Abstract: Abstract We explore the decay of bound neutrons in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector into invisible particles (e.g., $$n\rightarrow 3 \nu $$ n → 3 ν or $$nn \rightarrow 2 \nu $$ n n → 2 ν ), which do not produce an observable signal. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $$ n \rightarrow { inv} $$ n → inv and $$ nn \rightarrow { inv} $$ n n → inv . The invisible decays of s-shell neutrons in $$^{12}\textrm{C}$$ 12 C will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $${\bar{\nu }}_e$$ ν ¯ e , natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $$\tau /B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, \textrm{years}$$ τ / B ( n → inv ) > 5.0 × 10 31 years and $$\tau /B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, \textrm{years}$$ τ / B ( n n → inv ) > 1.4 × 10 32 years .

2. Global cancer statistics for adolescents and young adults: population based study

Abstract: Abstract Background Accurate and up-to-date estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (AYA) are scarce. This study aims to assess the global burden and trends of AYA cancer, with a focus on socioeconomic disparities, to inform global cancer control strategies. Methods AYA cancer, defined as cancer occurring in individuals aged 15–39, was analyzed using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study and the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 project. We examined the global burden by age, sex, geographic location, and Human Development Index (HDI), as well as its temporal trends. Primary outcomes included age-standardized incidence and mortality rates (ASIR, ASMR) and the average annual percent change (AAPC). Results In 2022, an estimated 1,300,196 incidental cases and 377,621 cancer-related deaths occurred among AYAs worldwide, with an ASIR of 40.3 per 100,000 and an ASMR of 11.8 per 100,000. The most common cancers were breast, thyroid, and cervical, while the leading causes of death were breast, cervical, and leukemia. The incidence and mortality were disproportionately higher among females (ASIR: 52.9 for females vs. 28.3 for males; ASMR: 13.1 for females vs. 10.6 for males). Countries with higher HDI experienced a higher incidence of AYA cancers (ASIR: 32.0 [low HDI] vs. 54.8 [very high HDI]), while countries with lower HDI faced a disproportionately higher mortality burden (ASMR: 17.2 [low HDI] vs. 8.4 [very high HDI]) despite their relatively low incidence. Disproportionality and regression measures highlighted significant HDI-related inequalities. AYA cancer incidence was stable from 2000 to 2011 (AAPC: − 0.04) but increased from 2012 to 2021 (AAPC: 0.53), driven by growing gonadal and colorectal cancers. Mortality decreased substantially from 2000 to 2011 (AAPC: − 1.64), but the decline slowed from 2012 (AAPC: − 0.32) probably due to increased deaths from gonadal cancers. These trends varied by sex, cancer type, geography, and HDI. Conclusion AYA cancers present a significant and growing global burden, with marked disparities across sex, geographic locations, and HDI levels. Policymakers should prioritize equitable resource allocation and implement targeted interventions to reduce these inequalities, particularly in low-HDI regions and with regard to gonadal cancers.

3. Prediction of permanent deformation of subgrade soils under F-T cycles using SABO-optimized CNN-BiLSTM network

Abstract: Accurately predicting the permanent deformation of subgrade soils under combined loading and seasonal freeze-thaw (F-T) effects is crucial for optimizing pavement design and maintenance planning in cold regions. However, existing empirical models have limitations in capturing the non-linear deformation behavior influenced by interacting factors. This study developed a deep learning framework, specifically a convolutional neural network-bidirectional long short-term memory (CNN-BiLSTM), for time-series prediction of subgrade strains. Laboratory tests established a comprehensive database to examine soil response across various conditions. Regression analysis revealed the constraints of traditional models. The optimized hybrid architecture directly learned patterns from experimental data, outperforming regression by 29−71 % based on error metrics. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that the model identified primary governing inputs consistent with theory. Hyperparameter tuning with the Subtraction-Average-Based Optimizer further enhanced performance. This data-driven methodology demonstrated the potential of advanced machine learning in simulating complex subsurface deformation behavior under compounding factors in seasonal frozen environments.

