The rapid evolution of multimedia and computer vision technologies requires adaptive visual model deployment strategies to effectively handle diverse tasks and varying environments. This work introduces AxiomVision, a novel framework that can guarantee accuracy by leveraging edge computing to dynamically select the most efficient visual models for video analytics under diverse scenarios. Utilizing a tiered edge-cloud architecture, AxiomVision enables the deployment of a broad spectrum of visual models, from lightweight to complex DNNs, that can be tailored to specific scenarios while considering camera source impacts. In addition, AxiomVision provides three core innovations: (1) a dynamic visual model selection mechanism utilizing continual online learning, (2) an efficient online method that efficiently takes into account the influence of the camera's perspective, and (3) a topology-driven grouping approach that accelerates the model selection process. With rigorous theoretical guarantees, these advancements provide a scalable and effective solution for visual tasks inherent to multimedia systems, such as object detection, classification, and counting. Large language models (LLMs) propel the prosperity of interactive AI applications showcased by ChatGPT that demand timely response of inference services. However, LLM inference is computation intensive and memory intensive, and improper parameter configuration at LLM platforms may exacerbate the inference time. In this paper, we analyze the impact of LLM output token distribution on the inference queueing delay, where the max-token clipping and the batched inference are considered. By formulating an M/G/1 model, we observe that enforcing a maximum output token limit on a very small fraction of inference requests can significantly reduce the queueing delay, and our model facilitates the selection of the optimal limit. For the batch inference, we model the service process as a bulk queue in which the batch processing time is affected by the batch size and the maximum token size inside this batch jointly. The queueing delays of the batching of all buffered requests (dynamic batching), the batching of constant number of requests (fixed batching), and the batching without intra-batch waiting (elastic batching) are derived. Small cells with edge computing are densely deployed in 5G mobile networks to provide high throughput communication and low-latency computation. The flexibility of edge computation is empowered by the deployment of lightweight container-based microservices. In this paper, we take the first step toward optimizing the microservice management in small-cell networks. The prominent feature is that each microservice consists of multiple image layers and different microservices may share some basic layers, thus bringing deep coupling in their placement and service provision. Our objective is to minimize the expected total latency of microservice requests under the storage, communication and computing constraints of the sparsely interconnected small cell nodes. We formulate a binary quadratic program (BQP) with the multi-dimensional strategy of the image layer placement, the access selection and the task assignment. The BQP problem is then transformed into an ILP problem, and is solved by use of a novel sphere-box alternating direction multipliers method (ADMM) with reasonable complexity $O(q^{4})$, where $q$ is the number of variables in the transformed problem. Trace-driven experiments show that the gap between our proposed algorithm and the optimal is reduced by 35$\%$ compared with benchmark algorithms.

Edge computing plays an essential role in the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks, where vehicles offload their intensive computation tasks to the road-side units for saving energy and reduce the latency. This paper designs the optimal task offloading policy to address the concerns involving processing delay, energy consumption and edge computing cost. Each computation task consisting of some interdependent sub-tasks is characterized as a directed acyclic graph (DAG). In such dynamic networks, a novel hierarchical Offloading scheme is proposed by leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The inter-dependencies among the DAGs of the computation tasks are extracted using a graph neural network with attention mechanism. A parameterized DRL algorithm is developed to deal with the hierarchical action space containing both discrete and continuous actions. Simulation results with a real-world car speed dataset demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the system overhead.

Data silos create barriers in accessing and utilizing data dispersed over networks. Directly sharing data easily suffers from the long downloading time, the single point failure and the untraceable data usage. In this paper, we present Minerva, a peer-to-peer cross-cluster data query system based on InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). Minerva makes use of the distributed Hash table (DHT) lookup to pinpoint the locations that store content chunks. We theoretically model the DHT query delay and introduce the fat Merkle tree structure as well as the DHT caching to reduce it. We design the query plan for read and write operations on top of Apache Drill that enables the collaborative query with decentralized workers. We conduct comprehensive experiments on Minerva, and the results show that Minerva achieves up to $2.08 \times$ query performance acceleration compared to the original IPFS data query, and could complete data analysis queries on the Internet-like environments within an average latency of $0.615$ second. With collaborative query, Minerva could perform up to $1.39 \times$ performance acceleration than centralized query with raw data shipment.

