Gastric cancer, a malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality in China, has characteristics such as high heterogeneity and poor prognosis. With the advent of the 21st century, significant progress has been made in gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment due to the rapid development of genomics, laparoscopic minimally invasive techniques, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. This article summarized the important research progress in the field of gastric cancer prevention and treatment since the 21st century, and looked forward to the future. We hope to make greater progress and breakthroughs in early screening, diagnosis and precise treatment of gastric cancer, further improve the overall survival rate of patients, and transform gastric cancer into a controllable “chronic disease”.

Gastric cancer remains a significant global health challenge, with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) recognized as a major etiological agent, affecting an estimated 50% of the world's population. There has been a rapidly expanding knowledge of the molecular and pathogenetic mechanisms of H. pylori over the decades. This review summarizes the latest research advances to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the H. pylori infection in gastric carcinogenesis. Our investigation of the molecular mechanisms reveals a complex network involving STAT3, NF-κB, Hippo, and Wnt/β-catenin pathways, which are dysregulated in gastric cancer caused by H. pylori. Furthermore, we highlight the role of H. pylori in inducing oxidative stress, DNA damage, chronic inflammation, and cell apoptosis—key cellular events that pave the way for carcinogenesis. Emerging evidence also suggests the effect of H. pylori on the tumor microenvironment and its possible implications for cancer immunotherapy. This review synthesizes the current knowledge and identifies gaps that warrant further investigation. Despite the progress in our previous knowledge of the development in H. pylori-induced gastric cancer, a comprehensive investigation of H. pylori's role in gastric cancer is crucial for the advancement of prevention and treatment strategies. A toroidal bubble or a cylindrical gas jet are known to be subjected to the Rayleigh–Plateau instability. Air bubble rings produced by beluga whales and dolphins however are observed that remain stable for long times. In the present work, we analyse the generation of such toroidal bubbles via numerical simulations, in particular how the process depends on surface tension. Their stability properties are then briefly analysed. For the estimated Reynolds and Weber numbers relative to the bubbles produced by these animals, the presence of a vortex inside and around the bubble is found to strongly stabilize the Rayleigh–Plateau instability.

Outcome for children with high-risk neuroblastoma (NB) remains suboptimal. Recurrence and metastasis caused by chemo-resistance is an underlying mechanism contributing to the poor prognosis. Aberrant expression of Rad51 is implicated in both radio- and chemo-sensitivity in many human malignancies. However, its clinical significance and relationship with chemo-sensitivity in NB remain undefined. In this study, Rad51 expression was first evaluated in 70 surgically resected NB specimens by immunochemistry using tissue microarray and the correlation with clinic-pathologic features including survival was assessed. We then conducted microarray-based search with the Tumor Neuroblastoma public datasets to validate the immunochemistry results. Furthermore, the role of Rad51 in drug sensitivity was studied by using short hairpin RNA in the human NB SK-N-BE(2) and SH-SY5Y cells with treatment of doxorubicin. Our findings demonstrated for the first time that Rad51 is a prognostic marker in NB and down-regulation of Rad51 can lead to chemo-sensitizing effect in human NB cells., Competing Interests: None., (AJTR Copyright © 2019.)
