The application of fungicides is an effective strategy for controlling plant diseases. Among these agents, plant-derived antifungal metabolites are particularly promising due to their eco-friendly and sustainable nature. Plant secondary metabolites typically exhibit broad-spectrum antifungal activity without selective toxicity against pathogens. However, only a small fraction of antifungal metabolites have been identified from the tens of thousands of known plant secondary metabolites. In this study, we conducted a metabolomic analysis on both blast-resistant (Digu) and -susceptible (Lijiangxintuanheigu) rice varieties to uncover novel metabolites that enhance blast resistance. We found that 24 and 48 h post-inoculation with Magnaporthe oryzae were critical time points for metabolomic profiling, based on the infected status of M. oryzae in rice and the observed differences in shikimate accumulation between the two varieties. Following metabolomic analysis, we identified nine flavonoids that were differentially accumulated and are considered potential candidates for disease control. Among these, apigenin-7-glucoside, rhamnetin, and spireoside were found to be effective in controlling blast disease, with spireoside demonstrating the most pronounced efficacy. We discovered that spireoside controlled blast disease by inhibiting both spore germination and appressorium formation in M. oryzae, primarily through disrupting cell membrane integrity. However, spireoside did not induce rice immunity. Furthermore, spireoside was also effective in controlling sheath blight disease. Thus, spireoside shows considerable promise as a candidate for the development of a fungicide for controlling plant diseases.

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe encephalopathy caused by Plasmodium parasite infection, resulting in thousands of annual deaths and neuro-cognitive sequelae even after anti-malarial drugs treatment. Despite efforts to dissect the mechanism, the cellular transcriptomic reprogramming within the spatial context remains elusive. Here, we constructed single-cell and spatial transcriptome atlases of experimental CM (ECM) male murine brain tissues with or without artesunate (ART) treatment. We identified activated inflammatory endothelial cells during ECM, characterized by a disrupted blood-brain barrier, increased antigen presentation, and leukocyte adhesion. We also observed that inflammatory microglia enhance antigen presentation pathway such as MHC-I to CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. The latter underwent an inflammatory state transition with up-regulated cytokine expression and cytotoxic activity. Multi-omics analysis revealed that the activated interferon-gamma response of injured neurons during ECM and persisted after ART treatment. Overall, our research provides valuable resources for understanding malaria parasite-host interaction mechanisms and adjuvant therapy development. Nitrogen fertilizer application is an important method for the production of high-quality maize. However, nitrogen fertilizer addition patterns vary according to regional climate, field management practices, and soil conditions. In this study, a meta-analysis was used to quantify the yield effects of nitrogen addition on maize, and meta-regression analysis and a random forest model were used to study the main factors affecting the yield effects of nitrogen addition on maize. The results showed that nitrogen addition significantly increased maize yield by 50.26%–55.72%, and a fluctuating increasing trend was observed with the advancement of the experimental year. The increase in maize yield upon nitrogen addition was the highest in Gansu Province, and showed a decreasing trend with the rise in average annual temperature, but did not change significantly with the average annual precipitation. Among the field management factors, the increase in maize yield was better with the variety Qiangsheng 51, topdressing at the jointing and tasseling stages (JS, TS), nitrogen application rate of 175–225 kg·ha-1, and controlled release of nitrogen fertilizer and urea (CRNFU) or the application of a combination of organic and inorganic nitrogen (OIF). Moreover, the positive effects of nitrogen fertilizer application on maize yield improved with soil pH, organic matter, available potassium, available phosphorus, and total nitrogen content; decreased with soil carbon and nitrogen ratio and available nitrogen (AN) content; and were enhanced in chestnut soil, clay, and at a bulk density of 1.2–1.4 g·cm-3. Random forest model and multifactorial optimization revealed that the effects of nitrogen addition on maize yield in Northwest China were primarily influenced by experimental year, variety, soil type, AN, and soil pH. Twelve liquid crystalline polymer network films were fabricated through photopolymerization of cholesteric liquid-crystalline mixtures containing two aggregation-induced emissive-active luminogens. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION The potential for the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass has been extensively explored to produce a wide range of bioproducts. Many approaches have been sought for the deep conversion of lignin to generate products that are toxin‐free and beneficial for processing into high‐value‐added components.This study reported a fungus isolated from the deep sea with strong synthesis of multiple lignocellulases, conversion of lignin and guaiacol (0.1%) by 71.6% and 86.1% within 9 days at 30 °C respectively, and outstanding environmental adaptability (20–50 °C and pH 3–8). Metabolic pathway profiling showed that this fungus utilized lignin to rapidly activate multiple ring‐opening reactions including the 2,3‐ and 3,4‐cleavage pathways, with the 2,3‐cleavage pathway predominating after 5 days. Conversion of metabolic intermediates confirmed the superb potential of this strain for lignin treatment. Meanwhile, its shikimic acid pathway was metabolically active under lignin.This further expands the potential to produce valuable bioproducts during lignin treatment, especially under ambient conditions, which can significantly enhance high‐value precursor compound production. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
