Abstract Background Play is an indispensable and meaningful activity in children’s daily life. Research has shown that autistic children often exhibit differences in play development. The core traits of autism, such as distinct patterns in social interaction and communication, focused interests, and repetitive behaviors, frequently manifest in their play. Therefore, play may serve as an insightful measure of these differences. Unlike previous studies focusing on play behaviors only, we explored other behaviors associated with autism during free play, and constructed a clinical prediction model for effectively screening autistic children. Methods Participants, including 123 autistic children and 123 neurotypical children aged 1–6 years, engaged in a 1.5-min free play with fixed toys, which was videotaped. A novel behavior-coding scheme was used to code these videos for 19 autistic behaviors, including play. The coding details of the 19 behaviors were then converted and expanded to 81 digital behavior indicators, including counts, duration, and proportion. Results The autistic children showed less functional play and imaginative play and reduced social communication and interactions, such as eye contact, facial expressions, and vocalizations, compared to the neurotypical children during free play. Furthermore, 5 behavioral indicators were selected for the prediction model through stepwise logistic regression, including 1 on socially oriented vocalizations and 4 on count and duration of functional play. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve revealed a good prediction performance with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.826, a sensitivity of 85.4%, and a specificity of 68.3%. Conclusion Our findings highlight differences in play performance and social communication and interactions during free play among autistic children. Based on these findings, we constructed a good clinical prediction model, which might be a potential digital tool used by clinicians to effectively screen autistic children.

Abstract Purpose This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of four kidney depth measurement methods—nuclear medicine tomography, nuclear medicine lateral scanning, ultrasound, and Tonnesen’s formula-based estimation—using CT measurements as the reference standard. Additionally, it investigates the feasibility of utilizing nuclear medicine tomography and lateral scanning for measuring kidney depth in 99mTc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging. Methods Hollow kidney phantoms mimicking the shape and volume of adult kidneys were 3D printed and filled with 99mTcO4 − solution. These phantoms were then subjected to lateral scanning and nuclear medicine tomography using CZT (cadmium-zinc-telluride) SPECT/CT to determine the optimal post-processing method. Forty patients who underwent renal dynamic imaging were recruited for the study. Renal depths were derived from ultrasound, lateral imaging, nuclear medicine tomography, formula-based estimation, and CT measurements. The renal depths obtained through these four methods were for correlation with CT-measured renal depths. Additionally, the absolute differences between renal depths obtained by each method and the CT standard were analyzed and compared across groups. Results Using kidney phantoms, nuclear medicine tomography images were processed with a Butterworth filter (cutoff frequency = 0.6), and renal outlines in lateral images was manually delineated. Abstract Background It is widely accepted that glaucoma-induced oxidative stress expedites cataracts’ process. Therefore, we examined the effects of apelin-13 against oxidative stress-induced damage in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) and investigated the potential pathogenic mechanism of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma. Methods This experiment included five groups: control, H2O2, apelin-13 + H2O2, ML221 + H2O2, and apelin-13 + ML221 + H2O2. ML221 was employed in rescue experiments as an APJ antagonist. HLECs were pretreated with or without apelin-13 and subsequently exposed to H2O2. HLECs’ viability was assessed by CCK8. Cell apoptosis was determined using Annexin V-FITC/PI staining. The mitochondrial membrane potential was assessed by fluorescent probe JC-1. Intracellular G6PD activity, NADPH/NADP+, and GSH/GSSG ratios were detected to assess the cells’ oxidative damage. Result Apelin-13 reversed the H2O2-induced decrease in cell viability. The increased expression of G6PD and GLTU1, the G6PD, GSH/GSSG and NADPH/NADP + levels showed that apelin-13 can mitigate the H2O2-induced inhibition of the pentose phosphate pathway and dysregulation of cell redox status in the apelin-13 + H2O2 group compared with the H2O2 group. In H2O2-treated HLECs, apelin-13 can mitigate cell apoptosis, promote Bcl-2 expression, and suppress the Bax and Caspase-3 expression. In addition, H2O2 substantially reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential in HLECs, which was reversed by apelin-13. Notably, the inhibition of APJ intensified oxidative damage in H2O2-induced HLECs, demonstrating that the effects of apelin-13 were hindered by ML221. Conclutions Apelin-13 reduced oxidative damage and apoptosis in HLECs through APJ. These results demonstrate that apelin-13 can be employed as a potential drug for glaucoma with cataracts to delay the progression of cataracts.

Abstract Background The prediction of protein–protein interaction sites plays a crucial role in biochemical processes. Investigating the interaction between viruses and receptor proteins through biological techniques aids in understanding disease mechanisms and guides the development of corresponding drugs. While various methods have been proposed in the past, they often suffer from drawbacks such as long processing times, high costs, and low accuracy. Results Addressing these challenges, we propose a novel protein–protein interaction site prediction network based on multi-information fusion. In our approach, the initial amino acid features are depicted by the position-specific scoring matrix, hidden Markov model, dictionary of protein secondary structure, and one-hot encoding. Simultaneously, we adopt a multi-channel approach to extract deep-level amino acids features from different perspectives. The graph convolutional network channel effectively extracts spatial structural information. The bidirectional long short-term memory channel treats the amino acid sequence as natural language, capturing the protein’s primary structure information. The ProtT5 protein large language model channel outputs a more comprehensive amino acid embedding representation, providing a robust complement to the two aforementioned channels. Finally, the obtained amino acid features are fed into the prediction layer for the final prediction. Conclusion Compared with six protein structure-based methods and six protein sequence-based methods, our model achieves optimal performance across evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, F1, Matthews correlation coefficient, and area under the precision recall curve, which demonstrates the superiority of our model.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent malignant tumor of the gastrointestinal system, with the third and second highest incidence and mortality rates globally in 2020, respectively. Immunotherapy has developed rapidly in recent years. Natural killer (NK) cells have received increasing attention in the field of tumor immunotherapy due to their recognition and killing tumor cells without the limitations of major histocompatibility complexes. However, constraints within the tumor microenvironment that impede the infiltration and proliferation of NK cells result in poor efficacy of NK cell therapy for solid tumors. Oncolytic viral therapy is an immunogenic treatment with the potential to enhance anti-tumour immune responses and promote immune cell infiltration. In this study, we synergistically combine NK cells with an oncolytic adenovirus carrying Decorin (rAd.DCN) for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC) in a xenograft mouse model. By using Flow cytometry, real-time quantitative PCR and Calcein-AM release assay, we found that rAd.DCN could effectively promote proliferation, activation and degranulation of NK cells, up-regulate expression and secretion of NK cell killing activity-related factors, and enhance their killing activity. The efficacy is better than that of the blank control oncolytic virus rAd.Null. Combined treatment significantly inhibited tumor growth, increased the number of NK cells in peripheral blood, promoted the killing function of NK cells, and increased the expression levels of perforin and IFN-γ. At the same time, more NK cells were recruited to infiltrate tumor tissue. Our study established the feasibility of combination NK cells and oncolytic adenovirus application, thus expanding the scope of potentially curative treatments for NK cells in CRC.

