Significane The analysis of source-to-sink system is a comprehensive study of tectonic geology, sedimentology, and sequence stratigraphy. Because of its integral, dynamic, and semiquantitative-quantitative characteristics, it has attracted widespread attention. Progress This review first introduces the key issues of the deep-time source-to-sink systems (pre-Quaternary systems), which include the quantitative characterization of sediment mass balance and the control of the transport process on the sediment. Due to the lack of stratigraphic records and the difficulty in obtaining parameters, the research is still challenging.Second, it reviews the quantitation methods of deep-time source-to-sink systems that can be classified into three categories, namely, geochronology, uniformitarianism, and sedimentology. By obtaining information such as geomorphological parameters, hydraulic parameters, erosion rates, and sediment flux, various methods establish the quantitative relationships between "sources" and "sinks" and then rebuild the sedimentary basin infilling history. This article introduces the principles and related parameters of different methods and then compares the advantages and limitations to provide a reference for future research. It is believed that geochronology is widely used, and the core lies in provenance analysis. The key to uniformitarianism is the analogy of geological background and the selection of geological parameters. The sedimentology is controlled by multiple variables, and the tectonic-climate background and research scale need to be considered comprehensively. Conclusions and Prospects Finally, this review states the development of quantitative analysis of deep-time source-to-sink systems. Under the guidance of the important idea of "the present is the key to the past", the research needs to focus on the provenance systems, sediment routing systems, sediment dispersal, and redistributive process, and coupling relationship between various parameters. Research also needs to pay attention to quantitative analysis at multiple timescales and multidisciplinary dynamic analysis. Compared with continental margin source-to-sink systems, continental lacustrine source-to-sink system patterns and prediction models need to be further improved.

Through core observation, thin section identification, and logging and testing data analysis, the types and characteristics of event deposits in the ninth member of Yanchang Formation of Triassic (Chang 9 Member) in southwestern Ordos Basin, China, are examined. There are 4 types and 9 subtypes of event deposits, i.e. earthquake, gravity flow, volcanic and anoxic deposits, in the Chang 9 Member in the study area. Based on the analysis of the characteristics and distribution of such events deposits, it is proposed that the event deposits are generally symbiotic or associated, with intrinsic genetic relations and distribution laws. Five kinds of sedimentary microfacies with relatively developed event deposits are identified, and the genetic model of event deposits is discussed. Seismites are mainly developed in the lake transgression stage when the basin expands episodically, and commonly affected by liquefaction flow, gravity action and brittle shear deformation. Gravity flow, mainly distributed in the high water level period, sandwiched in the fine-grained sediments of prodelta or semi-deep lake, or creates banded or lobate slump turbidite fan. It is relatively developed above the seismites strata. The volcanic event deposits are only seen in the lower part of the Chang 9 Member, showing abrupt contact at the top and bottom, which reflects the volcanic activity at the same time. Anoxic deposits are mostly formed in the late stage of lake transgression to the highstand stage. Very thick organic-rich shales are developed in the highstand stage of Chang 9 Member, and the event deposits in the depositional period of these shales are conducive to potential reservoirs.

More and more attention has been paid to the sedimentary forward modeling (SFM) since the study on the sedimentology is targeted toward quantification, process orientation and systematization. This review first stated the main input and output data of the current sedimentary forward modeling and sorted out the determination methods of the input parameters. Then it reviewed the classification methods of the sedimentary forward modeling, and the classification principles included principle of simulation, number of simulation processes, types of simulation results, simulation dimension, simulation scale, data fidelity and source region covering source-sink system. Subsequently, it introduced the sedimentary forward modeling methods for the different sedimentary systems of clastic series, including hillside landform, river and deep-draft waterway, delta, lobe and landslide. It also described some classic simulation programs for the individual series, indicated the sedimentary characteristics of this series to be essentially simulated and their corresponding principles of simulation and covered multiple simulation methods as much as possible to expand the understanding of the sedimentary forward modeling. Finally, it looked into the development of the sedimentary forward modeling believed it would be targeted toward the three-dimension visualization, multi-process integration and multi-discipline integration, proposed to strengthen the training of compound talents in computer, mathematics, mechanics and geosciences; strengthened the experimental study on the sedimentary forward modeling hypothesis to study the sedimentation theory; tried multiple simulation methods and shifted the application foremost to the research and development foremost.

