Magnetic fields and turbulence are fundamental to the evolution of galaxies, yet their precise measurement and analysis present significant challenges. The recently developed Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT), which capitalizes on the anisotropy inherent in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, represents a new method for mapping magnetic fields in galaxies using spectroscopic observations. Most validations of VGT thus far, however, have relied upon idealized MHD turbulence simulations, which lack the more complex dynamics found in galaxies and galaxy mergers. In this study, we scrutinize VGT using an AREPO-based cosmological galaxy merger simulation, testing its effectiveness across pre-merger, merging, and post-merger stages. We examine the underlying assumptions of VGT and probe the statistics of gas density, velocity, and magnetic fields over time. We find that velocity fluctuations are indeed anisotropic at each stage, being larger in the direction perpendicular to the local magnetic field, as required by VGT. We find, additionally, that galaxy mergers substantially intensify velocity and density fluctuations and amplify magnetic fields at all scales. The observed scaling behavior of the velocity fluctuations corresponds to $r^{1/2}$ up to 0.4~kpc, shifting to a steeper trend between 0.6 and 3~kpc, and to a shallower trend thereafter. The scaling of the magnetic field and density fluctuations at scales $\lesssim$ 1.0 kpc also predominantly aligns with $r^{1/2}$. Finally, we compare results from VGT to those derived from polarization-based magnetic field measurements, finding consistent and statistically significant global agreement in all cases. We study the wide-binary eccentricity ($e$) distribution in young star clusters and the role of turbulence in setting the form of the $e$ distribution using magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of star cluster formation. The simulations incorporate gravity, turbulence, magnetic fields, protostellar heating, and jets/outflows. We find that (1) simulations that employ purely compressive turbulence driving produce binaries with a superthermal $e$ distribution ($\alpha>1$ in $p(e) \propto e^\alpha$), while simulations with purely solenoidal driving or natural mixture of driving modes produce subthermal/thermal distributions ($\alpha \leq$ 1), (2) the $e$ distribution over the full range of binary separations in our simulations is set at the early stages of the star cluster formation process, (3) while binaries (separation of $r_{\mathrm{pair}} \leq 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$) have subthermal to thermal $e$ distributions ($\alpha \sim 0.8$), wide binaries ($r_{\mathrm{pair}} > 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$) have a superthermal distribution ($\alpha \sim 1.8$), and (4) low-mass binary systems (system masses of $M_{\mathrm{sys}} \leq 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot}$) have a highly superthermal distribution ($\alpha \sim 2.4$), whereas high-mass systems ($M_{\mathrm{sys}} > 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot}$) exhibit a subthermal/thermal distribution ($\alpha \sim 0.8$). The binary eccentricity distribution is often modelled as a thermal distribution. However, our results suggest that the $e$ distribution depends on the range of separation of the sampled binaries, which agrees with the findings from recent Gaia observations. The diffusion of cosmic rays (CRs) in turbulent magnetic fields is fundamental to understand various astrophysical processes. We explore the CR diffusion in the magnetic fluctuations amplified by the nonlinear turbulent dynamo, in the absence of a strong mean magnetic field. Using test particle simulations, we identify three distinct CR diffusion regimes: mirroring, wandering, and magnetic moment scattering (MMS). With highly inhomogeneous distribution of the dynamo-amplified magnetic fields, we find that the diffusion of CRs is also spatially inhomogeneous. Our results reveal that lower-energy CRs preferentially undergo the mirror and wandering diffusion in the strong-field regions, and the MMS diffusion in the weak-field regions. The former two diffusion mechanisms play a more important role toward lower CR energies, resulting in a relatively weak energy dependence of the overall CR mean free path. In contrast, higher-energy CRs predominantly undergo the MMS diffusion, for which the incomplete particle gyration, i.e., the limit case of mirroring, in strong fields has a more significant effect than the scattering by small-scale field tangling/reversal. Compared with lower-energy CRs, they are more poorly confined in space, and their mean free paths have a stronger energy dependence. Cosmic rays (CRs) interact with turbulent magnetic fields in the intestellar medium, generating nonthermal emission. After many decades of studies, the theoretical understanding of their diffusion in the ISM continues to pose a challenge. This study numerically explores a recent prediction termed "mirror diffusion" and its synergy with traditional diffusion mechanism based on gyroresonant scattering. Our study combines 3D MHD simulations of star-forming regions with test particle simulations to analyze CR diffusion. We demonstrate the significance of mirror diffusion in CR diffusion parallel to the magnetic field, when the mirroring condition is satisfied. Our results support the theoretical expectation that the resulting particle propagation arising from mirror diffusion in combination with much faster diffusion induced by gyroresonant scattering resembles a Levy-flight-like propagation. Our study highlights the necessity to reevaluate the diffusion coefficients traditionally adopeted in the ISM based on gyroresonant scattering alone. For instance, our simulations imply a diffusion coefficient $\sim10^{27}cm^2/s$ for particles with a few hundred TeV within regions spanning a few parsecs around the source. This estimate is in agreement with gamma-ray observations, which shows the relevance of our results for understanding of diffuse gamma-ray emission in star-forming regions.

