A term called the quasi-projection pair $(P,Q)$ was introduced recently by the authors, where $P$ is a projection and $Q$ is an idempotent on a Hilbert $C^*$-module $H$ satisfying $Q^*=(2P-I)Q(2P-I)$, in which $Q^*$ is the adjoint operator of the idempotent $Q$ and $I$ is the identity operator on $H$. Some fundamental issues on quasi-projection pairs, such as the block matrix representations for quasi-projection pairs and the $C^*$-morphisms associated with quasi-projection pairs, are worthwhile to be investigated. This paper aims to make some preparations. One object called the semi-harmonious quasi-projection pair is introduced in the general setting of the adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. The main purpose of this paper is to give a full characterization of the operator distances from projections to an idempotent, which includes the minimum value, the maximum value and the intermediate values. Let $H$ be a Hilbert space and $\mathbb{B}(H)$ be the set of bounded linear operators on $H$. Given an arbitrary idempotent $Q\in \mathbb{B}(H)$, it is proved that $$\|m(Q)-Q\|\le \|P-Q\|\le \|I-m(Q)-Q\|$$ for every projection $P$ on $H$, in which $I$ is the identity operator on $H$ and $m(Q)$ is a specific projection called the matched projection of $Q$. When $Q\in\mathbb{B}(H)$ is a non-projection idempotent, it is proved that for every number $\alpha$ contained in the interval $\left[\|m(Q)-Q\|,\|I-m(Q)-Q\|\right]$, there exists a projection $P\in \mathbb{B}(H)$ such that $\|P-Q\|=\alpha$. Two uniqueness problems concerning the projections that attain the minimum value or the maximum value are also dealt with.

The main purpose of this paper is, in the general setting of the adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, to develop two new tools that can be applied to deal with the positive solutions of certain operator equations, the operator norm as well as the numerical radius, respectively. Among other things, the positivity of a $2\times 2$ block operator matrix is clarified without any preconditions on its entries, and a generalized version of the mixed Schwarz inequality with a parameter is derived. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the non-triviality of this newly obtained inequality.

This paper deals mainly with some aspects of the adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. A new tool called the generalized polar decomposition for each adjointable operator is introduced and clarified. As an application, the general theory of the weakly complementable operators is set up in the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules. It is proved that there exists an operator equation which has a unique solution, whereas this unique solution fails to be the reduced solution. Some investigations are also carried out in the Hilbert space case. It is proved that there exist a closed subspace $M$ of certain Hilbert space $K$ and an operator $T\in \mathbb{B}(K)$ such that $T$ is $(M,M)$-weakly complementable, whereas $T$ fails to be $(M,M)$-complementable. The solvability of the equation $$A:B=X^*AX+(I-X)^*B(I-X) \quad (X\in\mathbb{B}(H))$$ is also dealt with in the Hilbert space case, where $A,B\in \mathbb{B}(H)$ are two general positive operators, and $A:B$ denotes their parallel sum. Among other things, it is shown that there exist certain positive operators $A$ and $B$ on the Hilbert space $\ell^2(\mathbb{N})\oplus \ell^2(\mathbb{N})$ such that the above equation has no solution., Comment: This version is accepted for publication in Banach Journal of Mathematical Analysis

For each pair of matrices $A$ and $B$ with the same order, let $\|A-B\|_F$ denote their Frobenius distance. This paper deals mainly with the Frobenius distances from projections to an idempotent matrix. For every idempotent $Q\in \mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$, a projection $m(Q)$ called the matched projection can be induced. It is proved that $m(Q)$ is the unique projection whose Frobenius distance away from $Q$ takes the minimum value among all the Frobenius distances from projections to $Q$, while $I_n-m(Q)$ is the unique projection whose Frobenius distance away from $Q$ takes the maximum value. Furthermore, it is proved that for every number $\alpha$ between the minimum value and the maximum value, there exists a projection $P$ whose Frobenius distance away from $Q$ takes the value $\alpha$. Based on the above characterization of the minimum distance, some Frobenius norm upper bounds and lower bounds of $\|P-Q\|_F$ are derived under the condition of $PQ=Q$ on a projection $P$ and an idempotent $Q$.