Based on the data of outcrops, seismic sections, thin sections, heavy mineral assemblages and detrital zircon U-Pb dating, the sedimentary characteristics, lake level fluctuation and provenance characteristics of the Middle Jurassic Lianggaoshan Formation (J2l) in eastern Sichuan Basin, SW China, were investigated to reveal the control of tectonic movements of the surrounding orogenic belts on the sedimentary systems. The J2l mainly developed a delta—lake sedimentary system, which contained a complete third-order sequence that was subdivided into four lake level up-down cycles (fourth-order sequence). The lake basins of cycles I and II were mainly distributed in eastern Sichuan Basin, while the lake basins of cycles III and IV migrated to central Sichuan Basin, resulting in the significant difference in sedimentary characteristics between the north and the south of eastern Sichuan Basin. The provenance analysis shows that there were three types of provenances for J2l. Specifically, the parent rocks of Type I were mainly acidic igneous rocks and from the proximal northern margin of the Yangtze Plate; the parent rocks of Type II were intermediate-acid igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks and from the central parts of the southern and northern Qinling orogenic belts; the parent rocks of Type III were mainly metamorphic rocks followed by intermediate—acid igneous rocks, and from the North Daba Mountain area. It is recognized from the changes of sedimentary system and provenance characteristics that the sedimentary evolution of J2l in eastern Sichuan Basin was controlled by the tectonic compression of the Qinling orogenic belt. In the early stage, the lake basin was restricted to the east of the study area, and Type I provenance was dominant. With the intensifying north-south compression of the Qinling orogenic belt, the lake basin expanded rapidly and migrated northward, and the supply of Type II provenance increased. In the middle and late stages, the uplift of the North Daba Mountain led to the lake basin migration and the gradual increase in the supply of Type III provenance.

Exploration and development of oil and gas is becoming increasingly difficult, and exploration targets and resource occurrence conditions are becoming more complex. Therefore, it is urgent to clarify the current situation and challenges of oil and gas exploration to evaluate the potential of domestic conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources, to illuminate the distribution characteristics of the remaining oil and gas resources, to evaluate and implement key exploration areas and favorable exploration zones, and to consolidate domestic oil and gas resources. In face of the new situation and new requirements, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has proposed five measures to strongly support oil and gas exploration. They have made 10 strategic discoveries and 10 major breakthroughs, and explored 15 large-scale reserves distributed in the central and western regions in China. Furthermore, proven reserves of oil and gas continued to grow at a high level. In this study, we summarized the oil-and-gas exploration situation, challenges and important measures of CNPC in the past ten years, and analyzed the potential and distribution of CNPC remaining oil and gas resources. The key areas and directions for oil-and-gas explorations of CNPC were discussed. It is indicated that the four areas of deep marine carbonate, lithologic strata, the lower reservoir-forming combination in the foreland thrust belt and shale oil are still the key points for breakthrough discoveries of future oil and gas exploration and large-scale reserves growth.