In this paper, we consider a new network security game wherein an attacker and a defender are battling over "multiple" targets. This type of game is appropriate to model many current network security conflicts such as Internet phishing, mobile malware or network intrusions. In such attacks, the attacker and the defender need to decide how to allocate resources on each target so as to maximize his utility within his resource limit. We model such a multi-dimensional network security game as a constrained non-zero sum game. Two security breaching models, the product-form and the proportion-form, are considered. For each breaching model, we prove the existence of a unique Nash equilibrium (NE) based on Rosen's theorem and propose efficient algorithms to find the NE when the games are strictly concave. Furthermore, we show the existence of multiple NEs in the product-form breaching model when the strict concavity does not hold. Our study sheds light on the strategic behaviors of the attacker and the defender, in particular, on how they allocate resources to the targets which have different weights, and how their utilities as well as strategies are influenced by the resource constraints.

This paper studies a fundamental problem regarding the security of blockchain PoW consensus on how the existence of multiple misbehaving miners influences the profitability of selfish mining. Each selfish miner (or attacker interchangeably) maintains a private chain and makes it public opportunistically for acquiring more rewards incommensurate to his Hash power. We first establish a general Markov chain model to characterize the state transition of public and private chains for Basic Selfish Mining (BSM), and derive the stationary profitable threshold of Hash power in closed-form. It reduces from 25% for a single attacker to below 21.48% for two symmetric attackers theoretically, and further reduces to around 10% with eight symmetric attackers experimentally. We next explore the profitable threshold when one of the attackers performs strategic mining based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) that only half of the attributes pertinent to a mining state are observable to him. An online algorithm is presented to compute the nearly optimal policy efficiently despite the large state space and high dimensional belief space. The strategic attacker mines selfishly and more agilely than BSM attacker when his Hash power is relatively high, and mines honestly otherwise, thus leading to a much lower profitable threshold. Last, we formulate a simple model of absolute mining revenue that yields an interesting observation: selfish mining is never profitable at the first difficulty adjustment period, but replying on the reimbursement of stationary selfish mining gains in the future periods. In decentralized learning, a network of nodes cooperate to minimize an overall objective function that is usually the finite-sum of their local objectives, and incorporates a non-smooth regularization term for the better generalization ability. Decentralized stochastic proximal gradient (DSPG) method is commonly used to train this type of learning models, while the convergence rate is retarded by the variance of stochastic gradients. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, namely DPSVRG, to accelerate the decentralized training by leveraging the variance reduction technique. The basic idea is to introduce an estimator in each node, which tracks the local full gradient periodically, to correct the stochastic gradient at each iteration. By transforming our decentralized algorithm into a centralized inexact proximal gradient algorithm with variance reduction, and controlling the bounds of error sequences, we prove that DPSVRG converges at the rate of $O(1/T)$ for general convex objectives plus a non-smooth term with $T$ as the number of iterations, while DSPG converges at the rate $O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{T}})$. Smart contract is the building block of blockchain systems that enables automated peer-to-peer transactions and decentralized services. With the increasing popularity of smart contracts, blockchain systems, in particular Ethereum, have been the "paradise" of versatile fraud activities in which Ponzi, Honeypot and Phishing are the prominent ones. Formal verification and symbolic analysis have been employed to combat these destructive scams by analyzing the codes and function calls, yet the vulnerability of each \emph{individual} scam should be predefined discreetly. In this work, we present SCSGuard, a novel deep learning scam detection framework that harnesses the automatically extractable bytecodes of smart contracts as their new features. We design a GRU network with attention mechanism to learn from the \emph{N-gram bytecode} patterns, and determines whether a smart contract is fraudulent or not. Our framework is advantageous over the baseline algorithms in three aspects. Firstly, SCSGuard provides a unified solution to different scam genres, thus relieving the need of code analysis skills. Secondly, the inference of SCSGuard is faster than the code analysis by several order of magnitudes. Thirdly, experimental results manifest that SCSGuard achieves high accuracy (0.92$\sim$0.94), precision (0.94$\sim$0.96\%) and recall (0.97$\sim$0.98) for both Ponzi and Honeypot scams under similar settings, and is potentially useful to detect new Phishing smart contracts., Comment: 6 figures

