Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen capable of infecting both humans and animals and causing various severe diseases. Here, we aimed to determine the biological features and pathogenicity of S. aureus strain Sa9, of the incomplete hemolysis phenotype, isolated from bovine milk. Sa9 was classified as ST97 by multilocus sequence typing, and it showed increased β‐hemolysin expression and lower Hla and Hld expression levels compared with that in the S. aureus USA300 strain LAC. RT‐PCR and ELISA results showed that the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines were higher in Sa9‐induced mouse primary peritoneal macrophages compared with those induced by the LAC strain. However, the Sa9 strain also mediated anti‐inflammatory effects by upregulating IL‐10 and IFN‐β in macrophages, which were not apparently induced by S. aureus culture supernatants. Phagocytosis and whole‐blood survival assays were also performed to assess the in vitro survival of bacteria, and the virulence was evaluated in mice. Although the Sa9 strain showed lower ability of intracellular survival in macrophages than LAC, similar multiplication in human whole blood and pathogenicity toward mice were observed. Taken together, we report that the distinctive immune response induced by the S. aureus strain with an incomplete hemolysis phenotype occurs in cattle, and its potential pathogenicity and risk of transmission to humans require attention. Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the value of transabdominal colour Doppler ultrasonography in the uterine artery blood flow characteristics, uterine characteristics and diagnostic value of endometriosis. There were 100 cases of endometriosis in our hospital who were selected as the case group, and 100 healthy women in the same period as the control group. The results showed that the uterine volume and endometrial thickness of the case group were greater than those of the control group (P<0.05). After cervix was swayed, EDV of the case group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05), while RI was greater than that of the control group (P<0.05). From the ROC curve, it can be seen that the AUC value exceeds 0. 65. EDV, RI, uterine volume and endometrial thickness are all high in sensitivity and specificity. The missed diagnosis rate and misdiagnosis rate were also within a controllable range. In a word, the uterine artery blood flow parameters and uterine morphological characteristics have certain clinical reference value for the diagnosis of endometriosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Differential distribution of age and HBV serological markers in liver cirrhosis and non-cirrhotic patients with primary liver cancer

Abstract

ObjectiveTo compare the age distributions and presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) serological markers between primary hepatic cancer (PHC) patients with and without liver cirrhosis. MethodsA total of 547 PHC cases were analyzed retrospectively. After dividing into two groups according to liver cirrhosis status, the between-group differences in age and HBV serological markers, such as hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status, were statistically compared using the Chi-squared test. ResultsThe number of cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic PHC patients was 265 and 282, respectively. HBV infection was present in 221 cirrhotic PHC patients and 256 non-cirrhotic PHC patients (834% vs. 90.8%). There was a substantial bias in the proportion of males to females in the cirrhotic PHC patients (7.83∶1). The number of PHC patients ＜60 years old was similar between the cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic groups, but the non-cirrhotic group had significantly more patients ＞60 years old (P＜0.005). In cirrhotic PHC patients, the HBV infection rate was highest in the ＜40 years old age group (96.7%) and the HBeAg serological conversion rate was highest in the 40-60 years old age group (89.5%). In non-cirrhotic PHC patients, the 40-60 years old age group showed the highest HBV infection rate (90.3%) but the lowest HBeAg serological conversion rate (80.0%). ConclusionPHC with liver cirrhosis mainly occurred in males, with the HBV infection rate being higher in individuals ＜60 years old. Non-cirrhotic PHC patients were more often ＞60 years old. Many of the HBV-infected PHC patients with cirrhosis had high HBeAg serological conversion rate.
