34. Motivation, Intentionality, and Mind Wandering: Implications for Assessments of Task-Unrelated Thought

Abstract

Researchers of mind wandering frequently assume that (a) participants are motivated to do well on the tasks they are given, and (b) task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs) that occur during task performance reflect unintentional, unwanted thoughts that occur despite participants' best intentions to maintain task-focus. Given the relatively boring and tedious nature of most mind-wandering tasks, however, there is the possibility that some participants have little motivation to do well on such tasks, and that this lack of motivation might in turn result in increases specifically in "intentional" TUTs. In the present study, we explored these possibilities, finding that individuals reporting lower motivation to perform well on a sustained-attention task reported more intentional relative to unintentional TUTs compared with individuals reporting higher motivation. Interestingly, our results indicate that the extent to which participants engage in intentional versus unintentional TUTs does not differentially relate to performance: both types of off-task thought were found to be equally associated with performance decrements. Participants with low levels of task-motivation also engaged in more overall TUTs, however, and this increase in TUTs was associated with greater performance decrements. We discuss these findings in the context of the literature on mind wandering, highlighting the importance of assessing the intentionality of TUTs and motivation to perform well on tasks assessing mind wandering.

35. Two-Sided Messages Promote Openness for a Variety of Deeply Entrenched Attitudes.

Abstract

Prior research showed that people holding attitudes on relatively moral topics became more open to two- rather than one-sided messages as the moral basis of their attitudes increased. Across three studies (N = 963), we extend this finding to relatively non-moral topics by demonstrating that two-sided messages can encourage people with strong attitudes indexed by various non-moral attitude strength measures to be more open to contrary positions. Study 1 demonstrated this for four indicators of attitude strength (e.g., certainty). As the strength of one's attitude increased, two-sided messages increased in relative effectiveness over one-sided communication. This was mediated by perceived appreciation for the speaker acknowledging one's view. Study 2 replicated this finding in a preregistered experiment. Study 3 conceptually replicated and extended it to people holding attitudes based on their political identity. Finally, evidence was obtained supporting perceived appreciation (rather than source evaluation) as the key driver of this interactive effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Examining the Impact of a Single Session of Mountain Meditation on Attentional Scope

Abstract

Leading theories propose that mindfulness broadens attentional scope (Dreyfus. Contemporary Buddhism, 12(1), 41-54. 2011; Garland et al. Psychological Inquiry, 26(4), 293-314. 2015). Empirical research has not yielded clear support for a link between mindfulness and adaptive change in attentional scope. In addition, much of this work has focused only on perceptual attention, and attentional scope has been typically assessed after but not before the intervention. In this study, we assessed mood and three components of attentional scope, including perceptual (peripheral vs. central), conceptual (accessibility of mental representations), and thought-action repertoires (accessibility of thoughts and actions one is prepared to pursue) before and after a mountain meditation vs. relaxation vs. control intervention in novice meditators (N= 219). Contrary to hypotheses, participants demonstrated a broadened scope of attention over time regardless of intervention, but we observed that 75% of participants exhibited a broad attentional scope prior to the intervention. Exploratory analyses of participants who exhibited a narrow attentional scope pre-intervention (N= 51) suggested that both mountain meditation and relaxation broadened conceptual attention but that mountain meditation was associated with greater thought-action repertoires than relaxation or control interventions. Methodological issues for mindfulness research are discussed.

45. Persuasive Benefits of Self-Generated Arguments: Moderation and Mechanism

Abstract

We aimed to derive a more systematic understanding of the persuasive advantages of self- versus other-generated arguments. Through three initial data collections (Ntotal= 492) and another two large preregistered studies (Ns= 528 and 496), we found that when people experienced a low level of difficulty (measured or manipulated) generating the arguments, self-generated arguments were more persuasive than other-generated arguments. However, when people experienced a high level of difficulty (measured or manipulated), the typical self-persuasion advantage was reduced significantly. Factor analyses identified perceptions of argument quality as a plausible and replicated mediator of the persuasive advantage of self-generated over other-generated arguments.