Scaling blockchain efficiency is crucial to its widespread usage in which the payment channel is one of the most prominent approaches. With payment channels and the network they construct, two users can move some transactions off-chain in a predetermined duration to avoid expensive and time-consuming on-chain settlements. Existing work is devoted to designing high-throughput payment channel networks (PCNs) or efficient PCN routing policies to reduce the fee. In this paper, we investigate the PCN routing from a different perspective by answering whether the routing fee of transactions can be saved by being a bit more patient. The key idea is to reorder the processing sequence of atomic transactions, other than to handle each of them separately and immediately. We present two mechanisms, one is periodic transaction processing assisted by a PCN broker and the other is purely strategic waiting. In the former, all the incoming transactions in a short time interval are processed collectively. We formulate an optimization model to minimize their total routing fee and derive the optimal permutation of processing transactions as well as the routing policy for each of them. A Shapley value based scheme is presented to redistribute the benefit of reordering among the transactions efficiently and fairly. In the latter, we model the waiting time of a strategic transaction on a single payment channel as the first passage time problem in queueing theory when the transaction value is higher than the edge capacity upon its arrival. By capturing the capacity dynamics, we are able to calculate the recursive expression of waiting for time distribution that is useful to gauge a user's cost of patience. Graphlets are induced subgraph patterns that are crucial to the understanding of the structure and function of a large network. A lot of efforts have been devoted to calculating graphlet statistics where random walk based approaches are commonly used to access restricted graphs through the available application programming interfaces (APIs). However, most of them merely consider individual networks while overlooking the strong coupling between different networks. In this paper, we estimate the graphlet concentration in multi-layer networks with real-world applications. An inter-layer edge connects two nodes in different layers if they belong to the same person. The access to a multi-layer network is restrictive in the sense that the upper layer allows random walk sampling, whereas the nodes of lower layers can be accessed only though the inter-layer edges and only support random node or edge sampling. To cope with this new challenge, we define a suit of two-layer graphlets and propose a novel random walk sampling algorithm to estimate the proportion of all the 3-node graphlets. An analytical bound on the sampling steps is proved to guarantee the convergence of our unbiased estimator. We further generalize our algorithm to explore the tradeoff between the estimated accuracies of different graphlets when the sample size is split on different layers. Experimental evaluation on real-world and synthetic multi-layer networks demonstrate the accuracy and high efficiency of our unbiased estimators., Comment: 14 pages

Ethereum is one of the most popular blockchain systems that supports more than half a million transactions every day and fosters miscellaneous decentralized applications with its Turing-complete smart contract machine. Whereas it remains mysterious what the transaction pattern of Ethereum is and how it evolves over time. In this paper, we study the evolutionary behavior of Ethereum transactions from a temporal graph point of view. We first develop a data analytics platform to collect external transactions associated with users as well as internal transactions initiated by smart contracts. Three types of temporal graphs, user-to-user, contract-to-contract and user-contract graphs, are constructed according to trading relationship and are segmented with an appropriate time window. We observe a strong correlation between the size of user-to-user transaction graph and the average Ether price in a time window, while no evidence of such linkage is shown at the average degree, average edge weights and average triplet closure duration. The macroscopic and microscopic burstiness of Ethereum transactions is validated. We analyze the Gini indexes of the transaction graphs and the user wealth in which Ethereum is found to be very unfair since the very beginning, in a sense, "the rich is already very rich"., Comment: 9 pages

