SnTe-based compounds have long been considered competitive for thermoelectric power generation. However, their intrinsically high hole concentration due to Sn vacancies and inferior band structure featuring a large energy offset in two valence bands at the band edges largely limits their electrical performance. Meanwhile, the relatively high lattice thermal conductivity of SnTe compared to other IV–VI-based thermoelectrics makes their overall thermoelectric performance enhancement challenging. In this study, we prove that spontaneous optimization in both the carrier concentration and band structure of SnTe can be achieved by alloying a small amount of AgBiS2, thereby yielding a high power factor of 2.25 mW m−1 K−2. It is further elucidated through first-principles calculations that AgBiS2 is a proper choice for band structure engineering compared with other dopants and alloying substances. Moreover, plenty of nano-precipitates and grain boundaries were observed in the SnTe matrix, which led to a reduction in lattice thermal conductivity to an amorphous limit of 0.3 W m−1 K−1, finally resulting in a peak zT of 1.6 at 903 K. A new type of hybrid material (NCMTs@MoO2/FeNi3) with a multi-layer heterostructure was designed and fabricated via a one-step pyrolysis process using FeOOH/NiMoO4@PDA as the precursor. FeOOH/NiMoO4@PDA was prepared by the solvothermal method, followed by the nickel-ion etching method coupled with the polymerization of dopamine (DA). The as-obtained material was made of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes embedded with FeNi3 and MoO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Notably, the FeNi3 NPs exhibited significantly improved performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and adsorption of histidine-rich protein as well as provided appropriate magnetism resources. The MoO2 NPs imparted a metallic nature with excellent conductivity, and the N-doped mesoporous carbon microtubes also improved conductivity and facilitated mass transfer, thus leading to enhanced performance in catalysis. Benefiting from the 1D hierarchical porous structure and compositional features, the NCMTs@MoO2/FeNi3 composites exhibited excellent performance in 4-NP reduction and protein adsorption via specific metal affinity between the polyhistidine groups of proteins and the FeNi3 NPs. The result presented here indicates that the strategy of combining tailored components, heterostructuring, and carbon integration is a promising way to obtain high-performance composites for other energy-related applications. Abstract Background Many previous studies lack sufficient quantitative evidences about changes in biomechanical properties of the knee in response to proximal fibular osteotomy (PFO). Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the preoperative and postoperative effects of PFO on mechanical stresses in the knee joint and provide with a biomechanical basis for PFO in the treatment of mild knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with varus deformity. Methods A total of 10 patients suffering mild KOA with varus deformity were enrolled in this study. Their image data from computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were used for finite element models, and PFO models were established. Static structural analysis was carried out using ABAQUS to compare the von Mises stress distribution and values of the maximal von Mises stress of femoral cartilage, meniscuses, tibial cartilages, and tibial plateau before and after surgery. Results The stress distribution in the cortical bone of the tibial plateau showed that stresses were transferred from the anterior medial area to the posterior medial area after PFO. Values of the maximal von Mises stress in femoral cartilage, medial meniscus, medial tibial cartilage, and tibial plateau after surgery were significantly lower than the preoperative values, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Postoperative values of the maximal von Mises stress of lateral meniscus and lateral tibial cartilage were significantly higher than the preoperative ones, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion PFO could reduce the stresses in the medial compartment of the knee joint with stress pathways transferring from the anterior medial area to the posterior medial area of the tibial plateau. Therefore, PFO is recommended for the treatment of mild KOA with varus deformity featuring favorably pain-relieving effects. Graphical abstract

Polyurethane (PU) is a traditional chemical known for its chemical stability and mechanical performance. Inspired by the similarity between the formation and breakage of chemical coordination bonds and the energy storage and release of muscle fibers, muscle‐like electrostatically spun fibers with acid‐responsive energy storage and release were prepared by introducing bio‐inspired elastic energy storage groups and bio‐active degradation groups (PU‐BPY‐Fe) in the main chain of PU, taking advantage of the good mechanical properties of PU. The fabricated electrospinning film PU‐BPY‐Fe can respond to external stimulation, which generated high strain (32 MPa), stretch of 206%, outperforming the nanofiber membrane before stimulation, similar and even higher than the biological muscles. The variable mechanical properties and elastic energy storage capacity of PU‐BPY‐Fe were attributed to the reversible hydrogen bonding and the destabilization of metal coordination bonds (Fe3+ to Fe2+) within the material under acidic stimulation. Cytotoxicity testing of the synthesized fibers indicated a degree of biocompatibility, suggesting potential for in vivo applications. This method of storing and releasing elastic energy was demonstrated and has endowed the PU‐BPY‐Fe with stimuli‐responsibility and muscle‐like mechanical properties, which may inspire the design of soft muscles materials for robots and tissue engineering applications. Tubular structured composites have attracted great interest in catalysis research owing to their void-confinement effects. In this work, we synthesized a pair of hollow N-doped carbon microtubes (NCMTs) with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated inside NCMTs (Fe3O4@NCMTs) and supported outside NCMTs (NCMTs@Fe3O4) while keeping other structural features the same. The impact of structural effects on the catalytic activities was investigated by comparing a pair of hollow-structured nanocomposites. It was found that the Fe3O4@NCMTs possessed a higher peroxidase-like activity when compared with NCMTs@Fe3O4, demonstrating structural superiority of Fe3O4@NCMTs. Based on the excellent peroxidase-like catalytic activity and stability of Fe3O4@NCMTs, an ultra-sensitive colorimetric method was developed for the detection of H2O2 and GSH with detection limits of 0.15 μM and 0.49 μM, respectively, which has potential application value in biological sciences and biotechnology.