Alkaline-lacustrine deposition and its evolution model in Permian Fengcheng Formation at the Mahu sag, Junggar Basin were investigated through core and thin-section observation, geochemical and elemental analysis, logging response and lithofacies identification. Six lithofacies are developed in the Fengcheng Formation. The Feng 2 Member (P1f2) is dominated by lithofacies with alkaline minerals, while the upper part of the Feng 1 Member (P1f1) and the lower part of the Feng 3 Member (P1f3) are primarily organic-rich mudstones that are interbedded with dolomite and dolomitic rock. Paleoenvironment evolution of Fengcheng Formation can be divided into 5 stages, which was controlled by volcanic activity and paleoclimate. The first stage (the early phase of P1f1) was characterized by intensive volcanic activity and arid climate, developing pyroclastics and sedimentary volcaniclastic rocks. The secondary stage (the later phase of P1f1) had weak volcanic activity and humid climate that contributed to the development of organic-rich mudstone, forming primary source rock in the Fengcheng Formation. The increasing arid climate at the third stage (the early phase of P1f2) resulted in shrinking of lake basin and increasing of salinity, giving rise to dolomite and dolomitic rocks. The continuous aird climate, low lake level and high salinity at the fourth stage (the later phase of P1f2) generated special alkaline minerals, e.g., trona, indicating the formation of alkaline-lacustrine. The humid climate made lake level rise and desalted lake water, therefore, the fifth stage (P1f3) dominated by the deposition of terrigenous clastic rocks and dolomitic rocks. Migration and accumulation simulation of oil and gas in carrier systems has always been a difficult subject in the quantitative study of petroleum geology. In view of the fact that the traditional geological modeling technology can not establish the interrelation of carriers in three dimensional space, we have proposed a hybrid-dimensional mesh modeling technology consisting of body (stratum), surfaces (faults and unconformities), lines and points, which provides an important research method for the description of geometry of sand bodies, faults and unconformities, the 3D geological modeling of complex tectonic areas, and the simulation of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation. Furthermore, we have advanced a 3D hydrocarbon migration pathway tracking method based on the hybrid-dimensional mesh of the carrier system. The application of this technology in western Luliang Uplift of Junggar Basin shows that the technology can effectively characterize the transport effect of fault planes, unconformities and sand bodies, indicate the hydrocarbon migration pathways, simulate the process of oil accumulation, reservoir adjustment and secondary reservoir formation, predict the hydrocarbon distribution. It is found through the simulation that the areas around the paleo-oil reservoir and covered by migration pathways are favorable sites for oil and gas distribution. Since the “Tenth Five-Year Plan”, lithologic and stratigraphic reservoirs have been the main contribution of both the discovery as well as reserve and production increase in China; there were about 80% of proven reserves. The typical reservoirs in six major basins in the eastern, central, and western China were adopted as reservoir forming models. The reservoir forming models in three types of slopes, three types of depressions, and three types of lithologic reservoir assemblages have been built on the basis of application of new technologies, physical modeling of reservoir forming mechanism, and investigation to the formation and distribution of the reservoirs. The evaluation methods for large lithologic reservoirs provinces were established based on the forming mechanism and main controlling factors mentioned above. In addition, the study reveals the main controlling factors and the laws of enrichment of two types of stratigraphic reservoirs (pinch-out and weathered karst reservoirs) based on the evaluation methods for large stratigraphic reservoir provinces that have been established. By comprehensively understanding the laws of enrichment of lithologic-stratigraphic reservoirs in four types of basins, specific evaluation methods and fine exploration techniques have been developed. The findings led to an exploration direction in the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period. The study supported the exploration and selection of oil and gas plays, as well as promoted the exploration of lithologic and stratigraphic reservoirs. By dissecting thirty-six representative oil-gas reservoirs and analyzing accumulation conditions of giant oil and gas provinces in four prototype basins, including the Songliao Rift and Depression Basin, the Mesozoic Ordos Depression Basin, the Bohai Bay Rift and Depression Basin, the Mesozoic Junggar Depression Basin, the