Channel state information (CSI) based fingerprinting for WIFI indoor localization has attracted lots of attention very recently.The frequency diverse and temporally stable CSI better represents the location dependent channel characteristics than the coarsereceived signal strength (RSS). However, the acquisition of CSI requires the cooperation of access points (APs) and involves only dataframes, which imposes restrictions on real-world deployment. In this paper, we present CRISLoc, the first CSI fingerprinting basedlocalization prototype system using ubiquitous smartphones. CRISLoc operates in a completely passive mode, overhearing thepackets on-the-fly for his own CSI acquisition. The smartphone CSI is sanitized via calibrating the distortion enforced by WiFi amplifiercircuits. CRISLoc tackles the challenge of altered APs with a joint clustering and outlier detection method to find them. A novel transferlearning approach is proposed to reconstruct the high-dimensional CSI fingerprint database on the basis of the outdated fingerprintsand a few fresh measurements, and an enhanced KNN approach is proposed to pinpoint the location of a smartphone. Our studyreveals important properties about the stability and sensitivity of smartphone CSI that has not been reported previously. Experimentalresults show that CRISLoc can achieve a mean error of around 0.29m in a6m times 8mresearch laboratory. The mean error increases by 5.4 cm and 8.6 cm upon the movement of one and two APs, which validates the robustness of CRISLoc against environment changes.

Packet routing is one of the fundamental problems in computer networks in which a router determines the next-hop of each packet in the queue to get it as quickly as possible to its destination. Reinforcement learning (RL) has been introduced to design autonomous packet routing policies with local information of stochastic packet arrival and service. However, the curse of dimensionality of RL prohibits the more comprehensive representation of dynamic network states, thus limiting its potential benefit. In this paper, we propose a novel packet routing framework based on \emph{multi-agent} deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in which each router possess an \emph{independent} LSTM recurrent neural network for training and decision making in a \emph{fully distributed} environment. The LSTM recurrent neural network extracts routing features from rich information regarding backlogged packets and past actions, and effectively approximates the value function of Q-learning. We further allow each route to communicate periodically with direct neighbors so that a broader view of network state can be incorporated. Experimental results manifest that our multi-agent DRL policy can strike the delicate balance between congestion-aware and shortest routes, and significantly reduce the packet delivery time in general network topologies compared with its counterparts., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The device-to-device (D2D) communication theoretically provides both the cellular traffic offloading and convenient content delivery directly among proximity users. However, in practice, no matter in underlay or overlay mode, the employment of D2D may impair the performance of the cellular links. Therefore, it is important to design a spectrum sharing scheme, under which the performance of both links can be improved simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the cell-edge user (CEU) scenario, where both sides have the demand to improve the quality of experience or service. Therefore, CEUs and D2D users both have intentions to form pairs, namely, CEU-D2D pairs, to cooperate mutually. Different from the conventional equilibrium point evaluation, the stable matching between D2D users and CEUs are formulated under matching theory framework instead. We consider a device-to-device (D2D) underlaid cellular network, where each cellular channel can be shared by several D2D pairs and only one channel can be allocated to each D2D pair. We try to maximize the sum rate of D2D pairs while limiting the interference to cellular links. Due to the lack of global information in large scale networks, resource allocation is hard to be implemented in a centralized way. Therefore, we design a novel distributed resource allocation scheme which is based on local information and requires little coordination and communication between D2D pairs. Specifically, we decompose the original problem into two cascaded subproblems, namely channel allocation and power control. The cascaded structure of our scheme enables us to cope with them respectively. Then a two-stage algorithm is proposed. In the first stage, we model the channel allocation problem as a many-to-one matching with externalities and try to find a strongly swap-stable matching. Minimizing job scheduling time is a fundamental issue in data center networks that has been extensively studied in recent years. The incoming jobs require different CPU and memory units, and span different number of time slots. The traditional solution is to design efficient heuristic algorithms with performance guarantee under certain assumptions. In this paper, we improve a recently proposed job scheduling algorithm using deep reinforcement learning and extend it to multiple server clusters. Our study reveals that deep reinforcement learning method has the potential to outperform traditional resource allocation algorithms in a variety of complicated environments.