Recent studies show that the eccentricity distribution of wide binaries (semimajor axis $\gtrsim10^3\;\mathrm{AU}$) observed by \emph{Gaia} tends to favor large eccentricities more strongly than the canonical thermal distribution ($P(e) \propto e$) -- such distributions are termed "superthermal". Motivated by this observation, we revisit the formation channel of black hole (BH) binary mergers in triple stellar systems and study the impact of superthermal eccentricity distributions in the outer binaries. We explore the persistence of the highly eccentric outer orbits after each component in a stellar triple has undergone mass loss due to supernova explosions. We find that the outer eccentricity distribution can remain significantly superthermal for modestly hierarchical BH triples satisfying $a_{\rm in}/a_{\rm out}\gtrsim 0.005$ (where $a_{\rm in}$ and $a_{\rm out}$ are the semimajor axes of the inner and outer orbits), and are otherwise shaped by mass-loss induced kicks and dynamical instability. We then study the impact of these different outer eccentricity distributions of the remaining BH triples on mergers via the tertiary-induced channel. Of interest, we find that mergers can sometimes be produced even when the initial stellar orbits are near alignment (not subject to the von-Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai effect; ZLK effect) as long as the system is sufficiently hierarchical. On the other hand, although the impact of the octupole-order ZLK effect is much greater when the outer binary is more eccentric, we find that the merger fraction only changes modestly for extreme outer eccentricity distributions, as the largest eccentricities tend to lead to dynamical instability., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

We numerically investigate the driving of MHD turbulence by gravitational contraction using simulations of an initially spherical, magnetically supercritical cloud core with initially transonic and trans-Alfv\'enic turbulence. We perform a Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field, and investigate the evolution of its solenoidal and compressible parts, as well as of the velocity component along the gravitational acceleration vector, a proxy for the infall component of the velocity field. We find that: 1) In spite of being supercritical, the core first contracts to a sheet perpendicular to the mean field, and the sheet itself collapses. 2) The solenoidal component of the turbulence remains at roughly its initial level throughout the simulation, while the compressible component increases continuously. This implies that turbulence does {\it not} dissipate towards the center of the core. 3) The distribution of simulation cells in the $B$-$\rho$ plane occupies a wide triangular region at low densities, bounded below by the expected trend for fast MHD waves ($B \propto \rho$, applicable for high local Alfv\'enic Mach number $\Ma$) and above by the trend expected for slow waves ($B \sim$ constant, applicable for low local $\Ma$). At high densities, the distribution follows a single trend $B \propto \rho^{\gamef}$, with $1/2 < \gamef < 2/3$, as expected for gravitational compression. 4) The measured mass-to-magnetic flux ratio $\lambda$ increases with radius $r$, due to the different scalings of the mass and magnetic flux with $r$. At a fixed radius, $\lambda$ increases with time due to the accretion of material along field lines. 5) The solenoidal energy fraction is much smaller than the total turbulent component, indicating that the collapse drives the turbulence mainly compressibly, even in directions orthogonal to that of the collapse., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after first set of reviewer's recommendations. The inner hundred parsecs of the Milky Way hosts the nearest supermassive black hole, largest reservoir of dense gas, greatest stellar density, hundreds of massive main and post main sequence stars, and the highest volume density of supernovae in the Galaxy. As the nearest environment in which it is possible to simultaneously observe many of the extreme processes shaping the Universe, it is one of the most well-studied regions in astrophysics. Due to its proximity, we can study the center of our Galaxy on scales down to a few hundred AU, a hundred times better than in similar Local Group galaxies and thousands of times better than in the nearest active galaxies. The Galactic Center (GC) is therefore of outstanding astrophysical interest. However, in spite of intense observational work over the past decades, there are still fundamental things unknown about the GC. JWST has the unique capability to provide us with the necessary, game-changing data. In this White Paper, we advocate for a JWST NIRCam survey that aims at solving central questions, that we have identified as a community: i) the 3D structure and kinematics of gas and stars; ii) ancient star formation and its relation with the overall history of the Milky Way, as well as recent star formation and its implications for the overall energetics of our galaxy's nucleus; and iii) the (non-)universality of star formation and the stellar initial mass function. We advocate for a large-area, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength NIRCam survey of the inner 100\,pc of the Galaxy in the form of a Treasury GO JWST Large Program that is open to the community. We describe how this survey will derive the physical and kinematic properties of ~10,000,000 stars, how this will solve the key unknowns and provide a valuable resource for the community with long-lasting legacy value., Comment: This White Paper will be updated when required (e.g. new authors joining, editing of content). We investigate the role of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence measured by Voyager in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) in modeling the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) ribbon. We demonstrate that the mirroring by compressible modes of MHD turbulence dominates over that by the mean magnetic field. Based on the new mirror diffusion mechanism identified by Lazarian and Xu for particles with large pitch angles in MHD turbulence, we find that the mirror diffusion can both confine pickup ions and preserve their initial pitch angles, and thus accounts for the enhanced intensity of energetic neutral atoms that return to the heliosphere. The ribbon width is determined by both the range of pitch angles for effective turbulent mirroring and the field line wandering induced by Alfv\'{e}nic modes. It in turn provides a constraint on the amplitude of magnetic fluctuations of fast modes. The field line wandering also affects the coherence of the ribbon structure across the sky. By extrapolating the magnetic energy spectrum measured by Voyager, we find that the injection scale of the turbulence in the VLISM is less than $\sim 500$ au for the ribbon structure to be coherent., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The theoretical prediction that magnetic reconnection spontaneously drives turbulence has been supported by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic simulations. While reconnection with externally driven turbulence is accepted as an effective mechanism for particle acceleration, the acceleration during the reconnection