Abstract: Abstract Background Tumor-associated inflammation suggests that anti-inflammatory medication could be beneficial in cancer therapy. Loratadine, an antihistamine, has demonstrated improved survival in certain cancers. However, the anticancer mechanisms of loratadine in lung cancer remain unclear. Objective This study investigates the anticancer mechanisms of loratadine in lung cancer. Methods A retrospective cohort of 4,522 lung cancer patients from 2006 to 2018 was analyzed to identify noncancer drug exposures associated with prognosis. Cellular experiments, animal models, and RNA-seq data analysis were employed to validate the findings and explore the antitumor effects of loratadine. Results This retrospective study revealed a positive association between loratadine administration and ameliorated survival outcomes in lung cancer patients, exhibiting dose dependency. Rigorous in vitro and in vivo assays demonstrated that apoptosis induction and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) reduction were stimulated by moderate loratadine concentrations, whereas pyroptosis was triggered by elevated dosages. Intriguingly, loratadine was found to augment PPARγ levels, which acted as a gasdermin D transcription promoter and caspase-8 activation enhancer. Consequently, loratadine might incite a sophisticated interplay between apoptosis and pyroptosis, facilitated by the pivotal role of caspase-8. Conclusion Loratadine use is linked to enhanced survival in lung cancer patients, potentially due to its role in modulating the interplay between apoptosis and pyroptosis via caspase-8.

Abstract: Visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) enhances the navigation of autonomous agents in unfamiliar environments by progressively constructing maps and estimating poses. However, conventional VSLAM pipelines often exhibited degraded performance in dynamic environments featuring mobile objects. Recent research in deep learning led to notable progress in semantic segmentation, which involves assigning semantic labels to image pixels. The integration of semantic segmentation into VSLAM can effectively differentiate between static and dynamic elements in intricate scenes. This paper provided a comprehensive comparative review on leveraging semantic segmentation to improve major components of VSLAM, including visual odometry, loop closure detection, and environmental mapping. Key principles and methods for both traditional VSLAM and deep semantic segmentation were introduced. This paper presented an overview and comparative analysis of the technical implementations of semantic integration across various modules of the VSLAM pipeline. Furthermore, it examined the features and potential use cases associated with the fusion of VSLAM and semantics. It was found that the existing VSLAM model continued to face challenges related to computational complexity. Promising future research directions were identified, including efficient model design, multimodal fusion, online adaptation, dynamic scene reconstruction, and end-to-end joint optimization. This review shed light on the emerging paradigm of semantic VSLAM and how deep learning-enabled semantic reasoning could unlock new capabilities for autonomous intelligent systems to operate reliably in the real world.

7. Do testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin affect cancer risk? A Mendelian randomization and bioinformatics study

Abstract: AbstractUsing Mendelian Randomization (MR) and large-scale Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) data, this study aimed to investigate the potential causative relationship between testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels and the onset of several cancers, including pathway enrichment analyses of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cancer allowed for a comprehensive bioinformatics approach, which offered a deeper biological understanding of these relationships. The results indicated that increased testosterone levels in women were associated with a higher risk of breast and cervical cancers but a lower risk of ovarian cancer. Conversely, increased testosterone was linked to lower stomach cancer risk for men, whereas high SHBG levels were related to decreased risks of breast and prostate cancers. The corresponding genes of the identified SNPs, as revealed by pathway enrichment analysis, were involved in significant metabolic and proliferative pathways. These findings emphasize the need for further research into the biological mechanisms behind these associations, paving the way for potential targeted interventions in preventing and treating these cancers.

Abstract: Abstract Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

9. Nomogram incorporating log odds of positive lymph nodes improves prognostic prediction for ovarian serous carcinoma: a real-world retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Objectives Ovarian serous carcinoma (OSC) is a major cause of gynaecological cancer death, yet there is a lack of reliable prognostic models. To address this, we developed and validated a nomogram based on conventional clinical characteristics and log odds of positive lymph nodes (LODDS) to predict the prognosis of OSC patients.Setting A Real-World Retrospective Cohort Study from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results programme.Participants We obtained data on 4192 patients diagnosed with OSC between 2010 and 2015. Eligibility criteria included specific diagnostic codes, OSC being the primary malignant tumour and age at diagnosis over 18 years. Exclusion criteria were missing information on various factors and unknown cause of death or survival time.Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary outcome were overall survival (OS) and ovarian cancer-specific survival (OCSS).Results For OS and OCSS outcomes, we selected 7 and 5 variables, respectively, to establish the nomogram. In the training and validation cohorts, the C index for OS or OCSS was 0.716 or 0.718 and 0.731 or 0.733, respectively, with a 3-year time-dependent area under the curve (AUC) of 0.745 or 0.751 and a 5-year time-dependent AUC of 0.742 or 0.751. Calibration curves demonstrated excellent consistency between predicted and observed outcomes. The Net Reclassification Index, integrated discrimination improvement and decision curve analysis curves indicated that our nomogram performed better than the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system in predicting OS and OCSS for OSC patients in both the training and validation cohorts.Conclusion Our nomogram, which includes LODDS, offers higher accuracy and reliability than the FIGO staging system and can predict overall and OCSS in OSC patients.

