The experiment was to study the effect of different ratios of concentrate to forage on fattening effect of weaned crossbred lambs under the same dietary nutrition level. 30 healthy 90-day-old weaned crossbred lambs with similar body weight were randomly divided into three groups, with 10 replicates in each group and one lamb in each replicate. Lambs were fed with the concentrate to forage ratio of 60 : 40 (test group I), 70 : 30 (test group II) and 80 : 20 (test group III), respectively. The experiment lasted for 60 d. The results showed that the average daily weight gain of lambs in test group III was 30.52% and 14.86% extremely higher than that of test group I and test group E (P<0.01), respectively. The ratio of meat to bone, eye muscle area and slaughter rate of lambs in test group III were higher than those in test group I and test group II, the live weight, carcass weight and net meat weight of lambs in test group III were significantly increased by 10.07%, 22.12% and 21.40% compared with those in test group I (P<0.05), respectively. The average profit was 224.47 yuan per lamb, which was 47.86% and 26.75% significantly higher than that of test group I and test group II, respectively. The experiment indicates that different ratio of concentrate to forage will affect the weight gain and economic benefit of lambs fattening. Increasing the ratio of concentrate to forage can improve fattening effect. The fattening effect of lambs in test group III was better than that in test group I and test group II, and the recommended ratio of concentrate to rougher was 80 : 20. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Epimedii herba is one of the most frequently used herbs in formulas that are prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis in China and its main constituent is Epimedium pubescen flavonoid (EPF). However, it is unclear whether EPF during chronic exposure to cigarette smoke may have a protective influence on the skeleton. The present study investigated the effect of EPF on bone mineral status and bone turnover in a rat model of human relatively high exposure to cigarette smoke. Methods Fifty male Wistar rats were randomized into five groups: controls, passive smoking groups and passive smoking rats administered EPF at three dosage levels (75, 150 or 300 mg/kg/day) in drinking water for 4 months. A rat model of passive smoking was prepared by breeding male rats in a cigarette-smoking box. Bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), bone turnover markers, bone histomorphometric parameters and biomechanical properties were examined. Results Smoke exposure decreased BMC and BMD, increased bone turnover (inhibited bone formation and stimulated its resorption), affected bone histomorphometry (increased trabecular separation and osteoclast surface per bone surface; decreased trabecular bone volume, trabecular thickness, trabecular number, cortical thickness, bone formation rate and osteoblast surface per bone surface), and reduced mechanical properties. EPF supplementation during cigarette smoke exposure prevented smoke-induced changes in bone mineral status and bone turnover. Conclusion The results suggest that EPF can prevent the adverse effects of smoke exposure on bone by stimulating bone formation and inhibiting bone turnover and bone resorption.

Massive rotator cuff tears are a huge challenge for orthopaedic surgeons, as the patients may be in need of multiple operations, even including reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The various repair methods for the rotator cuff, such as partial rotator cuff repair, patch-augmented rotator cuff repair, bridging rotator cuff reconstruction with graft interposition, tendon transfer, and superior capsular reconstruction, have always been the focus of research. During surgical intervention for failed rotator cuff repairs, complexity of tears, poor tissue quality, retained hardware, and adhesions are the problems routinely encountered. Introduction: This study aimed to examine the associations of dietary magnesium (Mg) intake and serum Mg concentration with the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) level in early radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients., Methods: Multivariable logistic regression was used to test the associations of dietary and serum Mg with the serum hsCRP in early radiographic knee OA patients after adjustment of a number of potential confounding factors., Results: A total of 936 early radiographic knee OA patients were included. A significant association between dietary Mg intake and hsCRP was observed. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) for elevated hsCRP (≥3.0 mg/l) in the second, third, fourth, and fifth dietary Mg intake quintile were 0.44 (95% CI: 0.24-0.82), 0.58 (95% CI: 0.31-1.10), 0.34 (95% CI: 0.15-0.77), and 0.19 (95% CI: 0.06-0.57), respectively, compared with the lowest (first) quintile, and p for trend was 0.01. A significant association between serum Mg concentration and hsCRP was observed. The multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI) for elevated hsCRP in the second, third, fourth, and fifth serum Mg concentration quintile were 0.63 (95% CI: 0.35-1.12), 0.83 (95% CI: 0.50-1.39), 0.53 (95% CI: 0.31-0.91), and 0.46 (95% CI: 0.25-0.85), respectively, compared with the lowest quintile, and p for trend was 0.01., Conclusion: The present study indicated that both dietary and serum Mg were inversely associated with serum hsCRP in early radiographic knee OA patients.