Abstract Although intracranial neural electrodes have significantly contributed to both fundamental research and clinical treatment of neurological diseases, their implantation requires invasive surgery to open craniotomies, which can introduce brain damage and disrupt normal brain functions. Recent emergence of endovascular neural devices offers minimally invasive approaches for neural recording and stimulation. However, existing endovascular neural devices are unable to resolve single-unit activity in large animal models or human patients, impeding a broader application as neural interfaces in clinical practice. Here, we present the ultraflexible implantable neural electrode as an intravascular device (uFINE-I) for recording brain activity at single-unit resolution. We successfully implanted uFINE-Is into the sheep occipital lobe by penetrating through the confluence of sinuses and recorded both local field potentials (LFPs) and multi-channel single-unit spiking activity under spontaneous and visually evoked conditions. Imaging and histological analysis revealed minimal tissue damage and immune response. The uFINE-I provides a practical solution for achieving high-resolution neural recording with minimal invasiveness and can be readily transferred to clinical settings for future neural interface applications such as brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) and the treatment of neurological diseases.

Abstract Background Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the destruction of the components of the periodontium. It significantly impacts oral health and has been linked to systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The critical role of neutrophils in the occurrence and development of chronic periodontitis has been paid increasing attention. The study aimed to explore the protective effects of D-mannose on chronic periodontitis and determine whether its underlying mechanisms is related to neutrophils. Methods To explore the protective effects of D-mannose on chronic periodontitis, the eight-week-old Sprague Dawley rat model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced periodontitis was established, followed by D-mannose treatment by oral gavage. To evaluate the protective effects of D-mannose against periodontal bone loss, methylene blue staining, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and micro-CT scanning were utilized. Then, immunofluorescence (IF), Western Blot, and RT-PCR were applied to assess the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17), anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), ten-eleven translocation 2 (TET2), and key glycolytic enzymes (HK1, HK2, PFKFB3), and to examine D-mannose’s impact on the recruitment and activation of neutrophils in the gingiva. Additionally, neutrophils isolated from the peripheral blood of healthy rats were treated with LPS and D-mannose, and changes in the expression levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, IL-10, and TET2 were observed via IF. Oil content is a crucial indicator for evaluating the quality of peanuts. A rapid and non-destructive method to determine oil content of individual peanut seed can provide robust technical support for breeding high-oil-content peanut varieties. In this study, we established a rapid determination method using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging and chemometrics to assess the oil content of single peanut seed. After selecting key wavelengths through competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), uninformative variable elimination (UVE), and random frog (RF), we constructed an oil content calibration model based on partial least squares regression for single peanut seed. Validation results demonstrated that the correlation coefficient was 0.8393 with a root mean square error of 1.7771 in the calibration set, while it was 0.7915 with a root mean square error of 2.2943 in the independent prediction set. Most samples exhibited relative errors below 5%, confirming the reliability of this model in predicting oil content of single peanut seed.

Physical properties, such as electrochemical and electromagnetic properties, of two-dimensional MXenes can be improved by enhancing their stability. However, MXenes fabricated via acid etching contain defects, which affect their physical properties. In this study, a method to effectively remove Al residues using only water during MXene fabrication while maintaining structural stability is proposed. The fabrication and intercalation of MXenes are controlled via epitaxial self-intercalation of H2O-etched Cr2(AlLi)C. On the basis of this mechanism, the room-temperature ferromagnetism of two-dimensional few-layered Cr2CTx MXenes, which has a specific saturation magnetization of ~0.26 emu/g and a Curie temperature of > 353 K, is experimentally verified. The calculated electronic band structure implies that the semimetal Cr2CTx MXene has a band gap of 0.75 eV. This study opens new possibilities for the research and applications of industrial-scale manufacturing of MXenes and 2D semiconductors.

Abstract In light of the growing urgency of climate change, carbon emissions reduction has emerged as a pivotal concern within global governance. In this paper, we take carbon emission efficiency (CEE) as the research object to characterize the relationship between economic, social, and environmental development in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the regional division standard of eight comprehensive economic zones in China, this paper analyzed the spatial differences, evolutionary characteristics, and influencing factors of CEE in 257 Chinese cities over the period 2003–2019. The analysis conducted the Dagum Gini Coefficient, Markov Transition Probability Matrix, and geographically and temporally weighted regression model (GTWR). The results demonstrate that: (1) The CEE of Chinese cities exhibits an upward trajectory. (2) The inter-differences among the eight comprehensive economic zones represent the primary spatial source of CEE divergence. (3) The CEE of Chinese cities is a staged process of gradual enhancement with spatial spillover effects. (4) Environmental regulation, energy consumption intensity, and green finances are significant factors affecting CEE, and the direction and intensity of their influence have distinct spatial heterogeneity. Ultimately, this paper proposes measures to narrow the development gap between regions and enhance the CEE across the region. Meanwhile, implementing regional refinement management and formulating differentiated regional sustainable development planning.

Abstract Surface acoustic wave (SAW) tweezers are a promising multifunctional micromanipulation method that controls microscale targets via patterned acoustic fields. Owing to their device structure and bonding process, most SAW tweezers have limitations in terms of controlling the position and motion of the acoustic traps, as they generate an acoustic field with a fixed region and adjust the manipulation effects via signal modulation. To address this challenge, we propose movable SAW tweezers with a multilayer structure, achieving dynamic control of their wave field and acoustic trap positions; we demonstrate their precise manipulation functions, such as translation, in-plane rotation, out-of-plane rotation, and cluster formation, on a wide spectrum of samples, including particles, bubbles, droplets, cells, and microorganisms. Our method not only improves the degree of freedom and working range of SAW tweezers but also allows for precise and selective manipulation of microtargets via microtools and localized wavefields. Owing to their flexibility, versatility, and biocompatibility, the movable SAW tweezers can be a practical platform for achieving arbitrary manipulation of microscale targets and have the potential to play significant roles in biomedical microrobotics.

Abstract Phytochrome interacting factors (PIFs) serve as crucial regulators in the light signal transduction pathway and also mediate light signals to regulate secondary metabolite synthesis in plants. However, the regulator role of PIFs in secondary metabolites often varies among different plants. Isorhynchophylline (IRN), an iconic secondary metabolite of Uncaria rhynchophylla, holds significant medicinal value. Low light induces the synthesis of IRN in previous research, but PIFs in U. rhynchophylla have not been studied to date. Building on this, we identified a PIF protein, UrPIF3, which possesses the typical conserved domains of the PIFs and is localized in the nucleus. Moreover, the expression level of UrPIF3 is consistently positively correlated with the expression of two key enzyme genes (UrSGD and UrSTR) in the IRN biosynthesis pathway, regardless of whether under low light or restoring light conditions. Yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase assays further demonstrated that UrPIF3 can directly upregulate UrSGD. Conversely, silencing UrPIF3 inhibits IRN synthesis, and significantly reduces the expression levels of UrSGD and UrSTR. In summary, our results suggest that under low light conditions, UrPIF3 can directly upregulate UrSGD and indirectly upregulate UrSTR, thereby promoting the synthesis of IRN.