The aim of this paper is to give new characterizations of some fundamental issues about idempotents. In the general setting of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, a new term of quasi-projection pair is introduced. For each idempotent $Q$, a projection $m(Q)$, called the matched projection of $Q$, is constructed. It is shown that $Q$ and $m(Q)$ as idempotents are homotopic, and $\big(m(Q),Q\big)$ is a quasi-projection pair. Some formulas for $m(Q)$ are derived. In the setting of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, this paper deals with the polar decomposition of the product of three operators. The relationship between the polar decompositions associated with three operators is clarified. Based on this relationship, a formula for the polar decomposition of a multiplicative perturbation of an operator is provided. Let $T$ be an adjointable operator on a Hilbert $C^*$-module such that $T$ has the polar decomposition $T=UT|$. For each natural number $n$, $T$ is called an $(n+1)$-centered operator if $T^k=U^k|T^k|$ is the polar decomposition for $1\le k\le n+1$. This paper initiates the study of the $(n+1)$-centered operator via the generalized Aluthge transform and the generalized iterative Aluthge transform. Motivated by two norm equations used to characterize the Friedrichs angle, this paper studies $C^*$-isomorphisms associated with two projections by introducing the matched triple and the semi-harmonious pair of projections. A triple $(P,Q,H)$ is said to be matched if $H$ is a Hilbert $C^*$-module, $P$ and $Q$ are projections on $H$ such that their infimum $P\wedge Q$ exists as an element of $\mathcal{L}(H)$, where $\mathcal{L}(H)$ denotes the set of all adjointable operators on $H$. The $C^*$-subalgebras of $\mathcal{L}(H)$ generated by elements in $\{P-P\wedge Q, Q-P\wedge Q, I\}$ and $\{P,Q,P\wedge Q,I\}$ are denoted by $i(P,Q,H)$ and $o(P,Q,H)$, respectively. It is proved that each faithful representation $(\pi, X)$ of $o(P,Q,H)$ can induce a faithful representation $(\widetilde{\pi}, X)$ of $i(P,Q,H)$ such that \begin{align*}&\widetilde{\pi}(P-P\wedge Q)=\pi(P)-\pi(P)\wedge \pi(Q),\\ &\widetilde{\pi}(Q-P\wedge Q)=\pi(Q)-\pi(P)\wedge \pi(Q). \end{align*} When $(P,Q)$ is semi-harmonious, that is, $\overline{\mathcal{R}(P+Q)}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{R}(2I-P-Q)}$ are both orthogonally complemented in $H$, it is shown that $i(P,Q,H)$ and $i(I-Q,I-P,H)$ are unitarily equivalent via a unitary operator in $\mathcal{L}(H)$. A counterexample is constructed, which shows that the same may be not true when $(P,Q)$ fails to be semi-harmonious. Likewise, a counterexample is constructed such that $(P,Q)$ is semi-harmonious, whereas $(P,I-Q)$ is not semi-harmonious. Some additional examples indicating new phenomena of adjointable operators acting on Hilbert $C^*$-modules are also provided.

