploration of the carbonate reservoir in the Longwangmiao Formation, Lower Cambrian in Sichuan basin, looking for a new favorable exploration area is the primary task in current exploration. This paper focusing on the dolomite reservoir in the Longwangmiao Formation in the Northern Sichuan basin, will evaluate the reservoir conditions, including reservoir lithology, reservoir spaces, physical properties and other basic characteristics. Combined with sedimentary environment study and diagenesis analysis, the genetic mechanism of Longwangmiao reservoir in study area will be discussed. It indicates that the reservoir rocks of Longwangmiao Formation in the study area are composed of dolarenite and crystalline dolomite, and the main reservoir spaces are intergranular dissolved pores, intragranular dissolved pores and intercrystalline dissolved pores. However, most of dissolved pores have been filled with bitumen, which lead to the reservoir properties very poor, both the porosity and permeability are worse than that of central Sichuan basin, so the reservoir in the Longwangmiao Formation in the Northern Sichuan basin is low-porosity and low-permeability reservoir. During the Early Cambrian Longwangmiao period, the study was near the old-land, and the energy of sea water was not enough to deposit many grain shoals, which cause the sediments are small with lots of quartz and muds. Moreover, because lacking of large scale karstification in the late diagenesis, there isn't much dissolved pores and vugs develop in the Longwangmiao Formation. Some Intergranular dissolved pores and intercrystalline dissolved pores formed by the early atmosphere water dissolved exist as some reservoir spaces, but most of them have been filled with bitumen, which was residual when the ancient oil reservoir transformed. Above factors cause the Longwangmiao Formation in the Northern Sichuan basin become not a very favorable reservoir in Sichuan basin. Abstract Background Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon benign soft tissue tumor and originates from the vascular smooth muscle. It often causes pain and is rarely found in inguinal region. We present a rare case of inguinal canal angioleiomyoma of a female patient who suffered from right groin pain for 4 years and mimicking inguinal hernia clinically. Presentation of case A 53-year-old Chinese female patient presented with 4-year history of right groin pain which was exacerbated by movement. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in view of atypical presentation and absence of cough impulse. Inguinal canal was subsequently explored by open approach and the mass was found arising from the posterior wall of the inguinal canal and measured 5.2 cm × 3.8 cm. The posterior wall was repaired by Bassini approach after the mass was resected en-bloc. Inguinal pain was resolved and no hernia was found during follow-up. Pathology of the resected specimen confirmed angioleiomyoma with clear resection margins. Conclusion This is the first report of a case of angioleiomyoma of the inguinal canal, which presents as a painful mass. Magnetic resonance imaging should be considered when presenting history and physical examination does not confirm with the diagnosis of inguinal hernia. After inguinal canal exploration, suture or mesh repair should be performed to prevent weakening of posterior wall leading to inguinal hernia.

NACs are plant-specific transcription factors that have crucial roles in plant development and biotic and/or abiotic stress responses. This study characterized the functions of the soybean NAC gene GmNAC109 using an overexpression construct in Arabidopsis lines. Sequence analysis revealed that GmNAC109 is highly homologous to ATAF1 (Arabidopsis Transcription Activation Factor 1), which regulates biotic and abiotic stress responses. GmNAC109 protein localized to the nucleus and its C-terminal domain exhibited transcriptional activation activity. Salt, dehydration, and cold stresses significantly increased expression of GmNAC109 in soybean. Similarly, Arabidopsis plants overexpressing GmNAC109 were more tolerant to drought and salt stress than wild-type Col-0 plants. Stress response-related genes, such as DREB1A (drought-responsive element-binding 1A), DREB2A, AREB1 (ABSCISIC ACID-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING PROTEIN 1), AREB2, RD29A (RESPONSIVE TO Desiccation 29A), and COR15A (COLD REGULATED 15A) were upregulated in GmNAC109-overexpressing transgenic Arabidopsis lines. The transgenic lines showed upregulation of the ABA-responsive genes ABI1 (ABA INSENSITIVE 1) and ABI5 and hypersensitivity to ABA. However, GmNAC109 did not increase expression of the ABA-biosynthetic gene NCED3 (NINE-CIS-EPOXYCAROTENOID DIOXYGENASE 3) and endogenous ABA content in the transgenic lines. Overexpression of GmNAC109 significantly increased lateral root formation in transgenic Arabidopsis lines. Expression of AIR3 (AUXIN-INDUCED IN ROOT CULTURES 3) and ARF2 (AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 2) was increased and decreased in these transgenic lines, respectively, indicating that GmNAC109 is involved in the auxin signaling pathway and thereby helps to regulate hairy root formation. Our results provide a basis for development of soybean lines with improved tolerance to abiotic stresses via genetic manipulation.