with self-driven turbulence is studied for the first time in this work. By using high-resolution 3D MHD simulations of reconnection with self-generated turbulence, we inject test particles into the reconnection layer to study their acceleration process. We find that the energy gain of the particles takes place when they bounce back and forth between converging turbulent magnetic fields. The particles can be efficiently accelerated in self-driven turbulent reconnection with the energy increase by about 3 orders of magnitude in the range of the box size. The acceleration proceeds when the particle gyroradii become larger than the thickness of the reconnection layer. We find that the acceleration in the direction perpendicular to the local magnetic field dominates over that in the parallel direction. The energy spectrum of accelerated particles is time-dependent with a slope that evolves toward -2.5. In a weakly compressible high-$\beta$ medium, pitch-angle scattering and the associated scattering acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs) by anisotropic Alfv\'{e}n and slow modes of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is inefficient. To tap the energy from magnetic compressions for efficient particle acceleration, a diffusion mechanism that can effectively confine particles in space without causing their trapping or pitch-angle isotropization is needed. We find that the mirror diffusion in MHD turbulence recently identified in Lazarian and Xu (2021) satisfies all the above conditions and serves as a promising diffusion mechanism for efficient acceleration of CRs via their stochastic non-resonant interactions with magnetic compressions/expansions. The resulting mirror acceleration is dominated by the slow-mode eddies with their lifetime comparable to the mirror diffusion time of CRs. Consequently, we find that the acceleration time of mirror acceleration is independent of the spatial diffusion coefficient of CRs. The mirror acceleration brings new life for the particle acceleration in a weakly compressible/incompressible medium and has important implications for studying CR re-acceleration in the high-$\beta$ intracluster medium., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

The coupling state between ions and neutrals in the interstellar medium plays a key role in the dynamics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, but is challenging to study numerically. In this work, we investigate the damping of MHD turbulence in a partially ionized medium using 3D two-fluid (ions+neutrals) simulations generated with the AthenaK code. Specifically, we examine the velocity, density, and magnetic field statistics of the two-fluid MHD turbulence in different regimes of neutral-ion coupling. Our results demonstrate that when ions and neutrals are strongly coupled, the velocity statistics resemble those of single-fluid MHD turbulence. Both the velocity structures and kinetic energy spectra of ions and neutrals are similar, while their density structures can be significantly different. With an excess of small-scale sharp density fluctuations in ions, the density spectrum in ions is shallower than that of neutrals. When ions and neutrals are weakly coupled, the turbulence in ions is more severely damped due to the ion-neutral collisional friction than that in neutrals, resulting in a steep kinetic energy spectrum and density spectrum in ions compared to the Kolmogorov spectrum. We also find that the magnetic energy spectrum basically follows the shape of the kinetic energy spectrum of ions, irrespective of the coupling regime. In addition, we find large density fluctuations in ions and neutrals and thus spatially inhomogeneous ionization fractions. Propagation of cosmic rays (CRs) in turbulent and magnetized astrophysical media is a long-standing problem that requires both understanding of the properties of turbulent magnetic fields and their interaction with energetic particles. This review focuses on selected recent theoretical findings made based on the progress in understanding and simulating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. In particular, we address the problem of perpendicular and parallel propagation of CRs and identify the conditions when the perpendicular propagation is superdiffusive and diffusive. For the parallel diffusion, we discuss the problems of the traditionally used diffusion mechanism arising from pitch angle scattering and the possible solutions provided by the recently identified ``mirror diffusion" in the presence of turbulent magnetic mirrors., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

The ubiquitous interstellar turbulence regulates star formation and the scaling relations between the initial velocity differences and the initial separations of stars. We propose that the formation of wide binaries with initial separations $r$ in the range $\sim 10^3~\text{AU} \lesssim r \lesssim 10^5$ AU is a natural consequence of star formation in the turbulent interstellar medium. With the decrease of $r$, the mean turbulent relative velocity $v_\text{tur}$ between a pair of stars decreases, while the largest velocity $v_\text{bon}$ at which they still may be gravitationally bound increases. When $v_\text{tur} < v_\text{bon}$, a wide binary can form. In this formation scenario, we derive the eccentricity distribution $p(e)$ of wide binaries for an arbitrary relative velocity distribution. By adopting a turbulent velocity distribution, we find that wide binaries at a given initial separation generally exhibit a superthermal $p(e)$. The ubiquitous turbulence in astrophysical plasmas is important for both magnetic reconnection and reconnection acceleration. We study the particle acceleration during fast 3D turbulent reconnection with reconnection-driven turbulence. Particles bounce back and forth between the reconnection-driven inflows due to the mirror reflection and convergence of strong magnetic fields. Via successive head-on collisions, the kinetic energy of the inflows is converted into the accelerated particles. Turbulence not only regulates the inflow speed but also introduces various inflow obliquities with respect to the local turbulent magnetic fields. As both the energy gain and escape probability of particles depend on the inflow speed, the spectral index of particle energy spectrum is not universal. We find it in the range from $\approx 2.5$ to $4$, with the steepest spectrum expected at a strong guide field, i.e. a small angle between the total incoming magnetic field and the guide field. Without scattering diffusion needed for confining particles, the reconnection acceleration can be very efficient at a large inflow speed and a weak guide field., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The cascade of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is subject to ion-neutral collisional damping and neutral viscous damping in the partially ionized interstellar medium. By examining the damping effects in the warm and partially ionized local interstellar medium, we find that the interstellar turbulence is damped by neutral viscosity at $\sim 261$ au and cannot account for the turbulent magnetic fluctuations detected by Voyager 1 and 2. The MHD turbulence measured by Voyager in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) should