Abstract

The non-cavitating tip vortex in the near field of an elliptical hydrofoil is studied utilizing tomographic particle image velocimetry. Both the instantaneous and time-averaged flow fields are analyzed to elucidate the flow characteristics of the near-field tip vortex. The tip vortex is mainly formed on the suction side of hydrofoil and exhibits a tube-like shape. The turbulence intensity is at a relatively high level around the hydrofoil tip due to the roll-up process of the separated shear layers from the pressure side. With increasing angle of attack, the initiating position of the tip vortex moves upstream along the hydrofoil outline. In the near field, the axial flow within the tip vortex manifests a jet-like profile at higher angles of attack (α ≥ 10 °), and the majority of the vorticity is contained within the vortex core. A special position is identified during the streamwise evolution of the tip vortex, where the vortex circulation reaches its local maximum for the first time and the tip vortex cavitation is more prone to incept. In the vicinity of this crucial position, the pressure–velocity relation is derived along the vortex centerline by combining the three-dimensional measured velocity fields with the governing equations. It is revealed that the mean static pressure is directly related to the local mean axial velocity, adhering to the form of Bernoulli's equation. Conversely, corresponding pressure fluctuation depends on both the mean and fluctuating parts of the local axial velocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: A percutaneous ventricular assist device (pVAD) is an effective method to treat heart failure, but its complications, mainly hemolysis and thrombus formation, cannot be ignored. Accurate evaluation of hemolysis and thrombus formation in pVAD is essential to guide the development of pVAD and reduce the incidence of complications. Methods: This study optimized the numerical model to predict hemolysis and thrombus formation in pVAD. The hemolysis model is based on the power law function, and the multi‐component thrombus prediction model is improved by introducing the von Willebrand factor. Results: The error between the numerical simulation and the hydraulic performance experiment is within 5%. The numerical results of hemolysis are in good agreement with those of in vitro experiments. Meanwhile, the thrombus location predicted by the numerical model is the same as that found in the in vivo experiment. Conclusion: The numerical model suggested in this study may therefore accurately assess the possible hemolytic and thrombotic dangers in pVAD, making it an effective tool to support the development of pVAD. 18. Experimental study on hemodynamics of an end-to-side anastomosis.

Abstract

A three-dimensional and three-component velocity measurement on the flow field in a 45° end-to-side anastomosis model is conducted to investigate the hemodynamics, which is an important factor to the intimal hyperplasia formation and graft failure after surgery. Thanks to the advanced volumetric measurement technology of tomographic particle image velocimetry, the recirculation zone, low-speed region, and the spiral flow structures can be visualized. As a result, the flow field of three cases with the local maximum velocity of 0.15, 0.8, and 1.4 m/s are visible and the inlet velocity profile tends to be skewed as the flow rate increases. The mean vorticity contours indicate that the positive vortex center rotates 6.47°, 50.23°, and 90.4° and the negative vortex center rotates 20.44°, 15.73°, and 68.47°, respectively, in three cases. The instantaneous vortex structures identified by the λ c i criterion demonstrate two large-scale vortex structures in the distal section. The two vortices have the tendency to intertwine while one of them decays earlier. The wall shear stress (WSS) distributions on the entire model with the local maximum of 0.8, 5.8, and 13.8 Pa in three cases have been quantitatively achieved. The abnormal WSS and WSS gradient can help localize risk areas and understand the intimal hyperplasia formation. A detailed illustration of hemodynamics inside the 45° end-to-side anastomosis model has been provided, which demonstrates more comprehensive large-scale flow structures and abnormal WSS regions.