West Sichuan Foreland Basin and the Tarim Craton Basin, the hydrocarbon plays classification scheme of lithologic reservoirs is established and improved from the perspective of oil-gas accumulation zone and exploration target. The results reveal the accumulation characteristics and controlling factors of lithologic reservoirs including three kinds of slopes, three kinds of sag centers, three kinds of hydrocarbon accumulation assemblages and multiple genetic types. Based on the understandings on reservoir formation mechanisms and enrichment regularities of different hydrocarbon provinces, six major assessment indexes, parameter system and grading standard of lithologic plays are established, including hydrocarbon source rock condition, transportation pathway, reservoir condition, reservoir-cap assemblage, fluid property, and time-space configuration etc. Through comprehensive analysis of burial history, hydrocarbon-generation history, digenesis history, tectonic history, trap-forming history and accumulation history, plays of lithologic reservoirs are evaluated and optimized. The results show that the middle-shallow layers in the slope zones of the Songliao and Bohai Bay Basins oil-rich sags, the Mesozoic in the Ordos Basin, the Permian-Jurassic in the Junggar Basin, etc. are the major oil exploration areas in the future, with oil resources of about 42×108 t–67×108 t; the deep volcanic rocks of the Songliao Basin, the Carboniferous of the Junggar Basin, the Cambrian of the Tarim and Sichuan Basins, the Permian-Triassic reefs and shoals within the platform and on the platform margin of the Sichuan Basin are the major gas exploration areas in the future, with gas resources of about 1.5×1012 m3−2.0×1012 m3. This paper gives a contrastive analysis of the main progress made in petroliferous basins sedimentary geology domestically and internationally, and discusses the main problems and their solutions in the development of petroliferous basins sedimentology in China, New developments include coarse-grained depositional sysytem, shallow-water deltic depositional system, beach bar depositional system, deep-water gravity flows, fine-grained depositional system, carbonate reefs, mixosedimentite, microbialite, seismic sedimentology and sedimentary physical simulation. It also reveals the developing gap of Chinese sedimentology in the areas of microbialite and sedimentary simulation, etc. and analyzes the sedimentary features and paleogeography pattern of prototype basins, multi-scale paleogeographic recovery during major tectonic movements, the different explanation of new sedimentology theories in the deep-buried sandbodies development. The paper details the difficulties when it comes to the typical depositional systems combination and the setup of sedimentary models in China. Therefore, the developing tendency is described of sedimentology theories like source to sink, sedimentary dynamics as well as regional sedimentology in China, seismic sedimentology, and studying methods and technologies in sedimentary simulation. Feldspar dissolution is a common feature in clastic rock reservoirs of petroliferous basins and has an important influence on reservoir quality. However, the effect of feldspar dissolution on reservoir quality varies under different depositional environments and diagenetic systems. The study area in this paper is located in the Baikouquan Formation in the northwestern margin of the Junggar Basin, which is significantly influenced by feldspar dissolution. Based on the analyses of core and thin section observations, QEMSEM, XRD, SEM, CL, fluorescence, and image analysis software combined with logging and physical property data, this study shows that feldspar dissolution in the subaqueous distributary channel of a fan delta plain, which has good original physical properties and low mud contents, significantly improves the properties of the reservoir. The main reasons for this are as follows: (1) the sedimentary facies with good original properties and low mud content is a relatively open system in the burial stage. The acidic fluids needed for feldspar dissolution are mostly derived from organic acids associated with the source rocks and migrate to the good-permeability area of the reservoir; (2) the by-products of feldspar dissolution, such as authigenic clay minerals and authigenic quartz, are transported by pore water in a relatively open diagenetic system and then precipitated in a relatively closed diagenetic system; and (3) the clay minerals produced by feldspar dissolution in different diagenetic environments and diagenetic stages have different effects on the reservoir. When the kaolinite content is less than 3%, the illite content is less than 4%, and the chlorite content is less than 12%, the clay minerals have a positive effect on the porosity. These clay minerals can reduce porosity and block pore throats when their contents are larger than these values.