be locally injected in the regime where ions are decoupled from neutrals for its cascade to survive the damping effects. With the imposed ion-neutral decoupling condition, and the strong turbulence condition for the observed Kolmogorov magnetic energy spectrum, we find that the turbulence in the VLISM is sub-Alfv\'{e}nic, and its largest possible injection scale is $\sim 194$ au., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Recently, some fast radio burst (FRB) repeaters were reported to exhibit complex, diverse variations of Faraday rotation measures (RMs), which implies that they are surrounded by an inhomogeneous, dynamically evolving, magnetized environment. We systematically investigate some possible astrophysical processes that may cause RM variations of an FRB repeater. The processes include (1) a supernova remnant (SNR) with a fluctuating medium; (2) a binary system with stellar winds from a massive/giant star companion or stellar flares from a low-mass star companion; (3) a pair plasma medium from a neutron star (including pulsar winds, pulsar wind nebulae, and magnetar flares); (4) outflows from a massive black hole. For the SNR scenario, a large relative RM variation within a few years requires that the SNR is young with a thin and local anisotropic shell, or the size of dense gas clouds in interstellar/circumstellar medium around the SNR is extremely small. If the RM variation is caused by the companion medium in a binary system, it is more likely from the stellar winds of a massive/giant star companion. The RM variation contributed by stellar flares from a low-mass star is disfavored, because this scenario predicts an extremely large relative RM variation during a short period of time. The scenarios invoking a pair plasma from a neutron star can be ruled out due to their extremely low RM contributions. Outflows from a massive black hole could provide a large RM variation if the FRB source is in the vicinity of the black hole., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Magnetic fields play an important role in the formation and evolution of a galaxy, but it is challenging to measure them by observation. Here we study the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3627's magnetic field orientations measured from the synchrotron polarization observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) and from the Velocity Gradient Technique (VGT) using spectroscopic data. The latter employs the magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) turbulence's anisotropy to probe the magnetic fields. Being applied to the CO (2-1) and H$\alpha$ emission lines obtained from the PHANGS-ALMA and PHANGS-MUSE surveys, it reveals the magnetic field orientation globally consistent with the polarization. The agreement of the VGT-CO and polarization suggests that the magnetic fields associated with synchrotron emission also percolate through star-forming regions. The VGT-H$\alpha$ measurement reveals the magnetic fields in the warm ionized medium that permeates the disk and disk's vicinity so that it exhibits less agreement with polarization. We find prominent radial fields measured by synchrotron polarization appear in the transition regions from the spiral arms to the galactic bar, while such morphology is less apparent in the VGT-CO and VGT-H$\alpha$ measured magnetic fields. The radial fields suggest that the magnetic torque is important in removing orbiting gas' angular momentum. We notice that magnetic fields inferred from the dust polarization, VGT-CO, and synchrotron polarization are different in the east arm. We interpret this difference as arising from the fact that the three measurements are tracing the magnetic fields associated with pre-collision, the mixture of pre-collision and post-collision, and post-collision flows, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Magnetic fields on the order of 100 $\mu$G observed in young supernova remnants cannot be amplified by shock compression alone. To investigate the amplification caused by turbulent dynamo, we perform three-dimensional MHD simulations of the interaction between shock wave and inhomogeneous density distribution with a shallow spectrum in the preshock medium. The postshock turbulence is mainly driven by the strongest preshock density contrast and follows the Kolmogorov scaling. The resulting turbulence amplifies the postshock magnetic field. The time evolution of the magnetic fields agrees with the prediction of the nonlinear turbulent dynamo theory in Xu & Lazarian (2016). When the initial weak magnetic field is perpendicular to the shock normal, the maximum amplification of the field's strength achieves a factor of $\approx200$, which is twice larger than that for a parallel shock. We find that the perpendicular shock exhibits a smaller turbulent Alfv\'en Mach number in the vicinity of the shock front than the parallel shock. However, the strongest magnetic field has a low volume filling factor and is limited by the turbulent energy due to the reconnection diffusion taking place in a turbulent and magnetized fluid. The magnetic field strength averaged along the $z$-axis is reduced by a factor $\gtrsim10$. We decompose the turbulent velocity and magnetic field into solenoidal and compressive modes. The solenoidal mode is dominant and evolves to follow the Kolmogorov scaling, even though the preshock density distribution has a shallow spectrum. Delayed radio flares of optical tidal disruption events (TDEs) indicate the existence of non-relativistic outflows accompanying TDEs. The interaction of TDE outflows with the surrounding circumnuclear medium creates quasi-perpendicular shocks in the presence of toroidal magnetic fields. Because of the large shock obliquity and large outflow velocity, we find that the shock acceleration induced by TDE outflows generally leads to a steep particle energy spectrum, with the power-law index significantly larger than the "universal" index for a parallel shock. The measured synchrotron spectral indices of recently detected TDE radio flares are consistent with our theoretical expectation. Molecular gas is believed to be the fuel for star formation and nuclear activity in Seyfert galaxies. To explore the role of magnetic fields in funneling molecular gas into the nuclear region, measurements of the magnetic fields embedded in molecular gas are needed. By applying the new velocity gradient technique (VGT) to ALMA and PAWS's CO isotopolog data, we obtain the first detection of CO-associated magnetic fields in several nearby Seyfert galaxies and their unprecedented high-resolution magnetic field maps. The VGT-measured magnetic fields in molecular gas globally agree with those inferred from existing HAWC+ dust polarization and VLA synchrotron polarization. An overall good alignment between the magnetic fields traced by VGT-CO and by synchrotron polarization may support the correlation between star formation and cosmic ray generation. We find that the magnetic fields traced by VGT-CO have a significant radial component in the central regions of most Seyferts in our sample, where efficient molecular gas inflows or outflows may happen. In particular, we find local misalignment between the magnetic fields traced by CO and dust polarization within the nuclear ring of NGC 1097, and the former aligns with the central bar's orientation. This misalignment reveals different magnetic field configurations in different gas phases and may provide an observational diagnostic for the ongoing multi-phase fueling of Seyfert activity., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