The tree rhododendrons include the most widely distributed Himalayan Rhododendron species belonging to the subsection Arborea. Distributions of two members of this sub-species were modelled using bioclimatic data for current conditions (1950–2000). A subset of the least correlated bioclimatic variables was used for ecological niche modelling (ENM). We used an ENM ensemble method in the BiodiversityR R-package to map the suitable climatic space for tree rhododendrons based on 217 point location records. Ensemble bioclimatic models for tree rhododendrons had high predictive power with bioclimatic variables, which also separated the climatic spaces for the two species. Tree rhododendrons were found occurring in a wide range of climate and the distributional limits were associated with isothermality, temperature ranges, temperature of the wettest quarter, and precipitation of the warmest quarter of the year. The most suitable climatic space for tree rhododendrons was predicted to be in western Yunnan, China, with suitability declining towards the west and east. Its occurrence in a wide range of climatic settings with highly dissected habitats speaks to the adaptive capacity of the species, which might open up future options for their conservation planning in regions where they are listed as threatened.

Four new triterpenoids, 3β,12β,16β,21β,22-pentahydroxyhopane (1), 12β,16β,21β,22-tetrahydroxyhopan-3-one (2), 3-oxo-olean-12-ene-28,30-dioic acid (3), and 3β-hydroxyoleana-11,13(18)-diene-28,30-dioic acid 30-methyl ester (4); 21 new triterpenoid saponins, glinusopposides A−U (5−25); and 12 known compounds (26−37) were isolated from the whole plants of Glinus oppositifolius. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated based on the analysis of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS) data. All compounds from the plants were measured for antifungal activities against Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton rubrum. Glinusopposide B (6), glinusopposide Q (21), glinusopposide T (24), and glinusopposide U (25) showed strong inhibitory activities against M. gypseum (MIC50 7.1, 6.7, 6.8, and 11.1 μM, respectively) and T. rubrum (MIC50 14.3, 13.4, 11.9, and 13.0 μM, respectively). For those active compounds with an oleanane skeleton, glycosylation (21−26) or oxidation (3) of 3-OH was helpful in increasing the activity; replacement of the 30-methyl group (29) by a carboxymethyl group (26) enhanced the activity; the presence of 11,13(18) double bonds (20) decreased the activity.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age. It is difficult to treat PCOS because of its complex etiology and pathogenesis. Here, we characterized the roles of gut microbiota on the pathogenesis and treatments in letrozole (a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor) induced PCOS rat model. Changes in estrous cycles, hormonal levels, ovarian morphology and gut microbiota by PCR-DGGE and real-time PCR were determined. The results showed that PCOS rats displayed abnormal estrous cycles with increasing androgen biosynthesis and exhibited multiple large cysts with diminished granulosa layers in ovarian tissues. Meanwhile, the composition of gut microbiota in letrozole-treated rats was different from that in the controls. Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus and Clostridium were lower while Prevotella was higher in PCOS rats when compared with control rats. After treating PCOS rats with Lactobacillus and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from healthy rats, it was found that the estrous cycles were improved in all 8 rats in FMT group, and in 6 of the 8 rats in Lactobacillus transplantation group with decreasing androgen biosynthesis. Their ovarian morphologies normalized. The composition of gut microbiota restored in both FMT and Lactobacillus treated groups with increasing of Lactobacillus and Clostridium, and decreasing of Prevotella. These results indicated that dysbiosis of gut microbiota was associated with the pathogenesis of PCOS. Microbiota interventions through FMT and Lactobacillus transplantation were beneficial for the treatments of PCOS rats.

Since Hardin's (1968) paper on the "Tragedy of the Commons," property rights of common-pool resources have been a central concern for natural resource management scholars. Matsutake, a common-pool resource, is an economically important mushroom in several locations around the world. Driven by growing international demand over the last few decades, matsutake management is a relatively new practice both for local communities and government agencies. In Northwest Yunnan, China, one of the most productive areas for matsutake globally, numerous local practices and systems have emerged in the last two to three decades. In this study, we investigate the differences between management systems in eight communities and the factors associated with them. The methods used for field research included key-informant interviews, household surveys, and questionnaires. Three main management patterns were identified through use of statistical clustering based on indicators such as physical environment, resource characteristics, tenure arrangements, regulations and implementation, harvesting behavior, income, and market regulation. It was found that private access - the principal characteristic of which is the exclusive use of resources - results in more income at lower labor cost per household than either of the other open-access management patterns. Even though under the context of ongoing Second Forest Tenure Reform in China - in which collective forest privatization is the key task - application of private-access regimes is limited because of site conditions including physical, institutional, and market environments. Common-access management systems have advantages in terms of managing conflict and balancing equity needs. No matter the type of access right, the key issue for wise matsutake management is institutional. Locally rooted innovative strategies should be encouraged, and institutional capacity building should be carried out to support innovations in matsutake management.