Abstract: Abstract We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, ν 3 decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on τ 3/m 3 in the ν 3 decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet σ x , and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum σ rel.

Abstract: Based on the experimental data, the life characteristics of lithium-ion battery were analyzed. According to the experimental data statistics, the battery life changes with the number of cycles, the performance of the battery after repeated use is studied, and the changes of battery capacity, discharge efficiency, energy efficiency, internal resistance and other parameters with the battery life are explored. The mathematical model of battery life and battery usage times is established by curve fitting, and the SOH of battery is predicted according to this model. Finally, the SOH of Li ion battery is estimated according to the voltage curve fitting method. Firstly, the battery charging curves under different discharge rates and different SOH are normalized, and the charging voltage error after normalization calculation is compared. According to the existing experimental data, the SOH estimation algorithm of 92Ah lithium-ion battery is verified, the estimation accuracy of voltage curve fitting method is verified, and the estimation results of SOH are analyzed.

Abstract: Lung cancer is associated with a heavy cancer-related burden in terms of patients’ physical and mental health worldwide. Two randomized controlled trials, the US-National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) and Nederlands-Leuvens Longkanker Screenings Onderzoek (NELSON), indicated that low-dose CT (LDCT) screening results in a statistically significant decrease in mortality in patients with lung cancer, LDCT has become the standard approach for lung cancer screening. However, many issues in lung cancer screening remain unresolved, such as the screening criteria, high false-positive rate, and radiation exposure. This review first summarizes recent studies on lung cancer screening from the US, Europe, and Asia, and discusses risk-based selection for screening and the related issues. Second, an overview of novel techniques for the differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules, including artificial intelligence and molecular biomarker-based screening, is presented. Third, current explorations of strategies for suspected malignancy are summarized. Overall, this review aims to help clinicians understand recent progress in lung cancer screening and alleviate the burden of lung cancer.

Abstract: The physics potential of detecting ^8 B solar neutrinos will be exploited at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), in a model-independent manner by using three distinct channels of the charged current (CC), neutral current (NC), and elastic scattering (ES) interactions. Due to the largest-ever mass of ^13 C nuclei in the liquid scintillator detectors and the expected low background level, ^8 B solar neutrinos are observable in the CC and NC interactions on ^13 C for the first time. By virtue of optimized event selections and muon veto strategies, backgrounds from the accidental coincidence, muon-induced isotopes, and external backgrounds can be greatly suppressed. Excellent signal-to-background ratios can be achieved in the CC, NC, and ES channels to guarantee the observation of the ^8 B solar neutrinos. From the sensitivity studies performed in this work, we show that JUNO, with 10 yr of data, can reach the 1 σ precision levels of 5%, 8%, and 20% for the ^8 B neutrino flux, ${\sin }^{2}{\theta }_{12}$ , and ${\rm{\Delta }}{m}_{21}^{2}$ , respectively. Probing the details of both solar physics and neutrino physics would be unique and helpful. In addition, when combined with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory measurement, the world's best precision of 3% is expected for the measurement of the ^8 B neutrino flux.