Abstract Background Few studies have attempted to use clinical and laboratory parameters to stratify COVID-19 patients with severe versus non-severe initial disease and evaluate age-specific differences in developing multiple different COVID-19-associated disease outcomes. Methods A retrospective cohort included patients from the electronic health database of Hong Kong Hospital Authority between 1 January 2022 and 15 August 2022 until 15 November 2022. The cohort was divided into three cohorts by age (≤ 40, 41–64, and ≥ 65 years old). Each age cohort was stratified into four groups: (1) COVID-19 critically exposed group (ICU admission, mechanical ventilation support, CRP > 80 mg/L, or D-dimer > 2 g/mL), (2) severely exposed group (CRP 30–80 mg/L, D-dimer 0.5–2 g/mL, or CT value 40) for the disease outcomes in the acute phase of infection (e.g., mortality risk HR (aged ≤ 40): 1.0 (95%CI: 0.5,2.0), HR (aged 41–64): 2.1 (95%CI: 1.8, 2.6), HR (aged > 65): 4.8 (95%CI: 4.6, 5.1)); while in the post-acute phase, these risks were largely insignificant in those aged 65): 1.5 (95%CI: 1.5,1.6)). Fully vaccinated patients were associated with lower risks of disease outcomes than those receiving less than two doses of vaccination. Conclusions The risk of multiple different disease outcomes in both acute and post-acute phases increased significantly with the increasing severity of acute COVID-19 illness, specifically among the elderly. Moreover, future studies could improve by risk-stratifying patients based on universally accepted thresholds for clinical parameters, particularly biomarkers, using biological evidence from immunological studies.

Abstract This study aims to identify colorectal cancer (CRC)-related proteomic profiles and develop a prediction model for CRC onset by integrating proteomic profiles with genetic and non-genetic factors (QCancer-15) to improve the risk stratification and estimate of personalized initial screening age. Here, using a two-stage strategy, we prioritize 15 protein biomarkers as predictors to construct a protein risk score (ProS). The risk prediction model integrating proteomic profiles with polygenic risk score (PRS) and QCancer-15 risk score (QCancer-S) shows improved performance (C-statistic: 0.79 vs. 0.71, P = 4.94E–03 in training cohort; 0.75 vs 0.69, P = 5.49E–04 in validation cohort) and net benefit than QCancer-S alone. The combined model markedly stratifies the risk of CRC onset. Participants with high ProS, PRS, or combined risk score are proposed to start screening at age 46, 41, or before 40 years old. In this work, the integration of blood proteomics with PRS and QCancer-15 demonstrates improved performance for risk stratification and clinical implication for the derivation of risk-adapted starting ages of CRC screening, which may contribute to the decision-making process for CRC screening.

Abstract Melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) are a type of electronegative compound that can be used as photothermal agent for cancer treatment. Nevertheless, the agglomeration of MNP, which is one of the limitations in practice, contributes to the instability of MNP. Pristine layered double hydroxide (LDH), as a kind of positive inorganic material when there exist no other cargo between its layers, can accommodate electronegative molecules between its layers to endow them with stable properties. Hence, in this study, electronegative MNP was intercalated into LDH lamellas via ion-exchange method to obtain the stable original photothermal agent LDH/MNP, solving the tough problem of MNP’s agglomeration. The surface morphology, X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectra affirmed the successful intercalation of MNP between LDH lamellas. The Z-average particle sizes of LDH/MNP on day 0, 7 and 14 were measured as 221.8 nm, 227.6 nm and 230.5 nm without obvious fluctuation, while the particle sizes of MNP went through dramatic enlargement from 105.8 nm (day 0) to 856.1 nm (day 7), indicating the better stability of LDH/MNP than MNP. The typical polymer dispersity index (PDI) values on day 0, 7 and 14 verified the better stability of LDH/MNP, too. Photothermal properties of LDH/MNP were assessed and the results ensured the representative photothermal properties of LDH/MNP. The fine cytocompatibility of LDH/MNP was verified via cytotoxicity test. Results confirmed that the agglomeration of MNP disappeared after its intercalation into LDH and LDH/MNP possessed fine stability as well as typical photothermal property. The intercalation of MNP into LDH gave the photothermal agent MNP a promising way for its better stability and long-term availability in photothermal treatment.

Abstract In this community effort, we compare measurements between 34 laboratories from 19 countries, utilizing mixtures of labelled authentic synthetic standards, to quantify by mass spectrometry four clinically used ceramide species in the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) human blood plasma Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1950, as well as a set of candidate plasma reference materials (RM 8231). Participants either utilized a provided validated method and/or their method of choice. Mean concentration values, and intra- and inter-laboratory coefficients of variation (CV) were calculated using single-point and multi-point calibrations, respectively. These results are the most precise (intra-laboratory CVs ≤ 4.2%) and concordant (inter-laboratory CVs < 14%) community-derived absolute concentration values reported to date for four clinically used ceramides in the commonly analyzed SRM 1950. We demonstrate that calibration using authentic labelled standards dramatically reduces data variability. Furthermore, we show how the use of shared RM can correct systematic quantitative biases and help in harmonizing lipidomics. Collectively, the results from the present study provide a significant knowledge base for translation of lipidomic technologies to future clinical applications that might require the determination of reference intervals (RIs) in various human populations or might need to estimate reference change values (RCV), when analytical variability is a key factor for recall during multiple testing of individuals.

High-entropy fluorite oxides (HEFOs) show significant potential for thermal protection applications due to their advantageous combination of low thermal conductivity and high Yong’s modulus. However, the factors influencing its formation have not been well studied, and a systematic method for compositional design has not yet been established. In this paper, the effects of oxygen vacancy concentration (Ovac) and mean cation radius (r¯) on formability of HEFOs were investigated to develop a compositional design approach. The results indicate that an appropriate r¯ and Ovac is crucial for promoting the formability of single-phase (CaxCey1Zry2HfzSnzTiz)O2−δ HEFOs. High mass/size disorder and an appropriate Ovac (10%) result in (Ca0.2Ce0.14Zr0.12Hf0.18Sn0.18Ti0.18)O2−δ exhibiting the lowest thermal conductivity of 1.24 W·m−1·K−1. Building upon these insights and employing a valence combination strategy, three new single-phase HEFOs with low thermal conductivity were successfully designed and synthesized, namely, (La0.28Y0.28Ce0.18Zr0.18W0.08)O2−δ, (La0.3Y0.3Ce0.2Nb0.1Ta0.1)O2−δ, and (Yb0.52Ce0.12Zr0.12Sn0.12Nb0.12)O2−δ. This design approach will provide a valuable reference for the design of other high-entropy oxides.