The interstellar medium (ISM) is turbulent on all scales and in all phases. In this paper, we study turbulence with different tracers in four nearby star-forming regions: Orion, Ophiuchus, Perseus, and Taurus. We combine the APOGEE-2 and Gaia surveys to obtain the full 6-dimensional measurements of positions and velocities of young stars in these regions. The velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars show a universal scaling of turbulence. We also obtain H{\alpha} gas kinematics in these four regions from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper. The VSFs of the H{\alpha} are more diverse compared to the stars. In regions with recent supernova activities, they show characteristics of local energy injections and higher amplitudes compared to the VSFs of stars and of CO from the literature. Such difference in amplitude of the VSFs can be explained by the different energy and momentum transport from supernovae into different phases of the ISM, thus resulting in higher levels of turbulence in the warm ionized phase traced by H{\alpha}. In regions without recent supernova activities, the VSFs of young stars, H{\alpha}, and CO are generally consistent, indicating well-coupled turbulence between different phases. Within individual regions, the brighter parts of the H{\alpha} gas tend to have a higher level of turbulence than the low-emission parts. The interaction of turbulence, magnetic fields, self-gravity, and stellar feedback within molecular clouds is crucial for understanding star formation. We study the effects of self-gravity and outflow feedback on the properties of the turbulent velocity via the structure function over length scales from $\sim$ 0.01 pc to 2 pc. We analyze a series of three-dimensional, magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of star cluster formation. We find outflow feedback can change the scaling of velocity fluctuations but still roughly being in between Kolmogorov and Burgers turbulence. We observe that self-gravity and protostellar outflows increase the velocity fluctuations over all length scales. Outflows can amplify the velocity fluctuations by up to a factor of $\sim$7 on scales $\sim$ 0.01 - 0.2 pc and drive turbulence up to a scale of $\sim$ 1 pc. The amplified velocity fluctuations provide more support against gravity and enhance fragmentation on small scales. The self-gravity's effect is more significant on smaller dense clumps and it increases the fraction of the compressive velocity component up to a scale of $\sim$ 0.2 pc. However, outflow feedback drives both solenoidal and compressive modes, but it induces a higher fraction of solenoidal modes relative to compressive modes. Thus, with outflows, the dense core ends up with a slightly higher fraction of solenoidal modes. We find that the compressible fraction is fairly constant with about 1/3 on scales $\sim$ 0.1 - 0.2 pc. Alfv\'{e}nic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfv\'{e}nic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We also compare the turbulent damping of streaming instability with ion-neutral collisional damping, which becomes the dominant damping effect at a sufficiently low ionization fraction. We study the streaming instability of GeV$-100~$GeV cosmic rays (CRs) and its damping in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the damping of streaming instability is dominated by ion-neutral collisional damping in weakly ionized molecular clouds, turbulent damping in the highly ionized warm medium, and nonlinear Landau damping in the Galactic halo. Only in the Galactic halo, is the streaming speed of CRs close to the Alfv\'{e}n speed. Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence plays an important role in both suppressing the streaming instability and regulating the diffusion of streaming CRs via magnetic field line tangling, with the effective mean free path of streaming CRs in the observer frame determined by the Alfv\'{e}nic scale in super-Alfv\'{e}nic turbulence. The resulting diffusion coefficient is sensitive to Alfv\'{e}n Mach number, which has a large range of values in the multi-phase ISM. Owing to the complexity of turbulent magnetic fields, modeling the diffusion of cosmic rays is challenging. Based on the current understanding of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, we use test particles to examine the cosmic rays' superdiffusion in the direction perpendicular to the mean magnetic field. By changing Alfven Mach number $M_A$ and sonic Mach number $M_S$ of compressible MHD simulations, our study covers a wide range of astrophysical conditions including subsonic warm gas phase and supersonic cold molecular gas. We show that freely streaming cosmic rays' perpendicular displacement increases as 3/2 to the power of the time traveled along local magnetic field lines. This power-law index changes to 3/4 if the parallel propagation is diffusive. We find that the cosmic rays' parallel mean free path decreases in a power-law relation of $M_A^{-2}$ in supersonic turbulence. We investigate the energy fraction of slow, fast, and Alfvenic modes and confirm the dominance of Alfvenic modes in the perpendicular superdiffusion. In particular, the energy fraction of fast mode, which is the main agent for pitch-angle scattering, increases with $M_A$ but is insensitive to $M_S \ge 2$. Extragalactic Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) have large dispersion measures (DMs) and are unique probes of intergalactic electron density fluctuations. By using the recently released First CHIME/FRB Catalog, we reexamined the structure function (SF) of DM fluctuations. It shows a large DM fluctuation similar to that previously reported in Xu & Zhang (2020), but no clear correlation hinting towards large scale turbulence is reproduced with this larger sample. To suppress the distortion effect from FRB distances and their host DMs, we focus on a subset of CHIME catalog with DM $<500$ pc cm$^{-3}$. A trend of non-constant SF and non-zero correlation function (CF) at angular separations $\theta$ less than $10^\circ$ is seen, but with large statistical uncertainties. The difference found between SF and that derived from CF at $\theta \lesssim 10^\circ$ can be ascribed to the large statistical uncertainties or the density inhomogeneities on scales on the order of $100$ Mpc. We investigate shock acceleration in a realistic astrophysical environment with density inhomogeneities. The turbulence induced by the interaction of the shock precursor with upstream density fluctuations amplifies both upstream and downstream magnetic fields via the turbulent dynamo. The dynamo-amplified turbulent magnetic fields (a) introduce variations of shock obliquities along the shock face, (b) enable energy gain through a combination of shock drift and diffusive processes, (c) give rise to various spectral indices of accelerated particles, (d) regulate the diffusion of particles both parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field, and (e) increase the shock