14. Spatial-temporal distribution and environmental parameter characteristics for different types of thunderstorm gales in Hubei Province

Abstract: Based on conventional observation data, NCEP reanalysis data, lightning locating data and radar data, we have conducted the analysis on weather types, spatial-temporal distribution and environment condition of thunderstorm gales in Hubei from 2007 to 2015. Moreover, according to the results in boxplots, we have discussed the environmental parameter characteristics for the different types of thunderstorm gales in different regions and seasons. The main results are as follow. (1) Thunderstorm gales in Hubei, which occur between March and August, can be divided into high-level cold advection forcing (HCAF), low-level warm advection forcing (LWAF), baroclinic frontogenesis (BCF), and quasi-barotropic (QBT) types, with 78% of them occurring in the summer (from June to August). Most of thunderstorm gales occur from 15∶00 BT to 19∶00 BT in a day, whose peak value is at 16:00 BT. The spatial distributions of thunderstorm gales are uneven, whose high frequency regions are located near Yichang of southwestern Hubei and Huangshi of east Hubei. (2) There are seasonal and regional differences in the spatial-temporal distribution of the different types of thunderstorm gales. Among those types, the BCF type occur mostly in spring, and most of HCAF, LWAF and QBT types occur in summer. The HCAF type occurs mostly in the northwest Hubei, and the LWAF type occurs more in Yichang area, Jianghan plain and eastern Hubei, while both the QBT type and the BCF type occur mostly in the eastern Hubei. (3) When the HCAF type thunderstorm gales occur, both the temperature difference (ΔT85) between 850 hPa and 500 hPa and the wind vertical shear (S95) in the mid- and low-level (925-500 hPa) are greater, while the dew-point at 850 hPa is lower. For the QBT type thunderstorm gales, both S95 and K index are greater. For the QBT type, the convective available potential energy (CAPE) is greater, and both S95 and the wind vertical shear (S97) in the low-level (925-700 hPa) is less. For the BCF type, both S95 and S97 are greater. (4) When the thunderstorm gales in Hubei occur, the thresholds of convection parameters of K index, ΔT85 and CAPE are 35 ℃, 25 ℃ and 925 J·kg-1, respec tively. The dispersion of convection parameters is greater in the northwestern Hubei and eastern Hubei, therefore, summing up the thresholds of convection parameters in region has more indicative significance to the forecasting and warning of thunderstorm gales in Hubei.

Abstract: Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract: Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

18. Functional and structural investigation of N-terminal domain of the SpTad2/3 heterodimeric tRNA deaminase

Abstract: Editing is a post-transcriptional process that changes the content of nucleic acids occurring on both DNA and RNA levels. Inosine at position 34 in tRNA is one such example, commonly produced via the deamination of A34, catalyzed by adenosine deaminase acting on tRNA (ADAT or Tad). The formation of inosine is essential for cell viability. The eukaryotic deaminases normally consist of the catalytic subunit Tad2 and the structural subunit Tad3, but the catalytic process is poorly understood. Despite the conservation of the (pseudo-) catalytic domains, the heterodimeric enzyme Tad2/3 also possesses additional domains that could exhibit novel functions. Here we present the structure of the N-terminal domain of the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Tad2/3 heterodimeric tRNA(A34) deaminase (N-SpTad2), which shares ~30% sequence identities with uridine-cytidine or pantothenate kinases, but lacks the predicted kinase functions. While biochemical assays indicated that the domain is not a nucleic-acid binder, it is able to significantly influence the A34-tRNA deamination activity of the holoenzyme. Through co-expression and purification analyses, we deduce that N-SpTad2 plays a role in mediating protein-protein contacts and enhancing the stability and solubility of SpTad2/3, without which the deaminase is not functional. Taken together, our structural and biochemical studies highlighted the importance of the additional domains to the intrinsic deaminase functions of heterodimeric Tad2/3 enzymes and promoted our understanding on this essential post-transcriptional tRNA modification.