Objectives: The objective of the present study was to investigate whether NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) and absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasomes pathways were involved in an experimental model of fibroblast activation named nemosis, which was used to mimic circumstances without bacteria stimulation. Methods: Nemosis of human dental pulp fibroblast (DPFs) was induced by three-dimensional culture in U-shaped 96-well plates and investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DPFs monolayers were used as control. Annexin V-FITC/7-AAD apoptosis assay was performed on the DPFs spheroids by flowcytometry. Caspase-1 activity detection assay was conducted on the DPFs spheroids. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), cytokine measurements, Western blot and the effect of COX-2 inhibitor on spheroids was studied. Results: SEM study observed human dental pulp fibroblast clusters and cell membranes damage on the surface of DPFs spheroids. The percentages of necrotic cells from DPFs spheroids gradually increased as the incubation time increased. A statistically significant increase in caspase-1 activity was observed after DPFs spheroids formation. Abstract Background Prediabetes mellitus (PreDM) is a high-risk state for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and often goes undiagnosed, which is closely associated with obesity and characterized by insulin resistance that urgently needs to be treated. Purpose To obtain a better understanding of the biological processes associated with both "spleen-dampness" syndrome individuals and those with dysglycaemic control at its earliest stages, we performed a detailed metabolomic analysis of individuals with various early impairments in glycaemic control, the results can facilitate clinicians’ decision making and benefit individuals at risk. Methods According to the diagnostic criteria of TCM patterns and PreDM, patients were divided into 4 groups with 20 cases, patients with syndrome of spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance and PreDM (PDMPXSK group), patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and PreDM (PDMSRYP group), patients with syndrome of spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance and normal blood glucose (NDMPXSK group), and patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and normal blood glucose (NDMSRYP group). Plasma samples from patients were collected for clinical index assessment and untargeted metabolomics using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Abstract Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative influenced by various clinical factors. The potential relationship between renal function and the risk of PD remains poorly understood. This study aims to explore the association between kidney function and the risk of developing PD. Methods A population-based cohort study was conducted using data from 400,571 UK Biobank participants. Renal function was assessed using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), calculated from serum creatinine and cystatin C levels. The association between eGFR levels and PD risk was evaluated using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) analysis, and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Additionally, a clinical prediction model was developed and its diagnostic accuracy was evaluated using ROC analysis. A heatmap was also constructed to examine the relationship between clinical factors and gray matter volume in various brain regions. Results Over a median observation period of 13.8 years, 2740 PD events were recorded. Abstract Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2) occur in 2H and rhombohedral (3R) polytypes, respectively distinguished by anti-parallel and parallel orientation of consecutive monolayer lattices. In its bulk form, 3R-MX2 is ferroelectric, hosting an out-of-plane electric polarisation, the direction of which is dictated by stacking. Here, we predict that twin boundaries, separating adjacent polarisation domains with reversed built-in electric fields, are able to host two-dimensional electrons and holes with an areal density reaching ~ 1013cm−2. Our modelling suggests that n-doped twin boundaries have a more promising binding energy than p-doped ones, whereas hole accumulation is stable at external surfaces of a twinned film. We also propose that assembling pairs of mono-twin films with a ‘magic’ twist angle θ * that provides commensurability between the moiré pattern at the interface and the accumulated carrier density, should promote a regime of strongly correlated states of electrons, such as Wigner crystals, and we specify the values of θ * for homo- and heterostructures of various TMDs.

Abstract Background The interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA) is an important laboratory diagnosis for latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection. The TB-IGRA measures the release of IFN-γ from peripheral blood cells, who are exposed to TB antigen (Ag), mitogen (MT), or negative/nil control (NL) in vitro. While, an exceptional higher TB Ag-NL level will reflect an elevation of peripheral lymphocytes released IFN-γ in a same condition. Therefore, we found that the elevated levels of TB Ag-NL could become a new biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods We have analyzed the clinical data of 776 children who are underwent TB-IGRA testing in the Department of Allergy and Rheumatology of Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center from 2018 to 2020. To investigate the association between TB Ag-NL and SLE, we have analyzed the clinical data of 47 SLE patients and TB Ag-NL testing results, and then evaluated the association between TB Ag-NL and SLE disease activity. Results The TB Ag-NL levels were significantly higher in patients with active SLE than those in inactive SLE (p = 0.0002). The TB Ag-NL levels were positively correlated with the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) and laboratory diagnosis parameters. The mean value of TB Ag-NL in SLE patients (0.04191 ± 0.07955, IU/mL) were significantly higher than those in patients with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) (0.0158 ± 0.0337, IU/mL, p = 0.036), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) (0.0162 ± 0.0388, IU/mL, p = 0.001), and healthy controls (HC) (0.0001 ± 0.0027, IU/mL, p = 0.0003). Therefore, the elevated TB Ag-NL levels could serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker of SLE, especially for the active SLE. Conclusion The detection of IFN-γ release levels by the TB-IGRA may be useful to assess SLE disease activity in pediatric patients with active SLE.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease that endangers people’s health, and China is a country with a high burden of tuberculosis. To accelerate the progress towards ending TB, the Chinese government implemented the End TB Action Plan (2019–2022), which consists of six actions. Among the End TB Action Plan, health promotion was conducted to improve the awareness of TB knowledge among Chinese people. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing TB health promotion activities outlined in the End TB Action Plan, and to provide recommendations for future TB prevention and control plan. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in nine Chinese provinces in 2022. A total of 11,920 Chinese people filled out the questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore that overall awareness of TB core information is associated with whether they received TB health education. Results The study involved 11,920 Chinese participants. The overall awareness rate of the core information of TB was 84.2%, which does not reach the 85% goal of the End TB Action Plan. The single awareness rate that TB is a chronic infectious disease and that the vast majority of TB patients can be cured were 75.3% and 76.0%. Participants who received TB health education had a higher awareness rate of TB core information. Participants who were elderly, retired or had a primary school education or below had poor awareness of the core information of TB. Participants who were elderly, lived in urban areas, were equipment operators or had a primary school education or below received less TB health education. Participants mainly received TB health education through TV (44.6%) and Internet (37.8%), preferred TV, broadcasts or movies (58.9%) and Internet advertising (54.7%). Participants preferred illustrated (46.2%) and audio-visual (44.8%) advertising materials. The common sources used to answer health-related questions on the internet were We-Medias (48.3%) and search engines (38.9%). Participants preferred to use short-form videos (66.8%) and illustrations (53.1%) to answer health-related questions. Conclusions Health promotion action for TB had a positive effect in China, but the awareness of TB was inadequate among Chinese people, and it is necessary to strengthen TB health education for those people. Moreover, TB prevention and control institutions should advertise TB more in audio-visual and illustrated forms on the Internet and audio-visual media. Health-related questions should be published in short-form video and illustrated forms in the We-Media and search engine more.

