Harmful algal blooms (HABs) resulting from eutrophication pose a major threat to ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective control measures. Allelochemicals have shown their importance in slowing down algal proliferation due to their proven efficacy and low ecological impacts. In this study, allelopathy tea polyphenols (TPs) and β-cyclodextrin were combined to prepare slow-release algicidal microcapsules, and the diversity of microbial community in the algal inhibition process was analyzed. Results showed that TP slow-release microcapsules had strong algicidal activity. When against Microcystis aeruginosa within 20 d, their constant inhibitory rate was up to 99% compared to the control group. Microbial diversity decreased with an increase in algae density, and the species richness and diversity of algae increased under the stress of TP slow-release microcapsules. The redundancy analysis showed that the environmental factors with impacts on the abundance and diversity of bacterial communities in descending order were dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of TP slow-release microcapsules to actual water.

Abstract Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most disabling neurological conditions, afflicting thousands of human beings. Edaravone, a well-known reactive oxygen species scavenger, is expanding its new scope in field of SCI. The objective of this systematic review is to determine the neuroprotective effects and discuss the underlying mechanism of edaravone in management of SCI. Methods The systematic review will include the controlled studies evaluating the neurological roles of edaravone on experiment rat models following SCI. The primary outcome will be the 21-point Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan locomotor rating scale. The secondary outcomes will include the preservation of white matter areas and malondialdehyde levels. Two researchers will independently search PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library from their inception date. Following study selection, data extraction, and assessment of methodological quality in included studies using the SYRCLE’s RoB tool, data from eligible studies will be pooled and analyzed using random-effects models with RevMan 5.3 software. In case of sufficient data, subgroup analyses with respect to species, age, gender, injury characteristics, or administration details will be carried out to explore the factors modifying efficacy of edaravone. For exploring the appropriate dose of edaravone, a network meta-analysis approach will be conducted based on the Bayesian method. Importantly, the proposed mechanisms and changes of related molecules will be also extracted from included studies for comprehensively investigating the mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of edaravone. Discussion In this study, we aim to quantitatively analyze the role of edaravone in locomotor recovery and tissue damage in SCI rat model. The efficacy of edaravone in distinct scenarios will be investigated by subgroup analyses, and we expect to predict the candidate dose that offers a superior treatment effect using network meta-analyses. Moreover, a comprehensive framework regarding the neuroprotective mechanisms behind edaravone will be constructed via a combination of systematic and traditional review. This study will bring implications for future preclinical studies and clinical applications of SCI. Nonetheless, in light of the anticipated limitations in animal experimental design and methodological quality, the results in this review should be interpreted with caution.

Astaxanthin (AST), a natural nutritional supplement with powerful antioxidant activities, is finding its new application in the field of SCI. Here, we performed a systematic review to assess the neurological roles of AST in rats following SCI, and assessed the potential for clinical translation. Searches were conducted on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang data, Vip Journal Integration Platform, and SinoMed databases. Animal studies that evaluated the neurobiological roles of AST in a rat model of SCI were included. A total of 10 articles were included; most of them had moderate-to-high methodological quality, while the overall quality of evidence was not high. Abstract Objective Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common allergic disorder, afflicting thousands of human beings. Aberrant mitochondrial dynamics are important pathological elements for various immune cell dysfunctions and allergic diseases. However, the connection between mitochondrial dynamics and AR remains poorly understood. This study aimed to determine whether mitochondrial dynamics influence the inflammatory response in AR. Methods In the present study, we established a murine model of AR by sensitization with ovalbumin (OVA). Then, we investigated the mitochondrial morphology in mice with AR by transmission electron microscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy, and evaluated the role of Mdivi‐1 (an inhibitor of mitochondrial fission) on allergic symptoms, inflammatory responses, allergic‐related signals, and reactive oxygen species formation. Results There was a notable enhancement in mitochondrial fragmentation in the nasal mucosa of mice following OVA stimulation, whereas Mdivi‐1 prevented aberrant mitochondrial morphology. Indeed, Mdivi‐1 alleviated the rubbing and sneezing responses in OVA‐sensitized mice. Compared with vehicle‐treated ones, mice treated with Mdivi‐1 exhibited a reduction in interleukin (IL)‐4, IL‐5, and specific IgE levels in both serum and nasal lavage fluid, and shown an amelioration in inflammatory response of nasal mucosa. Meanwhile, Mdivi‐1 treatment was associated with a suppression in JAK2 and STAT6 activation and reactive oxygen species generation, which act as important signaling for allergic response. Conclusion Our findings reveal mitochondrial dynamics modulate the allergic responses in AR. Mitochondrial dynamics may represent a promising target for the treatment of AR.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition with few treatment options. Metformin, a classical antidiabetic and antioxidant, has extended its application to experimental SCI treatment. Here, we performed a systematic review to evaluate the neurobiological roles of metformin for treating SCI in rats, and to assess the potential for clinical translation. PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang data, SinoMed, and Vip Journal Integration Platform databases were searched from their inception dates to October 2021. Two reviewers independently selected controlled studies evaluating the neurobiological roles of metformin in rats following SCI, extracted data, and assessed the quality of methodology and evidence. Pairwise meta-analyses, subgroup analyses and network analysis were performed to assess the roles of metformin in neurological function and tissue damage in SCI rats. Twelve articles were included in this systematic review. Most of them were of moderate-to-high methodological quality, while the quality of evidence from those studies was not high. Generally, Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores were increased in rats treated with metformin compared with controls, and the weighted mean differences (WMDs) between metformin and control groups exhibited a gradual upward trend from the 3rd (nine studies, n = 164, WMD = 0.42, 95% CI = −0.01 to 0.85, P = 0.06) to the 28th day after treatment (nine studies, n = 136, WMD = 3.48, 95% CI = 2.04 to 4.92, P < 0.00001). Metformin intervention was associated with improved inclined plane scores, tissue preservation ratio and number of anterior horn motor neurons. Subgroup analyses indicated an association between neuroprotection and metformin dose. Network meta-analysis showed that 50 mg/kg metformin exhibited greater protection than 10 and 100 mg/kg metformin. The action mechanisms behind metformin were associated with activating adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase signaling, regulating mitochondrial function and relieving endoplasmic reticulum stress. Collectively, this review indicates that metformin has a protective effect on SCI with satisfactory safety and we demonstrate a rational mechanism of action; therefore, metformin is a promising candidate for future clinical trials. However, given the limitations of animal experimental methodological and evidence quality, the findings of this pre-clinical review should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract Lilium is a large genus that includes approximately 110 species distributed throughout cold and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The species-level phylogeny of Lilium remains unclear; previous studies have found universal markers but insufficient phylogenetic signals. In this study, we present the use of complete chloroplast genomes to explore the phylogeny of this genus. We sequenced nine Lilium chloroplast genomes and retrieved seven published chloroplast genomes for comparative and phylogenetic analyses. The genomes ranged from 151,655 bp to 153,235 bp in length and had a typical quadripartite structure with a conserved genome arrangement and moderate divergence. A comparison of sixteen Lilium chloroplast genomes revealed ten mutation hotspots. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for any two Lilium chloroplast genomes ranged from 8 to 1,178 and provided robust data for phylogeny. Except for some of the shortest internodes, phylogenetic relationships of the Lilium species inferred from the chloroplast genome obtained high support, indicating that chloroplast genome data will be useful to help resolve the deeper branches of phylogeny.