This paper investigates the incentive mechanism design from a novel and practically important perspective in which mobile users as contributors do not join simultaneously and a requester desires large efforts from early contributors. A two-stage Tullock contest framework is constructed:at the second stage the potential contributors compete for splittable reward by exerting efforts, and at the first stage the requester can orchestrate the incentive mechanism to maximize his crowdsensing efficiency given the rewarding budget. A general reward discrimination mechanism is developed for timeliness sensitive crowdsensing where an earlier contributor usually has a larger maximum achievable reward and thus allocates more efforts. Owning to the lack of joining time information, two practical implementations, namely earliest-n and termination time, are announced to the contributors. For each of them, we formulate a Stackelberg Bayesian game in which the joining time of a contributor is his type and not available to his opponents. The uniqueness of Bayesian Nash equilibrium (BNE) is proved in each strategy. To maximize the requester's efficiency, we compute the optimal number of rewarded contributors in the earliest-n scheme and the optimal deadline in the termination time scheme. Our contest framework is applicable not only to the closed crowdsensing with fixed number of contributors, but also to the open crowdsensing that the arrival of contributors is governed by a stochastic process. Extensive simulations manifest that with appropriate reward discriminations, the requester is able to achieve a much higher efficiency with the optimal selection of the number of rewarded contributiors and the termination time., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures

The explosion of mobile video traffic imposes tremendous challenges on present cellular networks. To alleviate the pressure on backhaul links and to enhance the quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming service, small cell base stations (SBS) with caching ability are introduced to assist the content delivery. In this paper, we present the first study on the optimal caching strategy of scalable video coding (SVC) streaming in small cell networks with the consideration of channel diversity and video scalability. We formulate an integer programming problem to maximize the average SVC QoE under the constraint of cache size at each SBS. By establishing connections between QoE and caching state of each video, we simplify the proactive caching of SVC as a multiple-choice knapsack problem (MCKP), and propose a low-complexity algorithm using dynamic programming. Our proactive caching strategy reveals the structural properties of cache allocation to each video based on their popularity profiles. Simulation results manifest that the SBSs with caching ability can greatly improve the average QoE of SVC streaming service, and that our proposed caching strategy acquires significant performance gain compared with other conventional caching policies., Comment: 7 pages

Unraveling quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming is very challenging in bandwidth shared wireless networks. It is unclear how QoE metrics such as starvation probability and buffering time interact with dynamics of streaming traffic load. In this paper, we collect view records from one of the largest streaming providers in China over two weeks and perform an in-depth measurement study on flow arrival and viewing time that shed light on the real traffic pattern. Our most important observation is that the viewing time of streaming users fits a hyper-exponential distribution quite well. This implies that all the views can be categorized into two classes, short and long views with separated time scales. We then map the measured traffic pattern to bandwidth shared cellular networks and propose an analytical framework to compute the closed-form starvation probability on the basis of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Our framework can be naturally extended to investigate practical issues including the progressive downloading and the finite video duration. Extensive trace-driven simulations validate the accuracy of our models. Our study reveals that the starvation metrics of the short and long views possess different sensitivities to the scheduling priority at base station. Hence, a better QoE tradeoff between the short and long views has a potential to be leveraged by offering them different scheduling weights. The flow differentiation involves tremendous technical and non-technical challenges because video content is owned by content providers but not the network operators and the viewing time of each session is unknown beforehand. The price-anticipating Kelly mechanism (PAKM) is one of the most extensively used strategies to allocate divisible resources for strategic users in communication networks and computing systems. The users are deemed as selfish and also benign, each of which maximizes his individual utility of the allocated resources minus his payment to the network operator. However, in many applications a user can use his payment to reduce the utilities of his opponents, thus playing a misbehaving role. It remains mysterious to what extent the misbehaving user can damage or influence the performance of benign users and the network operator. In this work, we formulate a non-cooperative game consisting of a finite amount of benign users and one misbehaving user. The maliciousness of this misbehaving user is captured by his willingness to pay to trade for unit degradation in the utilities of benign users. The network operator allocates resources to all the users via the price-anticipating Kelly mechanism. We present six important performance metrics with regard to the total utility and the total net utility of benign users, and the revenue of network operator under three different scenarios: with and without the misbehaving user, and the maximum. We quantify the robustness of PAKM against the misbehaving actions by deriving the upper and lower bounds of these metrics. With new approaches, all the theoretical bounds are applicable to an arbitrary population of benign users. Our study reveals two important insights: i) the performance bounds are very sensitive to the misbehaving user's willingness to pay at certain ranges; ii) the network operator acquires more revenues in the presence of the misbehaving user which might disincentivize his countermeasures against the misbehaving actions., Comment: 21