Abstract Vibrio vulnificus, a significant marine pathogen, undergoes opaque (Op)-translucent (Tr) colony switching based on whether capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is produced. CPS phase variation is sometime accompanied by genetic variation or down-regulation of particular genes, such as wzb. In addition, CPS prevents biofilm formation and is important to the virulence of V. vulnificus. However, the extent to which there is a difference in gene expression between Tr and Op colonies and the impact of CPS phase variation on other behaviors of V. vulnificus remain unknown. In this work, the data have shown that CPS phase variation of V. vulnificus is affected by incubation time. Tr and Op strains exhibited similar growth rates. However, Tr strains had enhanced biofilm formation capacities but reduced swimming motility compared to Op strains. The RNA-seq assay revealed 488 differentially expressed genes, with 214 downregulated and 274 upregulated genes, between Tr and Op colonies. Genes associated with Tad pili and CPS were downregulated, whereas those involved in flagellum were upregulated, in Tr colonies compared with Op colonies. In addition, 9 putative c-di-GMP metabolism-associated genes and 28 genes encoding putative regulators were significantly differentially expressed, suggesting that CPS phase variation is probably strictly regulated in V. vulnificus. Moreover, 8 genes encoding putative porins were also differentially expressed between the two phenotypic colonies, indicating that bacterial outer membrane was remodeled during CPS phase variation. In brief, this work highlighted the gene expression profiles associated with CPS phase variation, but more studies should be performed to disclose the intrinsic mechanisms in the future.

Abstract Background Elucidating the genetic variation underlying phenotypic diversity will facilitate improving production performance in livestock species. The Tibetan sheep breed in China holds significant historical importance, serving as a fundamental pillar of Qinghai’s animal husbandry sector. The Plateau-type Tibetan sheep, comprising 90% of the province’s population, are characterized by their tall stature and serve as the primary breed among Tibetan sheep. In contrast, Zhashijia sheep exhibit larger size and superior meat quality. These two species provide an excellent model for elucidating the genetic basis of body size variation. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a comprehensive genome-wide association study on these two Tibetan sheep breeds to identify single nucleotide polymorphism loci and regulatory genes that influence body size traits in Tibetan sheep. Result In this study, the phenotypic traits of body weight, body length, body height, chest circumference, chest depth, chest width, waist angle width, and pipe circumference were evaluated in two Tibetan sheep breeds: Plateau-type sheep and Zhashijia Tibetan sheep. Whole genome sequencing generated 48,215,130 high-quality SNPs for genome-wide association study. Four methods were applied and identified 623 SNPs significantly associated with body size traits. The significantly associated single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in this study are located near or within 111 candidate genes. These genes exhibit enrichment in the cAMP and Rap1 signaling pathways, significantly affecting animal growth, and body size. Specifically, the following genes were associated: ASAP1, CDK6, FRYL, NAV2, PTPRM, GPC6, PTPRG, KANK1, NTRK2 and ADCY8. Conclusion By genome-wide association study, we identified 16 SNPs and 10 candidate genes associated with body size traits in Tibetan sheep, which hold potential for application in genomic selection breeding programs in sheep. Identifying these candidate genes will establish a solid foundation for applying molecular marker-assisted selection in sheep breeding and improve our understanding of body size control in farmed animals.

Abstract Background Hematopoiesis in mammal is a complex and highly regulated process in which hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) give rise to all types of differentiated blood cells. Previous studies have shown that hairy and enhancer of split (HES) repressors are essential regulators of adult HSC development downstream of Notch signaling. Methods In this study, we investigated the role of HES1, a member of HES family, in fetal hematopoiesis using an embryonic hematopoietic specific Hes1 conditional knockout mouse model by using phenotypic flow cytometry, histopathology analysis, and functional in vitro colony forming unit (CFU) assay and in vivo bone marrow transplant (BMT) assay. Results We found that loss of Hes1 in early embryonic stage leads to smaller embryos and fetal livers, decreases hematopoietic stem progenitor cell (HSPC) pool, results in defective multi-lineage differentiation. Functionally, fetal hematopoietic cells deficient for Hes1 exhibit reduced in vitro progenitor activity and compromised in vivo repopulation capacity in the transplanted recipients. Further analysis shows that fetal hematopoiesis defects in Hes1 fl/fl Flt3Cre embryos are resulted from decreased proliferation and elevated apoptosis, associated with de-repressed HES1 targets, p27 and PTEN in Hes1-KO fetal HSPCs. Finally, pharmacological inhibition of p27 or PTEN improves fetal HSPCs function both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion Together, our findings reveal a previously unappreciated role for HES1 in regulating fetal hematopoiesis, and provide new insight into the differences between fetal and adult HSC maintenance.

Abstract Background Bone marrow fibrosis (BMF) severely impacts both the quality of life and the efficacy of diagnostic procedures. However, the correlation between BMF and clinicopathological features, cytogenetic changes, and prognosis of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) remains unclear. This study determined the incidence, patient characteristics, and clinical outcomes of patients with NDMM with BMF. Methods The clinical data, histological features, and clinical outcomes of patients with NDMM were collected. Reticular fiber staining was performed on the enrolled cases, and the degree of reticular fiber overgrowth was graded. Patients with MF-2 and MF-3 were classified as the BMF+ group, and those with MF-0 and MF-1 were classified as the BMF- group, and BMF incidence was calculated. The differences in clinical data, histological features, and clinical outcomes between the BMF+ group and the BMF– group were compared. Results A consecutive series of 146 patients with NDMM were included. The incidence of MF-0, MF-1, MF-2, and MF-3 was 7.53% (11/146), 34.93% (51/146), 51.37% (75/146), and 6.16% (9/146), respectively. The incidence of BMF—MF-2 and MF-3—was 57.53% (84/146). Abstract Background After China ended its ‘dynamic zero-COVID policy’ on 7 December 2022, a large-scale outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infections emerged across the country. We conducted a hospital-wide prospective study to document the epidemiological characteristics of the outbreak among healthcare workers in a hospital of Chengdu, where no previous staff SARS-CoV-2 infections were detected. Methods All hospital staff members were invited to complete an online questionnaire on COVID-19 in January 2023, and SARS-CoV-2 infection cases were followed up by telephone in June 2023 to collect data on long COVID. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results A total of 2,899 hospital staff (93.5%) completed the online questionnaire, and 86.4% were infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron. The clinical manifestations of these patients were characterized by a high incidence of systemic symptoms. Cough (83.4%), fatigue (79.8%) and fever (74.3%) were the most frequently reported symptoms. Multivariable logistic analysis revealed that females [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.42, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07–1.88] and clinical practitioners (aOR: 10.32, 95% CI: 6.57–16.20) were associated with an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, whereas advanced age ≥ 60 years (aOR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.19–0.49) and a three-dose COVID-19 vaccination with the most recent dose administered within 3 months before 7 December 2022 (aOR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.23–0.87 for within 1 month; aOR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.22–0.97 for within 1–3 months) were associated with reduced risk. Among the cases, 4.27% experienced long COVID of fatigue, brain fog or both, with the majority reporting minor symptoms. Conclusion Our findings provide a snapshot of the epidemiological situation of SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare workers in Chengdu after China’s deregulation of COVID-19 control. Data in the study can aid in the development and implementation of effective measures to protect healthcare workers and maintain the integrity of healthcare systems during challenging times such as a rapid and widespread Omicron outbreak.