acceleration efficiency. Our results demonstrate that upstream density inhomogeneities and dynamo amplification of magnetic fields play an important role in shock acceleration, and thus shock acceleration depends on the condition of the ambient interstellar environment. Recent gamma-ray observations reveal inhomogeneous diffusion of cosmic rays (CRs) in the interstellar medium (ISM). This is expected as the diffusion of CRs depends on the properties of turbulence, which can vary widely in the multi-phase ISM. We focus on the mirror diffusion arising in highly compressible turbulence in molecular clouds (MCs) around supernova remnants (SNRs), where the magnetic mirroring effect results in significant suppression of diffusion of CRs near CR sources. Significant energy loss via proton-proton interactions due to slow diffusion flattens the low-energy CR spectrum, while the high-energy CR spectrum is steepened due to the strong dependence of mirror diffusion on CR energy. Small-scale turbulent dynamo is responsible for the amplification of magnetic fields on scales smaller than the driving scale of turbulence in diverse astrophysical media. Most earlier dynamo theories concern the kinematic regime and small-scale magnetic field amplification. Here we review our recent progress in developing the theories for the nonlinear dynamo and the dynamo regime in a partially ionized plasma. The importance of reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields is identified for both the nonlinear dynamo and magnetic field amplification during gravitational contraction. For the dynamo in a partially ionized plasma, the coupling state between neutrals and ions and the ion-neutral collisional damping can significantly affect the dynamo behavior and the resulting magnetic field structure. We present both our analytical predictions and numerical tests with a two-fluid dynamo simulation on the dynamo features in this regime. In addition, to illustrate the astrophysical implications, we discuss several examples for the applications of the dynamo theory to studying magnetic field evolution in both preshock and postshock regions of supernova remnants, in weakly magnetized molecular clouds, during the (primordial) star formation, and during the first galaxy formation., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, published in Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics

As the fundamental physical process with many astrophysical implications, the diffusion of cosmic rays (CRs) is determined by their interaction with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. We consider the magnetic mirroring effect arising from MHD turbulence on the diffusion of CRs. Due to the intrinsic superdiffusion of turbulent magnetic fields, CRs with large pitch angles that undergo mirror reflection, i.e., bouncing CRs, are not trapped between magnetic mirrors, but move diffusively along the turbulent magnetic field, leading to a new type of parallel diffusion, i.e., mirror diffusion. This mirror diffusion is in general slower than the diffusion of non-bouncing CRs with small pitch angles that undergo gyroresonant scattering. The critical pitch angle at the balance between magnetic mirroring and pitch-angle scattering is important for determining the diffusion coefficients of both bouncing and non-bouncing CRs and their scalings with the CR energy. Direct measurements of three-dimensional magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) are not achievable. However, the anisotropic nature of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence provides a novel way of tracing the magnetic fields. Guided by the advanced understanding of turbulence's anisotropy in the Position-Position-Velocity (PPV) space, we extend the Structure-Function Analysis (SFA) to measure both the three-dimensional magnetic field orientation and Alfven Mach number $M_A$, which provides the information on magnetic field strength. Following the theoretical framework developed in Kandel et al. (2016), we find that the anisotropy in a given velocity channel is affected by the inclination angle between the 3D magnetic field direction and the line-of-sight as well as media magnetization. We analyze the synthetic PPV cubes generated by incompressible and compressible MHD simulations. We confirm that the PPV channel's intensity fluctuations measured in various position angles reveal plane-of-the-sky magnetic field orientation. We show that by varying the channel width, the anisotropies of the intensity fluctuations in PPV space can be used to simultaneously estimate both magnetic field inclination angle and strength of total magnetic fields., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

As the standard gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt-emission model, the internal shock (IS) model can reproduce the fast-rise and slow-decay features of the pulses in the GRB light curve. The time- and energy-dependent polarization can deliver important physical information on the emission region and can be used to test models. Polarization predictions for the GRB prompt phase with the magnetized IS model should be investigated carefully. The magnetic field of the magnetized IS model is very likely to be mixed and decays with radius. The synchrotron emission in the presence of such a decaying magnetic field can recover the Band-like spectrum of the GRB prompt phase. We investigate the dependence of the polarization of GRB prompt emission on both time and energy in the framework of the magnetized IS model. Due to the large range of parameters, it is hard to distinguish the magnetized IS model and the magnetic-reconnection model through polarization degree (PD) curves. The energy-dependent PD could increase toward the high-energy band for the magnetized IS model, while it decreases to zero above the megaelectronvolt band for the dissipative photosphere model. Therefore, we conclude that the energy dependence of PD can be used to distinguish these two models for the GRB prompt emission. Finally, we find that, independent of the observational energy band, the profiles of the $\xi_B-PD$ curve for the time-integrated and time-resolved PDs are very similar, where $\xi_B$ is the magnetic field strength ratio of the ordered component to the random component., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

