18. 2 K superfluid helium cryogenic vertical test system for superconducting cavity of ADS Injector I

Abstract

Purpose: The accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) is the internationally recognized key technology of nuclear waste problem treatment, of which superconducting proton linac is an important part. With the support of the strategic science and technology pilot project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences took the lead in the research of 325 MHz superconducting proton linac, which is called ADS Injector I. The superconducting accelerator part of ADS Injector I mainly consists of 14 spoke-type superconducting cavities with β0.12. At the same time, the research work of various cavities with different βvalues and different frequencies is also carried out to lay the technical and technological foundation for ADS main accelerator. The only way to determine whether the superconducting cavity can reach the design target and whether it can be installed into the cryostat is the vertical test at cryogenic. As the only way to test the microwave performance of the superconducting cavity at low temperature, the vertical test can accurately test the acceleration gradient Eaccand the corresponding quality factor Q0of the superconducting cavity. The design and construction of the superconducting cavity vertical test facility is based on the practical needs of the pilot project and the long-term development of the superconducting accelerator. Methods: This paper mainly introduces the design and construction of the cryogenic vertical test system for the superconducting cavity of ADS Injector I, including the system scheme design, process design, heat load analysis, 2 K superfluid helium obtaining method, system commissioning and operation, etc. Results and Conclusion: The static heat leakage at 2 K of the 2 K superfluid helium vertical test system of ADS Injector I is 1.624 W, which has reached the international advanced level. The 2 K superfluid helium vertical test system of ADS Injector I after constructed not only meets the test requirements of ADS pilot project, but also conducts 4 K and 2 K vertical tests for other different types of superconducting cavities and relevant cryogenic experiments.

Abstract

Superconducting undulators generally depend on a liquid helium cryostat. If the cryostat can liquefy the boil-off helium completely, a large helium refrigerator can be avoided, and a large amount of electrical energy can be saved. However, many studies are limited by the excessively high heat load. In this work, systematic thermal analysis and optimization are carried out to minimize the total heat load so that it can be covered by the cooling capacity. Based on the analysis, one single thermal shield is set in the cryostat, and thermal interruptions are widely adopted together. Moreover, the cooling capacity matches the heat load well, and the excess cooling capacity is increased significantly. In the experiment, the cryostat was tested with no magnet, a small magnet and a full-scale magnet respectively so that the heat load could be analyzed step by step. Finally, zero liquid helium consumption was achieved with the full-scale superconducting magnet, which reached a current of 450 A. The excess cooling capacity accounts for approximately 40 % of the total cooling capacity, which is as high as approximately 2.0 W. This study can serve as a reference for the research of superconducting undulator and other magnet cryostats. • Zero liquid helium consumption is realized with a 1.5 m superconducting undulator. • Various heat load parts are analyzed, measured and investigated clearly. • Thermal interruptions play an important role in heat insulation of the cryostat. • The mechanical structure is simplified by one single thermal shield. • The cryostat can provide a large temperature margin for the superconducting magnet. Abstract

Platform of Advanced Photon Source Technology R (PAPS) in the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) is an ongoing project, which aimed to provide a comprehensive research and testing platform for the particle accelerator, X-ray detection and optics. As one of the important parts of the platform, cryogenic vertical test stand for the superconducting cavities is composed of three big vertical test cryostats with 2 different inner diameters, which can provide 4.5K liquid helium, 2K superfluid helium and the lowest 1.5K environments according to the cavities test requirements. The cryogen-ic vertical test stands also focus on current international ¿hot spot¿ fast cool down to the superconducting cavi-ties, maximum liquid helium mass flow rate can be reached to 80g/s. Abstract

The Chinese Accelerator Driven Sub-critical system (C-ADS) uses a high energy proton beam to bombard the metal target and generate neutrons to deal with the nuclear waste. The Chinese ADS proton linear has two 0~10 MeV injectors and one 10~1500 MeV superconducting linac. Injector-I is studied by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under construction in the Beijing, China. The linear accelerator consists of two accelerating cryomodules operating at the temperature of 2 Kelvin. This paper describes the structure and thermal performances analysis of the cryomodule. The analysis takes into account all the main contributors (support posts, multilayer insulation, current leads, power couplers, and cavities) to the static and dynamic heat load at various cryogenic temperature levels. The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a long-term collider project, which will serve as a Higgs Factory and offer a unique opportunity for direct searches for New Physics in the high-energy range far beyond LHC reach [1].
