13. Intrinsic skyrmions in monolayer Janus magnets

Abstract

Skyrmions are localized solitonic spin textures with protected topology, which are promising as information carriers in ultra-dense and energy-efficient logic and memory devices. Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed in magnetic thin films, and are stabilized by the extrinsic interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and/or external magnetic fields. The specific effects in magnetic monolayer materials have not been thoroughly studied. Here, we investigate the intrinsic magnetic skyrmions in a family of monolayer Janus van der Waals magnets, MnSTe, MnSeTe, VSeTe, and MnSSe, by the first-principles calculations combined with the micromagnetic simulations. The monolayer Janus MnSTe, MnSeTe, and VSeTe with out-of-plane geometric asymmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have a large intrinsic DMI, which could stabilize a sub-50 nm intrinsic skyrmions in monolayer MnSTe and MnSeTe at zero magnetic field. While monolayer VSeTe with in-plane easy axis forms magnetic domain rather than skyrmions. Moreover, the size and shape of skyrmions can be tuned by an external magnetic field. Abstract

Electrochemical Performance of aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs) is prominently constrained by poor stability of zinc‐metal anodes. However, the use of conventional aqueous separators unfavorable to the uniform deposition of Zn metal and restricted cell cycle life, has hindered the large‐scale application of such battery systems. Here, a separator with hydrophobic/hydrophilic structural domains (marked as PP‐g‐AA) is reported, where the polypropylene (PP) polymer backbone permits partial blockage of water molecules and prevent side reactions, and the carboxyl functional groups in the grafted acrylic acid (AA) facilitate to well regulate the interfacial electric field and Zn2+ ion concentration field, thus remarkably promotes homogenization of zinc ion flux, achieving dendritic‐free deposition of Zn2+. Moreover, the PP‐g‐AA separator sustains a long‐term cycling over 4000 h at a current density of 2 mA cm−2 with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% achieved in Zn||Cu cells, which if assembled into Zn||Zn0.27V2O5·nH2O (ZVO) cells would yield ≈100% retention for 1000 cycles. This research highlights that the strategy opens up a new avenue based on PP‐g‐AA for further decreasing the cost and promoting the industrial application of AZIBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The extensive consumption of chicken has resulted in the emergence of a significant environmental issue in the form of chicken feather waste. As such, there is an urgent need for the development of green treatment and recycling methods for chicken feathers. Chicken feathers can serve as a type of heteroatomic doping carbon source, making them an excellent candidate for the electrode materials used in electrochemical energy devices. Furthermore, their unique structures and functional groups make them highly promising for use as adsorbents, electronics, and building materials. In this paper, we provide a summary and review of recent progress made in the use of chicken feathers for energy and environmental applications. Based on the theoretical knowledge and practical applications presented in this review, promising green recycling processes of chicken feathers can be developed. Abstract

Proton conduction underlies many important electrochemical technologies. A family of new proton electrolytes is reported: acid-in-clay electrolyte (AiCE) prepared by integrating fast proton carriers in a natural phyllosilicate clay network, which can be made into thin-film (tens of micrometers) fluid-impervious membranes. The chosen example systems (sepiolite-phosphoric acid) rank top among the solid proton conductors in terms of proton conductivities (15 mS cm-1 at 25 °C, 0.023 mS cm-1 at -82 °C), electrochemical stability window (3.35 V), and reduced chemical reactivity. A proton battery is assembled using AiCE as the solid electrolyte membrane. Benefitting from the wider electrochemical stability window, reduced corrosivity, and excellent ionic selectivity of AiCE, the two main problems (gassing and cyclability) of proton batteries are successfully solved. This work draws attention to the element cross-over problem in proton batteries and the generic "acid-in-clay" solid electrolyte approach with superfast proton transport, outstanding selectivity, and improved stability for room- to cryogenic-temperature protonic applications.