Abstract Chemotherapy is currently one of the most effective methods in clinical cancer treatment. However, chemotherapy resistance is an important reason for poor chemotherapy efficacy and prognosis, which has become an urgent problem to be solved in the field of cancer chemotherapy. Therefore, it is very important to deeply study and analyze the mechanism of cancer chemotherapy resistance and its regulatory factors. Long non-coding RNA nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (LncRNA NEAT1) has been shown to be closely associated with chemotherapy resistance in cancer. NEAT1 induces cancer cell resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs by regulating cell apoptosis, cell cycle, drug transport and metabolism, DNA damage repair, EMT, autophagy, cancer stem cell characteristics, and metabolic reprogramming. This indicates that NEAT1 may be an important target to overcome chemotherapy resistance and is expected to be a potential biomarker to predict the effect of chemotherapy. This article summarizes the expression characteristics and clinical characteristics of NEAT1 in different cancers, and deeply discusses the regulatory role of NEAT1 in cancer chemotherapy resistance and related molecular mechanisms, aiming to clarify NEAT1 as a new target to overcome cancer chemotherapy resistance and the feasibility of chemotherapy sensitizers, with a view to providing a potential therapeutic direction for overcoming the dilemma of cancer resistance in the future.

Abstract Myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, is a serious condition caused by the abrupt stoppage of blood flow to a part of the heart, leading to tissue damage. A significant aspect of this condition is reperfusion injury, which occurs when blood flow is restored but exacerbates the damage. This review first addresses the role of the innate immune system, including neutrophils and macrophages, in the cascade of events leading to myocardial infarction and reperfusion injury. It then shifts focus to the critical involvement of CD4+ T helper cells in these processes. These cells, pivotal in regulating the immune response and tissue recovery, include various subpopulations such as Th1, Th2, Th9, Th17, and Th22, each playing a unique role in the pathophysiology of myocardial infarction and reperfusion injury. These subpopulations contribute to the injury process through diverse mechanisms, with cytokines such as IFN-γ and IL-4 influencing the balance between tissue repair and injury exacerbation. Understanding the interplay between the innate immune system and CD4+ T helper cells, along with their cytokines, is crucial for developing targeted therapies to mitigate myocardial infarction and reperfusion injury, ultimately improving outcomes for cardiac patients.

Abstract Background The Qinghai Tibetan sheep, a local breed renowned for its long hair, has experienced significant deterioration in wool characteristics due to the absence of systematic breeding practices. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying follicle development in order to genetically enhance wool-related traits and safeguard the sustainable utilization of valuable germplasm resources. However, our understanding of the regulatory roles played by coding and non-coding RNAs in hair follicle development remains largely elusive. Results A total of 20,874 mRNAs, 25,831 circRNAs, 4087 lncRNAs, and 794 miRNAs were annotated. Among them, we identified 58 DE lncRNAs, 325 DE circRNAs, 924 DE mRNAs, and 228 DE miRNAs during the development of medullary primary hair follicle development. GO and KEGG functional enrichment analyses revealed that the JAK-STAT, TGF-β, Hedgehog, PPAR, cGMP-PKG signaling pathway play crucial roles in regulating fibroblast and epithelial development during skin and hair follicle induction. Furthermore, the interactive network analysis additionally identified several crucial mRNA, circRNA, and lncRNA molecules associated with the process of primary hair follicle development. Ultimately, by investigating DEmir’s role in the ceRNA regulatory network mechanism, we identified 113 circRNA–miRNA pairs and 14 miRNA–mRNA pairs, including IGF2BP1-miR-23-x-novel-circ-01998-MSTRG.7111.3, DPT-miR-370-y-novel-circ-005802-MSTRG.14857.1 and TSPEAR-oar-miR-370-3p-novel-circ-005802- MSTRG.10527.1. Conclusions Our study offers novel insights into the distinct expression patterns of various transcription types during hair follicle morphogenesis, establishing a solid foundation for unraveling the molecular mechanisms that drive hair development and providing a scientific basis for selectively breeding desirable wool-related traits in this specific breed.

Abstract The cast thin sections of tight oil reservoirs contain important parameters such as rock mineral composition and content, porosity, permeability and stratigraphic characteristics, which are of great significance for reservoir evaluation. The use of deep learning technology for intelligent identification of thin section images is a development trend of mineral identification. However, the difficulty of making cast thin sections, the complexity of the making process and the high cost of thin section annotation have led to a lack of cast thin section images, which cannot meet the training requirements of deep learning image recognition models. In order to increase the sample size and improve the training effect of deep learning model, we proposed a generation and annotation method of thin section images of tight oil reservoir based on deep learning, by taking Fuyu reservoir in Sanzhao Sag as the target area. Firstly, the Augmentor strategy space was used to preliminarily augment the original images while preserving the original image features to meet the requirements of the model. Secondly, the category attention mechanism was added to the original StyleGAN network to avoid the influence of the uneven number of components in thin sections on the quality of the generated images. Then, the SALM annotation module was designed to achieve semi-automatic annotation of the generated images. Finally, experiments on image sharpness, distortion, standard accuracy and annotation efficiency were designed to verify the advantages of the method in image quality and annotation efficiency.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are prevalent in the elderly. The pathogenesis of NDDs is complex, and currently, there is no cure available. With the increase in aging population, over 20 million people are affected by common NDDs alone (Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease). Therefore, NDDs have profound negative impacts on patients, their families, and society, making them a major global health concern. Rho-associated kinases (ROCKs) belong to the serine/threonine protein kinases family, which modulate diverse cellular processes (e.g., apoptosis). ROCKs may elevate the risk of various NDDs (including Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease) by disrupting synaptic plasticity and promoting inflammatory responses. Therefore, ROCK inhibitors have been regarded as ideal therapies for NDDs in recent years. Fasudil, one of the classic ROCK inhibitor, is a potential drug for treating NDDs, as it repairs nerve damage and promotes axonal regeneration. Thus, the current review summarizes the relationship between ROCKs and NDDs and the mechanism by which fasudil inhibits ROCKs to provide new ideas for the treatment of NDDs.