The interstellar turbulence is magnetized and thus anisotropic. The anisotropy of turbulent magnetic fields and velocities is imprinted in the related observables, rotation measures (RMs), and velocity centroids (VCs). This anisotropy provides valuable information on both the direction and strength of the magnetic field. However, its measurement is difficult especially in highly supersonic turbulence in cold interstellar phases due to the distortions by isotropic density fluctuations. By using 3D simulations of supersonic and sub-Alfv\'enic magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) turbulence, we find that the problem can be alleviated when we selectively sample the volume-filling low-density regions in supersonic MHD turbulence. Our results show that in these low-density regions, the anisotropy of RM and VC fluctuations depends on the Alfv\'enic Mach number as $\rm M_A^{-4/3}$. This anisotropy-$\rm M_A$ relation is theoretically expected for sub-Alfv 'enic MHD turbulence and confirmed by our synthetic observations of $^{12}$CO emission. Stars form in molecular clouds in the interstellar medium (ISM) with a turbulent kinematic state. Newborn stars therefore should retain the turbulent kinematics of their natal clouds. Gaia DR2 and APOGEE-2 surveys in combination provide three-dimensional (3D) positions and 3D velocities of young stars in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. Using the full 6D measurements, we compute the velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars in six different groups within the Orion Complex. We find that the motions of stars in all diffuse groups exhibit strong characteristics of turbulence. Their first-order VSFs have a power-law exponent ranging from $\sim0.2-0.5$ on scales of a few to a few tens of pc, generally consistent with Larson's relation. On the other hand, dense star clusters, such as the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), have experienced rapid dynamical relaxation, and have lost the memory of the initial turbulent kinematics. The VSFs of several individual groups and the whole Complex all show features supporting local energy injection from supernovae. The measured strength of turbulence depends on the location relative to the supernova epicenters and the formation history of the groups. Our detection of turbulence traced by young stars introduces a new method of probing the turbulent kinematics of the ISM. Probing magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM) is notoriously challenging. Motivated by the modern theories of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and turbulence anisotropy, we introduce the Structure-Function Analysis (SFA) as a new approach to measure the magnetic field orientation and estimate the magnetization. We analyze the statistics of turbulent velocities in three-dimensional compressible MHD simulations through the second-order structure functions in both local and global reference frames. In the sub-Alfvenic turbulence with the magnetic energy larger than the turbulent energy, the SFA of turbulent velocities measured in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field can be significantly different. Their ratio has a power-law dependence on the Alfven Mach number $M_A$, which is inversely proportional to the magnetic field strength. We demonstrate that the anisotropic structure functions of turbulent velocities can be used to estimate both the orientation and strength of magnetic fields. The Galactic interstellar turbulence affects the density distribution and star formation. We introduce a new method of measuring interstellar turbulent density spectra by using the dispersion measures (DMs) of a large sample of pulsars. Without the need of invoking multiple tracers, we obtain nonuniversal density spectra in the multi-phase interstellar medium over different ranges of length scales. By comparing the analytical structure function of DMs with the observationally measured one in different areas of sky, we find a shallow density spectrum arising from the supersonic turbulence in cold interstellar phases, and a Kolmogorov-like density spectrum in the diffuse warm ionized medium (WIM). Both spectra extend up to hundreds of pc. On larger scales, we for the first time identify a steep density spectrum in the diffuse WIM extending up to several kpc. Via amplification by turbulent dynamo, magnetic fields can be potentially important for the formation of the first stars. To examine the dynamo behavior during the gravitational collapse of primordial gas, we extend the theory of nonlinear turbulent dynamo to include the effect of gravitational compression. The relative importance between dynamo and compression varies during contraction, with the transition from dynamo- to compression-dominated amplification of magnetic fields with the increase of density. In the nonlinear stage of magnetic field amplification with the scale-by-scale energy equipartition between turbulence and magnetic fields, reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence becomes important. It causes the violation of flux-freezing condition and accounts for (a) the small growth rate of nonlinear dynamo, (b) the weak dependence of magnetic energy on density during contraction, (c) the saturated magnetic energy, and (d) the large correlation length of magnetic fields. The turbulence in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) plays an important role in various astrophysical processes across cosmic time, but it is very challenging to constrain its statistical properties both observationally and numerically. Via the statistical analysis of turbulence along different sightlines toward a population of fast radio bursts (FRBs), we demonstrate that FRBs provide a unique tool to probe the intergalactic turbulence. We measure the structure function (SF) of dispersion measures (DMs) of FRBs to study the multi-scale electron density fluctuations induced by the intergalactic turbulence. The SF has a large amplitude and a Kolmogorov power-law scaling with angular separations, showing large and correlated DM fluctuations over a range of length scales. Given that the DMs of FRBs are IGM dominated, our result tentatively suggests that the intergalactic turbulence has a Kolmogorov power spectrum and an outer scale on the order of $100$ Mpc., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Local magnetic reversals are an inseparable part of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence whose collective outcome on an arbitrary scale in the inertial range may lead to a global stochastic reconnection event with a rate independent of small scale physics. We show that this picture is intimately related to the nanoflare theory of the solar corona. First, we argue that due to stochastic flux freezing, a generalized version of flux freezing in turbulence, the magnetic field follows the turbulent flow in a statistical sense. Bending and stretching an initially smooth field, therefore, the turbulence generally increases the magnetic spatial complexity. Strong magnetic shears associated with such a highly tangled field can trigger local reversals and field annihilations that convert magnetic energy into kinetic and thermal energy respectively. The former maintains the turbulence, which incidentally continues to entangle the field completing the cycle, while the latter enhances the heat generation in the dissipative range. We support this theoretical picture invoking recent analytical and numerical studies which suggest a correlation between magnetic complexity and magnetic energy dissipation. The amplification of multiple local, in-phase reversals by super-linear Richardson diffusion may initiate a global reconnection at larger scales, however, even in the absence of such a global stochastic reconnection, the small scale reversals will continue to interact with the turbulence. We employ conventional scaling laws of MHD turbulence to illustrate that these local events are indeed efficient in both enhancing the turbulence and generating heat. Finally, using an MHD numerical simulation, we show that the time evolution of the magnetic complexity is statistically correlated with the kinetic energy injection rate and/or magnetic-to-thermal energy conversion rate.