Abstract: Abstract Background The adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) editing in anticodons of tRNAs is critical for wobble base-pairing during translation. This modification is produced via deamination on A34 and catalyzed by the adenosine deaminase acting on tRNA (ADAT) enzyme. Eukaryotic ADATs are heterodimers composed of the catalytic subunit ADAT2 and the structural subunit ADAT3, but their molecular assemblies and catalytic mechanisms are largely unclear. Results Here, we report a 2.8-Å crystal structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ADAT2/3 (ScADAT2/3), revealing its heterodimeric assembly and substrate recognition mechanism. While each subunit clearly contains a domain resembling their prokaryotic homolog TadA, suggesting an evolutionary gene duplication event, they also display accessory domains for additional structural or functional purposes. The N-lobe of ScADAT3 exhibits a positively charged region with a potential role in the recognition and binding of tRNA, supported by our biochemical analysis. Interestingly, ScADAT3 employs its C-terminus to block tRNA’s entry into its pseudo-active site and thus inactivates itself for deamination despite the preservation of a zinc-binding site, a mechanism possibly shared only among yeasts. Conclusions Combining the structural with biochemical, bioinformatic, and in vivo functional studies, we propose a stepwise model for the pathway of deamination by ADAT2/3. Our work provides insight into the molecular mechanism of the A-to-I editing by the eukaryotic ADAT heterodimer, especially the role of ADAT3 in catalysis.

20. Surgical treatment of carotid artery stent infection: a case report

Abstract: The most effective treatment for graft infection is still debated, and the success rate of current treatments is low. We herein report the results of surgical treatment and follow-up of a case of infection acquired during carotid stenting with the aim of exploring the most effective treatments for graft infection. We retrospectively analyzed a patient who was admitted in September 2019. This patient underwent debridement, autologous saphenous vein replacement of the common carotid to internal carotid artery, external carotid artery suturing, and continuous negative-pressure wound therapy for carotid stent infection. Ten days after carotid artery revascularization, the growth of granulation tissue in the incision was good, and we decided to suture the neck incision. Five days after removing the stitches, grade A healing was noted. Furthermore, the carotid artery and autologous vein grafts were unobstructed as shown by carotid artery computed tomography angiography reexamination. The patient was monitored for 8 months with no new neurological symptoms and good healing of the incision. Effective treatment of vascular graft infection includes debridement and removal of the infected graft, autologous vein graft revascularization, and negative-pressure wound therapy combined with antibiotic therapy.

Abstract: In the open pit mine production systems, a certain number of trucks transport mine and rock between the power shovel and the unloading point. Due to the mining truck has characteristics of high height, long width and big size, it has a large blind zone and a long braking distance. Therefore, the probability of accidents in mining trucks is high, which results in huge loss of manpower, material resources and financial resources. In this paper, tiny-yolov3 is used to detect obstacles in the mine, its real-time performance is high enough, but the detection accuracy is not ideal. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved target detection model based on tiny-yolov3. The residual network structure based on convolutional neural network is added to the tiny-yolov3 structure, and the accuracy of obstacle detection is improved under the condition of real-time detection. The experimental results show that compared with tiny-yolov3, the detect precision of tiny-yolov3 with residual structure is improved, and the detection speed is reduced slightly, there is no particular impact on the real-time nature of the entire algorithm.

22. Peripheral Sensing: Monitoring Quality of Experience for Video Services Based on Mobile Terminals

Abstract: Quality of experience (QoE), which directly relates to both technical evolvement and profit promotion, is a vital concern for mobile video services. However, the wireless network operators have long been troubled by the problem of lacking effective QoE monitoring approaches since the traditional evaluation methods of communication quality are objective metrics oriented. Considering that mobile terminals are the network elements closest to users, it is promising to realize a real-time QoE estimation for video services by fully utilizing the sensing capabilities of mobile terminals. As the first step, we specifically develop a mobile video testing application. With support from China Unicom, one of the three major wireless network operators in China, over 80 000 data records are collected under the real-world conditions. The collected data consist of four types of subjective scores and 13 objective parameters concerning video attributes, network performance, device capability, playback events, and external factors. After preprocessing the data set through correlation analysis, we establish the two QoE estimation models based on the C4.5 method and the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) method, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed models can achieve remarkable estimation performances and outperform the baseline models. Specifically, the overall estimation accuracy of the GBDT-based model is approximately 80% for a five-level scale and approaches 90% when a more practical 3-level scale is adopted. Finally, we comprehensively discuss the estimation performances based on characteristics of the data and validate the feasibility of estimating QoE based on mobile terminals-the “peripheral sensors” of the mobile networks.

