7. Microphysical processes under different hourly rainfall intensities in super typhoon Rammasun

Abstract

High-resolution numerical simulation data of super typhoon Rammasun simulated by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model was used to study the cloud microphysical processes under different hourly rainfall intensities. The grid points in the gale circle were categorized into four types (0–5, 5–20, 20–50, and 50- mm) based on hourly rainfall. The precipitation and microphysical characteristics under different types were investigated by diagnostic and statistical methods. The results showed that on the eve of the first landfall, extremely hourly heavy precipitation (50- mm type) was significantly enhanced compared to other types. The vertical movement was significantly reduced to the middle and lower troposphere which was very conducive to the relative movement and interaction of hydrometeors with the enhancement of the collision processes. The rainfall in the 5–20 and 20–50 mm types both mostly accounted for about 40% of the total rainfall in the gale circle, while that of the 0–5 and 50- mm types were generally smaller than the former two. As the rainfall intensity increased, the absolute conversion rates of all major cloud microphysical processes had shown increasing trends, especially the non-uniformity of Cnd (the condensation of water vapor to cloud water), Pracw (the accretion of cloud water by rain) and Dgacw (the accretion of cloud water by graupel). The relative contribution of Pgmlt (the melting of graupel) increased slightly and then decreased significantly from the 20–50 mm type (36.28%) to the 50- mm type (25.06%), while that of Pracw had significantly increased especially from the 20–50 mm type (41.77%) to the 50- mm type (50.97%), which was related to the upward motion characteristics.

Abstract

Nanomaterials have been widely applied to many fields because of their excellent photocatalytic performance. The performance is closely related to the catalytic kinetics, but it is not completely clear about the influencing regularities of shape and particle size on the photocatalytic kinetics of nanomaterials and the photocatalytic kinetic mechanism. In this paper, nano-CeO2 with different shapes and particle sizes were prepared, the kinetic parameters of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were determined, and the effects of shape and particle size on the kinetics of adsorption and photocatalysis and photocatalytic mechanism were discussed. The results show that the shape and particle size have significant influences. With the decreases of diameter, the performances of adsorption and photocatalysis of nano-CeO2 are improved; and these performances of spherical nano-CeO2 are greater than those of linear nano-CeO2. The shape and particle size have no effects on the kinetic order and mechanism of the whole photocatalytic process. Then a generalized mechanism of photocatalytic kinetics of nanomaterials was proposed and the mechanism rate equation was derived. Finally, the conclusion can be drawn: the desorption of photodegradation products is the control step of photocatalytic kinetics, and the kinetic order of photocatalytic degradation reaction is 1. Abstract

The desorption kinetic parameters (the desorption activation energy (Ed) and the desorption pre-exponential factor (A)) and the surface acidity (the strength and number of acid sites) of spherical and octahedral nano-SnO2 with different particle sizes for NH3 were measured by a temperature-programmed desorption method. Afterwards, the shape and size dependence of the desorption kinetic parameters and surface acidity of nano-SnO2 were discussed. The results show that shape and size have significant influences on the desorption kinetics and surface acidity of nano-SnO2. For the desorption on spherical or octahedral nano-SnO2, Ed, ln A, and the strength and number of acid sites increase with decreasing particle size. When the diameter is larger than 20 nm, Ed, ln A, and the number of surface acid sites are linearly related to the reciprocal of the particle size, respectively. For different shapes of nano-SnO2 with the same equivalent diameter, the desorption kinetic parameters of octahedral nanoparticles are larger than those of spherical ones, that is, Ed octahedron > Ed sphere and ln A octahedron > ln A sphere. The influence mechanism of shape and size on the desorption kinetic parameters of nano-SnO2 can be attributed to the influence of shape and particle size on the surface acidity of nano-SnO2.