The bsd-pg (bundle sheath defective pale green) mutant is a novel maize mutation, controlled by a single recessive gene, which was isolated from offspring of maize plantlets regenerated from tissue callus of the maize inbred line 501. The characterization was that the biogenesis and development of the chloroplasts was mainly interfered in bundle sheath cells rather than in mesophyll cells. For mapping the bsd-pg, an F2 population was derived from a cross between the mutant bsd-pg and an inbred line Xianzao 17. Using specific locus amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-Seq) technology, a total of 5 783 polymorphic SLAFs were analysed with 1 771 homozygous alleles between maternal and paternal parents. There were 49 SLAFs, which had a ratio of paternal to maternal alleles of 2:1 in bulked normal lines, and three trait-related candidate regions were obtained on chromosome 1 with a size of 3.945 Mb. For the fine mapping, new simple sequence repeats (SSRs) markers were designed by utilizing information of the B73 genome and the candidate regions were localized a size of 850 934 bp on chromosome 1 between umc1603 and umc1395, including 35 candidate genes. These results provide a foundation for the cloning of bsd-pg by map-based strategy, which is essential for revealing the functional differentiation and coordination of the two cell types, and helps to elucidate a comprehensive understanding of the C4 photosynthesis pathway and related processes in maize leaves.

High resolution radars require signals with large time-bandwidth product such as CW signal and coherent pulse train (CPT). We discuss a phase-coded interrupted CW (ICW) signal which is the combination of CW signal and CPT. Phase codes used here are with perfect periodic autocorrelation. The periodic ambiguity function of ICW signals is studied including single-carrier signal and multi-carrier signal. It is interesting that the gate function has different effects on two signals and contributes to a multi-carrier ICW signal which yields nearly perfect autocorrelation. Meanwhile we also suggest an efficient receiver approach to ICW signals, which can reduce the computational burden of the processor and utilize the good properties of P3 and P4 codes.

Background Important predictive value of platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for adverse outcomes of cardiovascular disease has been proved in previous studies, however, the predictive value of PLR for short-term prognosis in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains to be explored. Objective To determine the predictive ability of PLR for mortality risk during hospitalization in elderly patients with AMI. Methods The medical history data of 1 423 elderly patients with AMI treated in the Department of Cardiology of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University from December 2015 to December 2021 was retrospectively collected, mainly including gender, age, BMI, blood pressure classification, glycated hemoglobin, platelet count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, estimated glomerular filtration rate, lipid related indices, the combination of heart failure and diabetes, the use of statins and antiplatelet agents during hospitalization, with the final outcome defined as all-cause death during hospitalization. The included patients were divided into the non-death group (n=1 315) and death group (n=108) according to the occurrence of death. ROC curve was used to determine the predictive ability of PLR for in-hospital mortality risk in elderly patients with AMI, and the clinical application value of PLR and its combined indicators by decision curve analysis (DCA) .