23. VGLL4 Protects against Oxidized-LDL-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction and Inflammation by Activating Hippo-YAP/TEAD1 Signaling Pathway

Abstract: Vestigial-like 4 (VGLL4) has been found to have multiple functions in tumor development; however, its role in cardiovascular disease is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of VGLL4 on the dysfunction and inflammatory response of Ox-LDL-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and its mechanism, so as to provide a new theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis. In the present study, the protective activity of VGLL4 inhibiting Ox-LDL-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammation, and injury as well as its molecular mechanisms was examined using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The results showed that the expression of VGLL4 was decreased with the increase of Ox-LDL concentration in HUVECs. In addition, the functional study found that VGLL4 overexpression alleviated Ox-LDL-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and dysfunction and inhibited apoptosis. Further research found that VGLL4 regulated Hippo-YAP/TEAD1 signaling pathway, and the Hippo-YAP/TEAD1 signaling pathway was involved in the protective mechanism of VGLL4 on HUVECs. In conclusion, it suggests that VGLL4 protects against oxidized-LDL-induced endothelial cell dysfunction by activating the Hippo-YAP/TEAD1 signaling pathway.

Abstract: The main core of wound treatment is cell growth and anti-infection. To accelerate the proliferation of fibroblasts in the wound and prevent wound infections, various strategies have been tried. It remains a challenge to obtain good cell proliferation and antibacterial effects. Here, human hair kerateine (HHK)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers were prepared using cysteine-rich HHK, and then, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were in situ anchored in the sulfur-containing amino acid residues of HHK. After the ultrasonic degradation test, HHK/PEO/PVA nanofibrous mats treated with 0.005-M silver nitrate were selected due to their relatively complete structures. It was observed by TEM-EDS that the sulfur-containing amino acids in HHK were the main anchor points of AgNPs. The results of FTIR, XRD and the thermal analysis suggested that the hydrogen bonds between PEO and PVA were broken by HHK and, further, by AgNPs. AgNPs could act as a catalyst to promote the thermal degradation reaction of PVA, PEO and HHK, which was beneficial for silver recycling and medical waste treatment. The antibacterial properties of AgNP-HHK/PEO/PVA nanofibers were examined by the disk diffusion method, and it was observed that they had potential antibacterial capability against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. In addition, HHK in the nanofibrous mats significantly improved the cell proliferation of NIH3T3 cells. These results illustrated that the AgNP-HHK/PEO/PVA nanofibrous mats exhibited excellent antibacterial activity and the ability to promote the proliferation of fibroblasts, reaching our target applications.

Abstract: The ore fragment size on the conveyor belt of concentrators is not only the main index to verify the crushing process, but also affects the production efficiency, operation cost and even production safety of the mine. In order to get the size of ore fragments on the conveyor belt, the image segmentation method is a convenient and fast choice. However, due to the influence of dust, light and uneven color and texture, the traditional ore image segmentation methods are prone to oversegmentation and undersegmentation. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes an ore image segmentation model called RDU-Net (R: residual connection; DU: DUNet), which combines the residual structure of convolutional neural network with DUNet model, greatly improving the accuracy of image segmentation. RDU-Net can adaptively adjust the receptive field according to the size and shape of different ore fragments, capture the ore edge of different shape and size, and realize the accurate segmentation of ore image. The experimental results show that compared with other U-Net and DUNet, the RDU-Net has significantly improved segmentation accuracy, and has better generalization ability, which can fully meet the requirements of ore fragment size detection in the concentrator.

26. Honey Bee Inhibitory Signaling Is Tuned to Threat Severity and Can Act as a Colony Alarm Signal.

Abstract: Alarm communication is a key adaptation that helps social groups resist predation and rally defenses. In Asia, the world's largest hornet, Vespa mandarinia, and the smaller hornet, Vespa velutina, prey upon foragers and nests of the Asian honey bee, Apis cerana. We attacked foragers and colony nest entrances with these predators and provide the first evidence, in social insects, of an alarm signal that encodes graded danger and attack context. We show that, like Apis mellifera, A. cerana possesses a vibrational "stop signal," which can be triggered by predator attacks upon foragers and inhibits waggle dancing. Large hornet attacks were more dangerous and resulted in higher bee mortality. Per attack at the colony level, large hornets elicited more stop signals than small hornets. Unexpectedly, stop signals elicited by large hornets (SS large hornet) had a significantly higher vibrational fundamental frequency than those elicited by small hornets (SS small hornet) and were more effective at inhibiting waggle dancing. Stop signals resulting from attacks upon the nest entrance (SS nest) were produced by foragers and guards and were significantly longer in pulse duration than stop signals elicited by attacks upon foragers (SS forager). Unlike SS forager, SS nest were targeted at dancing and non-dancing foragers and had the common effect, tuned to hornet threat level, of inhibiting bee departures from the safe interior of the nest. Meanwhile, nest defenders were triggered by the bee alarm pheromone and live hornet presence to heat-ball the hornet. In A. cerana, sophisticated recruitment communication that encodes food location, the waggle dance, is therefore matched with an inhibitory/alarm signal that encodes information about the context of danger and its threat level.