Astrophysical plasmas are turbulent and magnetized. The interaction between cosmic rays (CRs) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is a fundamental astrophysical process. Based on the current understanding of MHD turbulence, we revisit the trapping of CRs by magnetic mirrors in the context of MHD turbulence. In compressible MHD turbulence, isotropic fast modes dominate both trapping and gyroresonant scattering of CRs. The presence of trapping significantly suppresses the pitch-angle scattering and the spatial diffusion of CRs along the magnetic field. The resulting parallel diffusion coefficient has a weaker dependence on CR energy at higher energies. In incompressible MHD turbulence, the trapping by pseudo-Alfv\'{e}n modes dominates over the gyroresonant scattering by anisotropic Alfv\'{e}n and pseudo-Alfv\'{e}n modes at all pitch angles and prevents CRs from diffusion., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Externally driven interstellar turbulence plays an important role in shaping the density structure in molecular clouds. Here we study the dynamical role of internally driven turbulence in a self-gravitating molecular cloud core. Depending on the initial conditions and evolutionary stages, we find that a self-gravitating core in the presence of gravity-driven turbulence can undergo constant, decelerated, and accelerated infall, and thus has various radial velocity profiles. In the gravity-dominated central region, a higher level of turbulence results in a lower infall velocity, a higher density, and a lower mass accretion rate. As an important implication of this study, efficient reconnection diffusion of magnetic fields against the gravitational drag naturally occurs due to the gravity-driven turbulence, without invoking externally driven turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Magnetic reconnection, topological change in magnetic fields, is a fundamental process in magnetized plasmas. It is associated with energy release in regions of magnetic field annihilation, but this is only one facet of this process. Astrophysical flows normally have very large Reynolds numbers and are expected to be turbulent, in agreement with observations. In strong turbulence magnetic lines constantly reconnect everywhere at all scales, making magnetic reconnection an intrinsic part of turbulent cascade. We note that this is inconsistent with the usual practice of regarding magnetic lines as persistent dynamical elements. A number of theoretical, numerical, and observational studies, starting with Lazarian & Vishniac (1999), demonstrated that 3D turbulence makes magnetic reconnection fast and that these two processes are intrinsically connected. We discuss the dramatic violation of the textbook concept of magnetic flux-freezing in the presence of turbulence and demonstrate that in the presence of turbulence the plasma effects are subdominant to turbulence as far as the magnetic reconnection is concerned. This justifies an MHD-like treatment of magnetic reconnection at scales much larger than the relevant plasma scales. We discuss numerical and observational evidences supporting the turbulent reconnection model. In particular, we show that tearing reconnection is suppressed in 3D and, unlike the 2D case, the 3D reconnection induces turbulence that makes reconnection independent of resistivity. We show that turbulent reconnection dramatically affects the key astrophysical processes, e.g., star formation, turbulent dynamo, acceleration of cosmic rays. We provide criticism of the concept of "reconnection-mediated turbulence" and explain why turbulent reconnection is very different from enhanced turbulent resistivity and hyper-resistivity, and why the latter has fatal conceptual flaws., Comment: 94 pages, 39 figures

Particle acceleration is a fundamental process in many high-energy astrophysical environments and determines the spectral features of their synchrotron emission. We have studied the adiabatic stochastic acceleration (ASA) of electrons arising from the basic dynamics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence and found that the ASA acts to efficiently harden the injected electron energy spectrum. The dominance of the ASA at low energies and the dominance of synchrotron cooling at high energies result in a broken power-law shape of both electron energy spectrum and photon synchrotron spectrum. Starburst galaxies are efficient $\gamma$-ray producers, because their high supernova rates generate copious cosmic ray (CR) protons, and their high gas densities act as thick targets off which these protons can produce neutral pions and thence $\gamma$-rays. In this paper we present a first-principles calculation of the mechanisms by which CRs propagate through such environments, combining astrochemical models with analysis of turbulence in weakly ionised plasma. We show that CRs cannot scatter off the strong large-scale turbulence found in starbursts, because efficient ion-neutral damping prevents such turbulence from cascading down to the scales of CR gyroradii. Instead, CRs stream along field lines at a rate determined by the competition between streaming instability and ion-neutral damping, leading to transport via a process of field line random walk. This results in an effective diffusion coefficient that is nearly energy-independent up to CR energies of $\sim 1$ TeV. We apply our computed diffusion coefficient to a simple model of CR escape and loss, and show that the resulting $\gamma$-ray spectra are in good agreement with the observed spectra of the starbursts NGC 253, M82, and Arp 220. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to provide energy that prevents catastrophic cooling in the centers of massive galaxies and galaxy clusters. However, it remains unclear how this "feedback" process operates. We use high-resolution optical data to study the kinematics of multi-phase filamentary structures by measuring the velocity structure function (VSF) of the filaments over a wide range of scales in the centers of three nearby galaxy clusters: Perseus, Abell 2597 and Virgo. We find that the motions of the filaments are turbulent in all three clusters studied. There is a clear correlation between features of the VSFs and the sizes of bubbles inflated by SMBH driven jets. Our study demonstrates that SMBHs are the main driver of turbulent gas motions in the centers of galaxy clusters and suggests that this turbulence is an important channel for coupling feedback to the environment. Our measured amplitude of turbulence is in good agreement with Hitomi Doppler line broadening measurement and X-ray surface brightness fluctuation analysis, suggesting that the motion of the cold filaments is well-coupled to that of the hot gas. The smallest scales we probe are comparable to the mean free path in the intracluster medium (ICM). Our direct detection of turbulence on these scales provides the clearest evidence to date that isotropic viscosity is suppressed in the weakly-collisional, magnetized intracluster plasma., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Velocity statistics is a direct probe of the dynamics of interstellar turbulence. Its observational measurements are very challenging due to the convolution between density and velocity and projection effects. We introduce the projected velocity structure function, which can be generally applied to statistical studies of both sub- and super-sonic turbulence in different interstellar phases. It recovers the turbulent velocity spectrum from the projected velocity field in different regimes, and when the thickness of a cloud is less than the driving scale of turbulence, it can also be used to determine the cloud thickness and the turbulence driving scale. By applying it to the existing core velocity dispersion measurements of the Taurus cloud, we find a transition from the Kolmogorov to the Burgers scaling of turbulent velocities with decreasing length scales, corresponding to the large-scale solenoidal motions and small-scale compressive motions, respectively. The latter occupy a small fraction of the volume and can be selectively sampled by clusters of cores with the typical cluster size indicated by the transition scale., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This study is motivated by recent observations on ubiquitous interstellar density filaments and guided by modern theories of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The interstellar turbulence shapes the observed density structures. As the fundamental dynamics of compressible MHD turbulence, perpendicular turbulent mixing of density fluctuations entails elongated density structures aligned with the local magnetic field, accounting for low-density parallel filaments seen in diffuse atomic and molecular gas. The elongation of low-density parallel filaments depends on the turbulence anisotropy. When taking into account the partial ionization, we find that the minimum width of parallel filaments in the cold neutral medium and molecular clouds is determined by the neutral-ion decoupling scale perpendicular to magnetic field.