Based on the development of sedimentology and its industrial application, research demands on the sedimentary reservoirs in the oil and gas exploration and development in the future are summarized, and the future key research fields and directions are put forward as well. Recently, sedimentology in China has achieved a number of accomplishments: Lithofacies paleogeography and a new model of sandbody in shallow water delta of depositional basins during significant tectonic movements have been built, expanding the fields of oil and gas exploration. New knowledge of deep-water sedimentary sandbody distribution has sustained significant discoveries in (ultra-)deep water area and lacustrine basin center. New cognition of (ultra-)deep reservoir mechanism extends the depth of oil and gas exploration and development. New progresses on development pattern of organic-rich shale and study of unconventional reservoirs make a series of major breakthroughs in unconventional oil and gas exploration and development. Multi-scale development geological modeling predicts the distribution of remaining oil effectively. New techniques and methods of sedimentary reservoirs provide a foundation for the development of the sedimentology theory and its industrial application. In the future development of sedimentology, it is necessary to make progress in traditional sedimentology, to innovate fine-grained sedimentology and unconventional reservoir geology and to provide a foundation for sedimentary prototype basin restoration, organic-rich shale area evaluation, favorable reservoir prediction and favorable target area optimization, promoting the continuous innovations on sedimentology. The Chang 7 Member of Triassic Yanchang Formation in Ordos Basin is taken as an example to study the distribution rule and major controlling factors of the fine-grained sedimentary system by core description, thin section observation, X-ray diffraction, geochemical testing and TOC well logging quantitative calculation. The main sedimentary pattern of organic-rich shale in Chang 7 Member is transgression–water stratification. The sedimentary facies, water depth, anoxic condition and lacustrine flow are the major controlling factors for the formation and distribution of organic-rich shale. During the deposition of the Chang 73 Member, lake water invaded rapidly, lake depth and scope sharply increased. Because of the temperature difference, the circulation between upper surface water and lower water in deep lake was restrained, then large-area anoxic environment was formed in deep lake, which was favorable for the development of organic-rich shale. In silent deep lake where is far away from the delta front, organic-rich shale well developed, with high organic carbon content and mainly type I kerogen. In deep lake where sandy debris flows developed, organic-rich shale was inter-bedded with sandstone, which contains high organic carbon content, mainly with type I-II1 kerogen. In semi-deep lake close to the delta front, wavy-massive silty mudstone developed, mainly with type II kerogen. Based on observation of cores and thin slices and analysis of drilling, log and test data, the gravity flow deposits characteristics and formation conditions and characteristics of tight oil in lower first member of Shahejie Formation (Es1x) were systematically analyzed in Qikou Sag, Huanghua depression, Bohai Bay Basin. There mainly developed sandy debris flow, muddy debris flow and classical turbidity flow in the study area, and sandstone with boulder-clay is mostly sandy debris flow origin, muddy debris flow deposits are mudstone or silty mudstone with sandy lumps, the normal graded bedding is a reliable sign of classical turbidite. Affected by multi-source supply, slope break, different trigger mechanism and fluctuation of lake level, multi-gravity flows formed multi-level fans in mid-low slope to main sag, which can be divided into five micro-facies including submerged main channel, submerged distributary channel, lateral channel margin, mud between channels and turbidite sheet sand. Multi-level and multi-stage gravity flow sediments provide material foundations for tight oil and gas in the deep mud and sand-rich lake, where wide spread tight reservoirs and high quality source rocks contact closely vertically, forming multiple sets of sandwich-like source-reservoir-seal assemblages. Exploration shows that the submerged distributary channel and turbidite sheet sand of sandy debris flow are two main exploration facies of gravity flow in Es1x and important area of scale reserve increase in slope zones of Qikou Sag. Based on the latest global conventional-unconventional petroleum development situation and the conclusion of petroleum geology theory and technology innovation in recent 10 years, the connotation of conventional and unconventional petroleum “orderly accumulation” connotation is formulated. This concept indicates that, unconventional petroleum occurs in the hydrocarbon supply direction of conventional petroleum, and conventional petroleum may appear in the outer space of unconventional