Abstract Pharmacological agents regarding the most optimal treatments of acute pancreatitis remain. One‐carbon metabolism nutrients as therapeutic agents in many diseases might be involved in acute pancreatitis. The roles are acquired exploration in acute pancreatitis. We utilized Mendelian randomization to assess the causal impact of folate, homocysteine, and vitamin B12 (VB12) on acute pancreatitis. Wild‐type and corresponding genetically modified mouse models were used to verify the genetic correlating findings. A negative association between genetically predicted serum VB12 levels and risks of acute pancreatitis was identified in human population. The transcobalamin receptor (TCblR)/CD320 gene ablation that decreased cellular VB12 uptake and ATP production in pancreatic tissues promoted necrosis, resulting in much severe pathological changes of induced acute pancreatitis in mice. VB12 pretreatment and posttreatment dramatically increased ATP levels in pancreatic tissues and reduced the necrosis, then the elevated levels of amylase in serum, the levels of CK‐19, the activity of trypsin, and T lymphocyte infiltration in pancreatic tissues, prevented the pancreatic gross loss and ameliorated histopathological changes of mouse pancreases with induced acute pancreatitis. The results reveal that VB12 is potential as a therapeutic agent to inhibit tissue injuries and adaptive inflammatory responses in the pancreas in patients with acute pancreatitis.

In this study, a phosphorus-containing and polyether structure modifier, phenolic epoxy phosphate ester (PEPE), was prepared by the reaction of phenolic epoxy resin (EPN) and phosphoric acid. It was used to solve the trade-off dilemma of simultaneously improving the mechanical properties and flame resistance of flexible poly (vinyl chloride) (fPVC)/magnesium hydroxide (MH) composites. The peak heat release rate, total heat release, peak smoke production rate, and total smoke production of the fPVC/MHPEPE-5 (PEPE modified MH as filler) composite were decreased by 35.31 %, 49.2 %, 40.42 %, and 27.26 %, respectively, in comparison with the fPVC/MH composite. More importantly, the fPVC/MHPEPE-5 composite passed V-0 rating in the UL-94 test, while the fPVC and fPVC/MH composite passed V-2 and V-1 rating. The presence of phosphorus compounds in the condensed phase promoted the formation of a dense char residue of the fPVC/MHPEPE-5 composite. Therefore, the heat and flammable volatiles cannot migrate between the substrate zone and the combustion zone. In the gas phase, the dilution effect of H2O reduced the concentration of oxygen and combustible volatiles. The radicals quenching effect of the primary and secondary pyrolysis products of PEPE (such as PO· and PO2·) with ·H and ·OH. radicals played a crucial role in flame extinguishing and combustion termination. In addition, the scanning electron microscopy results showed that MHPEPE performed good compatibility with the fPVC matrix. The tensile and impact strength of the fPVC/MHPEPE-5 composite was 12.19 % and 19.26 % higher than that of the fPVC/MH composite, respectively.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulations serve as a multi-component pharmacological combination therapy with various potential targets and have collected extensive knowledge regarding the in vivo efficacy of treating cardiovascular disorders in clinical practice for thousands of years. However, the obscurity of the chemicals and the molecular mechanisms are impediments to their continued growth and globalization. Therefore, new modern medications based on the combination of beneficial TCM components with precise clinical efficacy are required. The goal of this study was to find the best combination of Achyranthes bidentata Blume (AB) and Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (PL) for hypertension with liver yang hyperactivity (HLYH). The integrated research consisting of principal component analysis (PCA), metabolomics, microbiology, and weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) were used to find the optimal combination of AB-PL combinations and reveal the mechanism of action. The result showed AB-PL (2:3) had a substantial protective impact on HLYH, as shown by lower blood pressure, improved liver yang hyperactivity, reduced cardiac remodeling and malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased NO content. Furthermore, the essential elements for AB-PL reducing hypertension may be related to 135 metabolites and 23 microorganisms. In conclusion, our findings support the efficacy of herbal remedies in the treatment of hypertension and provide some pharmacological evidence for the ongoing development of novel modern Chinese drugs for cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract Solution‐processed fluorescent organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are believed to be favorable for low‐cost, large‐area, and flexible displays but still suffer from the limited external quantum efficiency (EQE) below 5%. Herein, we demonstrate the EQE breakthrough by introducing a donor–acceptor type thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) polymer as the sensitizer for the typical green‐emitting fluorescent dopants. Benefitting from their matched energy alignment, the unwanted trap‐assisted recombination directly on fluorescent dopant is prevented to avoid the additional loss of triplet excitons. Indeed, triplet excitons are mainly formed on the polymeric TADF sensitizer via a Langevin recombination and then spin‐flipped to singlet excitons due to the good upconversion capability. Followed by an efficient Förster energy transfer, both singlet and triplet excitons can be harvested by fluorescent dopants, leading to a promising solution‐processed green hyperfluorescence with a record‐high EQE of 21.2% (72.2 cd/A, 59.7 lm/W) and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.32, 0.59). The results clearly highlight the great potential of solution‐processed fluorescent OLEDs based on TADF polymers as the sensitizer.

Abstract Though plenty of research has been conducted to improve the low intrinsic electronic conductivity of NASICON‐structured NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP), realizing sodium‐ion batteries with high areal/volumetric capacity still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a multiscale design from anode material to electrode structure is proposed to obtain a gadolinium‐ion‐doped and carbon‐coated NTP composite electrode (NTP‐Gd‐C), in which gadolinium ion doping, oxygen vacancy, optimized structure, N‐doped carbon coating, and bridging on the three‐dimensional network are simultaneously achieved. In the whole electrode, the excellent hierarchical electronic/ionic conductivity and structural stability are simultaneously improved via the synergistic optimization of NTP‐Gd‐C. As a result, excellent electrochemical performances of NTP‐Gd‐C electrode with a high areal/volumetric capacity of 1.0 mAh cm−2/142.8 mAh cm−3, high rate capability (58.3 mAh g−1 at 200 C), long cycle life (ultralow capacity fading of 0.004% per cycle under 10,000 cycles), and wide‐temperature electrochemical performances (97.0 mAh g−1 at 2 C under −20°C) are achieved. Moreover, the NTP‐Gd‐C//Na3V2(PO4)3/C full cell also delivers an excellent rate capacity of 42.0 mAh g−1 at 200 C and long‐term high‐capacity retention of 66.2% after 4000 cycles at 20 C.

BackgroundThis study collects and analyzes clinical data on enteral nutrition therapy in neurocritical patients, develops and validates a feeding intolerance (FI) risk prediction model, and provides a theoretical basis for screening patients with high risk of feeding intolerance (FI) and delivering personalized care.MethodsA convenience sampling method was employed to select 300 patients who were admitted to a tertiary hospital in China for early enteral nutrition therapy in the neurointensive care unit between April 2022 and December 2022. Independent risk factors for FI were identified using univariate and logistic regression analyses. A prediction model was established, and the goodness of fit and discriminant validity of the model were evaluated.ResultsThe incidence of FI in neurocritical patients receiving enteral nutrition was 71%. Abstract Chirality and luminescence are important for both chemistry and biology, which are highly influenced by aggregation. In this work, a pair of metalated tetraphenylethylene(TPE)‐based organic cage enantiomers are reported, which feature a quadrangular prismatic cage structure. These homochiral cages exhibit concentration‐dependent chiral behaviors alongside a propensity for thermodynamic aggregation. Aggregation caused quench effect is found for these cages accompanying the increasing of the concentrations. When a poor solvent is added to produce a kinetical aggregation, the aggregation‐annihilation circular dichroism and aggregation‐induced emission behaviors are observed for these enantiomeric cages. By comparing these observations with the photophysical behaviors of a pair of structurally similar organic molecular enantiomers, the unique photophysical properties observed are intricately linked to the metal‐integrated TPE‐functionalized cage structures.