27. Imidacloprid alters foraging and decreases bee avoidance of predators.

Abstract: Concern is growing over the effects of neonicotinoid pesticides, which can impair honey bee cognition. We provide the first demonstration that sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid can harm honey bee decision-making about danger by significantly increasing the probability of a bee visiting a dangerous food source. Apis cerana is a native bee that is an important pollinator of agricultural crops and native plants in Asia. When foraging on nectar containing 40 µg/L (34 ppb) imidacloprid, honey bees (Apis cerana) showed no aversion to a feeder with a hornet predator, and 1.8 fold more bees chose the dangerous feeder as compared to control bees. Control bees exhibited significant predator avoidance. We also give the first evidence that foraging by A. cerana workers can be inhibited by sublethal concentrations of the pesticide, imidacloprid, which is widely used in Asia. Compared to bees collecting uncontaminated nectar, 23% fewer foragers returned to collect the nectar with 40 µg/L imidacloprid. Bees that did return respectively collected 46% and 63% less nectar containing 20 µg/L and 40 µg/L imidacloprid. These results suggest that the effects of neonicotinoids on honey bee decision-making and other advanced cognitive functions should be explored. Moreover, research should extend beyond the classic model, the European honey bee (A. mellifera), to other important bee species.

Abstract: The deluge of sensors and data generating devices has driven a paradigm shift in modern computing from arithmetic-logic centric to data centric processing. At a hardware level, this presents an urgent need to integrate dense, high-performance and low-power memory units with Si logic-processor units. However, data-heavy problems such as search and pattern matching also require paradigm changing innovations at the circuit and architecture level to enable compute in memory (CIM) operations. CIM architectures that combine data storage yet concurrently offer low-delay and small footprint are highly sought after but have not been realized. Here, we present Aluminum Scandium Nitride (AlScN) ferroelectric diode (FeD) memristor devices that allow for storage, search and neural network-based pattern recognition in a transistor-free architecture. Our devices can be directly integrated on top of Si processors in a scalable, back-end-of-line process. We leverage the field-programmability, non-volatility and non-linearity of FeDs to demonstrated circuit blocks that can support search operations in-situ memory with search delay times < 0.1 ns and a cell footprint < 0.12 µm2. In addition, we demonstrate matrix multiplication operations with 4-bit operation of the FeDs. Our results highlight FeDs as promising candidates for fast, efficient, and multifunctional CIM platforms.

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) material research is rapidly evolving to broaden the spectrum of emergent 2D systems. Here, we review recent advances in the theory, synthesis, characterization, device, and quantum physics of 2D materials and their heterostructures. First, we shed insight into modeling of defects and intercalants, focusing on their formation pathways and strategic functionalities. We also review machine learning for synthesis and sensing applications of 2D materials. In addition, we highlight important development in the synthesis, processing, and characterization of various 2D materials (e.g., MXnenes, magnetic compounds, epitaxial layers, low-symmetry crystals, etc.) and discuss oxidation and strain gradient engineering in 2D materials. Next, we discuss the optical and phonon properties of 2D materials controlled by material inhomogeneity and give examples of multidimensional imaging and biosensing equipped with machine learning analysis based on 2D platforms. We then provide updates on mix-dimensional heterostructures using 2D building blocks for next-generation logic/memory devices and the quantum anomalous Hall devices of high-quality magnetic topological insulators, followed by advances in small twist-angle homojunctions and their exciting quantum transport. Finally, we provide the perspectives and future work on several topics mentioned in this review.