petroleum. Proper evaluation methods and engineering technology are important to push the conventional-unconventional petroleum co-development, and the petroleum finding thought from outer-source into inner-source. Unconventional petroleum evaluation focuses on source rocks characteristics, lithology, physical property, brittleness, oil-gas possibility and stress anisotropy. Taking shale gas for examples, in China, these six properties are TOC>2%, laminated silicious calcareous shale or calcareous silicious shale, porosity 3%-8%, brittle minerals content 50%-80%, gas content 2.3-4.1 m3/t, pressure coefficient 1.0-2.3, natural fractures; in north America, these six properties are TOC>4%, silicious shale or calcareous shale or marl, porosity 4%-9%, brittle minerals content 40%-70%, gas content 2.8-9.9 m3/t, pressure coefficient 1.3-1.85, natural fractures. “Sweet spot area” assessment, “factory-like” operation pattern and other core evaluation methods and technologies are discussed. And 8 key elements of unconventional “sweet spot area” are proposed, 3 of them are TOC>2% (for shale oil S1>2 mg/g), higher porosity (for tight oil & gas >10%, shale oil & gas >3%), and microfractures. Multiple wells “factory-like” operation pattern is elaborated, and its implementation needs 4 elements, i.e. batch well spacing, standard design, flow process, and reutilization. Through horizontal well volume fractures in directions, “man-made reservoirs” with large-scale fracture systems can be formed underground. For “shale oil revolution” in future, non-water “gas in critical state” and etc. fracturing fluid and matching technology should be stressed to be industrially tested and encouraged to be low cost developed. Petroleum geology is evolving into two branches, conventional petroleum geology and unconventional petroleum geology, with the latter becoming a new theoretical frontier in the petroleum industry. The core of conventional hydrocarbon geological study is based on identifying the match between source rock, reservoir, caprock, migration, trap, preservation and timing; the core of unconventional hydrocarbon geological study evaluates if the oil and gas is part of a continuous accumulation, where stress is placed on the evaluation of “lithology, physical properties, brittleness, oiliness, source rock features, stress anisotropy” and their configuration. The oil and gas accumulation mode and theoretical formula at various low limits of pore throat diameter have been established, as well as the “L” type production curve. Theoretical production prediction models for unconventional oil and gas, and formation mechanism and development patterns for unconventional oil and gas are being revealed. The connotation, characteristics, potential and technology for unconventional oil and gas have been observed, and two key marks to identify unconventional hydrocarbon have been put forward: (1) continuous distribution of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs over a large area, with no obvious trap boundary; and (2) no natural stable industrial production, and no obvious Darcy flow. Systematic research shows that the proportion of global unconventional to conventional hydrocarbon resources is 8:2, in which the unconventional oil is almost equal to conventional oil, and the unconventional gas is about 8 times that of conventional gas. In China, unconventional oil resources are about 240×108 t and unconventional gas resources are about 100×1012 m3. In recent years the development of tight gas and tight oil should be strengthened to realize industrial reserves and increase production. Construction of shale gas pilot plants and shale oil research should be strengthened. Unconventional oil and gas industrial systems and research should be set up, including unconventional hydrocarbon geology, fine particle sedimentology, unconventional reservoir geology, seismic reservoir prediction, massive fracturing of horizontal wells, “factory-like” operation, low cost management and subsidy policy and personnel training. To get a better understanding of the distribution pattern of favorable reservoir belts in the medium-deep clastic rocks in the Qikou sag of the Huanghua depression, and find out premium reservoir zone, the characteristics and controlling factors of the medium-deep reservoirs in the Qikou sag were analyzed. Comprehensive study into the structural setting, provenance, depositional system, and reservoir properties shows that the Paleogene in the Qikou sag has multi-sags and multi-slopes, with slopes accounting for over 70% of the total sag area. A number of large braided river (fan) delta front - gravity flow sand bodies matching with multi-slope zones lay a good material foundation for the formation of medium-deep effective reservoirs there. Generally buried at over 2500 m, the medium-deep clastic rocks are lithic feldspathic sandstone, with secondary pores and cracks as major reservoir space. Being in the medium diagenesis evolution stage, the medium-deep clastic rocks in the Qikou sag span over a large depth. Nine major factors affecting reservoir