4. Efficacy of Text Messaging and Personal Consultation by Pharmacy Students Among Adults With Hypertension: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

BackgroundHypertension is one of the leading risk factors for ischemic heart diseases, and high rates of hypertension prevalence have either remained the same or increased in developing countries in recent years. Unfortunately, about 20% to 50% of patients with chronic diseases have been nonadherent to their drug therapy. SMS text messaging and pharmacy student–led consultations have the potential to help patients manage their blood pressure (BP). ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of SMS text messaging and consultation to manage the BP of Chinese patients with hypertension. MethodsWe conducted a two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial among patients with hypertension in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, China, and recruited 384 patients from 8 community health care centers. Patients were randomized into an intervention group to receive SMS text messages and consultations or into a control group to receive usual care for 3 months. We sent SMS text messages at 3-day intervals and collected data at baseline (including demographics, clinical outcomes, medication complexity, side effects, patient behavior, knowledge about hypertension, BP, and medication adherence) and the 3-month follow-up (including BP, medication adherence, and knowledge about hypertension). ResultsWe assessed 445 patients with hypertension and excluded 61 patients who were not eligible or who had not filled out their questionnaires. The mean age of the patients was 68.5 (SD 7.9) years in the intervention group and 69.4 (SD 9.7) years in the control group, and the sample was primarily female (265/384, 69.0%). Patients in the intervention group showed significant improvements in systolic BP (SBP; mean 134.5 mm Hg, SD 15.5 mm Hg vs mean 140.7 mm Hg, SD 15.2 mm Hg; P=.001), medication adherence (mean 7.4, SD 1.2 vs mean 7.0, SD 1.3; P=.04), and knowledge about hypertension (mean 6.3, SD 0.9 vs mean 5.9, SD 1.2; P=.004) compared with those in the control group. In measures of diastolic BP (DBP), the two arms showed nonsignificant improvements (mean 78.2 mm Hg, SD 9.0 mm Hg vs mean 77.2 mm Hg, SD 10.3 mm Hg; P=.06). In total, 176 patients had controlled BP at the 3-month follow-up (98 patients in the intervention group vs 78 patients in the control group), but it was nonsignificant (P=.08). ConclusionsThe use of SMS text messaging and consultation to manage SBP and improve medication adherence is effective, feasible, and acceptable among Chinese patients with hypertension, although a significant difference was not observed with regard to DBP. It is important to maximize the potential of SMS text messaging and consultation by increasing the feasibility and acceptance of mobile interventions and conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis on this method. 5. Learning Invariant Inter-pixel Correlations for Superpixel Generation

Abstract

Deep superpixel algorithms have made remarkable strides by substituting hand-crafted features with learnable ones. Nevertheless, we observe that existing deep superpixel methods, serving as mid-level representation operations, remain sensitive to the statistical properties (e.g., color distribution, high-level semantics) embedded within the training dataset. Consequently, learnable features exhibit constrained discriminative capability, resulting in unsatisfactory pixel grouping performance, particularly in untrainable application scenarios. To address this issue, we propose the Content Disentangle Superpixel (CDS) algorithm to selectively separate the invariant inter-pixel correlations and statistical properties, i.e., style noise. Specifically, We first construct auxiliary modalities that are homologous to the original RGB image but have substantial stylistic variations. Then, driven by mutual information, we propose the local-grid correlation alignment across modalities to reduce the distribution discrepancy of adaptively selected features and learn invariant inter-pixel correlations. Afterwards, we perform global-style mutual information minimization to enforce the separation of invariant content and train data styles. The experimental results on four benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our approach to existing state-of-the-art methods, regarding boundary adherence, generalization, and efficiency. Abstract

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a high-energy phosphate compound and the most direct energy source in organisms. ATP is an essential biomarker for evaluating cell viability in biology. Researchers often use ATP bioluminescence to measure the ATP of organoid after drug to evaluate the drug efficacy. However, ATP bioluminescence has some limitations, leading to unreliable drug screening results. Performing ATP bioluminescence causes cell lysis of organoids, so it is impossible to observe organoids' long-term viability changes after medication continually. To overcome the disadvantages of ATP bioluminescence, we propose Ins-ATP, a non-invasive strategy, the first organoid ATP estimation model based on the high-throughput microscopic image. Ins-ATP directly estimates the ATP of organoids from high-throughput microscopic images, so that it does not influence the drug reactions of organoids. Therefore, the ATP change of organoids can be observed for a long time to obtain more stable results. Experimental results show that the ATP estimation by Ins-ATP is in good agreement with those determined by ATP bioluminescence. Specifically, the predictions of Ins-ATP are consistent with the results measured by ATP bioluminescence in the efficacy evaluation experiments of different drugs.

Abstract

With the recent rise of Metaverse, online multiplayer VR applications are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Allowing users to move easily in virtual environments is crucial for high-quality experiences in such collaborative VR applications. This paper focuses on redirected walking technology (RDW) to allow users to move beyond the confines of the limited physical environments (PE). The existing RDW methods lack the scheme to coordinate multiple users in different PEs, and thus have the issue of triggering too many resets for all the users. We propose a novel multi-user RDW method that is able to significantly reduce the overall reset number and give users a better immersive experience by providing a more continuous exploration. Our key idea is to first find out the "bottleneck" user that may cause all users to be reset and estimate the time to reset, and then redirect all the users to favorable poses during that maximized bottleneck time to ensure the subsequent resets can be postponed as much as possible. More particularly, we develop methods to estimate the time of possibly encountering obstacles and the reachable area for a specific pose to enable the prediction of the next reset caused by any user. Our experiments and user study found that our method outperforms existing RDW methods in online VR applications.

Abstract

In recent years， with the continuous improvement of people’s awareness of health， environmental protection， and safety， as well as the implementation of relevant laws and regulations， higher requirements have been put forward in industry for volatile corrosion inhibitors that play a protective role in the production and application of metal products.Consequently， the use of some highly toxic and environmentally impactful volatile corrosion inhibitors has been restricted.Therefore， developing and promoting a new generation of environmentally friendly and safe vapor phase corrosion inhibitors is imperative.Additionally， the development and utilization of renewable resources constitute an important measure for the sustainable development of human society.Renewable resources， derived from natural animal and plant sources， particularly crops， fruits， vegetables and timber processing waste， are rich in natural antioxidants， preservatives and antimicrobial agents.They hold great potential for the development and utilization of vapor phase corrosion inhibitors.Currently， domestic and foreign researchers have conducted focused research on this new generation of green vapor phase corrosion inhibitors.In this paper， the history of volatile corrosion inhibitors was summarized， followed by a discussion on the current research of green volatile corrosion inhibitors， including amino acids， polyaspartate， plant compounds and plant extracts.The future development trend of green volatile corrosion inhibitors was then projected，aiming to provide necessary support for their industrialized application.