We take an analytical approach to study the Quality of user Experience (QoE) for video streaming applications. Our propose is to characterize buffer starvations for streaming video with Long-Range-Dependent (LRD) input traffic. Specifically we develop a new analytical framework to investigate Quality of user Experience (QoE) for streaming by considering a Markov Modulated Fluid Model (MMFM) that accurately approximates the Long Range Dependence (LRD) nature of network traffic. We drive the close-form expressions for calculating the distribution of starvation as well as start-up delay using partial differential equations (PDEs) and solve them using the Laplace Transform. We illustrate the results with the cases of the two-state Markov Modulated Fluid Model that is commonly used in multimedia applications. We compare our analytical model with simulation results using ns-3 under various operating parameters. We further adopt the model to analyze the effect of bitrate switching on the starvation probability and start-up delay. Finally, we apply our analysis results to optimize the objective quality of experience (QoE) of media streaming realizing the tradeoff among different metrics incorporating user preferences on buffering ratio, startup delay and perceived quality., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

The Quality of Experience (QoE) of streaming service is often degraded by frequent playback interruptions. To mitigate the interruptions, the media player prefetches streaming contents before starting playback, at a cost of delay. We study the QoE of streaming from the perspective of flow dynamics. First, a framework is developed for QoE when streaming users join the network randomly and leave after downloading completion. We compute the distribution of prefetching delay using partial differential equations (PDEs), and the probability generating function of playout buffer starvations using ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for CBR streaming. Second, we extend our framework to characterize the throughput variation caused by opportunistic scheduling at the base station, and the playback variation of VBR streaming. Our study reveals that the flow dynamics is the fundamental reason of playback starvation. The QoE of streaming service is dominated by the first moments such as the average throughput of opportunistic scheduling and the mean playback rate. Our purpose in this paper is to characterize buffer starvations for streaming services. The buffer is modeled as an M/M/1 queue, plus the consideration of bursty arrivals. When the buffer is empty, the service restarts after a certain amount of packets are \emph{prefetched}. With this goal, we propose two approaches to obtain the \emph{exact distribution} of the number of buffer starvations, one of which is based on \emph{Ballot theorem}, and the other uses recursive equations. The Ballot theorem approach gives an explicit result. We extend this approach to the scenario with a constant playback rate using T\`{a}kacs Ballot theorem. The recursive approach, though not offering an explicit result, can obtain the distribution of starvations with non-independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) arrival process in which an ON/OFF bursty arrival process is considered in this work. We further compute the starvation probability as a function of the amount of prefetched packets for a large number of files via a fluid analysis. 2010 has witnessed many public consultations around the world concerning Net neutrality. A second legislative phase that may follow, could involve various structural changes in the Internet. The status that the Internet access has in Europe as a universal service evolves as the level of quality of service (QoS) to be offered improves. If guarantees on QoS are to be imposed, as requested by several economic actors, it would require introducing new indicators of quality of services, as well as regulation legislation and monitoring of the offered levels of QoS. This tendency in Europe may change the nature of the Internet from a best effort network to, perhaps, a more expensive one, that offers guaranteed performance. This paper studies the economic utilities and the quality of service (QoS) in a two-sided non-neutral market where Internet service providers (ISPs) charge content providers (CPs) for the content delivery. We propose new models on a two-sided market which involves a CP, an ISP, end users and advertisers. The CP may have either the subscription revenue model (charging end users) or the advertisement revenue model (charging advertisers). We formulate the interactions between the ISP and the CP as a noncooperative game problem for the former and an optimization problem for the latter. Our analysis shows that the revenue model of the CP plays a significant role in a non-neutral Internet. With the subscription model, both the ISP and the CP receive better (or worse) utilities as well as QoS in the presence of side payment at the same time. The demand for Internet services that require frequent updates through small messages, such as microblogging, has tremendously grown in the past few years. Although the use of such applications by domestic users is usually free, their access from mobile devices is subject to fees and consumes energy from limited batteries. If a user activates his mobile device and is in range of a service provider, a content update is received at the expense of monetary and energy costs. Thus, users face a tradeoff between such costs and their messages aging. The goal of this paper is to show how to cope with such a tradeoff, by devising \emph{aging control policies}. An aging control policy consists of deciding, based on the current utility of the last message received, whether to activate the mobile device, and if so, which technology to use (WiFi or 3G). We present a model that yields the optimal aging control policy. Our model is based on a Markov Decision Process in which states correspond to message ages. Using our model, we show the existence of an optimal strategy in the class of threshold strategies, wherein users activate their mobile devices if the age of their messages surpasses a given threshold and remain inactive otherwise. We then consider strategic content providers (publishers) that offer \emph{bonus packages} to users, so as to incent them to download updates of advertisement campaigns. We provide simple algorithms for publishers to determine optimal bonus levels, leveraging the fact that users adopt their optimal aging control strategies. The paper has two objectives. The first is to study rigorously the transient behavior of some P2P networks whenever information is replicated and disseminated according to epidemic-like dynamics. The second is to use the insight gained from the previous analysis in order to predict how efficient are measures taken against peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. We first introduce a stochastic model which extends a classical epidemic model and characterize the P2P swarm behavior in presence of free riding peers. We then study a second model in which a peer initiates a contact with another peer chosen randomly. In both cases the network is shown to exhibit a phase transition: a small change in the parameters causes a large change in the behavior of the network. We show, in particular, how the phase transition affects measures that content provider networks may take against P2P networks that distribute non-authorized music or books, and what is the efficiency of counter-measures., Comment: IEEE Infocom (2011)

Dynamic spectrum sharing is a promising technology to improve spectrum utilization in the future wireless networks. The flexible spectrum management provides new opportunities for licensed primary user and unlicensed secondary users to reallocate the spectrum resource efficiently. In this paper, we present an oligopoly pricing framework for dynamic spectrum allocation in which the primary users sell excessive spectrum to the secondary users for monetary return. We present two approaches, the strict constraints (type-I) and the QoS penalty (type-II), to model the realistic situation that the primary users have limited capacities. In the oligopoly model with strict constraints, we propose a low-complexity searching method to obtain the Nash Equilibrium and prove its uniqueness. When reduced to a duopoly game, we analytically show the interesting gaps in the leader-follower pricing strategy. In the QoS penalty based oligopoly model, a novel variable transformation method is developed to derive the unique Nash Equilibrium. When the market information is limited, we provide three myopically optimal algorithms "StrictBEST", "StrictBR" and "QoSBEST" that enable price adjustment for duopoly primary users based on the Best Response Function (BRF) and the bounded rationality (BR) principles. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our analysis and demonstrate the fast convergence of "StrictBEST" as well as "QoSBEST" to the Nash Equilibrium.