properties have been identified by mathematical geology. Although the medium-deep clastic rock interval is poor in physical properties and complex in pore structure, high sedimentation rate, medium geothermal field, high fluid pressure, high feldspar content, relatively high dissolution rate and early oil and gas charge have given rise to three to four belts with abnormally high porosity in it, which are all favorable hydrocarbon reservoir zones. As an important type of “conventional–unconventional orderly accumulation”, shale oil is mature oil stored in organic-rich shales with nano-scale pores. This paper analyzes and summarizes elementary petroleum geological issues concerning continental shale oil in China, including sedimentary environment, reservoir space, geochemical features and accumulation mechanism. Mainly deposited in semi-deep to deep lake environment, shale rich in organic matter usually coexists with other lithologies in laminated texture, and micron to nano-scale pores and microfractures serve as primary reservoir space. Favorable shale mainly has type I and IIA kerogens with a Ro of 0.7%–2.0%, TOC more than 2.0%, and effective thickness of over 10 m. The evolution of shale pores and retained accumulation pattern of shale oil are figured out. Reservoir space, brittleness, viscosity, pressure, retained quantity are key parameters in the “core” area evaluation of shale oil. Continuously accumulated in the center of lake basins, continental shale oil resources in China are about 30×108–60×108 t by preliminary prediction. Volume fracturing in horizontal wells, reformation of natural fractures, and man-made reservoir by injecting coarse grains are some of the key technologies for shale oil production. A three step development road for shale oil is put forward, speeding up study on “shale oil prospective area”, stepping up selection of “core areas”, and expanding “test areas”. By learning from marine shale breakthroughs in North America, continental shale oil industrialization is likely to kick off in China. By comparison of the types, geological characteristics and exploration technologies of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon, this paper proposes the concept of “nano-hydrocarbon” and regard nano-hydrocarbon as the development direction of oil and gas industry in the future. Nano-hydrocarbon refers to the research and production, by nano-technology, of oil and gas accumulated in the reservoir system of nano-sized pore-throats. It is mainly distributed in source rocks and the neighbouring tight reservoirs and includes shale oil, shale gas, coal-bed methane, tight sandstone oil and gas, tight limestone oil and so on, with nano-sized diameter of pore-throats in reservoirs. Oil, gas and water in nano-sized pore-throats exhibit poor percolation and phase separation, and are mainly driven by ultra-pressure, thus existing pervasively and continuously in the coexisting tight source and reservoir rocks. China's petroliferous basins develop multiple series such as coexisting tight source and reservoir, carbonate fractures and cavities, volcanic fractures and cavities, and metamorphic rock fractures. Among the series, the first type is located in the center or on the slopes of the basins, where nano-hydrocarbons are accumulated extensively within or near sources and are dominant potential sources. With accumulations within coexisting source and reservoir in the Ordos Basin and Sichuan Basin as examples, the method of “two lines and one area” to prospect continuous-type hydrocarbon accumulation is proposed, i.e. the top and bottom boundaries of a set of coexisting source and reservoir and the boundaries of hydrocarbon accumulation as lines, and “sweet spot” distributing core area as the main exploration target. The southwest margin of the Qikou Sag is a flexural gentle slope formed by the deformation of a drape structure due to its underlying basement lifting. The sedimentary period of the Lower Member 1 of Shahejie Formation is the maximum extensional time of the Paleogene lacustrine basin. Debris from source areas is in shortage. In the broad littoral shallow lake, hundreds of square kilometers of lacustrine carbonates are deposited and distributed stably. The main lithologies of the sediments are biolithite and dolomite (micritic dolomite and dolomitic limestone), and the dolomites are mainly middle late buried dolomite and penecontemporaneous dolomite. Their distribution area is more than 1 650 m2, the cumulative thickness is between 5 and 25 meters, and the average thickness is about 10 meters. Intercrystal pores, intergranular pores, corrosion pores and frequent fissures are developed in the medium porosity and low permeability dolomite reservoirs. The dolomites alternate with oil shale and dark mudstone, favorable for the charge of low mature hydrocarbons and the formation of large scale accumulations. Drilling exploration practices show that the lacustrine dolomite reservoirs are characterized by medium burial depth and regional petroleum accumulation and are a new exploration area for Paleogene oil and gas.