Abstract BackgroundPrevious studies have proved the effectiveness of endoscopic screening in rural areas; however, long-term, high-quality evidence regarding the effectiveness of risk-adapted upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC) sequential screening strategies in resource-rich regions is currently lacking. ObjectiveThe objectives were to validate the effectiveness of risk-adapted sequential screening strategies in UGC prevention and control and assess the potential of sequential screening to lower mortality rates. MethodsBased on the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China, a prospective, large-scale cohort study based on population was conducted to recruit individuals from 4 cities in China from 2013‐2019. Those identified as having a high risk of UGC according to a validated risk-score model were advised to undergo endoscopy tests. Follow-up outcomes were tracked until June 2021. Incidence of UGC, UGC-related mortality, and all-cause mortality were evaluated between the screened and nonscreened cohorts. ResultsThe study included 153,079 participants at baseline. In total, 113,916 (74.42%) of the participants were designated as low risk of UGC. The remaining 39,163 (25.68%) participants were deemed to be at high risk of UGC and were offered gastroscopy tests. Among the high-risk participants, 9627 (compliance rate 24.6%) adhered to the gastroscopy tests. Over a median follow-up of 6.05 (IQR 3.06‐7.06) years, 622 UGC cases, 180 UGC deaths, and 1958 all-cause death cases were traced. The screened cohort exhibited the highest cumulative incidence of UGC (119.2 per 100,000 person-years), followed by the nonscreened and low-risk cohorts. Obvious reductions in both all-cause mortality and UGC mortality were observed between those who undertook screening (153.7 and 4.7 per 100,000 person-years, respectively) and the nonscreened group (245.3 and 27 per 100,000 person-years, respectively). The screening population showed a significant 36% and 82% reduction in both all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 0.64, 95% CI 0.49‐0.83, PPPPPPP ConclusionsOur study suggests the significance of one-off risk-adapted UGC screening in reducing both all-cause mortality and UGC mortality, particularly among high-risk individuals, indicating its effectiveness in UGC prevention and management.

Abstract The risk of information leaks increases as images become a crucial medium for information sharing. There is a great need to further develop the versatility of image encryption technology to protect confidential and sensitive information. Herein, using high spatial redundancy (strong correlation of neighboring pixels) of the image and the in situ encryption function of a quantum dot functionalized encryption camera, in situ image encryption is achieved by designing quantum dot films (size, color, and full width at half maximum) to modify the correlation and reduce spatial redundancy of the captured image during encryption processing. The correlation coefficients of simulated encrypted image closely apporach to 0. High‐quality decrypted images are achieved with a PSNR of more than 35 dB by a convolutional neural network‐based algorithm that meets the resolution requirements of human visual perception. Compared with the traditional image encryption algorithms, chaotic image encryption algorithms and neural network‐based encryption algorithms described previously, it provides a universal, efficient and effective in situ image encryption method.

ObjectiveAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by increasing prevalence, diverse impairments, and unclear origins and mechanisms. To gain a better grasp of the origins of ASD, it is essential to identify the most distinctive structural brain abnormalities in individuals with ASD.MethodsA Multi-Stage Progressive Feature Refinement Approach was employed to identify the most pivotal structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that distinguish individuals with ASD from typically developing (TD) individuals. The study included 175 individuals with ASD and 69 TD individuals, all aged between 7 and 18 years, matched in terms of age and gender. Both cortical and subcortical features were integrated, with a particular focus on hippocampal subfields.ResultsOut of 317 features, 9 had the most significant impact on distinguishing ASD from TD individuals. These structural features, which include a specific hippocampal subfield, are closely related to the brain areas associated with the reward system.ConclusionStructural irregularities in the reward system may play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of ASD, and specific hippocampal subfields may also contribute uniquely, warranting further investigation.

Abstract Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a chronic and progressive lung disease characterized by extensive alterations of cellular fate and function and excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix, leading to lung tissue scarring and impaired respiratory function. Although our understanding of its pathogenesis has increased, effective treatments remain scarce, and fibrotic progression is a major cause of mortality. Recent research has identified various etiological factors, including genetic predispositions, environmental exposures, and lifestyle factors, which contribute to the onset and progression of PF. Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms by which these factors interact to drive fibrosis are not yet fully elucidated. This review thoroughly examines the diverse etiological factors, cellular and molecular mechanisms, and key signaling pathways involved in PF, such as TGF‐β, WNT/β‐catenin, and PI3K/Akt/mTOR. It also discusses current therapeutic strategies, including antifibrotic agents like pirfenidone and nintedanib, and explores emerging treatments targeting fibrosis and cellular senescence. Emphasizing the need for omni‐target approaches to overcome the limitations of current therapies, this review integrates recent findings to enhance our understanding of PF and contribute to the development of more effective prevention and management strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Pear anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum bacteria, is a severe infectious disease that significantly impacts the growth, development, and fruit yield of pear trees. Early detection of pear anthracnose before symptoms manifest is of great importance in preventing its spread and minimizing economic losses. This study utilized hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology to investigate early detection of pear anthracnose through spectral features, vegetation indices (VIs), and texture features (TFs). Healthy and diseased pear leaves aged 1 to 5 days were selected as subjects for capturing hyperspectral images at various stages of health and disease. Characteristic wavelengths (OWs1 and OWs2) were extracted using the Successive Projection Algorithm (SPA) and Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) algorithm. Significant VIs were identified using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, while effective TFs were derived from the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). A classification model for pear leaf early anthracnose disease was constructed by integrating different features using three machine learning algorithms: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN). The results showed that: the classification identification model constructed based on the feature fusion performed better than that of single feature, with the OWs2-VIs-TFs-BPNN model achieving a highest accuracy of 98.61% in detection and identification of pear leaf early anthracnose disease. Additionally, to intuitively and effectively monitor the progression and severity of anthracnose in pear leaves, the visualization of anthracnose lesions was achieved using Successive Maximum Angle Convex Cone (SMACC) and Spectral Information Divergence (SID) techniques. According to our research results, the fusion of multi-source features based on hyperspectral imaging can be a reliable method to detect early asymptomatic infection of pear leaf anthracnose, and provide scientific theoretical support for early warning and prevention of pear leaf diseases.