We then apply the above inequality to find some upper bounds for the $\mathbb{A}$-numerical radius of certain $2\times 2$ operator matrices. In particular, we obtain some refinements of earlier $A$-numerical radius inequalities for semi-Hilbertian operators. Halmos' two projections theorem for Hilbert space operators is one of the fundamental results in operator theory. In this paper, we introduce the term of two harmonious projections in the context of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, extend Halmos' two projections theorem to the case of two harmonious projections. We also give some new characterizations of the closed submodules and their associated projections. As an application, a norm equation associated to a characterization of the Friedrichs angle is proved to be true in the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules., Comment: 26 pages, to appear in Linear Algebra Appl. We review some of the significant generalizations and applications of the celebrated Douglas theorem on the equivalence of factorization, range inclusion, and majorization of operators. We then apply it to find a characterization of the positivity of $2\times 2$ block matrices of operators in Hilbert spaces and finally describe the nature of such block matrices and provide several ways for showing their positivity., Comment: 17 pages. Some new Frobenius norm bounds of the unique solution to certain structured Sylvester equation are derived. Based on the derived norm upper bounds, new multiplicative perturbation bounds are provided both for subunitary polar factors and positive semi-definite polar factors. Let $T$ be an adjointable operator between two Hilbert $C^*$-modules and $T^*$ be the adjoint operator of $T$. The polar decomposition of $T$ is characterized as $T=U(T^*T)^\frac12$ and $\mathcal{R}(U^*)=\overline{\mathcal{R}(T^*)}$, where $U$ is a partial isometry, $\mathcal{R}(U^*)$ and $\overline{\mathcal{R}(T^*)}$ denote the range of $U^*$ and the norm closure of the range of $T^*$, respectively. Inspired by the Douglas lemma, we investigate the solvability of the operator equation $AX=C$ in the framework of Hilbert C*-modules. Utilizing partial isometries, we present its general solution when $A$ is a semi-regular operator. For such an operator $A$, we show that the equation $AX=C$ has a positive solution if and only if the range inclusion ${\mathcal R}(C) \subseteq {\mathcal R}(A)$ holds and $CC^*\le t\, CA^*$ for some $t>0$. In addition, we deal with the solvability of the operator equation $(P+Q)^{1/2}X=P$, where $P$ and $Q$ are projections. We provide a counterexample to show that there exists a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$, a Hilbert $\mathfrak{A}$-module $\mathscr{H}$ and projections $P$ and $Q$ on $\mathscr{H}$ such that the operator equation $(P+Q)^{1/2}X=P$ has no solution. Let $\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$ be the set of all $n \times n$ complex matrices. For any Hermitian positive semi-definite matrices $A$ and $B$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$, their new common upper bound less than $A+B-A:B$ is constructed, where $(A+B)^\dag$ denotes the Moore-Penrose inverse of $A+B$, and $A:B=A(A+B)^\dag B$ is the parallel sum of $A$ and $B$. A factorization formula for $(A+X):(B+Y)-A:B-X:Y$ is derived, where $X,Y\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$ are any Hermitian positive semi-definite perturbations of $A$ and $B$, respectively. Based on the derived factorization formula and the constructed common upper bound of $X$ and $Y$, some new and sharp norm upper bounds of $(A+X):(B+Y)-A:B$ are provided. Let $n$ be any natural number. The $n$-centered operator is introduced for adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. Based on the characterizations of the polar decomposition for the product of two adjointable operators, $n$-centered operators, centered operators as well as binormal operators are clarified, and some results known for the Hilbert space operators are improved. It is proved that for an adjointable operator $T$, if $T$ is Moore-Penrose invertible and is $n$-centered, then its Moore-Penrose inverse is also $n$-centered. A Hilbert space operator $T$ is constructed such that $T$ is $n$-centered, whereas it fails to be $(n+1)$-centered., Comment: The first version has been expanded and re-organized. The parallel sum for adjoinable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules is introduced and studied. Some results known for matrices and bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces are generalized to the case of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. It is shown that there exist a Hilbert $C^*$-module $H$ and two positive operators $A, B\in\mathcal{L}(H)$ such that the operator equation $A^{1/2}=(A+B)^{1/2}X, X\in \cal{L}(H)$ has no solution, where $\mathcal{L}(H)$ denotes the set of all adjointable operators on $H$., Comment: 20 pages. It is proved that for adjointable operators $A$ and $B$ between Hilbert $C^*$-modules, certain majorization conditions are always equivalent without any assumptions on $\overline{\mathcal{R}(A^*)}$, where $A^*$ denotes the adjoint operator of $A$ and $\overline{\mathcal{R}(A^*)}$ is the norm closure of the range of $A^*$. For two positive definite adjointable operators $M$ and $N$, and an adjointable operator $A$ acting on a Hilbert $C^*$-module, some properties of the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse $A^\dag_{MN}$ are established. When $A=(A_{ij})$ is $1\times 2$ or $2\times 2$ partitioned, general representations for $A^\dag_{MN}$ in terms of the individual blocks $A_{ij}$ are studied. In case $A$ is $1\times 2$ partitioned, a unified representation for $A^\dag_{MN}$ is presented. In the $2\times 2$ partitioned case, an approach to constructing Moore-Penrose inverses from the non-weighted case to the weighted case is provided.
